i agree and i've thought this for a couple weeks. we should give gardner a couple games in cf. not giving up on melky yet, just think they can be switched without losing too much.

melky needs more days off, for now.

who cares if he doesn't put all star type numbers up? Why do the Yankees need to have an all star at every position? Plenty of other teams have a solid defensive player who doesn't hit much in their lineup to anchor their defense. (Jason Bartlett in Tampa for ex). Melky isn't the reason why the Yankees stink.

On the defensive side you are not taking into account how often a runner doesn't try to advance due to Cabrera's arm. Often once the league sees someone can get runners like he did last year the number goes down sinse they don't run as freely.

I always bugs me when people trot out the "we have bigger problems" argument.

We have a reasonable alternative to consider at CF. We don't have one for 2B or the 4th and 5th starters. Marginal improvement is improvement nonetheless.

Gardner deserves a shot at consistent ABs for the next few weeks. Let's be honest - it is difficult to do worse than Melky has been recently.

BTW:

“…but is Melky’s arm really that much of a weapon anymore? Everyone knows not to run on him now.”

I am putting that in my "all-time" list at No. 1.
