Peter Abraham
June

Good signing he has some big upside if Nardi works his mechanics could add 3-4 more mph. This could be a very good move for the future.

  2. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Aww, my brother, Central Florida student, will be disappointed ;)

  3. Joe

High cieling kid, has a LOOOONG way to go though…even more so than most HS pitchers.

  4. jason

Does Bleich come on board relatively quickly now that he is done in the CWS? I would imagine he needs to get some innings after the injury. Richardson sounds like he has some nice upside.

    Barry Melrose to coach lightning.

Wouldn’t that be a little like, I don’t know, John Kruk managing the Seattle Mariners?

    Or something?

  6. whozat

“Does Bleich come on board relatively quickly now that he is done in the CWS?”

I’d assume so. Right now he’s an unemployed kid with nothing to do :-)

By signing he gets moolah and he can move out of his parents’ basement. Chicks dig Yankee prospects WAAAAAY more than college grads who live with their folks.

  7. Bad Scooter

Not really Rebecca. Melrose was the coach of the LA kings for quite awhile when Gretzky was there, coached them to the Stanley Cup Finals.

  8. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Bad Scooter: Oh, really? I didn’t know that! (b) Ignore me then!

man – one guy i would’ve been ok with the Yankees not signing :(

GO UCF… but Yankees are more important

gayle: Just sent you a response :)

  12. Francis The Praying Mantis

this kid should start friday, he is clearly better than ponson.

  13. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13)

Whozat do the Texas Rangers have another Edison Volquez in the wings ? this kid is hitting 99 mph

    20 yr. old Neftali Perez

    K9 10.33 8O

  14. TKinDC

bad trade proposals – on the FAN

it is going to be a long hot summer.

  15. JoeT 28 in 09!! MO FOR CY YOUNG!!

TK – did you hear the guy before that suggested we get Ichiro AND Bedard for Melky, Cano, and Kennedy??

  16. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13)

I wonder if Kennedy can get us that Neftali kid w/ more in a package :?

  17. whozat

“Whozat do the Texas Rangers have another Edison Volquez in the wings ? this kid is hitting 99 mph”

Low A ball isn’t really “the wings”

I’m sure he’s a very good prospect. Look around for prospect rankings if you’d like to know more.

  18. Guiseppe Franco

You would think Bleich should be a quick sign but that’s not necessarily the case because his agent is Scott Boras.

Obviously, he’ll sign eventually, and he’s got nearly two months to do so – but we all know how Boras is when it comes down to deadlines. He always seems to get it done later rather than sooner.

The same argument can be made for Cole. He’ll sign, but it might not happen until the deadline is upon us.

I’d like to see Bleich pitching in Staten Island ASAP because he missed a lot of time this season and he needs to get his innings up.

  19. whozat

“I wonder if Kennedy can get us that Neftali kid w/ more in a package”

Targeting a 20 year old kid in low-A ball?

    1) if he’s good, WHY would the Rangers give him up now?

    2) the Yankees have plenty of high-upside arms that are far away from the bigs. It’s the strength of the system.

  20. AlbanyYankee

Has there been anymore talk about Mike and the Mad Dog going their separate ways? There was some mention of it and a linked article last week. That’d be a real shock if it were to happen.

  21. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13)

Targeting a 20 year old kid in low-A ball?

    1) if he’s good, WHY would the Rangers give him up now?

I know and he really is having a good year but they did trade Volquez. So I’m just thinking.

    2) the Yankees have plenty of high-upside arms that are far away from the bigs. It’s the strength of the system.

You wouldn’t like trying to Fleece somebody Whozat ? I mean it would need to be an under the radar type deal. What could the Yankees take from Texas and then throw this kid in as an add in. Or could Juan Miranda land something like him. Don’t think so much about it Whozat I’m trying to fleece a team here. :)

  22. CB

Neftali Feliz (not perez) is one of the most promising pitching prospects in baseball. He has fantastic stuff and is having a very good year. People were high on him coming into the season and he’s had a terrific year. As long as he stays healthy he could wind up as one of the top prospects in the game. He has that kind of potential.

Texas has an absolutely fantastic farm system. Very good balance between hitting and pitching. The pitching is especially good – Perez, Michael Main, Blake Beaven, and some others have very good arms. Most of the talent is at the lower minor league level but its very good.

That’s why they decided to trade Volquez – they felt that their system was heavy in pitching and they could use more position players.

  23. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13)

For you die hard prospect watchers I forgot to say

DSL Yankees 2 beat DSL Dbacks 14-1 on Saturday

Eduardo Sosa: 2 HR, 6 RBI
Kevin De Leon: 2 for 5 2B, 3 RBI (Yes BA reported wrong)

  24. Russell NY

Brett Gardner yesterday, making it look easy:

    Brett Gardner: 0 for 1, 3 R, 4 BB, 2 SB

  25. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13)

CB what not named Jesus Montero, Tabata, Almonte or Jackson can the Yankees trade to land Neftali Feliz * ?

  26. John in Ohio

Here’s hoping that Giese gets another start to show what he’s got. A journeyman minor-leaguer, and nice guy by all accounts. He’s throwing the best that he ever has, and was in a great spot until Ponson became available (ironically, due to being a jerk). Too bad he threw that DP ball away.

  27. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13)

    CB you there ?

  28. hmmm

“He’s throwing the best that he ever has, and was in a great spot until Ponson became available (ironically, due to being a jerk). ”

he’s still in a great spot. at least for another couple of weeks.

he is the 5th starter. Ponson is the 6th starter.

Ponson is going to have to throw a VERY good game (or Giese is going to have to throw a very bad game) to get another start.

  29. Russell NY

Gardner > Ellsbury. You hear that Sox fans?

  30. pat

    New All-Star counts are in-

Jeter and A-Rod still in the lead for SS and 3rd. Mauer passes Varitek and Pedroia and Youkilis are losing ground to Kinsler and Morneau.

  31. CB

    Brandon,

The yankees cannot trade for neftali feliz. trust me on that. he’s not going to get traded anywhere.

The much maligned john daniels has made a commitment to building with young players – young pitching in particular. I think they just got sick of always being a hit first no pitching team. They’ve already acquired a strong core of prospect arms and Feliz is front and center.

He’s the kind of guy they’ll try to build a rotation around – not a guy they’re going to look to trade, especially after dealing volquez.

They’ve got a number of very good young players there. I think they’ll try to trade Milton Bradley to get more high ceiling guys. That’s the direction they’re in right now.

They are going to have a good team in the near future.

  32. whozat

“You wouldn’t like trying to Fleece somebody Whozat ? I mean it would need to be an under the radar type deal.”

Brandon…Texas isn’t stupid. They KNOW what they have in Feliz. It’s pointless to even be thinking about this kind of trade because it will never, ever happen.

They traded Volquez–after several seasons of big-league struggles–for a guy who’s a legit MVP candidate, young and controllable.

  33. whozat

    “Mauer passes Varitek”

I’m glad about that…that was really ridiculous. I’ve been voting for Mauer, he’s having a heck of a year and really deserves the nod.

  34. John in Ohio

    hmmm

Glad to hear that. I assumed that Ponson had bumped him.

  35. Russell NY

Who here would be unhappy if the Yankees traded for Bedard and picked up Teixiera in the offseason?

Rotation that would look like: Wang, Bedard, Joba, Pettitte, Rasner/Giese/IPK/Hughes.

    Night righty-lefty-righty combo there.

  36. TKinDC

Everyone wants Bedard except for the LoHud murderer’s row of CB, SJ and Brandon.

Should be interesting – was Mazilli the coach of the O’s while Bedard was there? He should be able to give them a heads up on his make-up. (which seems to be everyone’s gripe)

  37. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13)

He’s the kind of guy they’ll try to build a rotation around – not a guy they’re going to look to trade, especially after dealing volquez.

    Well that sucks.

They traded Volquez–after several seasons of big-league struggles–for a guy who’s a legit MVP candidate, young and controllable.

Great now they wise up. ;?

  38. Russell NY

“LoHud murderer’s row of CB, SJ and Brandon”

Well put. But as we have seen from ARod, the big bombers will drive you to the postseason but the little guys will bring home the bacon ^^^

  39. JoeT 28 in 09!! MO FOR CY YOUNG!!

Thank god Tek isn’t winning anymore. Posada should get mad that people even mention Tek in the same sentence as him – it’s not even close. What is “Captan Tek” hitting now? 225?? that’s all-star worthy!

  40. Pete V

didn’t Bedard have issues dealing with Baltimore media? Don’t think NY media would be any easier for him…

  41. berniewilliams

    bedard!

  42. TurnTwo

count me in on passing on Bedard.

  43. Russell NY

“What is “Captan Tek” hitting now? 225?? that’s all-star worthy!”

Too many bandwagon Red Sox fans jumped aboard that voting. It is an embarrassment if their captain is even allowed to watch the AS game.

  44. Patrick (the good one)

“Who here would be unhappy if the Yankees traded for Bedard and picked up Teixiera in the offseason?”

I would be very happy with Bedard and Tex on this team. I doubt either will be on it until next season though. Rotation of Wang, Bedard, Chamberlain, Pettitte, Hughes would be outstanding.

  45. berniewilliams

he can handle the media fine if he just isnt a puss

  46. Russell NY

The Red Sox backup catcher has a higher average than Varitek lol (Kevin Cash in 76 AB’s)

  47. berniewilliams

varitek is not a top 10 catcher in the AL this year. I would vote moeller over tek

  48. Phil

    I don’t want Bedard, either.

  49. Mitch

I think anyone would like to have Bedard. The question is the price. In addition to the “make-up” issue, he is hurt a lot. He has one season with more than 30 starts, and he’s never reached 200 innings.

I don’t think anyone would pass on him, but at the same time, I don’t think he’s worth what the M’s would ask for him.

  50. saucY

toss up on Bedard. I guess it depends on price…

  51. berniewilliams

Does anybody know what solid pitchers are going to be free agents in 09

  52. Patrick (the good one)

“didn’t Bedard have issues dealing with Baltimore media? Don’t think NY media would be any easier for him…”

I wouldn’t say he had issues. He just ignored them for the most part and said as little as possible. Its actually quite funny listening to him give an interview after a game.

SJ says he is a bad teamatte. I have no idea about that but if SJ says it I’m sure there is some truth to it. With his talent, though, I wouldn’t care too much about how good a teamatte he is.

The only thing that worries me about Bedard is his injury history. Last season he was on course to win the Cy Young but was shut down because of a sore shoulder/oblique. The Orioles reasoned that the team was out of contention so they wanted to make sure he was healthy but that sounds too much like an excuse to me.

Despite his injury history I’d still love to have him on the Yanks. I doubt it will be this year though because his value is kind of low right now. I think the Mariners will let him play out the rest of the season in the hope he does well then trade him in the offseason.

  53. SJ44

Sure, let’s trade for Bedard. A guy who is worse than Moose when it comes to pitch count. A guy with a chronic hip problem, universally disliked in his own locker room, and among his peers in the game, and hasn’t pitched well all year.

    Makes sense to me.

It will take AJax, Hughes and Betances to even start the conversation with Seattle. They aren’t giving him away and they have to get close to what they gave up in order to trade him. If they don’t, its a double disaster for the Mariners.

I’ll pass. He’s not that good. Go back and look at his entire career. He’s always hurt and always miserable.

The last LH pitcher they brought into NY thinking he would be happy was Randy Johnson. How did that work out?

  54. Confucius

“In addition to the “make-up” issue, he is hurt a lot. He has one season with more than 30 starts, and he’s never reached 200 innings.”

He pitched around 380 innings the last two seasons, his third and fourth in the bigs. Nothing to scoff at.

I’d worry about reports of his competitiveness. Girardi might need to crack the whip on him, and he might chafe at that. But if he gives the team his best, doesn’t let the media get to him, and doesn’t suffer a complete physical breakdown (bigger risk to Sabathia, imo, despite the injury histories), he could be an ace for us.

There’s still risk, though, so the price would have to be right.

  55. Patrick (the good one)

SJ you bring up all good points but you are severely underrating Bedard’s ability. He is a legitimate left-handed ace under 30 years old. He was running away with the Cy Young last year when the Orioles shut him down. He was more than solid in 2006 and so far this year he has a 3.97 ERA, far from terrible. His health is an issue yes but for that kind of talent its a risk I’m willing to take.

I wouldn’t turn down a deal for Bedard based on him being a bad teamatte. Clubhouse chemistry is hugely overrated.

  56. Confucius

“The last LH pitcher they brought into NY thinking he would be happy was Randy Johnson.”

They didn’t bring RJ here “thinking he’d be happy.” They brought him here thinking he’d be able to pitch like the Randy of old. RJ was miserable here, but a 15+ year veteran is more than capable of leaving stuff like that off the field, and his teammates don’t care as long as he wins. He just got old. He still had a good ‘05, but the cold seemed to affect him a lot worse. And by ‘06, his body just broke down to the point where he needed his back medicated to keep pitching. Look at his return to the media-desert of Arizona — it hasn’t exactly been sparkling.

  57. SJ44

    Patrick,

He shut himself down as much as the Orioles shut him down.

    The guy is a dog.

You can’t be an ace if you can’t go to post more than he has in his career.

CC Sabathia is an ace. He goes to post. Eric Bedard has the potential to be an ace but has never done what it takes to attain that status.

There isn’t a pitcher in the game who doesn’t pitch with some kind of soreness. Bedard is a guy who won’t push it.

Two years ago, Chien Ming Wang was hurting bigtime. Yet, he went to post and made his starts, despite the pain.

Its why I thought the Yankees went a bit overboard during arbitration (its a brutal process) with Wang. The guy has more toughness in his little finger than Eric Bedard has in his entire body.

Its why investing in Bedard is so risky and why the Orioles are happy as hell they got rid of him (and got what they got for him).

If the guy was such a pain in the butt in soft media markets like Seattle and Baltimore, can you imagine him in NY?

If it was just one or two people saying rough things about him, I’d overlook it.

But, honest to God, I haven’t talked to one person I know in the game who has anything nice to say about the guy.

Front offices execs, scouts, players, they all say the same thing. Talented, doesn’t push himself, and a bad teammate.

When you get that kind of response from such diverse people around the game, it makes me say, “pass”.

  58. Nick in SF

“Its why I thought the Yankees went a bit overboard during arbitration (its a brutal process) with Wang. The guy has more toughness in his little finger than Eric Bedard has in his entire body.”

He needs to transfer a little of that finger toughness to his feet!

And just to play devil’s advocate, what does the failure of the Randy Johnson experiment have to do with whether or not a Bedard experiment would work? Just because they’re both lefties with prickly personalities?

I think the other reasons to pass on Bedard — that he hasn’t shown any toughness or consistently pitched to his potential and that the price to get him would likely be too high– are more compelling than the RJ-comparison.

  59. 86w183

I haven’t “heard” anmything specific with Bedard, but there just seems to be too much baggage there. Plus I agree with the sentiment that the Mariners don’t want to look foolish by giving up all that they did for this guy only to get far less back when they move him. Still, new GM, new manager so they can clainm innocence on the acquisition.

Sabathia is on a completely different level and would be awesome in pinstripes. Think about opening ‘09 with CC, Wang, Pettite and Joba…. take that Chowda Heads.
