I'm fine with the starters. They've been excellent for the last three weeks, though I can't see Guise keeping that ERA much longer. The LH reliever is the # 1 need on the pitching staff. Just like a RH bat that can play 1B or OF is the biggest need for the lineup.

Good point on Mahay and Affeldt... especially the $$$ Mahay got, but he only got $ 250K more than LaToilet Hawkins.

Either Rasner of Giese will be a long reliever as the season moves on depending upon who emerges from trade or AAA help plus injury returnees.
- Joba is getting stretched out and improving.

- Pettitte has found himself and is the 2nd half pitcher he always has been.

Some glue has been applied. It takes a little time to dry.

The Yanx could have had Mahay or Affeldt who were FA's last winter but they wanted more than their worth.
Look for Cashman to make another pitch for Damaso Marte before the trading deadline of 7/31 and may have a chance to have preliminary talks with the Pirates GM in the next few days.

Damaso Marte, John Grabow, Jimmy Gobble, Ron Mahay, Jeremy Affeldt, Brian Fuentes would all be huge improvements over Billy Traber. Don't know what the price tag would be, but the lack of a quality lefty is a huge issue with me.

Can you suggest a decent LH reliever we can get? I can't think of one. It's not like they come out of thin air.

Great article, Pete. Given that our ace and "the Franchise" are injured, these guys have been great. One very talented rookie, tow arguably over the hill veterans, and two waiver wire old minor leaguers. The horizon looks even brighter with Aceves going to AAA and additional depth from Karstens, Kennedy, Hughes, and maybe Wang if the current starters falter.

It's been fun watching these guys do well. Big kudos to Dave Eiland. Also, Girardi has done a nice job managing the bull pen and spreading out the work.
