Call Goose Gossage, this is a disgrace

Peter Abraham
June

So it seems that Francisco Rodriguez raises his arms in the air when he gets a save. He raises his arms in the air! Imagine the nerve. In the good old days players felt bad when they won so as not to show up opponents.

Something needs to be done about this. Baseball cannot have players celebrating. Thankfully Joba Chamberlain now starts and doesn’t pump his fist as often.

If you’re not checking out Big League Stew on Yahoo!, you should. It’s funny.

Papelbon pumped his fist the other night! Somebody needs to sit him down and give him a talking-to.

  2. Yanker

Papelbon and K-Rod are 10x worse than Joba was. At least Joba didnt kick gatorade containers when he blew the lead earlier this season. Papelbon is worse than youkilis with the crying BS

  3. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    That was a great video

  4. yankee lover

Speaking of KROD heres my thing. He is tremendous, but his act after a K or a save is way over the top. I think he is way beyond what Joba does. Goose was great, and we all love Goose but its the players of today way of doing things. Nothing is worse than football players who make routine tackles or block a pass thron right at them and do some dopey dance.

  5. jerryd

Pete – This is an unrelated question, but do you know who are the expected pitchers for the Yanks-Red Sox series next week? Thanks, Jerry

  6. 27 this year

Joba only does it after big time moments like a huge strikeout to end the inning. Papalbon and K-Rod do it every freakin game they pitch. At least when Joba does it, there is emotion. Papaldush and K-Rod do it when nothing is going on just the end of the game.

    Freakin ESPN

  7. B.J. Cryan

Now back to the Ponson character issue; so he had a little run in with the manager. What’s the big deal? Isn’t the Rapist playing for the LA Lakers?

  8. yankee lover

I think K ROD is awesome. But he is the worst, way over the top, for someone who has won nothing. I love Goose, but its whats the players of today do.
Nothing is worse than the NFL where a guy makes a routine tackle or block a pass thats thrown right at them and do a dance

  9. rb15

In fact, I’m pretty sure Papelbon’s fist pump (or maybe his throwing both arms into the air bit) is part of the Red Sox promo on NESN. Disgraceful! Think of the children!

  10. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

jerry: It looks like Pettitte, Ras, Joba, Moose, but that’s only if I’m counting correctly and Ponson only has the one start.

  11. jennifer

I love the comment that f-rod isn’t showing anyone up, but Joba is.

  12. saucY

“He’s not showing anyone up (a la Joba’s fist pumps/twirls/pirouettes), so it’s fine with me.”

    lol

  13. Fredo Corleone

“But he is the worst, way over the top, for someone who has won nothing.”

Nothing but a World Series, you mean, right????

lets get k-rod in the winter… he and joba can do it together

  15. jennifer

Got this from Mark F’s blog
    http://main.acsevents.org/site.....fId=236776

Former News writer making DH walk
It’s not very common to give plugs for writers from competing papers, but my buddy and yours, Sam Borden, is doing something very interesting tomorrow for a very worthwhile cause.

Sam, who covered the Yanks for the Daily News before me and was the original voice here at Blogging the Bombers, is going to walk from Yankee Stadium to Shea Stadium between the two games of the day-night doubleheader. I’ll be driving the same route in my car, and given that it’s a Friday afternoon in rush hour at the end of June, he may very well beat me there.

Sure, Sam will be using his walk as the basis of his column for the Journal News, but he is also taking donations for his 10-mile walk and donating all of the money to the American Cancer Society. Certainly a noble effort. Click here to read more and for information on making a donation. Sam has already secured more than $5,000 in donations, leaving him less than $1,000 from his goal.

    You guys see this?

  18. Fredo Corleone

“lets get k-rod in the winter… he and joba can do it together”

He’s not going to sign where he can’t close.

  19. TurnTwo

“He’s not going to sign where he can’t close.”

unless you pay him closer money, perhaps.

but then you’d have like $28-30 million tied up between two relief pitchers, albeit the two best in the game.

would be nice to have, but seems a bit excessive.

  20. MikeEff

thanks for the article rebecca- nice stuff. thank god for the moose…

  21. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Who would have thought Mike Mussina would be holding up the rotation this year?

Pettitte’s done well of late, but while he struggled, it was Moose that felt like the only one that would give this team a chance to win.

  22. PJH

I think K-Rod takes it over the top a little bit, but hey, if you want to look like an imbecile, you should be allowed to do so. People looking like morons make for good entertainment.

  23. mel

    Rebecca,

    Great read.

This bothers me though, kind of thumbing his nose at the Yankees at Phil and Ian’s expense (even though he says that they were put in a tough situation):

Instead, Mussina’s 3.96 ERA — lowest among Yankee starters — underscores how wrong everyone was in assuming his career was over and, more importantly, that the Bombers could pin their hopes on rookies Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy.

“I think it’s kind of funny that me and Andy [Pettitte] are the only ones still out there,” Mussina said.

And K-rod!! He’s positively orgasmic out there after a save. He seems to have a really close relationship with the big man upstairs.

  24. bdog375

I think there is quite a difference between being excited and showing another player/team up. There are really only two players that I have seen this year that have appeared to show other teams up, and they are both on the Nats: Lastings Milldge and Elijah Dukes. Their celebrations after a couple of walk off victories this year have not seemed well intentioned.

I saw in either the Super Regionals or CWS where a team cleared the dugout and mobbed home plate on a homerun in the top of the 9th. There was still another half inning to play, the game was not over, and they were all at home plate jumping up and down. I thought that was rude to do to a team that had not even lost yet. Does anyone know what game I am talking about? Might have been LSU.

Anyways, clearly Joba disrespects the whole game like none other (cough, cough, sarcasm)

  25. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Our Jevenile Deliquent made a hussle play on a flyball to Right center just now, he had no chance on it rushed back and the ump took awhile to see if he came down w/ it. :D

  26. mel

K-rod gets the job done, but I think I’d puke if I had to watch him fall off the mound like a violent drunk after every pitch.

  27. Francis The Praying Mantis

    goose gassage is a Dick

  28. jennifer

Geez Met fans are big babies calling up asking Mad Dog why he isn’t ripping the Yankees that much. Please losers give me a break!!

  29. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

He flied out to LF (he’s pulling the ball)

  30. whozat

“asking Mad Dog why he isn’t ripping the Yankees that much.”

Ripping them for what? Lack of hitting with RISP? It’s a problem that’s existed for ages now. It’s not like there’s much more to say.

  31. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Brandon: Excellent!

  32. Blargh

Yaknow what would be amazingly awesome/heretical? Imagine a stage being set up somewhere underneath the outfield. After a save, a portion of the outfield would slide open for the stage to rise up out of the ground…with a band all set up for an impromptu concert.

Now that’ll be a way to celebrate a save.

  33. Yanker

Chris Russo admitting that he is a anti Yankee jinx. He says they are out, and they immediatly turn around

  34. whozat

“After a save, a portion of the outfield would slide open for the stage to rise up out of the ground…with a band all set up for an impromptu concert.”

Screw that. Just detonate the pitching mound. A column of searing flame would truly set things off.

  35. Yanker

I believe the Sox-Yankee series is

    Thursday-Pettitte
    Friday-Rasner
    Saturday-Joba (im going)
    Sunday-Mussina

  36. Fredo Corleone

“K-rod gets the job done, but I think I’d puke if I had to watch him fall off the mound like a violent drunk after every pitch.”

With the possible exception of that asswipe Foulke in ‘04, you may not find a relief pitcher who had a better SINGLE postseason than Krod had in ‘02….at age 20.

  37. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Well, as long as Moose doesn’t pitch to Manny, there’s no reason we can’t take three of four!

  38. Confucius

Dog’s killing me with the fishbowl stuff.

  39. Rishi

Not sure if you have seen Gameday lately – but they just upgraded it to pretty muc 3-d…very cool. With the videos etc it a great way to follow a game

  40. MikeEff

    lapdog-

“i want to douse all subway series sprit this weekend”

i’m turning this crap off. it makes you actually miss francesa

  41. Blargh

“Screw that. Just detonate the pitching mound. A column of searing flame would truly set things off.”

    Ooh, that works too
How about the bases too? Make it a majestic fire works display.

  42. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

    Scott Bittle Q&A and more

  43. yankeefan

What do you guys make of the Brian Fuentes speculation. He has a 2.05 ERAS pitching in Colorado, and best of all he’s a lefty that can actually get lefties out. He’s in his walk year. Who is worth giving up to get this deal done?

  44. Yanker

Rockies want the farm for Fuentes

  45. Fredo Corleone

“What do you guys make of the Brian Fuentes speculation. He has a 2.05 ERAS pitching in Colorado, and best of all he’s a lefty that can actually get lefties out. He’s in his walk year. Who is worth giving up to get this deal done?”

Problem is there will be competition for his services, which changes the question from “who is it worth?” to “are you willing to overpay?”.

  46. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

We got Hawkins from Colorado…and yeah. doesn’t entice me.

  47. saucY

what would a guy like Fuentes get in the offseason? i’d guess a farnsworth-like deal from someone…

  48. M. Francessa PTRS 08

    Yankeefan

I’ve heard from a few places that Kennedy could fetch us Fuentes…

I’d do it today if I were the big bald man in charge.

Side Note…You think Cashman could defend himself if we sign Chacon for another go around supposing he decides to pull a “Sprewell” on our slight yet scrappy General Manager?

I’ll tell you that guy in Huston needs a refresher course in Krav Maga hah

  49. Tiki

First let me say Joba’s fist pump didn’t bother me that much. Having said that, the difference with K-Rod and Papelbon is that they are closers – Joba was in the setup position.
More to the point is that there was a time – not so long ago – that it just wasn’t acceptable behavior. It wasn’t only Gossage who said something about it – David Cone and everyone else in the booth (aside from Michael Kay) said it. Besides, Gossage stopped saying anything (after hearing he was being inducted as a Yankee and being reminded that he still works for them) from the Yankees FO.

    This is generational.

Always remember The Mick – he always kept his head down while rounding the bases after a home-run so as not to show up the pitcher.

And BTW, I wish we didn’t have to get guys like Ponson but the pitching staff is hurting. I hope Cashman is able to do something when pitchers become available around the trade deadline but I don’t see it happening except – at least, hopefully – a lefty for the bullpen.
Just a personal opinion – I think players like Ponson and Chacon need help and if their teams don’t want to do it then MLB should step in.

  50. TKinDC

    Brandon –

That Scott Bittle Q&A was awesome – I can’t wait to see the kid in pinstripes now.

  51. Wave Your Hat

While I can think of some games where we had a bad outing from a lefty reliever, I can’t think of any games we lost because we didn’t have a good lefty in the pen. I think we have other needs more pressing than trading for an established lefty reliever. And next year, I would prefer to promote relievers from our farm system and spend the money save on CC and hitting.

  52. Skippy

Thanks for the nice link, Rebecca.

  53. bdog375

saucY, good thought on Fuentes. That is a name that I have not heard come up at all and it does some like a perfect fit.

The pen needs immediate help as in tomorrow. If Fat Sid is consistent he goes 4. Who the hell do they run out there?

  57. Zach in Port Jeff

    Garza working on a no-hitter.

    There, I jinxed it.

THat guy will be Latroy hawkins

  59. jz5178

What Jose Valverde does after a save is a lot worse then what K-Rod does in my opinion.

  60. RJReagan

Maybe Goose wants to mention F-Rod, Millage, and Dukes as examples of bush league behavior in his HOF acceptance speech?

  62. MR YANKEES

I know someone worst then K-Rod and Papelsuck put together Jose Valberde the guy start screaming in the air and i bet he says some curses while hes shoutin and then pound his chest look at some of his saves when we gets them
