Game 73: Padres at Yankees

YANKEES (39-33)
Damon LF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Posada DH
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF
Molina C
Chamberlain RHP

Josh Banks (2-0, 1.29) vs. the New York hitters.

Joba Chamberlain (1-2, 2.48) has never faced any of the San Diego hitters.

Notes: Thanks to Brian Heyman for calling in the lineup. … Hideki Matsui’s “just a day” knee injury is now two days. But based on what he said last night, he should be OK and is likely available to pinch hit. … This Start No. 4 for Joba Chamberlain in The Process. He can go to 105 pitches or so. He has yet to win any of his starts but pitched very well against the Astros in his last outing, allowing one run in six innings.

Back later with updates. Enjoy the game.

I hope Matsui isn’t hurt a lot worse than was reported.

  2. saucY June 19th, 2008 at 10:06 am

    day game :(

we are home tomorrow, i don’t get it. you think the Padres would have a day game on account of Yankees travel if in SD? i think not.

  3. Fran June 19th, 2008 at 10:07 am

With the quick turnaround they probably decided to give Matsui one more day.

The Yanks going for 7 in a row and the sweep. Let’s go Yankees!

  4. Spitzer June 19th, 2008 at 10:08 am

Yankee stadium never seems to have a problem filling up, even in day games.

  5. TKinDC June 19th, 2008 at 10:08 am

    Pete -

The difference between what Cashman said and what Girardi said really seems to tick you off, no? Doesn’t seem like the substance was all that significant between 1 day off and the couple days it actually will be.

Maybe there is more to it than you have conveyed – but I think we all want Girardi to be straight up with us as fans and you guys as beat writers.

  6. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 10:12 am

If something happens w/ Matsui, Brian Giles is the perfect fill in.

  7. tim June 19th, 2008 at 10:14 am

on my way to the stadium now. Train is packed with Yankee shirts and hats. Should be a nice crowd

  8. Patrick (the good one) June 19th, 2008 at 10:14 am

Someone brought up Jerry Manuel’s comments in the previous post but I think the snippet from rotoworld is hilarious:

Explaining what happened when Jose Reyes put up a fight when asked to leave Tuesday’s game with a hamstring injury, manager Jerry Manuel joked: “I told him next time he does that I’m going to get my blade out and cut him. I’m a gangster. You go gangster on me, I’m going to have to get you. You do that again, I’m going to cut you right on the field.”

Manuel has been on the job for less than a week, but that has to be the leader in the clubhouse for managerial Quote of the Year. He was known as a relatively laid back manager while with the White Sox, but has apparently been sharpening his blades and taking gangster lessons since then. Reyes returned to the lineup Wednesday and went 3-for-5 with a steal, three runs and zero incidents of going gangster.

  9. Patrick (the good one) June 19th, 2008 at 10:15 am

I think the Yanks need a coach that can go gangster on Robbie Cano once in awhile.

  10. tim June 19th, 2008 at 10:16 am

actually Brett Gardner is the best option if matsui goes down. Abreu plays dh Gardner in rf

  11. raymagnetic ®™ June 19th, 2008 at 10:17 am

“Hideki Matsui’s “just a day” knee injury is now two days”

Could it be that they gave him an extra day as a precaution. If he pinch hits tonight then it really will have been just a day that he missed.

  12. TurnTwo June 19th, 2008 at 10:21 am

“Abreu plays dh Gardner in rf”

Gardner doesnt have the arm for RF. youd prob have Melky shift from CF to RF, and Gardner slot into CF… but thats only if they DH Abreu.

  13. whozat June 19th, 2008 at 10:23 am

“actually Brett Gardner is the best option if matsui goes down. Abreu plays dh Gardner in rf”

Boo. Gardner does not have the arm for RF, and his bat is unlikely to be much better than Melky’s. Giles gets on base a TON, and that’s not inflated by petco. Though, as Matsui’s mostly a DH, one thinks we could find someone DHier (and thus cheaper) as a replacement.

  14. Dee June 19th, 2008 at 10:24 am

I don’t see any problem with sitting Hideki.

Jorge has caught 2 nights in a row, the game last night ended at midnight and we now have a 1pm game. So DHing Jorge and giving Matsui an extra day of rest sounds like two birds in one stone to me. Johnny and Giambi are both super hot now so it makes sense to play those two and sit Matsui and his sore knee.

  15. tim June 19th, 2008 at 10:25 am

I only said Gardner in rf and melky in cf because I thought people would bash me. I would rather Gardner in cf

  16. TKinDC June 19th, 2008 at 10:28 am

    tim –

It is a surly and tough crowd – even in the middle of a nice win streak. :)

Enjoy the game – Go Yanks!

  17. TurnTwo June 19th, 2008 at 10:29 am

    from Olney today:

“The Padres were shut down by Andy Pettitte the other night. “That was the best he’s ever looked to us,” said San Diego GM Kevin Towers. “Better than he was in the ’98 World Series. Incredible. You could see it when he was warming up, in his tempo and the way the ball was moving and how he was spotting everything. He was dominant.”

Towers chuckled at the suggestion that the Chien-Ming Wang injury is enough to take down the Yankees. “Their offense is rolling now,” he said. “Their offense is one of the two best we’ve seen.”

  18. TurnTwo June 19th, 2008 at 10:29 am

and, Pete gets the shoutout on Olney’s blog today, too… congrats.

  19. Joe from Long Island June 19th, 2008 at 10:30 am

The discussion above about Brett in RF or not started me thinking. Why is throwing ability in RF more important than in CF?

  20. Fat Free June 19th, 2008 at 10:31 am

    Barry Bonds…come on down!!

if we can add Ponson, why not sign Bonds to fill in for ‘Zilla?

  21. saucY June 19th, 2008 at 10:32 am

i was thinking Gardner play left and DH Damon. but i guess that’s just me…

  22. tim June 19th, 2008 at 10:34 am

Wang is a huge hit but why would it eliminate us? We have THE deepest lineup in the bigs with a pretty good rotation not great but not bad

  23. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 10:34 am

Whozat this is a big reason to like Brian Giles :D

    .301/.404/.446 overall season

    .305/.396/.480 vs RHP
    .293/.420/.380 vs LHP

between May and June leading off an inning .395 OBP %

    RISP .263/.421/.456
    .386/.449/.545 (w/ a runner on 1B)

Who wouldn’t love that and he gives defense and is a gamer.

  24. saucY June 19th, 2008 at 10:34 am

“The discussion above about Brett in RF or not started me thinking. Why is throwing ability in RF more important than in CF?”

how often does an outfielder, any outfielder, throw to first base? how often do they throw to third?

  25. Fat Free June 19th, 2008 at 10:35 am

Gee Tim, kinda early to be heading out to the stadium.

    where are you, sheepshead bay?

  26. TurnTwo June 19th, 2008 at 10:37 am

saucY, you can definately do that, too.

  27. Anyone but Farnsworth June 19th, 2008 at 10:37 am

A-rod is a machine over under 3 hits today..Going to the game and I am going after Kyle”the hick” Farnsworth. I am going to verbally abuse and probably swing at him a couple of times..

  28. Eric June 19th, 2008 at 10:40 am

Last night David Cone was talking about how in 1998, they would have Homer Bush come in and pinch run late in the game and he was a great weapon because of his speed. You have to think that Gardener could do the same thing this year, and most likely will get called up in September (or briefly prior to that, if they want him on the playoff roster).

  29. tim June 19th, 2008 at 10:40 am

Giles would also cost a few prospects and because were so deep anyone we lose Is a big loss especially for giles

  30. Fredo Corleone June 19th, 2008 at 10:41 am

“The discussion above about Brett in RF or not started me thinking. Why is throwing ability in RF more important than in CF?”

Helps to have big arm in RF to keep guys from going 1st to 3rd on you all day. Having an arm in center is nice, but secondary to having a guy who can cover the ground.

  31. DLev June 19th, 2008 at 10:42 am

The Yankees lose their top pitcher for most of the year and they won’t trade for a replacement. I really doubt that they’re going to be trading for an old expensive DH, no matter how good he is, to replace a guy a few days.

  32. TKinDC June 19th, 2008 at 10:42 am

    Anyone but Farnsworth -

Don’t worry – I think SJ44 is a lawyer and would gladly defend you pro bono – lol

No jury made up of Yankee fans would convict you.

  33. tim June 19th, 2008 at 10:43 am

the game is at one I’m on the train until around 1115 and the subway takes a halghour so I’ll be there an hour early.

The problem with Gardner as a pinch runner is cashman said he wants Gardner playing everyday

  34. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 10:45 am

how often does an outfielder, any outfielder, throw to first base? how often do they throw to third?

Well Brett has gunned down runners at home plate in AAA more often than not. I just think w/ Matsui the warning signs are there, knee pain and on both of them you need to be prepared if something comes up trade deadline w/ Matsui then Brian Giles wouldn’t be a bad replacement. Giles gives just as good on offense if not better on defense than Matsui or any current OF on this roster. The combo of Melky, Giles and Gardner to close out a game in the OF would be a beautiful sight.. No ?

  35. RhapsodyInBlue June 19th, 2008 at 10:48 am

I seem recall the last time Giles contract came up he publicly stated he didn’t want to play for the Yankees.

  36. RhapsodyInBlue June 19th, 2008 at 10:49 am

Giles is a very good player, that I agree, but doubt he would come to the Yankees.

  37. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 10:49 am

Giles would also cost a few prospects and because were so deep anyone we lose Is a big loss especially for giles

Whoa whoa whoa the market for Brian Giles isn’t that expensive, a relief pitcher and a guy like Juan Miranda can net him. Giles isn’t seen in the market that strongly which is why it would be an under the radar type of thing. Awhile ago I saw the Red Sox wanted him then I asked myself why ? his numbers surprised the crap out of me, in OBP % he is 12th overall in the whole MLB.

  38. tim June 19th, 2008 at 10:50 am

giles Gardner and Damon would be a beautiful sight in the OF

  39. Cano is worth keeping June 19th, 2008 at 10:51 am

random- has anyone heard anything about bringing us Christian as maybe a pinch runner/ utility guy as opposed to betemit? he’s been hot lately (15-35) and would provide a much faster pinch runner and as a viable option to sit Cano in his recent slump (I realize he has hit in the last three games but only one or two to me showed a turnaround from what I have been seeing)

and I don’t mind ramirez BUT WHY DO WE STILL EVEN PITCH FARNSWORTH, I WOULD ALMOST RATHER SEE IGAWA (okay maybe he’s not that bad)

  40. SJ44 June 19th, 2008 at 10:52 am

That’s why Matsui is DH’ing for the most part this year. To save his knees.

While some folks go crazy each day when the lineup is posted in here, you now see the method to Girardi’s “madness”. He has to keep Giambi, Matsui and Damon healthy. To do so, he has to rotate off days for them or they will break down as the season goes on.

This team doesn’t need another hitter. They need 3 things: Pitching, pitching and pitching.

They aren’t going to the playoffs with Ponson, Giese, and Rasner fighting it out for the 4th and 5th slots in the rotation.

They are band aids until a viable trade market forms. Any win (like last night) the Yankees get from those guys, you take it and be very happy. Regardless of how the game played out.

If Cash is going to make moves (and he will, IMO) it will be to upgrade the pitching staff, not the offense.

If Matsui goes down, Posada will DH more and Molina and Moeller will catch.

  41. TKinDC June 19th, 2008 at 10:52 am

    Guys –

Matsui just had his knee drained – relax with the replacement talk -

it isn’t like he has to go play a round of US Open golf or something dangerous like that. :)

  42. tim June 19th, 2008 at 10:55 am

Do we want to lose a guy like Miranda and someone like cox for a giles rental?

  43. Fredo Corleone June 19th, 2008 at 10:55 am

    Eric:

All Homer Bush could do is run. He offered no other skills. Gardner is in a mini funk right now, but he stands to be a more complete offensive player than Bush ever dreamed of being. Doesn’t serve him well to watch games from the bench in hopes of a pinch running opportunity to come up. They have guy’s in the minors with skill sets closer to Homer’s (read: speed and nothing else) they can bring up for that purpose. I wouldn’t bring up Gardner, unless I can play him.

  44. Fat Free June 19th, 2008 at 10:56 am

    wrong SK

    Offensive. Offensive. Offensive.

Look, we’ve had no post season offensive since 2004.

You can’t have too many bats.

  45. Cano is worth keeping June 19th, 2008 at 10:56 am

TKinDC- hahahahahahahahahahaha im sorry pointless post but that was hilarious

  46. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 10:56 am

SJ don’t forget actual range in the OF defense too. Pitching is priority #1 but one must not forget defense in covering those OF gaps and limiting the baserunners effectiveness.

  47. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 10:59 am

Tim right now is not the time to do this, this is just a break glass in case of emergency type of thing. I don’t know why but Matsui and knees getting drained and everything is alright doesn’t make me say ..Ohhhhh don’t worry. :?

  48. bphill June 19th, 2008 at 11:00 am

joba time….lets get this win today.

  49. tim June 19th, 2008 at 11:00 am

just passing the stadium. Does anyone know if they are bringing the big bat over or creating a new one?

  50. SJ44 June 19th, 2008 at 11:02 am

    Brandon,

Giles is not that good of an OF. He’s also in his late 30′s, lefthanded, and makes over 10 million this year.

Not seeing him as anybody the Yankees would be interested in taking unless he’s a “throw in” for a Peavy deal. lol

Just kidding on the Peavy part!

If they need an OF, think smaller and not bigger. They won’t add a lot of payroll for a 4th OF.

  51. raymagnetic ®™ June 19th, 2008 at 11:03 am

“Whoa whoa whoa the market for Brian Giles isn’t that expensive, a relief pitcher and a guy like Juan Miranda can net him.”

That would probably get you Marcus Giles. That’ll get you hung up on for Brian Giles.

You post how good Giles’ numbers are and then you propose the Yankees trade garbage to get him.

  52. TurnTwo June 19th, 2008 at 11:03 am

“Does anyone know if they are bringing the big bat over or creating a new one?”

i actually havent heard anything about the future status of the big bat… makes me think there wont be one at all at the new stadium.

  53. Oliver from singa[pre June 19th, 2008 at 11:03 am

They are showing the Game today in Singapore!! I cant wait to watch it! Finally get to see Joba pitch. Hopefully he gets his first win and yankees continue the run!! Hmmm why poasada and not molina as catcher? Betermint look good last night!

  54. Patrick (the good one) June 19th, 2008 at 11:04 am

“Who wouldn’t love that and he gives defense and is a gamer.”

I agree Giles is a great player but calling a ballplayer a “gamer” is now officially on my list of buzz words that I hate. It doesn’t MEAN anything. Others include:
    scrappy
    clutch
    gritty
    sneaky fast

  55. Don Vito A. Bellamo June 19th, 2008 at 11:06 am

21-8… Yankees Record in June 2008

  56. jennifer June 19th, 2008 at 11:07 am

So are we going to take bets on Mike explaining away Bronson’s great preformance last night? And why we should still trade for him?

  57. Motown Yankees Fan June 19th, 2008 at 11:07 am

Patrick – I would like to add “gets his uniform dirty” to that list. That only matters in little league.

  58. TurnTwo June 19th, 2008 at 11:07 am

hey, Patrick, what about Michael Kay’s annoying one of the night last night:

    max effort!

  59. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 11:07 am

He has 1 more year after this SJ

    06-08: $9M annually, 09: $9M option ($3M buyout)

It’s more bat replacement plus the defense incase of emergency. Throwing ideas out there.

  60. raymagnetic ®™ June 19th, 2008 at 11:10 am

“Patrick – I would like to add “gets his uniform dirty” to that list. That only matters in little league.”

Actually PUD(Percentage of Uniform Dirty) is a very viable stat.

  61. BBP June 19th, 2008 at 11:11 am

I wish Chad Moeller could be on the rotation in Game3, 2003~2007 Banks vs Moeller 5AB 0.800 3HR 5RBI, better than Molina.

  62. Fran June 19th, 2008 at 11:11 am

TV note for those interested in the Staten Island Yankees – the game tonight versus the Brooklyn Cyclones is on SNY at 7PM.

  63. Russell NY June 19th, 2008 at 11:14 am

“So are we going to take bets on Mike explaining away Bronson’s great preformance last night? And why we should still trade for him?”

Despite how annoying it is to hear his name over and over, I think Arroyo would be a good addition to this team as well.

  64. Don Vito A. Bellamo June 19th, 2008 at 11:16 am

The Yankees still have a shot at finishing June 21-8 !!!

  65. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 11:17 am

You post how good Giles’ numbers are and then you propose the Yankees trade garbage to get him.

First off I’m not saying do it I’m saying this is an “incase” and secondly it’s simple because he is not on high demand, the demand dictates market. If there is only one team looking to deal and Kevin Towers feels that all there is w/ the Pads having a buy out team option for him they would look to deal for what they can get. Again not saying to do it. Not rushing into anything this is an incase of type thing.

  66. Patrick (the good one) June 19th, 2008 at 11:17 am

“Actually PUD(Percentage of Uniform Dirty) is a very viable stat.”

Yes but its only useful when calculating SORP (Scrappiness Over Replacement Player).

  67. jennifer June 19th, 2008 at 11:17 am

    Oliver

#1 day after night, (the game ended at midnight)
#2 He is coming back from an injury.

  68. Patrick (the good one) June 19th, 2008 at 11:18 am

Brandon how do you know what the demand on Brian Giles is? Just because you didn’t realize until recently that he’s a good player doesn’t mean GM’s don’t know he’s good.

  69. mike June 19th, 2008 at 11:21 am

Giles has not been the same since drug testing came into the league………….and do you think his OBP results from being one of only two people on the whole team who can actually hit a ball out of the infield?

  70. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 11:21 am

As for Arroyo last night he showed how he still is the same SP that ended up taking butt whoopings in the AL and ended up w/ a 4.92 1st half and 4.05 2nd half ERA.

  71. Yankee Trader June 19th, 2008 at 11:21 am

I thought we had a rightfielder in Abreu, but if the Padres want to unload Giles, get him and trade Abreu, in his walk year for a good pitcher.

Here’s a trade Abreu, Farnsworth, both in their walk years, plus 2 minor leaguers for Matt Holiday and Brian Fuentes, both whom the Rockies will have trouble resigning!!

  72. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 11:22 am

I gotta go eat and whatnot, but back by gametime.

  74. raymagnetic ®™ June 19th, 2008 at 11:24 am

    Patrick,

SORP is definitely another good one. David Eckstein usually leads the league in SORP and PUD.

  75. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 11:24 am

and do you think his OBP results from being one of only two people on the whole team who can actually hit a ball out of the infield?

I’m sorry but are you trying to say San Diego’s offense better than ours ?

  76. americanbear June 19th, 2008 at 11:25 am

It’s encouraging how far the system has come in the last 3 years. We have approx 10 pitchers on the DL, including 3/5 of the opening day rotation and some key relievers as well. Most teams have a couple pitchers on the DL, how many teams can be competitive when faced with so many injuries to the staff? It was just a few years ago we were pulling the likes of Al Leiter and Scott Erikson off the scrap pile to fill spots.

We are in the midst of a winning streak and Wang’s spot hasn’t come up yet, but still, our organization pitching depth (not necessarily high quality) is as deep as it gets.

  77. Stormrider6 June 19th, 2008 at 11:28 am

Anyone care to calculate Melky’s VORC (Value Over Replacement Cabrera)? Seems like there are nearly Cabrera’s as Rodriguez’s lately…

  78. myrtlebeachfan June 19th, 2008 at 11:29 am

I despise Bronson Arroyo. He hits batters like crazy, and you know theyre almost all intentional. I will never root for the guy ever since his Red Sox days.

Why not throw Freddy Garcia into the mix for the rotation. He’s a free agent and won’t take too long to get into shape. He’s been there before and has had some pretty impressive success in the past, like with the Mariners. He’s no Pedro or Johan, but he’s at least competent enough to make the rotation competition more interesting than Giese will.

I know that Derek Lowe is not someone that some of you think highly of, but he’s a FA next year and could be a very valuable pitcher. He gives you innings and will keep you in ballgames. He’s starting to look like the best option to me. Plus, I’d love for Red Sox fans to have to see him in a Yankees uniform.

Obviously a guy like Burnett is the best option as far as potential FA go, but the Blue Jays wouldn’t trade him in the east without asking for a TON of talent.

  79. Motown Yankees Fan June 19th, 2008 at 11:29 am

Isn’t Melky the prototypical replacement Cabrera?

  80. Stormrider6 June 19th, 2008 at 11:30 am

“nearly as many” – All the cool kids are leaving out words when they speak nowadays.

  81. RSM June 19th, 2008 at 11:31 am

I have to agree with SJ. Giles is good, but doesn’t make sense. We already have a log jam of aging left handed hitters. If Matsui misses time, which I don’t think he will, they could call up Gardner (and DH Damon since he’s the weakest outfielder). I do believe Cashman will try to make a trade , but it will be for a pitcher, and it won’t be until much closer to the deadline.

    Looking forward to Joba :)

  82. TurnTwo June 19th, 2008 at 11:33 am

“a guy like Burnett is the best option as far as potential FA go”

in case people havent been paying attention, Ben Sheets has had a quiet, but very productive year in Milwaukee so far.

he has an injury history, sure, and with Zambrano’s potential shoulder injury, the Brewers arent likely to move Sheets if they think they are still in it, but Sheets would be a valuable addition the way he’s pitched this season.

  83. saucY June 19th, 2008 at 11:34 am

i think there’s more Gonzolaz’s than Cabreras or Rodriguez’s this year. i’d have to check though.

On a funny subject, anyone looking for laughs that hasn’t been over to It Is High this morning should read this ‘timeline’ on Sidney Ponson’s career. Funny, funny stuff.

Normally don’t like to link other blogs here, but this is an hysterical, quick read.

  86. Russell NY June 19th, 2008 at 11:38 am

“Why not throw Freddy Garcia into the mix for the rotation.”

Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe Cashman ruled Garcia out because a) he wouldn’t be available for another month+ and b) we don’t need another pitcher with injury concerns.

  87. myrtlebeachfan June 19th, 2008 at 11:39 am

I agree that Sheets is an even better pitcher with more talent than Burnett, but that’s an awfully high price for a rental with major injury concerns.

Even if he sign him, he could turn out to be Carl Pavano II.

Again, I’m looking at Derek Lowe, especially for the innings he could give. THe Dodgers will need to fall out of contention and go on a losing streak for them to consider trading him. Let’s give the Igawa’s, Giese, and Ponson’s a chance while we scope out the league for tailspinning teams with OK arms.

  88. EricVA June 19th, 2008 at 11:39 am

Two things about all this talk:

If Gardner was ML ready, he’d be in the major leagues. He’s not and he isn’t. Just because he’s fast doesn’t make him great. Damon is fast, and he hits WAY better than Gardner ever will.

About trades, I read a great comment a few days ago. If the trade doesn’t hurt on both sides, it isn’t a good trade. Stop acting like other teams want our bad players for their good players, no matter what the contracts say.

  89. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Bronson Arroyo will save us!! June 19th, 2008 at 11:40 am

I’m a little late to the discussion but:

“Explaining what happened when Jose Reyes put up a fight when asked to leave Tuesday’s game with a hamstring injury, manager Jerry Manuel joked: “I told him next time he does that I’m going to get my blade out and cut him. I’m a gangster. You go gangster on me, I’m going to have to get you. You do that again, I’m going to cut you right on the field.””

What? Oh my lord. LOL. Can you imagine if Girardi said that? It would be code red in Yankees land…lol

Well, I hope Joba does well today! Ugh day game.
Today it will be gameday and listening to crazy and crazier watching the game. I have my shot glass ready in case the Bronson Arroyo drinking game starts up again today. ;)

  99. rconn23 June 19th, 2008 at 11:45 am

Matsui’s knee problems are just another reason why it makes more sense to sign Tex in the offseason that it does C.C.

The position players are getting older. There is a bounty of young pitching in the minors that should come up to the bigs in the next few years -Brackman, Betances, McAllister, Heredia, Cole, Bleich – to add one (hopefully) to Joba, Hughes and Kennedy.

Position players – not so much. Other than Montero and A-Jax, there really aren’t any high-ceiling prospects in the farm system. The offense has to come from somewhere.

Tex gives you a very good bat and terrific glove at first base, and he will be in his prime. It also makes sense for the Yankees to try to trade for a young outfielder.

As for Giles, he’s a player I really wanted the Yankees to go after a few years ago. While he’s on the downside, I think he would be a great-fill in if Matsui is hurt for an extended period. You have to consider that Petco has probably really sapped his power numbers.

I would never disrespect the game and would play for the league minimum. Plus I once threw a no-hitter in 8th grade. I’m also in way better shape than Ponson. Let me pitch against the Mets!

  104. MoBoy June 19th, 2008 at 11:50 am

Hopefully JOba can get more then two strikeouts.I like how Girardi said it’s okay because you don’t want to have too much strikeouts because you might throw too many pitches.

Thats like saying A-Rod shouldn’t hit too many homeruns.JOba better start dominating and not end up like WAng having 199 hits in 199 innings.Joba needs to step it up.THe Astors and now Padres aren’t good teams.

  105. Martin June 19th, 2008 at 11:52 am

“Damon is fast, and he hits WAY better than Gardner ever will.”

I wouldn’t call Damon fast. I would call Crawford fast. I’d say Gardner is fast. It’s always interesting when people are sure about what a 24 year old will ever do.

  106. EricVA June 19th, 2008 at 11:52 am

    Ok MoBoy…

It’s NOTHING like saying A-Rod shouldn’t hit too many homeruns. They want Joba to go deep into the game today and if he strikes out ten he’ll only go 5-6 instead of 7. A dominating pitcher doesn’t have to strike everybody out to be effective (see Wang).

  107. RSM June 19th, 2008 at 11:53 am

I disagree – if A-Rod is hitting homeruns then chances are he isn’t fouling off enough pitches and making the opposing pitcher work, which is the Yankee plan.

    Of course, I’m just kidding.

  109. JoeT 28 in 09!! June 19th, 2008 at 11:57 am

I agree with what girardi said – I’d MUCH rather Joba get a guy to ground out in 3 pitches then strike him out in 6-7. He’s a power pitcher and in a situation where he needs a strike out he’ll be able to get it, but for the most part keep the pitch count down, go deep into ball games and throw up as many zeros as you can

  110. Y's Guy June 19th, 2008 at 12:00 pm

“Don’t try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they’re fascist. Throw some ground balls – it’s more democratic.”

I wonder when the yanks are gonna have bernie pull the countdown lever

  114. B. B. June 19th, 2008 at 12:02 pm

I don’t get it. We’re having a discussion about adding a piece here and a piece there when we already have too many pieces that don’t add up over the long haul to the ultimate goal of winning another championship.

Hopefully behind the scenes the powers that be are exploring every opportunity to sell high in regards to Damon, Giambi, and Matsui. What team needs 4 DH’s (Posada today and maybe more than we are guessing right now in the future)?

The schedule for June has been very kind. When Jul and Aug roll around, watch out. I believe they will return to .500 ball. They’ll be facing quality pitching again and quality line-ups.

This is the same team that couldn’t do anything with it’s post season opportunities the last two seasons because it didn’t have enough pitching and it’s own line-up couldn’t do anything against front line pitching.

  115. Y's Guy June 19th, 2008 at 12:03 pm

jerry coleman should do it today, although i dont know if he’s ever sold insurance.

“Hopefully JOba can get more then two strikeouts.I like how Girardi said it’s okay because you don’t want to have too much strikeouts because you might throw too many pitches.”

Simple mathematics. Getting as manay outs as possible in the fewest pitches possible is always the objective. I like that Joba pitched to contact in that last game. I also like that when he’s facing a runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out late in a one run ballgame situation, he’s got the stuff to get the strikeout when he needs it.

  119. tim June 19th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

I’m betting $100 on joba throwing a complete game perfect game 81 pitches 27 strikeouts plus he will pinch hit and hit a grandslam and a 3 run homerun leading hank to decide to change the Yankees into an nl team starting tomorrow and joba hits for every pitcher. He will end the year 35-2 with a 0.56 era 750 strikeouts 6 perfect games 10 no hitters 89 homeruns and 267 RBI

  124. Eric June 19th, 2008 at 12:18 pm

    Fredo Corleone:

I know Cashman doesn’t want Gardner sitting on the bench and that’s why he hasn’t been called up yet. However, I don’t think it would hurt him very much to be called up at the end of August just as the AAA season is winding down. I don’t know the exact date that minor league ball ends, but I think that playoffs start in early September. If Gardner has to miss the last 5-10 games of the season and the AAA playoffs in order to serve as a pinch runner / late defensive replacement to help the Yankees make the playoffs, as well as a more diversified team in the playoffs, I think that is a price worth paying.

  125. Joe Monte June 19th, 2008 at 12:20 pm

Let’s end the talk of brining in another OF via trade. We have Melky, Abreu and Damon healthy and that’s enough. Gardner would get the call to the big leagues if Matsui’s knee will continue to dog him all year and regulating him to the OF on a more normal basis. As much as the Yankees say they don’t need to stress the bench, I think they will need to bring Gardner up as that backup OF to bring more speed off the bench and provide a day off for Abreu and Damon if Matsui’s knee limits him to being only a DH.

Having to carry three catchers is obviously limiting the roster right now. If Posada can show he can throw with a good amount of shoulder strength, then Cashman get send down / release Moeller and bring up Gardner (need to keep Gonzalez and Betemit as the backup infielders).

Also, what about giving Robertson a shot for the big league bullpen?

  128. mel June 19th, 2008 at 12:29 pm

Today’s pitcher was claimed off waivers from Toronto. He pitched 2 innings of relief against the Yankees last year (1 ER).

He’s been a gem for the Padres. Let’s hope he’s as nervous as the last Peavy and Wolfe were.

I asked this last night, wanted to know what you guys thought. Looks like the Tigers are getting back on track. Do you guys think the White Sox are the real deal this year, or do the Tigers catch them? And does the wild card come out of the Central or East?

  129. tim June 19th, 2008 at 12:30 pm

“Do you guys think the White Sox are the real deal this year, or do the Tigers catch them? And does the wild card come out of the Central or East?”

Barring anymore serious injuries, I see no way that the Yankees, Red Sox and Angels miss the playoffs. I buy into the White Sox, especially with Beuhrle semmingly finding himself. Good pen, decent rotation, and enough offense to make it happen.

  132. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 12:33 pm

“Do you guys think the White Sox are the real deal this year, or do the Tigers catch them? And does the wild card come out of the Central or East?”

As long as Carmona and Martinez are hurt, I can’t see anyone challenging them–not unless the Tigers make a crazy run.

  135. tim June 19th, 2008 at 12:36 pm

I honestly think joba is the next jeter.

  136. Wave Your Hat June 19th, 2008 at 12:36 pm

Maybe I’m missing something but with Matsui hurting are the Yankees really going to play with only three outfielders? According to Baseball Reference Betamit has a grand total of 5+ innings in the outfield in his career and Gonzalez has never played there in the majors (1 minor league inning). Doesn’t that make two extra catchers seem a little reckless?

  137. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 12:39 pm

“I honestly think joba is the next jeter.”

If Joba gets the rings there might be an argument, but for now, Jeter is in a class by himself.

  138. Fredo Corleone June 19th, 2008 at 12:39 pm

“Maybe I’m missing something but with Matsui hurting are the Yankees really going to play with only three outfielders?”

Been that way all year. Whenever Damon or Matsui DH, they only have 3 OF’s. When/if they abandon the three catchers plan, they will likely add that 4th OF.

  139. mel June 19th, 2008 at 12:40 pm

    Fredo,

    Thnx.

    Rebecca,

They don’t need to make a crazy run. I know it’s interleague, but the Tigers have been chipping away. They’re only 7 back of the White Sox in the loss column and 5 back of us. They were left for dead, but have a chance to rear its ugly head if they leave Dontrelle in the minors.

The Yankees only worry about themselves, but us fans have to keep a side eye on the others. :)

  140. EricVA June 19th, 2008 at 12:40 pm

They have 4 outfielders…Matsui is temporarily out. I doubt they need a 5th outfielder unless somebody is out for a week or so.

  141. Wave Your Hat June 19th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

No it’s different. If Matsui or Damon DH, then if one of the three outfielders gets hurt we just lose the DH, plus we had Duncan most of the time. Matsui had his knee drained last night, so he’s not available. If God forbid one of our outfielders has to leave the game today, we’re in deep doodoo.

  142. Fredo Corleone June 19th, 2008 at 12:45 pm

Speaking of day games, what a break for the Red Sox (and the Phils). How’d they get at 1PM game yesterday? Both are off today and Boston goes home while Philly stays in Philly. Gives the Sox, who are banged up (No Ortiz, Ramirez or Youklis yesterday) better than 48 hours between games. Pretty freakin’ fortuitous. Yankees never catch that break.

  143. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 12:45 pm

mel: This is true. Likewise, I think the Yanks can chip away at Boston–we still have most of our games against them left to play!

  144. whozat June 19th, 2008 at 12:48 pm

“He’s been a gem for the Padres. Let’s hope he’s as nervous as the last Peavy and Wolfe were.”

I’m a bit worried. This is one of those junkballing righties that the Yankees seem to stink against. He doesn’t walk a lot of guys, his problem has been giving up lots of hits in the past. For some reason, they never seem to hit these guys and I just don’t understand it.

  145. EricVA June 19th, 2008 at 12:48 pm

If somebody gets hurt I’d think Betemit goes and plays left field. That’s my guess.

  146. S.o.S.27 June 19th, 2008 at 12:49 pm

    BFF,
I mentioned the Tigers yesterday. They have been on a roll of late and their hitting has been clicking on all cylinders. I am worried about them because i dont think the white sox are going to fall off. Therefore its not just going to be catching the Rays or A’S. Its making sure that the tigers dont catch us. Come to think of it. Who cares? We’re going to win the division. Let the Sox worry about the Wild Card.

  147. whozat June 19th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

“If God forbid one of our outfielders has to leave the game today, we’re in deep doodoo.”

Well…it certainly won’t be GOOD, but deep doo-doo? You can get by for a few innings with an awful corner OFer. You might lose the game, but no one’s going to die. Besides…the alternative is what, exactly? Sending down a pitcher and losing him to the minors for 10 days so that we can have…a backup OFer? Losing Moeller to another organization before we’re sure that Jorge’s shoulder will hold up?

  148. matteo June 19th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

I need some advice from the New Yorkers on here…

I live in AZ and I’m making a pilgrimage to the Stadium in early July. I want to try to get some tickets for the Sox series, but I recently found out scalping is illegal in NY (it’s legal in AZ because it’s still the wild west over here). So what’s the best way to get tickets? And what’s the protocol for getting scalped tickets? Do I have meet a dude in a dark alley?

    Thanks for the help.

  149. mel June 19th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

    Rebecca,

That’s right. Another factor is the weakness of the Central (one team with a winning record) and the strength of the East (one team with a losing record).

We’ve done poorly against the east so far. That’s going to have to change if we’re going to go anywhere.

  150. EricVA June 19th, 2008 at 12:52 pm

    Matteo,

    Try stubhub.com

That or just go to the stadium. There are a lot of people just standing there selling tickets. Although for the Sox it’s gonna cost you. No dark alley needed, just a lot of cash.

I wouldn’t come to NY and count on scalped tickets. You’re probably best off getting them off MLB.com. Sites like StubHub charge a ridiculous $16 shipping.

  155. Fredo Corleone June 19th, 2008 at 12:53 pm

“He’s been a gem for the Padres. Let’s hope he’s as nervous as the last Peavy and Wolfe were”

Don’t think it had anything to do with nerves. Who gets nervous in June baseball games? Wolf is awful outside of Petco and Peavy was in his 2nd start off the DL (and he made no rehab starts before coming off). I think that’s why the results were what they were.

Doubt this kid today will be nervous either, but I’d guess he gets hit pretty hard because he’s not very good.

Unreal but scalping is now legal in NY but there are certain “rules” in terms of how far from the stadium you can do it etc

  160. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

All of the Padres starters have higher road ERAs because their park is so ridiculously pitcher friendly.

  161. Fredo Corleone June 19th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

Tigers are fattening up a little on the NL (who in the AL isn’t???). That’s why they’re making a bit of a run. Just can’t take them seriously with that pitching. They MIGHT be able to catch the White Sox, but they aren’t close to the class of the Yankees or Boston….or Tampa. That division isn’t producing 2 90 win teams. The AL East will.

  162. S.o.S.27 June 19th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

  165. Patrick (the good one) June 19th, 2008 at 1:01 pm

I think if anyone catches the White Sox it will be the Indians. They have a lot of key injuries but if they can pull together and stay afloat I think they can make a big run in August/September.

  166. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

matteo: Toss up, depends on the seats and the scalper.

  167. rich June 19th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

“Speaking of day games, what a break for the Red Sox (and the Phils). Yankees never catch that break.”

i was under the impression that start time is the home teams decision. the yankees could do the same thing before off days at home but its not a good way to maximize profits from concessions.

  168. al arodien June 19th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

What’s gonna cost more: stubhub or a scalper?

scalper. eccept if you could bargin good!

  169. Fredo Corleone June 19th, 2008 at 1:03 pm

“ESPN wouldnt happened to have made the 2008 mlb schedule up?Im now 100% sure its a freekin conspiracy. Next you will see boston being able to serve their suspensions in the off season.”

Pretty odd scheduling in that it had nothing to do with TV (College WS and Euros on the ESPNs). Did the Phils just want a businessman’s special??? Very unsual…and rather timely for Boston.

  170. al arodien June 19th, 2008 at 1:04 pm

or jeter could play outfield. he will probbaly end his carier there( if he plans to play till age 45)

  171. pat June 19th, 2008 at 1:06 pm

If you really want to go to the game don’t count on a scalper. With stubhub you’ll at least have guaranteed seats and some choice over where they are.

  172. Wave Your Hat June 19th, 2008 at 1:06 pm

“If God forbid one of our outfielders has to leave the game today, we’re in deep doodoo.”

“Well…it certainly won’t be GOOD, but deep doo-doo? You can get by for a few innings with an awful corner OFer. You might lose the game, but no one’s going to die. Besides…the alternative is what, exactly? Sending down a pitcher and losing him to the minors for 10 days so that we can have…a backup OFer? Losing Moeller to another organization before we’re sure that Jorge’s shoulder will hold up?”

I hate this notion that the Yanks are going to make the playoffs no matter what, so we can afford to lose games. We don’t need all these relief pitchers, Billy Traber should be down and Brett Gardner should be up, at least until Matsui is 100%. Plus, as much as I like him, the Yanks don’t need Moeller.

  173. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 1:07 pm

oh boy Fatcessa only, and then Fruity Pebbles for the rest of the week

“i was under the impression that start time is the home teams decision. the yankees could do the same thing before off days at home but its not a good way to maximize profits from concessions.”

Probably. I’m not blaming Boston for the start time. I know they had nothing to do with it. Just commenting on how well it worked out for them.

  175. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Bronson Arroyo will save us!! June 19th, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Basketball real quick. I heard yesterday that Micheal Beasley was listed at 6-10 in college. He now is 6-7? Either they sized him with his high tops or he has taking 1 too many showers. Seriously. How could that happen?

  177. TKinDC June 19th, 2008 at 1:10 pm

    * off topic but interesting -

    BLEICH IS BACK

It really shouldn’t come as a surprise, but Coach Marquess announced after the game that he would start junior left-handed pitcher Jeremy Bleich against Georgia on Friday. In his last start against Florida State, the veteran allowed a run on six hits in five innings. He also struck out seven and walked two. Overall, Bleich is now 3-2 with a 1.02 ERA in 44 innings. Opposing teams are hitting .203 off him.

  178. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 1:10 pm

    Someone get my smelling salts…

    Bronson Arroyo! Take a shot!

  181. bphill June 19th, 2008 at 1:10 pm

wow, this is a way to start.

  182. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 1:10 pm

    Bleich pitches tomorrow on ESPN

  183. jason June 19th, 2008 at 1:11 pm

  184. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 1:11 pm

    SHOT #1

  185. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 1:12 pm

    Easy inning. Me like.

Hope the Yankee bats can do some damage early and take San Diego right out of the game.

  186. jennifer June 19th, 2008 at 1:12 pm

Now he is back to being just average as he let up a ground out to third.

  190. Fredo Corleone June 19th, 2008 at 1:12 pm

“Basketball real quick. I heard yesterday that Micheal Beasley was listed at 6-10 in college. He now is 6-7?”

    Shrinkage???

He never looked 6-10 on TV. Scouting report on ESPN has him at 6-8, which seems about right.

  191. E June 19th, 2008 at 1:12 pm

quick 1-2-3…joba looks great. commanding the fastball well and throwing it at 96. 13 pitches perfecto

  192. Anthony Murillo June 19th, 2008 at 1:13 pm

    Jesus Christ.

  195. bphill June 19th, 2008 at 1:13 pm

do you really think that boy was waiting for kay to say the lineup?

  196. ItalianGreco June 19th, 2008 at 1:14 pm

    Nice..Joba looks good so far

  197. CB June 19th, 2008 at 1:14 pm

All season long Sterling and Waldman went on and on and on about how they would never move Joba out of the pen and how it would be a big mistake to do so.

Now they are both saying how it was such a great move by Cashman to move Joba into the rotation. Otherwise they would be looking for another. Waldman actually quoted Dave Eiland when he said Joba has been a starter his whole life. That’s what he should be doing. And she said it in this way that made it sound like, of course Joba should be starting. Hasn’t it always been obvious to everyone?

It’s just remarkable. All season long people in the media went on and on and on about how he couldn’t be moved from the all important 8th inning role… yaddaa yadda yadda shorten the game yadda yadda Stanton Nelson…

And now its as if none of that every happened. Its like they live in a world of complete amnesia.

  198. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 1:15 pm

  200. Nick in SF June 19th, 2008 at 1:16 pm

2 K’s in the first inning… MoBoy gets results!

It’s too bad the day/night doubleheader against the Mets isn’t in another month or so; once Joba’s pitch count gets up over 200, he could pitch both games.

  201. Ron June 19th, 2008 at 1:16 pm

    Johnny Damon is amazing.

  202. bphill June 19th, 2008 at 1:16 pm

She talks so damn loud into the mike it’s ridiculous too.
Anyone watching on TV please update as I’m in Fla…does she have “compromising” photos of George?

  211. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 1:19 pm

I thought San Diego’s defense was supposed to be good? Not that I’m complaining…

Abreu, your OPS is under .800. Fix that.

  214. Patrick (the good one) June 19th, 2008 at 1:19 pm

Cash, trade for Erik Bedard please.

    he sure did fredo…

  216. mel June 19th, 2008 at 1:20 pm

T’aint pritty, but I’ll take it.

  217. CB June 19th, 2008 at 1:20 pm

Joba threw 13 pitches that inning. 11 fastballs (all 4 seamers I believe) and only 2 sliders.

For his age he really knows how to pitch and learns very quickly. In the pen he kind of fell in love with his slider. That won’t work as a starter – hitters get used to it and start laying off. That’s what happened to him this year with the slider. He’ll use it more selectively as a starter.

He sits 95-98. That fastball is going to build his career. And he’s getting back to using that as his foundation.

  218. Ron June 19th, 2008 at 1:20 pm

    Very productive out, Bobby.

    Make ‘em pay, Alex.

  219. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 1:21 pm

“First time I heard Jetes step up and help Robi”

When Robi had that 4 for 4 game against Toronto he said everyday Jeter is behind him in the batting cage telling him to try to hit line drives.

I don’t know why people think that Jeter doesn’t help out his teammates simply cause he’s quiet.

  222. TKinDC June 19th, 2008 at 1:22 pm

Nice contact by Bobby even though he’s been down a little bit lately – he had a ribbie last night right?

  223. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 1:22 pm

Ack, Alex, you were not supposed to do that!

  224. matteo June 19th, 2008 at 1:23 pm

  226. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 1:23 pm

if he could recognize the offspeed he would hit .390 instead he’s stuck w/ the fastball

  227. Patrick (the good one) June 19th, 2008 at 1:23 pm

“for waht they’d ask for, people on this site would kill themselves if that happened.”

Maybe you are right but it seems like Seattle is getting ready for a major rebuild. Its possible that Cashman could make a decent trade for Bedard.

  228. bphill June 19th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

is that a scout behind home plate?

hes got a radar gun and keeps taking notes after each pitch…he is on the right side of the screen.

  229. Al from BK June 19th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

Joba looked filthy. Gotta score these runs.

  230. mel June 19th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

    Brandon,

We only hear a fraction of what goes on in the clubhouse. Jeter doesn’t prepare a press release everytime he does good.

  231. Ron June 19th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

I have a feeling this is a guy who will hold us scoreless for 3 or 4, and then fall apart in the 5th as the Yankees get more looks.

  232. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

I don’t know why people think that Jeter doesn’t help out his teammates simply cause he’s quiet.

Was this a serious question ? Last season it Alex and Bobby who stepped in for Robi and Melky that’s been said for some time today is the first time I have heard Jetes talk about what to do w/ a pitch w/ Robi, before today it was hit line drives as an advice.

you’re still going to have to give up major talent, and the M’s are going to want to recollect pieces similar to what they gave to get him.

think about a top pitcher of choice, austin jackson, plus two other pieces.

    never happen.

to my dismay, Cashman isnt into the big splash game anymore.

Lane Meyer (N o M a a s, NY): Keith, what can you tell us about potential 2009 Draft Eligible FRESHMAN (never seen that before), Yankee draft pick, and teammate of Anthony Hewitt’s, Chris Dwyer? Does the lefty have top of the rotation potential? Thanks.

Keith Law: (1:31 PM ET ) Back of the rotation potential. Solid-average fastball, chance for an above-average breaking ball. Would like to know how the heck he’s 20 in high school, though. I believe the Royals took a DE freshman out of BYU who had taken two years for his Mormon mission, 2002 draft, named Jensen.

  273. TKinDC June 19th, 2008 at 1:35 pm

    from mlbtraderumors.com

“I’m not going to list off Bavasi’s mistakes here; we all know he did a poor job. Looking forward, you have to wonder if Pelekoudas will be more willing to trade Erik Bedard than Bavasi would’ve been. He could also move quickly to release Richie Sexson. Geoff Baker believes a housecleaning is much more likely now.”

They were also predicted in another article to release Sexson shortly. Apparently there are also problems with Ichiro and johjima (sp?)

  274. Patrick (the good one) June 19th, 2008 at 1:35 pm

“Yes. I’d love to give up talent for a guy who won’t throw 200 IP at any point in his career due to a chronic hip problem.”

Are you joking? If Cashman could get Bedard at a good price you wouldn’t want him? That is ridiculous..

  275. sunny615 June 19th, 2008 at 1:35 pm

well, he should be at 105 pitches by the 4th inning.

  276. bphill June 19th, 2008 at 1:36 pm

  278. Russell NY June 19th, 2008 at 1:36 pm

Apparently there are also problems with Ichiro and johjima (sp?)

    ———–
According to Rosenthal, Ichiro is percieved as selfish and some of the pitchers don’t like to throw to Jojima and some people are envious of his contract as well…

  283. MoBoy June 19th, 2008 at 1:37 pm

Hope Joba can get that lucky more often.

  284. Ron June 19th, 2008 at 1:37 pm

  285. Fredo Corleone June 19th, 2008 at 1:37 pm

“And I’d like Jay Bruce over Mike Cameron.”

Not quite a fair analogy, but I take your point. Gonzalez is 27 next year, so he’s not a total youngster, but the Pads have a sweet deal with him thru 2010.

  286. Nick in SF June 19th, 2008 at 1:38 pm

As we mentioned earlier, there are times when you NEED the strikeout. Hairston’s AB was one of those. Not much kinder to a pitcher than the lower third of an NL lineup, but that was a great job.

  330. sunny615 June 19th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

    From Keith Law chat:

Chris (Staten Island, NY): Keith, Should the Yankees give Brett Gardner a chance in CF? Melky has a putrid .688 OPS ranked 16th among MLB centerfielders and is playing an average defensive centerfield. Gardner has a .835 OPS at AAA and is a definite upgrade defensively and on the bases with his speed. Melky could then be packaged with a young pitcher to maybe aquire a decent lefty for the pen.

Keith Law: (1:11 PM ET ) Where are all of the people who were telling me last year – and this winter – that Melky was a star, and not a very good fourth outfielder? I’m not a Gardner fan – he’s just a fourth/fifth outfielder too. The Yankees shouldn’t be settling for that in centerfield in a year where they’re contending.

    ——————————————————————————–
Brendon (Guilderland NY): You aren’t a melky fan, you aren’t a gardner fan…are you an Austin Jackson fan?

Keith Law: (1:14 PM ET ) Yes. Ultimately, these guys are all keeping the spot warm for him.

  331. mel June 19th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels a little smug when Joba is does his thing. I think of Mark Teahan of the Royals and his off the cuff comment. The other one, too. David Delucci.

In recent times, I’ve never heard the Yankees talk bad about another player or talk trash like that.

  332. ANSKY June 19th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

    Pete

I can understand how its important to what you do that Girardi be straight up with info, but I’m not so bothered by Girardi holding some injury info close to the vest.

I would think that if an opposing manager doesn’t know the availability of a guy 2-3 days in advance, it makes it a little more challenging for him to match up. We always see the Yanks promote or demote guys, align rest days for the lineup or the rotation, or use (abuse?) the bullpen with consideration for possible match ups that far ahead. All the opponents do that too.

Depending on each case it might be OK to go ‘full disclosure’ or tight to the vest. Sometimes its hard to tell right away. If I was a manager I wouldn’t want whether I was being open or not to allude to potentially anything important that could strategically help the other team even a day too early.

So even if a particular injury may not be serious at all, I think its better to have a policy across the board that makes it hard to read in all cases.

Of course if they already know we’ll find out a day or two later anyways. But if the the opposing manager could potentially gain an advantage by knowing this in some cases, even if there’s no advantage in other cases case, I would limit going public with at least some info in all cases.

Personally (as a fan and a reader) I can wait a day or two for the full blown version of the info. I’d also rather not see that cost the team/manager in terms of bad PR. I respect you Pete but I’d lean towards giving him the benefit of the doubt if Girardi doesn’t show all his cards even when it seems harmless to do so. I’d rather the other team not know exactly how many days off Mo or Matsui or whoever may need or why.

Here’s a prime example: If Terry Francona knows a week in advance that Posada resting his shoulder for 2 days against Kansas City (for example) rather than “letting a blister on his foot heal” or “just getting an extra day off”, everyone on the Sox will run on him when they come to town a week later and that could potentially aggravate his shoulder enough to effect the season. If being a little evasive (even if just for one day) about Matsui or Wang’s condition allows such a non-disclosure to be more effective on another day, I’m all for it.

  343. SJ44 June 19th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

Beyond the attitude and hip problems (which are significant), here is the #1 problem in trying to get Bedard. Matching up with Seattle.

In order for Seattle to move him, they have to get back a similar package to what they gave up to get him in the first place. If they don’t, they would have made two mistakes with him. Getting him AND giving him away. They can’t afford to do that.

He is signed through next year so, they don’t have to trade him. One could argue that if they hold onto him, they have a better chance of getting a better package for him in the off-season.

They gave up Adam Jones, an excellent CF prospect, George Sherrill, now the Orioles closer, a 20 year pitcher is was one of their 3 best starting pitching prospects, and another player to get Bedard. That’s a lot of talent.

For the Yankees to match up, they would have to give up AJax, Melancon and Hughes. That ain’t happenin’.

The best thing for the Yankees to do right now is sit tight. Try to get to the AS Break between 2-4 games out of a playoff spot. At that point, they will have a better idea of the trade marketplace and their own needs.

In the meantime, we have to hope they hit like crazy and find some luck with Giese and/or Ponson for a few starts.

The longer they are able to buy some time, the better chance they have to make a deal that makes sense.

  344. mel June 19th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

    TurnTwo,

How Joba got killed for the fist pump, but no one said anything about Tiger’s (triple) fist pump this weekend.

Flash was like whatever, and was middle of the road about it.

    They both have good points.

  345. Ron June 19th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

Ichiro is not a very good offensive player. He has little power, he doesn’t walk, and his batting average is his life. As he gets older, the level of performance separating him from below-average gets thinner and thinner. He’s not worth anything.

  346. sunny615 June 19th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

From Keith Law on Josh Banks:

Scott (San Diego, CA): What are you thoughts on the Padres’s Josh Banks? Only 2 unintentional walks, 26 hits, 19Ks, 4ER in 30in (counting 2 today) .

Keith Law: (1:52 PM ET ) Always been a big Banks fan, but he became obscenely homer-prone in AAA – his fastball is hard but true, and he barely used his CB when he was with Toronto, so as a two-pitch guy (he has a good splitter) he wasn’t cut out for starting. Control was always great; I think he had about a 60-inning no-walk streak in AA in 2004 or 2005. The move to SD was about the best thing that could have happened to him – huge ballpark will help him – but unless that CB has come along, he’s probably just a back-end starter.

  347. CB June 19th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

“just out of curiosity.. why aren”t we seeing any change-ups?… 5k’s already!”

He’s only gone through the order once. He should never use all that many different pitches early on because his fastball is just so dominant. That should always be his foundation.

That inning he threw his first curve ball. He’ll mix in a few more curve balls next time through the order. Probably some two seam fastballs as well.

Quite honestly – depending on how his stuff is any given day he just may not need to throw the change up.

  348. E June 19th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

also with bedard, a lot of people question if he really likes the game of baseball. Many say he doesn’t enjoy it so he doesn’t pitch to his potential. Who wants a guy with that attitude?

  349. whozat June 19th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

“just out of curiosity.. why aren”t we seeing any change-ups?… 5k’s already!”

Because he’s still gotta turn the lineup over a couple more times. You want to keep some of your weapons for later. He’s got the curve and the change (also, the change isn’t that consistent a pitch yet) to use when he sees these guys again in the coming innings.

  350. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 19th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

This Banks is pissing me off.

  351. TurnTwo June 19th, 2008 at 1:58 pm

thanks, mel. thats one of my biggest issues with listening to Kay, is that he never has anything new to say… seems to just lean on the same things over and over and over again.

of course, amongst other gripes, but ill stop there.

  352. SamVA June 19th, 2008 at 1:58 pm

why are we so worried about giese’s starts? from what I have seen so far, yes he hasn’t really had to face a power driven line-up, but he can pitch pretty well in the majors…

  353. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

…This is going to be a 1-0 game, isn’t it?

  354. TKinDC June 19th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

“Ichiro is the face of the franchise for the Mariners. You’d be talking Joba, Melky and Jackson just for the privilege of discussing it.”

Not to pick on Rebecca – heck I do this too – but I think it is ridiculous more often than not when we try to piece together packages with all the complexity involved.

Look at the A-Rod/Soriano deal – who would have imagined that that was a possibility until it actually happened. Seattle might want to get out from under Ichiro’s gigantic deal and do a total overhaul of the squad. You just don’t know until the deals get done (or not) what motivates teams in mega moves.

  355. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

TK: I was just remarking on how impossible it’d be to even talk about Ichiro in a deal.

I mean, I guess you could do it, but aside from the fact that the Yankees have no need for him, the price would be ridiculous.

  356. Ron June 19th, 2008 at 2:01 pm

The problem is that Volquez was getting lit up by the AL. And after losing Texeira, the Rangers needed offense.

  357. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 2:01 pm

And the Yankees don’t seem to want to score today…which I guess is okay if San Diego doesn’t want to score either.

  358. sunny615 June 19th, 2008 at 2:02 pm

I think we’ll see a break through on Bank next inning. This can’t last forever… (i hope)

until next year, Rebecca. seems to me there’s a empty spot in RF he’d fit nicely into…. just sayin, not that ive thought about it or anything ;-)

i agree with TK, though. if the Rosenthal report is true, perhaps they take back a lot of lower level/high ceiling guys just to let Ichiro move on and clean up the clubhouse a little bit.

    you just never know.

  362. Ron June 19th, 2008 at 2:03 pm

We already have Damon. We don’t really need Ichiro.

  363. SamVA June 19th, 2008 at 2:03 pm

it has to be hard to try to predict what he is going to throw though…
he does have 8 pitches and im not saying he is going to throw all of them at any time but he seems like a decent pitcher with a lot of movement on his fastball

  364. S.o.S.27 June 19th, 2008 at 2:04 pm

    From my earlier post
“Doubt this kid today will be nervous either, but I’d guess he gets hit pretty hard because he’s not very good.”

Those are the guys that we usually struggle with. The ones that arent very good.”

Man i hope im wrong today. This is frustrating watching Joba dominate and not giving him any runs to work with.

could Jason have gotten to that ?

  367. SJ44 June 19th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

    TK,

There is a 0% chance Seattle trades Ichiro. He is the face of their franchise, has a full no trade clause, and sells more season tickets than almost any single player in the game.

He also has floor seat season tickets for the Lakers. If he was every to approve any trade, it would be to stay on the West Coast.

He’s not coming east for anybody.

  368. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

    SJ –

I agree about Ichiro getting moved – the fact that he is Japanese makes him a very good fit for that market too.

He would also have to agree to a move right? I would guess no matter who is the permanent GM there, they are going to do their very best to make Ichiro happy. He is a one-of-a-kind talent.

With Cincy in town for the weekend, ir could be a chance for Brian Cashman to have a face to face meeting with Walt Jocketty the Cincy GM and discuss deal possibilities.
Cashman must have a good idea of who he could part with in the system which could include Betemit, Steven White, and Chris Britton among others.

Once he learns how, he becomes the complete starter everybody expects he can be.

Looks like Joba will get through 6 innings max, hopefully he can buckle down and put up 2 more zeroes. Now its the offense’s turn, from what I’ve seen this guy has a high 80′s fastball and a changeup. He shouldn’t be that hard to score on.

SportsNation Keith Law: (2:17 PM ET ) I did not, but Taylor wasn’t a bust – he blew out his shoulder in a bar fight. Stuff- and delivery-wise, he was one of the best pitching prospects of the last 25 years.

  445. SJ44 June 19th, 2008 at 2:24 pm

Ichiro was never a FA. He signed his extension with the Mariners during last season.

He looked at the Yankees when he first came over prior to signing with Seattle.

Here’s my thing about trade proposals. I think folks need to be realistic about who the Yankees can actually acquire.

Anybody can write a rumor column on a website. When you see them, take a step back and think logically for a moment.

Sure, Seattle could offer up Bedard. However, what’s the incentive for them to take less than they gave up when they got him? None.

Ken Rosenthal will write 100 rumor columns between now and the deadline. Most of them are non-sourced, pie in the sky ideas from his own brain.

The game is awash with cash. There isn’t a single team in baseball that needs to trade anybody because of money. There won’t be cash dumps at the deadline.

Teams also aren’t in the business of trading their best players for the dregs in the Yankees, or anybody else’s, farm system.

Players like Peavy, Ichiro, etc, are not getting traded regardless of how badly their teams play. They are guys that are drawing cards for their respective franchises and have also signed new deals.

If you look at the Yankees right now, 5 guys are untouchable in their system: Hughes, Montero, AJax, Brackman, and Melancon.

After that, depending on the player available, the offer, and the players you have to give up in return, everybody else is on the table.

Doesn’t mean they can make deals. Just means guys are available.

I think they will make a deal or two at the deadline. I don’t know if it will be something big. That depends on who is actually available. However, I do think they will add a starter.

I can’t see them going the rest of the year with Rasner, Giese, and Ponson fighting for spots in the rotation. They are stop gap guys and nothing more.

  446. Al from BK June 19th, 2008 at 2:24 pm

Joba Chamberlain (South Bronx, NYC): Glad you tuned into my start. Think I can be a top 5 pitcher within 3 years? What’s my ratings for my curve/change? Can they be legit out pitches?

Keith Law: (2:25 PM ET ) Yes. Both of those pitches project to 50 (average) or 55 (one grade above) for me, with the curve ahead of the change when I saw him start last summer. The slider will always be his out pitch, though.

  462. BBB June 19th, 2008 at 2:30 pm

88 pitches through 5 – one more inning for Joba.
I think the Joba to the rotation experiment is working. Once he keeps the walks down he will be downright scary.
I know this is the Padres we are talking about, but so far 5 innings 4 hits and 7 Ks works for me every time. With the offense of the last few days that will usually be good for a win.

I’m sure after seeing him pitch like that in person as a yankee fan news of his injury must have been particularly bad. What promise.

In any generation how many left handed pitchers are there who can throw 97-98 with a plus breaking pitch and good command?

And to think it was a bar fight that ruined his career. If it had been an elbow he’d probably at least gone on to still pitch in the majors.

But with a shoulder just no chance. Just a real shame. Must have been terrible for him and his family.

  498. Ron June 19th, 2008 at 2:39 pm

In the weaker league, Bronson Arroyo has given up:

    14 home runs

    104 hits in 86 innings

    32 walks in 86 innings

Batter are hitting .301 against him.

Lefties are crushing him, at a .337 clip.

    We want him WHY?

Melky would still be on 1st if Torre was the manager.

  541. SJ44 June 19th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Yes, Brackman is that untouchable. A RH David Price.

If he didn’t get hurt, he would have been the first or second pick in the draft last year and would be knocking on the door to the big leagues right now.

I’ve been on the road the past 10 days and one of the most encouraging things I heard from some baseball people is, they believe Brackman could pitch in Hawaii this fall.

That tells me, his rehab is going very, very well.

Brackman has a huge advantage in his rehab. He’s a very well conditioned athlete. TJ surgery has a nearly 100% success rate in terms of fixing the injury. What makes the player come back whole is the rehab. The better conditioned you are, the better chance you have at a full recovery.

If he can make it back in the Fall, and he can get back to what he was, he could be in the majors by mid-season next year. He has the talent to rocket through the system if he is healthy.

    Fredo,

Perhaps. It all depends on two things: What are the other offers for CC and does he really want to trade him?

You get close to the deadline and you realize you can’t get one or two of the Top 5 on any team’s list, you reassess your position.

Remember, to trade CC, he has to get more than the two draft picks he would get when he loses him to justify the trade.

As we speak today, no question, no CC without giving up one of the Top 5. But, what if Cleveland is 10 out on July 28 (3 days before the deadline) and the 3 players the Yankees have on the table is the best offer he has?

That’s the question we can answer right now.

  542. TKinDC June 19th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

    That works too!

Bets on whether Francessa calls him jorge molina in a second?

Look guys (and girls) as fun as it is to rip on Bronson Arroyo and Mike Francessa the truth is, Arroyo is an above average pitcher. Just go look at his numbers. Obviously this year he has not been above average but in previous years he has. I do not want Bronson on the Yankees and frankly I don’t think the Yanks need him but Francessa isn’t THAT crazy for wanting him.

  550. Patrick (the good one) June 19th, 2008 at 2:50 pm

my father who was going to the stadium back in the 30′s was with me and said taylor was the best he had ever seen as a yankee at any level.

i was a celtic fan back then and from a fan point of view it felt like when len bias died except that taylor didn’t die.

but for all practical purposes he was done as a yankee.

  588. Ron June 19th, 2008 at 2:59 pm

Good move by Girardi. Chamberlain was clearly tiring, and Tony Clark has been a tough out today.

  589. SJ44 June 19th, 2008 at 2:59 pm

Girardi is doing the right thing here. You can’t take a risk with Joba.

If you are going to err, you err on the side of caution.

He’s still not as stretched out as he will be.

Overall, a very solid outing again for Joba.

  590. Matt June 19th, 2008 at 2:59 pm

This is stupid at this point. Yes, let’s take him out for his “pitch count” when he just fanned the first 2 guys in the inning! Brilliant! Yeah, he looks so tired, blowing the fastball by guys and throwing wicked tight sliders…

Why not let him finish the inning and have a chance for his first win as a starter? Let him face Clark and if he gets on take him out. Don’t just yank him after he K’d 2 guys.

  591. Russell NY June 19th, 2008 at 2:59 pm

Smart move by Giarardi… 105 limit and he was at 100. If the next guy gets a hit not only do you have to take Joba out anyway, but you leave on a bad note. Joba just struck out the first 2 guys in the inning.

Keep in mind, Banks was at 89 the end of last inning so he will be coming out soon as well. Expect the Yankees to take some pitches this inning.

  592. Girl Friday June 19th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

    v.
    that’s low, really low.

i’m going to have to remember that one .

the big question is can joba reach livan’s average innings per game of 6.1 innings per start?

can you imagine if joba followed him in the yankee rotation?

joba’s fastball would look like a bb.

    v. thanks for reminding me about livan hernandez.

i was reoccupied thinking about brien taylor and what could have been.

  594. Al from BK June 19th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

I think Girardi might have been playing match-up cuz Joba gave up that double last time.

  595. Russell NY June 19th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

  596. Confucius June 19th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

“my father who was going to the stadium back in the 30’s was with me and said taylor was the best he had ever seen as a yankee at any level.”

    randy,

that’s unbelievable. i’m sure your dad saw a lot of good arms in his time. i only saw some video on taylor but you could tell that he had just electric stuff.

i wasn’t a celtic fan and was pretty young when bias died but I remember it very well because it was so shocking. I loved college ball and used to follow the NBA draft really closely. I thought the Celitcs were just going to build a dynasty for years with bias. He was so explosive.

Obviously with bias dying it was completely different. But with both guys the sense of pure waste was hard to get over. That’s what was left – just waste. When I found out about taylor I bias came to my mind as well.

Bias dying was just such an awful situation it kind of became a touchstone for what might have been.

  599. jason June 19th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

I am only watching on Gameday but if Joba was tiring I think this is a good move. Granted he won’t get the win, but an outstanding outing minus the walks. He seemed to be a bit shy in going after the middle of the order. Which incidentally I saw with kennedy too. They seem to have the confidence to get the weaker hitters, but try to be a bit too fine with the heart of the order. But, I will take 1 run, 9 ks and 6 innings every time from Joba.

  600. BBB June 19th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

btw, for the record, I also think it was a wise hook by Girardi. Joba will have plenty more chances to get wins.

  601. Ron June 19th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

This was the kind of AB they wanted Joba to avoid.

  602. al arodien June 19th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

still no win for our rookie starters!

  603. V June 19th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

How is it low? You both are in love with horrible pitchers ;-)

Livan is not a good pitcher. Innings pitched is not a mark of quality. Heck, I could throw 400 innings if absolutely necessary. They might be 15.0 ERA innings, and my arm might fall off, but I could do it, with my 70 mph fastball ;-)

  604. jennifer June 19th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

I hope I don’t regret saying this, but John keeps saying that Tony has GREEEAAAT power. Um last week was his first home run of the season. Doesn’t he realize that this is not the Tony of 4 years ago?

  605. Al from BK June 19th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Girardi manages like a little girl, I can’t stand him last week when Andy was going for the CG and today after Joba embarassed the first 2 hitters.

  606. gayle June 19th, 2008 at 3:03 pm

How come if the Yanks score to go ahead bottom of the inning that Joba cant get the win he pitched 2 of the 3 outs iin the top. isnt it then the scorers call who gets the win or is it becuase he didnt finish the inning that Veras automatically would. Doesnt make much sense to me.

  607. jason June 19th, 2008 at 3:03 pm

What I liked best about Joba’s performance today was the second inning.

    Hear me out.

Most pitchers, they walk the bases loaded with no one out, they consider themselves lucky to get out of the jam with one run and maybe the help of a double play. That’s a good day.

What Joba did today–a young, 22 year old kid–to get out of the inning without surrendering one run, and striking out two?

    That’s grit.

Most pitchers would fold, especially in the second inning.

    Joba didn’t.

If there was any question as to where Joba belongs, he answered it, then and there.

  616. SJ44 June 19th, 2008 at 3:05 pm

    Vrsce,

If I was a betting man, I’d say yes. Not saying its a 100% fact but, I get the feeling both sides will work things out.

Of course, a lot depends on how the rest of the season goes down. However, on the important issues, Hal, Hank and Cash agree more than disagree. That’s a good starting point.

Let me get this straight: If the Yankees score in the bottom of the 6th and then never relinquish that lead, Veras gets the win.

Agreed, Rebecca. Win or no win, Joba showed a lot today as he has every time he’s started. He’s showing he can keep his team in the game even when he isn’t at his sharpest. He still needs to work a bit on putting away leftys but I am very happy with his performance and progress from start to start.

    Randy,

He did. He was having problems controlling it on the outer half to RH hitters.

Overall though, a real solid performance. Walks are still a little high, which ups his pitchcount. Expected with a young pitcher.

But, you really see him getting locked in as a starter. He made some quality pitches at key times today.

Especially in the bases loaded, 0 outs situation.

  634. Al from BK June 19th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

  656. Jorge Steinbrenner, the long-lost third brother June 19th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

Somehow we knew Alex would be making up for lost time. Those numbers are still going to look damn good at the end of the year.

Joba was, again, great today. Even with Rasner, I feel good about our chances to win with our top four right now. This would be something if Wang was around.

Seven games over .500? You’ve got to shake your head sometimes with this team. If only they could play the full 162 AND the playoffs.

  657. John_Halfz June 19th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

Joba wasn’t on a “roll.” He pitched well in the 6th inning, but he was battling and the Padres were sitting. He went to three-ball counts on two good hitters before recovering to strike them out. He’d previously allowed a ground rule double and a walk to Clark. Girardi was right to get someone else in with Chamberlain having thrown 100 pitches for the first time in his career.

    Andrew Brackman draft profile

  661. CB June 19th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

    SJ,

I had read in a few places where the yankees were hopeful that Brackman could throw in Hawaii this winter. But I didn’t want to put much stock in it given how many rumors float around and how the yankees are with injuries.

He comes back and throws in winter ball – that’s just an unbelievably good sign. That would speak volumes for how the organization feels about where he is in his recovery and their expectation for next year.

No way they just send him to Hawaii unless they think he’s medically recovered and will be able to move quickly.

That’s just very good news that they’re even thinking about doing it – they’re not ones to take any chances with young arms as well all know.

And the main point of sending him to Hawaii is to build his arm strength and get him some work. They’d only do that if they’re thinking he’s going to do well next year in minor league competition.

He’s the guy who could send this rotation completely off the charts. Not saying its going to happen. But a rotation with him and Joba in it would be just remarkable.

How many staffs in baseball have 1 pitcher who has 2 75-80 grade pitchers. The yanks would have two.

  663. randy l June 19th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

    sj-

    thanks.

as important as his curve and change up will be as time goes on, having another pitch he can use now to get outs is huge. giving different looks with fastballs is easier to command so he might get really good much faster than if he was having to get command of his curve or change up.

..and he still has the curve and change up.
hitters have no chance of sitting on a pitch with that many pitches.

I’m taking a psychology course this summer, basic psychology, so I wonder if you can teach an old dog new tricks. Lot of posters were down on the Yankees and said they were through. No chance. Lousy team. Others said the opposite give it time they’ll come around. Maybe you can help me with my project. I’m writing about the attitude and fears of baseball fans as part of overall personality traits.

So here’s my question. Do you think it’s possible for people to overcome their fears through experience? If yes then why do the same fans go through the same trauma every year? I’m going to use the Yankees as an example of a team that may have slow starts but has managed to end up on top or close to it for 12 years running. Even when they’ve been at the bottom of the heap or what looks like pretty out of it. Still people freak out the same way every year and then end up being proven wrong. But they still can’t get past it even though they are proven wrong every year.

Maybe this is too tough a topic for a 5-6 page paper. We’re supposed to write something about changing behavior.

    Thanks.

  682. CB June 19th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

“hitters have no chance of sitting on a pitch with that many pitches.”

    randy,

I completely agree with you on the two seamer. It’s not just a different pitch – it’s an entirely different look and allows him to vary his entire approach towards the hitter. He’s already an extreme groundball pitcher, but with that two seamer he can induce double plays and conserve pitches.

Perhaps even more importantly it’ll give him a different weapon to use on days when he might not have his best stuff. That pitch will be a way for him to get easier outs.

The thing that’s exciting about Joba is that he really does have a repertoire of pitches and for a 22 year old kid knows how to use them.

Each game he’s getting better. He didn’t use his 2 seamer as much as he did last game but I think part of that may have just been related to how good his four seamer and slider were today.

He’s still a work in progress – but each start there’s real improvement.

It’ll take time but he’ll learn how to maximize the value of being able to throw 5 pitches which range from above average to dominant.

  683. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

  685. SJ44 June 19th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

    CB,

My nephew faced both Price and Brackman last year. He doubled off Price in his first collegiate AB. He then popped out and flied out.

He had trouble picking up his slider. Really thought it was a quality pitch. His fastball? Fast with late movement.

He was really impressed with Price.

    Brackman?

First time up, here was sequence: 99 MPH fastball on the outer half. Then, a 96 MPH fastball up that he swung through to go 0-2. Next pitch was a curveball in the dirt he swung through for strike 3.

Told me after the game he didn’t even see the curveball out of his hand. Walked the next time up and then reached on an error.

He’s caught Price on a summer league team a couple of years ago. Said his improvement was off the charts from that time.

Brackman? To this day, he said he was the toughest pitcher he faced in his college career. Besides Price, he faced Chris Hernandez of UM (a future first round pick), Ryan Perry from AZ (the Tigers first round pick), and Alex White from UNC, who could be the first pick in the ’09 Draft.

  703. CB June 19th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

    SJ,

Great reports from your nephew. If he’s healthy his stuff is just off the charts.

How much did your nephew feel like Brackman’s height was a factor in making his stuff so good? Was it Brackman’s ridiculous release point that made the curve so difficult to pick up? Did he feel like the ball was exploding on him because of Brackman’s long stride/ arms?

Did he find him herky jerky at all or uncoordinated due to his size?

I particularly ask that because Perry throws technically with the same velocity as Brackman does but I’d guess the experience of facing both pitcher’s fastballs was entirely different.

” my arm might fall off, but I could do it, with my 70 mph fastball ”
    v.

first of all you can’t throw 70

mph unless you’re dropping it off the empire state building.

to take the argument to an absurd situation to make the point, think what would happen if a team had a pitcher who pitch every inning of every game and that pitcher had and era of 6.00 .

don’t you think that having 11 other roster spots open on the team might have an impact on the offense?

or the opposite situation where you had 12 pitchers who had a 1.00 era but could only give you 80 innings each. who pitches the other 500 hunderd innings?

when some of the 12 extend themselves past a certain point to fill that 500 innings, they will not be the same pitcher.

these are absurd situations that will never happen , but the point is innings matter.

if a team is filled with starters who can go deep into starts, relief pitchers can remain unexposed.

maybe an extra offensive player can be added. having to many rookie starters who are on an innings restriction or pitchers who are fragile for any reason is a real problem.

you have to admit , the twins don’t use as many relief pitchers on average in a game livan hernandez pitches as the yankees do when a rookie is pitching for them.

over time this makes the twins bullpen better than the yankee bullpen if all things were equal to start.

Wang, Joba, Brackman, Betances, Hughes, Cole, Garcia, Inoa (please be the baseball deities) – and those are only the potential 1-2 starters for the Yankees in the next couple of years.

  717. VT Yankeefan June 19th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

JRVJ: Problem is, if we can find out who the nephew is, we break the blog’s cardinal rule and find out who SJ is!

  734. SJ44 June 19th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

    CB,

Its the advantage of having a nephew who is a catcher! lol

His size was a lot in the assessment. He told me it felt like he was on top of him when he released the pitch.

On the breaking ball, he had a tougher time reading the release point and the ball acted as if it was a slider because he threw it so hard.

After the game, he asked him if it was a slider and he said, “No, that was my curveball”. It was nasty.

They will clean up his delivery a little bit in Tampa. Overall though, his mechanics are pretty solid for such a big guy.

I think his basketball background helps him because his footwork and mechanics allow him to stay back on his delivery more than Randy Johnson did at the same age.

I saw Randy Johnson when he was in the Expos minor league system and he was all over the place with his delivery. He had amazing stuff but, couldn’t repeat his delivery.

Once he cleaned it up, he became Randy Johnson.

With Brackman, he’s light on pitching experience but, his mechanics and stuff are really off the charts.

  735. mark June 19th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Rebecca thanks. Maybe the point is the deeper the fear the harder it is to get past it? Since yours is thunderstorms it doesn’t have to be tied to “meaningfulness” of the experience. Someone in class going through a divorce said her husband didn’t care enough to change. Someone else said maybe the changes were so hard for him he couldn’t do them.

If anyone here wants to give comments I would appreciate it. If you find you are negative about the Yankees every year are you also negative in general? If you are negative every year and then the Yankees find a way to get the job done every year do you know why you can’t let that guide how you feel when the same thing happens?

Sorry to do this while a game is going on. I will check back after the game in case someone wants to answer later.

    Thanks.

    mark

  739. Ron June 19th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

Well, I mean, Girardi could have switched the use of Farnworth and Veras. But I don’t trust Farnsworth to throw in two innings. I mean, who else can he use? I love Ross’s potential, but this is not a spot for him.

  742. CB June 19th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

Veras’s really has terrific stuff. Hitters are only hitting .213 off of him with a measly .292 slugging percentage. WHIP of 1.02. Striking out over 9/ 9innings. He’s given up 15 hits in 21 innings. That is terrific.

He’s walked 7 in 21 innings this year. That’s actually not a bad rate. But he seems to cluster his walks together and get himself into trouble at times. But he’s generally worked out of the trouble he’s gotten into this year.

The Yankees pitchers have more swinging strikes and Ks today than Mussina has gotten in three years. Power arms = missing bats = good things will happen.

Good starting pitching is how to solve bullpen problems.

  844. kidjock June 19th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Oh, I forgot, this is the NL. carry on

  849. Fredo Corleone June 19th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

    Good job by Farnsworth.

Bush no hitter over. Overbay tripled.

  850. BBB June 19th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

MUCH smarter than me, Joe Girardi is.

    The job done, Farnsworth got!

  851. mark June 19th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Didn’t Farnsworth have his own cheerleader here? Farns making that dude look like a genius.

  852. Moe June 19th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Dave Bush blew it. too bad. y is it that all players perform well against thier former teams?

  853. DMan June 19th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

    Ouch. Lose’s the no-no on a triple.

Well, at least it wasn’t a cheap it.

  854. kd June 19th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

    Nick,

Go Bears!! Maybe one day we’ll get that athletic facility so we can get usc’s recruits.

I really have to get direct tv, comcast is worthless.

Will Farnsworth ever have higher trade value than now?

  855. SJ44 June 19th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Thankfully, today was the “Good Kyle”.

You say, “thank you” and move on.

You know when to ask about Robertson and Melancon? When they are put on the 40 man roster.

Until then, they aren’t coming to NY. If Pete asked the question, Cashman would just give a stock (“not yet”) answer.

You will know its getting close when they are put on the 40 man.

  856. SamVA June 19th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

    hey Michael T.
no offense bro.. but you just insulted our most consistent pitcher and our leader in the w column… and he does strike people out…. its just little league fastball speed (changeup)

  857. goyanks June 19th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

how come it got really quiet with the farnsworth talk all of a sudden?

  860. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Insurance runs, the Yankees do not like to get.

  861. Ron June 19th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Farnsworth has been bad enough that we’ll be doing that until the end of the season. And he’ll continue to justify it with a stinker every fourth outing and his thrill-a-minute pitching style every single outing.

  862. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

By the way, Portugal is about to break my heart.

  863. Jeter's Future Wife June 19th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

ok, one more inning for another sweep! even if it is against the Padres!

  864. Jeter's Future Wife June 19th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

wonder how the Cubs liked getting a taste of the Rays! sure brought them down a few pegs off the ego pole.

  865. Nick in SF June 19th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

goyanks, there is virtually no confidence in Farnsworth on the LuHud comments section. That doesn’t mean anyone is rooting for him to fail. He makes us nervous, and deservedly so. His appearances are traumatic events, regardless of the outcome. If they end well, as that one did, many of us try to forget the pain we just endured and move on.

  866. Brent (This Damon Guy's For Real, Huh?) June 19th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

For me to regain my trust in Farnsworth (and I mean saying “phew, Farnsworth is coming in”), he would have to get 1-2-3 innings until his contract is up. Call me pessimistic, but I just don’t see that happening.

  867. PJH June 19th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

These umps are squeezing Mo every game.

  897. Brent (This Damon Guy's For Real, Huh?) June 19th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

    2 NL series, 2 sweeps :)

how many more can we have ?

Thank You Sir, May I Have Another?

  898. Laura June 19th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

It’s too bad we can’t play all our games against the NL. I really think we’d go 150-12.

  899. Ron June 19th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

So why exactly are we playing the Padres anyway? This year the Yankees are facing the NL Central in interleague, no? Why the NL West team?

  900. raymagnetic ®™ June 19th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

I’m not saying I want Bronson Arroyo, but he really isn’t as bad as people think.

In two years with Boston he pitched:

    178IP’s with a 121 ERA+
    200+ IP”s with a 100 ERA+ (league average)

He’s having a horrible year this year but he wasn’t terrible at all in the AL.

Sign me up for 170+ league average innings from a pitcher not making an insane amount of money any day.

He also has a lifetime ERA+ of 107. He’s really not that bad.

  901. goyanks June 19th, 2008 at 4:25 pm

banks, welcome to the bronx…pitch the game of ur life and all you come up with is a loss

  902. E June 19th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

another time when mo struck out the side..seriously how many times has he done it this season. He keeps getting swings and misses. seriously mo for cy young

  903. BBB June 19th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

I’m not sure I have ever admired anyone in my life as much as I admire Mariano Rivera. What an absolute delight it is to watch him dominate like this. There are no words. I love you MO!!!

  904. PJH June 19th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

    Cincinnati-3
    Pittsburgh-3
    Mets-4
    Rangers-4

There is no reason we cant go 12-2 or 11-3 over this stretch.

  905. Al from BK June 19th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Wow Mo is filthy but unfortunately he now needs a game off.

  906. Jerkface June 19th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Randy made a point earlier that Joba needs to ‘start pitchin like Livan(going 6 innings?)’ , if Livan were pitching we lose this game.

Absolute dominance by our pitching this series.

They struck out 50% of batters faced

  907. Al from BK June 19th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

I am conservative I say that the Yanks would go 140-22 in the NL.

  908. Motown Yankees Fan June 19th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

We really are so lucky we get to watch Mo do what he does for our team. Mo and Alex are such terrific baseball players. I love watching them.

  909. Fredo Corleone June 19th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

These are games they should be winning. Now they’re doing it. Better keep it up too, because Boston probably won’t do worse than 5-1 with the Cards and D’backs visiting Fenway. Good opportunity to close the gap with the Rays though, who play the Marlins who are pretty tough at home.

  911. Don Vito A. Bellamo June 19th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

    MO ROCKS !

  912. Jorge Steinbrenner, the long-lost third brother June 19th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Kyle Farnsworth was brought here to be what Tom Gordon was for us, and what Mo was in ’96 for us, which is a closer-caliber guy in the 8th inning. He was given closer money. He hasn’t even come close to doing the job in three seasons. Therefore, there’s no reason to have confidence in him.

Let’s not let that cloud another awesome victory for the Yanks. Seven over .500? I really like that.

  913. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 19th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Okay, Bob Lorenz, I get to call him Farnsy. You, uh, don’t.

  914. CB June 19th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, especially with the Reds. They have very good starting pitching and Volquez has been hands down the best pitcher in baseball this year.

The yanks are playing better but they’re still having trouble scoring runs in games they don’t hit home runs in. They also have no idea what they are going to get out of Giese or who is going to pitch the other game of the double header.

Between facing Volquez and that double header they could definitely take a couple of steps back.

  915. Alan June 19th, 2008 at 4:33 pm

C’mon Cubbies, beat the Rays tonight to salvage a game. The Yankees gotta gain some ground on somebody.

  916. Amar June 19th, 2008 at 4:33 pm

PJH sweeping Cincy won’t be easy with Volquez on the mound. Mets just took 2 of 3 from LAA, plus they always get up to play us, especially at Shea. Texas is a solid team, and Pittsburgh aint as bad as they usually are. Those teams are definitely not pushovers.

  919. Dee June 19th, 2008 at 4:44 pm

“LOL at Jeter throwing his gum at Melky then Melky kicking it.”

It’s a ritual, they do that every time they win a game.

A quick glance at the comments here looks like it was a fun game, can’t wait to watch it tonight. So no Trevor Hoffman, I’m glad Padres didn’t get to use him this series but would have been nice to see the Hoffman vs. Mo match-up. That would be insane.

Looking forward to Moose and his win #11 tomorrow. Gotta say, finally got to see Cy Peavy last night, Brandon Webb at Shea last week and also Santana from the last subway series game, it’s only one-game sample per I know, but these NL “aces” didn’t impress me at all. Even with Wang out, I’m still optimistic about our rotation especially with Mo, Andy and Joba so dialed in now. I hope Cashman doesn’t go out to do anything rash the next few weeks.

  920. Drew June 19th, 2008 at 7:19 pm

Went to our first game of the year today. Great game, great weather!
