Welcome to the rotation, Sidney

Joe Girardi said he wanted to sleep on it. But we suspect Sidney Ponson will start against the Red Sox on Wednesday, not Dan Giese.

“That was a very big start for us,” said Girardi, who praised Sir Sidney’s ability to throw strikes low in the zone.

Said Ponson: “I’ve got to make the most of it. It is a fresh start.”

Darrell Rasner, Giese, now Ponson. Brian Cashman is patching up holes like one of those guys in the chop shops across the street from Shea Stadium. But until the trade market yields something, that is what he has to do.

It’s not as simple as calling the 29 other GMs until somebody cracks. You think the Yankees are alone in this dilemma?

That’s it from Queens. Time to head home. We had 2,000+ comments today, thanks so much. Yanks-Mets at 4 p.m. tomorrow. Andy Pettitte against Johan “We could have him for Kennedy and Hughes, damn you Brian Cashman” Santana.

Nice job Peter. Now get some well earned rest.

  2. Al from BK June 28th, 2008 at 12:45 am

The Yanks are playing the Sox Wed? The ones from Chicago right. I am going to Sundays game hope Moose doesn’t stink up the joint against the Sux.

  3. Andrew (Scott Proctor's Arm) June 28th, 2008 at 12:46 am

    They’re playing Texas on Wednesday.

  4. Global Warming June 28th, 2008 at 12:46 am

Damn you Brian Cashman we could of had Santana right now!

  5. lil' m June 28th, 2008 at 12:46 am

Pete: Ya done good – get some well-deserved rest. Sweet dreams, all.

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 28th, 2008 at 12:46 am

At least it’s Pettitte v. Santana.

Could you imagine if it was Hughes, the pressure Hughes would be under?

  7. stuart June 28th, 2008 at 12:47 am

again with this rotation they need to fix the pen.. we have igawa, edwar, and latroy and kyle in the pen… We have to have better internal solutions.

the biggest joke this yr. is not DFA’ing Hawkins….To think they survived the ensberg waive god only knows they probably can survive getting rid of Hawkins…His ERA is over 6, in 40 or so innings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. stuart June 28th, 2008 at 12:49 am

hughes better grow up and get use to have some pressure and get healthy and stay healthy..

his lack of production and injury are really killing this team……..

with the Ponson win tonight they have like 4 total wins from the 4th and 5th starters………

  9. Dee June 28th, 2008 at 12:49 am

“Johan “We could have him for “Kennedy and Hughes, damn you Brian Cashman” Santana”

Or Johan “who hasn’t won in 4 games and gave up a grand slam to an AL pitcher” Santana :-)

  10. Dee June 28th, 2008 at 12:51 am

    Good night all.

Pete, great great coverage today even after you must have slept no more than 4 hours. Thanks!

  11. stuart June 28th, 2008 at 12:52 am

it also was more then hughes and kennedy and the biggest reason which these yo yo’s cannot comprehend from there little minds.. he got paid $135 mill over 7 yrs and is 29 yrs old…..

  12. don`t knock Johan June 28th, 2008 at 12:53 am

I`ll still take Johan. Remember he is still learning the NL, he is on a dysfunctional team, if he was here with the Yanks hemight be 9-4 right now. We`d be in first place too

  13. accountant? June 28th, 2008 at 12:57 am

    Stu,

are you an accountant for the Yankees? part owner? why do you care, or why do you think the Yankees care about how much they spend on a player? Where has that ever stopped them before? Clemens? Igawa?
I wouldnt knock Johan- hes in a new league, and he is on a dysfunctional team, if he was with the Yankees he`d be 9-4 ish? and we would be in first place

  14. odds are June 28th, 2008 at 12:59 am

odds are, and I`d be willing to bet, that after Johans career is over he will accumulate more wins than BOTH kennedy and hughes when they are done

  15. Question for anyone June 28th, 2008 at 1:03 am

Lets say the Yankees stay patient with Hughes and or Kennedy. They live through 3 years of strugles before they get really good. Now they get really good, andget a big contract. isnt it the same thing?
Take Johan win now. wait on these younger guys and MAYBE win later? the Money may be the same if the younger guys pan out. If Santana who is 29 pitches well till he is 35 well thats 6 good years.

  16. S.A.- No pain..no gain! I still believe in this team June 28th, 2008 at 1:03 am

    Get some sleep Pete
    Welcome Sidney Ponson?

  17. zellyanks91 June 28th, 2008 at 1:05 am

Its funny how yankee fans already have given up on upcoming future prospects. Johan Santana has been mediocre this year. His stats have declined year after year and his best years are behind him. Mike Mussina has been in the 8th inning twice this year..on the other hand..Santana hasn’t made it past the 7th inning yet. People need to learn to have some patience with these rookies. You can’t expect them to step on the largest stage in the world and put up insane numbers. These guys are young and people need to learn to give them a chance. They will go through rough patches..but it pays off in the end.

Do you guys honestly think that Santana was worth it for the Mets? They don’t seem to be running away with the division with him…

    Kevin

  18. Ummm...... June 28th, 2008 at 1:06 am

Let’s not get too carried away here.

Ponson started in the best position possible. He got to face an NL team in their ballpark which limits offense to 8 and the second end of a doubleheader – so a tired offense after pounding out 15 runs just a few hours before.

Plus, he barely got out of jams.

Let’s not get Tyler Clippard on Ponson.

  19. Nick in SF June 28th, 2008 at 1:09 am

Santana’s career totals are irrelevent (except that his inflated salary is based on his past success). The only totals that matter if you want to judge the non-trade for Santana are his totals from 2008 going forward through the life of the deal with his diminished stuff.

There’s no way to honestly assess the non-trade right now and there’s no way to say what Santana’s record would be right now wearing pinstripes.

  20. Yankee prospects? June 28th, 2008 at 1:10 am

The futures game that coming up all star weekend. The Yankees have a grand total of 1 player playing in that game. Yeah, looks like our farm system is loaded!

  21. futures game?? June 28th, 2008 at 1:12 am

is that futures game for minor leaguers?

  22. mel June 28th, 2008 at 1:18 am

Great second game. Lighting in a bottle indeed. Hope Andy pitches like he has been. Tired of treading water.

  23. DYNASTY IS DESTINY! June 28th, 2008 at 1:19 am

Okay, so we seem to be finding starters to fill in-Sydney was good enough tonight to earn himself a couple more starts perhaps…

But what about this bullpen? What do you think the plan is? Is there a plan?

Please tell me there’s a plan!

  24. zellyanks91 June 28th, 2008 at 1:21 am

Yankee Prospects?- Jesus Montero might very well be the guy who takes Jorge’s job after he retires. He is a terrific player. Tons of players who are good get snubbed by the futures game. The Yanks have tons of upcoming prospects who can very well be future stars on the team.

Montero, Brackman, Cox, Melancon, Jackson, Robertson, Whelan, McCutchen, Horne, Betances, Kontos,Heredia, Romine, McAllister, Pope, Vizcaino, Smith, Sanchez, Tabata, Jones, Aceves, Coke, Claggett, Cervelli, Wright

and hopefully Gerrit Cole signs with the Yanks…

    Kevin

  25. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) June 28th, 2008 at 1:22 am

    I love posting when I hear Johan’s name :)

  26. James June 28th, 2008 at 1:24 am

It’s always funny when people talk about the yankees needing cashman and what an asset he is… this bullpen, this rotation (+igawa, wirght, hawkins, pavano, farnsworth++++) all his. You’d be blind to think any reader of this blog couldnt have done just as well. The sky isnt falling, just the cashman’s blind supporters… So he kept young talent in lew of paying for santana, well enough, to ask for kudos and a blind pass for the bed he’s made? yawn, joe schmoe off the street could have been cashman the last 6 years. open your eyes Pete, you read like a trained pup in regards to cash

  27. Ummm...... June 28th, 2008 at 1:25 am

RE: YANKEES PROSPECTS SUCK BECAUSE WE HAVE ONLY ONE GUY IN THE FUTURES GAME

That’s not the most intelligent post I’ve ever heard.

Every club has to be represented in the game, which leaves only 20 more roster spots. However, if your prospect is at a position that was already filled by one of the mandatory team spots then you’re out of luck.

Also this year players weren’t picked solely on their prospect status but also their eligibility/availability to play for Team USA. They’re preparing for the Olympics which is also why the game this year will be 9 innings and not 7 innings.

  28. mel June 28th, 2008 at 1:26 am

    Brandon,

Hope you get to update your handle. :)

  29. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) June 28th, 2008 at 1:27 am

The futures game that coming up all star weekend. The Yankees have a grand total of 1 player playing in that game. Yeah, looks like our farm system is loaded!

Do you even know how they are picked, if that’s that’s the reason explain how Fernando Martinez made the world roster

  30. Dr. J June 28th, 2008 at 1:34 am

I want to see Pettitte hit a solo shot off Santana

  31. YankeesLuv June 28th, 2008 at 1:34 am

You did a great job today Pete, get some rest.
Regarding Ponson pitching wednsday, aren’t the Yanks playing the Texas Rangers?

  32. Ollie June 28th, 2008 at 1:40 am

I think the Yankees system is a tad overrated myself but who cares how many players play in the Futures Games?

    It’s not a pre-req for stardom.

  33. Marrs June 28th, 2008 at 1:42 am

    “I love posting when I hear Johan’s name :)

Just think how much you would have had all year if he was in pinstripes like he should have been.

  34. Anyone but Farnsworth June 28th, 2008 at 1:45 am

Marrs Santana in a Yankee uniform was not the right move.

  35. BBP June 28th, 2008 at 1:46 am

    Welcome back Sidney!!

  36. stark June 28th, 2008 at 1:46 am

I take the proven all star in his prime over the two kids who may, I stress may, be even 70% of that guy.

Throw in the fact that he’s a gamer, a great athlete and he’s left handed and you got me sold.

I think it was a terrible decision not to get Santana. Obviously, we are paying the price now. And we’ll pay it in November when they overpay for a fat, out of shape Sabathia and someone like Burnett.

I’d have much rather gone for the sure thing. I’d rather win rings than win Baseball America’s top farm system ranking.

  37. Marrs June 28th, 2008 at 1:47 am

Anyone but Farnsworth June 28th, 2008 at 1:45 am

Marrs Santana in a Yankee uniform was not the right move.

Igawa, Giese, Kennedy, Ponson, Chase Wright, Pavano, Hawkins, etc are all better options than Johan Santana???

    Spare me.

  38. mike June 28th, 2008 at 1:48 am

there is absolutely no reason why melancon hasn’t been brought to AAA. Also the young players like Robertson should be brought up. Anyone is better than Edwar, ohlendorf, and Hawkins. Cashman needs to make a move soon. Its about time we bring up these young guys and see what there made out of. Also hopefully by august we willl have humberto sanchez in the bullpen. Things must change and cashman needs to know that!

  39. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) June 28th, 2008 at 1:49 am

Are you guys serious if Johan would have been pitching in the AL w/ this offense the way they can’t hit w/ RISP and giving up HR after HR or big hit after big hit, I’d be ripping this guy everyday and you know you would be too.

  40. GreenBeret7 June 28th, 2008 at 1:49 am

How has that fat, out of shape Sabathia been lately, Stark?

  41. mel June 28th, 2008 at 1:49 am

Oh Lord. Please let us win tomorrow. It’s starting already.

WE CAN’T UNDO THE SANTANA TRADE!!!

  42. stark June 28th, 2008 at 1:50 am

All the guys who want Sabathia right now, where were you in November?

You honestly think he’s a better bet to succeed over 7 years than Santana?

The Yankee Management basically threw this season away as a learning year. Hate to say it but everyone knows its true. Soon as they passed on Santana and put three rookies into a rotation. They gave up on this year.

Where is the in season help? We have a great farm system I heard. Why not put it to use? When this team is clicking no one can beat them.

  43. Roofer June 28th, 2008 at 1:52 am

You really think they are going to trade for Sabathia?

They wouldn’t do it for an athlete like Santana. They won’t give Sabathia a 7 yr deal especially when every report you hear is that he won’t handle NY and is a small town guy.

    They waited years for flexibility.

They won’t ruin it right away.

  44. mel June 28th, 2008 at 1:53 am

Santana’s a great pitcher, but please remember to mentally add .75 to his ERA to see how effective he would be in the AL.

  45. munchabuncha June 28th, 2008 at 1:53 am

Then why don’t you go buy the team, stark, and then YOU can make all the decisions.

I wonder how long till you run it into the ground.

  46. Marrs June 28th, 2008 at 1:53 am

“Oh Lord. Please let us win tomorrow. It’s starting already.

WE CAN’T UNDO THE SANTANA TRADE!!!”

He’d have 7 more wins for us than Hughes and Kennedy have.

Probably tack on a few more since Mo would be closing for him.

  47. Marrs June 28th, 2008 at 1:55 am

“Santana’s a great pitcher, but please remember to mentally add .75 to his ERA to see how effective he would be in the AL.”

He seemed to be doing pretty well in the AL the past few years. Just a little bit good.

But hey, have fun with this triple A cast off’s auditioning for the 4 and 5 spots.

  48. zellyanks91 June 28th, 2008 at 1:56 am

Lets go over Johan Santana this year as compared to the year before. Now you need to understand that Johan has only made 16 starts so far this year & he made 33 starts all of last year.

Stark, what team is trading anything, right now? Do you have an inside pipeline to the trade talks, or, do you get that from MLBTradeRumors, where they tell you the Yankees aren’t getting anyone?

  50. stark June 28th, 2008 at 1:57 am

“Then why don’t you go buy the team, stark, and then YOU can make all the decisions. I wonder how long till you run it into the ground.”

Always a great place here for good baseball discussion. People can’t disagree with you. They have to try to degrade you and put you down.

I could care less with some anonymous person says if you are going to try to “put me down”. I can get over it quick. LOL.

I’d rather you argue over baseball instead of resorting to 3rd grade put downs but who should expect more here?

  51. Anyone but Farnsworth June 28th, 2008 at 1:57 am

Correct Santana is ten times better then all of them. But our formula for the past 6 years was to spend big on free agents. And over the past 6 years we have made the playoffs but honestly who gives a shit we didnt win the thing we all want. After the Yankees awful defeat last year to the Indians the Yankees decided to move the franchise in the right decision, which was building the farm system. With a terrific farm system enables us to have options. These options include trading for a pitcher at the trade deadline, bringing up kids that have tremendous talent like Joba and finally use money more efficiently. Ok yes Santana would of given us the necessary pitcher we need now, and maybe hughes and kennedy dont pan out, however our long future is tremendously bright and our near future is still attainable. Finnaly who have we lost to in the postseason the last couple of years, not proven pitchers but young guns like beckett when he was in florida, or cormona last year or verlander in detriot. The new wave of baseball is young and hard throwing pitchers and we have them and they are developing

    Marrs,

Once again. We can’t undo it. Realists don’t live with shoulda, woulda, coulda.

People love to come here and say, “I told you so”. They say it a thousand times to people they don’t even know because, I don’t even know why.

No one is denying that Johan is terrific or that it’d be great to have him. But really, that ship has sailed.

  54. zellyanks91 June 28th, 2008 at 2:01 am

If Santana gets rocked tomorrow by the Yanks…oh boy…

The guys who say they should have done the trade will be hiding. There would be nothing sweeter than beating up Johan. He isn’t the guy Yankee fans think he is..mark my word.

    Kevin

  55. stark June 28th, 2008 at 2:02 am

Santana has an ERA of under 3 and 7 wins for an under 500 team that has blown more than a few games for him and he’s having a terrible season apparently.

You guys read way too much Buster Olney.

He started the loss of stuff way back in sept of last yr after the big strikeout game.

Some anonymous scout tips and now its basically Bible. Ok, I guess that seems cool.

Just that this team with Santana would be in 1st place right now.

And with all that talent on the way up they wouldn’t miss the 3 prospects at all.

And they wouldn’t have to overpay and cost themselves draft picks signing Sheets or Sabathia or Burnett or whoever else.

    Nite all.

  56. munchabuncha June 28th, 2008 at 2:02 am

Stark, you aren’t arguing, you are making emperical statements that are meaningless and infantile.

  57. Marrs June 28th, 2008 at 2:03 am

mel, you obviously don’t follow baseball. it has been built for a century on woulda, coulda, shoulda’s.

That is the tradition of this game and why we are still talking about it at 2am.

Second guessing and saying what you would do is part of the game. Or do you take everything Cashman does at face value and agree with it all???

  58. munchabuncha June 28th, 2008 at 2:03 am

Tell ya what stark, prove it. Prove that if the Yankees had Santana they would be in first.

    We’ll wait.

  59. Wendy M June 28th, 2008 at 2:04 am

And we lose ground to TB and BOS again. Sigh.

  60. GreenBeret7 June 28th, 2008 at 2:04 am

Maybe people “argue and put you down” Stark, because you yammer on the same subject daily and tell people that they are wrong and only you are right. Most people aren’t particularly interested in hearing it from you constantly. It’s just not worth the effort it takes.

  61. stark June 28th, 2008 at 2:05 am

“Stark, you aren’t arguing, you are making emperical statements that are meaningless and infantile.”

My point exactly about the childish put downs and general lameness.

To all the good people who just want to talk and argue baseball. Good night. Andy will get ‘em tomorrow.

  62. stark June 28th, 2008 at 2:07 am

“Tell ya what stark, prove it. Prove that if the Yankees had Santana they would be in first.

    We’ll wait.”

    Santana 7 wins.

    Hughes/Kennedy 0.

I figure give Santana a few more cos Mo wouldn’t blow games like the Mets have. Also would have to chalk up a few more because the Yanks offense is better than the Mets in runs.

    But you get the picture.

I don’t see how one can argue how the Yanks wouldn’t be better right now with Santana. But you get all walks of life in here.

    Really. Nite ya’ll.

  63. Latte June 28th, 2008 at 2:08 am

I’d give my left nut for an ace especially for the two overrated kids and the CF who won’t be starting come Aug.

    Bret Gardner come on down.

  64. munchabuncha June 28th, 2008 at 2:09 am

Stark you say nothing. You are the one sounding like a childish whining brat whose Mommy didn’t buy him the toy he wanted.

    What a buffoon.

  65. Marrs June 28th, 2008 at 2:09 am

    “Bret Gardner come on down.”

I really want to see him play. Getting excited by all the box scores I see from him.

  66. Marrs June 28th, 2008 at 2:10 am

    munch,

Please enlighten us all on your views on the matter. Or you just going to take pot shots at stark?

    Thought so. Troll on.

  67. zellyanks91 June 28th, 2008 at 2:11 am

If you could offer me Santana or Sabathia right now. I would take Sabathia over him any time.

He is a lefty…as is Santana
His stats are getting better every year..not worse
    He is a bit younger..
    He can pitch complete games..

    Kevin

  68. Roofer June 28th, 2008 at 2:11 am

These kids better be real good because these new Yankees are not going to spend money on long term deals for pitchers.

They won’t even give Wang a contract.

  69. Dee June 28th, 2008 at 2:12 am

Hey guys, just want to tell everyone there are still tickets for tomorrow’s game on the Mets site, and good seats too. I’ve been trying the past 2 weeks there were only seats beyond the foul poles but I just found 2 good seats on the field level, there seemed to be a couple sections opening up. Just keep trying if you’re interested.

  70. mel June 28th, 2008 at 2:12 am

    Marrs,

I do watch baseball, but I’m not a fatalist. I know that it’s a game in which the batter’s going to fail 7 times out of ten (or 9 out of 10 with RISP for the Yankees). So I don’t fret over every pitch, every at bat. I choose, instead to look at the big picture.

And, no, I don’t believe every word (well, because it’s a GM’s job to float misinformation) and I don’t accept every move. But I can’t do the job any better, so I keep my mouth shut.

Instead, I enjoy my team, warts and all.

And, for the record, I wasn’t referring to you. There are other people who have repeated ad nauseaum the same arguments. Only a retard would want the zero wins that Phil & IPK have given us to date. But it is what it is. And Santana to the Yankees isn’t.

  71. Marrs June 28th, 2008 at 2:13 am

I’m sure Cashman wanted Sabathia strictly for money. Not for Hughes and assorted prospects.

He thought he could survive the year without trading.

And I bet he thought that the Indians wouldn’t be in last place.

  72. Marrs June 28th, 2008 at 2:14 am

    mel,

Join the fantasy world of being a fan. Criticize a GM’s bad moves. praise his good ones. But take a stand. You will like it better than just saying “it is what it is”.

  73. Roofer June 28th, 2008 at 2:15 am

What in Cashman’s resume since he got full control leads any of you to believe he will trade Grade A prospects for a rental he can have for free in 5 months?

  74. Roofer June 28th, 2008 at 2:15 am

Anyone expect Boston to lose to Houston???

There are 100 guys working in the industry who would eat their first born for a chance to take the reins of the mighty Yankees. And 90% of the people here would take 2 children.

  76. Rockafella June 28th, 2008 at 2:19 am

You better like hearing the Santana thing being argued and discussed and fought over. Because it is never, ever going away. It will be talked about and analyzed 30 years from now.

  77. The Jack Ruby June 28th, 2008 at 2:21 am

I could care less what they pay any of these pitchers. They should have traded for Santana and they should sign Sabathia. Great pitching is what wins titles. They may as well use the money wisely and spend on great pitchers. Instead of Pavano and Igawa.

  78. mel June 28th, 2008 at 2:21 am

    Marrs,

I’ve stated my position many times. Ask the regulars here. I didn’t want to trade for Santana. I like the build from within plan. I’m willing to ride the rough patches for the long term payoff. I’m all for getting C.C. as a free agent. You’ll also never find that I dissed Santana and said he was declining or whatever.

And even if I advocated for Santana I wouldn’t try to rub it in people’s faces if I was right.

I’ve always taken a stand. And right or wrong, I stick to it.

    NO THANK YOU!

Tonights game was great and nobody expected it. Anyone who says they did is a liar. Lets not get carried away though. It’s not like he put on the uniform and suddenly remembered how to pitch. It’s still the same old Sidney Ponson. He just got lucky tonight facing a bad team that we should be beating everytime we play.

If we get Sabthia for anyone other than Chamberlain(obviously not going anywhere) Hughes Betances Heredia A.Jackson Tabata Gardner Damon Matsui Melancon Cox De La Rosa McCutchen Montero

Big list, but we COULD get him without that. I say Abreu might go (expiring contract) but I dont want him to. I say we have to at least try for him

But to answer the question above. I see Boston sweeping Houston. The Boston-Tampa series is HUGGEEE for us. We need to sweep Texas, there is no if ands or buts, we HAVE to sweep them

    Dave Robertson called up
    by Ed Price
    Saturday June 28, 2008, 12:53 PM
Robertson is a right-handed reliever who had been pitching well in Triple A.

    No corresponding move yet.

    Today’s lineup:
Damon lf, Jeter ss, Abreu rf, Rodriguez 3b, Giambi 1b, Posada c, Cano 2b, Cabrera cf, Pettitte p.

  85. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) June 28th, 2008 at 1:42 pm

About time D-Rob was called up. I wish him luck.

You know w/ Matsui on the DL I want to refresh the blog talk about him, For some time I’ve said when he is at his peak we should look to deal him, it hurts but now too many warning signs are there left knee, right knee I mean give me a break.

  89. RhapsodyInBlue June 28th, 2008 at 1:48 pm

Appears Igawa could be the long man and a lefty in the pen, who knows he could be his niche.

    And Robertson certainly will help.

  90. stuart June 28th, 2008 at 1:49 pm

the reason it matter how much the yanks would have paid for is simple, the do not have unlimited funds SO even the Yankees have a budget.

If they blow big bucks on old vets they cannot overpay for foreign players(future stars) and over pay per slot for draft picks…

is Santana still good? Yes very good but get back to me in 3 yrs. when he isn’t and his contract is horrible..

Clowns sooner or later you need to pay the piper for your sins(bas signings)..

The Yanks do not have a unlimited budget and if you cannot figure that out by there lack of moves the last 2 yrs. you are not to bright. Again they will lose about $80 mill in contracts this offseason an a few of them definitely will not be resigned so that is when they can sign a Sabathia or others… Bye bye ; giambi, moose, kyle, latroy, carl, etc…….

That is saved money, the yanks have not had budget flexibility in many many years, this offseason they will have it for once.

I hope the RObertson rumor is correct, DFA hawkins please….

Hahaha. I’m imagining Johan, standing alone on the deck of a huge ship called S.S. Mets waving, and sailing away from the dock, and all these Yankee fans.. tiny and insignificant compared to this huge ship .. yelling frantically “come back, come back! they didn’t really mean it!” from the dock.

Okay. I have too much time on my hands, apparently. :)

You know it’s a rough season when you want to see Sidney Ponson get shelled and are actually upset that he didn’t.

Then the Yankees win and you question if it was a good thing, because now Ponson is still on the active roster.

But Robertson is up. And that can make it all go away.

  94. RhapsodyInBlue June 28th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Could be that they decide to bring up Gardner up to replace Matsui and send Christian back down.

The Melky hate is hilarious. Melky is the Yanks starting CF. Except it and deal with it. With A-Rod, Giambi, Posada, Jeter, Abreu, Damon, Matsui, Cano we should score enough runs to overcome Melky’s offensive shortcomings right now.

He’s 23. He tore up AAA as well, and that was when he was 21. I love what Gardner may bring to the table, but Melky had a month at AAA in 2006 that Gardner can’t match. I just wish Melky would’ve progressed from his 06 season when he was 21 and played well. I’m all for bringing up Gardner if he can come up and play everyday and that’s only going to happen if another OF gets DL’d.

So guys, Andy with a grand slam today?

  124. Bart June 28th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Sir you and the other Hughes-Kennedy defenders need to stop this nonsense about Hughes and Kennedy for Sanatana – by the time the deal was done much less a package would have worked

Melky would have been traded and perhaps Keneddy and two or more propspects. Kennedy wil not ever be a front line pitcher — without dominating stike out pitches or the odd Wang aberration nothing he did in college and the minors ever argued better than a #4 — I still feel it was a oor evaluation or poor understanding of his evaluation to keep him

It was argued on this blog and on others that given all the risks to this season and next that trading Melky and IPK was a risk mitigation strategy — and that with Gardner and Jacksson showing well in the minors that Melky was in fact expendable.

Uncertainty to Wang’s ability to work on carpet and in big game situations against patient lineups, Pettit’s arm health, the Yankees let him go once in part with that worry in mind and the uncertain prospects of the Three Amigo’s at least demanded that Stein duo and Cashman stay in the game.

Now the chickens roost – not just this year but next – if the Ynakees panic now they will abandon the “we develop our own and deal for much less capacity than Santana”

If we fans and the Yankee front office are willing to risk this year and next out of the playoffs with a September set of games that only matter as those “last games to be played in the stadium”, then so be it — we can stick it out

It may be that to reduce the oayrooll they have taken a callous – so waht approach to the playoofs believeing the ,ast year at the Old and firts year at the NEW will carry attendance – they are probably right there

So please stop the Huges + Kennedy – the front office simply blew this one.

–Another note – as a fan I was hopefull that Griaradi might be an improvement as an on filed tactical manager and a wiser developer of a bullpen and the apporach to using it — we ar nenarly to the all star break and I do not see any posiitve signs

  125. Bad Scooter June 28th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Rhap – When Gardner comes up I want to see him play everday. Damon, Matsui and Giambi (early in the season) were rotating in and out to give them a break for age/injury concerns. Brett needs to play everyday up here to see what he can do. I’d rather him play everyday in AAA than once a week up with the Yanks.

  126. farnsworthy June 28th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Andy will get in the face today. Santana won’t put up with pitchers hitting home runs anymore.

  132. RhapsodyInBlue June 28th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

    bad scooter

Melky hate? Melky is one of my favorites, with Matsui going onto the DL asking for Gardner to replace him in the lineup doesn’t effect Melky.

But consider gardner could also play center to give Melky a rest periodically.

  133. Bob(the original) June 28th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

  137. Bad Scooter June 28th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Not you Rhap. Somebody above mentioned Melky being a .240 and getting AB’s, why can’t Gardner get AB’s. Melky isn’t hitting .240 and never has, but whatever.

  138. munchabuncha June 28th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

I’m to the point where I would love to see Gardner brought up just to shut up those who are clamoring for him. This despite the fact that Melky had been batting in the mid .300′s in AAA and Gardner below .300. Add in scouting reports that say he is not ready.

The transition from the minors to the majors is huge, but just ignore that. He will rake in the majors – right?

Gardner projects to be a back up outfielder, but he can run. How much running is he going to do sitting on the bench or striking out? Doesn’t matter.

So please, Cashman, bring up Gardner and sit Melky. This way the cries for Gardner will end and it will change to cries for Melky.

  139. farnsworthy June 28th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

  140. Fran June 28th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Chris Britton is on the 15 day DL. They could transfer him to the 60 day DL since he doesn’t pitch anyway to open up a spot on the 40 man roster.

As for the 25 man roster maybe Ramirez or Giese goes down.

  141. farnsworthy June 28th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

    you’re right, he’s not hitting .240 he’s hitting .253

  142. RhapsodyInBlue June 28th, 2008 at 2:21 pm

    muncha

I hope you aren’t referring to me or my posts? How could Gardner replacing Matsui effect Melky?

My point was, unless you missed it, Gardner could platoon to give Damon (like Matsui did) rest in left and for that matter play center when Melky sits.

  143. MIKE June 28th, 2008 at 2:22 pm

Robertson has been called up… wonder who gets sent down?

Just wondered if Matsui’s replacement would be better served as Gardner rather than Christian.

  148. TL June 28th, 2008 at 2:34 pm

The curve is def. the best pitch in Robertson’s arsenal. It’s very impressive wshen he can consistently locate it. It will make an impression on everyone when he’s on. There’s nothing straight about his fastball as is the case with Crazy Kyle and LaTroy.

Ummm. Sidney hadn’t pitched on a regular schedule in a while. It didn’t surprise me that he might be rusty. Plus don’t forget a lot of the jams he was in came because the umpire was in training and really screwed up the strike zone!

  151. stuart June 28th, 2008 at 2:37 pm

yeah what is the story on bruney and britton’s health..
why has britton never gotten a chance??

albedejo is gone for the year..

All the fans want is to try the young guys when guys like hawkins and others are so bad, hopefully Robertson will be an improvment but they got more where he is so that is good news.

Too bad if Santana pitch’s well today we will se 500 posts on why the yanks should have gotten him etc..

These Santana fans patience is nonexistent.. Santan pitched in the pen to 24 or so, I am sure these are the same fans whom would have been moaning nonstop that he was no good and should be traded etc…

  152. stuart June 28th, 2008 at 2:39 pm

Giese can pitch out of the pen we know Hawkins cannot, adios Latry.. Latroy is a good guy but just has had a terrible year so far…

try to move him he will only have about $1.5 left on his deal…

  153. rconn23 June 28th, 2008 at 2:39 pm

“This despite the fact that Melky had been batting in the mid .300’s in AAA and Gardner below .300. Add in scouting reports that say he is not ready.”

Way to take a small sample size of 31 games to skew Melky’s numbers in AAA. Look at Gardner’s numbers in the minors versus Cabrera’s, and Garnder’s are much more consistent.
And where are these “scouting reports” that say Garnder isn’t ready?

  154. michael June 28th, 2008 at 2:40 pm

  155. Victor the Predictor June 28th, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Santana will not pitch more than 5 innings.

  156. Bad Scooter June 28th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Well than say he’s batting .253 and not .240

  157. TL June 28th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

A walk is very likely with Robertson. Walks will def. be the biggest issue for Robertson and the nerves. I was on vaca in the Cape and saw the game where he threw three no-hit innings to win the title. One of the best performances I have seen.

  158. 27 this year June 28th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Hughes and Kennedy and Melky wasn’t enough for the Twins. If I remember correctly, we had them both on the table for a few days where the Twins looked for the other two teams to up the offer. We pulled out and then at the end the Twins came and asked for Wang, Kennedy, Melky, and another prospect. We would have traded our #1 Wang and our CF with two prospects for a dimishing #1 and we would be stuck with him for 7 years. Look at Zito, he got his contract as he was dimishing, started out Ok and then plummeted. Due his contract the Giants have to figure something out so they used him in the bullpen.

Another thing, you can’t get mad at Cashman for not pulling the trigger. What about all the times where we got screwed giving up some great young prospects?

BTW, interesting fact. Damaso Marte was a Yankee prospect who they traded to the Pirates for Enrique Wilson.

  159. S.A.- No pain..no gain! I still believe in this team June 28th, 2008 at 2:43 pm

  161. SoCalYankeeFan June 28th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Per Chad Jennings on his SWB Yankees blog, Brett Gardner is getting some time in LF. If Matsui is going to be DL’d a while and Johnny Damon foot aches continue to bother him, perhaps Gardner will be called up to play left.

    http://emedia.thetimes-tribune.....-left.aspx

    SoCalYankeeFan 8)

  162. munchabuncha June 28th, 2008 at 2:50 pm

Matsui is a DH. Is Gardner going to be replacing a DH? Damon is the regular Left Fielder, so Gardner isn’t going to be playing there that much. That means very few at bats because he isn’t a great batter with power. With Christian up, who is playing some outfield, where is the room for Gardner?

The Yankees might bring him up if Damon can’t field for a bit, but unless that happens, I really doubt that Gardner will get a call up yet. The Yankees have stated that he needs regular ABs. That isn’t going to happen being a part time player.

    Per Ed Price:

    Today’s lineup:
Damon lf, Jeter ss, Abreu rf, Rodriguez 3b, Giambi 1b, Posada c, Cano 2b, Cabrera cf, Pettitte p.

  164. Bob(the original) June 28th, 2008 at 2:51 pm

    anybody know the lineup
    ?

Damon lf, Jeter ss, Abreu rf, Rodriguez 3b, Giambi 1b, Posada c, Cano 2b, Cabrera cf, Pettitte p.

Ed Price’s blog had it. His blog is nowhere near as good as Pete’s, but he is pretty timely with updates.

Pete is a slacker! Where is out news on Robertson? ;)

  166. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 28th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

I’m watching Yankees’ classics and there is something so odd about watching Girardi bat.

I’m watching Yankees’ classics and there is something so odd about watching Girardi bat.

    What’s so odd about it?

  168. TL June 28th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

One other interesting nugget about Robertson in the Cape. He was the set-up guy for Josh Fields (The closer this year the U of Ga). Fields blew a game in the finals and Robertson stepped up and carried his team. In the final JEremy Bleich started for the other squad and Robertson Kd Brad Suttle to end the game.

  169. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 28th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

…They played the macarena at the stadium?

    Oh man.

    Pete is a lazy bum.

  171. Bad Scooter June 28th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

I don’t think Pete knows the blogs back online.

  172. RER - 98 June 28th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Don’t count on Ponson being around for long but do count on Cashman making other moves.
The progress of Aceves and Horne will be watched closely and they could figure prominently in the back end of the rotation.
Cashman will now be busy as the rumor mill amps up in July.
Matsui’s knees and Damon’s foot could hasten the callup of Brett Gardner or a July deal elsewhere. Randy Winn ? Ryan Freel ?
How long will this team continue to carry 3 catchers ?
It’s difficult to imagine both Hawkins and Farnsworth surviving the 7/31 deadline.
A better option for a defensive 1st baseman must be explored. Betemit is not the answer.

  173. Bugsy June 28th, 2008 at 3:03 pm

    Looks like Pete overslept.

  174. Joe from Long Island June 28th, 2008 at 3:05 pm

    Finally!

I never thought I would miss the internet.

Now, what’s this about Robertson? A call-up you say?

  175. michael June 28th, 2008 at 3:05 pm

girardi treats giambi so much differently than torre. torre treated him like an invalid that could only play 7 innings every other day. girardi puts him in every game. it’s great. when you challenge someone, they respond. when you treat them like they’re fragile, it seeps into their brain.

  176. Fran June 28th, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Sweeney just said that Robertson is up but no corresponding roster move yet.

Also said Matsui may need surgery on his knee

  177. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) June 28th, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Girardi did not rule out surgery in the case of Matsui :(

  178. Bugsy June 28th, 2008 at 3:08 pm

yeah but giambi is also in a contract year. so he’s pushing himself.

  179. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 28th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Maybe Pete was stuck in traffic?

  180. Bob(the original) June 28th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

    How’s the weather there today?

    Rain a apossibility?

  181. Bob(the original) June 28th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

When was the last time it was less than an hour until gametime and we’ve gotten nothing from Pete?

  182. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) June 28th, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Pete spoke w/ Tony Paige last night so my guess he woke up late and is driving to Shea right now

  183. Joe from Long Island June 28th, 2008 at 3:13 pm

Maybe Pete’s stuck in the LoHud internet ether.

I just read Chad Jennings’ blog, and it seems Ollie will be put into the Scranton rotation. He claims that, though the Yanks want him to be a reliever, they want him to get regular, scheduled work in order to fix what ails his pitches. It seems like a creative approach, and suggests that they want him fixed, and back into the NY bullpen this season. I hope it works.

  184. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 28th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Pete emailed me back at 12. So he isn’t sleeping. lol

  185. Joe from Long Island June 28th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Is it just me, or is this blog refreshing slower than usual? Maybe things are still not 100%.

  186. munchabuncha June 28th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

I don’t think it was so much that Torre babied Giambi as it was Giambi was hurt so much. Coming back from his injuries you weren’t going to put him out there every day. Plus the setup was a platoon of players for 1st base.

I do think that playing every day has helped Giambi though. I just don’t think it was the plan last year.

Hard to say what they would do with Damon/Matsui. High salary, but they are very productive batters. Runs being a premium right now it wouldn’t make sense to deal either away.

Cashman will need to do something. The problem isn’t just back of the rotation, its losing such a strong anchor in Wang which has its trickle down effect. Joba can fill that role a little bit, but he is green and will have his struggles as he finds his way through. Rasner isn’t the answer, neither is Giese.

I don’t have anything against either one, they just aren’t able to pitch in the rotation effectively. Bullpen/ long men maybe, which is useful, but the more they are out there the more exposed their skills are.

  187. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 28th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

But Ollie is not the move for Robertson.

Anyone know the move for Robertson yet?

  188. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 28th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Maybe the ‘net’s down in Queens?

  189. chr1zis June 28th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

I have a bad feeling my Fox station will be showing the Cubs/White Sox game and therefore the Yankees game will be blacked out on MLB TV… I am gonna be mad

  190. Blargh June 28th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

It’s pretty much minors or the scrap heap until mid-late July, which is when trades can finally be worked out.

Kinda reminds me of procrastination in school. Yaknow how nothing gets done until it’s either nearing or just about the deadline already.

    are you serious?

The difference between Girardi and Torre so far are that Girardi is stubborn and Torre played the hot hand. Everyones role is pretty much defined on this team. Even if Players aren’t playing to their capability, they still play.. Giambi, Cano, Cabrera, Abreu, Farnsworth, etc.

The reason Giambi is hitting like this is because he’s in a contract year. He knows that the yankees are not going to pick up that option. He’s gotta try and impress somebody. There is no other reason you can try and give to explain why he’s now (after 5 years mind you) hitting to the left side like he did in Oakland.

  193. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 28th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

    From Kat’s blog;

Here’s some pregame news and the lineup:

David Robertson was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Whenever he pitches, it will be his major league debut. Robertson said the callup came: “a whole lot quicker than I thought. I wasn’t really expecting it. I’m just glad to be here though.”
Robertson had a combined 1.39 ERA in 29 games at Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He had allowed just 26 hits and 22 walks in 51 2/3 innings, and had 74 strikeouts.
We haven’t gotten the corresponding 25-man roster move, but Sidney Ponson is going to be starting Wednesday and Dan Giese is moving to the bullpen, so it’s neither of them.
Joe Girardi said of Ponson: “We like the way he threw the ball last night.”
The Yankees are flip-flopping Mike Mussina and Joba Chamberlain in the rotation, since Mussina only threw 45 pitches in the rainout and Chamberlain threw 114 his last time out. Mussina will pitch Monday and Chamberlain Tuesday.

  194. Joe from Long Island June 28th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

I don’t know, Rebecca. If we can get through on the blog, why isn’t Pete.

I tend to worry. Now I’m worried.

If it’s a yankees game, then rain is always likely. Double header tomorrow?

  196. gayle June 28th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Switching Moose and JOba now ruins seeing JOba on Saturday for me against the Sox.GRRRRRR. I have seen Moose against the SOx this year and needless to say it was not any fun lol

Pete with a new post from Shea

  198. RhapsodyInBlue June 28th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

I doubt it will be Hawkins, who would then pitch in the games we’re blown out of.

“nothing he did in college and the minors ever argued better than a #4″

I’m a little late on this one, but I just couldn’t let it go Bart.

But this is just completely incorrect. Ian Kennedy was Baseball America’s Minor League starting pitcher of the Year in 2007. Now if that somehow translates to never showing better than a #4, on top of his actual performance that was better than Joba’s that year, I don’t know what kind of performance somebody would have to show to qualify as better than a #4. You can’t evaluate a kid on his first 10 starts, or first season. If you’d been a GM handling Edinson Volquez, you’d have dumped him too. And don’t give me fastball velocity as a come back – there are way too many examples of outstanding starters demonstrating command as the key success attribute.

Kennedy has as good a chance as anyone as being a solid major league starter. Could easily be better than a #4. That it may take more than 10 starts (and I guess his 3 starts last season in a playoff race in September were meaningless) for him to show himself doesn’t surprise me. But you expert evaluators here watching YES and your laptops must know better.
