Update on Bobby Murcer

Peter Abraham
June
30

The Yankees just now released this statement from Bobby’s family:

Bobby Murcer continues to recover from the effects of cancer and shingles, which caused him to cut short his broadcasting work and his book tour earlier this month. He has been under medical care in Oklahoma City.

The cancer treatment over the last 18 months has been intensive and has, as a side effect, somewhat compromised his immune system and made the fight all the more challenging. While he has shown some measured improvement in recent days, this is clearly a major battle, as all who have been through it understand.

Bobby remains hopeful that he will be able to resume his broadcasting work down the road, but for now, is appreciative of the thoughts and prayers of his fans, and wants them to know that he is aware that he is in their hearts, as they are in his.

I was just thinking the other day when they showed a rebroadcast of an old Mets-Yanks game that we hadnt heard anything about Bobby for a while since he had to cut the book tour short.

Prayers are with him and his family. Tough battle for him that is for sure.

  3. Frank

    All the best to Bobby!

Athletes are a bunch of cake eaters when you measure them against the heroics of Murcer and so many others who go toe to toe with cancer.

Keep fightin’ the good fight, Bobby!

My thoughts and prayers are with the Murcer family during this difficult time.
Hard to believe that it has been 26+ years since my father took me to see the Yankees play the Orioles at the Stadium and we headed into the bottom of 9 with the Yankees down 4-3. In between innings, I was pretty bummed about a potential Yankees loss. My dad looked at me and said “Don’t worry about it. Bobby Murcer is going to get up and hit a home run to win it for the Yankees!” Sure enough, Bobby hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to win the game 6-4. What a great memory. Keep fighting, Bobby!

Here’s the box score from that game:

    Hang in there, Bobby!!

  25. Tim

To me Bobby Murcer is right up there with Lou Gehrig in my mind when I think about what it means to be a Yankee. There is not a mean bone in his body and he “oozes” class and dignity. There is not a better ambassador for the New York Yankess and for baseball as a whole than Bobby Murcer. God bless you Bobby and I will get down on my knees and pray for you and your family in this time of pain and suffering. You are very much missed and this summer has not been as joyful witout your insights and humor on the Yankee broadcasts. Get well quickly! We miss you!

  26. Dara

I was suppose to meet him at book signing here in NJ, he cancelled. Now I know why he did. I knew he had cancer, but did not know it got this bad. All my best to him and his family. Get well soon! We miss hearing your voice on the YES network.

God Bless Bobby – Get well soon!!
P.S. I love his book – it’s a great read. Brings back some great memories from when I was a kid and learned alot of things about the Yankees & baseball I never knew.

  28. barry - acigarsmoker.com

One of the classiest statements I ever read… Hope he gets through this challenge..

  29. nick

For some reason I knew he was going to pass away soon after I’d first read this… RIP.

  30. Dennis Ferguson

Bobby was just great. I knew him briefly when I was a classmate with his older brother, Duane, at Southeast Jr.-Sr. Highschool in about 1958.

Duane and I played baseball also and we were 3 years older than Bobby. His whole family was great and hard workers.

I am sure Bobby’s spirit will arrive at the very best place.

    Sincerely, Dennis McClendon – Ferguson.
