So they reschedule it for another night game. Great!
That is going to be one angry clubhouse
MLB should make a rule that get-away games must be day games, except maybe in big series, i.e. yankees-red sox or the subway series.
Unreal. Guess I’ll go to bed.
My wife is amazed that the blog could accurately predict the game being called and the make up date, before it was announced.
I thought the rule was to continue games now at the point they got rained out from, like they did with the orioles last year.
So that is “Yanks have 4 XBH to start game but.. don’t”? This sucks big time by the way. The only upside is our bullpen isn’t depleted for tomorrow now.
mike i think thats only put into effect if it is an offical game
Gotta love MLB’s brilliant scheduling ideas . . .
Yeah why can’t they just suspend the game?
Joe: Just a guess on my part.
Though it’d be really really weird if they read this blog and they saw my…and they…
...nah. not possible.
“So that is “Yanks have 4 XBH to start game but.. don’tâ€? This sucks big time by the way. The only upside is our bullpen isn’t depleted for tomorrow now.”
There is no upside to this situation if the planes are grounded. Everyone is going to be groggy tomorrow.
They should trash the Pittsburgh clubhouse before they leave. lol
Pittsburgh really makes out now. Now they get another night where they’ll actually have fans in their stadium to sell beer/food to.
well, our groggy bullpen will at least be rested.
Why won’t the first 2 innings count towards the make-up game? Is it because it was only two innings? I can never tell why some games get restarted and some don’t.
yanks got screwed for a change. tell the Pitt. owner not to spend the revenue yet.
Moose toast for 5 days for nothing.
now we get giese and ponson and rasner in 3 of the 4 games.
terrible….
should Arod’s hit have been a HR????
would moose be avaliable for relief this weekend?
Aren’t they in Toronto July 10th?
I wasn’t exactly talking about major upside Eugie. But imagine if the bullpen would have had to give us 7 innings this late at night, and Giese and/or Ponson gets shelled early tomorrow?
July 11-13th is the Toronto series.
is anyone as scared as I am about getting swept?
man – all that waiting for nothing…I’d prefer no one gets hurt, but it would be nice if the Yankees had a day game on a get away day for a change (when on the road)...how late do you think they get home tonight?
Sorry, guys, I’m still around. I had typed out my fare-the-wells in the last thread, but was saved by the shamrock.
I’ll still keep posting my lame jokes.
So, too bad about hitting double #400 on Jeter’s birthday, but this is the best scenario. Well, besides calling it an hour earlier.
Hope they get some rest.
For the life of me I can’t understand why the MLB doesn’t step in. As we’ve all complained about at some point, its simply not fair that the Yankees are forced to almost every one of their 27 get away game at night while most other teams play MAYBE 10. Is it no enough that the Yanks pay tens of millions of dollars each year in a luxury tax designed to promote metiocrity?? MLB seriously needs to do soemthi g about this.
Also, think about poor Pete. He’ll be all tuckered out by the time the night cap starts tomorrow.
The officials at MLB are just stupid – mandate day games for get away days but greed and stupidity rule!
So Jeter didn’t score on his birthday?
Tough break!
From George King’s blog in the NY Post:
“As of 8:30, when the Yankees-Pirates game was in a rain delay, Giese was still at the airport. Because the airport was closed, the Yankees didn’t know when their charter would take off.”
So Jeter didn’t score on his birthday?
Tough break!
I’m sure Jeter scored sometime during the 24 hours of his birthday.
Well, since it sounds like the airport is closed, even with their charter it could be a few hours before they get out. Probably arrive in their own homes around 3-ish, I’m guessing, if they’re lucky; maybe later. Then show up at the Stadium around noon for the 2 PM start (I can’t imagine they’ll have BP). Then play two.
You can say that they’re paid very well, and they are, but it doesn’t make them any less tired. No wonder some get cynical.
this is the season from hell
Is there a reason Giese didnt get on a plane this AM of this afternoon?? Maybe they hold him until the game begins to make sure the starter is ok to go??
You can say that they’re paid very well, and they are, but it doesn’t make them any less tired. No wonder some get cynical.
I don’t feel sorry for them at all. Alot of people work a alot worse hours for a lot less money.
However, the human body is the human body no matter how rich you are. It’s unavoidable that they are not gonna be as sharp as they should be this weekend now because of this.
This season everything that could have possibly gone wrong for the Yankees has gone wrong, when you think about it.
And yet we’re still five or six over .500, and third in the WC race.
That’s not too shabby.
“So Jeter didn’t score on his birthday?”
Did they try to send Minka Kelly back to NY early too?
Oh and as a make up for this nonsense, MLB should allow Yankee players to use greenies this weekend.
sorry Bob (the original)), didn’t see you’d beaten me to the punch.
I have a strong feeling that our offense is going to go into slump this weekend since they looked alive tonight
You all see this?
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3462878
Airport in Pittsburgh is open and the team charter is scheduled to leave Pittsburgh at 11:50.
At least it wasn’t a Yankee this time, Rebecca.
Well that’s alright, “Yanker”. Since you already know that, there’s no point in you watching the games or posting here. You’re now free to troll the other boards.
Airport in Pittsburgh is open and the team charter is scheduled to leave Pittsburgh at 11:50.
Where’d you get that?
That’s not too bad if that’s the case. What’s it about an hour flight?
“This season everything that could have possibly gone wrong for the Yankees has gone wrong, when you think about it.”
a) You act as if other teams haven’t had problems.
b) with the highest payroll the yankees should be able to deal with problems better than any other team in the majors.
c) don’t let either one of those facts make you feel less like a victim.
11.50…well, you know, even if they played the game, you’d think the charter flight would probably be leaving at a similar time.
GB: Indeed.
“I have a strong feeling that our offense is going to go into slump this weekend since they looked alive tonight”
Way to be positive!
James: Other teams have had problems, and some a lot, lot worse than the Yankees—like Seattle, for instance. Or the Mets.
But from a Yankees-only perspective…
a) We were hoping Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy would be main stays of our rotation. Neither of them has a win and niether is expected back before August.
b) We lost A-Rod to the 15 day DL and Jorge Posada for nearly the entire month of May, as well as much as April. They are two of our best offensive players.
c) We played a BRUTAL April.
d) We’ve lost our ace, Chien Ming Wang, for probably the season, and Brian Bruney, who had been turning into one of our most solid relievers, to injuries you don’t really hear about, ever.
e) Robinson Canò has gone missing.
f) As has, offensively speaking, Derek Jeter.
g) Hideki Matsui has major knee problems, even if no one admits it.
The list goes on and on.
“This season everything that could have possibly gone wrong for the Yankees has gone wrong, when you think about it.â€
I’m sure the Sox having to deal without Ortiz, Dice K, Schilling, Lowell for a month, Okajima stinking, and Lugo playing like a butcher has been real fun.
No excuses.
If they knew the rain was coming, why did they start the game? We were forced to burn Moose in a 2 inning outing with a huge line of T-Storms coming that they knew would rain out the game before it even started! And not only that, but the entire game is wiped, and we were LEADING. Makes you wonder whether Pittsburgh let it be delayed and called so fast knowing they were going to lose anyway!
This season everything that could have possibly gone wrong for the Yankees has gone wrong, when you think about it.
Don’t start playing the victim.
Tonight had nothing to do with things going wrong for the Yanks. It’s just an example of stupidity and greed that hurts the integrity of the game on the field.
Every team has issues. This isn’t a one man game. You can lose a top player and still win. This team has a 220$ million payroll for christsakes.
Who’s fault is it that the bench stinks?
The pen options are so so?
That rookies were counted on to make 60+ starts?
Pipe down already. Just keep winning.
They probably thought the storm would tail north of Pittsburgh.
It didn’t.
I hear every other team in baseball crying and playing the worlds smallest violin because the Yanks got rained out and have to fly first class charter from Pitt to NY to play baseball in front of 55,000 fans.
Boo Hoo.
But anyone with a computer could have looked at the radar and seen that the line stretched almost along the entire PA border. It wasn’t an isolated t-storm. It was a full fledged line of rain that had just hit Cleveland and was heading right at them.
It’s all about the money, it’s pathetic, but it really is. A sellout against the Yankees and not only does it have to be a night game ot make more money, but they start the game for concessions revenue knowing there’s no way it gets played to 5 innings.
Pittsburgh didn’t call the game. Once the lineup cards are handed in, the umpires control the game,
“We were hoping Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy would be main stays of our rotation. Neither of them has a win and neither is expected back before August.”
Exhibit A as to why we are fighting for the WC spot and not comfortably ahead right now.
I could see one rookie starting pitcher stepping up and being good right away(Joba). I couldn’t see three of them. It just doesn’t happen in baseball.
So, Jeter did his 400th double then. Better to get it against the Mets anyhow
Now MLB controls Mother Nature???
Just when you think you hear it all…..
*didn’t get
I really hope Hughes was terrible because of the injury.
Larry Bird is not getting more attractive with age.
I feel bad for Jay Bilas. It is like he is the only one in the room who knows what he is talking about in regards to the college players.
Taking two tomorrow would make for a pretty cool start to the weekend.
Net fans, (I think there might be four or five left), Douglas-Roberts is a great pick.
“Where’d you get that?”
Would love to say I’m psychic but actually from a flight tracker on the Internet. A little trick I learned when I used to fly 50% of the year for business.
“That’s not too bad if that’s the case. What’s it about an hour flight?”
51 minutes is what it is listed at.
The injury certainly hurt Hughes, but there was a mental issue going on as well.
“The injury certainly hurt Hughes, but there was a mental issue going on as well.”
Mental issue? He’s a rookie who is the youngest person in the majors. Let him breathe a little before we start saying mental issues. Not like he didn’t pitch great in Sept and Oct last yr or anything. Mental issues???
Rebecca, are you meaning a pitching philosophy issue?
Ollie and GB: I’m not sure exactly, but it’s something he said, about the wrong attitude when it came to the strike zone.
I think Phil will be fine. He’s too talented not to be.
Ollie,
Hughes has finally admitted through various media outlets that he pressured out. He’s also looking forward to redeeming himself (my words, not his). I hope he returns to September/October form.
Exactly, Rebecca. He was trying to be too fine and nip at the corners, instead of attacking the strike zone. I can’t swear to it, but, a 21 year old pitcher doesn’t usually make decisions to change pitching philosophies (game plans) without somebody suggesting the change. That would be another pitcher or, most likely pitching coach or instructor during spring training.
I would think a young kid who pitched so well in a pennant race and in a playoff game would get a few starts leeway here especially since he was pitching with a fractured rib. He is very accountable for his poor performance and has never blamed the injury.
Hughes is a monster talent. He is going to eventually be another stud. Patience, my fellow Yankee fans. Patience. One day we will be real glad that we didn’t trade him for aging past their prime pitchers.

The selection of Italian forward Danilo Gallinari could mean the end of David Lee’s Knicks career.
I’m hearing that the Knicks could be working on a deal with the Charlotte Bobcats to acquire point guard Raymond Felton for Lee, who played for Bobcats coach Larry Brown.
Coincidentally, the Bobcats selected Texas point guard D.J. Augustin with the ninth overall pick. Charlotte’s second point was French center Alexis Ajinca.
When Mike D’Antoni coached the Phoenix Suns he gave the front office a the thumbs-down to drafting Lee because he felt that Lee wasn’t a good enough shooter.
The Knicks had spoken to the Memphis Grizzlies about trading Lee and Malik Rose before the draft to acquire the fifth pick.
Ollie: The only thing that worries me about Hughes is his injury history.
If he can stay healthy, I’ve got every belief he’ll be up there. I saw his playoff peformance and was utterly blown away. There’s no question the talent is there.
....Darrell Arthur was just traded to Portland for cash
It`s Bud Seligs Fault
Too funny. From Brian Hoch’s MLB Blog about the Furry Convention.
“Most of the players were a little taken aback – Alex Rodriguez was telling Derek Jeter how he got caught in an elevator with nine hissing cats, and thought they might start scratching him—but Jason Giambi absolutely loved it. Big shocker there. If the Yankees didn’t have to get out of town tonight, you get the feeling the Big G would hang out for another night and join the fun.
“Those people are awesome,” he said. “Awesome.”
The rib fractures that Hughes had isn’t all that unusual for pitchers, especially pitchers as big as Hughes. He’s a big guy in the chest and back, very muscular, so the muscles pressing against the rib cage when pitching can crack bones. He’s lucky he hasn’t suffered from some of the other things like the muscles pinching off veins and arteries like what happened to Aaron Cook. The only way to fix that is to remove a rib.
This is why MLB
should eradicate
all outdoor baseball
Predicting another JC over Gardner uproar when Strickland gets the nod over Robertson for the bullpen. Not saying it’s the right decision but Strickland has been on fire since closing games for SWB again.
I’d rather MLB would eradicate trolls. Permanently.
Chalmers goes to Miami for Cash
What the hell are they drafting players out of the D-League ? get them in FA then, don’t waste picks.
Of course Jason Giambi loved the Furry Convention.
He IS the Furry Convention.
I’m glad for Billy Walker’s sake that Brandon wasn’t in charge of inviting players to the draft. Walker would have pulled a Brady Quinn and probably jumped the cameraman in the green room:)
I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but someone I was just talking to brought up a GREAT point.
Why didn’t Girardi do his “start a reliever” strategy tonight? If he did it tonight he would have come out of this game looking like an utter genius. He did it that time when they projected a lot of rain when Ian Kennedy was supposed to pitch and he starter Bruney. Tonight, the airports were closed, why not try it? We could have had Mussina pitching a game tomorrow instead of Ponson or Giese. Anyone think of that?
Bill Walker traded to the Celtics
I thought the same thing but Giardi couldn’t burn the pen with Fat Sid going tomorrow. He’s only pitched eight innings in June. Four innings will be a stretch.
But he wouldn’t have had to burn the pen… It would have been the same thing he did with Kennedy when you have the reliever go 2 innings. I’m sure they could have easily squeezed an inning out of Edwar and Olendorf or Veras, or even Hawkins for 1. I mean now Mussina went as a complete waste and it hurts because Girardi has done that clever move before and didn’t do it tonight.
Well, Toronto had no proble with Volquez 4.1 innings, 5 ER.
Only Texas had the grace to roll over for the NL today.
Who’s this Joe Crawford from Kentucky? Somebody please tell me he’s related to Joey Crawford.
Oh, yeah, boo on Blake and Roddick today.
Double W’s by the Yankees tomorrow would be great.
DFox: good thought, it would sure have been nice to have Moose pitching tomorrow. But would Moose have been OK with an extra day of rest? I thought that he was a real creature of habit.
It would be one if they weren’t played a double tomorrow. I wouldn’t call it a clever move last time as IPK still came in to pitch and burned his start.
Gary Carter has lost his mind. Read through to the end:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/27/sports/baseball/27carter.html?ref=sports
Ellen, that’s a good question, but now he pretty much has 5 days of extra rest to deal with so I think he probably would have taken the 1 day.
Billy, last time it was with IPK so you can’t say if it was a good or bad move because IPK was bad when he came in, but he was just as bad when he started games.
So did I read Brian Hoch’s article correct. Giese went to have a burger and missed his flight. We are nothing but an episode of “As the World Turns”
I hear you man but the pen still went five in that game. Either Fat Sid tomorrow or Saturday is going to tax the pen.
If Ponson keeps the score under control as he has in most of his games this year in Texas, he can pitch 6 innings. His hits are a little high, but, few walks or homers allowed. He’s pitched deep in games a few times. 5.1 innings twice, 7 innings twice, 8 innings once and a complete 9 inning game. 12 unearned runs in three games hurt his record. NYY defense is better than the Texas defence, so, a lot of those grounders past second and third base should be flagged down.
Wow, the word loser doesn’t even sum up what Gary Carter has become.
I hope he can go six but he went four innings on June 4 and four in his start for SWB. It’s not like he’s in game shape. He admitted that he was rusty for SWB. I hope he can get it going but I’m doubtful yet hopeful.
Mussina could come back on short rest (Sunday or Monday) to pitch or do as Pettitte does on occassion and pitch his through days in relief.
Omar can hire Carter as his coach when the both are looking for jobs. The Puerto Rican Winter League starts up again next year.
Ponson didn’t seem too rusty….3 hits and 1 earned run in four innings. Nothing more than a late spring training final tuneup.
billy, the bullpen went 5 innings in that game because Ian Kennedy was bad. If the bullpen started this game tonight they would have saved bullpen innings or used the same amount. The 2 innings the bullpen would have thrown in the beginning of the game would have been proceeded by Mussina for maybe 5, and then you would have used the bullpen for 2 at the end. So that’s 4 innings in the worst case scenario that the game actually did get played, which didn’t happen. If he did do the move, he would have saved bullpen because instead of having a short start by Giese or Ponson, you would have had Mussina starting a game tomorrow which would have saved bullpen right there. I fail to see how doing that move would have used any additional bullpen.
Gary Carter is nuts
Didn’t Gary Carter also insult Girardi? I forgot what he said though. Anyone have the quote?
I hope the Yankees sign Chacon. As an old NL Phillies fan, I was pleased to see Ed Wade get his butt kicked.
And I always like Chacon. I still appreciate him, in particular, for the superb Game 4 performance in the 2005 ALDS.
IT’s worth a permanent “Get out of Jail Free” card in my book any day.
“billy, the bullpen went 5 innings in that game because Ian Kennedy was bad”
That’s not true. IPK has been horrible but you can’t pin that game on him. Kennedy entered the game in the sixth inning trailing 2-0 and finished the game, a 4-0 loss. He entered the game in the six inning as Giardi had already used three pitchers and the weather was fine.
The last thing the Yankees need is Chacon. They all seem to get along great in the club house, why would you need a guy in there who is clearly mentally unstable?
Here DFox:
PITTSBURGH – For a guy who played the game with Hall of Fame talent and smarts, Gary Carter is saying and doing some dumb things.
Talking to the L.A. Times about not getting a chance to manage in the big leagues, Carter took a big and unnecessary shot at Joe Girardi and the Steinbrenner family.
”[The] pictures Joe Girardi must have on Steinbrenner,” said Carter, who is managing in a California independent league.
When those words were relayed to Girardi following last night’s 12-3 defeat to the Pirates at PNC Park, Girardi listened without comment. Asked if he had a bad history with Carter, Girardi said he didn’t.
“He was always cordial and nice to me,” Girardi said.
When Willie Randolph’s job was jeopardy in late May, Carter called a Met official to see if he should contact the Wilpon family to let them know he was interested in managing the Mets.
http://www.nypost.com/seven/06252008/sports/yankees/carter_rips_joe__steinbrenners_117099.htm
Mentally unstable? You call a guy who snapped because someone verbally abuse him unstable? I could that having pride and preserving your dignity.
I only wish I had the courage to kick a few of my employers’ butts after a browbeating.
Mentally unstable? You call a guy who snapped because someone verbally abused him unstable? I call that having pride and preserving your dignity.
I only wish I had the courage to kick a few of my employers’ butts after a browbeating.
Chacon deserves to be commended. That goes double for Spree.
As far as Fat Sid, I defer to CJ. “He walked three and struck out two, and said his mechanics were a bit rusty after 16 days without pitching in a game.” He also threw 78 pitches in four.
So the idea is that Chacon and Ponson would cancel each other out?
Well, Ponson pitched this week, so, he should be “less rusty”.
Thanks S.A., that’s hilarious. I can’t believe what an idiot Carter is.
Kill-Schill(ing), yeah, I call someone who does that mentally unstable. We live in a civilized society where you can’t just go beating people every time you have a disagreement. It’s one thing having a shouting match with him, but “snapping” and grabbing him by his neck is a pretty unthinkable thing to do. You can probably kill someone by doing that and if he had I doubt we’d be talking about him possibly coming to the Yankees, but rather how much jail time he was going to get. And you said “I only wish I had the courage to kick a few of my employers’ butts after a browbeating.” That’s exactly what I’m talking about, you want to, but you don’t do it because you can control yourself unlike a crazy person.
And Billy, you’re right about Kennedy, but the bottom line is there’s no reason Girardi couldn’t have said I’ll use the bullpen for 2, and after that, because we have a double header tomorrow, Mussina’s coming in no matter what. What would be the worst that could happen? Mussina could have gotten wasted like he did tonight, but based on the forecasts it seemed like he should have known to do it.
A six inning start from Ponson would be freeking huge.
Green Beret –
mentioned this earlier, but Ponson’s unearned runs all came in 3 starts, 4 UER’s each. In 2 of the 3, he committed errors himself – in 1 his was the only error. So he comes along as part of that bad defense. And unearned runs are rarely the product of poor defense alone – there’s usually other guys that “earned” their way on on the mix.
Now if you’re talking range issues, that’s another deal. But looking at the underlying stats, he hasn’t been so great. A good example of how ERA can be misleading, and wins aren’t an appropriate measure of a pitcher.
I’ve often thought a run shouldn’t be unearned if the pitcher is the one committing the error, at least in his ERA stat.
OJ Mayo fans get ready to cheer for Memphis, he’s been traded.
Brandon, the Knicks just traded the Rooster for the entire island of Malta.
Nick: For real? Who? I turned the TV off.
If he pitches the same way he did in Texas, he’ll win enough games/keep the Yanks in enough games to be worth the effort to have signed him for a few starts.
Two league sources told ESPN.com that the Wolves have reached an agreement in principle with the Memphis Grizzlies that will send the draft rights of Mayo, Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker and Greg Buckner to the Grizzlies in return for the draft rights to Kevin Love, Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal and Jason Collins.
The deal is a blockbuster for both teams. ESPN.com reported on Tuesday that the Wolves GM Kevin McHale was infatuated with Love, but felt that the team had to select Mayo and use him to acquire more assets.
HOW IS KEVIN MCHALE ALLOWED TO DO THIS !!! HE SHOULD BE ASSAINATED

assasinated (you know I’m joking but give me a break)
