Game 80: Yankees at Mets

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jun 27, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

YANKEES (42-37)
Damon LF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF
Molina C
Ponson RHP

METS
Reyes SS
Castillo 2B
Wright 3B
Beltran CF
Delgado 1B
Nixon LF
Castro C
Chavez RF
Martinez RHP

Pedro Martinez (2-1, 6.57) vs. the Yankees hitters.

Sidney Ponson (4-1, 3.88) vs. the Mets hitters.

Notes: Never thought this would get posted before first pitch. Getting here was fine. Parking was the problem. … Kei Igawa is in the house. If Sir Sidney gets knocked around early, you’re going to see a lot of the K-Man.

Back later with updates. But lots of newspaper work to do first.

UPDATE, 9:04 p.m.: Sam Borden just finished his 10-mile walk and arrived at Shea Stadium. Third inning, not bad.

UPDATE, 10:10 p.m.: Sorry for the lack of updates. Three stories to do.

How about that Sidney Ponson? As I predicted, he would clearly be better than Pedro Martinez.

Seriously, it just goes to show that you can’t predict everything. Regardless of what kind of person he is, Ponson had been pitching poorly before he was released. He’s been one hit away from big trouble all night but has dived, ducked, dipped and dodged out of trouble.

UPDATE, 10;37 p.m.: So much for the demise of Bobby Abreu. … Meanwhile Kyle Farnsworth is pitching for the first time since he had the sitches. 9-0 seems safe, however.

UPDATE, 10:41 p.m.: So of course he walks the first hitter. You can’t make this stuff up.

UPDATE, 11:17 p.m.: Finally, the pefect role for the K-Man. Up 9-0. Bet he walks somebody.

Good news about no problem getting to the park. Apparently the bad news was that Igawa was there waiting for you.

  2. andy Hawkin's ghost June 27th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

..then we’ll be seeing a lot of the K-man. What’s the record for most runs scored in a double header?

  3. V (1) June 27th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

    Let’s go Sidney!!

  4. mel June 27th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

Way to go, Pete. Our fearless leader. lol.

  5. Mr Hat June 27th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Here is how a slumping team gets healthy.

Play against Giese, Ohlendorf and Ramirez.

  6. Kelvin June 27th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

This is the double header from hell for Pete.

    Igawa pitching???

  7. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

    this should be funny

  8. Denver Yank June 27th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

better yet, a bunch of yous could have taken a taxi-van.

  9. JFud81 June 27th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Just when you think it can’t get any worse.

  10. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue June 27th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

I have never been such a Sidney Ponson fan in my life. Here’s to that beef jerky giving us 6 innings of work and giving up 2 runs or less…Then PLEASE, Mr. Cashman, DFA Igawa RIGHT AFTER THE GAME…..PAH-LLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASE !

  11. Denver Yank June 27th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

what time does the game start?

  12. Barry - acigarsmoker.com June 27th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

People can’t seriously be looking to fire Girardi already? The issue is cashman.. One for not trading for Santana, and 2 for not making the adjustment this year…

We have a AAA pitching staff.. thank god for Joba or we would be done…

  13. V June 27th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Ponson gets a bad rap but he has actually pitched really well this year.

  14. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Darrell Strawberry is out of jail? Since when?

  15. Joe from Long Island June 27th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Pete – Glad you arrived safely. Parking is always a problem.

As I said in previous post, all writers and players should be complimented for professionalism for putting up with this atrocity of scheduling.

    Let’s go Yankees.

  16. Denny June 27th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

What is Girardi supposed to do with this crap pitching staff?

It’s about the players. Ask Joe T in LA.

  17. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

It sounds like its the 9th inning of the Mets winning

  18. stark June 27th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

“As I said in previous post, all writers and players should be complimented for professionalism for putting up with this atrocity of scheduling.”

I’ll cry for millionaires getting police escorts and flying charter flights first class. Are you kidding me?

  19. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 27th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

    Okay. Think optimistic.

    The score is 0-0!

We can still win this game!

  20. Jack Nicholson June 27th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

I wish I’m a mets fan. They are so much a better team than the Yankees.

  21. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

I guess Met fans take a 15 run game as them going to the World Series?

  22. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us? June 27th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Glad you made it in time Pete.

OK, that last game was a disaster. Time to move on and win this bad boy. Let’s go Ponson. Surprise me.

  23. Greg June 27th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

isn’t there supposed to be a 40 man roster move since they purchased ponson’s contract?

  24. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

    Jack Nick is a Troll

  25. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

    A bomb from A rod

  26. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 27th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Greg: they took Steven White off the 40 man sometime last week.

  27. Confucius June 27th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

One positive already. We aren’t going to be no-hit.

  28. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

    Over/Under 2 HBP by Pedro

  29. Greg June 27th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Rebecca, but that was for Justin Christian

  30. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 27th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

    …..

    Not fair.

    So. Not. Fair.

  31. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

  34. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us? June 27th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Grab your shot glasses people. Here we go! Good luck

  35. BBB June 27th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

    “Over/Under 2 HBP by Pedro”

That biatch wont be hitting anyone now that he has to bat. Thats how cowards roll.

  36. Fran June 27th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

    That was close.

  37. The Fallen Phoenix June 27th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Oh, that A-Rod; he deliberately fell short of a 1st inning home run because that would be too “clutch,” spotting the Yankees a two-run lead after a bad loss before their pitcher gets to take the mound.

This is going to be quite a ride…I’m going to hold my breath every time Sir Sidney throws a pitch.

  38. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan) June 27th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Everyone downing their first adult beverage?

Sir Sidney ready to take the mound for the Bronx Bombers…

  39. BBB June 27th, 2008 at 8:19 pm

Here we go Sid, here we go!

Oh gawd, he has even more chins than I remembered…

  40. JoeT 28 in 09!! MO FOR CY YOUNG!! FIRE CASHMAN!! June 27th, 2008 at 8:19 pm

  41. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:19 pm

    Nice pitch

  42. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 27th, 2008 at 8:19 pm

One down. Twenty Six to go.

  43. mel June 27th, 2008 at 8:19 pm

    Strap yourselves in, kiddies.

  44. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

    Whoa 2 quick outs

  45. Shame Spencer June 27th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

    niiiiice play by jeter

  46. The Fallen Phoenix June 27th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

…I would eat enough caps to satisfy Sir Sidney’s stomach if he somehow gunned twenty six more batters in a row.

I feel safe saying that because it’s not going to happen. Not even the Devil would make a deal for *that* soul…

  47. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 27th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

    Twenty five.

(Yeah. Small bites. One batter at a time. We can do this.)

  48. CaptainsCorner June 27th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

Is the golden buy Jeter ever going to have an at bat where he has patience..ever again? I mean it is a joke already. 2-0 and he swings at a borderline strike. I love how Kay always says Jeter has a 20 game or whatever hitting streak..Yeah that is nice but do it when it counts..He has had his moments this year but for the most part he had been absolutely dreadful. I don’t know what happened to the patient Jeter.

  49. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan) June 27th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

Throw strikes my brother…6 or 7 outta the Mets 9 are STIFFS.

  50. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

Castillos swing looks worse than my 5 year olds

  51. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue June 27th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

    Yankees win this game 10-0

  52. pete June 27th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

hey mr hat you forgot to mention mr latroy hawkins in your comment. although i think you should leave edwar ramirez out of your list. he has pitched good. he shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence with those other three pitchers.

  53. éí 'aaníígÓÓ 'áhoot'é' June 27th, 2008 at 8:21 pm

Pete you look like that character in WALL-E.

  54. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:21 pm

    I asked this before

    Is Sidney Ponson legally obese?

  55. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us? June 27th, 2008 at 8:21 pm

1 more out Ponson. Come on

  56. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:22 pm

How come Met fans go to Yankee Stadium for the Subway Series, but Yankee fans dont go to Shea?

  57. geO [Murderer's Row and Cano] June 27th, 2008 at 8:22 pm

    Ponson should get Bruney’d

    and lose 100 pounds

  58. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 27th, 2008 at 8:23 pm

    …And so it begins.

  59. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:23 pm

Yankee Stadium was 40% Met fans today and Shea is about 90% Met fans

  60. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue June 27th, 2008 at 8:23 pm

    I can’t look….

  61. Shame Spencer June 27th, 2008 at 8:23 pm

“How come Met fans go to Yankee Stadium for the Subway Series, but Yankee fans dont go to Shea?”

because no self respecting yankee fan would ever be caught dead in queens

  62. BBB June 27th, 2008 at 8:24 pm

Can someone refresh my memory on the rules of the Sir Sid drinking game? A BB is a shot, right?

  63. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 27th, 2008 at 8:24 pm

    Fire Girardi:

    You’ve ever been to Shea?

  64. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us? June 27th, 2008 at 8:24 pm

“How come Met fans go to Yankee Stadium for the Subway Series, but Yankee fans dont go to Shea?”

Maybe they are scared of the Shea Stadium rats?

  65. mark June 27th, 2008 at 8:24 pm

Sidney has pitched in the bigs. He really does know how to win games. Why not this one? Relax and give it a chance.

Rebecca if you were at the afternoon game I would say maybe you might want to sell any other tickets you have this season.

Mets fans are huge hypocrites. A week ago they couldn’t boo their team enough.

  66. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue June 27th, 2008 at 8:24 pm

a WALK !….I am cheering the WALK !…..( drum roll here )…..

  67. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:24 pm

    Met Fans to Delgado

This Morning: Get out of Town

Tonight: Sign him for an extension

    Typical Met Fans

  68. CaptainsCorner June 27th, 2008 at 8:24 pm

I am tired of seeing Wright hitting against the Yanks. He is a decent player and the Yanks do not pitch him right. He only hits the ball to RF and they have not yet this season pitched him inside!!! Why are they pitching him outside so he can just poke the ball to RF like he does in every at bat? I am sick of these losers hitting the Yanks..Let me guess Delgado who will not hit another homerun for 1 month will kill the Yanks in this game? Embarrassing…

  69. BBB June 27th, 2008 at 8:24 pm

“How come Met fans go to Yankee Stadium for the Subway Series, but Yankee fans dont go to Shea?”

    Cause it smells?

  70. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue June 27th, 2008 at 8:25 pm

Come on Sidney…YOU CAN DO IT ! :-)

  71. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:25 pm

    Beautiful inning by Ponson

hahahahaha Did I just hear boo’s for Delgado already?

  72. pete June 27th, 2008 at 8:25 pm

sidney ponson the season savior. lol

  73. Fran June 27th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Sidney through 1 and he even got Delgado out!

  74. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue June 27th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

More evidence that there IS a God ! ;-)

  75. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 27th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

    Three outs.

    Twenty four to go.

2008 New York Yankees, I can haz sum runs nao plz k thx?!

Staying optimistic: the score is 0-0! We can still win this game!

  76. BBB June 27th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

    Right on Sir Sid!!

  77. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan) June 27th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

    OK…decent start.
Sir Sidney Ponson Drinking Game participants (over age 21 only):
one beer before game started, one shot for the 1B…and one shot for the BB.

  78. little steven June 27th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

how has chacon not been signed yet? whats the downside?

  79. mark June 27th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

So thinking positive it would be great if Sidney gets some of the old stuff back. That plugs a hole in the rotation. Pettitte, Mussina, Joba, Ponson, Rasner (with Moeller catching him)/Giese.

  80. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us? June 27th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

    get to work bats

  81. Confucius June 27th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

“More evidence that there IS a God ! ;-)

But He’s pitched one inning. Sometimes He can only go 5.

  82. Shame Spencer June 27th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

“how has chacon not been signed yet? whats the downside?”

..could be that he choked his gm? im not an expert though.

  83. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan) June 27th, 2008 at 8:29 pm

    “Anyone speak Aruban?

    I just googled “Ponson”.

In Aruban dialect, it means “to be fat, hammered and blessed with a decent arm.”

In English, it means “to serve a six month bit in the local clink.”

Does that strike anyone as odd?”

LMAO…Ponson is our fat & drunken SP tonight, baby!!!

  84. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:29 pm

The downside to Chacon is manslaughter

  85. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Delgado getting easy ground balls and cheers like they are webgems

  86. CaptainsCorner June 27th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Note to Kay, Pedro hasn’t been good for 4 years now. Lets not make it seem like he is Pedro of 10 years ago. If the Yanks don’t hit him it is because they are tired, old or just not hitting well like they haven’t all year.

  87. mark June 27th, 2008 at 8:31 pm

Rebecca I think we’re positive. If you keep saying it it looks like you’re not. No need to worry. You’re not at the game. (ha ha)

little steven I don’t know what the Yankees are thinking about Chacon but how good can it look to sign someone who has assaulted a manager? It’s almost like an insult to the honor of the game to sign someone who pushed down his manager.

  88. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:31 pm

At least the top of the order is up next inning? Yet we have Molina and Ponson to lead off that inning

  89. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 27th, 2008 at 8:31 pm

    bronxbomber:

I had to see it first hand. So many Mets fans there. I was about ready to cry.

  90. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan) June 27th, 2008 at 8:31 pm

“The downside to Chacon is manslaughter”

On the bright side, if he “took out” Cash they’d have to bring in a new GM, right?

    (It’s a joke, people.)

  91. Nick in SF June 27th, 2008 at 8:31 pm

Pedro gets special consideration for the Hall of Fame because of the era he pitched in and because he recognized that the Yankees were his daddy.

  92. Someone Else June 27th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

    Rebecca -

    That’s because Mets fans don’t work ;-)

  93. Jeff NJ June 27th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

Funny thing about the Igawa call up is that I was listening to Feinsand on with john and Saz and he was going on and on about David Robertson, assuming he would be the next call up. Guy thinks like a blogger, guess Cash doesn’t.

  94. mark June 27th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

David Wrighht looks like he wears false teeth.

  95. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 27th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

…We’re all going to be really, uh, not sober, by the end of the evening, aren’t we?

  96. dana June 27th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

mets fans think they punched their ticket to the series after beating Giese this afternoon. I swear I thank god every day that I was born a Yankee fan. Both teams have ther fair share of annoying loser fans but I’ve never seen anything like the Met fan. What a serious inferiority complex!!

  97. Shame Spencer June 27th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

if pedro is a hall of famer is moose?

  98. Confucius June 27th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

This is a guy who thinks not mentioning a perfect game is equatable to not mentioning the holocaust. I stopped listening years ago.

  99. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan) June 27th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

“if pedro is a hall of famer is moose?”

If he leads us to a WS this year.

  100. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Lets say (I dont think they will) the Mets win 3 out of 4. They will definetly be sayiing they are the team to beat in the NL again and punching their ticket to the Series. But the funny part is, they will get swept next weekend by the Phillies and say they need a change

Met fans are bad for baseball

  101. Someone Else June 27th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

“if pedro is a hall of famer is moose?”

Pedro is the best pitcher in the HISTORY OF BASEBALL by ERA+. The peak of his career was just absolutely amazing. A 2.00 ERA in the late 90s?

  102. mark June 27th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Mulligan, your “it’s a joke people” reminded me of the Adam Grossman skit on SNL!

I can’t stand Nixon. Always been a Yankee killer.

  103. BBB June 27th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

“if pedro is a hall of famer is moose?”

Yes. He’s solidifying his case with the renaissance he is enjoying now.

Cmon Sir Sid! Keep me sober enough to still be able to spell solidifying and renaissance a few innings from now!

  104. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

If Moose gets to 300 (which I think now he will) he is an obvious HOFer. If Moose is smart he does anything and everything to get to 300

  105. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan) June 27th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

C’mon throw strikes Sir Sid…I’ll be incoherent by the 3rd at this rate.

  106. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us? June 27th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

I guess no 1-2-3 here for Ponson

  107. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

    Uh oh. Nixon and Castro?

  108. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue June 27th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

can I say aargh yet ?

  109. CaptainsCorner June 27th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Ummm Damon is playing LF because?!! Catch the f’n ball…

  110. mark June 27th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Pedro was amazing. The best control pitcher I have ever watched.

  111. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 27th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

    bronx bomber: 0-5.

    0-bleeping-5.

Note to Johnny: Sidney Ponson is on the mound. If it’s hit, you have to catch it.

  112. Someone Else June 27th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Ok, that ball was catchable by Damon.

I long for the day that the Yankees have competent outfielders.

  113. BBB June 27th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

OK, apparently he wants us all to get wasted…

  114. Angel June 27th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

“Met fans are bad for baseball”

I feel that way about some of my fellow Yankee fans.

  115. Boston Dave June 27th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

will we ever see a Yankee OF that makes a diving catch?

  116. Shame Spencer June 27th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

fire girardi, 30+ more wins is a lot for moose to get depending on what he does in the second half of this year. even if he doesnt, does that automatically mean he is out of consideration?

  117. 3 Bronx Morris Avenue June 27th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

OK…this is the end for Sidney….If HE is getting squeezed…and now he IS…then his MEAT pitches are gonna get smoked. Good night, Yankee fans. Tomorrow is another day….

  118. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 27th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

Sidney. Strike zone. Please. I can’t take much more of this.

  119. mark June 27th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

  120. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us? June 27th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

  261. TKinDC June 27th, 2008 at 9:08 pm

“Maybe Sidney should just start every inning with the bases loaded?”

Better yet- get him buzzed and just tell him the bases are loaded.

  262. mark June 27th, 2008 at 9:08 pm

It has NOTHING to do with the way Ponson is pitching. His pitching is fine. The umpires calls might be Farnsworthian though…

  263. S.A.- No pain..no gain! I still believe in this team June 27th, 2008 at 9:08 pm

    Did that just happen? wow

    Come on Bobby

  264. GreenBeret7 June 27th, 2008 at 9:08 pm

Three ugly innings, but, he’s keeping them off of the scoreboard. I’d settle for two more innings and call it a job well done. Nobody expected that much, anyway.

  265. BBB June 27th, 2008 at 9:09 pm

Also, Ponsanity is the best word EVER. It should immediately replace Vinsanity in the vocabs of every last Tri State Areaian.

  266. Drive 4-5 June 27th, 2008 at 9:09 pm

    Nick in SF,

Seeing Igawa getting up in the pen sent me to the bar quicker than Ponson on a Saturday night. Make mine a triple…straight up!

“I’d like to buy a round of Zima’s for Sir Sid and all my friends here on Lohud”

Sorry bro, gotta draw the line…Zima’s have no place on a self-respecting blog like LoHud.

  268. The Fallen Phoenix June 27th, 2008 at 9:09 pm

Pedro figured it out. Brian Cashman stomped on Chien-Ming Wang’s foot, took a sledgehammer to Phil Hughes’ ribs, roughed up Alan Horne and Ian Kennedy in a dark alley, and dropped an anvil on Jorge Posadas shoulder.

    All Brian Cashman’s fault!

  269. Al from BK June 27th, 2008 at 9:09 pm

    Ump is awful.

  270. Matt June 27th, 2008 at 9:09 pm

Hey HP ump, stop taking bribes. The 1-0 pitch to Bobby was the SAME pitch that was called a ball 2 or 3 times in a row for Ponson.

  271. Al from BK June 27th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

    Lmao….Zima!

  272. The Fallen Phoenix June 27th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Oh, and Rebecca? I wouldn’t quite call Sidney’s pitching “Farnsworthian” tonight, although he does remind me of another larger-than-average righty named Jaret Wright…

  273. Al from BK June 27th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

    Umm that was a walk.

  275. mark June 27th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Bobby Abreu is wondering how that was a strike when the umpire called the same thing a ball when Ponson threw it.

No problem nyfaninlaalaland, I thought the extra A was for… well, I didn’t really think about it. If you’re ever up there, it’s a good (but overpriced, of course) NY-style Jewish deli, I think it’s on Beverly Drive. I used to go there with my grandfather when he lived in LA and I still stop by to get my hot pastrami fix when I’m down there.

Hastings, great law school, crappy neighborhood! But congrats on your son’s making it through.

OC: nice, I lived/worked in Newport Beach for a few months back in the early 90′s. I went to one game at the Big A, it was when George Brett got his 3000th hit. Good times.

If we use Veras, Farns, and Mo (hopefully) tonight to get 4, maybe we can sneak through tomorrow too without another move. If Sid goes 5 okay, do we ship Giese out for reinforcements? It would almost have to be Robertson. Karstens is starting tonight, Igawa’s here for the the long disaster coverage. And any news on the move to make roster space for Sid? Gotta think Wang or Hughes to the 60.

I heard Sabathia is 100% absolutely going to test the free agent market. That means it’s a half season rental. There are probably a few teams that will still hand over some prospects, but I don’t think the Yankees will be one of them.

On the other hand, if this is correct, that means the Yanks can sign him if they choose to without giving any prospects this offseason.

Matt, I’ll never understand why we only signed Dotel to a 1 year deal, knowing he’d be rehabbing most of the time. Way to let the guy rehab using the Yankee facilities for free, yet without reaping any of the benefits.

So far we are getting lucky. I’ve coined Sidney with the nickname “The Aruban Abomination”, but hes gotten himself out of trouble so far. thank god, noone wants to see Kei.

I think David Cone calling Giambi “Magnum P.I.” should stick as well as my Ponson nickname.

    Great AB by Jeter there!

  404. Keith June 27th, 2008 at 9:43 pm

Pedro’s high pitch count won’t see him survive another inning. He’s not far removed from the DL.

  426. Matt June 27th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

  433. Fran June 27th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Robbie did what Alex could not in his at bat – 2 RBI for Cano tonight

  434. AsmosEyes June 27th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

How many times has Cano swung at the first pitch following a walk? I’ve lost count.

  435. Jeff NJ June 27th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Jose Molina is definitely a plus defender to Jorge right now. The best lineup in AL parks with Matsui hurt has Jorge as DH until he returns, guess that gives Jose some short term fantasy value.

  436. The Fallen Phoenix June 27th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Melky also swung at the first pitch. Unlike Cano, he missed it.

he pirates are a triple A squad, the mets have some talent and in the first game we had pelfrey on the ropes a-rod got out on a check swing gave pelfrey life and then the Yankees lost from there, this game not saying were going to lose but come on we have ponson on the mound the offense needs to get more then two sacrifice runs.. soo we can loosen the pressure and give us a sure win tonight

By the way if we split this double header i think its a moral victory for us.. Who thought we were going to win both games with one two sub-par starters

    Good for Derek….

That is one less problem we have. The only problems the yanks have is helping Cano figure things out, help melky improve his BA 20 points and OBP 30 or 40pts. Get 2 or 3 arms in the pens and they need at least 1 legit strter……..

in essence they need 4 arms……

Matty: in order to watch the Yankee games on DirecTV out of NY, you’ll have to subscribe to the MLB package. If you get the regional sports network package, you will get YES and MSG, etc., but they’ll be blacked out during the professional games. Good one on the Seth Rogan!

TKinDC: yes, I think it’s Michael Penn that she’s married to.

nyfaninlaalaland: I went to the one near the UC Irvine campus, that was the closest to wear I was working.

  523. Comedy Flava June 27th, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Sometimes for a hitter like Cano the best pitch to drive is the first pitch of the at bat. Because pitchers know you are a swinger and they don’t want to walk you. They want to start off strike one.

See what his avg looks like on Aug 1.

  524. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan) June 27th, 2008 at 10:12 pm

“Remember, we’re choosing two out of three. Rasner’s good start-bad start ratio is in imminent danger of slipping below Giese’s. The axe could strike him.”

Good point…Ras’ start is of EPIC importance to his future in Pinstripes.

  526. CaptainsCorner June 27th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

What does Cano swing at the 1st pitch 95% of the time? The problem is with him he is not looking for good pithes to hit, he is always swinging wildly at anything..He needs to swing at pitches he thinks he can hit because every team knows not to throw the 1st pitch in the strike zone since he is always hacking at it. He needs to learn some patience and when a pitch is good to hit.

    bronxbomber77 -

No apologies necessary at all – it is just banter as far as I’m concerned.

Robbie has picked up his game lately – and I personally don’t care if he gets a hit on the first pitch or the 15th – but a lot of folks have understandably gotten into pitch counts for hitters and pitchers.

he certainly could have given up 2-4 runs… but he was also dealing with a tight strike zone. I thought commanded his pitches as well as anyone could have hoped.

he’s certainly earned another start or two…

So Far..Ponson has pitched 5.1,,,given up ZERO RUNS on 5 hits, walked 4 and struck out 3…..I would say that is pretty much GREAT compared to ANY of the current Yankee Starters….wouldn’t you ?….Which of our other 4 starters pitches BETTER than that on anywhere NEAR a consistent basis ?….Huh ?….that would be NONE of them ! I am in no way saying the Ponson is the greatest…but so far tonight…he is gettin’ it done, right ????????

This season, they usually have both the home and away broadcasts for both teams, which means I’ve spent much less time watching Yankees’ opponents’ broadcasts this year than I did last year. Even though Kay & Co. get annoying, it’s still much better than the alternative most of the time.

The issue with Cano is that teams actually scout other teams.

Other pitchers know Cano does not have very good plate discipline right now. Good pitchers aren’t going to give him a pitch to hit.

If he can improve his discipline, he can be an all-star. Otherwise, he’s going to be inconsistent and frustrating to watch (because we all know how good he could be).

Posada is not a good catcher, game caller and doesn’t work good with pitchers he is not used to…BUT Rasner has been throwing absolute meatballs. Those are not Posada’s fault. Every pitch that Rasner threw that got hammered in his last couple of starts were right down the middle.

it is well known that jorge posada, while hes ok at throwing runners out when his shoulder isnt hurting and is a top hitting catcher in this league, hes a terrible recevier of the ball and game caller…its amazing how much better guys like wang and rasner are when moeller or molina are behind the plate

  612. rconn23 June 27th, 2008 at 10:33 pm

It is kinda funny. Lately, either our pitching is superb like tonight, no runs or just flat out blows up like when Rasner and Giese pitched. Before Giese and Rasner, the Yankees had a few shutouts. Can’t they pitch some of those bad ones kinda in the middle like yesterday. Giving up five runs wouldn’t be too bad.

You mean an all-star again right? b/c as you know he was an all-star in ’06 (that was the year after he came in 2nd in the rookie of the year)

and his career avg is .303

but other than that I think you hit the nail on the head.

    TKinDC,

    yes, perennial all-star.

I guess I didn’t pay enough attention when Cano was hitting .340 but I don’t remember him being this free swinging at the plate.

Even when Giambi was hitting .200, he kept the same approach. It seems like Cano has completely lost his approach to hitting. If he can be successful only seeing 1.5 pitches per AB, I’ll be just as happy. I just don’t see it.

Since Barry Bonds isn’t doing anything, maybe Cano can hire him as a hitting coach because Long isn’t getting through to the guy.

“Dave, don’t you think the scouts would have known about Cano after the first year and worked over his “weakness” before now?”

GB, I don’t remember Cano’s at bats being so similar in previous years.

Cano definitely swung at high pitches out of the zone but he’s all over the place now. It’s actually impressive that he puts some of the pitches he hits into play. If he can just learn to take those pitches, he’ll be in great shape.

  657. Fran June 27th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

    Boston Dave,

Thanks. Trust me. I’m critical of players, such as Melky, Cano – a few others, but I would love, love, love for them to make me look foolish and start absolutely crushing the ball.

Hopefully Cano is on that track.

  662. Doreen June 27th, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Can you IMAGINE the $M$ Farnsworth has made by just throwing straight beans and never using his brain.
Amazing, 97 with no movement..how about taking off 3-4 mph and adjusting your grip or arm angle slightly for more movement so you’re not so damn hitable?

  666. mark June 27th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Sunny are you watching the game? Did you see the dude’s hand taped up? I don’t know if I would call someone pitching with a stitched taped hand useless. Maybe gutsy.

  667. CaptainsCorner June 27th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Maybe he should get more stitches..Maybe he pitches better with them?! Or is it because it is 9-0? I will go with it is because of the score.

  668. Scorpio June 27th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

A-Rod ain’t always clutch but I would never call him “meaningless”. All you need to do is look back at the team during his DL stint. A-Rod is very important to this team. He’s the leader in A.L. batting average right now, too.

Gutsy indeed. Farnsworth is a BAMF. I knew he would not go on the DL unless there was bone damage or something. You gotta give him that, he is tough as nails. I don’t worry about his webbing at all. He’ll be ok. I do worry about him throwin strikes, but thats about it!

  671. Boston Dave June 27th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

    GB,

from 16 to 18, then they went up when he played a full season.

there is virtually no chance that his walks go up this season.

and regardless, he’s averaging just over 20 walks per season (if you prorate his 2008)

Anyway, pretty good inning for him all things considered. Maybe just shaking off the rust of not pitching in 5 days with that initial BB. But he worked around it which is big for him, and preserved Ponson’s shutout

Kei Igawa should be the one pitching the next 2 innings, not Veras.

  686. GreenBeret7 June 27th, 2008 at 10:53 pm

Dave, as long as Cano’s walks keep going up and strikeouts keep going down, whether “pro-rated” or not, and he hits .315-.320 every year, and gets his 90 plus RBI and 190 hits, with that glove, the Yankees and fans have no reason to complain.

  687. Groundhoggator June 27th, 2008 at 10:54 pm

With Ponson’s start, you can now shift Giese to long relief in the bullpen and DFA Hawkins for either Robertson or Cox and send Kei back to Scranton.

  692. BBB June 27th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

If Ponson doesnt get another start in 5 days, Girardi smokes crack. Very open and shut if you ask me. Although I still might consider giving Giese more starts in the future also, as someone wrote before I want to see Moeller catch Ras in his next start, and if he doesnt improve maybe he should be the one to go to the pen for long relief.

Either way, as long as the Yanks dont rush IPK back up I’ll be fine. Let him have his few weeks in the minors once he is activated, he is too important to our future whether as a starter or trade bait to mess with his development. He was rushed this season as it was.

“Dave, as long as Cano’s walks keep going up and strikeouts keep going down, whether “pro-rated” or not, and he hits .315-.320 every year, and gets his 90 plus RBI and 190 hits, with that glove, the Yankees and fans have no reason to complain.”

He aint hittin .315 this season. And he aint hit .315 next season unless he improves his plate discipline (though his last 2 AB’s haven’t been too bad)

I’m not saying he still wouldn’t be a decent 2b with his D and hitting .260. But we all know he’s capable of much more.

  755. Mark (Free Brett Campaign) June 27th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

Just got back from the SI Yankees game tonight. Great atmosphere, and great game. Jack Rye had a big night, drafted out of FSU. I think it might have been his first game with Staten Island. Had 3 hits tonight. Then the real story was of course Pat Vendette. He came into a 3-3 game in the top of the 8th with a man on 2nd, and 2 outs, and got an out. Staten Island got a run on an error in the bottom of the 8th. Vendette then came out for the 9th, after back to back awful erros by his infielders which Hudson Valley had 1st and 2nd, then they had a sac bunt with 1 out and 2nd and 3rd, but Pat got the job done getting a pop up to the 3rd baseman, and then a grounder to short to end it. Pat Vendette got the win.

  788. MoBoy June 27th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

    Nick in SF-

My english needs work.I never said Joba to the rotation wasn’t a good thing. But you have to admit the “Plan” wasn’t for Joba to go in the rotation in early JUne.And I would think the Yankees should have had insurance before hand in the 8th or 7th even 6th inning.

This is why like I said you don’t start the season with three rookies to anchor the rotation.I know you are the people who thought Hughes was gonna win 15 games and be our #3 pitcher.Again thats living in fantasy land. And thats why our rotation and bullpen is bad.

But thanks to Joba our rotation is not Horrible just bad. They need a trade.100%

  789. TKinDC June 27th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

  790. Mark (Free Brett Campaign) June 27th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Nick in Sf- Vendette did not pitch from both sides. Hudson Valley sent up all righties, but it was cool watching him warm up in the bullpen.

That one didn’t hurt me too much because:

-coming off three championships, four in five years
-the comeback in the ALDS, w/ Jeter flip
-crushing the Mariners (I still hated the franchise for ’95, but I really hated that Mariner team)
    -Tino & Brosius

I rank ’04 and Kenny Rogers ahead of ’01.

  793. Nick in SF June 27th, 2008 at 11:34 pm

MoBoy, I’ve said several times, I think the timetable on Joba’s transition was moved forward because of the disasters that were Hughes and Kennedy. But it would have happened anyway, just a little later.

They didn’t start the season with three rookies to anchor the rotation. They started the season with Wang, Petttite, and Moose to anchor the rotation, with two rookies at the back end. The rookies both bombed and both got hurt and Wang got hurt in a freak accident.

  794. ripcord June 27th, 2008 at 11:34 pm

  795. S.A.- No pain..no gain! I still believe in this team June 27th, 2008 at 11:35 pm

It arrived in the top of the seventh inning of Game 1 of the Mets-Yankees double dip, after the SNY announcers discussed what a nice job Alex Rodriguez is doing playing third base.

    Take it away, Gary Cohen:

“Of course the thing that the Yankees never talk about is the fact that A-Rod is still twice the shortstop that Jeter is, but you’re not allowed to say that here.”

    http://blogs.trb.com/sports/watchdog/blog/

  796. Ollie June 27th, 2008 at 11:36 pm

Joba’s timetable was laid out last November. Kennedy and Hughes could have been lights out and they were still moving him at that exact time.

They treat these kids with the utmost care. You really think they bumped something that important up? It makes perfect sense for when they did it. Now he’ll finish with just about 150 innings come Oct 1.

  797. Mark (Free Brett Campaign) June 27th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

  802. TKinDC June 27th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

More proof that the Yanks didn’t move Joba into the rotation too early (at least in their minds/plans) is the fact that he was allowed to pitch 114 pitches last start

If they were worried – no way that would have happened

  803. Ollie June 27th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

    Use common sense.

He’s a 22 year old pitcher. An ace pitcher. The highest commodity in the game. You really think they didn’t set this plan up last November? Down to the T?

It is way too important to mess with. They lined it up perfectly if you check all the innings and assume what he will throw the rest of the year. They worked it out and covered every base.

It was win win for them. If the other two kids pitched well it would be a huge bonus. If they didn’t he was coming for help.

One huge flaw in the plan. No one to take his place in the pen. Thanks Farny.

  804. GreenBeret7 June 27th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

I’m not going too excited with Ponson’s start tonight, only because I’d rather wait for repeat performances. He pitched pretty well in Texas because even though he gave up a lot of hits, he kept the ball in the park and kept his walks to a minimum. If he does that, this could be a Chacon/Small type pickup. It will be agonizing to watch at times, but, so far this year, you can’t dispute the results.

  805. Eugie June 27th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

    Nick in SF-

Pettitte was on the DL to start the season last year with a very known balky elbow.WAng has seen the DL last year and the year before that. And Mussina is coming off a over 5 Era year at age 39.Mussina never has one 20 games in a year and I doubt he can keep it up without going a 5 inning game every start only.

See Cano you knew was gonna hit better because he unlike most of our young pitchers has proven he belongs over one season.HUghes and Kennedy hasn’t proven that.

They need a trade in the rotation and bullpen. Can’t say thats not true.

Ponson may be a fat alcoholic with an anger management problem, but if he can at least pitch decently, keep him in the rotation for now. He’s a better option than some of these career minor leaguers we’re throwing out there.

Also, one reporter just asked Ponson if he got a haircut today… great questions.

If the Yankees keep getting in situations where the starter gets them behind early, or if the starter gives the lead up and more early it will demoralize the offense and they`ll struggle. It pays to make the move to CC now

Just got done with a TIVO fest of todays Yankees. Think the Yankees should keep Ponson and Igawa on the roster. Olly and Matsui to the DL make the room. With Matsui on the DL it also clears room for a left handed bat. So call up Gardner for 2 weeks of solid big league time; once the lefty opponent starting barage lets up, send down Christian with a taste of success.
Rasner and Geise can hang around as long men, or send one down for a spot. Posada’s gun doesn’t look so sharp, so keeping another catcher around doesn’t hurt yet, especially if Chad can turn into our late inning defensive sub at 1st. Can always dream, though Betemit seems to be swinging a hot bat with more regular turns at the plate, and actually looked decent around the bag at 3rd enough to give A-Rod DH day every now and then.
Looking forward to the July Homestand for the Yankees which should level things out after the April away. Expect to see the Red Sox in 3rd place in the division by August 1. Drew just isn’t Big Papi and will not carry that team through the dog days…should be fun to watch.

How many times do we have to explain the CC situation, it’s not smart to make this move because he is a rental. It’s simple FA next yr. break bank. Even if they do get on that market the Phillies and Cubs are ready to go all in, so are the Dodgers who have better MLB ready prospects.

I guess winning a title isn’t smart either?

Or getting the 2 high draft picks if he leaves?

    Huh?

I know most of you are geeks for the system and think every prospect will be Hank Aaron mixed with Bob Gibson but open your eyes.
