Perez, not Steinbrenner, owns the Yankees

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jun 29, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Oliver Perez is 5-1 in his career against the Yankees. He is 4-0, 1.21 against the Yankees as a Met.

He is 46-51 against everybody else in his career. Theo Epstein is plotting as we speak. Wonder if he can trick Omar Minaya into a trade? Yeah, I think he could.

Meanwhile, it’s a good thing (depending on your viewpoint) that the game is over. It has been pouring at Shea Stadium for about 45 minutes.

Left handed pitchers are our daddys.

And because Girardi thinks Giambi,Cano,Abreu can’t hit them.THis was he’s lost.

    No worries…Thanks Houston!!

I am a believer.I think the Rays are for real.

Of course we have a great baseball day yesterday and follow it up with today.

    At least Spain won.

We have a stretch for more than a week without an off day and we had that doubleheader. I dont think he expected much out of Rasner so decided this game would be a chance to rest his players so they do not have to keep sitting through this stretch. Plus, we got the Sux over the weekend. Rasner has bad luck, he is vs. Beckett

    Parrot Guy,

Of course they are for real. Their entire team is like 1st round picks that all seem to pan out, their farm system has like three future aces to go along with their aces Kazmir and Shields. They have offense with Upton, Crawford, Pena, and more. They have defense and they are really young. This year or next year, they will win the WS and bring #1 home.

Thank goodness George is not running the team, he’d find a way to get Oliver Perez.

  10. Yankee Trader June 29th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Oliver Perez is a FA for 2009.
    Not impressed with Robertson-velocity,command, movement.
Rasner lucky to only give up 2 runs on 8 hits and 3BB in 5 innings.

  11. JMO June 29th, 2008 at 5:58 pm

Did anybody see Beckett’s little bat tantrum in the Red Sox dugout after he walked the pitcher and gave up the second run to Berkman? That almost made up for the Yankees loss.

With all the years of the Rays being bottom feeders, it was only a matter of time before receiving the No. 1 pick and seeing them progress would mushroom, even with losing Josh Hamilton as a Rule 5 player.
In the spring, many analysts saw the team ready to turn the corner and now they believe in themselves.
With a half season to go, it remains to be seen what lack of pennant push experience or a major injury will do but as of now, nothing seems to bother them.
The old adage: winning breeds confidence.

  18. Peterson June 29th, 2008 at 6:20 pm

Just because you have high picks doesn’t mean you are going to be good.

    Ask the Pirates and Royals.

  19. Neon Gold June 29th, 2008 at 6:21 pm

At least Girardi kept all the good hitters in the lineup on Sat. Before he gave this game away.

Rasner is Rocket in his prime. He doesn’t need runs.

  20. Neon Gold June 29th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

“Thank goodness George is not running the team, he’d find a way to get Oliver Perez.”

It would be hell having a good lefty who actually pitches into the 7th inning and strikes hitters out. Thankfully we got Rasner and Giese and Ponson now. Keep George away from pitchers that have talent!

  21. jstuddle June 29th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Seems to me that any pitcer facing the poor lineup that Girardi threw up there today would own them. It would make sense to stack the lineup with righties if you had righties who could actually hit.

  22. Ho Down June 29th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

The Cle GM smiles every time Rasner and Giese throw a pitch.

  23. TKinDC June 29th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

    jstuddle –

yeah – all we could muster in the line-up today was last year’s mvp, last year’s #3 in mvp voting, a HOF short-stop who will get 3000 hits and a terrific lead-off hitter.

we clearly had no chance with a $60M 1-4.

  24. Guiseppe Franco June 29th, 2008 at 6:36 pm

It would be hell having a good lefty who actually pitches into the 7th inning and strikes hitters out.

    Hey Neon,

Never mind that Perez doesn’t do it against anyone else. It’s Fool’s Gold.

There’s a reason he was pitching for his spot in the rotation today. It’s not because he’s been pitching like he did today with regularity.

  25. sunny615 June 29th, 2008 at 6:39 pm

sad – we had a major opportunity to gain a game on the Sawx… can’t even beat Perez… grife.

  26. rconn23 June 29th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

Saw someone throw Robertson under the bus. Let’s not give up on him after one outing.

Who cares about Oliver Perez. Let Met fans stick out their chests today. They know he’ll walk six the next time out.

It’s all about the Rangers now. Go Joba!

  27. Fred June 29th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

Since our back end never does it why is it fools gold?

  28. Guiseppe Franco June 29th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Robertson gets a pass because it was his debut.

His #1 priority has to be locating his fastball. If he can do that, his curve and change will be that much more effective.

  29. Sean Serritella June 29th, 2008 at 6:48 pm

I’m happy that Hank is running this team because if his father was, there would be all kind of trades and most likely, the farm prospects would all be gone.

  30. Fred June 29th, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Any lineup with Melky hitting 6 is a joke.

  31. raymagnetic June 29th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

“Since our back end never does it why is it fools gold?”

Have you seen Perez’ numbers this year?

  32. DFox June 29th, 2008 at 6:57 pm

The Yankees have been handed a gift in the next series. While they are playing the Rangers, the Red Sox and Rays will slug it out. All the Yankees have to do is WIN and they gain ground on one of the teams. Doesn’t sound that difficult. With every single game in the Texas series the Yankees have the pitching advantage and it’s not even CLOSE. The Rangers are over-matched in every game. This is a no excuse series coming up. The Yankees need to sweep. I think the series could be a turning point, at least it could put them in very close striking distance to the Red Sox or Rays, depending on who wins that series.

  33. Blargh June 29th, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Perez has a 5.58 era/1.651 WHIP against teams not named Yankees this year

So why is it that Perez pitches better against us than Santana?

  34. Jack Nicholson June 29th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

Oliver Perez is an Ace. No doubt about that.

  35. steve June 29th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

I understand the reasons why Girardi sat Abreu, Giambi and Cano. All 3 have played a lot of games and need some off days so they stay fresh. I also understand the reasoning to go with a righty dominated lineup but when you have the likes of Christian, Melky, Molina and of course the pitchers slot in your line up you are really giving up a lot of hits at the bottom of your line up.

We need to find some righty hitting to balance out this lineup and now also offset the loss of Matsui who can be out more than another 10 days if he needs to have surgery on his left knee. Cashman needs to bring Gardner up to give the line up another look. Gardner is a lefty, which does not solve the inbalance in our line up but he does give us a different look and may be a better option than Melky is right now.

we do need to find a righty bat, preferably for a corner spot in the outfield. Why not put Melky in package with prospects for a hitter and reliever. Lets look at Holliday, Guillen, Bay, Nady, Wigginton, or even Durham (who can play in outfield and be the spare infielder for 2b if Cano needs time off (Gonzo would go back to minors. Betemit would remain primary back up for 3b and ss when not playing first or DH. We need a professional hitter in on this team who can hit with men on base. We just seem to struggle when we have runners on. Our offense is no where near as potent as it has been in the past. While it is a priority to improve our rotation and pen, we need another solid bat that can help us win close games. This team shows very little ability to come from behind and stronger hitting will help us on the back end of our rotation where guys like Rasner and Ponson are going to have to win more 6-5 or 7-6 games.

Cashman has done a poor a poor job building this squad and there are way too many holes in our offense.

  36. steve June 29th, 2008 at 7:13 pm

Ranger series is not a walk in the park. We have Moose, Joba and Ponson going in this series against two lefties and Millwood. We struggle against lefties and lets face it the Rangers can hit. Unless our pitchers dominate I am not comfortable with us taking all 3 games and would not be surprised if we dropped 2-3 in this series. We are a very inconsistent and vastly over rated team

  37. DFox June 29th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

steve, if that happens then the Yankees have more problems than we realize. The Rangers can hit, but they sure as hell can’t pitch. When all the pitchers have 5 eras that means weaker teams have no problem scoring runs off them. The Yankee offense should beat up on their pitching, lefties, righties, switch pitchers, I don’t care. If they don’t, then it’s going to be hard for this team to be any good because they should be able to hit bad pitchers that everyone else destroys. I’ll give them a pass on Perez, but enough is enough.

  38. Yardley June 29th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

It is getting painfully obvious that Cashman needs to improve this team in a few key areas. A starter, a lefty, and a right handed hitter on the bench.

  39. Barry - acigarsmoker.com June 29th, 2008 at 8:58 pm

All Theo has to do is take Perez and a Non Hispanic, and trade 2 hispanics back. Omar will take that trade as he continues his quest for an all-hispanic team..

    JMO – I couldn’t agree more.
