The Subway Series turned on a balk yesterday as the Yankees beat the Mets again. Brian Heyman has the story.

Persistence paid off for Andy Pettitte as he beat the Mets and a rain delay.

Meanwhile Johan Santanna is starting to get a little frustrated reports John Delcos.

Dave Robertson pitched so well the Yankees had no choice but to give him a shot. This notebook also has updates on Hideki Matsui, Phil Hughes, Brian Bruney, Chris Britton, Ian Kennedy, Moises Alou, Andy Phillips, the newest Knick, Sidney Ponson and Kei Igawa.

A young couple from Wetschester and Rockland will visit 12 stadiums over the next 30 days. Jeff Gold has the story that we’ll all be envious of.

On the Sunday Baseball Beat we look at the Yankees and Mets at the midpoint of the season.

Rick Carpiniello realizes just how badly New York needs the new stadiums that are on the way.

The Subway Series was the subject of the Sunday pro-con.

I have read a lot of endless posts regard of Santana. Some players always put up sexy number but he can’t get the job done for whatever reasons. In contrast, Some players don’t have some “wow” numbers on paper, but they are winner and know how to win ball game. I will take Pettitte every day.

I agree wholeheartedly Jessica. If Johan’s velocity’s decreasing and he can’t get out of the sixth inning now, where’s he gonna be in 3 or 4 years? Let alone the 6 the Mets signed him for. Long term, I think the Yanks dodged a bullet not getting him.

“We’ve got to find a way to score some runs,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said.

“I remember when I was a hitter. I wasn’t a good hitter, but I was 3 for 50. And a guy says, ‘Jerry, when are you going to get some hits? When are you going to get hot?’ I said, ‘I am hot.’

    “I’m just hoping we’re not hot.” …

Jerry Manuel can be pretty funny at time. I thought this was priceless. While some fans may take it as not caring, I think he uses comments like this to help lighten things up. I bet there is a lot of tension in that clubhouse, that never helps.

It seems that Santana is throwing a lot of pitches per inning as well. While strike out pitchers trend up in their pitch counts, he isn’t getting any deeper into games than Joba is, and with Joba being a rookie – one adjusting to being a starter – it is a little more understandable.

Some pitchers just don’t get a lot of run support. Some it because of their clubhouse attitude, some because they take too long each inning, each pitch and it takes their team out of the game. For whatever reason, Santana doesn’t get run support.

While every pitcher has some games like that, you can’t put the whole blame on everyone else if the larger number of games that pitcher starts means few runs.

BTW, Reyes may have some skills, but he is really not very smart as a player. While his skill level may be higher than Jeter, Jeter gets the most out of his skills, Reyes doesn’t.

Damn skippy. I don’t care if he struck out 8 guys or not. You can’t have your #1 guy go out against a cross-town rival on national television and thro 113 over 6. Bad job.

The 1st 2 years of Santana will be good but not outstanding. Certainly not top of the rotation numbers for the highest paid pitcher in the game. The last years of his contract will have bomb written all over them with loss of velocity and penchant for giving up the long ball.
The red flags were there last September with velocity loss and most teams paid attention. All but 3 teams which saw 2 teams playing hot and cold interest and one showing desperation from an absolute meltdown last September.
The Mets will get to find out what it’s like to carry an albatross contract.

Can’t jump on Santana… quality starts just about every time out. Think where the Yankees would be if they had gotten 15 starts from this guy instead of the 15 they got from Kennedy, Hughes and Igawa (0-8, 8.60). I was in agreement with the Yanks not making the deal/signing, but Santana is still outstanding.

Looking forward to a pair of scoreless innnings from Robertson this afternoon.

Wish I had a month to tour. In September I will be doing five games in six days. (Red Sox, yankees, Phillies, O’s, Nat’s) Cannot wait.

Be careful what kinds of words you use. People can have different opinions on different stuff. You can keep yours and I can keep mine, but don’t attack others who have different opinions as yours.

Game 7 of the World Series in a must win I’d take Andy over Johan as well. We’ve seen Andy time, and time again come up huge. Andy always seems to find a way to win in the biggest spots. To me that is the very definition of an “Ace”. Jessica certainly isn’t alone in her opinion.

  13. jessica(Let's Go Yankees) June 29th, 2008 at 11:42 am

Thanks for support. I don’t mind people have different opinions, but I just don’t like people to call others moron because of different opinions.

I’d take Pettite because he’s a long time Yankees and we share a birthday (June 15) albeit a few (14) years apart.

He has been excellent at times and has had a superb career, but he’s laid a few post-season eggs too. This year it’s a legit debate, but honestly, which guy do you expect to win more games in the next five years?
