YANKEES (44-39)
Damon DH
Gardner LF
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Posada C
Cano 2B
Betemit SS
Cabrera CF
Chamberlain RHP

Kevin Millwood (5-4, 5.08) vs. the New York hitters.

He came up as a shortstop, however. … The Yankees have lost three of five and six of their last 10. … The bullpen has been strong the last four games (12 10 1 1 4 8). … Joba has a 0.98 ERA in his last three starts. The Yankees are 4-1 in his starts. … The Yankees have scored five runs in their last three games, hitting 13 of 94 (.138) including 3 of 22 (.136) with RISP.

UPDATE, 6:07 p.m.: Two pitching lines from the GCL today:

What’s the record for most different lineups in one season?

Pete, you should have asked those guys you were hanging out with last night….

  2. JohnC

WOW! Jeter not in the lineup? I’m sure that didn’t sit too well with him. He’s not injured is he?

  3. gayle

    Betemit at SS oye vey…

Alberto Gonzalez is on this team why again

  4. Brent (This Damon Guy's For Real, Huh?)

Thank God this thread was started. Too much anger due to differing opinions in the last one.

  5. raymagnetic ®™

Well I guess a bunch of you are not going to be happy.

Doesn’t appear that everyone’s favorite Gardner is here to take Melky’s spot at all.

  6. SOAPTER

    OMG!! No Jeter…

  7. Fredo Corleone

    Melky lives!

Odd lineup. The type you might throw out there if you feel like you have a pitcher who won’t require too many runs.

  8. Andrew

At least we are going with the “a” team tonight.

  9. Fire Joe Girardi

    Fire Joe Girardi

  10. John

these are supposed to be 9 of the most imporant games of the year and each night one of our stars is “getting a night off” this is ridiculous… these veterans are professional atheletes who are trained to play every day…

i wonder who is “getting a night” tonight on the red sox or rays as the two of them continue to blow past us in the east

  11. Mike

How the hell does Melky get to keep SUCKING for this long and still be in the lineup every day?

  12. Sports Update

Girardi is doing what he can to try and shake things up. Jeter has become a singles hitter and needs a blow. Let’s see what Gardner can do. We have seen yesterday’s game about 15 times this year—good pitching and a lifeless offense that becomes even deader in the late innings. Last year’s team had the ability to come from behind late—not this year.

  13. Mhe PhD

I guess Girardi didn’t read the post about Melky…

  14. mark

automatic out melky is back in there.

  15. Russell NY

I’m sure Jeter will pinch. I like the Damon, Gardner combo. Think that will work real well. Hard to double up those two.

  16. Bob(the original)

Good, Jeter needs a day off. He looks awful at the plate.

  17. mel

We’re definitely testing the ‘you don’t need an all-star at every position’ theory.

Who knows? These guys may get it done. And Betemit might hit a monster shot from the right side. You just never know. Baseball’s a strange, unpredictable game.

  18. 86w183

More like the A-minus team. Yanks keep playing 23 vs 25 with Moeller and Gonzo gathering dust. No problem with giving Jeter a day, he probably needs one every other week at tis stage, but hard to understand not giving Gonzo the game even though Joba is not a ground ball pitcher.

Over under with this lineup? 3 1/2 ?

  19. Rishi

Is it bad to want the RS to win tonight?

  20. Russell NY

Question: if Gardner’s on first and Damon’s on second, is Gardner allowed to pass Damon or will we have to tell Gardner to hop on one leg?

  21. a

    on http://sportsnynj.blogspot.com/
there is a good blog about the yankees

  22. Brent (This Damon Guy's For Real, Huh?)

Apparently everyone’s hatred for Jeter in the last post caused Girardi to take him out of the line-up altogether. Wow. Thanks guys, I hope you’re happy.

  23. Laura - Don't give up on Melky!

Jeter needs a day off. I’d like to see A-Rod sit one out soon as well.

  24. Bob(the original)

And BTW, I think we are witnessing what happens to this lineup without a healthy Matsui in it.

Guy has never gotten the props he deserves.

  25. Brian

Girardi probably had to fight Jeter to get him to skip a day. I guess were resting our players so they are fresh against Boston?

  26. Russell NY

“automatic out melky is back in there.”

    Yep, but Molina isn’t :)

  27. j

i noticed jeter was not running as hard as usual last night on his groundballs. Could he be hurt?

  28. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    keeps mouth shut about Melky

I imagine Jeter’s just getting a ‘much needed’ day off.

  29. StandingO'Neill

I have no problem with Jeter sitting, he could use a rest here. plus we have no idea if he’s hurting or what. But seriously whats it going to take to get Melky to take a night off? Does he have to go hitless for the month? He’s not Willie Mays in center, sit him on the bench.

I feel like Maddog here, and I just want to yell at Girardi….1 TIME, 1 TIME, CAN YOU SIT HIM ON THE BENCH ONCE!!! I could be wrong but has he sat other than when he was suspended? This is getting ridiculous now.

I don’t need to see him traded, released or sent to AAA, just sit him for a day or two. He’s an automatic out, try something different for a day. If you love his defense so much put him in the game after the 7th. Enough is enough.

  30. Nick in SF

Yes, Brent, if we needed even more evidence that Girardi scans the LoHud comments section before he fills out the lineup, here it is.

  31. Bombshell

Wow Girardi way to blow these important games off by giving your captain a day off. Yeah Jeter’s having a sub-par season at the plate by his high standards but good god he’s been hitting .300 since June 1st, he’s looked a heck of a lot better since the end of May and last week you saw the power is still there with his 3 crushed doubles to center. You know he hates not playing so instead Clueless Joe sits him instead of Mendoza over there in CF.

  32. ERâ„¢ (The Last Yankee Fanâ„¢)

5+ ERA for Millwood, another almost unhittable pitcher
    just like Feldman and Perez

  33. Jorge Steinbrenner

I swear if Jeter was at first base tonight, I would have jumped straight off the Brooklyn Bridge.

  34. raymagnetic ®™

“Good, Jeter needs a day off. He looks awful at the plate.”

Huh? The guy who had a 15 game hitting streak until yesterday?

  35. Jorge Tabata

Melky is 4 for 9 with a double and triple career vs. Millwood.

Not sure that means anything, but thats probably why Girardi had him in there today… no other logical explanation.

  36. Eugie

Jeter has to be hurt because he isn’t heating up and that’s the only time Giradi rests people.

  37. raymagnetic ®™

“these are supposed to be 9 of the most imporant games of the year and each night one of our stars is “getting a night off” this is ridiculous”

What makes these 9 games so important to you?

  38. Nick in SF

(p.s., confidential to “Brandon”: please please please don’t be offended if Jeter is called to pinch-hit for Gardner in a late-game double-switch situation. Hopefully the Yanks are up 9-0 and there’s no need for it.)

  39. Bombshell

    86w183 – I say 2.5 runs and 12.5 total bases today for the O/U.

  40. mel

    Rishi,

Yes! It’s morally wrong and they’re the WC leader.

The only time it’s okay is very late in the season and a win by them gets us into the playoffs.

  41. Ruhi

Jeter getting a day off, but Melky keeps on playing. I’m wondering if Joe is taking bong hits before writing out the lineup… How many different lineups have there been this season?

  42. Laura - Don't give up on Melky!

“these are supposed to be 9 of the most imporant games of the year and each night one of our stars is “getting a night off” this is ridiculous”

At this point, EVERY GAME is important.

  43. The Fallen Phoenix

Betemit is a better offensive player than the former Attorney General, hands-down. It’s hard to get too bent-out-of-shape re: which one is playing for Jeter. For what it’s worth, I think that Betemit’s offense will be a bigger difference-maker today than AG’s defense, considering offense, not run prevention, has been the Yankees’ problem these last few games.

And I think it’s absolutely imperative that Girardi continue to give his regulars days off to keep them fresh over the long run. It’s actually a very smart idea to rest them during this Texas series, since the Yankees can’t fall behind both the Red Sox and the Rays much during this series, even if they get swept: in which case, the Yankees lose one game off one if they split, or break even with the Red Sox if Tampa sweeps.

That’s absolutele worst-case scenario, obviously. And I think it’s reasonable to conclude that even if Jeter takes a day off, the Yankees can take at least one game from the Rangers this series.

  44. Bombshell

““Good, Jeter needs a day off. He looks awful at the plate.”

Huh? The guy who had a 15 game hitting streak until yesterday?”

Yeah I know, some people don’t think before they post. Plus I don’t see why he NEEDS a day off, he’s not 39 he’s 34, hardly ever wants to sit, so if he wants to play…WHY NOT PLAY HIM JOE!?!?

  45. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Every game is important, and this month may very well make or break our season.

That said, if Jeter’s aching, it behooves the Yankees to rest him now.

  46. StandingO'Neill

I gotta agree with Ray on this, what makes these 9 games so important? Say the yankees go 4-5, is the season over? So they go into the all-star break 4 over .500 instead of 6, does that really make a huge difference? The goal should be to win series. Its far to early to break down blocks of games and say they are must wins.

  47. Laura - Don't give up on Melky!

“I’m wondering if Joe is taking bong hits before writing out the lineup… How many different lineups have there been this season?”

As schizophrenic as these hitters have been all season, I don’t blame Joe for trying to shake things up. What he ran out there these last few games hasn’t worked. He gets a A+ from me for trying.

  48. V

Jetet needs a day off. He hasn’t been hitting like himself lately. Maybe the cracked bone in his hand is to blame.

  49. John

“what makes these 9 games so important”

9 game home stand before the all star break with 3 vs tex and then 4 vs boston and 2 vs tb…. its an important stretch for the yanks to close the gap before the break…

  50. john

Crist girardi can you just stick with one lineup. Not every guy needs a day off every day. I think we have only had the good lineup 3 or 4 times all year. That would be damon jeter bob alex giambi posada matsui cano melk. I like that lineup vs righties. Yes ppl are injured but even when we are healthy joe trhinks everyone always needs a day off

  51. Jorge Steinbrenner

if the rest of the team was doing the little things, you could put Gonzalez at short and, even with their offensive struggles, be solid up the middle defensively with Cano, Gonzalez, and Melky.

put hopefully it’s a well-deserved rest and a one day thing for the Cap’n.

  52. Rishi

Sorry, Mel – I never, ever have before, but it would be nice to not have the division over with early. Just trying to keep the Rays close (I CANNOT believe I just typed that!!!)...

  53. The Fallen Phoenix

Yes, Laura, every game is important. But you need to leverage the opportunity to rest your regulars against bad teams in non-divisional series (paricularly if your two major divisional rivals are playing a series against each other) if you want to keep them fresh for the stretch run.

Remember, Jeter’s going to be the starter for the All-Star game, so he’s not going to have the luxury of a proper “break” that he could probably do with. So why not rest him in a game the Yankees should probably win even without him?

Also, I think it’s interesting to note that the good gentlement at the Replacement Level Yankees Web Blog observed that the Yankees have outperformed their expected winning percentage thus far the last few weeks (largely thanks to that seven game winning streak), even with the recent slide.

  54. V

It is obvious that Jeter needs a rest.

  55. Laura - Don't give up on Melky!

So Jeter is getting a day off. I wonder if Girardi tells him to his face that he’s not playing or sends him an email.

  56. NJ in Tampa

Jeter was finally starting to drive the ball a little bit more sine he got plunked on the hand. Hopefully having today off will help him get rested and more healthy and he can finish up strong before the all star break and then have a hot second half. I remember in ‘04 when everyone was talking about how he was finished.I cant wait to see him prove them wrong again. The guy was at .317 before being hit by Cabrera. He then dropped all the way down to the .260’s. Was that really just a coincidence?

  57. Bench Melky

i don’t think Girardi quits MELKY just yet,
he is trying to get him out of the funk
by putting him in the lineup everyday,
and against a pitcher he hit well in the past.

    Go Melky!

  58. #9

“what makes these 9 games so important”

(Tries to think of witty response involving a Madonna reference)

  59. Bombshell

“What makes these 9 games so important to you?”

Well let’s see…is it easier to gain ground on teams when you play them or when you don’t play them? So because the Yankees are playing 6 games against teams they are battling in the division and WC, yes, they are important.

  60. Bill

The lineup is fine. They just need to hit with RISP.

  61. raymagnetic ®™

OMG, Jeter has played 162 games in a season exactly 0 times.

He has never played every game in a season. Hey Seuss Christo!

  62. Laura - Don't give up on Melky!

“Remember, Jeter’s going to be the starter for the All-Star game, so he’s not going to have the luxury of a proper “break” that he could probably do with. So why not rest him in a game the Yankees should probably win even without him?”

I don’t have a problem with Jeter getting a day off. I posted so just a few minutes ago.

  63. The Original 'V'

Everyone, please ignore any posts from ‘V’, ‘Original V’, etc. tonight. This troll is idiotic (as you can tell from his posts) and likely the same person that has impersonated mel and SJ44 at times.

Apparently, Pete will do nothing about it. So, if it happens to you, you’ll have nothing to do but change your name, as I will likely do tonight (if I decide to even bother).

  64. Tiki

Jeter knew he wasn’t playing today; he would never have gone on Mike & Mike this morning if he were on his regular schedule. What that means is Joe probably told him he needs a day off. He’s not hurt – he was hurt (I believe) after he got hit in the hand but Girardi has been resting all the usual suspects. Usually Girardi gives a reason for not playing these guys (i.e. not playing the lefties against Perez) that makes sense – at least, to him.

  65. Old Goat

    Betty at shortstop. Yippee!

Why does Girardi do this to the lineup all the time? The ones who should be sitting on the bench he plays. I don’t get it.

  66. Russell NY

    “Go Melky!”

That’s not allowed here, please go to an optimistic blog :)

  67. NJ in Tampa

    Tiki,

Jeter was on Mike and Mike this morning? Anyone get to hear it? What did he have to say? Thanks.

  68. raymagnetic ®™

“i.e. not playing the lefties against Perez) that makes sense – at least, to him.”

Makes sense to anyone who has bothered to look at Perez’ splits this year.

  69. pat

If the offense breaks out tonight, please spare me the DFA Jeter posts tomorrow.

  70. madonna

Arod may be a little late to the game today. Um..um…he has a few things to take care of today.

  71. Russell NY

“Remember, Jeter’s going to be the starter for the All-Star game, so he’s not going to have the luxury of a proper “break” that he could probably do with.”

Eh, the guys in the all-star game don’t even normally go for more than 4 innings a piece so he should be fine.

  72. Matt

Why is Jeter not playing? He should have sat him yesterday when they were facing pitcher he has never seen before not vs a veteran like Millwood. Jeter, and the rest of the team struggles vs guys they never see, so I would have given him yesterday off if he needed a day. Hopefully this doesnt mean he is hurt bc jeter never gets a day off. Well maybe he will pinch hit and win the game.

    http://newyorkyankeesnews.com/maelias33/weblog/

  73. GreenBeret7

Jeter’s being set down in this game for not hustling.

  74. GreenBeret7

Jeter’s being set down in this game for not hustling.

  75. Russell NY

“If the offense breaks out tonight, please spare me the DFA Jeter posts tomorrow.”

You won’t have to wait until tomorrow – you’ll start hearing them once Gardner scores his first run tonight.

  76. mel

    Original V,

Did you e-mail Pete with the specific posts? That’s Pete’s request for banning someone for ID theft.

  77. Old Goat

When the Yankees were going on that 7 game winning streak, how many different lineups did Girardi put up? I really don’t recall them that well, but it seems he made less changes during that period of time.

  78. Russell NY

“Jeter’s being set down in this game for not hustling.”

And A-Rod’s resting tomorrow for being linked to an affair with a 50 year old woman.

  79. mel

Was the linup announced earlier than usual?

  80. The Original 'V'

“Jeter’s being set down in this game for not hustling.”

That sounds like a fake GreenBeret7, also.

  81. gayle

The segment on Mike and Mke was taped it was not live. Obvious because Osi was the guest host and didnt ask a question say hello or anything and in addition there was noise in the background like he was somewhere else. They announced the Gillette thing yesterday so I am sure he did a bunch of media around it

  82. The Original 'V'

    “Original V,

Did you e-mail Pete with the specific posts? That’s Pete’s request for banning someone for ID theft.”

Yep. Nothing gonna happen. So, uh, get used to it or something.

    “Two things:

I can’t ban the guy unless he posts something objectionable.

I also can’t referee as to who “owns” what name. Has he attacked you or anything?

I would post as “Original V” or whatever.”

  83. pat

“Jeter was on Mike and Mike this morning? Anyone get to hear it? What did he have to say?”

Heard part of it. Mostly promoting his new Gillette gig. More personal stuff than baseball.

  84. Eugie

““i.e. not playing the lefties against Perez) that makes sense – at least, to him.”

Makes sense to anyone who has bothered to look at Perez’ splits this year.”

Doesn’t make sense if you realize that the pitchers splits aren’t the only stats that count.

  85. TL

About time Girardi realized this is 2008 and not 2001. A-Rod and Jeter need an occassional day off.

  86. Bob(the original)

Well, actually his hitting streak ended on Sunday, but that’s just details.

Take off your 1990’s pinstriped sunglasses and look at the numbers he’s put up even with that hitting streak. He clearly isn’t having a good year at all.

But don’t let the facts get in the way.

  87. GreenBeret7

No, V. It’s the real me. I just figured this comment was as valid as those about Cano, Abreu or Cabrera not hustling or Rodriguez or Posada not being “clutch”. I was feeling left out of those deep thinking conversations.

  88. whozat

“Why does Girardi do this to the lineup all the time? The ones who should be sitting on the bench he plays. I don’t get it.”

Because, if you had your way, the regulars would play every single day until they broke down. And the bench guys would be even worse once they got forced into regular duty, because they hadn’t played in months.

  89. pat

Osi was pretty good on Mike and Mike.

  90. MoBoy(aka McLovin)

Of course Joba has a 0.98 ERa in he’s last 3 starts they were against N.L teams.I’m waiting for JOba against the Red Sox.That will tell me if he is a true Ace.I hope he destorys them.Because all this talk of protecting our young has lead us with just Joba.

Thats not enough. He ain’t gonna be the X-Factor for this team like last year to the post-Season.

  91. mel

    Original V,

Sorry to hear about that. BTW, is it the fake V that tells people to go away? I want to know which one to not consort with.

  92. Doreen

If Jeter has a new gig for Gilette, does that mean that we won’t have to watch the Ford commercials anymore? Please?

  93. The Original 'V'

“No, V. It’s the real me. I just figured this comment was as valid as those about Cano, Abreu or Cabrera not hustling or Rodriguez or Posada not being “clutch”. I was feeling left out of those deep thinking conversations.”

Aha. Sounded like something our resident impersonator would say ;-)

  94. raymagnetic ®™

“Doesn’t make sense if you realize that the pitchers splits aren’t the only stats that count.”

May not be the only stats that count, but when you see lefties have hit under .200 for the year on him it counts for something.

  95. TT Boy

Cabrera at this point is an automatic out. Why not try Gardner in CF when Matsui is ready to play next week?

  96. Brock

For God’s sake, pick a lineup and stick with it Girardi.

How can anyone on this team get comfortable with their spots if they are constantly getting shuffled up and down and in and out of the lineup?

This has been my biggest complaint this year when it comes to Girardi. Seems like he thinks everyone needs to play only 140 games or so.

This team is getting old, but it is not that old yet.

  97. NJ in Tampa

“Take off your 1990’s pinstriped sunglasses and look at the numbers he’s put up even with that hitting streak. He clearly isn’t having a good year at all.

But don’t let the facts get in the way.”

Ignorance is bliss I guess. He was hitting .317 when hit on the hand by Cabrera. He then goes 0-21 and gets in a slump that causes his average to drop intot he .260’s after being hit? Is that really a coincidence? Finally despite many of the games being only 1 hit he lifts his average up into the .280’s as he has gotten healthier. But yes, he’s definitely finished.

  98. The Original 'V'

    “Original V,

Sorry to hear about that. BTW, is it the fake V that tells people to go away? I want to know which one to not consort with.”

I said it in response to our idiot friend a few times, and he latched onto it.

  99. Nick in SF

MoBoy, Joba’s performance on Sunday night will determine whether or not he’s a true Ace?

    That’s it?

    Really?

  100. TL

“Heard part of it. Mostly promoting his new Gillette gig. More personal stuff than baseball.”

Must a razor that perfects the fade w/o having to go to the ‘shop.

The fact of the matter is he hit well over .300 and started to hit for more power towards the end of the hitting streak.

We weren’t talking about his year on a whole. You saying he’s been awful at the plate reads stupidly considering he was coming off of a 15 game hitting streak.

  102. Bleacher Creature

Trying to figure out what is worse. Listening to this “V” whine all day or the people throwing Jeter under the bus.

    Toss up at this point.

  103. GreenBeret7

V., I guess I should be more careful about pretending to be the fake GB7.

Yup. And was having a decent year before getting plunked too.

  105. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Wow, 100 comments to the thread already and we’re still about three hours from game time.

  106. V (original)

I hope the Joba debate is over this time.

  107. yankee lover

over managing again. I guess being 6 games behind the Rays is not an emergency for Girardi. The team is struggling and he sits Jeter? and sits his best guys regularly? A day off? what does that mean? He still gets to the park, takes Batting practice etc the only thing he doesnt do to make it a “day off” is take 3 or 4 at bats, and field a few grounders, and make a few throws. Does anyone think that really gives him a “day off”?? Its marginal. There is no physical resting difference unless a guy is injured. He will not “recharge” or be saving strength or juice by missing a few AB`s- a guy like Jeter probably takes grounders and more BP than normal on a day off anyone so it defeats the dumb purpose. Who are the Red Sox giving off tonight? nobody!

  108. Eugie

“Because, if you had your way, the regulars would play every single day until they broke down. And the bench guys would be even worse once they got forced into regular duty, because they hadn’t played in months.”

You mean like how Girardi has played Melky and Cano in 81 games this season or how he handled Shelley Duncan when he was here?

  109. MadForYanks

For those of you who were decrying Melky’s range on the other post, just wait until you get a look at Betemit. There was a reason he only played SS for a couple days when DJ was hurt, before the Attorney General was called up. But since Joba doesn’t get many groundballs, I guess it doesn’t matter too much.

For those of you who don’t think Jeter was hurt, I have a season ticket in Tier Reserve Section 6. We could hear it when Cabrera’s pitch hit Jeter’s hand-loud and agonizingly clear. Even if the hand was miraculously not broken, it must have been mashed-hard to swing, much less hit a ball with a bat. In fact, the Daily News had an interesting interview with Kevin Long the other day, where he detailed what the injury had done to Jeter.

And from what I could see last night from my excellent vantage point, Jeter was running hard to first base, although maybe his knee is bothering him.

p.s.-You can’t send Melky back to AAA. He’s been in the majors for part of four seasons, so he’s out of options, and IMHO goodand cheap-enough so someone would claim him off waivers.

  110. BOB

    WOW, wait a second and think about something here;
Joe G, I`m sure has his reason and knows a lot more then the average LoHud visitor. For one (and I`m also just an average visitor) Melky is hitting .444 in 9 AB`s agains tonights pitcher. Whilst Jeter is hitting .250! Isnt this a good time to rest him. Right he`s not 39, but he is getting older and has been hurting, while its never the worst thing to rest a player (escpecially with the Boston and Tampa series coming up) And it wasnt so long ago that everyone was screaming for him to get a rest.
Yes Melky needs to sit, but maybe he gets the shot tonight against the Righty who he has hit well previously?1

Lets look forward to a good offensive night (we`re due for one)as Cano and the `Stache also hit over 440 against Milwood!

  111. Bob(the original)

    Who said he was finished?

People here are in such an outrage that Jeter gets a day off and I simply state they he could use one.

280/340/388 this year for him. When was the last time you saw those kind of numbers from Jeter?

A .728 OPS is so far below what he normally has that it should be telling everyone something. If some choose not to see it, what can you do?

  112. frits

not having registration is just dumb at this point. its not like this would be the first website to require it…

that said, don’t know if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but andy phillips got DFA’d today. poor guy.

  113. mel

    espn headline:

“A-rod intends to pass on homerun derby”...cuz he’ll be too busy making passes at 50 year old muscle mamas.

    (obligatory Madonna/A-rod joke)

  114. TL

Shelley Duncan? He’s AAAA all the way. He was great last year but he’s not a major leaguer.

  115. MadForYanks

For those of you who were decrying Melky’s range on the other post, just wait until you get a look at Betemit.

    Oops, obviously I meant Jeter’s.

  116. Paulio

Millwood is Cy Young compared to the last two pitchers that have shut us down.

  117. RalphieD

i like the lineup…bottom line is this lineup has the potential to score just as much as any other…

  118. Patrickâ„¢

Clearly Jeter should be DFA’d immediately.

  119. Rickshaw

“that said, don’t know if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but andy phillips got DFA’d today. poor guy.”

He gets 300 grand for 3 days of “work”. I should feel sorry for him why?

  120. Bombshell

“Take off your 1990’s pinstriped sunglasses and look at the numbers he’s put up even with that hitting streak. He clearly isn’t having a good year at all.

But don’t let the facts get in the way.”

Of course he isn’t. Hitting over .300 since June 1, crushed 3 doubles to center last week, 15 game hit streak, 38 game on base streak, over .300 with RISP in 2008, only 37 K’s, 3 triples, 6 2B, 16 runs scored in his last 19 games, 8 RBI in his last 16 games. Only 6 errors (2 of which were pathetically scored).

  121. Eugie

Oh and then there’s Billy Traber.. the bullpen version of Duncan… the forced Carl Pavano… Great job in handling this guy.

  122. NJ in Tampa

“People here are in such an outrage that Jeter gets a day off and I simply state they he could use one.

A .728 OPS is so far below what he normally has that it should be telling everyone something. If some choose not to see it, what can you do?”

Don’t get me wrong I have no problem with Jeter getting the day off. I’m happy he is. But its pretty funny how everyone is acting like he is finished.

We’ve seen numbers from Jeter much worse than 280/340/388 just a couple of years ago….and he was healthy then, unlike this year. We all saw how hot he got in the second half of that season.

The .728 OPS is telling me something. That he has been injured. Not that he is finished. He was having a par for the course Jeter season (.317)before getting hit and I don’t see any reason why as he gets healthy he cant hit at least .300 the rest of the way either.

  123. V (original)

Jeter hasn’t hit with any power because of the broken hand. He needs some rest. Maybe a DL stint.

  124. Mike

Get ready for a double steal tonight…..Damon and BG

  125. Matt

As long as this is just a day off for Jeter its not a big deal. Every player needs one and he is 34, hard to believe, and people at that age need days off. No one plays every inning of every game anymore. Its just not heard of. If he is hurt the Yankees are in big big BIG trouble.
    http://newyorkyankeesnews.com/maelias33/weblog/

  126. GreenBeret7

This is actuallythe best time to have Jeter sit for a game. Common sense says that because Chamberlain is pitching there shouldn’t be a lot of ground balls for Betnd balls for Betemit to deal with. Chamberlain, if he has his control, should have plenty of strikeouts and fly balls.

Trade him now! Bring Felipe Lopez in here! What great thinkers we got in this joint.

  128. #9

“Jeter was on Mike and Mike this morning? Anyone get to hear it? What did he have to say?”

He said that you’ll love the roof on the new Vista.

  129. Buttermaker

You do realize that these players aren’t robots and need an off day every now and then?

  130. GreenBeret7

Sorry about the pathetic typing. My paid typist didn’t show up again, today. If she wasn’t such a NY cutie and college student, I’d fire her.

  131. Montclair

Betemit has horrendous range at SS. He can barely move at 1b. The only thing he can do is run into a ball once a week and hit it out.

  132. Montclair

“He said that you’ll love the roof on the new Vista.”

    He’s a shortstop, right??

  133. Doreen

Since Matsui is on the DL, there is no “A” Line up available. Girardi is doing a decent job of rotating the various pieces in and out. Except for when they pulled off their 7-game winning streak, I don’t think he’s had the entire complement of players available to him on a daily basis for much of the season. You can criticize, but you have to be fair and you really can’t ignore all the circumstances.

  134. Doreen

    “He’s a shortstop, right??”

Ah, that’s what they all say.

    :)

(Think we’ve seen enough of this commercial yet????)

  135. E-Dog

It is amazing how a team with so many good hitters can’t score any runs.

Doesn’t help when they send out a 2b, CF, and catcher who by need plays a lot with OBP’s of around .300.

  136. whozat

“That will tell me if he is a true Ace.”

That one start? In his what, sixth MLB start EVER? THAT will tell you if Joba’s a “true ace”?

  137. MELKY IS DEAD

    MELKY IS STILL THERE.

There are two players that have been in the lineup for 3 consecutive games and that is Arod and 0-15 Melky

  138. Mike

I cant wait to see Joba vs. Josh Hamilton!!

    http://thefinalseason.blogspot.com/

  139. Yazman (David)

I like giving Gardner a chance by resting Damon and Abreu as needed, and giving Melky some bench time. Hopefully he gets on and keep pitchers off balance.

But don’t give up on Melky yet. Bench him for a couple weeks or send him down—that’s fine. But he’s just 23. Maybe we’ll see his energy stats pick up after a rest or SWB stint.

  140. saucY

wait a second, there’s actually a “Joba is not an Ace” crowd already???!!!??? ;)

  141. Yazman (David)

If Yanks were knocking the casing off the ball, I’d put AG at SS to rest the captain. But for now, I’ll take Betemit’s bat.

  142. stuart

this is the 11th highest scoring offense in baseball. that is a joke….

matsui has played decent when he has played but his power is way down.

the whole offense has basically stunk almost the whole season… they have pummeled almost no one and that is why they are where they are..

there best pitcher is hurt, hughes has sucked(no damn excuses) and there pitching has still be en almost decent..

Jeter offensively has been a dissapointment but then again he has many partners in that situation..

  143. #9

    “He’s a shortstop, right??”

It’s hared to tell when he wears those reading glasses.

  144. Francis The Praying Mantis

How good would Barry Bonds look in front of Alex with Juison behind The Rod. Id seriously consider signing him. Its very obvious we need a bat and he would cost us peanuts.

  145. Francis The Praying Mantis

  146. Bob(the original)

wait a second, there’s actually a “Joba is not an Ace” crowd already???!!!???

  147. raymagnetic ®™

“wait a second, there’s actually a “Joba is not an Ace” crowd already???!!!??? ”

He’s not an Ace Saucy. He only pitches like one.

Can you imagine if the Yankees make the playoffs and Joba pitches a bad game.

There will be about 3000 posts detailing how he isn’t an Ace.

  148. Mark

1 ARod to skip HomeRun Derby

2 Is ARod seeing Madonna? That would interesting, if only because Madonna is 17 years older.

  149. raymagnetic ®™

Joba could pitch 7 shutout innings in Game 7 of the WS and the Yankees could lose 1-0 because of an 8th inning HR and there would be about 10,000 posts per day detailing how the 8th inning in more important.

  150. TL

The Yankees knew Matsui was damaged goods in the offseason. They had him on the market but the right deal never came up.

    Laura,

The last part of my last comment was not aimed specifically at you, but in retrospect, no part of my comment should not have been aimed at you at all—I was initially responding to your 3:52 comment “At this point, EVERY GAME is important,” which I misinterpreted.

I need to get into the habit of quoting individuals when I reference them in my comments, especially since what begins as a response to one comment tends to ramble on and take a life of its own.

(For the record, I agree that every game is important, which is why I think resting regulars in game situations like today is so important.)

  152. yankeefan91

they should trade melky to the dodgers for a reliever

  153. Mark

    Barry Bonds?

Why not Sammy Sosa. Sammy bats righty, is injury free, had a better 2006 season, and is about four years younger.

  154. Doreen

I haven’t commented on the ARod/Madonna junk, because I do think it’s just that, however, I would think a potential obstacle to such a linking (aside from his marriage) is not her age, but her status as a mother of 3, and his status as a father of 2.

And that’s all I’ll say on that. I felt compelled because that’s two references to her age, and it’s really annoying. I don’t like Madonna, never have, but there’s no denying she is not your mother’s 50.

  155. TL

All this Madge/ARod talk is good publicity for baseball in England (where Madonna lives).

  187. V

“Melky would be an ideal bench cheerleader. Look at the bench for the Celtics. They were crazy cheering on their more talented teammates.”

Melky carried us in April when we had nobody playing well. He is the best defensive centerfielder in the majors.

  191. V

“April is basically Spring Training and as LaTroy said “Spring don’t mean sh*t.””

Those games in April sure do count in the standings.

  192. Long Fly Ball

Bonds would instantly help the lineup.

He’d be a better bet than Jason Lane or Shelley Duncan.

What else we going to do if Matsui is out for a month? We are already trying to survive the loss of our #2 pitcher.

  193. ASNKY

    9 K’s
    4 hits.
    2 walks.
    1 run.

I’m hoping that’s Joba’s line for 7 complete innings instead of the team’s line for 9.

So Jeter gets a day off. Why not give it to him on the day the hottest pitcher on the team pitches? He can always come in as a PH if they need him.

I will not pay attention posts that are overly critical of Girardi’s every thought, over analyzes the large scale ebbs and flows of a player’s season (based on a single play here or there) or any other form of chicken little post.

Nor should you post them. Yes I know I’m not naming anyone I’m specifically referring to. Read all the posts over the last few days … it’s really hard to be specific.

  194. Long Fly Ball

This is the perfect game for Jeter to rest.

With the only strikeout pitcher in the rotation. We can afford Betemit’s terrible range at SS.

  195. GreenBeret7

Sorry, but, Jenn Sterger and friend are not the least bit appealing. Neither is the other female in the photo, for that matter. You can see better looking women at the sleaziest of strip bars and just as much plastic.

  196. whozat

“Melky carried us in April when we had nobody playing well. He is the best defensive centerfielder in the majors.”

Melky carried no one. He hit like an above-average CFer, yeah, but he certainly did not carry the team. Since then, he has been awful. Hot-streak melky is not the “real melky”. Neither is the guy we’re seeing at the plate right now, hopefully. He’s the sum of those two guys, most likely…the guy he was last year. Which is not that great. I was hoping for a rebound in plate discipline this season, which would have made him a quite useful offensive CFer, given his D. Though, he’s also demonstrably not the best defensive CFer in the majors. The guy on the Twins is. He is good, though.

Don’t even bring up Jason Lane or Shelley Duncan. They are brutal and are not even in the equation any more. Plus Barry is not long for this earth. Bonds=Lyle Alzado. Look at both of their cranial development. That ain’t normal.

  198. whozat

“Bonds would instantly help the lineup.”

Once he got back into playing. He hasn’t faced real pitching since last september.

He wouldn’t “instantly” do anything. He’d take a month (at least) to get his timing back. Since Matsui may be taking BP this week, it seems like signing Bonds right now would do nothing except exacerbate the DH logjam.

  199. billy

Jenn Sterger sold her soul to Brent Musberger.

  200. GreenBeret7

Francis, I have no idea why you are pathetic. I’m guessing that it’s bad upbringing, bad genetics or a combination of the two. Maybe a psychiatrist can give you the answers.

Do you take all your talking points from Pete’s post on the subject?

I get it. But Bonds isn’t normal players and if Matsui is down for some time we need a bat. Why not a free one?

I don’t believe in logjams. I believe in having as much talent as you can possibly can on the roster and performance dictating playing time.

As much trouble as Bonds brings, he would be a tremendous boost to this lineup, especially batting behind A-Rod and giving him some protection. Imagine the numbers A-Rod would put up sandwiched by Giambi and Bonds.

Mark, Is my judgement on those two women based on looks any different than anybody else’s that are based on what they perceive to be good looks? I never said anything about those women other than I don’t find silicone filled females as attractive. Never said a word about them as people.

  217. Jorge Steinbrenner

I’ve missed the past 200 or so posts, but has anyone suggested that Madonna would play a better CF than Melky yet?

  218. Nick in SF

Jorge, I think the consensus is that Melky is younger than Madonna but we’re not judging either of them as people.

  219. GreenBeret7

Ted, the “potshot” taken at Francine is about the constant attempts he makes at race baiting. There’s no need for it here or any where else. And, yes, I’m very proud of what I’ve accomplished. Who else do you know that’s been able to do what they enjoy and excel at for 36 years?

  220. farnsworthy

ray doesn’t respect gardner, but he respects melky. MAKES SENSE…............. NOT!!!

  221. raymagnetic ®™

One thing I think we do know, Madonna is not an Ace.

  222. mel

    ray,

She’s not an ace, but she can put down the side in the 8th.

  223. rb15

ha, raymagnetic. but she’s a perfect 8th inning pitcher!

  224. OKStateYankees

SI.com says that the Marlins could be interested in a reliever like LaTroy Hawkins.

    mel –
You know I’m a bit sensitive on the age thing.

My husband actually bought one of those question mark candles for me, and my daughters are sworn to secrecy. But it’s a genetic thing—my grandmother, God bless her, never told her real age, and if she was alive today, well, let’s just say if we believed her, I’d have been on the cover of the Enquirer as an 8-year-old mother!

I’m actually nervous about Joba tonight. He’s been pitching well, progressing each outing. But this lineup is pretty strong, the Rangers, and if the Yankees continue their offensive onslaught, I’m afraid Joba’s going to try to be too fine, too perfect.

    We’ll see, I guess. I’m a falteringly optimistic realist.

  226. GreenBeret7

Jorge, Madonna will never be allowed to play in center field for the Yanks regardless of how well she played for the Rockford Peaches. Everyone knows that she just wants to be running and have her breasts to just accidently pop out. That’s not going to bring more fans in to the park.

  227. spark

The Yanks are trying to break Gardner in gradually. There is still something special about playing center field for the Yankees so I think they want to ease Gardner in to the mix so as not to put too much pressure on him. Believe me, the higher ups are aware that Melky is not cutting it. Look for Melky to be trade bait in a move for more pitching before the summer is out.

  228. (the new) BOB - melky is a year younger then Gardner and Ellsbury

    Mr Bleacher Creature;

“Who cares how much younger he is?

He isn’t as good as either one.”

    What a load of Crap is that;
Lets try and proove some stuff to you-
Defence, we all know he kicks the average CFr and defintaly those 2. We remember amongs others the Melky catch!
He has been in enough hot streaks, in enough stints of hitting over .300 to prove he has what it takes to be a good hitter, Not a superstart but a good hitter (who plays great defence)
He hit .385 in his first 30+ gmaes, He`s had his fair share of walk offs/clutch hits (also remember he is #9).

AND AND AND he is only 23 9a year younger then King gardner and g-d ellsbury)Yes he has struggled and is struggling and maybe will struggle. BUT he will mature and to go with his defence can play a good few years with the Yanks (with Damon and Abreu going)
Im not saying dont sit him, just dont trade him or even talk about it

Finnally to even suggest hes worse the Gardnerm, you have to be insane! He is a year younger and been in the majors a good part of 3 years, making important hits and big plays! where the hell has the older Gardner been!!

discalimer- this post is in no way against garder, hope he does great!

  229. Doreen

Jorge Steinbrenner & Nick in SF –
Thanks for two of the funniest posts of the day!

  230. GreenBeret7

Mel, there’s a great open line there about Madonna’s chances in the 8th inning, but, it’s best that I let it pass.

  231. raymagnetic ®™

    Mel,

She could probably put down the whole team in perfect order.

  232. rb15

GB, but during her stay with Rockford Peaches, Madonna did make a nice catch up against the center field wall. She takes better routes to the ball then Melky does, and if the movie is to be believed, her OBP is fantastic. She has also never swung and missed. Let’s take a flier on her.

  233. Whiff (Cano's bat)

(Tries to think of witty response involving a Madonna reference)

    keep Arod close to “home”

  234. keith

The Yankees have used 61 different lineups this season. The team who has used the fewest has used 55. Shut the fck up.

  235. jimmy 27

    Whats the deal with Stenger???
    Can someone send the link?????

  236. Doreen

See, I’m just not getting these 8th inning innuendos. :(

(but, that’s okay, I don’t really want to know!)

  237. GreenBeret7

RB, Madonna’s never had a problem backing up to anything. Having her back plastered up against a wall is what she does best.

  238. Whiff (Cano's bat)

    Whats the deal with Stenger???

Makes you ignore the fact that the Florida State Football team has sucked for the past three years.

  239. Andy in Sunny Daytona

See if Pete can get a profile pic of Jen Sterger. If you ever want to find good truffles…nevermind.

  240. GreenBeret7

Doreen, it’s best you don’t know.

  241. Doreen

    GB7 –
I made it this far without knowing, I think I’ll do okay… :)

  242. mel

    GB7,

Aya! Didn’t even catch the double entendre.

BTW. Brandon won the Manny Knocks contest.

    From the FSU cowgirl thread:

Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)
    July 1st, 2008 at 2:57 am
Ok….sport journalism it is. Now I suddenly don’t feel like knocking Manny

  243. mel

    Doreen,

I think it has something to do with Madonna in her dominatrix gear.

  244. Bleacher Creature

Who cares if Melky is a 1 yr younger than Gardner and Ellsbury? He isn’t in the same class as Ellsbury for sure and it looks like Gardner is a much better offensive player.

Plate discipline, speed, gap power. What has Melky shown?

Who cares if the player is a yr younger if that player isn’t as good anyway?

  245. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Wow, those are some of the shortest pitching lines ever.

  246. MELKY IS DEAD

    MELKY SUCKSSSSS

  247. j

    Here’s an article from THT

    http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/lineup-variety/

Fewest used lineups in baseball is 55. The Yankees have used 56 different lineups.

  248. TGFizeek

Can someone set some expectation around Humberto Sanchez? I thought before he got hurt he had real big league promise and was intrigued when we got him in the Sheffield deal. Don’t hear his name mentioned as much as some other guys.

  249. (the new) BOB - melky is a year younger then Gardner and Ellsbury

    bleacher;

    you said your same point.
And my answer is That the fact that he is a year younger means a year more to mature (we`re all saying Gardner is a prospect and will mature- so treat melky the same way BECAUSE he is only 23)
yes he stinks now, and i 100% agree with sitting him, and agree that gardner should play some CF and put pressure on Melky!

yes gardner has more speed, but that doesnt mean melky doesnt have any he has stolen bases
Lets look at what he has that Gardnre doesnt!! Home runs and a better arm

In 2007 Cabrera was 4th in the American League in sacrifice flies (9), 5th in sacrifice hits (10), and 6th in triples (8).

he`ll come… Hes young, sit him 9or even if you can send him down a bit) but hes got the goods

  250. John

if we can get demasio marte for melk ide do it now
move gardner to center and experiment

  251. jimmy 27

    gardner on ESPN!

Nice to see Chris Britton ball it up. He will be a solid long-time pitcher for us. I know it!!!
