That all-important Supermodel voting district must be reporting!

    :)

    What about Giambi at DH?

  3. TurnTwo June 23rd, 2008 at 3:07 pm

Giambi was actually a 1B on the ballot. Matsui was the team’s designated DH, and i think he was second at my last glance (although i dont know the new numbers).

  4. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13) June 23rd, 2008 at 3:07 pm

    talk about overrated

  5. whozat June 23rd, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Giambi’s on as a 1B, losing to Youkilis and Morneau.

it’s ridiculous that Ortiz is second in overall votes when he hasn’t even played for a month.

it’s also ridiculous that Jeter’s leading in votes, when he’s not even really having an all-star caliber season at all. Not that I could point to another SS doing much better…

  6. Francis The Praying Mantis June 23rd, 2008 at 3:13 pm

Jeter is doing his best daivd eckstein impression this season.

  7. Tiki June 23rd, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Not bad for “the most over rated” player in baseball. Do you think if the players were doing the voting that Jeter wouldn’t have gotten the nod – after the same 500 players who voted him over rated voted him the player they would most like to build a team around.
I hope Mariano gets the nod as closer.

  8. saucY June 23rd, 2008 at 3:18 pm

unreal how many votes ortiz has… actually the whole thing is such a mess i don’t even know where to begin…

  9. 86w183 June 23rd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Michael Young of Texas is having a superb season at SS. Papi has the power numbers over Matsui despite missing as much as he has.

    It’s a pretty decent argument (.323 7 34 vs .252 13 43).

My guess is Jeter, ARod, Rivera and possibly Mussina make the team. Too much competition at 1B for Giambi.

  10. Eric Haskell June 23rd, 2008 at 3:34 pm

These are a couple weeks old, but this is who I voted for:
    1B – Jason Giambi
    2B – Ian Kinsler
    SS – Michael Young
    3B – Alex Rodriguez
    C – Joe Mauer
    OF – Josh Hamilton
    Manny Ramirez
    Milton Bradley
    DH – Hideki Matsui

You can click on my name to see my reasoning if you’d like.

This is pretty much why I never watch the all-star game. What a great first-baseman perennial all-star David Ortiz is.

At least it’s a few days off for most of the lineup.

  12. Global Warming June 23rd, 2008 at 3:35 pm

You know whats a bigger disgrace than Jeter having most votes overall?

It’s that Jason Varitek will be starter at C.

  13. Global Warming June 23rd, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Nevermind I see Mauer finally took the lead, thank god.

  14. Jeremy June 23rd, 2008 at 3:38 pm

At least Girardi won’t have to take 5 shortstops to make sure Jeter gets on the team and no one is slighted.

  15. 86w183 June 23rd, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Eric—- Giambi over Youkalis? That’s pretty partisan. Giambi has four more homers (17 to 13) but five fewer RBI (47 to 42) and a much lower B.A. (.305 to .271).

Youkalis is also vastly superior defensive with only one error to four for Giambi and twice as many assists.

I started out doing my research to fill out a fair All-Star ballot; then, when I saw how many Sawx players were leading and threatening to infest our fine Stadium, I decided to go completely homer and vote for just about every one of our guys on all my other ballots. Fortunately, everybody on the team save Cano and Melky have been putting up all star numbers lately (Ok. Not Jeter, but he’s gotta be there for this thing. He’s Derek Freakin’ Jeter. He gets the “respect” vote.), so I’ve been somewhat justified in doing so.

“Eric—- Giambi over Youkalis? That’s pretty partisan.”

it’s debatable, but i’d take Giambi. better OBP OPS and doesn’t look like he should be doing ads for garbage cans.

  18. MoBoy June 23rd, 2008 at 4:04 pm

THis All-Star reminds me how fans vote for the wrong people for the wrong reasons.Just like how:

*Roberto Alomar was beaten this year in the All-Time Rawlings Gold Glove award by Joe Morgan.

*How Ortiz beat Youkalis for 1st base last year in the All Star even though he didn’t even play much in first base.

*How Rod Carew beat Roberto Alomar for second(even though he played 1/3 of he’s career in center) for the All Latino century team.

*How Cepeda lost to Albert Pujos for 1st base in the All-Latino century team.

This fan voting is BS if it’s for the All-Star or other voting. They need to stop letting fans vote for stuff its crazy that overrated Jeter can be better then A-Rod.Ortiz only hit good in May why is he so high on voting.

I don’t pay attention to fan voting anymore. It’s cazy.

  19. Joe June 23rd, 2008 at 4:32 pm

It is what it is…most of the time it works, some times it doesn’t. Jeter isn’t having a great year, Papi hasn’t played in what seems like forever, let’s call it a wash and enjoy the festivities, eh?

    Who has the better OPS?

how bad is the ford commercial where jeter plays a salesman? Guy is the worst athlete actor ever…worse than Willy “Its a lot of meat” Randolph

  22. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 5:21 pm

86w183, exactly how is Michael Young having a “superb season” He’s hitting .277 with 6 homers and 38 RBI and SLG pct of .399 and OBP of .330. There doesn’t appear to be any difference in his numbers and Jeter’s.

  23. GreenBeret7 June 23rd, 2008 at 5:26 pm

MoBoy, Carew didn’t play center field after moving from second base.  He moved to first base. His only outfield experience was a third of an inning in left field.

  24. michael June 23rd, 2008 at 5:28 pm

giambi should start. yank fans should stuff ballot

  25. munchabuncha June 23rd, 2008 at 6:00 pm

The All-Star balloting is just a popularity deal over who is really deserving.

Think about how A-Rod was hurt for a good length of time, and is still coming in high. Posada as well, even though he won’t be tops, he is high among catchers.

The bandwagon fans help push the RS players over the top. It should be called something different than the All-Stars, its more like the Popular Crowd than anything else.

  26. Eric Haskell June 23rd, 2008 at 6:34 pm

“Eric—- Giambi over Youkalis? That’s pretty partisan.”

Giambi has the higher OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+ and HR.

The only two stats Youkilis beats Giambi in are RBI – one of the most overrated stats in baseball – and batting average, which Giambi’s extra BB more than make up for (and therefore the higher OBP).

  27. YankeesLuv June 23rd, 2008 at 10:28 pm

As much as I love Jeter, how the heck does he have the most votes in the AL? Well at least it’s not a Red Sox player.

  28. 86w183 June 23rd, 2008 at 10:38 pm

I stand corrected on Young, he WAS having a superb season. In his last eleven games he’s 5-for-48 with no homers and six RBI, dropping his average more than 30 points.

I stand by Youkilis having the better year than Giambi. I don’t care what your little league coach told you, walks do not balance out hits. and Giambi only has 11 more walks.

Youkilis also has more hits (24), runs (8) and doubles (7) but I guess those stats don’t count either. And you have to consider defense and there it’s not even close.

I guess since RBI is an overrated stat we won’t see you criticizing guys who have poor RISP batting averages, huh?

  29. Ron June 23rd, 2008 at 11:29 pm

Jeter’s having a rather pedestrian season, but numbers don’t really matter much to the All-Star voters. Hence Ken Griffey Junior’s upcoming elextion.

  30. StandingO'Neil June 24th, 2008 at 12:47 am

86w18….get with the times man, sites such as baseball prospectus and your redsox guru Bill James would even tell you batting average and RBI’s are dying stats. Giambi with a higher OBP and slugging percentage is clearly having the better offensive season than Youkilis. Now granted Youkilis is having a very very good season, but Giambi has been better offensively. If you want to include defense then go ahead, but I don’t know how much that makes a difference in an all-star game.

The main objective for a hitter is to not make out and get on base. Giambi does it at a better rate than Youkilis, hence the better offensive season.

  31. 86w183 June 24th, 2008 at 8:10 am

The object of the game (offensively) is scoring runs. Thus scoring and driving in runs are the most important stats in the game. OBP is overrated, expecially at power positions whereguys (like Giambi) are lucky to score from second on a double.

Answer me this… Player A goes one for four with a Grand Slam. Player B goes 4-for-4 with two doubles and two singles but neither scores nor drives in a run. Who had the better game? OPS junkies would say Player B, and they’d be wrong.

Bill James is full of crap and certainly isn’t my guru.. I grew up in the Bronx and attended the Mick’s last game at the Stadium (a loss to Luis Tiant and Cleveland).

  32. Bah June 24th, 2008 at 10:20 am

Bill James is about things you can control. OPS is about having a big sample size, not individual games. I don’t know the math, but over a longer run, if this is the ratio you go buy, the guy with two doubles and two singles every game will end up with more runs/RBIs than the guy who hits a HR every game.

Wow, I was just reading the article over on MLB.com. That seemed extremely bias toward the Red Sox. Kinda pissed me off

  34. LadyBug626 June 24th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

“how bad is the ford commercial where jeter plays a salesman? Guy is the worst athlete actor ever…worse than Willy “Its a lot of meat” Randolph”

The worst BY FAR is Joe Torre on a surfboard for All State.

Not too far behind is the car commercial with Mets C Brian Schneider. He says something like “I may squat for a living, but the competitors don’t know squat about cars like [car company name]“. :(
