Bleich up again for Stanford in CWS

Future Yankee Jeremy Bleich will be on the mound for Stanford tomorrow in the College World Series.

The left-hander is scheduled to start for Stanford against Georgia on ESPN2 at 2 p.m. (EDT). It’s an elimination game for Stanford. Bleich has a plus curveball and a better fastball than initial scouting reports on him indicated. The Yankees took him with the 44th overall pick.

So set your Tivo and in a year or two you can impress your friends by saying you saw him pitch in college.

No big deal you say? Joba Chamberlain was the 41st overall pick in 2006. Be a good fan, follow the kids.

UPDATE: Bad weather in Omaha has pushed everything back in the CWS. The Stanford-Georgia game will now he on Saturday. I would imagine Bleich will still pitch. Check ESPN.com for the television schedule.

Hey Peter – Any idea on when the Futures Game rosters will be announced?

My guess is that Austin Jackson will be included in the US Roster. Do we believe any other New York Yankees will be included in the game?

    Hope he pitches well.

I really enjoyed watching Bleich pitch like two weeks ago, I look forward to tomorrow.

    Good Luck Bleich!

    /off-topic from the MiLB website:

It was announced on Thursday that two-time All-Star and four-time World Series winner Tino Martinez will manage the World Team in the XM All-Star Futures Game on Sunday, July 13, at Yankee Stadium in New York.

“I’m thrilled to death,” Martinez said. “It’s quite an honor to be able to manage that team. To have the opportunity to do it in Yankee Stadium, it doesn’t get any better than that.”

“• Memo to Hank Steinbrenner: You know how many American League pitchers besides Chien-Ming Wang have landed on the disabled list because they suffered an interleague-play injury while running the bases in the past five seasons? How about none, according to Baseball Prospectus’ Will Carroll. So it’s time for Hank to head for the dictionary and study the definition of “freak injury,” because that’s what this was.”

Actually, Colon’s on the DL now, too…

  6. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Bronson Arroyo will save us!! June 19th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

    Good luck to Bleich tomorrow

If anyone interested Alan Horne starting tonight for Scranton. His line so far 3ip 0 hits 0 runs 0 walks and 2k’s. Also Chad Jennings posted lots of infro regarding Ponson Cox Scranton bringing back Chris Basak. Check it out if you got time.

Go Stanford! It was a fun game yesterday… hopefully we can exact some revenge on Georgia this time.

“Actually, Colon’s on the DL now, too”

I’ll never get the image out of my head of him swinging so hard that his helmet flew off and he nearly fell over.

I remember the announcer saying it was the worst at-bat by a pitcher ever. Can’t say I disagree – but it’s further proof of how alien it is for a lot of pitchers to do anything other than throw off of a mound.

Rebecca- Colon injured himself while swinging a bat, not running the bases.

And the Staten Island Yankees are up 7-2 in the top of the ninth over the Brooklyn Cyclones. It’s on SNY

Bleich is a top ten talent who was hurt much of the year which is th eonly reason the Yanks could get him. He’s not as big a risk as Brackman but could bring every bit as much of a “reward”. Easily the best LHP the Bombers have drafted since Brien Taylor… it’s about time.

  13. Bob June 19th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Brien Taylor, You really mean Andy Pettitte

Great post, Peter. Shows why you’re the best in the business.

    Go Cardinal!

  16. Jeter2007 June 19th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

    i don’t think he’s a top 10 talent. he’s ok, not that good and i don’t see that high of a ceiling

i saw him on tv against fullerton… he looks like pettitte right now, not when pettitte was younger

he throws 87-89 according to the gun…a decent curve… he has good composure, good mound presence

that’s about it. he’ll have to hit his spots and change speeds to be successful

maybe he was throwing harder last year or the beginning of this year before he got hurt, but that’s where he sits right now… there’s still hope… during the fullerton game, there was some worry about his pitch count so it seems his strength is still building. i hope so.

if he could add a couple mph, then i think he would be good, but at that speed, you have to be near perfect everywhere else

then again, being “just an average” mlb starter is pretty damn good

You’ll have to change that to Saturday, as the Stanford game got pushed back a day.

awesome, i can watch it now!

Thanks Pete for this particular update. Working thru Recession precluded CWS viewing on a Fri & w/out the heads-up, the Sat reschedule would’ve been missed entirely. The Blog is the best thing to happen to NYY fans since radio.

    3.1 innings, 6 ER.

He didn’t look impressive at all. Fastball was 88-90, curve didn’t curve, change was flat.

    Yuk.
