Tabata to DL; Karstens makes his bid

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 03, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Received an e-mail from our pal Mike Ashmore of the Thunder Thoughts blog. He reports that Jose Tabata is on the DL with a hamstring strain and is headed down to Tampa to rehab.

It has been a tough season for Tabata (.248/.320/.310) in Trenton for assorted reasons. The injury is not said to be serious, however.

Meanwhile, Chad Jennings reports from Scranton that Jeff Karstens is dealing.

Karstens is 3-1, 2.03 in his last five starts. Opponents have hit .189 against him. He outpitched Brett Myers tonight, going seven strong innings for Scranton. Sir Sidney will probably get another start, but Karstens is knock, knock, knocking on the door.

Dang, not a year Tabata’s going to want to remember.

You know for all the people who want to get this team younger. Can these guys stay healthy.I mean isn’t the point of getting younger is to get healthy.

A bunch of Carl Pavanos in our system. And are we really gonna ask for Jeff Karstens.Another Rasner.

I don’t think we can trade we all these HIghh Risk High Ceiling players.

  3. Brandon (Jose Tabata stays) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) July 3rd, 2008 at 1:27 am

It’s not a serious injury ! Tabata basically had cramps they sent him down to get some work done at the complex, probably a 7 day thing.

I got a feeling Tabata is another in a long line of overrated Yankee prospects.

I’m hoping Gardner and AJ break that.

If Karstens keeps pitching this well he deserves a shot…you never know who the hero’s going to be…

Who would’ve thought we’d get 10 wins out of Aaron Small for example?

    A 19 yr. old overrated really ?

Karstens? Gulp. He’s slightly below Hawkins on my trust scale.

  8. GreenBeret7 July 3rd, 2008 at 1:36 am

Karstens is too good for AAA and so far, although he’s gritty, he hasn’t shown to be good enough for the Majors.

As Brandon knows well, love is a Tabata field.

  10. Joe Mama July 3rd, 2008 at 1:38 am

If he keeps pitching well he deserves a shot. Anyone who tries to pitch on a broken leg is OK in my book. I hope he gets his chance

    Moboy aka McLovin,

Tabata is the youngest or second youngest player in that league. Austin Jackson who is also young for the league is 2 years older than Tabata.

    Patience is a virtue.

  12. MoBoy(aka McLovin) July 3rd, 2008 at 2:06 am

    raymagnetic-

Of course. But J.B. Cox,Melchon,HUmberto Sanchez are rehabbing from Tommy John. And look at Hughes,Kennedy and Horne.Thats alot of Pitchers all at the same time.

Patience is a virtue. But we also need insurance to at least win now this is still a $200 million team. And since our pitchers are hurt we can’t even rely on them.

We need a pitcher we can’t rely on Joba and force him to save this team with 100 pitches in 3 innings every start.

moboy u r kidding about joba right, 3 innings!? he has pitched great so far you people get so overhyped over one game out of 162

Who said Joba will go 100 pitches in 3 innings every start?

Brabdon -I saw your question about De La Rosa in the last string. SJ commented that it was due to rotation injuries – also promos of McAllister and Stephens to Tampa. He’s likely to remain in the mix for a bit as Betances rehab is continuing (Monday 2+ poor innings in GC) and now Olbrychowski hit the DL. In fact The ‘Dogs need another starter beyond DLR unless Betes comes up on Friday on short rest.

Personally I think it’s time they also swapped Lance Pendleton with Ivan Nova in Tampa. Gotta push Pendleton who’s been very good up to his last outing and at 24 is just too old for his level (due to past injuries), and Nova’s just been very inconsistent. But perhaps keeping him under a watchful eye in Tampa is good too.

Karstens is knock knock knocking on the door to the restroom in the Scranton clubhouse.

He’s got minor league stuff. Nobody has the guts to tell it to him though because he’s a hero for taking a liner off his knee.

Also, there hasn’t been a better time to move Melancon up to AAA. 13 pitchers in Trenton, and he’s had 5 days off. Plenty of roster spaces in AAA, and only 6 in the pen vs 8 in AA. Kennedy and Igawa starts are scheduled next. Igawa on 3 days rest after a 3 inning relief stint. IPK, in his first AAA start since starting his rehab assignment, hasn’t gone past 5 yet so he’ll still have a pitch count.

people leave Arod alone he is a baseball player not your family member. let him and his wife have a life.. if they seperate or not it is there business not ours…

Tabata is 19, gie him some time….progress is never straight up unless you are al kaline…..

  20. Jorge Steinbrenner July 3rd, 2008 at 7:53 am

….and i’m going to have to start my daily neck exercises in order to avoid whiplash from all the fly balls Karstens gives up.

i’m willing to give Tabata time, but this has NOT been a good year for him.

  21. Alan July 3rd, 2008 at 8:13 am

It’s the same old question with Karstens. How long will he be healthy ?

  22. Number 27 July 3rd, 2008 at 8:57 am

if karstens is knock knock knocking, does that mean that Ponson is heaven’s door?

  23. bigjf July 3rd, 2008 at 10:19 am

Rasner better hear that knocking too.

Hurry up and get Karstens up to the bigs so that he can stink it up and get sent back down or to the DL ala Chris Snyder.

By then maybe they’ll be ready to call up the greatness that is Alfedo Aceves!

  24. Drive 4-5 July 3rd, 2008 at 11:09 am

Words can’t describe how unimpressed I am with the news we may see Jeff Karstens.
