I read the Pavano thing today. As for giving him a shot versus "an Arroyo-type," my answer is "what's option C?"

During all the Santana hoopla last winter, many said he was the best pitcher in all of baseball.
Then there were those skeptics that wondered why he was mostly shut down last September and told to lessen his use of his slider.
I suggest that this weighed enough on Cashman's mind with the Steinbrenners eventually joining him.
It becomes more evident as time goes by that stopping the Santana talks was the right thing to do courtesy of the help of Twins GM Bill Smith and his greed. Would his one win differential in his won/loss record have been a difference maker for the Yankees ?
Would the run support the Yankees offered for April-May make his record any better especially with all the HR's he gives up ?
Santana's career basically peaked two years ago and although he's still a very good pitcher, he is not the best in the games and at this stage, approaching his declining years.
$28 million per with a long term contract ? Nope ..... not this guy.

Would you give him a shot in August/September instead of signing an “Arroyo-type” at the trade deadline or just cut losses and move on?

Give bubble boy a shot. Because he is freeand better than Arroyo if ...well you know. :?

Put down your coffee before reading this......

NY Post reporting that Pavano might be ready to pitch for the Yanks before Phil Hughes. The question is whether he would be welcome in the clubhouse.

He skyrocketed through the system last year because of need, and briefly overachieved at the major league level. when we left him out there this year to start, he looked scared and tentative.

of course i'm a huge Ian Kennedy believer. this "he's no better than a #4" is another wonderful piece of wisdom passed around here by people who read one line off some scouting report on some website and now think they're Damon F'n Oppenheimer because of it. he needs to better fine tune his stuff in order to be successful in the majors, and now honestly DOES not time in AAA to do it. he's still got plenty of time to prove the Yanks either right or wrong. i'm rooting for him.

So who's spot would IPK take ? The only person I would consider bumping right now would be Rasner, but he is up here and doing well and that is MUCH more than can be said about IPK this year. Giese has been awesome and unless he complete implodes, you have to ride that "wave" out, right ?

Randy, it is on ESPN, which means its on the second "nation" network. Take it with a grain of salt.

Anything that comes out now means nothing. If the Yankees pull out of bidding for him, then they saw something they didn't like, and it has nothing to do with the pricetag. This isn't something that comes with the heavy tax that funds the Rays and all other smaller market teams.

from espn: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3457855

-The Texas Rangers and Cincinnati Reds have joined the Oakland Athletics in a bidding feud for the services of Dominican pitching prospect Michael Inoa, the crown jewel of the pool of Latin American players

-Inoa, 16, at 6 feet 7 and 210 pounds, is a right-hander with a repertoire consisting of a 93-mph fastball, a changeup and a curveball."

- at least seven teams were ready to give Inoa a bonus of more than $3 million, but many of them, including the New York Yankees, pulled out of the race as the price for the young ace went up.

-----------------------------

so the yankees have just had two cincinnati pitchers from latin america shut them down in the past week, and now the reds, a small market team, is among the favorites of getting the top latin american pitcher?

i said a few days ago that rookie cincinnati starters look different than rookie yankees starters and wondered if the yankees were doing enough in latin america to sign starters.

their pulling out of the bidding makes no sense on the surface because they have vastly more resources than cincinnati.

there must be more to this story. if not ,there's something wrong with how the yankees are signing pitchers in latin america. how can oakland, cincinnati, and the rangers outbid the yankees?

I've been following Chad Jennings comments and info on Brett Gardner....it seems like he is ready to come up and is really fast and could give us a real base stealing threat....does anyone have a good scouting report on him...he is batting .295 with 29 SB's....can he be like Ellsbury for us....what is his ceiling....it just seems with our position player prospects (Cano and Melky) the last few years that scouts and executives don't see them as being real good and then they come up and our better than expected...what else does Gardner have to do...I think its time to maybe platoon him with Melky and see what we have....also it just seems that all baseball executives ask for more if they are making a trade with the Yankees b/c if the trade works out to be bad for their team the attention they will get over it may get them fired...I mean we can't even make a trade for a lefty reliever.....things have changed.....
