A-Rod does a good deed

July
2

You may remember the post we had last week about John Challis, the terminally ill young man from Pennsylvania who visited the Yankees at PNC Park.

Well, the 18-year-old and his father wanted to visit the Stadium and already had plane tickets. When the Yankees found out, they got him a seat in the owner’s box on Tuesday night. Alex Rodriguez then arranged to meet with John and his dad at his apartment in Manhattan and drive them to the game.

“It was awesome,” Challis told reporters. “It was cool that somebody that big took time out of his busy schedule to take me for a ride to the ballpark.”

Great job by Alex and the Yankees to make this happen. Media relations guy Jason Zillo had a big hand in it.

nice one…too bad he didn’t get a good game to go watch

  2. David Robertson for Setup

    Arod is all class.

    WWMD- What Would Manny Do?

Something that wouldnt help his illness

  3. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

    WWMD- What Would Manny Do?

    Knock him ?

  4. David Robertson for Setup

Push, Knock,Choke…Its all possible when its Manny

Not to mention he would probably have to kill a club member to get the kid an owners box ticket

  5. Nick in SF

    Q: What would Manny Do?

A: This is an internal matter.

  6. Jorge Tabata

So we lost out on Carlos Perez too :(

  7. mel

Manny would’ve had his crew “encourage” them to give up the tickets since the traveling secretary didn’t do his job.

  8. Patrick Bateman

ARod also gave him a tour of his apartment. Maybe John got to see Madonna too.

  9. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

So we lost out on Carlos Perez too

Atlanta signed him for $600K, we signed a SS named Anderson Félix

  10. Nick in SF

But I bet Manny would’ve had Melky bunt. He’s crazy but he’s not THAT crazy.

  11. Nick in SF

    Anderson Felix?

Prince Felix? Sir Felix? Just Mr. Felix?

  12. Patrick Bateman

Here’s the complete story if anyone missed it.

  13. Rishi

Brandon - been wondering about the SP…is that “Starting Pitcher” (ref: Feliz)?

  14. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

    Rishi it’s King Felix’s HR

  15. Rishi

cool - it was bugging me that I couldn’t figure it out for sure…

  16. Zach in Port Jeff

Wait… who else did we lose out on?

    Please do not say Inoa.

  17. Josh

Surely Hank will have to start buying runs. Are those calls for Bonds getting louder?

  18. Josh

Inoa went to the A’s i think

  19. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

    Please do not say Inoa.

Afraid so and probably Yorman Rodriguez too

  20. David Robertson for Setup

    July 2nd, 2007

We were 10.5 back behind the Red Sox, tied in 3rd place , and 5 behind for the WC

    July 2nd , 2008

We are 7.5 back behind the Rays , and 5 games back of the Sox for 2nd place and the WC lead

Anyone who thinks were down and out. Think again. Check the stats, we are a 2nd half team. I dont see us getting swept, so a win tomorrow (with an obvious Sox win tomorrow) we should be in good shape this weekend. Will we sweep them? Absolutley not, but 2/4 is fine, but I prefer 3/4 if we can

  21. Josh

Left-handed pitcher Carlos Pérez ($600,000 with the Atlanta Braves), shortstop Anderson Félix ($500,000 with the New York Yankees), right-handed pitcher Pedro Martínez ($150,000 with the San Diego Padres) and shortstop Jimmy De los Santos ($100,000 with the Atlanta Braves).

  22. mko

Well it is nice what the Yankees (and other teams) are doing for this poor kid. But how many other people with terminal illnesses do NOT get the same treatment? I don’t see how this kid is so special. Maybe his parents have good connections to baseball people or who knows how he became the dying celebrity.

    Anyway, good luck to him.

  23. Fredo Corleone

    “WWMD- What Would Manny Do?

    Knock him ?”

    Manny being Manson?

Sadly, I think Manny would have no problem carrying out a similar good deed. Thing he’d probably do different is not have his publicist release that he did the good deed to the world.

You’d think Arod would learn something from being around Jeter so long.

  24. whatever

“You’d think Arod would learn something from being around Jeter so long.”

Fredo, that’s funny. Isn’t Jeter the one that snubbed that kid from the Make a Wish Foundation? They showed that on ESPN Outside the Lines. Other Players were nice and helpful to the kid. His favorite athlete looked like he couldn’t be bothered.

yeah…there’s a lot to learn there

  25. Coach Jay23

MKO, he is from PENN, and got to go to a Pirates game and while he was there he got to meet AROD and some of the other Yankees because they were in town. No one had connections at all it was a good job by the Pirates organization to help out a local kid and an even better job by AROD to open up his personal life. The young teen and his dad had tickets already to a Yankee game and when the YANKEES PR guy found out and AROD found out they went outta there way. Be happy for the kid with cancer and wish him well

  26. Frank Discussion

Class act by AROD and the Yankees organization. I’m 42 years old and I’d love to catch a ride with Alex to a game.

  27. bigjf

You think A-Rod sent his private jet to fly them out rather than let them fly commercial? That would be impressive. Still, good stuff by A-Rod and the Yanks. I remember this kid from the Pittsburgh series. The Yanks have really treated him well.

  28. The RingMaster

I think ARod’s new gal Madonna made him do it, because she’s all about “nice gestures”
