Yankee doodle Yankee caps

pmlb2-4836930dt.jpgHere’s the hat the Yankees will wear on the Fourth of July. MLB’s marketing division is slapping the caps on every team and selling them to fans. A “portion of the proceeds” will help returning veterans.

I’m generally against the idea of screwing around with classic logos. The Virginia Tech hat was cool, this a little less so. But it’s only for a day and it is for charity.

Our only hope at this point is that Randy Levine doesn’t sell ad space to Hard Rock on the back of the jerseys. That day is coming.

Hideous, revolting, gaudy, tacky… and those are the positives.

  2. saucY

here i always thought uniform decisions were solely up to the teams… :|

  3. Snow

It’s a better idea that most promotions that come down from marketing. But is MLB putting these on the Toronto Blue Jays’ caps as well??? I can’t imagine Toronto fans buying them!

  4. Eugie

That is an ugly hat.. speaking of hats though, Does anyone know if they make or made a solid black hat with a blood red logo? I’ve found variations with weird tribal crap on it but I’d rather have something solid.

  5. Patrick â„¢

    Doesn’t look that bad.

The Yankees are America’s team after all.

  6. dont retire 21

torontos cap has the canadien flag on it http://shop.mlb.com/product/in.....cp=3172096

  7. cj

I doesn’t look that bad. I assume they will take the tag off though.

  8. gayle

The Blue Jays’ one is actually pretty cool they are using the Canadian flag

  9. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

MLB can’t seriously be putting these on Toronto’s caps. If I’m a Blue Jay, I flat out don’t wear the cap.

    It’s insulting to Canada.

…sorry, did not see gayle’s link

i looked through all of these and i think the yankees one looks the worst. i think the overlapping NY is just too simple and small to mess with. the white border with the flag colors is too much.

the blue jays one is alright, but if i saw that on the street it would take me a minute to figure out what was going on…

  12. Guiseppe Franco

I don’t have a problem with this at all.

Normally, I’m with Pete on messing with logos and that sort of thing.

But hey, it’s a one-time thing, it’s on Independence Day, and the proceeds go to a great charity.

There’s no downside to it whatsoever.

  13. saucY

(sorry for the enormous link :( )

New Era makes all color variations of the Yankee hat. Try their website or maybe try a store website like lids.com

  15. TurnTwo

it looks just like the big interlocking ‘NY’ the yankees had painted behind home plate in the home games that followed 9/11.

while i understand its more of a marketing thing to try and push new merchandise, this to me is harmless, and actually pretty cool… especially compared with some of the other crap designs and extremely lame alternate colors theyve tainted the ‘NY’ with the past couple years.

  16. yankee2123

    It’s just a hat.

  17. jonathan c.

The Indians hat is so hilarious/wrong.

  18. Octavian

“The Indians hat is so hilarious/wrong.”

    Absolutely.

And the Canadian flag on the Blue Jays hat is preposterous unless they’ll be wearing the hat on July 1st instead of July 4th. Come on now.

  19. Christine

It has already made the rounds at Wikipedia as being disrespectful to the flag.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U....._Flag_Code

I’m old-fashioned – I prefer keeping the Yankees colors as they are (I DETEST pink!), but it doesn’t upset me.

  20. Mike

I don’t believe this is a violation of the Flag Code. Believe me, I get mad whenever I see someone wearing an American Flag bandana, but this is really just using a stars and stripes motif, not the flag itself (which they would be allowed to do, and have done, as a patch on the hat and jersey).

I also don’t think MLB will allow advertising on jerseys and hats. The backlash from the Spiderman 2 bases a couple years ago was so great that I just don’t think it would happen.

  21. Don Vito A. Bellamo

    Yes …and $35 is a GREAT DEAL ! :-(

  22. saucY

    $34.99!! yikes!

  23. Mehdi iis one half Arsenal and one half Yankees

    That is hideous.

  24. JMO

So it’s cool to commemorate VA Tech but it’s less cool to remind people on the most important holiday in this country of the sacrifice of our armed forces and of the 4th of July, you know, “We hold these truths to be self evident” and other “less cool” stuff?

    Gimme a break.

  25. Francis The Praying Mantis

The Yankees are going to look like theyre filming a rap video when they wear this cap……Im not mad at that.

  26. Count of Montefusco

    “It’s just a hat.”

    Wrong.

  27. Fredo Corleone

    That’s some bad hat, Harry.

  28. Yanksrule57

The great thing about this country is that at least for now we are still free to express ourselves by wearing a hat like this.
So to those who don’t like it, I disagree, but will defend to the death your right to say so.

I tend to agree with you, Mike, but Wikipedia reports that the above is a violation as well.

When I think of the flag, I think of the actual flag and not the small ones with the wood sticks we got as kids or something that resembles the flag. I guess I was wrong.

I don’t see the hat as disrespectful, but what about the Rock the Vote ad that Christina Aguilera did with her baby wrapped in a flag?

I still don’t see messing with the NY logo. Just leave it as it is.

  31. 86w183

    JMO—

Do you think that hat honors or respects our veterans our flag or ideals in any way, shape or form? I sure don’t.

Why not an actual American Flag on the brim with a cut line “God Bless the USA” or “God Bless Our Troops”?

That would be respectful. This is just something so tacky they wouldn’t sell it at a Liberace Museum.

Personally I think ALL commercial uses of the flag are distasteful. If baseball wants to support our veterans, great! It’s a mega-billion dollar industry and they can write a huge check without resorting to crap like this.

  32. bigjf

As long as it goes to a good cause, I have no problem with it. They still look better than the Sox green jerseys.

  33. YankeesLuv

I like the interlocking NY American flag, but is all the stuff on the bill part of the hat or is it a label? Cause that part is very busy looking. If the hat is just the interlocking American flag NY, then it’s okay. I don’t really have a problem with it, it is for charity.

  34. Real American

At least it is celebrating two great things in our country independence and baseball.

I would be proud to wear the Hat. Its for charity and people should stop their crying.

There are plenty of americans who don’t even have the courtesy to respect the flag and what it stands for
