The Yankees have put OF Hideki Matsui (left knee) on the 15-day disabled list. RHP Sidney Ponson has been added to the roster.

RHP Ross Ohlendorf was optioned to Scranton and LHP Kei Igawa was recalled. He will be at Shea Stadium.

I’m off to Queens and will report back later.

    Lovely.

  2. yankswin27 June 27th, 2008 at 6:41 pm

    wow no robertson

  3. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 6:41 pm

    Igawa? Come on Cashman

  4. yankswin27 June 27th, 2008 at 6:41 pm

at least ohlendorf is sent down for awhile … but igawa?

  5. mel June 27th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

If Ponson gets hurt in the first inning, Igawa can reprise his great performance against Boston.

Yankees are going to win tonight. Losing is not an option.

  6. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

    Is Ponson legally Obese?

  7. Kevin June 27th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

Oh noes…. Igawa wasn’t the one I expected to be back.

Although I’m still split as to whether I would want him or Ponson to start.

  8. Matt June 27th, 2008 at 6:43 pm

We need a long reliever, and a lefty. Our bullpen is toast if we don’t have a long reliever in a double header.

  9. Liz June 27th, 2008 at 6:43 pm

    Sigh.

  10. Fire Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 6:43 pm

Were not losing this second game. Shutout baby.

  11. Doreen June 27th, 2008 at 6:43 pm

Seriously, at this point, could Igawa do any worse than a few people?

Not a fun afternoon, for sure.

Didn’t read any game comments and won’t, don’t need to.

I thought Carlos Delgado was toast??!!

  12. gayle June 27th, 2008 at 6:43 pm

I would imagine Kei is the long guy in back of Ponson, remember they dont hae a long guy and they cant use all the bullpen in one day and being as Ollie ate some innings albeit he stunk.

  13. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us? June 27th, 2008 at 6:43 pm

    Oh my gawd

  14. Martin June 27th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

After watching our putrid pitching give up 15 runs to the Mets, the news out of the front office is that Kei Igawa has been promoted. You can’t make this stuff up.

  15. mel June 27th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Hey! Stop grumbling! You guys asked for a lefty, you got a lefty.

C’mon guys. We can only go up from here. Positive vibes. Good thoughts.

  16. Kill-Schill(ing) June 27th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

Igawa? Cashman you stubborn, blinkered, arrogant, SOB. SHAME ON YOU!!!

If you’re much ballyhooed farm reconstruction is what you profess it to be, where the heck are Robertson and Melancon?

IGAWA?? You’re intrasigence is beginning to sicken me and long for a change upstairs. My only fear is that they might replace you with something worse.

Have you become so intent on vindicating your Igawa folly, that you can longer see the matter rationally?

  17. Confucius June 27th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

Brian … when I made that comment about Igawa being able to handle the Mets’ 7-8-9?

    I was kidding.

  18. Josh June 27th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

Ross could use the minor league wake up call probably and he just pitched, but Igawa? not Karstens or Traber but Igawa? Wow…

  19. Austin June 27th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

“Although I’m still split as to whether I would want him or Ponson to start”

I’d take Ponson seven days a week and twice on Sundays

  20. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us? June 27th, 2008 at 6:47 pm

    OK…happy thoughts.
Maybe Ponson will get the job done. Pitch a no hitter and the Yanks win 22-0.
    Yeah baby!
    :P

  21. munchabuncha June 27th, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Well it could be worse. Somehow. I’ll try to think of how, but … wow. After his last time up I really thought we had seen the last of Igawa.

Olendorf isn’t a surprise. Not DFA’ing Hawkins is. Why not bringing up a new face? I know there is the roster problem, but I can’t see the Yankees sticking with Hawkins.

I know there are limited moves that can be made, but still, this doesn’t seem like one of the smartest of moves.

I wonder how lopsided the score tonight will be. Maybe it will set a record.

  22. mel June 27th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Stop slacking, Pete. Where’s the lineup?

  23. farnsworthy June 27th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

genius moves by cashman! the team is falling back to .500 and what does cashman do? promote igawa and ponson. Genius!

  24. YankeesLuv June 27th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Well we just have to go for the split tonight. Hopefully Ponson can pitch somewhat decently, fingers crossed. What’s Carl Pavano doing these days? Yes I asked, no one laugh please. :(

  25. Martin June 27th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Igawa, Farnsworth, Ohlendorf, Ramirez, Hawkins, Giese, Rasner, Ponson, Kennedy. Eeewww. I just got that throw-up taste in my mouth.

  26. munchabuncha June 27th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Maybe the best thing to do is hope for a rain out.

  27. munchabuncha June 27th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

I think Pavano would be welcome compared to Igawa and Ponson.

  28. Reed June 27th, 2008 at 6:53 pm

From bad to worse with Igawa. Gluttons for punishment. Perhaps Cashman wants to see the very lowest of the low points achieved in one fell swoop.

  29. Nick in SF June 27th, 2008 at 6:54 pm

    “Is Ponson legally Obese?”

I don’t think Ponson is legally anything.

  30. farnsworthy June 27th, 2008 at 6:54 pm

No reliable relievers, starters, still no real 1B. What exactly does cashman do nesides stock up on “promising arms” ?… cashman is not getting results and should not be back next year.

  31. Martin June 27th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

It’s bad when you’re hoping they just beat you and don’t completely embarrass you twice in 10 hours. My brother-in-law is a Mets fan…I’ve got a long night ahead of me.

  32. YankeesLuv June 27th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Pavano is not that bad of a pitcher, he has to be better than what we saw today. If only we could keep him upright. :(

  33. frenetic June 27th, 2008 at 6:57 pm

So he’s now called up two guys who’ve done mediocre in AAA in favor of a guy who’s obliterated the competition (Robertson) Hilarious.

  34. V June 27th, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Hank is going to destroy Cashman publicly after this weekend. Hopefully that will end any chance of his contract being renewed as GM of the New York Yankees.

We need to get a smart young GM similar to Theo Epstein.

  35. 86w183 June 27th, 2008 at 6:58 pm

There are few options with the current state of the 40-man roster. Personally, I owuld be fine with DFA Hawkins and calling up Robertson. I also think Edward needs to go down with Ohlendorf and see if both get get consistent work in a consistent role and rebuild their confidence. They need Britton to get off the DL so they can swap Edwar with someone already on the 40-man.

That’s why Igawa got the call… plus he can give you some length.. it may be bad length, but right now they need someone to throw 6 or more innings.

Anyone else concerned watching Justin Christian wet himself today? I know it was his first day in the big park, but wow, those were some ugly at bats.

Now let us all move away from the ledge… it was one game.. and realy just three lousy innings. Anyone rational person looking at the pitching matchups for this four game series would be quite content with a split.

  36. YanksFanMan June 27th, 2008 at 6:58 pm

This has to be one of the signs of the apocalypse for this Yankees team. Ponson and Igawa, that’s like Pestilence and Famine, right?

  37. V June 27th, 2008 at 7:00 pm

Mike is killing the Yankees on WFAN right now. I love it.

  38. Bob(the original) June 27th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

So we gonna see Igawa in the second or third inning tonight?

Might as well let him eat up all the innings in this inevitable blow out.

Knew all along this day was gonna be ugly. Can’t wait for it to be over and we can have a real major league pitcher start for us tomorrow.

  39. munchabuncha June 27th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

Is it the money spent on Igawa that keeps bringing him back up, then promptly sent back down??? I really don’t get it.

Watch, Igawa will pitch brilliantly for this game. A broken clock is right twice a day.

Or maybe Ponson will bring his bottle of lightning, err, his lightning in a bottle…

  40. Jerome June 27th, 2008 at 7:02 pm

I’m NOT going to watch Ponson pitch. He stinks. I hate him, I hate him, I hate him. The Yankees need to get that Cleveland pitcher or they’re going to lose. They need that Cleveland pitcher now!

  41. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 27th, 2008 at 7:02 pm

Wow They are saying the Yankees still haven’t left ys yet.

I had Mike on for all of 30 seconds. He made me sick he needs to grow up.

  42. kd June 27th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

We’re facing Pedro tonight. How many Yankees will he hit? My guess is at least Jeter and Posada.

  43. V June 27th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

“I’m NOT going to watch Ponson pitch. He stinks. I hate him, I hate him, I hate him. The Yankees need to get that Cleveland pitcher or they’re going to lose. They need that Cleveland pitcher now!”

    So go away already.

  44. farnsworthy June 27th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

Justin Christian… what a joke of a player! There’s Gardner hitting over .290 and on pace for 60+ steals but he’s not with the team, instead there’s justin christian… wow. Cashman has a great mind!

Robertson and Cox in the minors, instead EDWARGO RAMIROZ and Roz Ohlendork are allowed to blow game after game. That cashman… what a smart apple.

Cashman is only living off promise, not actual results.

  45. ERâ„¢ (The Last Yankee Fanâ„¢) June 27th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

    Sweep!

    This team is so god-awful.

Nevertheless, I will continue to root for you, Yanks, as I have for the last 27 years

  46. Eugie June 27th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

UNREAL!! IGAWA AND PONSON!! WATCH OUT MLB HERE COME THE YANKEES!

  47. Bob(the original) June 27th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

I don’t want to watch this game either.

Not only does Ponson stink, but he is such a vile human being that it sickens me to have to root for him to do well.

  48. munchabuncha June 27th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

Bob, the only trouble is by tomorrow the position players will be out of it, so more no hitting with RISP.

  49. Hot Stove June 27th, 2008 at 7:04 pm

225 mill doesn’t buy what it used to pitching wise.

    Giese, Rasner, Ponson, Igawa

    Terrific

  50. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us? June 27th, 2008 at 7:04 pm

The Yanks are still at YS? They need to chop chop and get going to queens.

  52. Nev's June 27th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Don’t worry Cashman haters. He will be gone in October after this putrid team finishes 3rd.

  53. Don Vito A. Bellamo June 27th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

I am officially not watching any more Yankee baseball until that buck toothed SOB is off this team. Putting Igawa back on this team…even for ONE GAME…FOR ANY REASON shows me that Cashman is in idiot. TOTAL 100% MORON…..The ONLY way he pitches AT ALL,,,is if the Yankees are losing 20-0…..and really, Brian, do you think that the Yankees stink THAT BAD ?……Nevermind all the arms that you have in the minors that could BENEFIT from a trip to the show….nevermind that promoting one of THEM instead and they get free medical and dental benefits for LIFE…Send Kei Igawa up again and see how many TRUE YANKEE Fans begin, continue or start to HATE YOUR GUTS, dude….TRULY STUPID and I, for one, am done with you. Cashman…pack your bags and take your bag of tricks ANYWHERE else. They’ll love you in San Diego dude….that will be right up your alley…YA DOLT ! :-(

  54. GreenBeret7 June 27th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Jesus….The board looks like a bunch of 4th graders have infested it. Along with the mentally stunted trolls and the baseball wizards complaining about rodriguez homering, I’m not sure which is more pathetic. Perhaps if some of the others would drive in more meaningless runs, the Yanks might win a few games more.

  55. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Will Sidney Ponson save us? June 27th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

“Nevertheless, I will continue to root for you, Yanks, as I have for the last 27 years”

LOL! Bless ya for making me laugh ER.

  56. ANSKY June 27th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

Before he gets sent down, can Edwar Ramirez be ordered to teach that change-up to anyone else on the team who can actually throw other pitches, and would know enough to use it for only 10-20% of their pitches?

Add that thing to the repertoires of Mariano, Joba, Pettitte, Hughes, Wang etc (or call it an ‘upgrade’ to any change-ups they may already have) and you’ll have some teams whining about Yankee dominance as much as (well almost as much as) a typical Red Sox fan.

  57. Paul June 27th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

How to cope with negative thoughts and avoid depression.
    Avoid Jumping to Conclusions:
Example- Chuck is waiting for his date at a restaurant. She’s now 20 minutes late. Chuck laments to himself that he must have done something wrong and now she has stood him up. Meanwhile, across town, his date is stuck in traffic.

Example #2-Bases are loaded. Yanks are behind 3. ARod is up.
    sigh.

  58. Confucius June 27th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

Look on the bright side. After we drop this next one 22-3, we’re set up for the rest of the weekend:

    Andy Pettitte, then …

    … never mind.

  59. farnsworthy June 27th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

  61. JB June 27th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

At least they didn’t lose a close one.

  62. BG June 27th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

It seems like half of the people here latch on to a couple of names and harp on why they aren’t called up whenever a move is made. There’s no understanding of situational needs. Its the backend of a doubleheader. We need a starter and a long reliever. Ponson is the starter. Igawa is serving as the long reliever in case Ponson fails. Robertson is not an option for that role. Maybe Karstens would be. Given the option between Karstens or Igawa, who cares who they pick?

They need to settle the starting pitching first. Olendorff is down now for at least ten days. Igawa is an insurance policy if Ponson gets knocked around and is pulled early. They have 7 starters on the roster now (Mussina, Pettite, Joba, Rasner, Giese, Ponson, Igawa). At least one of those guys will be sent down in the next week. That’s likely when they will think about bringing Robertson or Cox up. For now we need them all.

  63. V June 27th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

jennifer, why is what mike is saying make you sick? he is dead on. the NEW YORK YANKEES cannot have two guys named Giese and Ponson pithing a doubleheader against the Mets.

he is wrong on a lot of things, but he’s dead on here. that was a pathetic display, and cashman responds with igawa!!??

  64. Don Vito A. Bellamo June 27th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

oh, and on my way out, I have one last thing to say…..ER, you are a complete idiot and a total moron. Why don’t you go back to pre-school and re-learn your ABC’s ???

  72. farnsworthy June 27th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

Cashman expects ponson, rasner, and igawa to fill for wang. No need for sabathia or any reliable starter. None at all.

  73. Andy June 27th, 2008 at 7:10 pm

    We all get it, BG.

    We’re not “harping” on names.

It’s just that NOBODY WANTS TO SEE IGAWA’S BUCK TEETH.

    Thank you for understanding.

  74. Steve Dave June 27th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Cashman got lucky 3 years ago with Small and Leiter and Chacon.

Not so lucky with Rasner and Giese and Ponson this year.

Going to cost him his job.

    farnsworthy: who’d they draft?

  76. YanksFanMan June 27th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

    4 Horsemen of the Yankpocalypse

    Ponson
    Igawa
    Hawkins
    Farnsworth

If these 4 appear on your team from the northern sky at the same time, they only leave doom and despair in their wake.

    Be scared Yankees fans…be scared.

  77. Igawa's buck teeth June 27th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

just when you thought it couldnt get any worse

  78. Dee June 27th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

I can’t stand Igawa either, but what other options do they have after burning the bullpen this afternoon? Cox and Robertson may sound good on paper but they may not want to screw up their transition by trotting them out to the majors for the first time under the heightened attention and scrutiny of a subway series game.

6/27/08 is on its way to becoming a real low point of this Yankee season. Losing 15-5 at home (and in a sweep by the way b/c we lost the first two of that original series) and we have to resort to putting Ponson and Igawa in pinstripes. Big SIGH and shaking my head….

  79. V June 27th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

I hope Hank destroys Cashman. Just tears him to shreds. He’s gotten too arrogant in his ways and thinks this team is building for the future when Jeter just turned 34 the other day.

  80. Steve Dave June 27th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Kennedy will end up costing Cashman his job.

His injury is a joke. He is just getting his head together in Tampa. My buddy in the Front Office said they are all stunned that he is so mentally weak and soft.

  81. GreenBeret7 June 27th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. :)

Yankees offense, we need ya today to pound Pedro.
We might actually win this game people. Let’s not write it off as a loss just yet. I am not jumping up with joy over Ponson and Igawa, but let’s just see what happens.

  101. Fran June 27th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

Igawa was brought up as a long reliever for tonight. If he’s in, that probably means Ponson was knocked out and so the game would probably be a lost cause by then anyway.

  102. Confucius June 27th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

“I think Francesca is hammered on YES right now. Wow.”

He must be. He said Arroyo would be a bad move.

“v- I don’t know what they are so excited about. If they couldn’t hit the pitches thrown up there, than they should all just retire. The should have won that game.”

How are they going to win the game giving up 15 runs, imbecile?

  104. Martin June 27th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

    V,

I missed Mike. I forgot he was on between games. What’d he say?

  105. sunny615 June 27th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

If you’re reading this Cashman – Igawa is NOT THE ANSWER!!!

  106. mel June 27th, 2008 at 7:19 pm

I’m really torn. I like to win, but you wonder what it’d be like to get the top pick in the draft. Evan Longoria just put the Rays up 3-0.

  107. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan) June 27th, 2008 at 7:19 pm

“Igawa is better than Ramirez. Go away, already.”

Igawa > Ramirez (from your mouth to the pitching Gods ears)…’cause NO Yankee Fan in da world believes that BS.

  110. Rick June 27th, 2008 at 7:19 pm

The only reason I can figure the Yankees are bringing up Ponson and the likes of him are that they are gun shy to bring up some of the real prospects until they are sure they have a chance of success.Cashman doesn’t want a repeat of Hughes and Kennedy.

  111. Pepitone June 27th, 2008 at 7:19 pm

I agree with all of you that believe Igawa stinks, however, aren’t there scouts, coaches, and personell men out there looking for talent? Someone came to Cash and told him that Igawa was worth all the millions, that he was capable of pitching in the bigs, and pitching well. I would like to know who that was, where is he now, and what possessed him to believe Igawa was Major League material?
I can’t really blame the Yankees for giving Igawa another try, good grief, they spent enough for him, I’m sure they are thinking, “We gotta get somthing out of the guy.” But, it’s like trying to start a lighter, how many times are they going to flick it until they realize it has no fluid?
I mean, if he doesn’t work this time isn’t the Igawa experiement over?

  112. GreenBeret7 June 27th, 2008 at 7:19 pm

right, Stevie. Kennedy was so mentally fragile last september.

Wait, the man-love that Mike had for Bronson is no more? Oh no. Maybe Chacon will take that spot? :P

  115. farnsworthy June 27th, 2008 at 7:20 pm

I believe you! Kennedy has no injury. He is a fragile little man. I love that “make them look stupid” comment and his next start he was made to look stupid by ML hitters. Seems like AAAA player to me. Even rasner has better stuff.

  116. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan) June 27th, 2008 at 7:20 pm

“Hopefully ponson dies of cardiac arrest tonight so we won’t have to put up with his bs anymore.”

Now THAT is morbidly funny…this just in, Marshawn Lynch has a helluva FB.

  123. Steve Dave June 27th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

That is why the front office is shocked he is so fragile. Because they were so impressed with him after last season’s call up.

They can’t believe it. Either can I.

But if you believe his “injury”, I wish you well. I defy you to even find out what this mysertious “injury” is. Hamstring? No. Rib?? No. Arm? No.

They just wanted to give him a mental vacation. They still believe in him but the patience is wearing thin.

  124. V June 27th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

@Martin. He’s still on right now. He’s just saying that the Yankees are fooling themselves with these pitchers. Too many guys who can’t pitch.

Everything he’s saying is true. This is ridiculous. Look at what the Yankees are putting out there. The Mets made it look like we had softball pitchers up there.

Giese, Ohlendorf, Hawkins, Ponson, Igawa. That’s what we’re gonna see today. I’m calling it Black Friday going forward.

  125. Nate June 27th, 2008 at 7:24 pm

I hope Joba, Andy and Moose can win every single start the rest of the way.

  128. pat June 27th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

“We’re facing Pedro tonight. How many Yankees will he hit? My guess is at least Jeter and Posada.”

If Pedro hits Posada tonight, he’s getting suspended for a long time because Jorge will likely be sitting on the bench.

  129. sunny615 June 27th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

the yanks were counting too much on the future arms this year – hughes/kennedy/joba – all with serious innings limits. When both Hughes and IPK went down, there were no options in AAA to fill the gap. I understand next year that won’t be as big a problem, but this year, it surprising Cash had no backup plan…

(B/C I’m not considering Giese or Rasner as viable backups)

  130. Barclay June 27th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

I hope the prospects down there are better than Hughes and IPK.

  131. V June 27th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

  140. Billy Bo June 27th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Make sure your son is left handed.

  141. CaptainsCorner June 27th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Ummm..April fools in June??!!..You have to be F’N kidding me. WHAT IS IGAWA SUPPOSED TO DO FOR THIS TEAM??!?!!! The last time we saw him what did he give up 10 runs in 3 innings?? Cashman has seriously got to be kidding me. Cashmoron bring up someone under the age of 25 that can actually pitch!! Not this idiot. I can be at the stadium at 8 and pitch for the Yanks and I only charge a small amount. This is really embarrassing. Igawa, Ponson, Giese, Rasner what kind of starting rotation is this..Tonight is going to be another 12-4 game.

  142. Eugie June 27th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

“ok positive spin here. Igawa pitches well giving Cashman a window to trade him for someone who could actually help the team.”

no. Girardi would put him into the rotation and play him for a month or two.

  143. Cool Hand Luke June 27th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Usually it takes a half season for some new guy to Ed Whitson himself in NY.

Kennedy and Igawa did it real quick.

  144. DFox June 27th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

It doesn’t really matter that Igawa was called up… The bottom line for the game tonight is Ponson. If he gives them a decent start, they’ll probably win the game. If he gets knocked out in the first, whether it’s him or Igawa, they are probably going to lose. If Ponson is good, then you have Rivera locked and loaded for two innings, you don’t need much more than that to win the game, and you have to believe the Yankees will manage to score some runs of Pedro.

  145. Guiseppe Franco June 27th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

That’s a bunch of BS with Kennedy.

If it was just a mental thing, he’d be pitching in Scranton and mowing down hitters to get his mojo and mental game back.

They wouldn’t have him wasting time sitting and doing nothing and not logging innings.

What purpose would that possibly serve? He’s not going to get his mental game back up to par by sitting and thinking about how bad he was for nearly two months.

Go make up some more stories because you’ve spewed enough BS to fertilize my lawn for the summer.

  146. TT Boy June 27th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

I vowed never to watch the game if Igawa was anywhere close to pitching in it.

I guess I have to catch the Hulk or get drunk ina bar with no tv’s.

  149. Steve Dave June 27th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

    Believe what you want.

But Kennedy was sent down with that mysterious injury because it was all mental. They are fixing his head.

They are working him over from the ground up because they know and have seen he can do it.

  150. BG June 27th, 2008 at 7:34 pm

“The only reason I can figure the Yankees are bringing up Ponson and the likes of him are that they are gun shy to bring up some of the real prospects until they are sure they have a chance of success.Cashman doesn’t want a repeat of Hughes and Kennedy”

I’m not sure who you are talking about assuming you mean other minor league starters. Horne? McCutchen? Aceves?

I suspect Aceves will be up soon enough if they don’t get more than they’ve been getting from Rasner or Giese. Horne’s just coming back from injury and is trying to find his rhythmn still. McCutchen has been inconsistent in AAA.

These guys have better arms than Giese and Rasner, but they aren’t seasoned yet. And its highly debatable whether they have better arms than Ponson who at least once was a pretty good prospect for the O’s. Besides it being questionable whether you’d get better pitching from them at this stage of their careers, you also risk stunting their growth and really hurting their trade value at the deadline. We all are hoping that they’ll make some acquisitions and not have to trade Hughes, AJAX, Melancon, Brackman, etc. Do we really want to risk lowering the value of McCutchen or Horne who are probably two of our better midlevel prospects that we can offer?

I think it might be the same idea that’s keeping Gardner in AAA. I think they are trying to maximize his value hoping someone views him as a major league ready nice prospect at trade deadline. I seriously doubt he’d be in our long-term plans, especially with AJAX playing well in AA so his best value is probably as a trade chip.

  151. MrMulligan (Ponson / Igawa Fan) June 27th, 2008 at 7:34 pm

“ok positive spin here. Igawa pitches well giving Cashman a window to trade him for someone who could actually help the team.”

  152. farnsworthy June 27th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Guiseppe Franco – just like when he made those guys “look stupid” ?? then a week later, he’s getting bombed in the majors! Then what? send him back to minors? This is why you don’t sign midgets.

  153. Magnusson Park June 27th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

I really don’t think it is really out of the realm of possibility that Kennedy is out of NY because of a mental issue and not physical.

The guy is a rookie. He was shell shocked.

  154. Drive 4-5 June 27th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Igawa back????? No more excuses. Brian Cashman should be ashamed of himself when Kei Igawa is the crown jewel of Scranton. We’ve been embarrassed enough. Hopefully Igawa brought Cashman’s resignation with him.

GREAT LINE…made even better by the fact that the newbies won’t get it…too bad Billy’s not here to kick IPK & Igawa’s a** (and then smack Griff Jr. for being a crybaby).

  159. Guiseppe Franco June 27th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

    That’s BS.

The best way to get Kennedy’s mental game back up to snuff is having him work through his game in Scranton and mowing hitters down like he’s done before.

Having him sit for two months will do nothing for his mental game.

It will only hurt him because he has no positive stimuli and results to get his mojo back.

Sounds like you are making stories up as you go.

  160. munchabuncha June 27th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Giese and Rasner might be fine as relief pitchers, innings eaters for starters who don’t go deep, but really they aren’t real starters. Igawa might have a good game or two, but that is an abberition.

The Yankees losing Wang should have changed the way Cashman is looking at things, while it is still a bit early for talking trades, I would have to think he is getting a little ill watching games like today. He doesn’t necessarily have to replace Wang so much as get a decent starter. The 5th spot can be patchwork till someone claims it.

Its just really bad timing though, for the House that Ruth Built to seemingly crumble in its last season.

I don’t care if the Yankees go after CC or anyother top line pitcher, but they need to make a trade for at least a 3 or 4 pitcher.

  161. Will K June 27th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Here is what concerns me most about Igawa coming up.

Now he won’t get a chance to pitch in the AAA All Star game. He is going to be so upset.

I love how our scouts recommended signing him. Why didn’t they tell us Scranton needed a lefty starter? Would have been nice to tell us the truth.

  162. Dee June 27th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Call me a groupie but I would have loved to be there to follow that police-escorted bus ride of the Yankees from the Bronx to Queens earlier.

On a more seriously note, does it mean Godzilla now won’t be there for the ASG? Last time I checked he was 2nd in votes for the DH spot and if Ortiz is still out by then Hideki could be the starter. Man all these dreadful news today…not good.

  163. farnsworthy June 27th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

You don’t think it hurt his ego when he made those AAA players “look stupid” then a week later, he’s being destroyed by MLB players? Send him back to the minors! He would probably go into depression. What a weak minded player. He probably listens to emo music.

  164. Steve Dave June 27th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

He hasn’t been sitting around and not throwing.

    Geez.

They just don’t want him throwing to professional hitters.

It is a long term project with him getting his head on straight. You saw what happened when they tried this the old fashioned way at first. He dominated Trip A and than got blown out 5 days later in Tampa.

They thought it would be better if he threw in Tampa and not to hitters to get his head fixed.

Believe what you want but it’s the truth.

Hey fellas. Missed being here. Too many problems at work. Just thought i would give my 2 cents. Igawa should only be brought up if he plans on showing up in Mets gear for the game. Traded and only that reason. I hope we can get a split today. The only good news is the last time Ponson debut with us, i believe he pitched a gem. Lets hope history repeats itself and Horn or Kennedy are ready to go soon. Oh and one more thing. Its about damn time that crap or a pitcher Ohlendorf is sent packing. Funny how all of the Cashman defenders are not participating tonight. If anyone doesnt believe that for the most part the Yankees’ farm system is over rated they should be sentenced to watch a 2 hour video loop of Kei Igawa, Ian Kennedy,Ross Ohlendorf, Billy Traber, Edwar Ramirez, Chris Stewart,Scott Patterson,Dan Giese and Jonathan Albaladejo 2008 lowlights.

  217. DFox June 27th, 2008 at 7:58 pm

I can tell you this. They are working the phones like crazy in the front office.

For whom? No clue. But I would expect it to be for a lefty in the pen and a stud SP.

They have the system to almost where they want it and they will use it.

They also figure, and correctly I think, that there is dominant team and they can win this whole thing.

  221. BG June 27th, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Kennedy and MAYBE Ohlendorf are the only guys on that list that would have been considered prospects from our farm system. Albadejo is a useful bullpen arm who would be helping the team if he wasn’t injured.

There are some good players in the system. They just aren’t quite ready yet.

    Cashman isn’t going anywhere.

It’s already common knowledge for those who bother to pay attention that Hank and Hal have already approached Cashman about a contract extension.

The only way Cashman leaves is if he leaves on his own. Hank and Hal want him back.

Those who don’t like it, well, that’s a darn shame.

  229. Drive 4-5 June 27th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

Seeing Kei Igawa back on this roster has me much more upset than this afternoon’s embarassing pitching performance. You can write off the first game and move on. Kei Igawa translates to a loss for every game he appears in. Brian Cashman should truly be ashamed tonight.

  230. Buddins June 27th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

“So, uh, anyone here for a Friday night ‘Sidney Ponson drinking game’? Every walk or hit Sir Sidney gives up = a shot.”

Sir, that is a FINE idea we’ve been debating:

“Mr Mulligan – count me in… lets set up some rules

    walks = 1 second
hits = 1 second per total base
BAC over .08 = finish your drink
Front office members assaulted = oh wait Chacon’s not here yet”

    “Good start…
Lets begin by slamming our adult beverage of choice if Sir Sidney is sober enough to:
    a)find Shea Stadium,
b)warm up without tossing his cookies and
c)actually face a Met batter without passing out…

Before we even start the heavy drinking due to his performance.”

First beer / drink / kegerator done before Sir Sidney throws a pitch is my idea…

  236. Jeff June 27th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Ponson will pitch 7 shutout innings and hit a grand slam. He’ll then pull a Chacon, beat up Cashman and get DFA’d.

  237. Mark in CT June 27th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

For all those who think there is no one out there for the GM job, check Heyman’s column’s on SI. Makes a solid list of the guys ready to take over.

We’re talking about the Yankees here. Whoever gets the job, he/she will be someone you’ve heard of. We’re not the Royals who can give some hotshot assistant from another team a chance. If it’s kept in house, you’re talking Afterman or Oppenheimer, and you can’t expect anything different/better from either.

  241. S.o.S.27 June 27th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

    Drive 4-5,
The only way that Igawa pitches good is if Ponson rolls down the mound drunk and unconsious. He is the best F-it we have no one left pitcher after an injury we have.

  242. Dee June 27th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

    Drive 4-5,

I have to keep reminding myself that Igawa did have that ONE good game against Boston…

And in terms of alcohol content, don’t forget Hank. I bet he’ll be reaching for the bottle if this keeps up.

  243. Joe from Long Island June 27th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

    Rebecca –

I don’t think it’s as easy as you being at the games. I think it has more to do with bad pitching.

I know Geise, Edwar, Ollie, and LaTroy all pitched poorly, but I refuse to call guys who I’m sure are trying their best a variety of insulting names.

I’m not ready to give up on Ollie. Early in the year he was pitching well. Then came a run of multi-innings games, and he was a new, and not so good, pitcher. Whatever his issues are, he has not been able to work them out in NY and I really hope he can do so in SWB. He seems like a good guy, and I will root for his return to our good graces.

LaTroy and Edwar, I don’t know about. I’m not too optimistic on their recoveries, and trade bait may be their best way to help the Yankees.

In any event, everyone connected with this abomination of scheduling, from the reporters to the players, should be thanked by us for providing us with our games, and our rooting interests. This includes our own Pete.

Let’s go Sir Sidney, and let’s go Yankees.

  244. Drive 4-5 June 27th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

    BG,

Agree with you to a point. But if Kei Igawa wasnt part of Cashman’s plan then why did he invest $46mil on him?? Also, Edwar Ramirez certainly was /is consisdered to be one of the Yanks prospects. Cashman had to take a flyer on Traber because he neglected to include a lefty in the bullpen.

  245. Guiseppe Franco June 27th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

I can tell you this. They are working the phones like crazy in the front office.

For whom? No clue. But I would expect it to be for a lefty in the pen and a stud SP.

Obviously, you are lying because all signs indicate that they are not pulling the trigger on a so-called stud pitcher.

The cost in players and cash is going to be too high and it’s not going to happen.

This front office has a long plan and they are not going to divert from it by making a stupid trade and giving up a bunch of kids they are relying on for the future.

Everything this organization has done the last year has had 2009 and beyond in mind. It’s not all about 2008.

A middle-tier arm is more like it, but a stud?

    Don’t bet on it.

  246. pat June 27th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

And mel gets rim shot for that last joke. LOL

Mike on WFAN said that he discussed the Chacon/Wade thing with Cashman this afternoon and Brian said if someone threw him to the ground he would at least get a few swings in. Little Brian may be feistier than some of you think.

  248. Dee June 27th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Rebecca, the Yanks lost 4 games in a roll that I went to too earlier this season so I skipped a game. But they still lost so I thought well its not my fault.

  254. BG June 27th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

    Drive 4-5,

Igawa wasn’t a prospect. He’s a bust for sure and blame whoever you want for that — Cashman, the scouts, others in the organization. I’m sure there’s enough blame to go around. But he was a major league free agent signing not a minor league prospect. The fact that he stinks is not a reflection on our minor league system.

Edwar is a player we took a flyer on who may or may not help us, much like Patterson or Aceves. He’s not a guy we drafted and developed. We signed him off the scrap heap and He cost us next to nothing to sign. I don’t get why everyone likes to hate on Edwar. He’s not the problem. The problem is that we don’t have 4 guys better than Edwar at the major league level.

For years, the yankees did both a poor job of player development and they traded away what talent they did develop. The reason we’re relying on marginal guys now is not that our farm system sucks now, but that it sucked 3-4 years ago. They’ve turned the corner on that. There’s plenty of talent in our farm system now. Its just not major league ready yet. Joba flew through the system. That’s rare though. Most guys need a few years. I think we’ll be in great shape in two or three years in terms of young talent. We’ve got to bridge that two to three year gap.

  255. Terry in NH June 27th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

I still say CC Sabathia, Joba and Wang would make one hellavu front 3..

  258. Drive 4-5 June 27th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

    BG,

In 2 or 3 years Jeter will be 37 and A Rod 38, Posada 39 and Mo 40. The time to win with this team is now.
I fully understand player development. But there needs to be some balance. also, the Yankees have drafted their best prospects as pitchers and neglected their position needs.

  259. rconn23 June 27th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

“In 2 or 3 years Jeter will be 37 and A Rod 38, Posada 39 and Mo 40. The time to win with this team is now.
I fully understand player development. But there needs to be some balance. also, the Yankees have drafted their best prospects as pitchers and neglected their position needs.”

That’s a great point, and I agree. It’s great to have a wealth of young pitching in the farm system and you’ve got to continue to stockpile it.

But the farm system is dearth of position players. The only possibilities are in Low A ball (Montero, Snyder, Angelini).

Matsui’s knees just aren’t going to last much longer, he’s 34 but has the knees of a 44-year old. Giambi and Damon are injury risks that you just can’t resign when their contracts are up.

A-Rod is the only player we can really count on to play at a high level over the next 3 years. That’s why I still say it makes sense to make a run at Tex. He’s 28, a excellent run producer and defender. That position would be set for the next 6 years.
He’s a first baseman, not some slug you stick there because he can’t play anywhere else. You hope Cano picks it back up, Austin Jackson progresses enough to be ready for CF in 2010, and go from there.
