Game 80: Yankees at Mets

June
27

YANKEES (42-37)
Damon LF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF
Molina C
Ponson RHP

METS
Reyes SS
Castillo 2B
Wright 3B
Beltran CF
Delgado 1B
Nixon LF
Castro C
Chavez RF
Martinez RHP

Pedro Martinez (2-1, 6.57) vs. the Yankees hitters.

Sidney Ponson (4-1, 3.88) vs. the Mets hitters.

Notes: Never thought this would get posted before first pitch. Getting here was fine. Parking was the problem. … Kei Igawa is in the house. If Sir Sidney gets knocked around early, you’re going to see a lot of the K-Man.

Back later with updates. But lots of newspaper work to do first.

UPDATE, 9:04 p.m.: Sam Borden just finished his 10-mile walk and arrived at Shea Stadium. Third inning, not bad.

UPDATE, 10:10 p.m.: Sorry for the lack of updates. Three stories to do.

How about that Sidney Ponson? As I predicted, he would clearly be better than Pedro Martinez.

Seriously, it just goes to show that you can’t predict everything. Regardless of what kind of person he is, Ponson had been pitching poorly before he was released. He’s been one hit away from big trouble all night but has dived, ducked, dipped and dodged out of trouble.

UPDATE, 10;37 p.m.: So much for the demise of Bobby Abreu. … Meanwhile Kyle Farnsworth is pitching for the first time since he had the sitches. 9-0 seems safe, however.

UPDATE, 10:41 p.m.: So of course he walks the first hitter. You can’t make this stuff up.

UPDATE, 11:17 p.m.: Finally, the pefect role for the K-Man. Up 9-0. Bet he walks somebody.

  1. JR Yankees

Good news about no problem getting to the park. Apparently the bad news was that Igawa was there waiting for you.

  2. andy Hawkin's ghost

..then we’ll be seeing a lot of the K-man. What’s the record for most runs scored in a double header?

  3. V (1)

    Let’s go Sidney!!

  4. mel

Way to go, Pete. Our fearless leader. lol.

  5. Mr Hat

Here is how a slumping team gets healthy.

Play against Giese, Ohlendorf and Ramirez.

  6. Kelvin

This is the double header from hell for Pete.

    Igawa pitching???

  7. Fire Girardi

    this should be funny

  8. Denver Yank

    couldn’t you take the subway?

better yet, a bunch of yous could have taken a taxi-van.

  9. JFud81

Just when you think it can’t get any worse.

  10. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue

I have never been such a Sidney Ponson fan in my life. Here’s to that beef jerky giving us 6 innings of work and giving up 2 runs or less…Then PLEASE, Mr. Cashman, DFA Igawa RIGHT AFTER THE GAME…..PAH-LLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASE !

  11. Denver Yank

what time does the game start?

  12. Barry - acigarsmoker.com

People can’t seriously be looking to fire Girardi already? The issue is cashman.. One for not trading for Santana, and 2 for not making the adjustment this year…

We have a AAA pitching staff.. thank god for Joba or we would be done…

  13. V

Ponson gets a bad rap but he has actually pitched really well this year.

  14. Fire Girardi

Darrell Strawberry is out of jail? Since when?

  15. Joe from Long Island

Pete – Glad you arrived safely. Parking is always a problem.

As I said in previous post, all writers and players should be complimented for professionalism for putting up with this atrocity of scheduling.

    Let’s go Yankees.

  16. Denny

What is Girardi supposed to do with this crap pitching staff?

It’s about the players. Ask Joe T in LA.

  17. Fire Girardi

It sounds like its the 9th inning of the Mets winning

  18. stark

“As I said in previous post, all writers and players should be complimented for professionalism for putting up with this atrocity of scheduling.”

I’ll cry for millionaires getting police escorts and flying charter flights first class. Are you kidding me?

  19. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Okay. Think optimistic.

    The score is 0-0!

We can still win this game!

  20. Jack Nicholson

I wish I’m a mets fan. They are so much a better team than the Yankees.

  21. Fire Girardi

I guess Met fans take a 15 run game as them going to the World Series?

  22. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us?

Glad you made it in time Pete.

OK, that last game was a disaster. Time to move on and win this bad boy. Let’s go Ponson. Surprise me.

  23. Greg

isn’t there supposed to be a 40 man roster move since they purchased ponson’s contract?

  24. Fire Girardi

    Jack Nick is a Troll

  25. Fire Girardi

    A bomb from A rod

  26. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Greg: they took Steven White off the 40 man sometime last week.

  27. Confucius

One positive already. We aren’t going to be no-hit.

  28. Fire Girardi

    Over/Under 2 HBP by Pedro

  29. Greg

Rebecca, but that was for Justin Christian

  30. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    …..

    Not fair.

    So. Not. Fair.

  31. Fire Girardi

fuc kin Michael Kay hyping that up. Thank god I wasnt listening to Sterling

  32. éí 'aaníígÓÓ 'áhoot'é'

Come on Yankees. Desperate. Win Now.

  33. mel

    Such a tease. :)

  34. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us?

Grab your shot glasses people. Here we go! Good luck

  35. BBB

    “Over/Under 2 HBP by Pedro”

That biatch wont be hitting anyone now that he has to bat. Thats how cowards roll.

  36. Fran

    That was close.

  37. The Fallen Phoenix

Oh, that A-Rod; he deliberately fell short of a 1st inning home run because that would be too “clutch,” spotting the Yankees a two-run lead after a bad loss before their pitcher gets to take the mound.

This is going to be quite a ride…I’m going to hold my breath every time Sir Sidney throws a pitch.

  38. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan)

Everyone downing their first adult beverage?

Sir Sidney ready to take the mound for the Bronx Bombers…

  39. BBB

Here we go Sid, here we go!

Oh gawd, he has even more chins than I remembered…

  40. JoeT 28 in 09!! MO FOR CY YOUNG!! FIRE CASHMAN!!

that’s at least 2 seconds drinking

  41. Fire Girardi

    Nice pitch

  42. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

One down. Twenty Six to go.

  43. mel

    Strap yourselves in, kiddies.

  44. Fire Girardi

    Whoa 2 quick outs

  45. Shame Spencer

    niiiiice play by jeter

  46. The Fallen Phoenix

…I would eat enough caps to satisfy Sir Sidney’s stomach if he somehow gunned twenty six more batters in a row.

I feel safe saying that because it’s not going to happen. Not even the Devil would make a deal for *that* soul…

  47. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Twenty five.

(Yeah. Small bites. One batter at a time. We can do this.)

  48. CaptainsCorner

Is the golden buy Jeter ever going to have an at bat where he has patience..ever again? I mean it is a joke already. 2-0 and he swings at a borderline strike. I love how Kay always says Jeter has a 20 game or whatever hitting streak..Yeah that is nice but do it when it counts..He has had his moments this year but for the most part he had been absolutely dreadful. I don’t know what happened to the patient Jeter.

  49. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan)

Throw strikes my brother…6 or 7 outta the Mets 9 are STIFFS.

  50. Fire Girardi

Castillos swing looks worse than my 5 year olds

  51. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue

    Yankees win this game 10-0

  52. pete

hey mr hat you forgot to mention mr latroy hawkins in your comment. although i think you should leave edwar ramirez out of your list. he has pitched good. he shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence with those other three pitchers.

  53. éí 'aaníígÓÓ 'áhoot'é'

Pete you look like that character in WALL-E.

  54. Fire Girardi

    I asked this before

    Is Sidney Ponson legally obese?

  55. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us?

1 more out Ponson. Come on

  56. Fire Girardi

How come Met fans go to Yankee Stadium for the Subway Series, but Yankee fans dont go to Shea?

  57. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

    Ponson should get Bruney’d

    and lose 100 pounds

  58. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    …And so it begins.

  59. Fire Girardi

Yankee Stadium was 40% Met fans today and Shea is about 90% Met fans

  60. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue

    I can’t look….

  61. Shame Spencer

“How come Met fans go to Yankee Stadium for the Subway Series, but Yankee fans dont go to Shea?”

because no self respecting yankee fan would ever be caught dead in queens

  62. BBB

Can someone refresh my memory on the rules of the Sir Sid drinking game? A BB is a shot, right?

  63. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Fire Girardi:

    You’ve ever been to Shea?

  64. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us?

“How come Met fans go to Yankee Stadium for the Subway Series, but Yankee fans dont go to Shea?”

Maybe they are scared of the Shea Stadium rats?

  65. mark

Sidney has pitched in the bigs. He really does know how to win games. Why not this one? Relax and give it a chance.

Rebecca if you were at the afternoon game I would say maybe you might want to sell any other tickets you have this season.

Mets fans are huge hypocrites. A week ago they couldn’t boo their team enough.

  66. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue

a WALK !….I am cheering the WALK !…..( drum roll here )…..

  67. Fire Girardi

    Met Fans to Delgado

This Morning: Get out of Town

Tonight: Sign him for an extension

    Typical Met Fans

  68. CaptainsCorner

I am tired of seeing Wright hitting against the Yanks. He is a decent player and the Yanks do not pitch him right. He only hits the ball to RF and they have not yet this season pitched him inside!!! Why are they pitching him outside so he can just poke the ball to RF like he does in every at bat? I am sick of these losers hitting the Yanks..Let me guess Delgado who will not hit another homerun for 1 month will kill the Yanks in this game? Embarrassing…

  69. BBB

“How come Met fans go to Yankee Stadium for the Subway Series, but Yankee fans dont go to Shea?”

    Cause it smells?

  70. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue

Come on Sidney…YOU CAN DO IT ! :-)

  71. Fire Girardi

    Beautiful inning by Ponson

hahahahaha Did I just hear boo’s for Delgado already?

  72. pete

sidney ponson the season savior. lol

  73. Fran

Sidney through 1 and he even got Delgado out!

  74. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue

More evidence that there IS a God ! ;-)

  75. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Three outs.

    Twenty four to go.

2008 New York Yankees, I can haz sum runs nao plz k thx?!

Staying optimistic: the score is 0-0! We can still win this game!

  76. BBB

    Right on Sir Sid!!

  77. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan)

    OK…decent start.
Sir Sidney Ponson Drinking Game participants (over age 21 only):
one beer before game started, one shot for the 1B…and one shot for the BB.

  78. little steven

how has chacon not been signed yet? whats the downside?

  79. mark

So thinking positive it would be great if Sidney gets some of the old stuff back. That plugs a hole in the rotation. Pettitte, Mussina, Joba, Ponson, Rasner (with Moeller catching him)/Giese.

  80. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us?

    get to work bats

  81. Confucius

“More evidence that there IS a God ! ;-)

But He’s pitched one inning. Sometimes He can only go 5.

  82. Shame Spencer

“how has chacon not been signed yet? whats the downside?”

..could be that he choked his gm? im not an expert though.

  83. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan)

    “Anyone speak Aruban?

    I just googled “Ponson”.

In Aruban dialect, it means “to be fat, hammered and blessed with a decent arm.”

In English, it means “to serve a six month bit in the local clink.”

Does that strike anyone as odd?”

LMAO…Ponson is our fat & drunken SP tonight, baby!!!

  84. Fire Girardi

The downside to Chacon is manslaughter

  85. Fire Girardi

Delgado getting easy ground balls and cheers like they are webgems

  86. CaptainsCorner

Note to Kay, Pedro hasn’t been good for 4 years now. Lets not make it seem like he is Pedro of 10 years ago. If the Yanks don’t hit him it is because they are tired, old or just not hitting well like they haven’t all year.

  87. mark

Rebecca I think we’re positive. If you keep saying it it looks like you’re not. No need to worry. You’re not at the game. (ha ha)

little steven I don’t know what the Yankees are thinking about Chacon but how good can it look to sign someone who has assaulted a manager? It’s almost like an insult to the honor of the game to sign someone who pushed down his manager.

  88. Fire Girardi

At least the top of the order is up next inning? Yet we have Molina and Ponson to lead off that inning

  89. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    bronxbomber:

I had to see it first hand. So many Mets fans there. I was about ready to cry.

  90. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan)

“The downside to Chacon is manslaughter”

On the bright side, if he “took out” Cash they’d have to bring in a new GM, right?

    (It’s a joke, people.)

  91. Nick in SF

Pedro gets special consideration for the Hall of Fame because of the era he pitched in and because he recognized that the Yankees were his daddy.

  92. Someone Else

    Rebecca -

    That’s because Mets fans don’t work ;-)

  93. Jeff NJ

Funny thing about the Igawa call up is that I was listening to Feinsand on with john and Saz and he was going on and on about David Robertson, assuming he would be the next call up. Guy thinks like a blogger, guess Cash doesn’t.

  94. mark

David Wrighht looks like he wears false teeth.

  95. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

…We’re all going to be really, uh, not sober, by the end of the evening, aren’t we?

  96. dana

mets fans think they punched their ticket to the series after beating Giese this afternoon. I swear I thank god every day that I was born a Yankee fan. Both teams have ther fair share of annoying loser fans but I’ve never seen anything like the Met fan. What a serious inferiority complex!!

  97. Shame Spencer

if pedro is a hall of famer is moose?

  98. Confucius

“Note to Kay, Pedro hasn’t been good for 4 years now. Lets not make it seem like he is Pedro of 10 years ago. If the Yanks don’t hit him it is because they are tired, old or just not hitting well like they haven’t all year.”

This is a guy who thinks not mentioning a perfect game is equatable to not mentioning the holocaust. I stopped listening years ago.

  99. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan)

“if pedro is a hall of famer is moose?”

If he leads us to a WS this year.

  100. Fire Girardi

Lets say (I dont think they will) the Mets win 3 out of 4. They will definetly be sayiing they are the team to beat in the NL again and punching their ticket to the Series. But the funny part is, they will get swept next weekend by the Phillies and say they need a change

Met fans are bad for baseball

  101. Someone Else

“if pedro is a hall of famer is moose?”

Pedro is the best pitcher in the HISTORY OF BASEBALL by ERA+. The peak of his career was just absolutely amazing. A 2.00 ERA in the late 90s?

  102. mark

Mulligan, your “it’s a joke people” reminded me of the Adam Grossman skit on SNL!

I can’t stand Nixon. Always been a Yankee killer.

  103. BBB

“if pedro is a hall of famer is moose?”

Yes. He’s solidifying his case with the renaissance he is enjoying now.

Cmon Sir Sid! Keep me sober enough to still be able to spell solidifying and renaissance a few innings from now!

  104. Fire Girardi

If Moose gets to 300 (which I think now he will) he is an obvious HOFer. If Moose is smart he does anything and everything to get to 300

  105. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan)

C’mon throw strikes Sir Sid…I’ll be incoherent by the 3rd at this rate.

  106. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us?

I guess no 1-2-3 here for Ponson

  107. Fire Girardi

    Uh oh. Nixon and Castro?

  108. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue

can I say aargh yet ?

  109. CaptainsCorner

Ummm Damon is playing LF because?!! Catch the f’n ball…

  110. mark

Pedro was amazing. The best control pitcher I have ever watched.

  111. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    bronx bomber: 0-5.

    0-bleeping-5.

Note to Johnny: Sidney Ponson is on the mound. If it’s hit, you have to catch it.

  112. Someone Else

Ok, that ball was catchable by Damon.

I long for the day that the Yankees have competent outfielders.

  113. BBB

OK, apparently he wants us all to get wasted…

  114. Angel

“Met fans are bad for baseball”

I feel that way about some of my fellow Yankee fans.

  115. Boston Dave

will we ever see a Yankee OF that makes a diving catch?

  116. Shame Spencer

fire girardi, 30+ more wins is a lot for moose to get depending on what he does in the second half of this year. even if he doesnt, does that automatically mean he is out of consideration?

  117. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue

OK…this is the end for Sidney….If HE is getting squeezed…and now he IS…then his MEAT pitches are gonna get smoked. Good night, Yankee fans. Tomorrow is another day….

  118. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Sidney. Strike zone. Please. I can’t take much more of this.

  119. mark

Someone I see Abreu and Melky as more than competent.

  120. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us?

anyone else actually scared to watch this? Or is it just me?

  121. Fire Girardi

Yankees dont know how to dive. Not in there Vocab

  122. JoeT 28 in 09!! MO FOR CY YOUNG!! FIRE CASHMAN!!

I wish Steinbrenner still had his mind…..

  123. Confucius

Looks like it’s time for an Aruban Tickle

Which is either something kinky or a -really- bad inning, depending on the dialect.

  124. Matt

This ump is a joke. Ponson can’t get a pitch.

  125. mark

He is definitely getting squeezed. Great.

  126. Tom #2

This is Major League Baseball – A German Bundesliga-Outfielder would have catched that one.

  127. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    ……

    Think positive…think positive…

  128. Boston Dave

“If Moose gets to 300 (which I think now he will) he is an obvious HOFer.”

I think he probably gets in with 300, but for some reason I think many sportswriters just don’t and won’t see him as a HOF. It may take a while for him to get in even with 300. The fact that he’s a Yankee wouldn’t help his case with a few biased voters either.

  129. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us?

    Thsi is so not good

  130. Fran

This is not looking good. Didn’t the Mets score enough runs in the 1st game

  131. Fire Girardi

We need to get a grounder to Ponson

  132. CaptainsCorner

Damon that is why you have to catch the fly ball…Yanks better stop the game and get Ponson some ice cream and candy.

  133. The Fallen Phoenix

I wish I had something harder than a bottle of champagne sitting on my kitchen counter; and that is *not* the appropriate kind of drink to be opening, let alone drinking, right now.

…why must you do this to us, Sidney? It’s the bottom of the lineup…

  134. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

bronxbomber: I must have some real bad karma. I just can’t figure out why.

  135. Angel {insert random statement plus multipe !!!!!'s here}

    Come on, Ponson.

  136. Fire Girardi

    Here comes the suicide squeeze

  137. mark

Rebecca don’t try to figure it. Just hang out with us during games.

  138. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here}

    That was useful.

  139. Boston Dave

don’t say it yet! dont jinx Ponson!

  140. Fire Girardi

Praying Praying Praying 1 more out Praying

  141. Shame Spencer

is this a tease or is he really gonna get out of this?

  142. Fran

    C’mon Sidney. One more out.

  143. BBB

    Woohoo, he K’d the pitcher!

    Ponson Greatness?

  144. CaptainsCorner

I am surprised that the Mets didn’t try to sign Manny and Ortiz for the game…They are going all out for this game..Playing Nixon both games hoping that he has some Boston magic..Castillo who’s legs are hanging on by a thread and only plays 2 games and then gets a day off plays both games. Pathetic how much the Mets are obsessed with the Yanks…

  145. Boston Dave

    Yah!!!

  146. Fran

Sidney!!!!Nice job getting out of the jam

  147. Fire Girardi

    Oh MY friggin God

Ponson my hero as of the 2nd inning

  148. JoeT 28 in 09!! MO FOR CY YOUNG!! FIRE CASHMAN!!

    FIST PUMP!!!!

    SHOTS ALL AROUND

  149. mark

Rebecca maybe it’s because you were mean to Trisha and she was nothing but Yankee sunshine! Ha ha ha.

That better be a Robby web gem.

  150. Someone Else

    AWESOME!

  151. Shame Spencer

that inning was about as pretty as ponson himself.. either way ill take it!

  152. Zach in Port Jeff

    somebody get sidney a beer!

  153. Confucius

Wow. Somewhere in this park, there’s an Aruban wiping the back of the chair in front of him.

  154. Nick in SF

Please, if Moose makes it to 300, given where he is now and his age, he’ll make the Hall for sure. The ambiguity is if he finishes in the 277-280 range with no rings and no seasons with 20+ wins. Hopefully he takes care of those this year.

    Oh, and: Ponson!

  155. little steven

WOW. BASEBALL IMMORTALITY FOR SYDNEY PONSON

  156. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Okay. Six down. Twenty one to go.

    Thinking positive.

    “Ponson Greatness?

    I mean, PONSON GREATNESS!!!!!

  158. mark

    Mulligan so far so good.

  159. S.A.- No pain..no gain! I still believe in this team

    get to work bats! Stat!

  160. Nick in SF

I meant that range to be a little wider than 277-280, I was just excited by the Ponsanity of it all!

  161. CaptainsCorner

Ponson really does not have bad stuff. His curve is a decent pitch. Better then I remember…He will probably still get lit up in this game but still…

  162. The Fallen Phoenix

…you know, who needs drinking to chop off some years at the end of my life expectancy? Watching this game will have the same net effect.

The Yankees just need to plate some runs against Pedro; try and get back into the Mets’ bullpen.

  163. Boston Dave

Ponson is showing excellent control. He’s walked a couple but the ump has a tight zone and he’s not missing his spots by much. He’s getting decent sink on his fastball and changing up well.

Considering the Yanks circumstances in the rotation right now, Ponson could be a…. savior?

  164. Fire Girardi

Did anyone see Rasners face? He was pissed. He had to think his roster spot is gone if Ponson does good

  165. Shame Spencer

maybe ponson can hit a homer now too?

  166. farnsworthy

keep dreaming boston dave. ponson is a lucky scrub.

  167. S.A.- No pain..no gain! I still believe in this team

Please make Pedro break a sweat here

  168. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan)

“I think he probably gets in with 300, but for some reason I think many sportswriters just don’t and won’t see him as a HOF. It may take a while for him to get in even with 300. The fact that he’s a Yankee wouldn’t help his case with a few biased voters either.”

No 20 win seasons…no championships…he’ll have to wait, IMO.

    ARUBIAN TICKLE…baby!!! (Confucius you’re a genius)

  169. Dee

Did anyone else see Ponson mouthing that 4-letter word after he got out of that jam? :-)

  170. mark

Why are some of you surprised that Sidney knows how to pitch? Yeah anything is possible but one possibility is he has a real good game. He didn’t spend his career in AAA! (I said AAA, not AA)

Another good job by Ponson. Since the umpire has given him a strike zone the size of a pea. But give or take 1 or 2 innings it is going to fall apart. It would be nice if the Yanks actually scored some runs. Please tell me I did not just see Igawa stretching…I might vomit.

Pedro figured it out. Brian Cashman stomped on Chien-Ming Wang’s foot, took a sledgehammer to Phil Hughes’ ribs, roughed up Alan Horne and Ian Kennedy in a dark alley, and dropped an anvil on Jorge Posadas shoulder.

    All Brian Cashman’s fault!

  269. Al from BK

  272. The Fallen Phoenix

  373. Fran

    Great throw by Molina.

  374. Matt

Wow, the Viz is even worse than LaTroy this year!

  375. YankeesLuv

Yeahhh Molina, throws out Reyes trying to steal 2nd base. :)

  376. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue

the FORCE is with us ! :-)

  377. TKinDC

    Boston Dave –

The problem is that we exchanged the Viz for Hawkins.

Seems pretty even this year, except the Viz wanted multiple years.

  378. Nick in SF

Rebecca, you saw his last at-bat, didn’t you? Just for that alone…

nyfaninlaalaland, I worked right in that area near the airport where Costa Mesa and Irvine and Newport all meet up. The restaurant I most frequently attended was… In ‘N’ Out Burger. I do remember going to some psuedo-hipster indie coffee place on… um… Newport Blvd? It was close to the Tower Records, which is probably now gone.

  379. Matt

And we got a draft pick out of him!

  380. Fran

“if he left at 5:30 like he said he did, then it was 3 hours and 16 minutes…..”

  381. BBB

oh so sadly, I believe every Tower Records is now gone. Pains my soul, I loved that place. Now its been replaced by itunes.com *grumble*

  382. Matt

Vizcaino has been bad, but the one we really regret getting away is Dotel I think. We gave up on him when he was coming back off TJ surgery and had a few bad outings. You think we wish we had him now?

  383. JoeT 28 in 09!! MO FOR CY YOUNG!! FIRE CASHMAN!!

BBB, there was a time when I thought the Tower Records on Broadway & 4th was the coolest place on earth. I never feel like that when I open up iTunes!

  390. BBB

Matt, I’ll never understand why we only signed Dotel to a 1 year deal, knowing he’d be rehabbing most of the time. Way to let the guy rehab using the Yankee facilities for free, yet without reaping any of the benefits.

He got lucky again that Nixon had to catch that at an odd angle or he wouldn’t have gotten the run in. You’d think Cano would learn?

  432. Nick in SF

Ok Cano, negative points for swinging at the first pitch, moderate bonus points for not grounding out again. License to smirk at Ponson’s swing: still revoked.

  433. Fran

Robbie did what Alex could not in his at bat – 2 RBI for Cano tonight

  434. AsmosEyes

How many times has Cano swung at the first pitch following a walk? I’ve lost count.

  435. Jeff NJ

Jose Molina is definitely a plus defender to Jorge right now. The best lineup in AL parks with Matsui hurt has Jorge as DH until he returns, guess that gives Jose some short term fantasy value.

  436. The Fallen Phoenix

Melky also swung at the first pitch. Unlike Cano, he missed it.

  437. S.A.- No pain..no gain! I still believe in this team

  438. Pedro

Cano, always a dumb hack on a first pitch. Ridiculous, he’ll never learn.

  513. stuart

Alright I will admit it, Jeter looks like Jeter… Hitting the ball the opposite field with power etc.

    Good for Derek….

That is one less problem we have. The only problems the yanks have is helping Cano figure things out, help melky improve his BA 20 points and OBP 30 or 40pts. Get 2 or 3 arms in the pens and they need at least 1 legit strter……..

in essence they need 4 arms……

  514. booey

  523. Comedy Flava

Sometimes for a hitter like Cano the best pitch to drive is the first pitch of the at bat. Because pitchers know you are a swinger and they don’t want to walk you. They want to start off strike one.

See what his avg looks like on Aug 1.

  526. CaptainsCorner

What does Cano swing at the 1st pitch 95% of the time? The problem is with him he is not looking for good pithes to hit, he is always swinging wildly at anything..He needs to swing at pitches he thinks he can hit because every team knows not to throw the 1st pitch in the strike zone since he is always hacking at it. He needs to learn some patience and when a pitch is good to hit.

“TKinDC: yes, I think it’s Michael Penn that she’s married to.”

For those of you scoring at home – that is neither the fat one nor the really good actor

  539. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue

So Far..Ponson has pitched 5.1,,,given up ZERO RUNS on 5 hits, walked 4 and struck out 3…..I would say that is pretty much GREAT compared to ANY of the current Yankee Starters….wouldn’t you ?….Which of our other 4 starters pitches BETTER than that on anywhere NEAR a consistent basis ?….Huh ?….that would be NONE of them ! I am in no way saying the Ponson is the greatest…but so far tonight…he is gettin’ it done, right ????????

  540. Fredo Corleone

Melancon roughed up a little tonite in Portland. 3 ER in 3 2/3 innings.

  541. Fran

Ponson doing a great job through 6. He worked into trouble but got out of it.

I am sure he will get another start. He deserves it.

  542. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Pete, I love the alliteration.

  543. Boston Dave

    Ponson at 96 pitches.

I’d let him start the 7th.

  544. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan)

“ponson didnt pitch all that great but he was effective”

I take OFFENSE at this post…PONSANITY ruled the night of Friday, June 27, 2008…and the damn HP ump squeezed him early!

Sir Sidney Ponson, I raise my glass is admiration…SALUTE

  545. sunny615

who is this pitcher and what did he eat the real Ponson?

  546. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue

so finally,… AFTER Sidney finishes his 6th inning of shutout pitching, MLB.TV takes down the LABORING headline….bunch of Nancy Boys that they are….

They have a plan and they won’t deviate from it.

Nate, don’t get too excited. I’m guessing that was posted by the “fake Stuart”.

  551. Boston Dave

    Pete… you mean “hadn’t” ?

  552. Scorpio

I have to agree with Boston Dave, Sir Sid has pitched well enough to earn another game or two. Do you think he’ll work out of the bullpen as a long man? Ollie & Hawkins are beyond scary.

  553. V

I said Ponson would be good all day today.

  554. Tom

reyes bailed him out as did the castro dp which was hit hard

but im not complaining…kudos to ponson

  555. BBB

“We hold a 6 run lead and PEDRO is the one that has been forced out of the game and the headline reads PONSON IS LABORING, BUT YANKEES LEADS METS”

That’s okay. Sir Sid will eat their children, and they will regret their hyperbole deeply.

    so far – 6 innings, 0 runs, 96 pitches, 11 groundouts…PONSON GREATNESS!!!

  556. S.A.- No pain..no gain! I still believe in this team

Look at Fatcesa-not a pretty sight

  558. Nick in SF

Re: DirecTV, the MLB package has been much better this season than it was last year. This season, they usually have both the home and away broadcasts for both teams, which means I’ve spent much less time watching Yankees’ opponents’ broadcasts this year than I did last year. Even though Kay & Co. get annoying, it’s still much better than the alternative most of the time.

  559. Nate

Ponson has earned start #2. Looks like Rasner pitches for his job on Sunday.

  560. GreenBeret7

Ponson deserves a night on the town after this game. It’s on me, Sidney.

  561. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan)

    “Ponson at 96 pitches.

I’d let him start the 7th”

    Agree.
Work him like a “rented mule”…maybe if we make him drink LH he’ll last a month or two…with this lead, I say 110 – 120.

  562. Boston Dave

    Scorpio,

I think Geise is the more logical long man. Ponson should stay in the rotation as long as he can give them average #4/5 starter stuff.

If he can get them to the break, they can give some of the young guys a look.

  563. BBB

    Wait…Cano took a called strike 1?

    So far, so good…PONSANITY, baby!

  575. CaptainsCorner

Ponson is good for 3-4 starts..Just like Rasner was and then it is time to move on. Ponson wasn’t bad for the Yanks in 2006 for a couple of starts and then exploded.

  601. BBB

Well now I am kind of getting why Mets fans call this guy Blowenweis…

  602. Boston Dave

The issue with Cano is that teams actually scout other teams.

Other pitchers know Cano does not have very good plate discipline right now. Good pitchers aren’t going to give him a pitch to hit.

If he can improve his discipline, he can be an all-star. Otherwise, he’s going to be inconsistent and frustrating to watch (because we all know how good he could be).

  603. Confucius

Posada is not a good catcher, game caller and doesn’t work good with pitchers he is not used to…BUT Rasner has been throwing absolute meatballs. Those are not Posada’s fault. Every pitch that Rasner threw that got hammered in his last couple of starts were right down the middle.

  608. Matty

I’m betting Ponson gets the start, Giese returns to the long-man relief role, Igawa is demoted, and the Yankees promote Robertson or Cox.

  611. Tom

    mark,
it is well known that jorge posada, while hes ok at throwing runners out when his shoulder isnt hurting and is a top hitting catcher in this league, hes a terrible recevier of the ball and game caller…its amazing how much better guys like wang and rasner are when moeller or molina are behind the plate

  612. rconn23

    Boston Dave,

I’ve been a Yankee fan for 28 years. Just because I’m not comfortable with a lot of the moves the team has made doesn’t make me a troll.

  613. 27 this year

It is kinda funny. Lately, either our pitching is superb like tonight, no runs or just flat out blows up like when Rasner and Giese pitched. Before Giese and Rasner, the Yankees had a few shutouts. Can’t they pitch some of those bad ones kinda in the middle like yesterday. Giving up five runs wouldn’t be too bad.

I guess I didn’t pay enough attention when Cano was hitting .340 but I don’t remember him being this free swinging at the plate.

Even when Giambi was hitting .200, he kept the same approach. It seems like Cano has completely lost his approach to hitting. If he can be successful only seeing 1.5 pitches per AB, I’ll be just as happy. I just don’t see it.

Since Barry Bonds isn’t doing anything, maybe Cano can hire him as a hitting coach because Long isn’t getting through to the guy.

“Dave, don’t you think the scouts would have known about Cano after the first year and worked over his “weakness” before now?”

GB, I don’t remember Cano’s at bats being so similar in previous years.

Cano definitely swung at high pitches out of the zone but he’s all over the place now. It’s actually impressive that he puts some of the pitches he hits into play. If he can just learn to take those pitches, he’ll be in great shape.

  657. Fran

Just throw strikes Kyle. You don’t want to walk batters.

Hopefully Cano is on that track.

  662. Doreen

Michael Kay, not content with the LaTroy 21 controversy, is now stoking a Hernandez 17 controversy. Sigh.

  663. GreenBeret7

  664. Boston Dave

    rconn,

ok, then I apologize. I misinterpreted a few of your earlier posts….

  665. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan)

Can you IMAGINE the $M$ Farnsworth has made by just throwing straight beans and never using his brain.
Amazing, 97 with no movement..how about taking off 3-4 mph and adjusting your grip or arm angle slightly for more movement so you’re not so damn hitable?

  666. mark

Sunny are you watching the game? Did you see the dude’s hand taped up? I don’t know if I would call someone pitching with a stitched taped hand useless. Maybe gutsy.

  667. CaptainsCorner

Maybe he should get more stitches..Maybe he pitches better with them?! Or is it because it is 9-0? I will go with it is because of the score.

  668. Scorpio

A-Rod ain’t always clutch but I would never call him “meaningless”. All you need to do is look back at the team during his DL stint. A-Rod is very important to this team. He’s the leader in A.L. batting average right now, too.

and regardless, he’s averaging just over 20 walks per season (if you prorate his 2008)

Ah, pre-Dallas Patrick Duffy, good stuff.

    CaptainsCorner, uh, nice typo?

  675. CaptainsCorner

Kay thinks that the double header is cool…Yeah it is cool because he doesn’t have to play in them!!!! He sits on his fat tush eating in the booth. Try playing 18 innings and then lets see if it is still “cool”.

Scary thought. I just thought the same thing and I’m not even drinking.

  677. BBB

Anyway, pretty good inning for him all things considered. Maybe just shaking off the rust of not pitching in 5 days with that initial BB. But he worked around it which is big for him, and preserved Ponson’s shutout

    Groundhoggator -

next time you feel the need to paste the magna carta into the blog – you might just email it to pete.

  679. Joe from Long Island

Two of the best pitching performances for the Yanks tonight were provided by Sir Sidney and Krazy Kyle. Pete’s right. Go figure.

  685. Pedro

Kei Igawa should be the one pitching the next 2 innings, not Veras.

  686. GreenBeret7

Dave, as long as Cano’s walks keep going up and strikeouts keep going down, whether “pro-rated” or not, and he hits .315-.320 every year, and gets his 90 plus RBI and 190 hits, with that glove, the Yankees and fans have no reason to complain.

  687. Groundhoggator

With Ponson’s start, you can now shift Giese to long relief in the bullpen and DFA Hawkins for either Robertson or Cox and send Kei back to Scranton.

  688. SamVA

gotta give it to Ponson heck of a start!… (lucky)

  692. BBB

If Ponson doesnt get another start in 5 days, Girardi smokes crack. Very open and shut if you ask me. Although I still might consider giving Giese more starts in the future also, as someone wrote before I want to see Moeller catch Ras in his next start, and if he doesnt improve maybe he should be the one to go to the pen for long relief.

Either way, as long as the Yanks dont rush IPK back up I’ll be fine. Let him have his few weeks in the minors once he is activated, he is too important to our future whether as a starter or trade bait to mess with his development. He was rushed this season as it was.

Just got back from the SI Yankees game tonight. Great atmosphere, and great game. Jack Rye had a big night, drafted out of FSU. I think it might have been his first game with Staten Island. Had 3 hits tonight. Then the real story was of course Pat Vendette. He came into a 3-3 game in the top of the 8th with a man on 2nd, and 2 outs, and got an out. Staten Island got a run on an error in the bottom of the 8th. Vendette then came out for the 9th, after back to back awful erros by his infielders which Hudson Valley had 1st and 2nd, then they had a sac bunt with 1 out and 2nd and 3rd, but Pat got the job done getting a pop up to the 3rd baseman, and then a grounder to short to end it. Pat Vendette got the win.

    Nick in SF-

My english needs work.I never said Joba to the rotation wasn’t a good thing. But you have to admit the “Plan” wasn’t for Joba to go in the rotation in early JUne.And I would think the Yankees should have had insurance before hand in the 8th or 7th even 6th inning.

This is why like I said you don’t start the season with three rookies to anchor the rotation.I know you are the people who thought Hughes was gonna win 15 games and be our #3 pitcher.Again thats living in fantasy land. And thats why our rotation and bullpen is bad.

But thanks to Joba our rotation is not Horrible just bad. They need a trade.100%

That one didn’t hurt me too much because:

-coming off three championships, four in five years
-the comeback in the ALDS, w/ Jeter flip
-crushing the Mariners (I still hated the franchise for ‘95, but I really hated that Mariner team)
    -Tino & Brosius

I rank ‘04 and Kenny Rogers ahead of ‘01.

  792. Mickey D's

    Ponson. Who would have thought?

  793. Nick in SF

MoBoy, I’ve said several times, I think the timetable on Joba’s transition was moved forward because of the disasters that were Hughes and Kennedy. But it would have happened anyway, just a little later.

They didn’t start the season with three rookies to anchor the rotation. They started the season with Wang, Petttite, and Moose to anchor the rotation, with two rookies at the back end. The rookies both bombed and both got hurt and Wang got hurt in a freak accident.

  794. ripcord

Shea is a wasteland. I’m looking forward to Citi Field more than Yankee Stadium and I’m a Yankee fan.

  795. S.A.- No pain..no gain! I still believe in this team

It arrived in the top of the seventh inning of Game 1 of the Mets-Yankees double dip, after the SNY announcers discussed what a nice job Alex Rodriguez is doing playing third base.

    Take it away, Gary Cohen:

“Of course the thing that the Yankees never talk about is the fact that A-Rod is still twice the shortstop that Jeter is, but you’re not allowed to say that here.”

    http://blogs.trb.com/sports/watchdog/blog/

  796. Ollie

Joba’s timetable was laid out last November. Kennedy and Hughes could have been lights out and they were still moving him at that exact time.

They treat these kids with the utmost care. You really think they bumped something that important up? It makes perfect sense for when they did it. Now he’ll finish with just about 150 innings come Oct 1.

  797. Mark (Free Brett Campaign)

  801. Portly Vendor

I watched Ponson, Farnsworth and Igawa pitch a shutout.

    Too much acid.

  802. TKinDC

More proof that the Yanks didn’t move Joba into the rotation too early (at least in their minds/plans) is the fact that he was allowed to pitch 114 pitches last start

If they were worried – no way that would have happened

  803. Ollie

    Use common sense.

He’s a 22 year old pitcher. An ace pitcher. The highest commodity in the game. You really think they didn’t set this plan up last November? Down to the T?

It is way too important to mess with. They lined it up perfectly if you check all the innings and assume what he will throw the rest of the year. They worked it out and covered every base.

It was win win for them. If the other two kids pitched well it would be a huge bonus. If they didn’t he was coming for help.

One huge flaw in the plan. No one to take his place in the pen. Thanks Farny.

  804. GreenBeret7

I’m not going too excited with Ponson’s start tonight, only because I’d rather wait for repeat performances. He pitched pretty well in Texas because even though he gave up a lot of hits, he kept the ball in the park and kept his walks to a minimum. If he does that, this could be a Chacon/Small type pickup. It will be agonizing to watch at times, but, so far this year, you can’t dispute the results.

  805. Eugie

Who called the shutout? I did

hahaha Kim Jones said: “Is there any chance you got a haircut today”
    Ponson: “No, last week”
    Kim Jones: :silent:

  817. Latte

Rasner. Pitching for his starting role on Sunday.

  818. canocabrera

How funny to hear Sidney Ponson speak, he doesnt look like it but he sounds like Robbie Cano or Jose Molina

  819. Mark (Free Brett Campaign)

Wow Ponson will face Texas next week. I guess for Sidney you can’t get any more motivation then his 1st 2 starts. A subway series game, follwed by the team that released him.

  820. Luke NY

Cashman is a genius. Ponson and Igawa tossing 0’s!!

  821. pat

Kim Jones tells Sidney his next start would line him up against Texas. Sid shrugs it off but that should be an incentive to have a good game.

  822. Uncle Buck

Someone get that Sidney a beer.

  823. V

“Kim Jones tells Sidney his next start would line him up against Texas. Sid shrugs it off but that should be an incentive to have a good game.”

He is a very good pitcher. Pitched around some tight jams. A great pickup by Cashman. :)

  824. Wangawa

Ponson may be a fat alcoholic with an anger management problem, but if he can at least pitch decently, keep him in the rotation for now. He’s a better option than some of these career minor leaguers we’re throwing out there.

Also, one reporter just asked Ponson if he got a haircut today… great questions.

  825. GreenBeret7

Not sure Ponson needs much more incentive than pitching for his career life.

  826. S.A.- No pain..no gain! I still believe in this team

Today was just a weird day

  827. canocabrera

“Also, one reporter just asked Ponson if he got a haircut today… great questions.”

Of course that’s the YES princess, Kim Jones!

  828. Fire Girardi

Jeter trying to rush the interview, him and Kim Jones have a date at his apartment later

  829. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Just got in, It is going to be nice watching a game knowing it has a good outcome.

so today the Yanks scored enough runs to sweep, if not for the AAAA pitchers Cashman runs out there. Tonight CC struck out 11, send Cleveland a few of those superstud SWB future HOF and bring Sabathia in now

  832. stuart

the amazing thing is the Yankee staff has 7 shutouts for the year… I think they had 1 or 2 last yr..

they cannot believe the Igawa can help them, no way are they that stupid..

Today, i have confidence in 2 pen arms Veras(and my confidence is limited) and Mo that is it.. They need to call up some new arms..

What the heck is Hawkins still here for, really come on…….

  833. yankee lover

If the Yankees keep getting in situations where the starter gets them behind early, or if the starter gives the lead up and more early it will demoralize the offense and they`ll struggle. It pays to make the move to CC now

  834. Vegomatic

Just got done with a TIVO fest of todays Yankees. Think the Yankees should keep Ponson and Igawa on the roster. Olly and Matsui to the DL make the room. With Matsui on the DL it also clears room for a left handed bat. So call up Gardner for 2 weeks of solid big league time; once the lefty opponent starting barage lets up, send down Christian with a taste of success.
Rasner and Geise can hang around as long men, or send one down for a spot. Posada’s gun doesn’t look so sharp, so keeping another catcher around doesn’t hurt yet, especially if Chad can turn into our late inning defensive sub at 1st. Can always dream, though Betemit seems to be swinging a hot bat with more regular turns at the plate, and actually looked decent around the bag at 3rd enough to give A-Rod DH day every now and then.
Looking forward to the July Homestand for the Yankees which should level things out after the April away. Expect to see the Red Sox in 3rd place in the division by August 1. Drew just isn’t Big Papi and will not carry that team through the dog days…should be fun to watch.

  835. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

How many times do we have to explain the CC situation, it’s not smart to make this move because he is a rental. It’s simple FA next yr. break bank. Even if they do get on that market the Phillies and Cubs are ready to go all in, so are the Dodgers who have better MLB ready prospects.

  836. Ollie

“How many times do we have to explain the CC situation, it’s not smart to make this move because he is a rental.”

I guess winning a title isn’t smart either?

Or getting the 2 high draft picks if he leaves?

    Huh?

I know most of you are geeks for the system and think every prospect will be Hank Aaron mixed with Bob Gibson but open your eyes.

  837. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano]

    Ponson for Cy Young!
    lol
