What to do with Tabata?

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jun 18, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Jose Tabata is at .237/.314/.282 for Trenton. He has nine extra-base hits and 27 RBI in 241 at-bats. A .596 OPS?

Tabata is only 19 and it’s no crime to spend another half-season in Single A ball at that age. Clearly the Eastern League is eating him up. It’ll be interesting to see what the Yankees do with him.

Meanwhile, Staten Island opened its season last night and opens at home tonight. Bring out the switch-pitcher. Taylor Grote had two hits for Staten Island last night.

Can’t wait to see the switch pitcher in action!

  2. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 18th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

I disagree Pete, I think it’s more beneficial he stays in AA and works through the struggles, Mike A. already said they are trying to get him to pull the ball in games that’s his main problem right now.

I definitely think Tabata just needs some time. He’s the second youngest player at that level. He went ona hot streak a week and a half ago but cooled off. It’s weird to think how young he is. If he continues to struggle, you send him down. But give him another month.

Switch Pitcher sounds like something Tony LaRussa invented adding an hour to each game.

  5. Joe June 18th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

The man that Peter Gammons called the best set up man in the AL East helped the Phillies get back into the game.

Good call on Hansen Yellow Teeth Gammons

    He continues to impress!

  7. Raya June 18th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

is there any way to see the switch pitcher in action? not necessarily live, I just need to see this!

  8. Doreen June 18th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Is Taylor Grote related to the old NY Mets catcher, Jerry Grote?

  9. Jose June 18th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

    Raya,

Just go to youtube.com and enter in his name. It’ll come up. It’s amazing how easily he can switch

  10. Bob June 18th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Do you watch the games?! Have you seen splits of his last 10 games? Do you not believe that stats are secondary to development in the minors? Stick to the beat you cover, please.

You’re probably right Peter. Might be best to send him back to High A ball. Not only is Tabata not doing well in AA, he’s also got a huge attitude problem which may be a result of his struggle.

Hopefully they send him back to Tampa and rebuilds his confidence and value at the same time. I’d hate to see the Yankees take a bath on him because his value has dropped.

  12. Jerkface June 18th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Tabata needs to stay in AA. Right now they are eating him up inside and he can’t adjust, Single A pitchers won’t be able to offer that kind of competition.

This is where your coaches need to actually do some coaching and work the player through it, supporting him.

I apologize for being off topic about this but I enjoy reading the comments you all write and thought I would share this. Got a chance to meet Joba’s dad at the College World Series yesterday. We were just tailgating in the parking lot and he comes by on his scooter. I said hi and he pointed out he liked my cap, a Yankees one, and came over and we small-talked for a few minutes. Gotta say he is every bit as nice a person as we have all been told he is. I always wonder when I see someone on television if they are the same way when the cameras are not there. Harlan is definitely the real deal. Okay, sorry for the interruption. Back to the topics at hand…

This is the time to trade him. He’s stock like Kennedy are dwindeling.WE got Austin Jackson as our future centerfielder.

  17. Raya June 18th, 2008 at 4:54 pm

Thanks for the video tips! So cool to watch Venditte throw…

zimster- thanks for sharing that story! Its always cool to hear about how player (& their families) act away from the cameras

  18. Phil June 18th, 2008 at 4:55 pm

    Yanks signed Chris Smith.

  19. The other Todd June 18th, 2008 at 5:29 pm

Chris Smith – Sweet sign – He will be a good one

  20. Sal June 18th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Yeah Pete you can’t just look at his season stats. He’s been progressing. Him dominating Tampa is worthless in his development

  21. AlbanyYankee June 18th, 2008 at 6:33 pm

Hey Bob, ease up. Tabata is hitting .216 with 1 extra base hit in his last 10 games. He’s obviously not even treading water at AA. Pete was just raising a point for conversation.

  22. Phil June 18th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Tabata just hit a two run jack.

  23. JeterMack Clutch June 18th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

    do it Jose!!!

  24. Chaz June 18th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

is there somewhere i can watch trenton games or gamecasts or anything?

  25. Phil June 18th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

    you can listen at milb.com

  26. Frank June 18th, 2008 at 8:39 pm

First, this is the worst time to trade either tabata or kennedy as their stock is at an all time low. Why sell low? Second, I don’t care if he hit 4 home runs today, he is a 19 year old who was coming off an injury to his wrist who had previously shown very little power…yet he got prommoted??? He should have started the season in Tampa and moved up accordingly based on progression. Starting him in Trenton was a mistake by the organization b/c if he struggled b/c of the wrist then he would lose value and need to be sent down. If he started in Tampa, a level he had conquered from all points other than power, people would have attributed his lack of success to the wrist rather than not being able to make adjustments to that level. And, he would never be sent down and demoralized in Tampa. Big mistake by BC on this one. What is a 19 year old with a wrist injury doing in AA??? I think someone thought they had Abreu’s replacement and wanted to prove it. Goes back to BC being too in love with his prospects and afraid to make trades…not good.

  27. Jessica June 18th, 2008 at 11:16 pm

Frank.. your completely wrong. Tabata hit .300 at Tampa with a broken wrist. How can you justify keeping him at Tampa again for this year. You need to challenge these players to see what you have in them. There is no point to keep him at single A if it’s not challenging him.

  28. Mike R. June 18th, 2008 at 11:58 pm

The Yankees should hire Pete to call out underperforming players on his blog. Tabata’s line for tonight:

    2-4 HR, BB, 2 RBI, 3 R

Keep up the good work Pete.

  29. ML June 18th, 2008 at 11:59 pm

By the way, I was at Trenton’s game in Harrisburg tonight, and Tabata had a couple of hits including a bomb to right center. It’s not 4 HRs, but it’s a start. I will admit he looked pretty bad last night, but I don’t think the wrist is bothering him anymore.

Pete, add Tabata to your list of guys who play great right after you bash them. Can you try it with Cano next? The minute you write him off is the minute he’ll get red hot.

  30. bigjf June 19th, 2008 at 1:52 am

With Tabby’s mental state right now, sending him down to A ball could finish his career. I say let him stick in AA until he either figures it out, quits, or is traded. And tell him he’s sticking around there until he figures it out.
