The Yankees talk it over – for a long time

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 03, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

For at least the fourth time already this season, the Yankees held a team meeting after a bad loss.

This one was was a doozy as Joe Girardi didn’t emerge from the clubhouse until 34 minutes after the game. He even threw the clubbies and security people out before his talk.

The first three meetings didn’t change much, time will tell whether this one does. Girardi was very emotional afterward but didn’t say anything specific about what he wants to see changed.

The Yankees have reacted well to steady, no-panic leadership in the past. Whether this approach works remains to be seen. You can sometimes scare a young team into winning. Old teams have heard it all before.

More on the meeting – including Girardi’s postgame press conference – later on.

It’d be nice to see someone screaming at Girardi for the boneheaded moves he’s made lately.

  2. rackem July 3rd, 2008 at 11:20 pm

Rough game tonight. At least the bullpen looked good

  3. YanksAngel July 3rd, 2008 at 11:21 pm

Let’s hope something fires them up

  4. Eugie July 3rd, 2008 at 11:21 pm

    press included.

  5. Fredo Corleone July 3rd, 2008 at 11:21 pm

Never see these things as having much of an effect, especially with a veteran squad. Doubt he’s offering much the guys don’t know already.

  7. sunny615 July 3rd, 2008 at 11:23 pm

    my bet is nothing happens.

  8. Old Goat July 3rd, 2008 at 11:23 pm

Maybe the team gave some back to him about his moves. I’d say that would get him fired up too.

THE SEASON IS OVER!!! TIME FOR JETER TO GO HOME.

  10. Someone Else July 3rd, 2008 at 11:26 pm

    Translation of Pete’s post:

    “Girardi’s not Torre.”

  11. rleandry July 3rd, 2008 at 11:27 pm

Maybe instead of screaming at them joe….you should sit the double play machine, jeter, for a game or two. that would get peoples attention.

  12. mark - HANK STEINBRENNER IS THE MAN July 3rd, 2008 at 11:28 pm

Pete you’re wrong or your memory isn’t real good. Joe Torre was furious with his team on more than one occasion. In St. Louis he was so mad he couldn’t even talk to the press. The team responded.

In fairness to Girardi the steady calm approach he showed to now didn’t have any effect in stopping the sloppy play or sleepwalking. That kind of play is almost disrespectful to him and the slack he has been cutting them. They needed the same kick in the ass that Ozzie Guillen’s veterans in Chicago needed and Jim Leyland’s veterans in Detroit needed. It worked on both of them.

Time will tell if it has any effect. I’m voting that it will.

  13. Jorge Steinbrenner July 3rd, 2008 at 11:28 pm

  18. RhapsodyInBlue July 3rd, 2008 at 11:31 pm

yeah it’s all Girardi’s fault, Jeter just needed a big man hug after the game.

“The Yankees have reacted well to steady, no-panic leadership in the past. Whether this approach works remains to be seen.”

So Pete – this is PANIC from Joe G.? Really?

Is this from your reporting or are you just making an inference?

When Joe G. does his McLaren impersonation in front of the cameras and has the Yankees stand in front of their lockers and explain why they are underperforming (a la Bill Bavasi) then I will accept the assessment that this is panic.

Seems to me it is just different than Joe Torre – which should come as no surprise b/c Girardi is admittedly more emotionally demonstrative to his players.

I do agree that we will see what happens – I just think that equating a post-loss meeting with panic seems unfair. But you might have more info than you are sharing.

  20. george July 3rd, 2008 at 11:33 pm

it’s quite an assumption that the meeting was to “scare” the team into winning. i would tend to think that it was a bit more substantial than that.

anyway, Torre gave out tongue-lashings. he even b-slapped the media for being too pushy the first year; he got into it w/Michael Kay over something. such stereotyping distorts both Girardi & Torre.

  21. RhapsodyInBlue July 3rd, 2008 at 11:34 pm

  26. Dan July 3rd, 2008 at 11:39 pm

It’s not about, “team chemistry.” Sometimes that can be a factor, but I really don’t see that here. I don’t see team meetings doing much to improve the overall performance of the team. To me it’s more about the lack of execution on the field, especially at this juncture, at the plate. Yankees have actually been pretty effective hitting lefty pitching this year, and they get dismantled by Lester. They have to come out strong tomorrow.

Personnel changes in the next 24 to 48 hours is the latest according to ESPN.
First move I would expect would be LaTroy Hawkins getting DFA’d. What’s next, I don’t know.

That should get the offense going.

    Not even angry anymore.

Hard to get upset after games like this after having watched the same thing all season.

I couldn’t even be bothered watching this one tonight. Got home flicked on the game right as the score went to 4-0 and immediately turned it off. I knew what was going to happen and from looking at the final box score I was right. Didn’t feel like subjecting my self to the slow torture of watching it unfold.

The team has become stale, boring, and unwatchable.

  34. Joe Schmoe 2 July 3rd, 2008 at 11:42 pm

If there are personnel changes on the way, what do you guys think will be the moves to follow?

  35. j July 3rd, 2008 at 11:43 pm

i would expect that some triple a players would be called up. Perhaps cox?

  36. j July 3rd, 2008 at 11:44 pm

hank said today that nobody is safe and that people would be benched or sent down.

  37. mark - HANK STEINBRENNER IS THE MAN July 3rd, 2008 at 11:44 pm

a moron who just put himself on display as a screaming child for anyone with YES to see?

Well gee let me see. That would just about cover a lot of major league managers who have done worse than tell a member of the press to kiss his ass. Screaming child? Funny I didn’t hear Girardi scream. Did you? Of course you didn’t.

    Who’s the moron?

Try watching tapes of Piniella on the field. Or Ozzie Guillen. Or Bobby Cox. Then tell us about screaming children. And oh yeah. St. Joe Torre reaming the press.

  38. Dan July 3rd, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Yeah I mean Latroy getting DFA’d was a long time coming but to say that move is a bandaid on a gunshot wound is not even enough to describe it. They aren’t hitting. Also, their starting pitching depth is sad…injury is to blame for that, but still, they have to persevere if they want to win.

  40. Bob(the original) July 3rd, 2008 at 11:45 pm

There isn’t much that can be changed at this point.

A major overhaul is needed and will have to wait until the offseason to begin.

At least we’ll get a better draft position out of this awful season.

  41. They shoot horses don't they? July 3rd, 2008 at 11:46 pm

Sounds like we are getting ready to rearrange the deck chairs on the good ship Titanic. That’ll fix things!

  42. j July 3rd, 2008 at 11:47 pm

Are there any minor leaguers that can be called up right away?

  43. Fredo Corleone July 3rd, 2008 at 11:47 pm

“Didn’t feel like subjecting my self to the slow torture of watching it unfold.”

In fairness to the Yankees, they were considerate enough to swing at the first pitch several times, thus speeding up the torture process.

  46. stuart July 3rd, 2008 at 11:50 pm

guys Petie does not like Girardi have you figured that our yet?/

Daddy Torre was the Mayor he stroked the lazy reporters and answered all the questions while never saying anything..

the reporters don’t like Girardi he is no fun and does not stroke them…

again they have very limited trade options only addition by subtraction and they are going to stay pat, hopefully if things get bad enough they are smart enough to have a fire sale….

$$$$ is not going to save these band of overpaid unclutch multi millionaires.. They will sink or swim on there own but again maybe afraud can break a few more individual records this yr.?/It looks like he will have alot of time off by October even earlier then usual for him this yr.. Guys when you basH Melky Friday for some play remember how alex and bobby the wall abreu came thru big time today in the bottom of the 1st with some real proffessional AB’s…..

I wonder how many teams have had closed door meetings after they scored 18 runs in their previous game…

    It’s just weird…

Big difference between a AAA call up like last night and a guy who is on the cusp of being a solid #2 tonite.

  49. mark - HANK STEINBRENNER IS THE MAN July 3rd, 2008 at 11:54 pm

Dynasty a lot could have had to do with it being the Red Sox. I don’t know.

  50. stuart July 3rd, 2008 at 11:55 pm

if you think things are bad imagine if they would have done the foolish Santana trade.. they would have even less financial flexibilty but hey the would have tied up another overpaid older guy for 5 yrs..and lost about 4 or 5 prospects…

again when things get bad just think of the Mets they are as bad as the yanks and have no minor league talent and have almost as many bad contracts as the yanks….

DFA’ Hawkins would not hurt by any stretch but benching one of the big boys or trading them would really change things up.. BTW that will never ever happen but we can dream…

The yanks have very limited player personel options the good news again is $80+ mill of the books in October and then they can do what they want with 2 SP’, RF, 1B, and that is about it….

  51. DYNASTY IS DESTINY! July 3rd, 2008 at 11:56 pm

“these band of overpaid unclutch multi millionaires..”

Is that the same group that makes it to the playoffs every year?

  52. Bob(the original) July 3rd, 2008 at 11:59 pm

YAAAWWWWWWWNNNN. After 85 games, this team is what it is. No pepe talks are gonna doing anything to change it.

“He got some stuff off his chest (and said,) ‘Come tomorrow ready to play,’ ” said a person who was in the room and spoke on the condition of anonymity because the meeting was held behind closed doors. “It wasn’t a bad meeting at all. He wasn’t screaming and yelling.”

The message, the person said, was, “We’ve got to be more consistent. We’ve got to play harder. We’ve got to fight for nine innings.”

  53. G. Love July 3rd, 2008 at 11:59 pm

Here’s what I think could happen.

I think Abreu is going to be in trouble. He will either be shipped out or benched. Either Abreu or Damon will be the big name shake up move they make.

I think Gardner will be an every day player somewhere in the OF. You can tell Girardi wants that kind of weapon in the lineup.

I think Betemit is gone in a trade probably for a real backup 1b or a back of the rotation starter.

    Hawkins DFA’d.

Posada to the DL. Molina and Moeller to catch with that Closser kid in AAA ready to take one of their places.

Jeter is in danger of losing his spot in the batting order unless he’s injured which he’ll go the DL. Girardi can’t keep him in the 2 hole with him unable to lift the ball over the infield.

I think they bring up Scott Strickland for Hawkins and another young energy position player type from Scranton.

I think Jeter is going to start seeing more frequent days off if he doesn’t start to produce. I hope he’s hurt. Otherwise the guy turned 44 in a year.

If Rasner spits the bit tomorrow, he’s going down for Karstens.

  54. stuart July 3rd, 2008 at 11:59 pm

dynasty is destiny you are looking in the past.. and in the last few years they overcame there putrid pitching by just bashing teams and that is not happening this year…

I hope I am wrong but the big boys on thsi team either have no matter between the ears, no pride, or no heart or all of the above.

I know they have big wallets and big heads, pretty manicured hair, nice jewelry, but not a lot of toughness…..

  55. DYNASTY IS DESTINY! July 4th, 2008 at 12:00 am

    mark,

Yes, I agree it had to do with the fact that it was against the Red Sox…if this had been a 7-0 shutout against someone else I don’t think they would’ve had this meeting…

  56. Hellboy July 4th, 2008 at 12:00 am

I recently have lost the will to live, as the Yankees continue to tumble.

  57. RhapsodyInBlue July 4th, 2008 at 12:01 am

I think after unwinding with their concubines or letting off steam in the nightclubs, this team will come back ready to deal tomorrow.

  58. Fredo Corleone July 4th, 2008 at 12:01 am

“The message, the person said, was, “We’ve got to be more consistent. We’ve got to play harder. We’ve got to fight for nine innings.”

    Inspiring…..well, not really.

  59. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) July 4th, 2008 at 12:01 am

Here’s what people need to understand, last season it was worse but this season at this current pace can exceed it. Last yr. 4 young pitchers had to chip in why ? Because w/o the combo of them Arod/Posada and Cano/Abreu/Jetes and Damon we don’t even sniff the playoffs. The team deserves to be ripped they’ve been on cruise control all season while driving drunk.

  60. Vagitek July 4th, 2008 at 12:04 am

    Trade Jeter.

  61. Fredo Corleone July 4th, 2008 at 12:04 am

“I think Betemit is gone in a trade probably for a real backup 1b or a back of the rotation starter.”

Betemit doesn’t get you a back of the rotation starter.

  62. stuart July 4th, 2008 at 12:05 am

Glove you are in dreamland if anything they will do the easy thing dump Hawkins that is it….

yeah they are going to move king Derek down in the order!!!!!!Sorry I am laughing….They are trading people when no one wants them , not happening..

The minors have help in 1 area today and that is the pen, the only problem is our pen except for hawkins and kyle is not that bad…

they have no legit top end position talent ready today to play for the big club.. Yeah Gardner may be able to play but if they play him over Melky it will benefit them marginally at best. If they play melky and Gardner, and Hideki comes back then they can trade abreu or Damon but then this teams has a significant power shortage.. I am all for that move WTF why not but again they will never do that, Cashman(who I like) is way to cautious. he has made like 4 trades in the last 2 yrs. and all very low profile……

  63. Pepitone July 4th, 2008 at 12:07 am

Lots of Yankee fans are pretty pissed off right now and I don’t blame them. This franchise is the most successful in professional sports. We expect more from the Yankees. However, Cashman and his baseball people – stay out of it Hank and Hal – need to get together and start to make some decisions regarding the future of some of the players on this roster. I don’t know – I’m no baseball expert by any stretch – but they have to decide whether or not they can legitimately win this year with what they have, or begin to retool this roster with good young talent and hope for a brighter future. Because right now, neither the future, nor the present, is very bright.

  64. Matthew Bleiberg July 4th, 2008 at 12:08 am

Maybe I was seeing things, but I’m surprised nobody has commented on the appearance of Girardi, Posada and Damon during their postgame interviews.

Girardi’s eyes were red and teary-eyed. Posada sort of choked up a bit, and his eyes were red and he talked like he had just been crying.

Damon’s eyes were red and teary-eyed as well.

Something serious must have been said to make Jo-Po and Damon, two vets, cry.

  65. stuart July 4th, 2008 at 12:08 am

again Betemit is the problem. Not afraud or jetes or abreu but they stink because Betemit has a 287 OBP and only 12 RBI’s but if he was playing up to the level he should he would have 8 more RBI”s..

    Man get a clue…..

  66. Sean July 4th, 2008 at 12:11 am

Joel Sherman is a spineless hack. Pete knows it.

  67. Bob(the original) July 4th, 2008 at 12:12 am

Getting rid of Hawkins and Betemit….yeah that will solve everything.

    Give me a break.

There is nothing that can be done right now to change this lineup to the point it needs to be changed. Especially from a front office that I honestly belive knew they were punting this season from day one.

We’re just going to have to ride it out for the rest of the year I’m afraid. Maybe lightening will strike and these guys will start rolling, but that’s not very realistic to expect.

  68. Fire Girardi July 4th, 2008 at 12:16 am

I’d like to see Hank grow a pair and get rid of this guy.

  69. stuart July 4th, 2008 at 12:17 am

for all the patient talent eperts on thsi site i have 2 wors to say. Mike Pelfrey based on your patience and keen talent eye, you would have traded him to SIberia.. Guess what the jury is out but he may be a legit legit frint end starter..
look at his recent #’s he has bee nthere best pitcher for the last 6 weeks or more…

I thought at 24 he stunk and would never succeeed????????

Bob is right the only way they can change things is to subtract and they never will, it is not the Yankee way god forbid..

Subtract Brian why the heck not??????

  70. Kill-Schill(ing) July 4th, 2008 at 12:18 am

Hey as far as hacks go, Sherman’s isn’t THAT bad.

    The hack list.

    1) Lupica (a hack and illiterate)
    2) Vacarro (unreadable)
    3) Jonette Howard (banal)
    4) Wallace Matthews (obtuse)
    5) Heyman (steroids are the scourge of baseball; ostacise the users from humanity)

Sherman excels all of these guys. He writes readable prose, he has decent sources, and he doesn’t harbor gratuitous enmity for the Yankees and pass it off as objective commentary (re: Lupica)

I don’t always agree with him. But the organization needs someone to criticize it, as long as they’re fair about and substantiate their arguments.

  71. RhapsodyInBlue July 4th, 2008 at 12:19 am

    Fire Girardi

fire giradi is right getting rid of Giradi will give arod some balls, jeter some strentgh ,abreu some guts, giambi some speed, and cano a brain that is it.. fire girardi our troubles are over..

fire girardi another astute yankee blogger thanks for the incredible insight….

  73. Matt July 4th, 2008 at 12:20 am

    Here’s what I’d do:
-DFA Hawkins and call up Karstens. That will put Rasner on the spot and if he doesn’t do good tomorrow than Karstens gets his spot and Rasner to the pen
-Move Jeter down in the order and have Gardner as the new #2 hitter. Jeter hasn’t been producing and Gardner will give the Yankees speed at the top of the order. Whether it’s Damon/Gardner or Gardner/Damon, just do it.
-Trade for CC Sabathia and sign him to a long year deal in the offseason. I forgot where I found this, but look at our farm system. If we trade Horne, Marquez, Tabata, and someone else for Sabathia than do it. We’d still have Humberto Sanchez, Dellin Betances, Jairo Heredia, Arodys Vizcaino, Andrew Brackman, Gerrit Cole (assuming he signs), Ryan Pope, Daniel McCutchen, George Kontos, Ohlendorf, Steve White, Phil Coke, Aceves, McCalister, Kennedy, Hughes, etc. And that’s just pitching.

  74. Fire Girardi July 4th, 2008 at 12:22 am

    “Fire Girardi

You care about being wrong. I care about winning.

  75. stuart July 4th, 2008 at 12:25 am

Matt how many times do you have to be told NEVER sign a starter to a crazy outrageous long term deal…

remember these names; pavano, zito, brown, santana, schmidt, burnett, hudson, millwood, and on and on and on.. If you cannot develop you own stud starters you are SCREWED AND WILL REGRET THE CONTRACT FOR YRS…….

    WHy can’t you understand this????????

I think after unwinding with their concubines or letting off steam in the nightclubs, this team will come back ready to deal tomorrow.

You know I really think you’re right. If they show up tomorrow like night of the living dead I will have to really believe there is no hope for this team.

Jeter seemed almost a little defensive when Kim Jones interviewed him saying they knew they hadn’t been playing well for a while and knew what they had to do.

Sad to say he has been a big part of the problem. I want to think he’s hurt because it will really hurt to think that Jeter is over the hill. But he has been consistently not real good. In fact awful. In the field and at the plate.

  77. DYNASTY IS DESTINY! July 4th, 2008 at 12:26 am

    And his replacement would be?

  78. RhapsodyInBlue July 4th, 2008 at 12:27 am

    Fire Girardi

You care about winning??? How about 4 hits tonight? Jeter’s error? That’s Girardi’s fault?

Sandy Koufax at the top of his game could have pitched for the yankees tonight and they still would have lost.

  79. G. Love July 4th, 2008 at 12:27 am

    I’m not in dreamland.

Abreu has real trade value to many teams. The Yankees will probably have to eat some salary, but if they can get back something better than the draft picks he would give them after the season they would do it.

Although I think if they offer Abreu arbitration to get the draft picks after the season, he might end up taking it and they’re stuck with him.

As for Jeter, they will not continue to put him at the top of the order if he doesn’t produce. They had to move Mattingly from the 3 hole once upon a time. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Jeter gets dropped in the order if his inability to lift the ball continues.

If he’s injured, he needs to sit.

And Betemit has value. He’s not going to get you anyone top flight, but he can bring back something decent. He has legit power and he’s still young and cheap and some team out there would like to take a chance on him as a corner. If you haven’t noticed, the Yankees are currently seduced by his power. That’s why he’s in there.

There’s going to be a shake up move coming. It will be more than Hawkins.

It could very well be we trade for someone and create more competition for the everyday jobs.

They’re going to do something. The organization doesn’t think the team that scored 18 runs last night is the real team. They know better by now.

  80. MoBoy(aka McLovin) July 4th, 2008 at 12:27 am

Cash needs a trade. It’s good to talk about the future. But you need free agents. The late 90′s dynasty had good farm hands(Jeter,Rivera,Wiliams and Posada) but they had free agents too(Stanton,Cone,Wells and O”Neil) that helped them win.

THe problem is we are relying on bad free agents(LaTroy,FRansworth,Ponson and Kei Igawa) and bad farm hands(Melky,Duncan,Rasner,Ohlendorf and Ramirez).

Lets get young with Joba,Hughes and Jackson but we need a free agent or trade.

  81. Matt July 4th, 2008 at 12:28 am

Stuart, ok than not a long, Zito-esque deal. Why not a 4-5 yr deal worth 75-90 mil?

  82. Fire Girardi July 4th, 2008 at 12:28 am

    Fire Girardi?

    And his replacement would be?

    Tony Pena applied, try him.

  83. TKinDC July 4th, 2008 at 12:29 am

“You care about being wrong. I care about winning.”

And your replacement for Joe Girardi is . . . ?

  84. stuart July 4th, 2008 at 12:29 am

lets add to that list of failed FA starters; washburn, suppan, lilly, hampton, jennings, matsuzaka, the boston stiff kind like pavano, the starter on seattle that use to be on AZ when they beat the yanks, thee moves never work out..

if you want to trade 4 prospects for a younger stud pitcher that is an option but you will need to give up mulitple prospects……

  85. Fire Girardi July 4th, 2008 at 12:30 am

    Fire Girardi

You care about winning??? How about 4 hits tonight? Jeter’s error? That’s Girardi’s fault?

Sandy Koufax at the top of his game could have pitched for the yankees tonight and they still would have lost.

I’m sorry that you’ve only watched tonights game this season.

  86. RhapsodyInBlue July 4th, 2008 at 12:30 am

yeah we should fire Giradi replace him with Tony Pena and what would that change?

  87. TKinDC July 4th, 2008 at 12:30 am

    “Tony Pena applied, try him.”

Oh yeah – just b/c Kansas City fired him means he’ll do great here.

    IDIOT

  88. Nick in SF July 4th, 2008 at 12:31 am

Does Jeter have any options left?

  89. stuart July 4th, 2008 at 12:31 am

Matt 4 or 5 yrs is fine but Sabathia will never accept it… therefore it is dreamland…..

repeat after me FA pitching signings NEVEr work out….Say it over and over…SHilling to Boston was a fleecing of AZ, beckett was a trade he was like 25, haren is 27 and they gave up a ton and he has a few yrs left on his contract…

THEY NEVER WORK OUT, THE KEY WORD IS NEVER…

  90. RhapsodyInBlue July 4th, 2008 at 12:32 am

    Fire Girardi

I’ve been a Yankee fan for 56 years, i can’t remember the last game I missed.

You’re an idiot if you think anything would change replacing Giradi with Pena.

  91. stuart July 4th, 2008 at 12:33 am

the blogger fire giradi is the classic blogger fool who has no answers except SPEND SPEND SPEND SIGN SIGN SIGN.

HE DOES not understand this one key word team, he is deluded by the word stats, classic no nothing fan…

  92. Matt July 4th, 2008 at 12:34 am

Ok Stuart, than what do you suggest we do? Trade for CC as a rental? Go for a lower-tier pitcher? Go within the organization and probably rush someone like we did last yr with Hughes, Wright, Clippard, etc?

  93. Fire Girardi July 4th, 2008 at 12:36 am

    ““Tony Pena applied, try him.”

Oh yeah – just b/c Kansas City fired him means he’ll do great here.

    IDIOT”

I never said he’d do great here. You wanted an immediate solution, you got one.

At least he has some experience.

  94. Pepitone July 4th, 2008 at 12:37 am

“Sandy Koufax at the top of his game could have pitched for the yankees tonight and they still would have lost.”

No, I saw Koufax pitch, the Yankees would have won the game in the bottom of the 10th,
    1 – 0. Koufax, of course, pitching a 2 hit complete game.

  95. Fire Girardi July 4th, 2008 at 12:38 am

“the blogger fire giradi is the classic blogger fool who has no answers except SPEND SPEND SPEND SIGN SIGN SIGN.

All you seem to do is WHINE WHINE WHINE about everyone else’s opinions and offer none of your own.

  96. pat July 4th, 2008 at 12:40 am

From what I’m reading, the message to the team was come tomorrow ready to play because if you don’t, you might not be here to see August 1.

  97. Pepitone July 4th, 2008 at 12:41 am

“epeat after me FA pitching signings NEVEr work out….Say it over and over…SHilling to Boston was a fleecing of AZ, beckett was a trade he was like 25, haren is 27 and they gave up a ton and he has a few yrs left on his contract…

Stuart, didn’t Az. sign both Shilling and Johnson before they won the WS in 2001? Or, was it a trade? Anyway, that worked out pretty well don’t you think?

  98. Pepitone July 4th, 2008 at 12:44 am

    Hey, RhapsodyinBlue-

I’ve been a Yankee fan for 44 years, good to see another old guy around this place : ) !

So, who do you think Girardi is most like, Johnny Keane, or Ralph Houck?

  99. Nick in SF July 4th, 2008 at 12:46 am

Donna, I feel ok about it. Jeter having fun doesn’t actually make my life any worse.

  100. randyhater July 4th, 2008 at 12:46 am

I like Joel Sherman. He’s a mouthy little pencil-neck but he rarely takes cheap shots, doesn’t seem to hold grudges and will admit when he’s wrong.

Unlikely to happen with his no-trade, but I’d love to see Abreu shown the door. To me he’s emblematic of everything that’s wrong with the team: overpaid, indifferent, unclutch, underachiever living off past glory and happy enough cashing his checks and playing out the string. Notice the way the Phils took off when they unloaded him.

Unfortunately all we’ll probably get is Hawkins, who I think they’ve been holding onto for just such an occaison.

  101. S.A.- No pain..no gain! Can we score a run? July 4th, 2008 at 12:46 am

So…I should have lotsa vodka ready for the game later today….
    Fun fun fun

Happy Birthday Mr. Steinbrenner. 78 years young today

  102. RhapsodyInBlue July 4th, 2008 at 12:47 am

    Pepitone

I like what I see in Girardi, he is smart, fair, tough and has true passion, all he needs are young hungry athletic players and time.

  103. Waiting for the stew July 4th, 2008 at 12:48 am

    Stuart,

Waiting on your plan sir. You must have one

  104. RhapsodyInBlue July 4th, 2008 at 12:49 am

    BTW

I see Girardi as more in the vein of a sober Billy Martin.

  105. David Robertson for Setup July 4th, 2008 at 12:49 am

We ARE going to win today. Stay confident. 12-5 is my assumption. I have been spot on with my guesses lately.

  106. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) July 4th, 2008 at 12:50 am

The options Jeter has left are Minka Kelly or Gabrielle Union.

    Stinks to be you, eh?

That’s ok he can use Jete’s 2 new 2008 Cologne Editions

4-6-3 and 6-4-3 I heard they work wonders for players.

  107. Pepitone July 4th, 2008 at 12:53 am

    RhapsodyinBlue-

I agree, I was all for his hiring. Hated to see Torre go, but it was probably time. Girardi brings a toughness that I think has been missing around here.

  108. Fire Girardi July 4th, 2008 at 12:54 am

“I like what I see in Girardi, he is smart, fair, tough and has true passion, all he needs are young hungry athletic players and time.”

Like the Florida Marlins. Where he wasn’t even a .500 manager. And where he eventually blew out one of their young pitchers arms. Great!

  109. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) July 4th, 2008 at 12:55 am

    Buster Olney expects moves

  110. Pepitone July 4th, 2008 at 12:56 am

    RhapsodyinBlue-

LOL! Kind of like the difference between Bob Lemon (Joe Torre) and Billy Martin (Joe Girardi).

  111. RhapsodyInBlue July 4th, 2008 at 12:57 am

I loved Torre too, felt he should have hung around another year.

I see Girardi as a potential great manager, he has a great mind, a young Earl Weaver.

You can see how this team’s malaise is eating away at him.

I believe this year will be tough on all of us, but this is the bottom imo.

  112. Kevin July 4th, 2008 at 12:58 am

“Sounds like we are getting ready to rearrange the deck chairs on the good ship Titanic. That’ll fix things!”

That’s the best thing I’ve read through this whole post. Describes it perfectly.

Everyone is acting as if we have a savior in AAA, or as if we are going to make a big move. It is not going to happen. Wilson Betemit is not the problem, if he was what team would deal a decent starter for him? Get real people. This team is what it is, Jeter is not being moved down in the lineup, Gardner is not a ROTY in waiting, Melky is our CF. This team is either going to make the playoffs as is or will finish under .500. There is no savior coming.

The only roster move in the immediate future is a Hawkins for Strickland swap. JB Cox is not going to come in and save the pen, you guys say Rasner has nothing and can’t break 90, Cox throws just as hard and can’t even strike anyone out in AAA. He may be useful in the future but he is not ready.

The only other possibility is making a spot for Karstens, which will only happen if Ponson or Rasner let’s it. That remains to be seen.

I honestly don’t think the pitching has been that bad this year, considering we have lost Wang, Hughes, and Kennedy to big chunks of injuries. As a matter of fact, I think our bullpen is better then it has been in years. We have lost because we can’t get clutch hits and drive in the men we put on base.

That said, we have dug a gigantic hole considering what lies ahead of us, just because we did it last year doesn’t mean we can do it again.

  113. RhapsodyInBlue July 4th, 2008 at 1:01 am

    fire girardi

He was the NL Mgr of the year, yes?

Even if he was a total fool any owner with a half of a brain would at least let him finish the year out.

Your plan is a bit drastic I’d say, and won’t happen.

  114. Fire Girardi July 4th, 2008 at 1:06 am

That’s what we’re playing for… Manager of the Year.

  115. RhapsodyInBlue July 4th, 2008 at 1:12 am

    fire girardi

    Look sonny
I know you liked Torre, but he’s gone, you’re get over it.

Girardi’s not getting fired, get over that too.

  116. Pepitone July 4th, 2008 at 1:12 am

    RhapsodyinBlue-

Most of these guys have no idea what real losing is like. Remember 1966? For me, that year was like a death in the family. All the guys were getting old at once, and there was no replacements coming from the farm, unless you consider Horace Clark a “blue-chipper.”

  117. Matt July 4th, 2008 at 1:14 am

Does anyone see the Yankees going for offense and signing Bonds?

  118. Pepitone July 4th, 2008 at 1:16 am

“Does anyone see the Yankees going for offense and signing Bonds?”

I have my hand raised. NO!

  119. RhapsodyInBlue July 4th, 2008 at 1:19 am

1966 was very sad, the series against the Dodgers and then the Cards was begining of the end, then to CBS ownership where terrible years. Which reminds me.

    Happy Birthday Mr. Steinbrenner.

  120. RhapsodyInBlue July 4th, 2008 at 1:19 am

    No to Bonds.

  121. Matt July 4th, 2008 at 1:21 am

Only reason I say Bonds is because of the lack of offense. Bonds would be the DH and Giambi the 1B. Even Pete is surprised at Giambi’s defense. Our lineup could be: Damon, Abreu, A-Rod, Bonds, Giambi, Posada, Jeter, Cano, Melky/Gardner. Bonds will get us offense, obp, slugging, and protection.

I wouldn’t be too keane on it either but if we need power, Bonds might be the temporary solution.

  122. ellen July 4th, 2008 at 1:26 am

I just got home – was there a post-game interview with Girardi after the meeting?

  123. Hank July 4th, 2008 at 5:31 am

    Ellen-

yeah, turn on sportscenter. They’re replaying it every hour.

  124. bru July 4th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

they need to trade for an ace or two, wang will go to number two, joba 3.it is time now, trade kennedy, melky, tabata, horne for sabathia.as long as they keep brackman, montero.they are falling to far behind.they need 2 aces like sabathia, weeks and in 2009 they can have sabathia, wang, weeks, joba, hughes.get rid of all these dead weight prospects, they have no spot.all the money should have been spent on pitching instead of position players.you need 3 great pitchers an excellent 4th and a decent 5th and the yankees aren’t even close, very disheartening.i am not saying trade everyone but they have way to many prospects that will lose their value soon.it doesn’t matter how you get you’re 5 starters as long as they are good.know when to hold and know when to fold.
