Dan Giese was just on wfan. Sounded like a really nice guy. Type of guy you’d love to root for. Hopefully he continues to do well!

  2. YanksAngel June 22nd, 2008 at 10:03 am

Time for Andy to play the role of stopper again.

I’m not in NY, so for anyone who is, what’s the weather like? Any chance of a rain delay? Trying to decide whether I want to stay up and watch or catch the archive.

  3. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 22nd, 2008 at 10:05 am

hmmm my first post didn’t show up.

Dan Giese was just on the radio. Sounded like a really nice guy, the kind you want to root for.

  4. Matt June 22nd, 2008 at 10:39 am

Bench Cano, I will not forgive him for swinging at the first pitch yesterday with the bases loaded and popping out to the catcher.

This guy is out to lunch 24/7.

  5. Fran June 22nd, 2008 at 10:47 am

Hope that the Yankee bats show up today. They need to take at least one from Cincinnati.

Could really use a Yankee win today. At least I’m not going to the game though, so they have a reasonable shot!

  8. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 22nd, 2008 at 11:13 am

Well it is raining at the moment, light rain, i’d think they’d play through it since it is the only time the Reds come in.

  9. Glenn June 22nd, 2008 at 11:16 am

I suggest that you’re not any kind of curse Rebecca, just a victim of bad timing.
What goes around comes around still applies.

    Angel-

It’s overcast and windy right now.. rain is expected later today, but they should (i hope) get the game in without delay.

  11. JC - These Yankees are making me thirsty! June 22nd, 2008 at 11:33 am

Come on bats – lets get it going for all the guys like me, down under staying up until the small hours.

I’m predicting 7 strong innings from Andy and the bottom half to deliver… ever the optimist!

  12. YanksAngel June 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 am

    Thanks Jennifer

    JC where are you?

  15. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 22nd, 2008 at 11:38 am

No longer raining, I think you should be okay. There might be a shower coming through during the game, but they’ll still play.

Bobby also hasn’t hit too much since he hit the Twins pitcher in the head.

    JC,

if you’re feeling a bit energetic, there are a couple of decent baseball clubs around Sydney and the Sydney suburbs. During my student days in Melbourne, we used to spend many weekends duking it out with SydneyUni. It’s not quite the major leagues, but some decent competition.

  20. BBP June 22nd, 2008 at 11:47 am

I would recommend the lineup could be like this

    1.Damon(L)-(.327/.395/.486)
    2.Posada(SW)-(.303/.389/.489)
    3.Matsui(L)-(.324/.406/.462)
    4.Rodriguez(R)-(.333/.413/.463)
    5.Giambi(L)-(.260/.394/.564)
    6.Jeter(R)-(.278/.333/.379)
    7.Abreu(L)-(.270/.333/.432)
    8.Cabrera(SW)-(.253/.312/.372)
    9.Cano(L)-(.229/.273/.327)

We need RISP and we need more scores.

“Johnny Cueto has never faced any of the New York hitters”
Should read , None of the New York hitters have faced Johnny Cueto, and that spells trouble for the Yankees!
They would be better off facing the Santanas, Peavy’s, Webbs, Sabathia’s, etc than these pitchers they’ve never seen. What is it with this fact?

Yankees have forgotten how to sacrifice runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Thinking all the time hit the ball hard and hope it’s a homer! When they were successful in 96, they played a NL brand of baseball.

Now we see Mussina pitching effectively, Giambi doing better, Farnsworth improving and what worries me here is that the Yankees will resign these players, when their bloated contracts are done this fall!

I’d like to be optimistic, but if they’re lucky to make the playoffs, I don’t see them advancing to the World Series.

  22. JC - These Yankees are making me thirsty! June 22nd, 2008 at 11:50 am

    Marvellous work Zach

I appreciate that but I’m almost fully converted into the Australian sporting lifestyle now… i.e. I’ve given up every other sport in favour of Golf and late starts to the working day!

    Thanks again

Im running out of patience with melky.. i really wanna see what gardner can do

  24. Yankee Trader June 22nd, 2008 at 11:51 am

BBP-Why not try that lineup. Girardi has tried new lineups until lately almost every day!

  25. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 22nd, 2008 at 11:53 am

Oh shush. Last year we lost two games to the Giants and got swept by the Rockies and still made the playofffs.

    Thundering here.

  26. V June 22nd, 2008 at 11:54 am

“Bench Cano, I will not forgive him for swinging at the first pitch yesterday with the bases loaded and popping out to the catcher.

This guy is out to lunch 24/7.”

Yes, bench Cano, he of the .364/.417/.455 line in his last 7 games (including his 0/4 yesterday). WHAT A BUM!

(sarcasm) I think they should DFA Abreu and bring up Brett Gardner to play RF, that’s what the Yankees need.

  27. YanksAngel June 22nd, 2008 at 11:54 am

JC – I’m in Melbourne, well just outside of Melbourne. Been here for 6 years. I grew up in Alabama, in the same town Robert Horry is from, but my husband was born here and we moved here to be closer to his family. That goodness for MLB.TV because they sure don’t show enough basbeball games on TV here.

  28. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 11:56 am

“Yankees have forgotten how to sacrifice runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Thinking all the time hit the ball hard and hope it’s a homer! When they were successful in 96, they played a NL brand of baseball.”

Thinking “hit the ball hard” is exactly what they should be doing. Sacrifice bunts are stupid unless you’re playing for one run very late in the game and have a poor hitter at the plate.

  29. Zach in Port Jeff June 22nd, 2008 at 11:57 am

“I appreciate that but I’m almost fully converted into the Australian sporting lifestyle now… i.e. I’ve given up every other sport in favour of Golf and late starts to the working day!”

Aaaaahhhh…Nothing like waking up at midday and watching some local domestic cricket on Channel 9. Before you know it, its 7 hours later, you’re drunk on the couch, and there is an advertisement on television with some dude screaming at you to come down to the Sydney Exhibition Centre to buy some carpets.

    good times!

  30. Yankee Trader June 22nd, 2008 at 11:58 am

Sacrifice bunts are not stupid, when your team sucks at delivering with RISP!

  31. V June 22nd, 2008 at 11:58 am

“Yankees have forgotten how to sacrifice runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Thinking all the time hit the ball hard and hope it’s a homer! When they were successful in 96, they played a NL brand of baseball.”

The 1996 Yankees had 41 sacrifice hits in 162 games. That’s hardly a lot.

In a close game? Yeah, it has its place, but wasting outs is usually a bad idea.

That National League style of play is largely due to the pitcher’s spot being a black hole.

  32. V June 22nd, 2008 at 12:01 pm

“Sacrifice bunts are not stupid, when your team sucks at delivering with RISP!”

How does wasting a chance to hit with RISP (man on 2nd) by giving up an out to get another chance to hit with RISP supposed to improve your hitting with RISP?

  33. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 12:03 pm

“How does wasting a chance to hit with RISP (man on 2nd) by giving up an out to get another chance to hit with RISP supposed to improve your hitting with RISP?”

it has been pointed out by some of our knowledgeable posters that brian cashman has changed the latin american scouting situation since he took over full control of the team, but i have to say i notice quite a difference in the three cincy starters from our young starters.

the red have started three young pitchers of color in a row( with thompson being from maryland). even given the time it takes to turn around the system, is cashman focusing to much on southern cal, fla, and texas .

i’m not making a racial point here, but a point of where scouting is being focused.

is damon oppenheimer, being a so cal product, focusing too much on that area?

is he ( even though it’s said to be better since cashman too over) focusing enough on latin america for starting pitchers?

i say this because cano, melky, tabata, and montero are offensive players we know of. montero was signed for two million. why no starters? has this kind of money been spent on starting pitchers in latin america?

something seems askew to me that simply saying it takes time to develop 16 year olds doesn’t explain. we hear of tabata and montero.

we’re not hearing of any equivalent latin american starting pitchingin the yankee system.

maybe it’s just an anomaly or maybe the yankees aren’t doing a good job in latin america scouting starting pitchers.

if cincinnati can do it surely the yankees can.

Okay V and Whozat- You’ve convinced me. Does someone know where we rank in the AL with RISP and 0 outs, 1 out, two outs?

  37. Zach in Port Jeff June 22nd, 2008 at 12:10 pm

    YanksAngel,

you have to make sure you adequately supplied to enough cheap local beer to make it through an entire game…Victoria Bitter wont do. You have to go cheaper. I’m talking Melbourne Bitter. The combination of a 12 pack of Melbourne Bitter and a blazing hot 40 degree day always did the trick for me.

ps…what part of Melbourne are you in? I work for a firm based out of Fitzroy, but based in New York now, so I only get to pop into Melbourne a few times a year nowadays. Just enough time to get my fix of good coffee.

  38. bru June 22nd, 2008 at 12:13 pm

trade kennedy, cano, melky and 2 prospects for sabathia and grady sizemore.next year they could have sabathia, wang, joba 1,2,3 with hughes, sanchez, mcutchen, horne, aceves, pettitte, moose and brackman possibly at the end of 2009 or in 2010.gardner 4th outfielder or ajax, get a real first baseman or move posada there or montero.

anyone know who the yanks are going to pitch on the Friday afternoon game at home against the Mets ?

  40. randy l June 22nd, 2008 at 12:17 pm

” Sacrifice bunts are stupid unless you’re playing for one run very late in the game and have a poor hitter at the plate.”

sacrifice bunts are really stupid when the hitter can’t bunt well, and that is almost everyone on the yankees.

the twins can use the sacrifice bunt more often because everyone in the organization learns how to bunt. if the yankees don’t teach it in the system, how is the manager supposed to use it?

  47. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 12:27 pm

“if cincinnati can do it surely the yankees can.”

Cincy didn’t scout and sign Volquez. Thompson was, as you admitted, an American draft pick. There’s a lot more white kids in America that play baseball than any other ethnic group. So…when you go to draft the best available talent when your turn comes up…it’ll probably be a white kid.

They missed on king felix in 04. They changed their approach after that. None of those kids have gotten past A ball yet. Because, mostly, they were 16 or 17 when drafted. There’s not some systematic ignorance of Latin American players or other players of color. Most 18 year olds NEVER make the bigs, especially pitchers. Trying to prod any meaning out of the fact that the Yanks don’t, currently, have any super-promising black or latino starting pitchers in AAA or the bigs is just pointless when they only really committed to Latin American scouting 3 or 4 years ago.

Jairo Heredia, real young latin american kid in A ball. Chris Garcia is another minority pitcher with great stuff—but he just can’t stay healthy and has work ethic problems.

  48. Ryan June 22nd, 2008 at 12:28 pm

Randy, go back two posts and I think you’ll find your latin american pitcher that everyone is fawning over.

  49. mikethemike June 22nd, 2008 at 12:29 pm

ok thanks for the info on the friday day game starter

  50. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 12:30 pm

“They missed on king felix in 04. ”

And it’s not that they didn’t know about him; they did. They just didn’t put in the time/money to convince him to sign with them. I mean, these kids get to choose. You can’t underestimate how important finding them early and building a personal connection with them is. Having only recommitted to doing this sort of thing 3-4 years ago, it is unsurprising that no MLB or AAA level fruit has yet been borne.

  51. SJ44 June 22nd, 2008 at 12:30 pm

Not hitting with RISP is not a Cano or Cabrera problem. Its been a teamwide problem all season.

Abreu is slumping. Giambi is hitting under .200 with RISP. Jeter is hitting under .200 with RISP since Cabrera smashed his hand with a pitch.

The only guys in the lineup hitting with RISP are Damon and Arod.

Unfortunately the Yankees, like every team in MLB, don’t have enough players in AAA to replace guys who are slumping.

Brett Gardner? He just ended a 3-40 slump with 3 hits last night. I hardly think his cold bat is an upgrade over Cabrera’s at this time.

Like all veteran teams, you have to hit your way out of your slumps. Its the only option the Yankees have at this time.

    Randy,

The Yankees have spent a ton of money the last few years in Latin America. Not just on pitching but, also with position players.

Those results won’t be known for at least 2-3 more years because most of the kids signed were between the ages of 15-17 years old.

  52. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 12:31 pm

“Randy, go back two posts and I think you’ll find your latin american pitcher that everyone is fawning over.”

Aceves is a mexican league vet with great pitchability and middling stuff. He’s not the kind of guy Randy’s talking about.

  53. michael June 22nd, 2008 at 12:32 pm

why people come down on giambi as “not a real first basemen” is beyond me. he’s in the top two most productive first baseman in the league. leave your biases behind!

  57. Bring Gardner Up June 22nd, 2008 at 12:38 pm

I think its almost time to make a move for CC. Dont wanna wait too long or he will be gone, or the price will go up. He is starting to look like a CY Young again, and we could really use him down the stretch. Not to mention they wouldnt want Hughes since he will be sitting until August. Hes a half year rental which means they wont ask for too much. We really dont need Rasner anymore, Its Giese’ turn to give the rotation a try. Not that a trade if it happened would happen before the deadline.

    Bring Gardner up

  58. David June 22nd, 2008 at 12:39 pm

You know what I hate about the Yankees losing? The sofa scouts who come out and post because they KNOW what to do. Not SJ44 or CB, and there are a few good posters here. But some idiot just suggested trading Cano, Mely, and two or three prospects for Sabathia and Sizemore. Okay, maybe that’s not crazy, but here is what is. He actually thinks Brackman could be in the rotation next year.

    Heaven almighty.

This is what is terrible about the internet. it allows everyone to know the names of minor league players and suddenly everyone knows that they would be a better GM because they KNOW that a pitcher who just had TJ surgery and was just drafted last year could be ready to go and contribute in the major leagues NEXT year.

Is there a way to ignore all posters except SJ$$, CB and a few others so I don’t have to read through all the crap?

  59. SJ44 June 22nd, 2008 at 12:39 pm

CC isn’t on the trade market at this time.

Can’t make a move on a player that isn’t available.

  60. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2008 at 12:39 pm

I think randy is talking about really young future innings eaters — like Livan Hernandez.

  61. BX. 12 Fordham Road June 22nd, 2008 at 12:41 pm

David….you have to learn to appreciate the comedic content provided by people like that…..perhaps Cole will br ready next year as well to join Brackman…after all he pitched really well as a HS Senior….

  62. David June 22nd, 2008 at 12:42 pm

    BX.

I never thought about that. Cole will be totally ready to go and Bleich, hell he could start next week, right?

Honestly, I do love your insight. Thanks.

  65. Fran June 22nd, 2008 at 12:45 pm

On the pregame show they just said that Geise will pitch the first game on Friday. The starter for Game 2 is up in the air – Girardi said he and Cashman will discuss it this week. Sone of the options are Ponson, Alan Horne and Kei Igawa.

    Pettitte will pitch on Saturday.

It was also raining at tbe Stadium.

  66. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 12:47 pm

“Is there a way to ignore all posters except SJ$$, CB and a few others so I don’t have to read through all the crap?”

What I do is read the poster’s name, and then just keep going if it’s a troll :-)

There isn’t, no. It’d probably be pretty easy to put together a greasemonkey script to do a blacklisting kind of thing, but I’m supposed to be writing, not coding :-)

  67. stuart June 22nd, 2008 at 12:49 pm

I love that people get on the $460k a yr Melky for a slump hitting 9th but let Abreu at $16 mill hitting third slide.

Melky is 24, a good not great player… I just do not understand the stupidity….

the guy’s that make the big $$$$$$$$$$$ are suppose to produce more, get it???????????????????

  68. David June 22nd, 2008 at 12:49 pm

Thanks Whozat. I normally do that, but when there’s 900-1000 posts it takes so long! haha

I’m going to the game Sat at Shea. Will be my 2nd time seeing pettitte this year. Saw his first start of the year vs the Rays.

Was at Shea last year when Rasner got hurt. Saw Rasner pitch a gem against the Royals couple weeks ago. No run support, but you all know that. Good to see him back and doing well.

I got really excited about Giese yesterday. If he keeps that up, they don’t need a trade.

  69. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2008 at 12:49 pm

Yes, now that Stanfurd has been bounced from the CWS, Bleich should be available to pitch in the double-header. Don’t be skeptical, he’s a better option than Ponson.

  70. stuart June 22nd, 2008 at 12:51 pm

2 plays that have hurt this weekend a ton are. Friday the Damon in the lights play;; really 3 unearned runs and the Giese play yesterday..

when you are not hitting every mistake comes back to haunt you…..

they need to hit with RISP, 13th in the league in RISP..Terrible………..

  71. David June 22nd, 2008 at 12:51 pm

    No Stuart, you’re wrong.

Guys who just got a big contract at 2B, yet fail to make the routine plays because he gets lazy and fails to produce at the plate because he has no discipline. Guys like that get the pass because “he’s going to come out of it”.

Melky, he sucks at the plate because we’re paying him so little. Maybe if we paid him more he wouldn’t suck so much, just “slump” and he’d come out of it. (Sarcasm)

  72. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 22nd, 2008 at 12:52 pm

You know, if you look at other teams’ RISP numbers, the Yankees aren’t that horrible.

  73. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 12:54 pm

“Melky is 24, a good not great player”

That’s the thing…he’s NOT necessarily good. He’s well below average offensively, and his D brings his contribution up to a tad below average overall.

Abreu, also doing poorly right now. However, there’s reason to believe that he will return to his normal form. It’s not like he’s striking out all the time or anything. His peripherals are ok. But yes, he’s slumping. Melky, on the other hand, is looking horrendous at the plate all the time. And does not have the track record to indicate that there’s reason to believe he’ll pull out of it. He’s young, yes…but he needs to show signs of snapping out of it. He’s a black hole in this lineup, and he’s not so stellar on D that he’s still a net positive.

  74. mel June 22nd, 2008 at 12:55 pm

That’s because we watch every at-bat of every Yankee game. :)

“The Yankees have spent a ton of money the last few years in Latin America. Not just on pitching but, also with position players.
Those results won’t be known for at least 2-3 more years because most of the kids signed were between the ages of 15-17 years old.”

    sj-

my question is then why do we hear of tabata and montero, but not of any equivalent starters? they were signed at a young age, yet we hear of them. now maybe it’s simply because it’s such a small sample that a starter hasn’t emerged as a prospect.

if they are on the way great, but the sooner that we start hearing of them the better.
being a yankee fan growing up in the 50′s i have high standards. if the yankees are going to be focusing on developing their own players they should strive to be the best in every area in the world at finding players.

so far from what i can see , the same results are not visible in latin america for starting pitching as it is for offensive players like tabata and montero. but like you said it may be on the way.

i’m just always skeptical of being told something is coming a few years down the road.

“Guys who just got a big contract at 2B, yet fail to make the routine plays because he gets lazy”

That’s selective memory. He’s actually been REALLY good on defense all season. He’s got a whopping six errors. Sure, he botched that toss the other day, but in general, he’s been really good on defense.

Also, again…Cano HAS shown long stretches in which he’s been an incredible hitter. Large swaths of the season. Melky has put together a couple of solid stretches in his career, but he’s gotten worse each season.

    Any idea where he is?

Try milb.com for all the minor leaguers. Suttle was at Hawaii Winter League last year. Took forever to get his first hit, but finished strong. Saw on one of the minor league sites that he was doing okay.

Brandon (whenever you get here): hear anything lately from Inoa’s camp?

Last I heard was on Wedensday night he still hopes that NY makes the best offer. The decision lies on the hands of Mark Newman, Brian Cashman and Carlos Rios. Show him the money he signs don’t and you may see Billy Beane or Brian Sabean or worse Omar Minaya steal a talented kid.

no – I understand that Suttle is years away. The writing at the time of the draft was that once we picked suttle he became the best infield prospect in the organization (per baseball america.com)

I went to UT and I hadn’t heard anything about Brad since he was picked last year.

  103. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 22nd, 2008 at 1:22 pm

A circle change can also be used to provide screwball-type movement but without the stress placed on the arm by a traditional screwball.

Hope that answers your question, and it’s the pitch Alex just struck out on.

I think that’s more an indictment of the Yankee IF prospects than anything else :-/

I wouldn’t mind if they used some of the pitching depth to acquire some more interesting middle IF prospects. Problem is that you rarely see prospect-for-prospect deals. They’d have to send a guy with some MLB experience.

  109. mrthrow June 22nd, 2008 at 1:25 pm

    Take your index and thumb
    Make an “ok”
Place “o” in ok on outside of ball
    Wrap remaining fingers around ball
Throw with same velocity as a fastball, and same arm slot

“I wouldn’t mind if they used some of the pitching depth to acquire some more interesting middle IF prospects.”

It has to be a little depressing if you are an infielder in the yankee farm system (especially on the left side of the diamond) b/c you know the big club is tied-in to Jete and A-Rod for the next several years.

I agree that the next natural step for the yanks is to start to build up the offensive pipeline with prospects just like they seem to have done a great job building a quality large batch of arms (more lefties please!!!)

  117. SJ44 June 22nd, 2008 at 1:31 pm

    Randy,

You hear of Montero and Tabata because they are in A and AA respectively.

You don’t hear of the others because they are in the Dominican League and the Gulf Coast League.

Not a lot of people are writing about basically high school kids (in age and maturation levels) that are playing in short season leagues.

Once those kids make their way to A ball you will hear more about them.

Two outfielders to keep an eye on who are in the Dominican League right now:

Kelvin DeLeon, 17, 6-2, 180. RH hitter. He was the crown jewel of all of the undrafted Latin American free agents last year. So far, he hasn’t disappointed. Really good OF and his bat is more advanced than other kids his age.

I expect him to have a great chance to be in the GCL or perhaps even Charleston next year.

Eduardo Sosa, 17, 5-11, 155. LH hitter. More of a leadoff type of kid with great speed. Has some pop with the bat but, his ceiling may be more of a leadoff nature as he matures. Very athletic kid.

Not a ballyhooed signing. However, scouts I know who have seen him think he has a lot of potential.

Obviously with all these kids, its viewing their futures with a long term lens. However, as you know, its all about stockpiling talent. Whoever young they are.

The more you stockpile, the more options you have down the road.

  118. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 22nd, 2008 at 1:31 pm

Really didn’t need a demonstration of how it works by seeing Alex strikeout on it!

I know me neither, but that’s been Alex’s kyrptonite his whole career, he’s a fastball masher but mix in that change up or slider or curveball and throw it out the zone and you get him. It’s IMO what’s kept him sucky in the post season and it’s been what has him a career .307 hitter instead of .340, I seriously believe if he could hit the off speed more consistant he’d be a .380 – 390 hitter this season but some things just can’t be taught. Wade Boggs struggled w/ that pitch he learned to just poke it over the infield and teams then sticked w/ the fastball vs him. I would hope Alex conquers this one day. :?

He’s a good guesser Whozat, but mix in that offspeed out of his zone and he chases it. I know even I wonder about it, how could he, because he’s that talented a pitch outside the zone he can drive farther than most people.

Why? Did he used to be an outfielder as well? Cueto never walked many, which is De La Rosa’s bugaboo, so that’s not too similar…

  172. Laura June 22nd, 2008 at 1:57 pm

Yesterday was awful. The day before…He’s really good. And Cueto can be nasty as well. Still…

  174. Eric June 22nd, 2008 at 1:58 pm

We can’t hit against good pitching. We can feast on the Wandy Rodriguez’s of the world. I’m shocked we beat Peavy and Oswalt at this point.

SoS we’re catching Cueto at a bad time he basically shut down the Dodgers in his last start now he’s primed to do the same today to the Yanks, we can’t afford any mistakes today, we need to make him blink, get a runner on 1B or in scoring position. It’s funny Cueto and Volquez may be the 2 most electric pitchers in the NL when they are on.

  176. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Rebecca, I’m not sure about the chicken, but have you considered dropping the Bronx from your summer itinerary and heading back to Italy?

  177. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 1:59 pm

This offense is brutal too, currently.

  178. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 22nd, 2008 at 1:59 pm

    Volquez is unreal.

Cueto can be unreal, but today he looks a little wild.

The guy yesterday? We had the bases loaded and forgot that the baserunners only count when they actually, you know, score a run.

  179. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 1:59 pm

“We can’t hit against good pitching.”

Um…if people could hit them, they wouldn’t be good pitchers.

speaking of talent, your nephew is playing in orleans on tuesday and sunday so hopefully i’ll catch one of the games. i notice he’s walked 5 times in 6 games to give him a .500 OBP. not too shabby.

I know what the problem is!! Girardi has stopped changing the lineup on a daily basis. The team was always on their toes. Now their back on their heels. Time to do what you do best Girardi. Keep playing musical chairs. 96 team did and it worked.

  194. rconn23 June 22nd, 2008 at 2:04 pm

    Can breath again now.

Shaky inning by Andy. Lots of pitches too.

  227. CB June 22nd, 2008 at 2:14 pm

The feast or famine offense continues. This team looks very good and scores a lot of runs when they hit home runs. Otherwise they just don’t string together enough hits (especially with RISP) to have big innings.

Chances are they are going to need to hit some home runs to beat Cueto. Not only is that the strength of the yankee’s offense it’s been Cueto’s major weakness.

Its hard to believe as Cueto has such good stuff but he is one of the most home run prone pitchers in all of baseball. He’s giving up 1.85 HR/9 innings. That is an absolutely awful rate. He’s already given up 18 home runs this season.

You’d think those home runs would be due to the fact that he plays in a very small park in which home runs are easy to hit. But that’s not really a primary factor. His home run rate is actually much worse on the road – 2.17/9 on the road and 1.7/9 at home. In turn his ERA on the road is much worse than at home 7.28 on the road and 4.11 at home.

Cueto can look very good for long stretches and then give up a lot of runs quickly through the long ball. Let’s hope that where this game is headed.

  228. Eric June 22nd, 2008 at 2:14 pm

“Tons of pitchers have great stuff or they wouldn’t be major league pitchers.”

There is a huge difference between great stuff guys like Volquez and regular big league pitchers. If you don’t think that you are probably real happy with Rasner and Giese and wouldn’t want an improvement.

  229. V June 22nd, 2008 at 2:15 pm

“Cano, he of the .364/.417/.455 line in his last 7 games (including his 0/4 yesterday). WHAT A BUM!

  235. V June 22nd, 2008 at 2:16 pm

“Cueto can look very good for long stretches and then give up a lot of runs quickly through the long ball. Let’s hope that where this game is headed.”

CB, I totally agree. I think it’s control issues – Volquez can get wild, but when Volquez misses his spots, he misses low (you can’t crank a pitch at your shins for an HR). When Cueto misses…. it’s in the strike zone. Hanging pitches go a long way.

  236. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 2:17 pm

“Obviously, you can’t read and you just like starting problems. ”

My point is that you’re wrong…they CAN hit good pitching. You pointed out two such cases yourself. The impression that they can’t is just selection bias.

  265. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 22nd, 2008 at 2:24 pm

It was like Bobby saying, “oh hi there, could you please tag me out? I’m not supposed to be running on the bases. Thank you!”

At least he was polite about it.

  266. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 22nd, 2008 at 2:24 pm

    Cueto w/ a runner on 1B has a 6.11 ERA

Cueto w/ RISP has an ERA of 12.98

W/ the bases empty 2.26 ERA

That’s a dangerous combo, meaning if this Yankee team continues to swing for the fence chances are Cueto will breeze through this game.

  267. Eric June 22nd, 2008 at 2:24 pm

“Just trying to be aggressive. Bobby didn’t seem committed on that stolen base.”

“That’s a dangerous combo, meaning if this Yankee team continues to swing for the fence chances are Cueto will breeze through this game.”

Swinging for the fences against a guy who’s prone to the long ball doesn’t seem like a terrible idea.

Also…whenever guys are made to look foolish by a guy with a great changeup, there’s this assumption that they’re swinging from their heels. But there’s really no evidence of that. All you can do up there is try to hit the ball hard somewhere.

  283. Fran June 22nd, 2008 at 2:28 pm

We got spoiled running on the terrible SD catchers. My 90 year old grandmother could steal off of.

We aren’t a stolen base team. We grind out innings. We hit for power. Stop wasting outs.

  286. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 2:28 pm

He just made a stellar catch before, V.

I disagre totally that he’s soft.

  287. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 22nd, 2008 at 2:28 pm

Zach: bobby must have thought he was in England or something

Did Giambi just actually make a throw to second base and have it not go into centerfield?

  288. Gar Gar June 22nd, 2008 at 2:30 pm

See. That is why you don’t steal.

Giambi up. Posada following. Cano after.

    Come on Girardi.

“You think they can. I think they can’t hit really good pitching. We’re proving me right unfortunately this weekend.”

Obviously, teams will do less well against good pitchers overall. That’s why they’re called good pitchers. What do you expect them to do against good pitchers?

Bobby hasn’t been far from soft this year.

And check the market. Not many good RF’s out there and we got no one in the system.

    Bobby is coming back.

  294. Laura June 22nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm

  296. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm

See, now THIS is the time. They NEED this run. This is how you beat good pitchers. Get these runs, and then shut down the Reds’ offense.

  297. V June 22nd, 2008 at 2:31 pm

Angel, have you been watching him all these years? Everyone knows that he would never go into the wall, no matter how important the catch was to the game. And he’s starting to slow down as seen in the steady decline in SB’s the last few years.

I wouldn’t mind a short-term deal, but nothing long-term with huge dollars. Dangerous.

  298. Laura June 22nd, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Oh God, we have to plate these guys. Come on, Cano!!!

  299. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Thank goodness Cano didn’t swing at that first pitch meatball.

  300. BBB June 22nd, 2008 at 2:32 pm

I don’t know whether it’s that Bobby is soft or he just has the tendency to make certain specific dumb mistakes, but there are times when I want to break something watching him, and then there are times when I think, man, how great is it to watch him at the plate turn an 0-2 count into a walk or a line drive double. I really can’t think of another player ever who I have so loved and hated to watch depending on the day.

“Obviously, teams will do less well against good pitchers overall. That’s why they’re called good pitchers. What do you expect them to do against good pitchers?”

    Just drop it. Jeez Louise.

I expect a good hitting team to grind out games against great pitching. At times we certainly don’t do that. As everyone that watches the games can attest to.

  304. CB June 22nd, 2008 at 2:32 pm

“We haven’t showed up for a whole weekend.”

The offense hasn’t shown up all season. It’s not enough to score runs by hitting home runs. If that’s what your offense depends on then you are always going to have a wildly inconsistent offense.

They’ve been scoring more runs over the past two week – yet over that period of time their team batting average with RISP has not budged at all.

They are hitting .250 as a team with RISP right now. I believe right before ARod came back the team was hitting around .244 with RISP. Might be wrong on that but I believe it was around there.

The most emblematic player on the team right now is Giambi. He’s a microcosm of the offense. Giambi is having a bizarre year. In many ways he’s been the best offensive 1b in the AL. He’s got a 17 HR, he’s got a .394 OBP and a .974 OPS.

But he’s hitting .138 with RISP. .138. Unbelievable. His BA with RISP basically has not gone up much since that awful start. It’s nearly as low as it was in April when he just wasn’t hitting.

That’s why even though he has 17 HR he only has 40 RBI. That’s a terrible ratio of HR:RBIs. And its not like the guys in front of him aren’t getting on base – Damon and ARod are on base all the time, Matsui has often hit in front of Giambi. He’s had opportunities.

If your 5th/6th hole hitter hits .138 with RISP your just not going to score consistently.

I’m in no way blaming Giambi. In fact he’s the last guy you want to blame as coming into this season you just couldn’t expect much at all from him. I’m just discussing him to illustrate a point.

He really gives a snap shot in microcosm of where this team is with its offense.

Hopefully they can get a big hit to get these two runs in here.

  305. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 22nd, 2008 at 2:32 pm

  320. Salvie June 22nd, 2008 at 2:35 pm

Who cares if the RF goes into the wall and looks like Aaron Rowand?

Abreu hits 300 with an OBP of near 400 and can run and throw and can play in NY.

    What more do you want?

  321. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 2:35 pm

Yes, I have been. Sorry, I just don’t think that not repeatedly throwing yourself at the wall, makes someone soft. In fact, I think it makes those who do so rather silly, and causes unecessary wear and tear on the body. I feel the same way about it as I feel about sliding into bases – its risky.

  322. Zach in Port Jeff June 22nd, 2008 at 2:35 pm

  326. Laura June 22nd, 2008 at 2:36 pm

So because Giambi and Posada got hits on the first pitch, Damon thought he should swing? Ugh!!

  327. YanksAngel June 22nd, 2008 at 2:37 pm

Maybe Dmaon was just trying to hurry up and finish his at bat to get this to be an offical game?

  328. Laura June 22nd, 2008 at 2:37 pm

    I wanted that second run!

  329. Salvie June 22nd, 2008 at 2:37 pm

The bottom of this order is terrible. Cano and Melky can’t put two hits together or god forbid a walk and a hit.

Anyone that thinks that Abreu is soft because he doesn’t fly into walls is clueless about the game.

I’m sure he’ll be looking for a 7 year deal. Pass.

  337. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 2:39 pm

I tend to agree with the shorter deal aspect though, V. But more because of his age – not because he’s supposedly soft or anything.

You don’t know that at all.

  341. BBB June 22nd, 2008 at 2:41 pm

well at least we got 1.

re: Abreu…I don’t dislike him or anything and I can understand the wisdom of not shortening your career by throwing yourself into walls all the time (although he shouldnt be so hesitant near the wall either!) but he isn’t getting any younger, and his walk rate I believe has declined every year for the past few. If we would need to give him a 3 year contract or something to bring him back, is it really worth it? He would just get worse every year and by the final year might be practically useless.

With all the problems Tabata has had this year, I’m not sure we can assume our 2009 RF is just a stopgap anymore where we can just DH him or put him on the bench when Jose is ready. What if Jose never pans out? Do we really want Abreu there for the next 3 years? Personally I would like to take a look at Xavier Nady, only problem is that would leave us w/o a no. 3 hitter.

  342. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 22nd, 2008 at 2:41 pm

  343. Nick the Saint June 22nd, 2008 at 2:42 pm

“I’m sure he’ll be looking for a 7 year deal. Pass.”

Who knows what he’ll take to stay. He has made millions upon millions. Maybe he likes NY. Maybe he figures 3 years and 35 mill is better than 5 yrs and 55 in Pittsburgh.

We don’t know. We got no one near the big leagues in the minors ready to replace him.

  344. BBB June 22nd, 2008 at 2:42 pm

I don’t think there is any way Abreu will get a 7 year deal from anyone. If I had to guess the length of his next contract, whoever it comes from, I’d say 4.

  345. jimmy key the pitcher June 22nd, 2008 at 2:43 pm

Here is a question: could the yanks land grady sizemore and if the indians would deal what would it cost the yanks to land him?

  346. RV June 22nd, 2008 at 2:43 pm

Tabata is years away from contributing and we don’t know if he can hit for power enough for RF.

  347. TKinDC June 22nd, 2008 at 2:43 pm

I’d re-sign Abreu for a year unless we have some sense that A-Jx or Gardner is really ready to take that roll.

Abreu is a rock-solid #3 hitter and everybody seems to like him. He also works pitcher like almost no one else.

I don’t get the sense he’ll be looking for a major deal since the option was exercised with no demands for extension.

  348. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 22nd, 2008 at 2:43 pm

You are going to have to spend 50 mill plus on a FA to replace him.

Everybody always says, eh, let’s just bring him back on a 1 to 2 year deal… well that would be great but how do we know some other team isnt gonna offer him more? I can almost guarantee that someone will. There’s a lot of clubs out there that could stand to add some plate patience or a lefty bat or both.

Because we want an OF with about 10 home runs in total and no power?

This isn’t the NL. RF is a power hitting spot. You can’t go into a season with Melky playing RF. And the Yanks would never do that. They’d trade Melky before they made him a RF because his trade value is nothing as a RF and immense as a CF.

You people who want to discard Bobby Abreu so easily need to realize that those young guys down on the farm are not going to have his plate discipline and cannot be put right in front of A-Rod. Who do we put in front of A-Rod? Cano has proven that he can’t bat third. That has to be considered when talking about whether to keep Bobby or not.

Who replaces Abreu in RF if you let him go?

You are going to have to spend 50 mill plus on a FA to replace him.

Remember you are losing your 3 hitter who thrives in that role and helps everyone in the lineup out ie A-Rod.

How do you know how much it will cost for another outfielder? You’re pulling that $50M+ figure out of your arse.

And I’m well aware who they are replacing. Abreu hasn’t been anything special since he’s been a Yankee.

If he’ll take a one-year deal, then bring him back. If not, let him walk and take the draft pick for him.

Anybody know what Teixeira’s performance is in terms of plate discipline and walks?

If he is a grinder, then I can see letting Abreu move on, but I doubt he is as much of a bulldog at the dish as el comeldulce

  401. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 22nd, 2008 at 2:59 pm

V I just want the W this offense freaks me out too much.

  402. BBB June 22nd, 2008 at 3:00 pm

“You people who want to discard Bobby Abreu so easily need to realize that those young guys down on the farm are not going to have his plate discipline and cannot be put right in front of A-Rod. Who do we put in front of A-Rod?”

That right there is the biggest problem with getting rid of Abreu. Like I said in my last post I like Xavier Nady, but he couldn’t hit 3rd. Perhaps the Yanks can trade for a 1b in the offseason who could hit there? Could Teixeira hit there? Or another possible solution is bat Jeter 3rd and Melky 2nd but I don’t really like that as I prefer LHB surrounding A-Rod, plus Melky is very inconsistent with plate patience – sometimes he shows it, sometimes he doesn’t.

  403. SamVA June 22nd, 2008 at 3:01 pm

I think that Cano is just having an off year… I mean I think he could easily bat third… and he would have an easier time of it because he would be protected by A-Rod.. as opposed to… Melky?!?! I don’t know sounds a lot better to me

  404. Ollie June 22nd, 2008 at 3:02 pm

“How do you know how much it will cost for another outfielder? You’re pulling that $50M+ figure out of your arse.”

Really? What would a star OF cost on the FA market?

Let’s see Rowand went for 5 years and 50+. Hunter the same. Gary Matthews JR the same.

So, it’s not just pulled from my butt. And ask A-Rod how much Bobby helps.

  405. JD(Duncan's arm bashes still hurt) June 22nd, 2008 at 3:02 pm

I think Yanks should keep Abreu if years and price is right. He prob wants to stay with New York to keep his name out there with his new shoe company starting up.He might give Yanks a break on price and he’s been a pretty good player for them.

  406. BBB June 22nd, 2008 at 3:02 pm

    thanks

  413. MrMulligan June 22nd, 2008 at 3:03 pm

“Because we want an OF with about 10 home runs in total and no power?”

Are you talking about Abreu since coming over? 16, 15 & 14(?) HRs L3 years…

Look everyone, Abreu has fit our team to a T with his plate discipline but he’ll be 35 and we have too many regulars in their mid-30′s.

  414. Nick the Saint June 22nd, 2008 at 3:04 pm

If I were Cueto and Volquez’s agents I would be demanding strict pitch counts and innings limits.

    See Prior, Mark. Wood, Kerry.

  415. BBB June 22nd, 2008 at 3:04 pm

Well the plusses with getting Abreu to agree to a team friendly deal is that he does live in the city and always did even when with Philly, plus him and A-Rod do seem to be all about hitting next to each other. I would rather overpay him in money to get him to take less years though.

  416. Ollie June 22nd, 2008 at 3:05 pm

“Ollie… do you talk to A-Rod often? can you also ask him to work on catching pop-flys?

How is his catching pop ups hurt the team? I think his 50 homers and 300 BA and 150 RBI’s take care of any pop up short comings.

You Abreu defenders are making your argument on his history – not his performance this season.

  431. Guiseppe Franco June 22nd, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Abreu has walked just 27 times this season.

Just reading Little Mikey Lupica’s column during the raim delay. Don’t ask me why I decided to waste 10 minutes on him,but I was curious to see if he had it in him to be honest about the Willy Randolph fiasco.

Alas, Little Mikey has stayed consistently dishonest and can’t bring himself to call a spade a spade. Every sentence he has written in the last week about the embarassment that is the Mets has had a reference to George Steinbrenner at his craziest.

Note to Little Mikey: George Steinbrenner has nothing to do with the way the Mets mishandled Randolph’s firing. To mention the Yankees in every paragraph that you write about the situation ( which isn’t many)only proves that you are utterly incapable of being honest when it comes to your beloved Mets.

I’d write this comment in the NY Daily News if only Mikey wasn’t such a cowardly punk and didnt allow comments to his columns.

  443. Ollie June 22nd, 2008 at 3:17 pm

“With the problems Baldelli is having, I doubt it.”

That was my point. You are going to see guys like that get huge deals and we know Cashman is not trading big prospects for guys like Rios.

You can carry a guy like Melky if he gives you great CF defense. You can’t carry two of them.

  449. Ollie June 22nd, 2008 at 3:20 pm

    You want Nady??

Are you prepared to give up Melancon or Kennedy or Betances or Montero? Because that is what Pittsburgh is asking. a top prospect because power in this game is very in demand.

You can always make a trade for an outfielder. You don’t have to find a replacement by free agency.

  457. Guiseppe Franco June 22nd, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Bad comparison. Alex has been getting intentionally walked to get the the ’stache.

That’s not at all a bad comparison. A-Rod walked 95 times in 2007 when he had the season of his life. You would think he would’ve had more because he didn’t have the greatest protection behind him.

Abreu walked just 84 times last season hitting in front of A-Rod and he’s on pace to walk just 60 times this season.

Abreu is on the decline and it is clear to anyone who wants to pay attention.

    Ollie,

    Agree 100%

All these suggestions for possible replacements for Abreu are a downgrade.

Abreu isn’t done. He’s the perfect hitter in front of A Rod and an excellent defensive outfielder, no matter what everyone thinks about his “wall” problems.

He’s not going to get offered a 5 year deal. Someone even suggested he will get a 7 year deal. If that happens I want his agent’s number, maybe he can get me a 2-3 year deal. Seriously, let’s belogical. Some other team may offer him 3-4 years. If he wants to stay here he’ll take our 2-3 year offer. Its that simple.

  463. Ollie June 22nd, 2008 at 3:26 pm

“How about Matt Holiday? He’ll likely be on the market. Like any Colorado player, he has bad home/road splits, but he’s still a really good player.”

I guess you’re ready to part with Hughes for him. The guy only finished 2nd in the MVP voting.

    And he’s a LF.

And just because Bobby isn’t walking 100 times a yr doesn’t mean he isn’t working counts, working pitchers, giving everyone behind him a better look.

  469. BBB June 22nd, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Ollie: I would give up Kennedy or Betances to get Nady, but not both and definitely not Melancon or Montero.

Ever since Pittsburgh fired Littlefield and had the new guy (Huntington?) step in, they’ve been extremely greedy in trade negotiations. Not just with us and Damaso Marte, but with numerous parties interested in Bay. But eventually, these guys will start getting closer to free agency and Pittsburgh will have no choice but to lower their demands. I mean it’s not like they’re going to re-sign any of these players, so might as well get something back while they can.

If I were Cash I would at least consider giving them a good package of prospects if they’re willing to throw in Marte, or perhaps even LHP Gorzelanny, with Nady. I am as big a fan of the resurgence on the farm as anyone, but at some point you’ve got to use some of these prospects to improve the big club. Also, since pitching is such a strength on the farm right now and position players are the weakness, some of the pitching talent seems like the thing to part with if we were going to make a trade.

“And just because Bobby isn’t walking 100 times a yr doesn’t mean he isn’t working counts, working pitchers, giving everyone behind him a better look.”

He’s still working counts, but his numbers don’t justify him being a No.3 hitter.

And those 100 walks? Well, that was one of Abreu’s biggest strengths as a player, because his power had diminished. If his .OBP also diminishes, you have, well a diminishing player.

Would I give up Hughes for Holliday? No. But Jayson Stark said earlier this year that the Rockies would consider prospects at the lower level of the minors – though real high-ceiling players – for Holliday. Is that really true? Have no idea.

Signing Abreu last year for 1-year was a no-brainer. But you don’t want to sign an aging, declining player to a 3-4 year deal. No thanks, I’ll pass.

You can’t sign a player to a long term deal just because there isn’t anyone better. Explore all options.

  486. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 22nd, 2008 at 3:39 pm

  488. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 22nd, 2008 at 3:40 pm

I could see them getting Nady in a Marte deal but I don’t see the Yanks dealing those top guys. But maybe the Yanks value those players less than they get written up.

Extremely doubt it, infact if anything watching Nady in Pittsburgh they are not trading him and Cashman watching Marte does not want to repeat the same crap he did. Damaso was Yankee and years ago was traded for UT Enrique Wilson because the Yankees needed a bench bat. He’s not going to repeat the same BS.

  489. Harrison's Deal June 22nd, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Actually, you make a good point. Thinking back, that’s kind of exactly how it went with Abreu. But how is Pat’s arm though? And also don’t have numbers in front of me, but iirc he didn’t have a very good season last year, or at least had an inconsistent one. He is doing great this year but I always worry about the contract year factor.

  495. Yankee Trader June 22nd, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Is it raining hard enough to call the game? Otherwise the bullpen of probably Ramirez, Farnsworth and Rivera will come in to hold onto the lead. Cueto with an ERA>5 shuts us down and Cabrera can’t get Posada home from 3rd with one out. Why can’t this team play to it’s capability and salary? Why do we want to resign the likes of Abreu, Mussina, Giambi and not get younger talent. In fact if it looks like we’re out of the playoffs Abreu and Mussina might be tradeable to a contender for some minor leaguers. Giambi wouldn’t be with his 5M buyout.

  496. Ollie June 22nd, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Burrell is an awful defensive outfielder. And that is in LF in a bandbox in Philly.

No way he could play RF in NY.

He is also one of those guys who won’t age well since he’s slow and unathletic and destined for DH.

  497. Fran June 22nd, 2008 at 3:43 pm

His numbers are “trending up” over his career…much better K/BB as he “matures” L3(with this 1/2 year extrapolated):

    .263/.401/.528/.929 330 BB/ 369 K

    (32 HR/110 RBI)…AGE 32 in ‘09.

  503. Guiseppe Franco June 22nd, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Abreu’s career OBP is .405. His OBP this season is just .333.

Keep in mind that Melky Cabrera’s career OBP is .335.

That gives you an idea just how much Abreu has diminished this season. I don’t want another aging player on the decline to get a multi-year deal.

  504. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2008 at 3:47 pm

The Yanks will resign Bobby because they don’t want to give out long term deals to people like Pat the Bat and I think Bobby will take a 3 yr deal which in this market is short term.

The Yanks can overpay for the shorter years which I think they will do in this case.

Why is that so hard for you to comprehend?

Thank goodness. I’m much happier to see that opposite field hit from Giambi than a home run.

That was very good situational hitting by Giambi. They bring in a lefty to face him. The outfield is overshifted playing him to pull. And he doesn’t try to do too much and just takes the ball the other way.

He needs to do more of that with RISP.

  553. CB June 22nd, 2008 at 4:06 pm

A number of people were insisting that Cashman made a mistake not getting a lefty reliever during free agency.

One of the guys people wanted the yankees to sign was Jeremy Affeldt.

He has a 4.54 ERA and just gave up big hits to Giambi and Matsui – both lefty batters. Exactly the kind of hitters you sign an Affeldt to get out.

Throwing money at relievers in the free agent market just doesn’t work. Paying a mediocre veteran pitcher a lot of money doesn’t make him any better.

  554. Ollie June 22nd, 2008 at 4:06 pm

“I’ve said several times already that they don’t need to make a long term commitment to an outfielder for next season.”

Because a lot of good free agents take 1 yr deals??

I guess you would be happy with Corey Patterson in RF. Or maybe Jason Lane?

    Give it a rest.

They are not going into season 1 of the new stadium with a subpar RF especially with all that dough coming off the books.

You hate Bobby, Franco. Congrats. Be prepared to live with him for another 3 years.

You hate Bobby, Franco. Congrats. Be prepared to live with him for another 3 years.

Don’t bet on it. Cashman would be a moron to sign Abreu to a three-year deal.

Before you start throwing names out there, you should find out what the market is during the offseason.

If he’ll take a one-year deal, bring him back. Otherwise, let him walk and take the draft pick as compensation.

People often complain about this team being slow, old, and un-energetic. That’s what happens when you commit to so many aging players on the decline.

  599. Someone Else June 22nd, 2008 at 4:27 pm

  601. MrMulligan (Pat Burrell Fan) June 22nd, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Will our Manager finally admit thet Krazy Kyle is giving up HRs at an HISTORIC PACE?

  602. yankeenate June 22nd, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Farnsworth is unbelievable…he hates to have an outing without giving up a jack

  603. Someone Else June 22nd, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Wow, Tim Lincecum has given up 3 in 4 innings to the ROYALS, and has the bases loaded and no-one out….

  604. Yankee Trader June 22nd, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Griffey sill hits the fastball. Farnsworth, did he just pitch him 3 straight fastballs? Did he shake off any signs? Can he ever be trusted to have a 1-2-3 inning?

  605. Scorpio June 22nd, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Hope he goes on the DL. Farns is hopeless. Can’t get out of 1 inning without giving up a hit or HR.

  606. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Ugh – that is not good.

Are people still going on about Abreu?

  607. Michael Kay's Worst Nightmare June 22nd, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Obviously I’m kidding here, but still… Kyle on the DL wouldn’t be such a horrible thing…

  608. mark June 22nd, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Tell you what I can’t stand about Farnsworth. When he blows things he has a very “no big deal” attitude after the game.

  609. Scorpio June 22nd, 2008 at 4:29 pm

    Oh sweet, MO time!

  610. Fran June 22nd, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Kyle obviously hurt. He looked disgusted. Wonder who will be the new 8th inning buy if Kyle goes on the DL. Veras?

  611. rconn23 June 22nd, 2008 at 4:30 pm

“Abreu has earned his money plus. You don’t kick a guy for going into a slump. I told someone yesterday. Yankee fans here complain win or lose. At least its predictable!”

Not sure I agree with earning his money plus. He has a .765 OPS, a declining walk rate and a fear of the rightfield wall.

He’s still a good player. But signing a 35-year old player to a 3-year deal would be foolish.

  612. RhapsodyInBlue June 22nd, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Phone call from the Bronx for David Robertson.

    I meant guy

  615. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Oh here goes MK about why a pitcher would go after a ball – the guy who has never played a day in his life.

Honestly, he really is such a dumbass sometimes – especially considering he’d already said when it happened he said it was instinctive.

  616. miggs June 22nd, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Well I was just about to say Griffey’s HR gives Mo a chance at a save.

Now Farnsworth decides to try and catch a screaming line drive with his pitching hand. Not smart.

For those that think Farnsworth to the DL is a good thing, you’re not realizing Farnsworth’s value, especially with Joba in the rotation and Bruney hurt and Hawkins being terrible. This is NOT good.

  617. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 22nd, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Hmm, this is interesting. Looks like a cut, but a little swollen, too.

  618. mark June 22nd, 2008 at 4:32 pm

When I say earned his money plus I mean since he’s played with the Yankees. I expect him to get back on track this season.

  619. YankeeJosh June 22nd, 2008 at 4:32 pm

I don’t agree with Girardi bringing in Rivera here with 2 outs and a 3 run lead. No need for a 1+ inning save here for a 39 year old closer when there’s a decent cushion. You’re telling me Veras or Ohlendorf couldn’t get one out, and Mo is still there as a safety net if things go wrong.

  620. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 22nd, 2008 at 4:32 pm

  621. BBB June 22nd, 2008 at 4:32 pm

  622. Scorpio June 22nd, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Don’t worry Miggs, he won’t be on the DL, looks like some broken skin near his pinkie.

  623. MackNova (blog updated 5/30) June 22nd, 2008 at 4:32 pm

I’m kidding, but what a perfect way for him to get hurt. Reaching up with his bare hand when he shouldn’t and then calling out the trainer himself.

Damnit. Maybe if he’s hurt, we can get some more versatility from our bullpen to the point that we can afford to keep a lefty like Traber in the pen.

I’m sick of Farnsworth, but I don’t want him to be hurt.

  624. Yankee Trader June 22nd, 2008 at 4:33 pm

What’s wrong with Farnsworth-strain his neck looking at Griffeys homer? And Yes , Veras will probably be the 8th inning guy.

  625. Eric June 22nd, 2008 at 4:33 pm

Got to love Kyle. Can’t get 3 outs with a 4 run lead.

  626. YanksAngel June 22nd, 2008 at 4:33 pm

At least Mo gets the save opportunity, I’m sure that was Farnsworth intention and to give Griffey a last Yankee Stadium memory gift. 8)

  627. miggs June 22nd, 2008 at 4:33 pm

Why not let someone else get the last out of the 8th?

Why extend Rivera when you don’t need to?

  628. tim boat June 22nd, 2008 at 4:33 pm

Farnsworth is garbage. I’ll be thrilled if he goes on the DL. Call up Patterson. Enough of watching Farnsworth serve up gopher balls.

  632. Ron June 22nd, 2008 at 4:34 pm

That thumb looked pretty immobile to me. Broken or at least dislocated, I’m guessing. Could be completely wrong.

It looks like we might get to see one those young bullpen arms soon. Or Chris Britton.

  633. Bad Scooter June 22nd, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Does Farnsworth really care about a 1,2,3 inning? We’re up 4 runs, just throw strikes. 4-1 now, no big deal. If it’s a 1 run game and he gives up the bomb then it’s a story. He’s done that before and then you have a right to gripe, not up 4-0. You pitch differently when it’s 1-0 or 4-0.

  634. mark June 22nd, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Miggs you’re right. Yankee fans are so used to kicking Kyle they really speak without thinking of what he has done overall for the Yankees this season. And yes in terms of the state of the pen the Yankees do need Farnsworth in the mix.

  635. Vrsce June 22nd, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Farnsworth is a great pitcher, who can not be relied upon in any important situation.
    very frustrating.

  636. Ron June 22nd, 2008 at 4:35 pm

That’s 10 homers in less than 40 innings. That’s beyond bad. That’s absurd.

    Thank you Mo.

If all Farns has is a cut, he won’t go on the DL. Say what you want about his pitching and there are a lot of bad things that can be said but I imagine it would take a very serious injury to get him to go on the DL.

  642. Q-Zar June 22nd, 2008 at 4:36 pm

“That’s 10 homers in less than 40 innings. That’s beyond bad. That’s absurd.”

    Tight game in Boston.

And it just got tighter. Ankiel tripped and now Crisp is at 3rd with nobody out.

    Crap.

  647. MrMulligan (Pat Burrell Fan) June 22nd, 2008 at 4:38 pm

Joel Pineiro…pitching a great game and Ankiel falls down…leadoff 3B for Crisp.

  648. Wander June 22nd, 2008 at 4:38 pm

That homerun didn’t matter. It wasn’t a terrible pitch, it kept low but went over the plate and Griffey Jr. got to it. So what? Griffey is a great hitter. You guys are making way too much over an insignificant homerun other than the fact it might be Jr.’s last in Yankee Stadium.

  649. TKinDC June 22nd, 2008 at 4:38 pm

“Why not let someone else get the last out of the 8th?

Rebecca read the comments, more than one poster seem overjoyed that Farnsworth’s season could be over.

  651. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2008 at 4:38 pm

Ugh, Ankiel just turned a likely out into a triple for CoCo Crisp. No outs.

  652. pat June 22nd, 2008 at 4:38 pm

    Isn’t Britton on the DL?

  653. CB June 22nd, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Farnsworth has given up 10 home runs in 34 innings.

Only around 20 pitchers in the AL have given up more home runs.

    All of them are starters.

Farnsworth is giving up 2.6 HR/9 innings. That’s unbelievable, especially for a relief pitcher.

But Girardi trusts him so his actual performance on the field doesn’t matter.

I hope he’s not hurt. I’d never wish injury on anyone. But they need to stop pitching him in high leverage situations. He’s the exact same pitcher as he’s been the past 2 seasons in NY. Only now he’s giving up home runs at twice the rate he was last season.

  654. YankeeJosh June 22nd, 2008 at 4:39 pm

    MrMulligan (Pat Burrell Fan) ,

I’m certainly not complaining about Rivera being in the game, but a few years ago the Yankees made a concerted effort to reduce the number of 1+ inning appearances Rivera had, as the thought was it was better for him as he got older. If it was a one run game I could understand it. Even with the off day, no need to push him more than one inning imo.

  655. rconn23 June 22nd, 2008 at 4:39 pm

2-1 Cards. But Ankiel HORRIBLY misplays a fly ball in center and Crisp gets a lead off triple tolead off the bottom of the 8th. Unbelievable.

  656. miggs June 22nd, 2008 at 4:40 pm

TKinDC forgot about the off day.

    Disregard that comment.

  657. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 22nd, 2008 at 4:40 pm

    Britton is on the DL.

    And Matsui looks hurt.

  658. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2008 at 4:41 pm

A few people need to write “Regardless of my personal feelings about him, I recognize that a Farnsworth injury is an overall negative development for the short-term success of the Yankees” 1000 times on the blackboard.

You can use abbreviations if you’d like.

  659. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 22nd, 2008 at 4:41 pm

You had to know if we win today Boston’s not losing.

  660. CB June 22nd, 2008 at 4:42 pm

Steve White was DFA’d – no one claimed him. But he’s no longer on the 40 man roster.

They DFA’d him now because he’s pitching so badly and they thought no one would claim him. They wanted to get him off the 40 man as there was no chance they’d call him up any time soon given how bad he’s been this season.

  661. Yankee Trader June 22nd, 2008 at 4:42 pm

Why couldn’t Ramirez pitch the 8th inning also-only threw 9 pitches in the 7th?
Yes Farnsworth is OK with a 4 run lead, but I bet no one in this blog feels comfortable with him coming in to protect a 1-2 run lead. He just isn’t a thinking mans pitcher- and remember he came from Atlanta, when we signed him to that bloated contract. Who was the relief pitcher from Atlanta that we signed as FA and was terrible and out of baseball the next season?

  662. TKinDC June 22nd, 2008 at 4:42 pm

“But Girardi trusts him so his actual performance on the field doesn’t matter.”

I think the fact that we have seen a fair amount of Veras in the 8th lately goes to show that Girardi is beginning to think about other options.

    We can only hope 8)

  672. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2008 at 4:47 pm

St. L bullpen not helping things…WOW…Pedroia was OUT @ 2B…OUT

  677. CB June 22nd, 2008 at 4:50 pm

    BBB,

Should Farnsworth need to go on the DL I’d guess it’ll be Patterson who gets the call. He’s been pitching well lately.

I don’t know if they want to call up Dave Robertson yet. He’s really dominating hitters in AAA but is still walking more hitters than you’d like to see.

I think they’ll also need another reliever to replace Traber. They haven’t used him for any significant outs since he’s been up – he’s just burning a hole in the pen. Given the short starts they may get with their current starters they could use another arm who can be used more often.

  678. Vrsce June 22nd, 2008 at 4:50 pm

  710. Al from BK June 22nd, 2008 at 4:57 pm

That pitcher for the cards walked in the winning run.

  711. CB June 22nd, 2008 at 4:57 pm

“why wouldn’t patterson steal second to stay out of the dp?”

I agree – I would have sent him.

No idea what Dusty is thinking but perhaps it was to keep the first base hole open for Dunn? He’s a dead pull hitter.

Um, Kay? The odds that Hopper and Keppinger get on are probably pretty bad.

Mo didn’t look incredibly sharp, for Mo, anyway, but Ir eally can’t complain.

  724. Al from BK June 22nd, 2008 at 4:59 pm

    ““Sox just beat the Cards.”

The game’s over in the 8th? When was that rule change made?”

    When Papelbon became closer.

  725. CB June 22nd, 2008 at 4:59 pm

Mo had to throw 31 pitches for that 4 out save. Those are just not good outings for him to have in June.

  726. BBB June 22nd, 2008 at 4:59 pm

    I heart Mo.

  731. Sonny June 22nd, 2008 at 5:00 pm

We are the only team that can beat Dancin Papelbon at Fenway.

  732. mark June 22nd, 2008 at 5:00 pm

I’m thinking Francona has enough class to choose Mo to close out the ASG since it’s the last game at the Stadium.

  733. BBB June 22nd, 2008 at 5:01 pm

I really hope Farnsworth is okay though. Especially because they’re not ready to call up Robertson yet. Ideally, Kyle’s injury will not be serious and he will not need to go on the DL, and then Patterson will come up anyway when Traber goes.

  734. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 22nd, 2008 at 5:02 pm

Kim is on vacation . And it looks like it will be over in Boston. We choked this weekend.

  735. Sonny June 22nd, 2008 at 5:02 pm

Weird that he didn’t run out Edwar in the 8th. And save Kyle for 9th. And give Mo an extra day.

  736. MrMulligan (Tex in Pinstripes Fan) June 22nd, 2008 at 5:02 pm

    Ankiel suxs…

  737. rconn23 June 22nd, 2008 at 5:02 pm

Dumb move by LaRussa calling in the bullpen when Pinero’s pitch count was very low. As bad as the misplay by Ankiel was, that was dumb.

    Is this bizarro world???

  742. BBB June 22nd, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Yeah, I don’t think the Cards have much of a chance to come back without Albert. At least Houston won though, I didn’t trust them to hold onto that 1 run lead any farther than I could throw Carlos Lee.

  743. Yankee Trader June 22nd, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Bring up David Robertson who has done well. 43 so’s in 29 innings with no homers allowed.

Why is Ken Griffey an A..hole ?

  798. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2008 at 5:19 pm

If you want to see what a goal looks like.

    And it’s pretty tense.

  799. randy l June 22nd, 2008 at 5:19 pm

A path that thank god he didn’t take.
We don’t need a 5.50+ ERA starter, even if he throws 500 innings. 5.50 ERA is horrid.

    au contraire

the twins have now won 11 of games 16 when livan pitches.

that would be 11-5 or 6 games over .500.
the yankees are 6 games over .500
i sure would hate having 5 pitchers that the team was 5 games over .500 when they pitched.
the yankees would be 25 games over .500
    that would be just awful.

people just don’t understand the value of innings.

    nick in sf-

yeah, livan would have asked the state department for asylum from girardi ice cream and candy restrictions.

i’ll bet the first thing that the girardi kids do when they go off to college is load up the dorm refrigerator with ice cream. well maybe after the beer. but just before the candy.

He must have been on hallucinogens to dream that one up.

  820. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano] June 22nd, 2008 at 5:27 pm

Didn’t Griffey Sr. play in the Yankees old timers game last year?

  821. 86w183 June 22nd, 2008 at 5:27 pm

A team’s record when a guy pitches is about as irrelevant a stat as you can come up with. Maybe the Twins do well when Ivan pitches because they know they better score at least 6 or 7 runs to have a prayer?

Yanks starters, even the fill in guys (Rasner, Guise) are doing pretty darn well. Still more concerned about no LHP in the bullpen (Traber doesn’t count, I mean a good one!) and a RH hitter for 1B/DH….

Hughes, Kennedy and Igawa are 0-and-8, 8.60… all the other starters are now 29-13, 3.81

  822. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 22nd, 2008 at 5:28 pm

What happened to Ken Griffey Junior as a kid in Yankee Stadium is not a lie, it wasn’t a dream made up, it actually happened to him.

  823. mark June 22nd, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Brandon no offense but I find that an absurd statement. You would refuse to play for the best team in sports because you got yelled at once when you were a kid? Or your dad did?

Griffey Jr. has always played the role of spoiled brat. accusing the Yankees of racism because he couldn’t play on the field, if that’s even true, is equally absurd.

  824. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 5:28 pm

It might be true, Brandon. But its incredibly silly and petty to something Billy Martin (of all people) did 30 years ago, as representative of the entire franchise.

  825. Zach in Port Jeff June 22nd, 2008 at 5:29 pm

Steinbrenner sent down the word to the clubhouse that children were not to be around anymore…this was in place for weeks…Why Griffey Sr. and Jr. felt they didnt have to abide by the rule when everyone else had to?

and to try and place the race card is just ridiculous!

  826. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 5:30 pm

And couldn’t it just have been because Billy Martin was a mean old crank at times, and nothing to do with race?

  827. mark June 22nd, 2008 at 5:30 pm

Brandon let me say this and then I really don’t care enough to talk any more on it. If anyone believes the Yankees let white kids on the field and not black kids they are as distorted as Griffey Jr. If Martin yelled at him I would bet my last dollar he wasn’t the only one in history Martin yelled at.

  828. Blargh June 22nd, 2008 at 5:30 pm

Griffey Jr. has always played the role of spoiled brat. accusing the Yankees of racism because he couldn’t play on the field, if that’s even true, is equally absurd.

If it’s even true you can’t blame him for not wanting to play for the Yankees that stuff actually does hurt, as a kid to have George Steinbreiner and Billy Martin insult you..you think he’s absurd for standing up for himself ?

  831. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 5:32 pm

Only if you’re the kind of person to think everything is about your race, and nothing about the person just being a jackass, Blargh.

Typical, the race card is very popular for people who have done something wrong. No harm no foul the Yanks never needed Griffey hes got no rings and has been on a perpetual DL stint for a decade.

Billy Martin was a great Yankee and I love him, but no one can deny that he wasn’t exactly racially progressive. Of course he was just a man of his time but that doesn’t mean that he never said or did things that were offensive to the black players and their families. I’m not sure I’d have brought it up if I were Griffey, it does seem kinda sour grapes seeing a) how long ago it was and b) that Martin was a man of his time. I certainly hope he wasn’t insinuating that the Yankees still discriminate today, cause that would be ludicrous. But to be fair, Jr. also had a lot of really nice things to say about A-Rod this weekend so he wasnt being a total ahole.

  836. mark June 22nd, 2008 at 5:34 pm

Al from BK I always felt the same way. When Jr. would jawbone about not playing for the Yankees my thought always was who the hell wants you!

  837. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 5:34 pm

  853. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 5:40 pm

Billy Martin said things that were offensive to everyone. At what point does the man being more often than not a drunken jackass, become a factor in things he said?

I suppose if he honestly believes that it was racially motivated, then I can understand his anger. I just don’t see how you can read everything that’s been written about Billy Martin, and as an adult not come to the conclusion that the man was just a jerk because that’s the kind of person he was. There were plenty of black players on the Yankees during the time Griffy Sr played, did Billy have a problem with all of them too, I wonder?

  854. mark June 22nd, 2008 at 5:41 pm

  855. Blargh June 22nd, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Not necessarily everything, but more than one would expect/be willing to admit is influenced by race, be it at the conscious or subconscious level.

Another thing; once a racist, always a racist, or such is how it goes in the mind. If I am convinced that someone is a racist, TRUE OR NOT, I’ll probably keep that opinion for a rather long time. If such is Griffey’s opinion from back then, then regardless of how true or false it was, it’s not surprising for it to remain this way now.

Ken Griffey Jr. has never been a nuisance or a brat w/ anything in his life except for this, he’s carrying a grudge you ever wonder why ? Big Daddy’s Issues:
“In October 2004, The Detroit News reported that Fielder was suffering from extensive domestic and gambling problems. They relied on court documents from Fielder’s divorce and a lawsuit brought against him by Trump Plaza Hotel and Casinos in New Jersey describing debts to various casinos, credit card companies and banks. [2] Fielder later filed a libel suit against Gannett, the parent company of The Detroit News, and the lead reporter, Fred Girard, accusing them of slander and defamation of character. The suit sought US$25 million in damages and fees. The trial court dismissed the suit and the Michigan Court of Appeals affirmed the decision.[1]“

That seems to be one of those things where it depends who you ask. I know he was Prince’s manager and helped him make some money, I don’t know exactly what sort of cut he took. But I always got the impression that Prince considered even a little cut to be too much. Considering how much his dad helped him over the years in establishing his name and career, I always found his attitude a bit ungrateful, not to mention it is downright mean to deprive his kids of a relationship with Grandpa just because you’re mad at him. Ladies and Gentleman, here is a classic example of what is foolish about calling games in baseball over before the last out:

“Papelbon is coming in, the game is over!”

“Double for Ellsbury, the game is over!”

In baseball it’s “never over till it’s over” (Yogi). That’s the beauty of basevball, you can never run out the clock.

I’m very glad those years were played in Cincy and not in the Bronx.

  949. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 6:18 pm

I really think the Griffey/Fielder discussion depends on whose side you come down on.

Ultimately, there’s probably a bit of truth on each side, everything else is just perception and thats as much as we’ll know for certain.

Angel really not to belabor this but when it comes to Steinbrenner’s ruling there is no perception. It’s either fact or it’s not. Either Steinbrenner let white kids on the field but not black kids, or he didn’t.

  976. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Well, there is a bit. There is how Billy perceived the directive from George and how he communicated it to the kids, and how the Griffey kids perceived when being told.

George just shoulda come out and yelled at them all to get off the field. I’m surprised that given the Bronx Zoo reputation, he didn’t do just that. :)

    You realize that

    1) his numbers are inflated by playing in a band-box, and

    2) you’re going to have to sign him for his decline phase in order to get him. Lots of boo.

  995. Montclair June 22nd, 2008 at 6:35 pm

Don’t make it seem like Pat B is Hank Aaron hitting wise. He ain’t. Melky could hit 30 homers in that ballpark in Philly. And his D is suited for DH.

So I’d take his bat but no way for RF. Watch a weeks worth of Philly games and you will see it too.

  996. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 6:36 pm

  999. miggs June 22nd, 2008 at 6:37 pm

Oh man MrMulligan. No offense but I couldn’t disagree more on that one. Pat Burrell? No thanks.

Same with Texiera. I know this is a terrible time to make this argument (the guy had 3 hrs today) but I think signing Texiera hurts this franchise in ways we won’t fully understand until 4-5 years from now (when he’ll still have 2 years left on his deal)

Look, we just are getting out of a 7 year 1st baseman contract. And Giambi is clearly outplaying Texiera this year (at least with the bat) but that isn’t even the point. First base is not a position we need locked up for 7 years. Jeter is old, Posada is old. We have about 5 guys that could be full time DHs but can’t because other guys need to DH.

I would resign Giambi if he continues to play well. Maybe one year with a one year option. Bottom line, his bat is almost impossible to replace when he’s hot. His power is ridiculous and he’s an OPS machine. And he’ll cost a lot less than Texiera both in years and money.

There’s a guy at AAA that a lot of fans forget about. His name is Juan Miranda. He was hurt for awhile and wasn’t playing well earlier but he’s starting to heat up (5 for 5 the other day).

All I’m saying is there are a ton of options at 1st for the yanks. Clogging it up with a mammoth contract for 7 years is a terrible way to go. Between Giambi, Miranda, and the need for Posada and Jeter to switch positions in the next few years, 1st base is well covered.

Now as for CC….. I’d pay whatever he wants if he gets to free agency. I’m actually rooting for the Indians to win some games so they stay in contention and don’t trade him. I’m worried the price in a trade may be too much. But if he hits free agency? Get him at whatever cost, but try to go a max of 6 years.

  1000. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 6:37 pm

Oh thats right, Red Sox vs D’backs. That should be an interesting series.

  1001. mark June 22nd, 2008 at 6:37 pm

Okay not Yadier. What do you think if Duncan and Kennedy come around to finish it off? They’re up next.

  1002. Japsers June 22nd, 2008 at 6:37 pm

You don’t want a better player on a shorter term deal but you want someone who is going to age worse than Giambi on a longer deal and for more money??

    Scratches head

Because there is no way Burrell signs for less than 5 years and 60 million.

  1003. BBB June 22nd, 2008 at 6:38 pm

  1005. Montclair June 22nd, 2008 at 6:39 pm

I don’t see Cashman spending money on Burrell when he can get Abreu for less and less years.

I don’t see him going for Tex either considering that Posada and maybe Jeter may have to play 1b soon.

I do seem them breaking the bank for Sabathia.

1006. Anyone but Farnsworth June 22nd, 2008 at 6:39 pm

Just got back from Tampa. I was at the Rays game last night when they won in the bottom of the 9th. My dad is a huge Rays fan and this was his belated Father’s day present.

I have been to three MLB games this year. 2 in Tampa and 1 Yanks game. At all three, the home team came back in the 9th to win (I was at the Giambi game in the Bronx a couple of weeks ago). What are the odds of that, huh?

    Montclair,

    I’d agree.
Patty’s numbers are “trending up” over his career…much better K/BB as he “matures” and he’s probably ahead of Hank Aaron’s yearly avg the L3(with this 1/2 year extrapolated):

    .263/.401/.528/.929 330 BB/ 369 K

  1042. Wander June 22nd, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Well nobody can deny that this was a good extra inning game.

1043. Bring Gardner Up June 22nd, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Oh well of course they win when we win

  1044. myrtlebeachfan June 22nd, 2008 at 6:49 pm

I’m admittedly a huge Melky fan and find that his energy and defense more than makes up for his offensive slumps.

Many people want to get rid of Melky and bring up Gardner.

Gardner did well at the start of the season and in Spring Training, but has slumped lately. He is far from dominant in the minor leagues, though he is very fast on the basepaths.

If Hughes and Kennedy, who were so dominant in AAA, can struggle so mightily in the Majors, what makes everyone think that Gardner can suddenly be so great, when his AAA numbers aren’t that impressive?

Melky has been pretty consistent over his career in the majors. Sure, the sample size is small, but he earned that spot over Damon and Bernie. That’s pretty impressive. He’s got a lot of room to grow offensively and he definitely hasn’t reached his potential.

We need to give him some time to get out of this slump. If he can show some power numbers and a bit higher avg with some RBI, he could be a longer term solution for center field. Sure, we’d like to have Jackson up here. Tabata in a few years. But Melky has proven himself at least to some extent.

1045. Zach in Port Jeff June 22nd, 2008 at 6:49 pm

    Youkillisp. damn him.

  1046. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 6:49 pm

I really detest Youkillis. Even if he played for the Yankees he’d be Kevin Brown to me.

  1047. Pepitone June 22nd, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Well, a farmer plays all night, he’s bound to win a hand. W

  1048. Pepitone June 22nd, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Why couldn’t the Cardinals have come through, rather than those hated Sox?

  1049. Montclair June 22nd, 2008 at 6:50 pm

That is why the Sox are in 1st place.

1050. Bring Gardner Up June 22nd, 2008 at 6:51 pm

I hate Youk, Paps, and Lowell more than any player in the majors. You can add Schilling and Crisp and Ellsbury and Pedroia to that as well. And Beckett.

    The rest arent bad

1051. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Youk you piece of %&@**#, I had the Cardinals +1.5 runs!

    UGH

  1052. JB June 22nd, 2008 at 6:52 pm

    Youkliss is there O’Neill.

We would be arguing about retiring his # if he played here.

  1053. stark June 22nd, 2008 at 6:53 pm

This makes the past 2 days losses even worse.

  1054. pat June 22nd, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Just saw the replay on Sportscenter. Duncan may have been out bit Varitek isn’t likely to forget him.

  1055. Angel June 22nd, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Uh no, JB – I’d still treat him like I treated Kevin Brown – root for the laundry only.

But then I dont think ONeill’s number should be retired either.

  1056. Pepitone June 22nd, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Where is Aaron (freaking) Boone when you need him?

  1057. james June 22nd, 2008 at 7:01 pm

-I hate Youk, Paps, and Lowell more than any player in the majors. You can add Schilling and Crisp and Ellsbury and Pedroia to that as well. And Beckett.-

Dude, you just hate to hate. You’re like the old sox fans that hated the yankees more than they loved the sox.

    You are amusing however.

  1058. rconn23 June 22nd, 2008 at 7:03 pm

“That is why the Sox are in 1st place.”

What? Because Ankiel mangled a flyball? Because the Cardinals let Okajima off the hook with terrible plate discipline? Because they sent a 240-lb. guy from second with 1 out, when a sac-fly would have scored the next runner? Because Youk creamed a HR off a AAA pitcher?

No… I believe the Cards just gave that one away.

1059. Bring Gardner Up June 22nd, 2008 at 7:04 pm

Dude, you just hate to hate. You’re like the old sox fans that hated the yankees more than they loved the sox.

Actually no. I just hate their personalities. They are almost all douchebags

  1060. stark June 22nd, 2008 at 7:04 pm

I wouldn’t mind Melky out here hitting 250 if Cano was hitting 270. But his OBP isn’t 270!

1061. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Youk’s brother owns a trendy restaurant here in SF, by all accounts he’s a swell guy. I just didn’t want to see:

    a) the Sox win

    b) the Sox win by more than 1 run!

    UGH.

1062. Bring Gardner Up June 22nd, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Teams play the Yankees 10x harder than any other team. Even though they are the champions, the Cards gave them that win where they would have fought the Yankees tooth and nail and made the Yankees beat them rather than making stupid plays

  1063. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 7:08 pm

“That is why the Sox are in 1st place.”

What, because the Cardinals make baserunning blunders and walk a run in on 8 straight balls?

  1064. Wander June 22nd, 2008 at 7:10 pm

    Haha @ Bring Gardner Up

Yeah, they really laid down and died – they only tied the game in the 9th and went to the 13th inning with some great pitching and defense of their own. Sure thing buddy.

    The Sox won it.

1065. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 22nd, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Boy I can’t believe I forgot w/ all the crap that’s been going on today.

Cincy here take your sh… back ! :x

1066. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Let’s be realistic: it was a gift for the Sox to lose 2 of 3 to the Cardinals without Pujols and it’s the Yanks’ own fault they couldn’t make up any ground.

    That’s over now.

On to Pittsburgh, we have 3 aces in a row on the mound!

  1067. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 7:20 pm

“Yeah, they really laid down and died – they only tied the game in the 9th and went to the 13th inning with some great pitching and defense of their own. Sure thing buddy.

    The Sox won it.”

Did you watch any of the game? The Cards pen was shaky all afternoon. They walked in the go ahead run in the 8th on 8 straight balls. They wasted numerous scoring opportunities. The Sox had three straight leadoff doubles in extras and couldn’t score.

They finally scored off some chump from AAA with an ERA north of 7 in the bigs this season.

    Suuuuper impressive.

  1068. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 7:21 pm

“On to Pittsburgh, we have 3 aces in a row on the mound!”

I’m concerned about the Pirates. Three straight lefties that the Yanks haven’t seen much.

  1069. Wander June 22nd, 2008 at 7:24 pm

So neither team played perfectly, but they had equal chances, the Red Sox just made the most of theirs. That’s the way sports work, you’re hardly going to watch games were both teams play perfectly, it doesn’t happen. Stop trying to convince yourself of the Red Sox’s inadequacy when they just won a pretty big game. Move on, worry about what the Yankees and not what they do.

1070. Nick in SF June 22nd, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Thanks, whozat, I was trying to feel good about the road trip going into the offday. Blech.

Well I STILL feel good about it!

  1071. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 7:27 pm

“So neither team played perfectly, but they had equal chances, the Red Sox just made the most of theirs.”

By not being able to score any of three straight leadoff doubles?

    Ok. Whatever.

  1072. Glenn June 22nd, 2008 at 7:28 pm

One step at a time. The Yankees gained a game on the Rays and put more distance between themselves and Baltimore / Toronto.
Boston plays the Arizona Snakes tomorrow while the Yankees and Rays are off.
Looking ahead, let Boston and TB beat each other up on June 30, July 1-2 before the Yankees get Boston on July 3-6.
No love lost between Boston and the Rays.

  1073. Guiseppe Franco June 22nd, 2008 at 7:35 pm

BTW, Gardner stole two more bases today to run his total up to 29 on the season.

He’s walked four times today (hear that, Melky?) and has scored three runs.

It probably won’t happen, but Gardner needs to be promoted to give Melky some competition in CF. Melky needs a kick in the arse and a threat to his job is the only way he’ll get it.

Like Melky, Gardner is obviously not a power guy. But Gardner makes up for some of his lack of power with so many triples and OBP.

Gardner is the perfect guy to turn the lineup over with Damon and Jeter hitting behind him.

    Melky needs to sit.

1074. Zach in Port Jeff June 22nd, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Pittsburgh is not going to be a cakewalk. The ballpark is going to be jam packed and we are facing 3 lefties.

    This is Pittsburgh’s World Series.

I can guarantee they are not going to roll over for us.

I can see players like Xavier Nady salivating right now.

Yanks should sweep, but I wouldnt be surprised if they found a way lose one.

  1075. RayBlay June 22nd, 2008 at 7:36 pm

    is venditte SI’s closer?

  1076. Doreen June 22nd, 2008 at 7:37 pm

    Glenn -

It’s nice to see that someone else looks to see the standings in an ‘opposite’ way, the same as I do. Of course it’s important to make headway against the division leader(s), but I also like to see the Yankees, as you say, putting distance between themselves and the bottom of the division. It’s a process and it’s not overnight, so I’m liking what i see so far.

  1077. whozat June 22nd, 2008 at 7:50 pm

“But Gardner makes up for some of his lack of power with so many triples and OBP.”

He won’t in the bigs. The guy strikes out a lot. You think pitchers are going to be walking him in the bigs, or going RIGHT at him?

If he was hitting for higher average, I’d believe he could get on base pretty well in the bigs.

And triples count in SLG. Gardner…has not really generated a lot of SLG over his career. People are acting like his AAA numbers will translate directly to the bigs. They probably won’t. And his K rate indicate that he might even do _worse_ than one would expect based on his AAA numbers.

1078. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 22nd, 2008 at 8:02 pm

  1079. rconn23 June 22nd, 2008 at 8:10 pm

“He won’t in the bigs. The guy strikes out a lot. You think pitchers are going to be walking him in the bigs, or going RIGHT at him?

What Gardner will or won’t do is merely conjecture at this point. As I’ve said countless times, he has speed that Melky doesn’t have and an ability to get on base that Melky doesn’t have. Right now, Melky is an auto out. He just is. His offense sucks.

Gardner could come up and suck too. But it would be nice to see what he could do. I think Melky does need the competition. Either Gardner or Melky would be the 9th place hitter anyway. I’d just rather have a guy that could steal 30 bases in that role.

1080. Jorge Steinbrenner (the long lost third brother) June 22nd, 2008 at 8:11 pm

    Let’s see….a thousand something comments….

replace Melky with Brett Gardner posts? check!
trade for Sabathia at all costs posts? check!
Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy are busts posts? check!

seems like just another day at the office around here.

    here’s the one i agree with…

    a Yankee victory? check!!!!!

  1081. Sudakis June 22nd, 2008 at 8:56 pm

Forget Brett Gardner already, jeez. As long as the Yankees have A-Rod and Jeter they will not be rebuilding. Forget all these, “They should play the kids!” posts. Why did they spend $300 million to keep A-Rod? So he could watch a bunch of rookies get their feet wet? Wrong.

It was enough to ask a veteran team to endure the special treatment for Chamberlain, which has worked so far. But that is it. Plus, as soon as Gardner is here and batting .250 with one homer, you’ll want a veteran bat! Look at it realistically. a $209 million payroll is not rebuilding. About 70 million coming off the books after this year – most will go to Teixeira, at least one veteran starting pitcher, if not two, a right fielder, be it Abreu or a guy from another team. Plus, Gardner is not nearly as talented as Melky so please come up for some air and be realistic.

  1082. pete June 23rd, 2008 at 11:08 am

I think Edwar Ramirez did a pretty decent job dont you think rebecca?? Mariano, edwar and jose veras have been the best.

  1083. jake 101 June 24th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

wow the yannke are looking bad !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
