Just confirmed this with Brian Cashman. Alfredo “El Paton” Aceves has been promoted to Triple-A Scranton.

Signed out of the Mexican League, the 25-year-old Aceves started the season with Single-A Tampa. His minor-league numbers so far:

15 starts, 97 innings, 69 hits, 26 runs, 21 earned runs, 14 walks, 72 strikeouts. 6-3, 1.95 ERA

Does anyone know what pitches he features? Power guy? Sinkerabller?

  2. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 3:12 pm

I wonder who leaves the rotation for him…Maybe Marquez will stay on the DL for a bit.

  3. Jay T June 23rd, 2008 at 3:12 pm

This is an excellent move for the Yanks. Aceves has been great all year and getting to face tougher batters will let us know how close to the Bronx he is. It’s nice to see that should Giese falter, though Saturday he pitched great, we have in house options.

  4. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 3:13 pm

There’s some stuff about Aceves. Not a power guy.

    “El Paton”

Is this slang? Can’t seem to find it in the Spanish/English dictionary

  6. swc June 23rd, 2008 at 3:15 pm

He’s 25 out of the Mexican league, so that means he’s what, 28 right?

  7. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 23rd, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Is this slang? Can’t seem to find it in the Spanish/English dictionary

“Big Foot” he’s big for a mexican and was viwed that good by Mexican league fans.

  8. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 3:17 pm

    14 walks?!?

    raymagnetic,

Check the Aceves thread from the other day. The story is there. I’ll try to dig it up myself.

He’s 25 Mexico is not like D.R. or Cuba

A few days ago, some people posted that Aceves’ father was called “El Paton” which means “Big Foot”, whereas he was called “El Patoncito” which roughly translates to “Little Big Foot”

  13. raymagnetic ®™ June 23rd, 2008 at 3:23 pm

    Thanks Brandon and Mel.

I just read the background story from Pete’s blog post on Saturday.

  14. Jerome Bettis June 23rd, 2008 at 3:23 pm

I am from Detroit; Alfredo Aceves is from the Mexican League.

  15. ML June 23rd, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Saw him pitch for Scranton last week. You could tell that he’s older than most AA players; he was more polished. Knows how to pitch.

He throws a low 90s fastball, and a tight curveball with good downward movement. He threw a tailing fastball consistently that moved in on RH batters and was effective.

He’s a nice find. He won’t win any Cy Youngs or anything, but unlike many of our high upside pitching prospects he might be ready to help the Yanks this year.

I’m glad to see him go to Scranton. We need to see him face a higher level of competition before deciding that he’s ready.

  16. kd June 23rd, 2008 at 3:23 pm

    thanks whozat. that helps

  17. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Can’t wait to see how he does in Scranton!

  18. Francis The Praying Mantis June 23rd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

    Where is Aceves from?

  19. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

In that Aceves thread and subsequent threads, there was a bit of umm, underwhelming talk. Especially after someone posted that a scout was underwhelmed (not really impressed). But someone said that he has a good feel for pitching.

So even though he doesn’t throw it through the wall, he seems to be a good pitcher, rather than a thrower.

His first starts in Scranton will clear up the picture, but it’ll be interesting to see how he does. We should hold off annointing him or tossing him in the rubbish bin as some here have done.

    But dayum. 14 walks?

  20. dvb June 23rd, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Looks good so far…. K/W ratio of over 5 to 1 with an ERA under 2.00 ?? WOW !

  21. 86w183 June 23rd, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Would love to see him take Hawkins’ spot and DFA that useless lump.

  22. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 3:33 pm

BTW. There was a big debate about Ponson this morning?

As the moral compass of the blog (just kidding), I don’t have any problem with Ponson getting a chance to show us what he has.

I’m sure he’ll be on his best behavior because pitching can buy a lot of booze.

I know that a lot of you guys are being witty and what not with your Ponson jokes, but he’s a Yankee now and we really should wish be hoping for the best. The Yankees go as Ponson, Giese, et al go.

  23. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 3:37 pm

As long as you’re not murdering babies and can get three outs before giving up a run, I’m okay.

  24. Russell NY June 23rd, 2008 at 3:37 pm

“As long as you’re not murdering babies”

    Well that was graphic, Jessica.

  25. Russell NY June 23rd, 2008 at 3:38 pm

    Meant Rebecca, my bad

  26. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 3:40 pm

  27. Blargh June 23rd, 2008 at 3:41 pm

    Rebecca: What about non-babies?

  28. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 3:42 pm

mel: Swords, not knives. Slight difference.

Though I wouldn’t want to be on the wrong end of either.

  29. Francis The Praying Mantis June 23rd, 2008 at 3:43 pm

the yankees cant dfa hawkins…affirmative action wont allow it.

  30. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 3:44 pm

    ….

Well. I mean. Murdering anyone is bad, I guess. It’s just, you know, babies.

    It’s why I don’t eat veal.

  31. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 3:44 pm

    Ugh, Francis.

You must be happy with the Ponson signing. Drinking buddy? :)

  32. Moe June 23rd, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Does anyone know when kennedy is coming back? I’m very high on him. cashman has a lot of decisions to make about the 40 man roster, as alot of talent have to be protected this year.

  33. SJ44 June 23rd, 2008 at 3:46 pm

    This is a good callup.

I’m interested to see how he does in AAA.

He’s not a flamethrower but can work both sides of the plate with all of his pitches. Something a lot of back end of the rotation guys can’t do in the majors.

I’m not one who thinks Giese is going to hold up all season. I’ll gladly take any good performance he gives as long as he can give them.

That said, I harbor no illusions about whether he can continue to pitch well the rest of the season. I’m also highly skeptical Rasner can hold up. Both guys seem better suited to be long guys rather than starters to me.

In a perfect world, I’m hoping either Aceves, Horne or McCutchen can emerge as a viable 5th starter option after the AS Break and they can find another starter at the trade deadline.

  34. Francis The Praying Mantis June 23rd, 2008 at 3:50 pm

I dont drink mel….but, I do like Ponson…I like any pitcher who throws in the mid 90′s with a good breaking pitch….whats not to like? I also think the yankees could use a few more brothers on the team (baseball in general needs more brothers).

  35. gayle June 23rd, 2008 at 3:51 pm

I have a feeling that Horne is closer tan the others on your list SJ., That he was even mentioned as a possibility by Girardi this week even though he is just coming b ack from the DL I think says something about how the organization feels about him.

  36. Russell NY June 23rd, 2008 at 3:53 pm

“I also think the yankees could use a few more brothers on the team (baseball in general needs more brothers).”

Maybe they should ask A-Rod’s brother. Does Giambi have a brother?

All kidding aside, Yankees can’t have too many brothers because they would be unfairly racially profiled at Fenway.

  37. SJ44 June 23rd, 2008 at 3:54 pm

Its all about health Gayle. If he is healthy and can get some innings in, he is definitely in the mix.

  38. bphill June 23rd, 2008 at 3:57 pm

I would love to see Aceves pitch. Imagine Moose, Joba, Aceves.

Then you could mix up your starters for that series to have one flamethrower in the middle of two control pitchers.

  39. yankee2123 June 23rd, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Imagine if this guy could come in like El Duque did in 98? That would really be something, although Duque was probably like 34 at the time?

  40. berniewilliams June 23rd, 2008 at 4:03 pm

aceves seems like he can make it in the bigs. he clearly does not have great stuff, but he sounds like a smart pitcher, and therefore could clearly be of some use this year.

  41. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 4:05 pm

    Two great pitching matchups tonight.

    Haren vs. Beckett
    Felix vs. Johan

BTW, just wanted to acknowledge the great efforts that Andy’s been giving us. 1 ER in the last 21 IP.

  42. Jorge (México) June 23rd, 2008 at 4:06 pm

When Aceves was sent to Tampa Class A Advanced after ST, I was dissapointed, because it was too low for him. Then, he was promoted to Trenton, and he showed everybody it was still too low for his habilities. Now, at AAA, that’s the highest level he has ever pitched. Let’s see how he goes up there. With the quality of scouts he has around, which he has never had previously, I hope he can make it and earn a call from the Yankees. He knows how to pitch. No doubt about it.
And for the person thinking México is like Africa, let me tell you that Alfredo Aceves is 25, not 28 as you suggested.

  43. Mike Ashmore June 23rd, 2008 at 4:06 pm

    Aceves:

    FB 88-92
    Cutter
    Curveball
    Changeup

Only saw him twice — he only pitched at home twice — but his first outing was significantly sharper than yesterday’s.

You can find some videos of him on YouTube if you want to see his delivery, etc.

  44. MC June 23rd, 2008 at 4:07 pm

The below was my post from yesterday on Aceves. You can also go to this link for Mike Ashmore’s view of Aceves with his talk to a few scouts: http://thunderbaseball.wordpre.....ng-aceves/

‘Just back from Trenton Thunder game. sat behind home plate with scouts. Aceves was OK, not great. He is bigger then I had thought {I’d say 6′2 220}. FB topped at 90, mostly threw from 87 to 89. Had good CB at 77, but it was hit several times hard as was FB. The scouts I asked said he was OK, nothing special, maybe off day for him?’

  45. Paul June 23rd, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Rebecca….first time I’ve ever disagreed with you….veal is yummy!I was a cook for 25 years…my folks liked to take us out to eat before that…I’ve been lucky to have been around different foods quite a while…by the way, that steak you had last night had pretty brown eyes too, you know!

  46. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 4:08 pm

    “Haren vs. Beckett”

I hope Haren does well. The DBacks have been offensively limited this season, so I doubt they’ll score all that much.

  47. berniewilliams June 23rd, 2008 at 4:08 pm

what kind of pitches does horne have

  48. TGFizeek June 23rd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Don’t forget getting Hughes and IPK back. Petite, Moose and Chamberlain look like they’ll make up a good core. We need to find 2 other guys from Rasner, Geise, Ponson, IPK and Hughes. If some of those guys can give us 3-4 good outings they can buy enough time for us to get the next guy up.
Personally, I think you shut down CMW now and take the pressure off him to come back. This guys has a bright future, no need to rush him and his jeopardize his health. Besides, he won’t be that much help anyways at that point.

  49. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 4:10 pm

They’re only a run behind the Yanks, though :-)

They don’t get on base near as much, though. So, apparently they’ve been much better at making their baserunners count :-)

  53. SamVA June 23rd, 2008 at 4:12 pm

I think this is great news… much rather see him than Ponson… Hopefully he blows the mets start and we having a huge offensive showing to cover it up… I guess we will see what happens though… I just don’t see why we need Ponson… Hopefully Aceves will be a fast mover to the starting rotation..

  54. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 4:16 pm

“I guess we will see what happens though… I just don’t see why we need Ponson”

because the other options for friday are Igawa and Karstens.

  55. SamVA June 23rd, 2008 at 4:17 pm

  57. ML June 23rd, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Horne is definitely a high upside talent, but I hope they don’t rush him up to NY just to make a spot start. I’d rather give him the year in AAA to see if he can develop to the point of joining the rotation next year.

  58. SamVA June 23rd, 2008 at 4:21 pm

ML- do you read this blog often?

  59. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 4:21 pm

hah, well, I’m not really a vegetarian–I eat tons and tons of fish–but what they do to veal is just awful.

  60. berniewilliams June 23rd, 2008 at 4:21 pm

what kind of pitcher is horne?

  61. Fredo Corleone June 23rd, 2008 at 4:21 pm

    Sj:

When does Melancon move up?? Know he was roughed up his last time out, but he seems ready for SWB. Further, having put up 51 innings so far, how many more minor league innings can he toss before we get concerned about how effective he can be in the bigs?

  62. Joe from Long Island June 23rd, 2008 at 4:22 pm

The next month of baseball will be both interesting and important for the Yankees.

With the trade deadline coming up in little over a month, they need to see exactly what they’ve got before they go making deals. Aceves, Horne, McCutchen, Karstens down at AAA – they will need to make decisions about who can get out ML hitters. I would expect to see some promotions, maybe to bullpen, from this group. And this doesn’t include current group of Rasner, Geise, and Sir Sidney. Even if someone doesn’t figure into the Yanks’ plans, they might decide to showcase one or more for potential trading.

I think there’s going to be some player shuffling going on.

  63. Roberto June 23rd, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Hello Alfredo real nickname is ”El Paton” , his father used to play also in the mexican league and he was the original ” el paton” so when alfredo was beginning his carrer he was called ” el patonsito” but later he became a star with Sultanes of Monterrey (AAA club) and people started calling him just alfredo ” El paton” Aceves.

And yes paton is kind of a slang menning big foot

  64. saucY June 23rd, 2008 at 4:24 pm

when i google ‘El Paton’ a youtube video comes of of some musician named Alfredo…

  65. SamVA June 23rd, 2008 at 4:24 pm

thank you Roberto… have you seen him pitch..?

  66. ML June 23rd, 2008 at 4:25 pm

    SamVA,

Yes, I do. What’s your point?

  67. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 23rd, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Fredo my guess is when spots clear. I mean there needs to be a spot cleaning done here. This is the best quote I ever read from a AA manager/beatwritter.

Thunder manager Tony Franklin said a team can never have too much pitching.

However, on the face of it, it appears the Thunder have too many pitchers.

Part of the problem is that the starters are doing their job. Instead of just putting in five innings of work, they are going seven and eight innings.

  68. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 4:26 pm

    Rebecca,

What they do to veal IS awful. It’s also awful that I willfully choose to ignore it when it’s prepared Picata or Marsala.

However, you’ll be glad to know that it’s been at least 15 years since I’ve had veal. And when I see it on the menu, I’ll strongly consider your opinion!

  69. Roberto June 23rd, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Yes I watched him, he pitched here for 3 years and he was the most valuable player of the mexican championship series last season were he won 2 of the 4 games. He was the Ace of our pitching staff.

  70. SamVA June 23rd, 2008 at 4:28 pm

    ML,
I was not trying to make a definitive point… I was just going to tell you to go read all of the stuff people have said about how horne’s max ceiling is a 3 guy… Didn’t know if you had read that or not… just trying to help.

  71. Jeff NJ June 23rd, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Ok now the question is when do I pick him up in my keeper fantasy league? It seems to me, the Yankees are looking for one of the three, Aceves, Horne or MCutchen, to step up and be the number 5 starter. I guess you can add Kennedy to that mix too. So I can’t really pick up any of the 3 yet.

  72. RER - 98 June 23rd, 2008 at 4:29 pm

In a perfect world, I’m hoping either Aceves, Horne or McCutchen can emerge as a viable 5th starter option after the AS Break and they can find another starter at the trade deadline.

    ***********************************

I concur with you exactly, SJ44. It appears that Cashman is paying strict attention to what is developing at AA and AAA.
The next move should be the elevating of Mark Melancon and with July fast approaching, see how the pitching staff will shape for the remainder of the season.
No doubt Cashman is now in contact with other GMs as a “feel out” process for the 7/31 trading deadline.

  73. Dr. J June 23rd, 2008 at 4:30 pm

  80. ML June 23rd, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Well, OK. It’d be more helpful to just make that point instead of asking how often I read the blog.

And considering that most minor leaguers don’t even make the big leagues for more than a cup of coffee, I think a #3 starter is fairly high upside. And I don’t think he should be rushed, since he hasn’t had much time at AAA.

  81. Jeff NJ June 23rd, 2008 at 4:32 pm

I think he will never be a number 1 in the rotation , hes not a Joba , and his fast ball tops around 92. But he has a great control of his 4 pitches I would think he is a valuable kind of number 4 or number 5 starter

  87. Fredo Corleone June 23rd, 2008 at 4:37 pm

“Jeremy Giambi was a decent hitter as well was he not?”

Not really. Bit player. Had a 20 homer season and topped out at 57 Rbi. .263 career hitter.

  88. saucY June 23rd, 2008 at 4:37 pm

brandon, he looks enormous. especially next to this chick

  89. Roberto June 23rd, 2008 at 4:37 pm

I dont think he will be rushed to the majors mainly because mexican league is around AAA level , and he has 4 years of mexican league experience.

  90. Jorge Steinbrenner (the long lost third brother) June 23rd, 2008 at 4:38 pm

I would kill for “El Paton” to stick as his nickname once he reaches the majors. Just thinking about John and Susyn butchering that…

  91. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 4:38 pm

“And I don’t think he should be rushed, since he hasn’t had much time at AAA.”

That said, I don’t know that bringing him up for a couple starts here and there would necessarily be rushing him. If he shows he’s got it over his next few starts and there’s a need…bring him up. If he struggles, and there’s someone more promising in AAA send him down with a pat on the back and tell him to keep working while the next guy gets a shot.

  92. SamVA June 23rd, 2008 at 4:39 pm

    Roberto-

I appreciate you answering my question… one more thing I have seen his minors numbers and he seems like he can be a strikeout pitcher… but having never seen him live it is hard to tell whether he pitches for contact or for strikeouts.. thoughts?

  93. ML June 23rd, 2008 at 4:39 pm

    SamVA,

    No problem. Take care.

  94. gayle June 23rd, 2008 at 4:40 pm

can anyone say esteban loaiza/rodrigo lopez?

  97. SamVA June 23rd, 2008 at 4:43 pm

    Fredo-
so you would classify him as bad?
last time I checked decent meant okay…? in my book a player who hits 20 in one season is a decent player…

  98. Roberto June 23rd, 2008 at 4:44 pm

    SamVa

its a pleasure to answer about Aceves , because he was a very important part of Sultanes , and Yankees being my favorite MLB team it would be great to see him some day in that uniform.

He was overpowering in mexico, it was common for him to have around 10 Ks per game , i guess he will have to use more his secondary pitches to fool major league batters, but he is considered a strike out pitcher

  99. SJ44 June 23rd, 2008 at 4:45 pm

    Fredo,

I’m not sure Melancon needs to be in AAA too long if the plan is to have him in NY for the second half of the season.

Tony Franklin (his manager in Trenton) thinks he can pitch in NY right now.

Its a matter of openings and Scranton is pretty packed right now.

  100. Paul June 23rd, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Is anyone concerned about the mercury levels in fish? You aren’t supposed to eat swordfish halibut and salmon more that a couple times a month? What’s up with that?

  101. Roberto June 23rd, 2008 at 4:46 pm

    12345

I would say rodrigo lopez control but with a better strike out ability

  102. MC June 23rd, 2008 at 4:47 pm

QUESTION ON ACEVES – READ BELOW–He is NOT a #1 or #2 and he will not K 10 guys in a game. He is not that type of pitcher.

ACEVES INFO: The below was my post from yesterday on Aceves.

  103. Francis The Praying Mantis June 23rd, 2008 at 4:48 pm

from the mexican league sounds alot like jeff marquez….stuff wise. I wouldt start sucking his bozack just yet.

  104. Fredo Corleone June 23rd, 2008 at 4:50 pm

    Sam:

Nothing special, but not bad. He was a putrid fielder (a family thing, I guess)and was never really an everyday player (never had 400 AB’s in a season).

I think of Sean Casey as a decent MLB player. Jeremy Giambi is considerably less than what Casey was. Giambi was an accpetable role player, provided his role didn’t involve use of a glove.

  105. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 4:50 pm

“QUESTION ON ACEVES – READ BELOW–He is NOT a #1 or #2 and he will not K 10 guys in a game. He is not that type of pitcher.”

Has anyone been thinking he will be?

“from the mexican league sounds alot like jeff marquez….stuff wise.”

And plus command of Marquez’s stuff could certainly make him a back of the rotation kind of pitcher, no?

Is anyone seriously seeing more than that here?

  106. SamVA June 23rd, 2008 at 4:51 pm

MC- I’ve read that it just sounded like Roberto had seen him a lot… I was curious to hear how someone would rate him who had seen him pitch more then just a few times…

  107. Roberto June 23rd, 2008 at 4:54 pm

    MC

He was a strike out pitcher in Mexico

im sure he will not strike out 10 per game in the majors its difficult even for an ace.

  108. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 4:55 pm

I think that we can agree that Aceves will be able to help the Yankees more than any of us could (with the exception of Fleas-still waiting for you to get us Santana-haha).

Give the guy a chance to show us what he has rather than pidgeon-holing him.

  109. ML June 23rd, 2008 at 4:55 pm

    Hey,

Anybody here going to Wednesday’s game in Pittsburgh? I’ll be driving out there for it and am wondering if any other LOHUDers (we really need a name, don’t we?) will be there.

  110. jake June 23rd, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Folks should understand that the speed at which a pitcher throws a fastball is only ONE factor in its effectiveness. Movement and location are just as important. And quality breaking pitches will make the difference between a guy who just has a good fastball and the guy who’s a complete pitcher.
Aceves might not be able to “throw the ball through a wall” as one poster said, but there really are very few top pitchers in the game who CAN do that.
When a guy has a fastball rated at 88-92, like Aceves, that means he has average to above-average speed on the pitch. It means he can rear back for a little extra when he needs it.
It means he has “enough” fastball to be successful in the big leagues.
I’m not saying that Aceves will definitely be a successful ML pitcher, but the list of successful ML pitchers with similar “stuff” to Aceves’ is a mile long. I mean, so what if he’s “no better than a #4 or #5 guy in the rotation?” Every 5-man rotation NEEDS a #4 and a #5 starter!! We’ve become so enamored of the power pitcher and the slugger that we seem to have forgotten that great teams are built with more guys who do the “little things” well and that the Hall of Fame is filled with pitchers who didn’t throw the ball 95+.
Has Greg Maddux EVER thrown a 95mph fastball?

  111. Blargh June 23rd, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Paul: No idea what’s behind it, but my family’s been telling me about it whenever I head out with friends for sushi…so lately the only fish I’ve been eating has been sea bass.

Here’s a macabre question from me to LoHud land, inspired by the Ponson discussion earlier:

Suppose there’s a young man; early to mid 20′s. He’ll pitch to unbelievable levels; gives up 0 runs game in, game out, 30+ starts a year, average of 7 innings a game, and he’ll keep this up in the postseason. He can be had for league minimum every year, and he wants to play for you, for the rest of his career. The catch: suppose he made a deal with a particular unsavory chap, or there’s some other sinister background, but you get the hunch that he’ll murder one person every year in the offseason, if he is signed. Suppose that there will not be any solid evidence linking him to these acts…or suppose that the bodies never get found.
Would you as an executive sign him?

  112. Igawa's buck teeth June 23rd, 2008 at 4:58 pm

what I dont understand is how much more does Robertson have to prove before he gets called up?

  113. SamVA June 23rd, 2008 at 5:00 pm

Are you saying Ponson could be that pitcher…. this is more ridiculous then saying Igawa could have a quality start…

  114. Francis The Praying Mantis June 23rd, 2008 at 5:02 pm

is from the mexican league more like alay soler than jeff marquez then, whozat?

  115. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 5:04 pm

    Blargh,

    No proof? No problem.

I am opposed to signing guys (a la Bengals) who have high upside, but questionable character.

Is there a back story with the Yankees and Laptops? Did they decide not to pursue him because of the character issue?

At what potential level do you overlook something like a mistake (laptops)? What if Joba had a skeleton in his closet? Do we overlook it because he’s a Yankee?

  116. ML June 23rd, 2008 at 5:05 pm

    Jake,

No one is saying that Aceves might not be a good ML pitcher. But don’t you think you’re going a bit overboard by even mentioning Greg Maddux in the same post?

Aceves is promising, and yes, every team needs good 4 and 5 starters. But people shouldn’t overreact to Aceves’ AA numbers. We’ll see how he does at Scranton and go from there.

  117. jashell2000 June 23rd, 2008 at 5:05 pm

ML – I’ll be there for Thursday’s game in Pitt. Looking forward to it, and hopefully see Moose get loose. What about you, are you there for Wednesday only?

  118. Guiseppe Franco June 23rd, 2008 at 5:06 pm

Its a matter of openings and Scranton is pretty packed right now.

    SJ,

I don’t think a lack of openings is going to keep Melancon out of Scranton.

If the Yanks really want to promote him – they aren’t going to let the Heath Phillips and Steven Whites of the world prevent that from happening.

  119. V June 23rd, 2008 at 5:09 pm

    Just cut Igawa already.

  120. Francis The Praying Mantis June 23rd, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Ponson>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>From the Mexican League, Karstens, Rasner, Igawa, Kennedy or any other pitcher the yankees could throw out there from their farm system at the moment.

  121. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 5:09 pm

“is from the mexican league more like alay soler than jeff marquez then, whozat?”

I have little to no familiarity with Soler.

You can read the reports we’ve seen here as well as I can.

  122. ML June 23rd, 2008 at 5:10 pm

    Jashell2000,

Yeah, I don’t think I want to spring for another night’s hotel enough to stay for Thursday’s game. I live in Harrisburg, so it’s a little too far to drive home to after a night game.

I’m going Wednesday so I can see Joba. Saw him once in Scranton last year but haven’t seen him live since he came to the Yanks.

  123. jashell2000 June 23rd, 2008 at 5:16 pm

ML – Understand completely. Enjoy the game. It’s my first time going to PNC (I currently live in Chatt. TN) and just missed Joba by one day. I will be at the Stadium on Monday night though and it looks like Joba should pitch that night on reg. rest. I am keeping my fingers crossed. By the way any good spots to eat near PNC? I heard that Permanti Brothers is a must.

  124. Roberto June 23rd, 2008 at 5:18 pm

Here you can see not only what he has done in A and AA but also what he did last season in Mexico. In 2007 he was champion with sultane and win 2 out of 4 games in the finals

Melancon n cox are coming off major surgery. Don’t think they will be saviors.

  126. murphydog June 23rd, 2008 at 5:21 pm

Ponson will not last, especially if he’s drinking again. Can’t shed any tears for an active alcoholic, nor exist in denial about what he is. He’ll get released for missing a plane or a side session or getting to the park late for a game or showing up drunk (or hung over). Hopefully he gives them a couple of 5 + innings starts before he gets canned.

All Aceves has to do is pitch like a No. 5 in the rotation to get to the Bronx – give them innings and keep them in the game. There’s really no basis for thinking Aceves is anything more than that, but he doesn’t have to be right now. It’s one of those situations where he can be a hero because expectations are so low.

  127. ML June 23rd, 2008 at 5:22 pm

    Jashell,

Enjoy your trip up north! Have you been to the Stadium before?

I’m not a Pittsburgh native so unfortunately I don’t know the restaurants there. Let me know if you hear of anything good! I’ll look up Permanti Brothers.

  128. Francis The Praying Mantis June 23rd, 2008 at 5:22 pm

  129. Francis The Praying Mantis June 23rd, 2008 at 5:24 pm

  130. Deegan June 23rd, 2008 at 5:24 pm

you would field a crap team if u didn’t have high upside talent guys on it no matter their questionable character.

  131. Jim PA June 23rd, 2008 at 5:25 pm

    jashel2000-
Primanti Bros. is really good, but the place is a friggin’ nuthouse. Try one of the places at Station Square. Also, you can ferry across to the ballpark. PNC is one of the great new parks. My son-in-law took us there a couple of times. I broke a finger trying to catch a foul ball (it must have known I was a former New Yorker).

  132. MoBoy June 23rd, 2008 at 5:25 pm

Hopefully when Kennedy comes back he can lower he’s era and be decent. So he’s trade value can go up.No way the Yankees are going with Joba,HUghes and Kennedy all in the rotation after such a disater of them to start the season.

Guess those “Save of The Big Three” shirts aren’t big sellers anymore.Thats why you need pitchers who have proven themselves more then a major league year.

  133. jashell2000 June 23rd, 2008 at 5:27 pm

ML -I’m actaully a transplant from NJ (where I grew up) so we went to the stadium all the time growing up, but now that I have kids living down south they have never been. I have not been back in about 6 years now. So I am one of the (thousands I am sure) making the trek back before the cathedral closes for good. Supposedly Permanti Brothers have HUGE sandwiches. Have a good time on Wednesday!

  134. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 5:28 pm

“Melancon n cox are coming off major surgery. Don’t think they will be saviors.”

They’ve been playing all season. It’s not like they’re just getting into games right now. And no one sees them as saviors…just as bullpen options more solid than Hawkins (Cox) and Farnsworth (Melancon). Melancon’s stuff is not diminished, according to reports, and he’s destroyed all competition thus far. So, we’ll see what happens when he gets to the bigs. Hopefully, in another month or so.

If they show they can handle it, you bet they will.

“Thats why you need pitchers who have proven themselves more then a major league year.”

Then how do young pitchers break in, pray tell? They had Wang, Pettitte, Moose and then Hughes, Kennedy, Horne, Rasner, Karstens, Igawa and the eventual arrival of Joba to fill out the back end.

What, should they have given Carlos Silva a 4 year deal to provide “veteran presence”? Or traded for Santana so they could sign him and his already-diminished fastball to a 7 year deal?

  137. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 5:32 pm

Blargh: re: your macabre question…I’m not going to try to answer it, but it brought back memories of going to Yankee Stadium in 1988, when I was 9 years old, seeing Jack “the Ripper” Clark. Hopefully your demon pitcher has a similarly awesome nickname, and also Clark’s eye black/stubble.

And SamVA – clearly Blargh was NOT saying Ponson is that pitcher. Also, you mean “than,” not “then.” (I know it’s a losing battle, but I’m not giving up yet)

  143. Drive 4-5 June 23rd, 2008 at 5:38 pm

The Yanks have another pitcher that’s pitched well just about the entire season at Scranton.

He’s pitched 86 inings and has a 6 – 4 record with a very respectable 3.74 ERA.He’s allowed 10 fewer hits than inings pitched. He has 3 strikeouts for every walk allowed. Hitters are averaging a paltry .234 batting average against him.

He was signed to be a back of the rotation starter. His name? Kei Igawa.

I’m bringing this up so that folks keep things in perspective with “El Patton”. Minor league stats are very deceptive.

  144. Joe from Long Island June 23rd, 2008 at 5:42 pm

Drive 4-5 – Excellent point. Or as Cash has been quoted, “All prospects are suspects until proven otherwise.”

I’m rooting for the guy, like I am for all Yankee players, but we have to be realistic.

  145. MC June 23rd, 2008 at 5:42 pm

ON Aceves, I was hoping to see 92, But I watched each pitch on radar gun and he hit 90 2 times. His FB was mostly at 88. It was a hot day so he should have had no problem letting his pitches go. Marquez hits 91 constantly and throws sinker, they are not similar. Aceves looks like he is 35, but could be 25 as he says. I think he has good command, BUT his stuff is just so-so. When he misses a spot he gets hit hard. I think 3A will be the telling point for him as to whether he can be a #5 starter. He is similar to Dan Guise in his approach. In Mexican league he averaged about 7K’s per 9 innings. His ERA was about 3.7, don’t expect Fernando. He could develop into a guy who can have some trade value or maybe help Yanks in a start or so.

  146. saucY June 23rd, 2008 at 5:44 pm

“Anybody know who’s pitching for scranton tomorrow? I’s headin over there to catch a game.”

    Horne, I believe…

  147. Deegan June 23rd, 2008 at 5:44 pm

The Olney myth of Johan losing stuff is hilarious. What’s his record? Stats? He’s a lefty in his prime. And 3 prospects who may be average is a great price to pay. Especially when we will pay fat CC the same amount.

  148. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 5:48 pm

“He was signed to be a back of the rotation starter. His name? Kei Igawa.”

Yes…but we’ve seen that he does not command his stuff. Also, he seems to think that changeups high in the zone are totally sweet strikeout pitches.

Aceves, apparently, has very good command. And isn’t stubborn and dumb about high changeups. So, while minor league stats can be deceptive, a scouting report that indicates he commands his stuff well to both sides of the plate and changes speeds effectively bodes well.

  149. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 5:49 pm

“The Olney myth of Johan losing stuff is hilarious.”

It’s not a myth. His fastball is several miles per hour slower than it was at this time last season. That’s just true.

Sure, he seems to be putting up good numbers this year…but you’re saying you think it’d have been good to sign him for six more years? KNOWING, as we do now, that his fastball has already deteriorated?

  150. MC June 23rd, 2008 at 5:51 pm

Like I tried to say before {and I was hoping when I sat in the sun for 2 hours to see a great prospect} that Aceves is not that. Read below for anyone that thinks Aceves is going to be a savior. he is what he is, which is a #5 type of pitcher, who hit 90 ion the gun 2 times in his last game. His movement is OK, but nothing special. He will make it based on command. When he misses a spot he gets hit hard.
    http://thunderbaseball.wordpre.....ng-aceves/

  151. TGFizeek June 23rd, 2008 at 5:51 pm

I’m all for the youth movement but it really has gone to alot of your respective heads. Kei Igawa looked good in AAA last year. The Show is not like AAAA. The gulf between AAA and MLB is greater than that between AAA and A. You’re talking about the best hitters in the WORLD.
You can’t move a guy from AAA to MLB, particularly the AL East, after a few good starts. Let’s slow down on the “Aceves for savior” bandwagon. You’ll all be crushing him after he comes up too soon and gives a few bad starts. Besides, who do you send down? The guy with the 3.64 ERA (Rasner) or the guy with the 0.64 ERA (Geise)?

  152. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 5:54 pm

    whozat,

Can’t believe you bit! Deegan was having a conversation with himself.

(No offense, Deegan. We’ve just all Johanned out. And even if we wanted him, we can’t have him. He pitches for that other team, and they’re never going to let him go. Especially since Pedro is no longer PEDRO.)

  153. keith June 23rd, 2008 at 6:01 pm

Santana’s velocity has declined some. He’s still unreal so it doesn’t matter right now, but maybe in future years it will start to show a bit more.

Is it true NY has pulled out of the Iona sweepstakes? Just read ESPN.com which said teams were in on Iona, but NY and other teams had pulled out. Any truth?

Don’t know how to post links, but its currently front page of ESPN.com.

  156. Nick in SF June 23rd, 2008 at 6:10 pm

au contraire, mel, I think Santana can still be had. The Mets would readily take a package of Melky, Gardner, and Kennedy for Santana. Speed and youth!

This trade would benefit us greatly. Not us as Yankee fans, necessarily, but us as LoHud blog posters and readers. No debates about Melky vs. Gardner; they’d both be gone!

I think the Damon/Matsui LF/DH combo is too good to mess with, so that stays in place. Move Jason Giambi to play CF. The way he steals bases, I think he’s ready to patrol the outfield and give his patented shoulder-waggle after every catch. And since most of his throws from first base end up in the outfield, it stands to reason that most of his throwns from the outfield would end up back in the infield.

GM extraordinaire Cashman can then spin some more spare parts into Tex or some other 1B stud.

Hmmm, maybe we are Johanned out after all.

  157. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 6:14 pm

    LOL, Nick.

We’ve been Canoed, Melkied, Arroyoed out.

  158. Drive 4-5 June 23rd, 2008 at 6:17 pm

    whozat,

I’m hoping Aceves can help us. But I’ll remain skeptical about Aceves. I’ve read too many opinions like this from another blog:

“Yes, he’s been good so far in the minors. But, you expect a 25-year old with six years of professional experience to be able to handle High-A and Double-A batters.

Put it this way: Aceves is the same age, and has the same build, as the Angels’ Ervin Santana. How well do you think Santana would do if he was pitching in High-A or Double-A right now? This is why we have to see Alfredo Aceves against some more seasoned competition before we, in Yankeeland, start to count on him to help at the big league level.

  159. Don Vito A. Bellamo June 23rd, 2008 at 6:18 pm

It will be so much fun to see JerkFace, I mean Beck@$$, I man Joshey Boy get the living snot kicked out of him tonight on National TV. Couldn’t happen to a nicer fella !

  160. Carlos June 23rd, 2008 at 6:18 pm

DISCLAIMER: I know Aceves personally but this opinion is really unbiased as I’m not a Yankees fan; I’m a journalist/beat writer for a few teams of the Mexican League.

Aceves has a fantastic feel for pitching and great command and movement, despite what some scouts have said in the United States. He doesn’t hit 90mph consistently; however, he doesn’t need to. With his high-80′s sinker and knee-buckling curve he sets up hitters only to finish them with a great cutter, which is a carbon copy of his fastball but with 50% more movement. The “junkballer” assertion is quite unfair, especially after seeing his plus-plus cutter.

Aceves is indeed nicknamed “Patoncito”, Spanish for “little bigfoot”, in honor of his father, a former Mexican League great; Alfredo has been urging for a minor league look since he showcased his talent in the Mexican League Finals two years ago.

The only question left is whether the Yankees will be smart enough to insert Aceves into their rotation. The Braves did it with Campillo, and look at the early results; Campillo is most likely the pitcher whose ability compares the best with Aceves; that should give you an idea of how he’s going to pitch like in the near future.

At 25, he’s obviously not a pitcher to build a rotation around. He’s more of a 4th starter in the majors — the one you value a lot because of his ability to go deep into games and save the bullpen. With some run support, he could easily be the Aaron Small of 2008, with a better look for the future.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

  161. TGFizeek June 23rd, 2008 at 6:18 pm

  162. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 6:21 pm

    Carlos,

Thanks for the objective post. I think we should wait for some of the early returns before calling the election.

  163. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 6:22 pm

    “Santana’s velocity has declined some.”

His FB is 2 MPH slower on average than it was in 06, and he’s throwing his slider less (he threw it a LOT less last year…)

Also, his K rate is down over a batter per nine, his hits per nine are up, AND his HR rate is almost as poor as it was last year.

I dunno…but seeing those signs from a guy I have signed for 6 more years would not make me happy.

  164. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Also…how much would it stink to be the OTHER Johan Santana?

He was also a pitcher, in the Angels’ system, that crapped out back in 02. Still :-)

  165. Carlos June 23rd, 2008 at 6:25 pm

    CORRECTION:

By high-eighties sinker I mean his normal fastball e.g. the one he starts batters with.

  166. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 6:29 pm

Hey, so…who does the NL use as the DH in the all-star game? Just whoever the manager chooses among the guys who didn’t get voted in?

  167. MoBoy June 23rd, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Why are people down on SAntana. At least he’s actually pitching unlike Hughes,And Kennedy.I love how people think these prospects can’t do wrong even though they have sucked.Every pitcher who signs a contract there last 1 to 2 years aren’t gonna be great.

Look at Pettitte.People want him back next year even though he’s only beating up on the bad teams and never plays good against great lineups teams like Boston and the Orioles. And like Wang he’s been in the DL the past 3 years.

Santana might not be as great as last year but it’s better then what the Yankees have.

  168. Drive 4-5 June 23rd, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Gracias Carlos! Perhaps my skepticism will wane after reading your post.

But if you get my hopes up and Patoncito disappoints we will hunt you down!

    Joking!!! LOL:)

  169. SJ44 June 23rd, 2008 at 6:40 pm

He’s better than what the Yankees have but that’s not the point.

The point is, counting the luxury tax, the Yankees would be paying Santana 28 million dollars this year.

Has he pitched like a 28 million dollar pitcher? No.

He’s also pitching in an easier league and hasn’t made the Mets any better than they were last year.

Couple that with his stuff, which isn’t as good as it was a year ago, and its pretty hard to argue the Yankees should have taken the leap with him. Especially based on what we have seen so far this year.

He could have a big second half and make everyone look foolish. Or, he could pitch like he did in the second half of last year when he struggled bigtime.

If he does, you can bet nobody would be losing sleep over not committing 6 years and over 130 million dollars, plus the 40% per year luxury tax hit on his salary, to him.

  170. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 6:43 pm

“Couple that with his stuff, which isn’t as good as it was a year ago, and its pretty hard to argue the Yankees should have taken the leap with him.”

It’s not that hard if you’re incapable of thinking past the 2008 season :-)

  171. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 6:45 pm

“.And like Wang he’s been in the DL the past 3 years.”

Pettitte hasn’t been on the DL since 2004.

  172. Deegan June 23rd, 2008 at 6:46 pm

When we pay Cc the same amount what then? I’d rather have the better pitcher. And the yanks don’t give 2 poops bout money. They paid 46 mill for Igawa!!!

  173. Deegan June 23rd, 2008 at 6:47 pm

The olney myth about his stuff is pure myth. Watch tonight.

  174. SJ44 June 23rd, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Who says they will pay CC the same money? Certainly nobody with the Yankees.

If the Yankees didn’t care about the money, they would have made the deal. Clearly, they do care about the money.

Just because they made financial mistakes in the past doesn’t mean they will continue to repeat them and they haven’t in the past year.

  175. andy Hawkin's ghost June 23rd, 2008 at 6:52 pm

So, at best he’s Darrell Rasner-decent innings eater. At worst he’s…….Sidney Ponson. I cannot believe Ponson is pitching for us on Friday. UGH!

Hey, Pete. What happened to the function that catches the double posts?

  179. munchabuncha June 23rd, 2008 at 6:58 pm

How many times are we going to go around and around about Santana? Doesn’t it get a little silly? Let’s say the Yankees did get him. How many more wins would it have meant to this point?

    Geez.

  180. Doreen June 23rd, 2008 at 6:58 pm

I have been layin’ low here the last couple of days, just browsing. I see you are all in fine fettle and the conversations moving along nicely.

    MC -

We were scared away from attending yesterday’s Thunder game by the threat of thunderstorms, which I gather did not occur. We had already gone to one rain-shortened game in Trenton this season, and though we had fun getting wet, did not think we should do it intentionally so soon after the first time! When I read that Aceves was starting, I was bummed we didn’t go, because I wanted to see him myself, too. So, he had a bad game. May I ask you, did you ask the scout you spoke with how many times he had scouted Aceves? Anyway, not every pitcher is a #1, 2 or 3, and pitching staffs do need quality #4 and 5 guys, so if that’s where he would place, I say, fine. And I guess we’ll see. I’m keeping an open mind on everyone. Hey, my husband and I saw McCutcheon pitch – he was awful that day and we were scratching out heads trying to figure out why people thought he was good, and 2 days later he was promoted to SWB. Looks like Aceves did the same thing – bad outing, boom, promotion. So, apparently the organization is seeing an overall picture that we obviously were not going to see in one outing. I still think the bad outing had to do with the proposal the night before. :)

I wish we could all stop talking about Johan. Like Mel said, it’s over – he’s on that other team and he ain’t crossing the bridge on a one-way toll.

I have one question about Ponson. How come the last time he was with the Yankees I never heard ANYTHING about him having a drinking problem???????? Or any problem not relating to pitching. Actually, didn’t he do okay at first, and then kind of peter out? If he does that again, one or two good starts, that kind of serves the Yankees purposes for now, so I’m okay with that.

I was so impressed with Dan Geise the other day.

I’m finding myself actively rooting against the Mets these days. When Willie was there, I was effectively neutral, but wanted to see Willie do well. Now, well, it just doesn’t matter, does it?

For all I talked about voting for the all-star game, I haven’t done it yet. Oops!

I think that’s it for now. Oh, we saw Get Smart yesterday. We loved it, and I literally laughed so much at one scene that I snorted. Yes, I did. I don’t get out to the movies a lot, but I recommend this one. Fun.

  181. Rob June 23rd, 2008 at 6:59 pm

I dont know if this has been discussed on lohud lately, but has anyone noticed that this year there has been a huge amount of red sox games on espn, fox, and tbs this year compared to very few yanks games.. in the past it seemed they always played an even amount of yanks and sox games??

  182. SJ44 June 23rd, 2008 at 7:03 pm

I think Santana is a great pitcher. I would not have traded Hughes, Kennedy, Cabrera and a fourth player for him or Wang, Kennedy, Cabrera and a another player.

Those were the two deals the Twins would have agreed to for his services. There were on other deals on the table and that has been confirmed by both Cashman (numerous times), Santana’s agents and Bill Smith, the Twins GM.

The Yankees are 4 games out of first place in the loss column right now.

They are behind more because of their lack of offense, particularly with RISP than because of their starting pitching.

That’s the ironic part of the season so far.

Put it another way. Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte and Chien Ming Wang have all won more games than Santana so far this year.

As good as Santana is, he’s only one pitcher. No one pitcher wins a World Series. If he could, he would be wearing World Series rings from his Minnesota days when he was the best pitcher on the planet.

  183. Nick in SF June 23rd, 2008 at 7:06 pm

Deegan, are you related to the famous Major Deegan?

And are you accusing Buster Olney of doing something to diminish Sanatana’s fastball? That would be underhanded indeed.

  184. VRSCE June 23rd, 2008 at 7:06 pm

The Yankees have finally decided to stop the flow of their cash to other teams like the Rays.

Once they can protect their revenue by the cost of the new stadium the golden stream will be significantly reduced.

  185. Yankee Trader June 23rd, 2008 at 7:12 pm

No pitcher should be signed for six years. Even 4 years is a stretch. But now that other teams are raking in the bucks, especially with Yankee revenue sharing, this is what the Yankees will be competing with. Also FA’s don’t have the allure to sign with the Yankees like before, probably because other teams are shelling out big bucks.

So, no Santana and Sabathia are not worth a 6-7 year contract. Look at Mike Hampton and Barry Zito! The Yankees need to go with their young homegrown pitchers.

The lack of position players in the minors ready to play, will probably cost them to overspend on older players for 1-2 year contracts.

  186. andy Hawkin's ghost June 23rd, 2008 at 7:12 pm

    Doreen-

Ponson was a character risk even the first time. More time has passed and he continues to be a problem. You are right, he is a stop gap. The Ponson and Aceves moves are related I suspect. If Aceves continues to impress and Ponson peters out again (or is a disaster as I feel he will be) then Aceves is next on the list. If he flames out, then Kennedy should be ready. If he flames out……?

  187. Someone Else June 23rd, 2008 at 7:16 pm

“According to data obtained by ESPNdeportes.com, at least seven teams were ready to give Inoa a bonus of more than $3 million, but many of them, including the New York Yankees, pulled out of the race as the price for the young ace went up.”

God, I hope this is smoke. This is the type of talent you -have- to land, even if it takes $6M (#1 American draft pick money).

  188. Yankee Trader June 23rd, 2008 at 7:17 pm

  189. Yankee Trader June 23rd, 2008 at 7:24 pm

  190. Jeff NJ June 23rd, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Wait so Ponson was moved to AA. Anyone think the Friday pitcher could actually be Aceves not Ponson as the team is implying?

  191. SJ44 June 23rd, 2008 at 7:25 pm

How do you know he’s worth 6 million dollars? Seems to be a lot of money to me.

Perhaps he is but, unless you see him pitch against real competition, that’s a lot of coin.

I don’t think a HS pitcher in the states have ever signed for more than 3 million. This would be breaking new ground for a kid this age.

  192. ERâ„¢ (The Last Yankee Fanâ„¢) June 23rd, 2008 at 7:26 pm

I deserve to receive a thank-you card from him

  193. SJ44 June 23rd, 2008 at 7:27 pm

    Jeff,

No. Trenton is just the stopping point for Ponson before he pitches in the doubleheader.

The move is procedural so Scranton can activate Cox from the DL.

Aceves won’t pitch in a major league game until he shows he can take care of business in AAA.

  194. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 7:28 pm

How does anybody feel about NYY taking a flyer on freddy bynum as the Yanks UT for the rest of the year in place of Gonzales? He’ll hit a little better, plays the same infield positions as well as all three outfield spots. What he has is the ability to bunt and blinding speed. He was dfa’d by Baltimore, today. He won’t carry a team on his back, but, he has more to offer than Gonzales.

  200. SJ44 June 23rd, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Somebody tell Brandon to add another HR to the Santana homer.

He just gave up a grand slam to King Felix.

  201. Guiseppe Franco June 23rd, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Brett Gardner led off the Scranton game with another triple. That gives him 10 on the season and it’s still only June 23rd.

It would be nice to have such a spark at the bottom of the Yankee order while Damon is still hitting well and Jeter finally starting to turn it on.

Looks like none of the runs were earned on a Wright fielding miscue with two outs.

  210. SJ44 June 23rd, 2008 at 7:43 pm

They may not be earned but, he gave up a grand slam to a pitcher.

Imagine if he did that as a Yankee? Folks would come on here ripping Cashman for trading for him.

    Others would be suicidal.

Earned or unearned, giving up a slam to an AL pitcher ain’t pretty.

  211. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 7:44 pm

  212. Someone Else June 23rd, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Felix Hernandez was a career 1/8 with 6 Ks, lol.

Not to pile on or anything, but Brandon, you need to update the handle.

Man, I can’t imagine what Santana is feeling giving up a grand slam to a pitcher from the AL. Seeing how the Mets are right now, you have to wonder how happy he is about going there. While the money always helps, it doesn’t feel great going to a team and see them struggling and having turmoil.

Dont worry. The Mets who play a lackadasical game at best will be an entirely different team on the weekend. It seems like the play their best against the Yankees which is stupid as they need to win as many as they can. A few weeks ago they took two from the Yanks then went right down hill.

  238. yankee lover June 23rd, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Milton Bradley in the OF, he is always injured

  272. Mark (Free Brett Campaign) June 23rd, 2008 at 8:49 pm

Go get em Brett from Chad Jennings:

Top fifth: Just a few days ago I was asked about Brett Gardner’s arm. Well he just threw out the Clippers’ lead-off man trying to score from second on a single up the middle. On-the-money throw, and a good block of the plate by JD Closser. Gardner doesn’t have Melky Cabrera’s arm strength, but his throws are almost always accurate and he knows when he can get an out and when he can’t.

Bottom fifth: Brett Gardner just scored from second on a routine ground out. Seriously.

One out. Gardner at second, Basak at first. Both runners were running on the pitch and Duncan grounded weakly to short. Gardner trotted into third easily and when the shortstop threw to first, he turned on the speed and scored without a play. Earlier in the inning, JD Closser scored on a Basak single, and later in the inning, Basak scored on a single from Juan Miranda.

Hey Rebecca this is a small sample but I put this together for you. I don’t think it’s your karma at the Yankee games. The two games the Yankees lost this weekend that guy Ray from the Red Sox was here sticking his nose in. The game we won he was nowhere in sight. I don’t think it’s you. I’d say it’s him. Yankee fans should boycott talking to the guy when Yankees are playing. Or if someone wants to talk to him in games take it to email.

If Inoa is 6′ 7” at 16 years, how much more tller he will grow? If he gets any taller, he may have mechanical problems in his delivery. Unless the team signing is sure he will not grow taller, it will be risky singing.

    How risky? $5M?

I don’t consider that alot of risk compared to any other MLB signing. Japan? Amateur Draft?

The Yankees major remaining advantage is the international market. They need to flex their muscles there while they still can. If their scouts say this guy has potential, pay up.

Bedard has already missed time this season. And the M’s will require value similar to what they sent for him. And plenty of teams can afford to bid because he still has another year on his deal.

He will be too pricey in terms of talent, and he never makes a full complement of starts.

  363. mark June 23rd, 2008 at 9:47 pm

    HAH

  366. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 9:48 pm

    “I thought it was Action.”

    He hasn’t earned it yet.

Melancon is the only guy I figured it could be if he wasn’t referring to Aceves, which he almost certainly is.

  367. mark June 23rd, 2008 at 9:48 pm

You kidding? The pitcher got a granny?????

  368. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Bedard has a seriously F*(KED up Hip.

We can’t get that dude when he’s literally a very good candidate to succeed Carl Pavano in our miserable dissapointments pitching signings.

  373. Russell W June 23rd, 2008 at 9:50 pm

    Santana is 7-6 this season.

  374. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 9:50 pm

  376. Nick in SF June 23rd, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Not only is Haren pitching like an ACE, he also has HEART, as shown by his fist pump.

And I agree that the Yanks shouldn’t be outbid by Oakland. In fact, the Yanks should never be outbid by Oakland on the open market. If someone is worth X to Billy Beane, shouldn’t he be worth X+$1 to the Yankees?

  377. Russell W June 23rd, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Up until the 9th inning I think the Mets had 2 hits and 1 run. Keith Hernandez says “I like what I see Gar”

Rishi thanks. I’ll go there now. That had to be awesome.

Too bad he pulled up hurt though.

  384. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 9:57 pm

It appears that the Yankees are stretching Melancon out to be the long man in the bullpen. 5 games of 3 innings in his last 11 games. 3 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 2 strikeouts, 6 ground ball outs for the save.

  385. 27 this year June 23rd, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Is Haren still pitching into the 8th?

  386. M. Francessa PTRS 08 June 23rd, 2008 at 9:58 pm

He didn’t pull up “hurt” BELTRAN SPIKED HIM VICIOUSLY because he tried to cover homeplate and looked like it was the first time he’d done so since little league…(In his case probably 6 yrs ago) but nonetheless he looked like Joba did when we all had near death experiences last week against the Padres.

AL pitchers need to chill out with the heroism lol.

Not totally kidding the Wang thing has me furious.

    Hank’s got a point IMHO. ;-)

  388. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 14) June 23rd, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Ponson was sent to AA Trenton tonight.

Our Juvenile Deliquent is starting to show signs of pulling the inside pitch. He’s 1 for 3 w/ a single to CF.

  389. 27 this year June 23rd, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Melancon shouldn’t be the long man
The Yankees have so many starters, turn one of them into the long man, dont waste a perfectly good setup man, possible future closer as a long reliever

  390. Boston Dave June 23rd, 2008 at 10:00 pm

“If someone is worth X to Billy Beane, shouldn’t he be worth X+$1 to the Yankees?”

Yup… Being a GM isn’t terribly easy, but Beane has shown time and time again that he is a pretty good one. If he is sold on a guy, and the only thing keeping the Yanks from getting that guy is Oakland$ + 1, you gotta go for it.

Of course, we have no idea how truthful any of the reports coming out are.

  391. mark June 23rd, 2008 at 10:00 pm

Rishi that was a great watch. Seeing the reaction in the Mariners dugout especially. That’s a team that didn’t have much to cheer for this season.

So I learned that this was King Felix’s first AB this season. His first home run ever. How about this? The first Seattle Mariner’s pitcher home run ever.

Great night for the Mariners. Almost.

  392. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 14) June 23rd, 2008 at 10:01 pm

27 I for some reason see Melancon filling in the long relief ace ala Goose Gossage, he flips lineups, he gets through innings w/ low pitch counts.

  393. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 10:01 pm

27 This Year, Mariano came up as a long man.

Guess when they say Melancon’s Mo’s successor, they’re not joking.

  394. mark June 23rd, 2008 at 10:01 pm

    27, Haren is out.

  395. Boston Dave June 23rd, 2008 at 10:02 pm

IIRC, Haren often had trouble with the Sox lineup when he was with Oakland.

Nice to see him put in a good outing this time.

  396. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 10:02 pm

“Melancon shouldn’t be the long man”

He won’t be. This way he gets plenty of innings, but in a nice structured way. No quick turnarounds, pitching two days in a row etc. Yet.

  401. rconn23 June 23rd, 2008 at 10:05 pm

  431. rconn23 June 23rd, 2008 at 10:16 pm

The D Backs deserve what they get. One thing I admire about Francona is that he shoves the starters down your throats. They typically go at least 7. Beckett had a little extra rest so he left him in for 8.

He doesn’t panic and go to his bullpen because his starters are close to 100. Haren should have been left in, and that’s all there is to it.

  432. mark June 23rd, 2008 at 10:17 pm

These Dbacks really need to score an insurance run, save Haren’s win! It was incredibly dumb to remove him in the first place. Why do these managers always make the dumbest of moves against Boston and manage like it’s the biggest game of their career vs. us?

Also, I just have the game on mute but does anyone else hate the graphics ESPN now has during each AB: Reynolds with 3-2 count and so on…and they adjust these for every pitch! Lame, if they want to do graphics at least tell us something useful like avg. with men on, or vs RHP, or something! ESPN fails once again.

Cashman may well be at the game, he is everywhere! Ever since spring training, I have (half chidingly) called for Brett to be called up.
With Melky hitting the way he is, why not now? There are some here that think Brett is a 5th or worse OF, I strongly disagree. Cashman, when asked of him, said something like; “If he were a right handed batter, he would be up already!” 27/08?

Old Ranger the problem is Matsui and Damon figure in this too. Because someone is going to lose playing time, if anything now would be the perfect time, Brett would play a team he’s seen before in ST, but it all depends on what the hell Cashman is up to.

Interesting CJ Henry was 3 for 4 tonight w/ an RBI, 2 linedrives and a groundball base hit.

Chris Smith was 0 for 3 w/ a R and a SB and 2 K’s in his GCL debut, rough day for the kid, he must have been so into it.

Note: Eversince CJ has been added to Tampa James Cooper and Tim Battle have started to swing the bat better.

  476. DFox June 23rd, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Yeah the fact that Varitek is leading in the all-star voting is utterly disgraceful. I get it, he’s a leader. Besides that what does he offer? They might as well put Nelson Mandela in as the catcher. I’m sure he would be an amazing leader and would provide basically the same offense that Varitek does.

  477. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 10:47 pm

Brandon: I thought we traded CJ Henry?

  478. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 10:50 pm

If the Yankees were going to bring up an extra outfielder, right now, I’d bring up Christian. He can play all three outfield spots, and, in an emergency can play 2nd base. He has Gardner’s speed, but, may be a smarter runner, he can hit, and, he bats right handed. He’s also hit over .300 at AAA since July of last year. He walks only slightly lees than Gardner, but, strikes out far less. 14 doubles, 1 triple, 4 homers, 39 RBI, and 18-3 in steals in under 200 At Bats.

  479. Mark (Free Brett Campaign) June 23rd, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Rebecca, I think we traded him for Abreu. He then went to the Philly minor organization, and was terrible. He might have asked for his release. Now back with the Yankes. This was the kid on draft who said he would be in the majors in like three years. We pretty much got Abreu for free. i think we gave up a rp in that deal.

  480. munchabuncha June 23rd, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Its all about the “C” he has to wear on his chest to prove his leadership.

  481. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Rebedda, Philly released him at the end of last year, and NYY resigned him. His major problem was that he needed glasses.

  482. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 14) June 23rd, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Brandon: I thought we traded CJ Henry?

He came back to us the same week Alex did.

  483. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 10:53 pm

    ***Rebecca***

  484. munchabuncha June 23rd, 2008 at 10:54 pm

How can all these baseball players need glasses and not know it? Hughes, Betemit, CJ… it boggles the mind, doesn’t it?

  485. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 10:55 pm

“Yeah the fact that Varitek is leading in the all-star voting is utterly disgraceful”

    He isn’t, anymore :-)

Mauer is. Go make sure he stays there!

  486. Mark (Free Brett Campaign) June 23rd, 2008 at 10:57 pm

Henry turned heads when drafted by saying he would be in the big leagues within two years, even if he had to move from short, where Derek JeterDerek Jeter played, to the outfield.

  487. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 10:58 pm

    Hey now, I didn’t know I needed glasses until I was 17.

  488. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 11:03 pm

If all you know is what you and how you see things, you compensate and figure that things are normal. It’s minute details that you miss.

  489. munchabuncha June 23rd, 2008 at 11:03 pm

Remember how they figured out how Hughes needed glasses? He couldn’t see the signs. Betemit was being talked about for getting Lasik surgery.

I don’t have anything against them having to wear glasses, but you would think that they have medicals that include being able to read an eye chart. Is it denial or vanity or what that would cause someone who can’t see well to think they don’t need glasses?

Rebecca, I bet you figured it out for yourself that you needed glasses. Once you couldn’t see things clearly it had to be a clue.

  491. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 11:05 pm

Watching highlights from the M’s/Mets game. A few things.

*Felix gave the Alex clap as he rounded first
*Hope Felix is okay, they carried him off like Wang
*Cairo’s wearing #13. lol. Guess #2 was taken.

  492. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 14) June 23rd, 2008 at 11:07 pm

    Hey now, I didn’t know I needed glasses until I was 17.

Apparently neither did CJ, his mom took him to get eyes fitted for contacts since then it’s line drive central so far.

  493. Scorpio June 23rd, 2008 at 11:07 pm

Just caught King Felix’s grand slammy and his reaction after the Beltran spike on Sportscenter. The kid’s a real gamer. New found respect for the King.

  494. Deegan June 23rd, 2008 at 11:08 pm

I’d still take santana after tonight.

  495. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 11:09 pm

munchabuncha: Actually, I had no idea until I had to get my eyes screened for my rivers’ permit.

The thing was, my eyesight going SPLAT was really really gradual.

It really wasn’t until freshman year of university that I realized I couldn’t see the blackboard, even when sitting in the front row and my professor’s handwriting wasn’t that small.

I won’t get contacts, because I’ve had bad experiences with things getting in my eye, but I think I might eventually persue Lasik.

  496. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 11:12 pm

Santana’s going after the All Time Home Run Record.

That would be great, except that he’s a pitcher.

  497. Nick in SF June 23rd, 2008 at 11:12 pm

“I had no idea until I had to get my eyes screened for my rivers’ permit.”

Is that just for the Hudson or does it cover the Harlem and East rivers too?

  498. ERâ„¢ (The Last Yankee Fanâ„¢) June 23rd, 2008 at 11:13 pm

    Sux lost tonight.

Does that mean Yanks will try to lose tomorrow to keep pace ?

  499. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 11:14 pm

    Rebecca,

What do you need a river’s permit for? You got a raft? Kayak?

  500. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 11:14 pm

Rebecca, do they make you get a “river’s permit” in NY? Those politicians will do any thing to chisel money out of people.

  501. mark June 23rd, 2008 at 11:14 pm

Anyone who doesn’t believe that ESPN is the Red Sox’s bitch. When they announced the number one web gem (Mike Lowell) they said it could have been the Dbacks 3rd baseman’s play too but they picked Lowell. Meanwhile the Dbacks play saved the damn game for the Dbacks. Lowell’s was just a good catch.

    Damn ESPN.

  502. DFox June 23rd, 2008 at 11:16 pm

whozat, that’s better at least, but we still need to get Posada to the top.

  503. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 11:16 pm

Heh. My keyboard doesn’t always work right.

Actually, my N and E key have turned translucent. Apparently, I write too much.

  504. mark June 23rd, 2008 at 11:16 pm

Something good happened for the Yankees. ER’s going to have trouble sleeping tonight.

  505. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 14) June 23rd, 2008 at 11:17 pm

Here was the story on CJ Henry

Henry isn’t ruling out basketball. He’ll have to make another decision next fall, and his fate will largely depend on how he performs on the field in 2008.

And he’s hopeful this will be his breakout baseball season because of his improved eyesight. Late last season he finally went to the eye doctor, something he said his mother had been asking him to do for weeks, and the doctor gave him contacts to try.

“The last month of the season I started seeing the ball a whole lot better,” he said. “It was like night and day. Before I would see the ball coming, but I couldn’t see the laces, the spin of the ball. With the contacts I could see the spin. I was picking it up a whole lot better. Everything seemed more natural.

Maybe that’s why he hit .333 (17-for-51) in 16 games in August, easily his best month of the year. In his eyes, he’s going to carry that over to next season, when he will be playing either the outfield or second base for Class-A Tampa, back in the organization he feels is his baseball home.

Henry said, “I really didn’t want to go in the first place.”

Sine then he has 100 % commited to baseball.

  506. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 11:19 pm

    Mark,

I saw the 3B snag Manny’s liner on ESPNews.

But you’re right about the first part.

That’s okay. Let them enjoy their 15 minutes of fame. This is a blip on the radar compared to how the Yankees have dominated the game for almost a century.

  507. Scorpio June 23rd, 2008 at 11:20 pm

    Two facts:

ESPN is Red Sox’s bitch as Mark wrote

    and

Don Imus is a blatant racist. He should shut his pie-hole.

  508. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 11:20 pm

(I haven’t been kayaking since summer camp, but I miss it sooo much. )

I’m actually pretty good with a paddle, and I mean that in a non-innuendo sense.

I once went with my friend to Central Park. It was about 100F on the day, so we decided to rent a row boat to cool ourselves off a little bit. He tried rowing and wasn’t too good, so I asked him to let me have at it, and of course, he sees my 5’3″, 115 frame and thinks “there is NO way you can do this”, but then I take the paddles, and I’m rowing all over the pond. He was so astounded…I can only throw a baseball 26 mph, but I can work my way around a row boat! And a kayak, for that matter!

….not that you actually needed to know that.

  509. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 11:20 pm

At least when I make typing mistakes, they are easy to spot, because they make absolutely no sense. Rebecca’s errors are more fun because you can do something with them, as three people have discovered. Not really sure that it’s the old “Great minds….” thing, though.

  510. munchabuncha June 23rd, 2008 at 11:21 pm

I know eyesight loss can be gradual, but these guys get medicals all the time. I know my son and daughter both found out they needed glasses from a regular medical exam.

I am so tired of ESPeeN being so overly and overtly Boston favoring. They have blown their reputations over it, yet what other choices are there for sports networks? YES and the Mets have their networks, but I don’t think they are nationwide.

  511. jw June 23rd, 2008 at 11:21 pm

quite a couple of funny posts here tonight! keep up the good work lads

  512. Nick in SF June 23rd, 2008 at 11:23 pm

GreenBeret7, since the Yanks are off, I thought I would try out my new, youth-demographic-oriented style of humor: making fun of typos!

You and mel are free to use that excuse too.

  513. Scorpio June 23rd, 2008 at 11:23 pm

I actually like SNY, they cover the Yanks alot and pretty fair coverage. The YES channel other than pre & post game content have no daily news shows like SNY does.

  514. Marc from Portland Maine June 23rd, 2008 at 11:25 pm

    Rebecca,

Go for the Lasic. I had it done in Montreal in ’02 before the FDA allowed it here. I went in with almost 40 -60 and came out with 20 -15. I leveled at about 20 -25 in a month but it was worth it.

They say it’s pain free and that true, but it’s the most uncomfortable operation I can remember.

  515. Don Vito A. Bellamo June 23rd, 2008 at 11:25 pm

That’s what you get when you try to make fun of a writer’s typos.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told a friend ‘write now I’m tryna right’ over IM. Seriously, I can’t!

  517. mel June 23rd, 2008 at 11:26 pm

    Definitely same wavelength, though…

  518. thunderfangabe June 23rd, 2008 at 11:27 pm

brandon, you weren’t in trenton tonight, right? it was an amazing play by a-jack catching it just centimeters from the grass. very impressive.

  519. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 11:27 pm

Nick, unless they are trolls, or somebody that picks at spelling errors, it’s not something I normally do. If I did, that means I’d have to type more and, the way I type, that’s a wide open invitation to ridicule. That one was just too easy to pass up. I appreciate the use of your excuse, though. It will surely come in handy.

  520. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 23rd, 2008 at 11:28 pm

Mark: Yeah, my mother had it and it worked fairly well…

It’s something I’m considering, but to be honest, I don’t play sports (trust me, this is a blessing for most of humanity), and I’m pretty okay with the glasses for now.

So in the future, yeah, I’ll probably do it. Just not today :)

  521. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 11:32 pm

LMaO@ Rebecca’s “tryna right”. Mel, I’m not sure you need to be checking on my wave lengths. It gets scary in there.

  522. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 14) June 23rd, 2008 at 11:32 pm

Can someone tell me about Juan Miranda defensively how is he doing in AAA. I see offensively in his last 37 AB he’s batting .486

  523. munchabuncha June 23rd, 2008 at 11:34 pm

I wonder if Youkilis will be able to play tomorrow night. It was amazing how fast that swelled up, but that is sensitive tissue. An eye like that could negatively affect his depth perception, so it didn’t surprise me about him being taken out of the game.

Sadly no, I’ve been meaning to go next month. GB told me shoestringer the same play Reggie saw in ST.

  525. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 11:36 pm

“Can someone tell me about Juan Miranda defensively”

I haven’t seen him, but his rep is that he’s not so good with the glove. I can’t imagine that’s magically changed.

    he’s also another lefty bat.

  526. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 11:37 pm

Brandon, I have no idea. 0 errors in 23 games at first, 10 assists and 174 putouts and 14 DP. Rgf is 8.00

  527. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 14) June 23rd, 2008 at 11:40 pm

    Rgf 8.00 that’s quite good :?

  528. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 11:43 pm

One thing I’ve seen looking at Miranda’s offensive stats is that his walks are way up and strikeouts are way down. Hopefully this will be an ongoing trend.

  529. Dloc June 24th, 2008 at 12:10 am

Miranda is a horrendous fielder guys
