Damon out at least two games, likely more

July
4

Johnny Damon hopes to be ready to play against Tampa Bay on Tuesday but admitted that his injured right shoulder could require more time off. It is possible he could be headed for the disabled list for the first time in his career.

“I’m not sure how long these type of injuries last,” Damon said. “It definitely doesn’t feel good. I can’t move it too well.”

Said Damon a few minutes later: “Now the world gets to go out and see what Brett Gardner can to. I’m sure they’re going to like what they see.”

A few notes: It appears Justin Christian could be here tomorrow. … The Yankees signed two Venezuelan prospects: catcher Jackson Valera and outfielder Ramon Flores. … Humberto Sanchez pitched another inning in the GCL, striking out the side. … Tampa Bay is up 7-1 in the eighth inning. If the Rays hold on, the Yankees will be out nine games in the division with 75 games to play.

what else is new in this train wreck of a season? aside from missing out on the playoffs they don’t even get a chance to try out and develop Kennedy and Hughes. Alan Horne’s window is probably closed as he’s hurt, there goes his trade value. And now even if the Yankees wanted to sell off some of these vets like Damon, they can’t even do that since he’s hurt now which puts his trade value in the toilet, much like this season.

and what really galls me is that aside from two clowns in the bullpen (hawkins and farnsworth) the Yankees finally have a decent bullpen for once.

how much more shuttling of the Alberto Gonzalez, Justin Christian, Chris Britton and whoever else, must we endure before Cashman finally admits his mistake and cuts the chord on Hawkins. The fact that Hawkins has stuck around this long, as bad as he is, kills me worse than this offense. Another of Cashman’s shrewd pitching moves to go along with Kei Igawa, Jaret Wright, and Carl Pavano. Great job!!

  2. tim boat

What’s even more comical, as bad as Hawkins has been I bet he’s had just as many 1-2-3 innings as Farnsworth (Cashman’s other great pitching acquisition)

  3. Barry Lane

This team will be a buyer, nota seller. The aura exuded by New York did not evolve out of defeatism. They may not succeed in salvaging the season, but from an historical and organizational point of view, it will not be from lack of will.

  4. JoeT 28 in 09!!

Don’t worry Tim – you won’t have to worry about Cashman’s mistakes after this season, they’ll go out the door with him

  5. Guiseppe Franco

Cashman is not going to be fired. He will be back next season unless he decides to leave on his own.

The Steinbrenners have already hinted many times that they want him back.

It’s so stupid that Yankee fans are so moronic that one potential missed postseason should result in someone getting fired.

Some people really have no understanding of this game at all.

  6. Old Goat

At this point, it sure doesn’t look like the Yankees will be turning things around. Johnny Damon will probably hit the DL. At most he will only be able to DH, and even that will be questionable with that shoulder.

Matsui is out. Jorge should be out. Wang is out. Hughes is out. Damon is probably out. Bruney is out. Rasner really isn’t a starter. Giese isn’t a starter. Hawkins can only pitch in non-pressure situations, like when the Yankees are already losing the game.

I just don’t see where there is enough left of the team to do much. That isn’t even getting into the lack of hitting from those who are on the field.

At this point they really don’t have much to plug the holes.

If they are bringing up Christian, what move will be made to make room for him? I wouldn’t be surprised if Johnny Damon gets his first official stint on the DL. Last year he should have been on it.

I think the Yankees will end up having to sell at this point. There are too many broken pieces and too many needs for them to do much. Sad way to close out Yankee Stadium.

  7. Rodney

We need a Bay/Nady/Holliday type in LF.

  8. VOIII

While I applaud Cashman’s commitment to the farm system, I think his choice of ignoring the Major League Club this year should get him a first class ticket out of NY. All the vaunted propects are falling fast, either to injury or poor performances. Someone should look into the Organizations medical staff and conditioning program. The injury epidemic has hit the entire organization hard the last couple of seasons. It can’t all be bad luck…can it?

  9. Someone Else

“Some people really have no understanding of this game at all.”

    Like 95% of Yankees’ fans.

Hawkins is not one of Cashman’s ‘failures’. If Hawkins had a Linebrink type deal? Yeah, sure. He was a 1 year contract, not too expensive at that, coming off a good season – if he has a good season, you get a draft pick for him. And who, exactly, is knocking the door down to get to the majors that he’s blocking?

  10. Guiseppe Franco

Like SJ on the earlier post, I’d like to see the team broken up as well – but the problem with that is the team can’t be dismantled all at once.

Let Abreu walk (as I’ve said a thousand times on this board since the offseason) and Giambi as well after the season is over.

Moose will probably be gone but I’d re-sign Pettitte for one more season.

Farnsworth and Hawkins will be gone and there are several young arms to replace them (Melancon, Cox, Robertson, etc.).

There’s only so much you can do with this team right now, especially with position players. They really can’t be “sellers” at the deadline because teams in contention don’t want what they’re selling.

Damon will be back next season as well as Matsui, so they’ll have to wait until after 2009 until their contracts come off the books.

The problem with a lot of Yankee fans is that they are going to want this team to spend a boatload of money on FAs this offseason when that’s exactly the wrong thing to do.

The whole $200M payroll thing has become such a cliche and those days are coming to an end. The payroll will probably be much closer to the $160-170M range next season.

It’s fine to sign a couple of stopgaps to replace a few of these guys, but the ultimate goal is to keep developing the kids in the minors. But the problem with that is there are no position players ready yet until Jackson in 2010.

Well, that’s what happens when you neglect the farm for so many years before Oppenheimer took control of the draft in 2005. It’s not going to happen overnight, but long term, the Yanks’ minor league system should be in good shape.

The Boss has done a lot of good for this team over the years but that was perhaps his biggest blunder of all – neglecting the farm and player development and relying on quick fixes and FA signings for several years.

Unfortunately, the team is paying for that mistake bigtime right now.

  11. Someone Else

Need a lot more than that.

Cashman ‘ignored the major league club’? What, exactly, should he have done differently?

  14. yankee2123

Bad luck this year. Losing Wang was the icing on the cake.

  15. Eric

This season really has been a train wreck. I don’t see any way the Yankees make the post season this year. Their rotation is in shambles, too many injuries to key players, and age is finally catching up to the offense. It could be worse though, they could be the Mets…

  16. JoeT 28 in 09!!

Guiseppe Franco – and what has cashman done that’s been productive, outside of a couple draft picks? Everyone gets the same draft picks – they did a great job this year too, 700 right handed pitchers, 1 1/2 lefty’s and what 3 position players?? he’s fielded a team with many holes a few years in a row now – and they’re the SAME HOLES!! We need a baseball person as the GM, not some intern that worked his way up – we need a GM that can field a solid team with no obvious problems

  17. Old Goat

The only real concern I have with Cashman is that he seems so afraid to make any trades now. Every prospect seems to be “protected” and “special”. Then they come up and guess what, they aren’t. At least not at this time.

Some have been rushed up too fast. I get that. There does come a point where you have to make a move to better your club. Cashman really hasn’t done much of anything lately. Too much reliance on the farm hands, and then seeing that they can’t cut it once they get here.

So many pitchers yet distinct lack of position players of any real worth. So barren that we are being told of Tabata, a 19 year old kid who is years away. And Jackson, another who is years away.

Buy or sell, it doesn’t matter. I just don’t see the Yankees picking up enough to make any kind of run. They need a top end starting pitcher. They need a good bat or three. They need far more than the farm can sustain.

  18. tim boat

Lol the Yankees aren’t getting a draft pick for Hawkins. In order for that to happen they’d need to offer him arbitration, and why would they do that since he’d most likely accept coming off the year he’s had and the fact that nobody else would seriously want him, plus arbitration would actually give him a raise! Do I even need to explain this even more?

Cashman’s worst blunder in this instance is the fact that Hawkins hasn’t been DFA’d while Scott Patterson and company toil away at Scranton.

  19. Barry Lane

    Dear Old Goat,

You may be right, but whether you are or not, your comment has heart and understanding. All fans should temper their commentaries with similar qualities.

  25. VOIII

“Cashman ‘ignored the major league club’? What, exactly, should he have done differently?”

He should have addressed the Pitching weeks ago…He should have sent Melky to SWB weeks ago…He should stop shuttling retreads in and out of the BP… He should have added a left handed relief pitcher…He should have brought in a right handed power hitter… just to start…

  26. JoeT 28 in 09!!

am i the only one who blames cashman for having TWO position players of value in the minor leagues – and they’re both years away – which means absolutely nothing, who knows what happens in the next couple of years, they could fail and never make it, they could get hurt, they can come up and be awful… Cashman hasn’t made a move to aquire a major league starting position player in how long? The last two big names both left (Johnson and Sheffield)

  27. sw

The only reason Hawkins hasn’t been DFA’ed is because he makes 3.75 million and the FO keeps having delusions they can trade him for something (baseball bats?). Cleveland just DFA’ed their 4.25 million dollar closer, so maybe that will make them realize that no one is going to take scrap pile pitching and give you something in return and just cut their losses. One can hope.

  28. McLovin

THe biggest person to blame is Cashman.

We have enough offense and thats something easy to get.But with rookies(Hughes,Kennedy and Joba) to fill in the rotation Cashman risked too much in the pitching department.

Also the Pen is only doing good because we are losing. You think Ramirez,Fransworth and LaTroy would be better in 2-1 games when we are winning.

The Yankees are a little better then they were last year. But in the steach we had Chien-Ming Wang not Ponson or Rasner.

  29. Thomo

I reveled in the greatness of the Yankees in the early 60’s; endured the likes of Dooley Womack and regained interest in the 90’s. This too shall pass folks- I hope Cashman et al. understand they must be sellers and do not mortgage the future for mid career or (worse) aging stars. One year not making the playoffs is not the end of the world – be patient – they will be back with a vengeance but it will not be this year or next.

  30. Old Goat

Thing is, keeping Hawkins to serve as mop up pitcher sends a bad a message to the players. Once he comes in the team figures Girardi gave up. Once he does, then they do.

I can’t say that I think our farm system looks all that rich. The reason why Tabata and Jackson are un-touchables is because there is no one else remotely worth even talking about. They have dozens of pitchers, many of those are recovering from injuries or surgery though.

Seeing what we have coming up it certainly seems like a house of cards, rather than a firm sound structure.

  31. Old Goat

Thomo, I it all depends on what they can sell, and even more, what they can get back.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cashman trading away a relief pitcher for a Betemit clone. Then pat himself on the back and think what a great job!.

  32. The Fallen Phoenix

What right-handed power hitter? What left-handed relief pitcher?

After one month of the season, people were saying Giambi and Damon had to go. No one is really saying that now, are they? Or, if they are, it isn’t because of how well they’ve performed thus far this season.

One of Cashman’s greatest strengths has been his ability not to make snap, panic decisions. Remember when Theo Epstein traded Bard and Meredith to get Mirabelli back after that game Bard had seven passed balls? It was a panic move, and it didn’t work too well for Boston.

If moves get made this season, they’ll be made on Cashman’s own terms, not on anyone else’s. He’s not going to get fleeced-he never really does-and he’s not necessarily going to bring in the big name, either. But he certainly won’t mortgage the future to salvage, what’s left, which is what most GMs on the last year of their contract would do; that’s another strength of Cashman’s which often gets overlooked.

Until 2005, Cashman had no power over the draft, and the quality of players in the farm system, whatsoever. In three short years, we’ve started to see what attention to amateur players provides, and while not everyone has been performing just yet, that’s to be expected.

Players do not develop in just one or two professional seasons, like we’ve seen Joba do thus far. Same goes for Kennedy: he made three excellent starts in September last year, in his first professional season. Yes, sample size caveats apply, but just because he’s proven through ten starts that he wasn’t ready for the big leagues for the first half of the season, doesn’t mean he’ll never be ready for the big leagues at all.

Most players take three or four years to develop; Jeter was drafted in 1992. He didn’t debut until 1995, and didn’t win the starting shortstop gig until 1996. That’s four years.

Again, Cashman’s first draft was in 2006, and we’ve seen it pay dividends in the minors thus far; the talent just hasn’t made it here, yet.

starting position players acquired by Brian Cashman since 2000:

    7/30/06 – Bobby Abreu

    6/6/03 – Ruben Sierra

  36. Thomo

    Old Goat,

minor changes around the margins are fine – i simply hope they understand they are going nowhere anytime soon. continue to build for the future – it takes 3-4 years from the point they find themselves in if they don’t panic and do something rash.

  37. sw

So many pitchers yet distinct lack of position players of any real worth.

It’s been previously noted by others that it’s much harder to get good position players in the draft when you are always drafting low in the first round, all the good ones are generally taken, whereas they have some shot at pitchers because they are higher risk (esp. ones with injuries or are difficult signs for low-salaried team). Not that their pitching development has been anything to write home about. They developed what, zero major league pitchers between Pettite in 1995 and Wang in 2005? Of their draft picks, I guess Eric Milton had an okay career in Minnesota, but he’s finished now, and Brandon Claussen is still kicking around the majors but nothing special. All the hype during ST about Hughes/Chamberlain/Kennedy reminded me distinctly when the Mets had Pulsipher/Isringhausen/Wilson a decade or so ago and how did that work out for them? Farm grown prospects are almost universally overhyped.

  38. Doreen

I saw the first inning today. I thought they came out with both barrels and I was so thrilled. I saw Damon get hurt. The day turned on that play. It was one more piece of bad luck, bad news, bad karma, bad whatever in a season full of it. Nothing, well, almost nothing, has gone the Yankees way this season. From the failed Hughes/Kennedy experiment and their subsequent injuries; from Jeter’s quad, ARod’s quad, Posada’s shoulder; then Jeter’s hand (which he should have taken time off for) and Wang and Britton and Matsui and now, finally, Damon. No team, I repeat, NO TEAM, can plan for that much. You can have plan A, B and even C, which I believe Cashman did. No reasonable person could have anticipated the way this season has gone. The dike is no longer pluggable.

To me, last night was a terrible loss, but today was just a sad one.

Most of the game I listened to on radio, which is not something I’ve done in a while. It’s interesting, isn’t it? Sterling is one of a kind. Ahem.

  39. Guiseppe Franco

    Here’s a question for you:

Name one GM in MLB that has never missed the postseason?

The answer is Brian Cashman. That’s it.

I don’t care how much money the Yankees spend – they cannot go another decade without missing the postseason. It just doesn’t happen.

There are too many cards stacked against them because of parity right now and The Boss himself helped create this mess because of his neglect of the farm from 1998 to 2004 and continuing his quick fix and safety net approach by signing the hottest free agent on the market or landing the big fish at the deadline.

That strategy just doesn’t work anymore. You cannot keep going to the well that often because you are eventually going to run out of water.

And by the way, Damon Oppenheimer, who was an intern who worked his way up through the Yankee hierarchy, would probably be Cashman’s successor if he did move on after this season.

As much as I think Oppenheimer would be a great GM, his value is highest as the guy who makes the final call on these draft picks. He’s been outstanding in that department. And stockpiling young arms is absolutely the smart thing to do because every team needs pitching. You can get by on good pitching and average hitting a lot easier than vise versa.

Frankly, I don’t really care who the GM is next season. But spoiled rotten Yankee fans who don’t have a clue have become mini-Steinbrenners at the drop of a hat and it’s embarrassing for the rest of us.

Missing the postseason could be a blessing in disguise for this team. Just look at the Red Sox in 2006.

Also, I was visiting my mom in Staten Island today, and was treated to the front page of the New York Daily News. I don’t get that “newpaper.” Couldn’t believe the National Enquirer-like front page on ARod. Just speechless on that one.

Trivia question: Name the GM with the most money and tools available for use?
    Brian Cashman

He marched the same team out two years in a row (one that barely made the playoffs) and expects the same, when he needed to rebuild.

He treats each prospect like they are the next great thing. They are not all going to pan out. You need to trade prospects to get players in return.

He had no back-ups for when Hughes and Kennedy failed. Rasner and Ponson are no options. Boston on the other hand had Colon, Buccholz, Wakefield, Masterson available who all are better than what the Yankees have.

And our supposed young aces? They couldn’t hold a candle to the Lincecum’s, Lester’s, Masterson(he’s better than IPK and Hughes), Volquez, Buccholz’s of the world.

With the money he is given, you would hope he could build a team to make the playoffs every year. The more telling sign is he can’t make a team that gets out of the first round.

    He needs to go.

Back to the Yankees – I was told today that I was a very intense Yankee fan, and someone said if they knew they were going to get into a serious conversation, they would have studied! I guess I can no longer have a casual discussion about the Yankees anymore, and I have ALL OF YOU to thank!!!! I thought whatever I was talking about WAS casual (or, rather, common knowledge)—I didn’t even get into what they Yankees could be expecting from the minor league teams!

  53. Guiseppe Franco

    Steve,

I guess you’ll be one of those “fans” who will be greatly disappointed next season when Cashman returns as the GM.

Damon Oppenheimer who played baseball at USC convinced the Yankee brass to draft Ian Kennedy another USC grad. Oppenheimer said Kennedy had the right stuff to pitch in New York.

Yes, let’s kill Oppenheimer too – even though the book is still out on Kennedy and he drafted Joba Chamberlain in that same draft.

    Sigh. Unreal.

  54. Good Night Yankees

ER, you are a waste of space

  55. Dee

I’m home from the game. Save for Edwar’s showing it was completely deflating. Some observations:

    – Lots of injured vets being honored today as I’m sure you all also saw on TV. But not sure if you saw that before 1st pitch, they honored a groups of vets by name. One of the guys was an amputee with a metal left leg. But when he held up his sox jersey (he did it with a big smile), the crowd greeted him with loud boos. Are you kidding me?? Booing a guy who fought and lost his leg for our country for being a Sox fan?? Was that not what he was fighting for us all for in the first place, freedom including the right to choose whatever team you want to root for? I was not proud that that happened.
    – I have no idea why Rasner was left in there so long. It’s obvious he was flirting with fire from the get go. Fine, let him settle down and avoid burning the bullpen too early, but Joe should have seen enough by the 5th. You could see that Lowell homer coming from a mile away. It could have been from anyone in the Sox lineup.
    – Beckett did not pitch well either. We let him off the hook every time he looked like he was about to hang himself after we scored in the 1st.
    – At the 7th, when it was starting to really pour down hard. We had the bases loaded, 2 out after Bobby couldn’t get it done, Alex was up, I was looking around me, people were soaking wet, many were still there, cheering at the top of their lungs. People who had umbrellas put their umbrellas aside b/c they needed their free hands to clap and cheer for Arod. They’d rather get soaked. And then Alex swung and missed and then hit right into Lugo’s gloves. I felt so sick in the stomach at that point. I’m not Blaming Alex. But rather, I felt a bit sorry for us fans.
    – Oh and the one guy who I thought was the silver lining last night who I thought showed some heart, Johnny, ended up getting injured. It sucked all around.
    – Lastly, I’ve been noticing too many of our guys just jog to 1st when they figure they can’t beat the opponents to the bag. That really get on my nerves. I’m ok with the ones that are obvious that they can’t get to on time. But many times it doesn’t look like an automatic, why don’t they at least try to run? First, aren’t you people athletes? Is it too much to ask for you to try running? Second, have you not seen guys mess up a throw or drop a catch?? I sure have seen you all do it when you play defense!! The nonchalant slow jog is symbolic to me of this team’s overall mentality. Sure they’ll try to win, but they don’t seem to try too hard. And they seem totally complacent to me.

Sorry about the rants, but the repeated disappointment this year is just a bit hard to take. I’m back to the game again tomorrow. I hope I feel better when I wake up. :-(

  60. yankee lover

Lots of things going wrong. Its got to fall to Cashman as he constructed it. Only 1 of his minor leaguers (Joba) have shown something this year. Girardi always leaves the starter in long enough to allow the game to get out of reach. Then he gets pissed at the offense because they cant keep answering. Its tough to always play from behind, always feel that when you get a lead it could be gone right away

  61. pat

I’ve found myelf in Yankee conversations also where people look at me like “how does she know that”. It’s kind of fun seeing the reaction.

  62. Guiseppe Franco

I think it is time for Girardi to leave the team. Let us get Randolph or someone else who can get these superstars to perform. joe has been a huge disappointment

Like it or not, Girardi is going to be the Yankee manager for a few years.

This isn’t the embarrassing Steinbrenner 80s. They made their decision with Girardi during the offseason so they are going to let him do his thing for awhile.

They aren’t going to drop him so soon after the way they treated Torre last season.

  63. in over his head

Hate to say it but Girardi may be in over his head, and the players know it

  64. over

Girardi may be in over his head and I think his players realize that

  65. Yankee lover

not so sure things would be much different with Torre. Its the same line up thats for sure

  66. Sawyer

Yes the book is still out on Kennedy and it’s not a very good read. He has a 0-3 record and an era over 7. He been demoted twice already and Girardi said, ‘He needs to earn his way back just like the 175 other players in the minors. “

  67. Guiseppe Franco

BTW, wasn’t Randolph’s biggest problem in the eyes Omar Minaya is that he couldn’t get “superstars” like Jose Reyes to perform?

  68. Mark Alan

Sayeth Johnny: “Now the world gets to see what Brett Gardner can do.”

Verily, Brett Gardner is “The Answer” for whom we have been waiting.

    Or was that Shawn Chacon?

Seriously, I learned last year never to call a season finished before the All Star break. Can this team do what last year’s did? Perhaps not, but they don’t have to. They have to start winning series, 2 of 3 OR 3 of 4. That and a nice winning streak will be good.

They need another starter, so if we can try Ponson, why not give Chacon another shot?

  69. YankeesTech

Typical, When the offense isn’t hitting the manager gets blamed for it. Maybe we should have Joe in these RISP situations maybe he won’t pop out like Arod and Abreu…..

  70. RhapsodyInBlue

Yeah Brilliant idea, based on Willie’s success with the Mets?

    RR
    July 4th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
I think it is time for Girardi to leave the team. Let us get Randolph or someone else who can get these superstars to perform. joe has been a huge disappointment

  71. Guiseppe Franco

    Sawyer,

Take a good look at the careers of Edinson Volquez and Roy Halladay before you bury someone after a dozen starts in the bigs.

Greg Maddux’s career didn’t start too pretty with the Cubs either.

  72. Yankee lover

I didnt see anyone blame Joe for the offense, if they did thats dumb, but you can blame Joe for confusing Rasner with Steve Carlton and leaving him in after Bosox tied the score.

  73. OldYanksFan

    Guiseppe and Phoenix,
Thank you for some intelligent posts. They are so VERY rare here. Living in New England, the first baseball blogs I checked out some years ago, were Sox blogs. I was appauled at how moronic and knee-jerk the fans were. However, it is embarassing to me that here at Lohud, it is often worse. It is a bit of a vomitorium for fans frustration and anger.

As you guys stated, what is happening NOW is a product of a maniacal owner and neglecting the farm for over a decade.

So if any of you find your teeth falling out, it ain’t because of what you did in the last year or two, but what you did over the last decade.

Very, very few competant people survice the Boss. We are lucky to have Cashman, who is dedicated to this team.

  74. bo the yankee fan

the mets lose again with santana on the mound.

  75. Yankee lover

The Swipe at Randolph about him not handling superstars like Reyes is OFF BASE- He was handling them but the Met management didnt like that Randolph was trying to make Reyes accountable. Most teams stand behind their manager when it comes to disciplining an out of control player. But then again its the Mets. They should be called the NY Devil Reyes, lets see how they handle his issue with Hernandez

  76. YankeesTech

I am glad we took out the tampa mafia that was whispering in George’s ear… Why do I have the feeling that some of those people in the tampa mafia are posting on the blog? :)

  77. S.A.- I still believe in this team, but can the offense stop being so offensive?

Not a good day for the NY Baseball teams..

  78. Wendy M

This blows. Even with the umps giving us extra outs we can’t beat these guys (1st inning Thursday, 9th inning today).

I guess the $220 million under-achievers need another speach since the first one worked so well.

  79. S.A.- I still believe in this team, but can the offense stop being so offensive?

“Tampa Bay is up 7-1 in the eighth inning. If they hold on, the Yankees will be out nine games in the division with 75 games to play.”

They held on for the win. :(
I feel like I am in bizarro world

  80. YankeeJosh

Steve said “He had no back-ups for when Hughes and Kennedy failed. Rasner and Ponson are no options. Boston on the other hand had Colon, Buccholz, Wakefield, Masterson available who all are better than what the Yankees have”

“And our supposed young aces? They couldn’t hold a candle to the Lincecum’s, Lester’s, Masterson(he’s better than IPK and Hughes), Volquez, Buccholz’s of the world.”

I’ll grant that the Sox young pitchers have pitched better than the Yankees thus far. Though Lester has had more experience. Colon isn’t anything special, only marginally better than Ponson now.

And have you seen Volquez’s stats in his first few years? He had a 14.21 ERA in 2005 and a 7.29 ERA in 2006. He finalluy piut it together this year. Just because Hughes and Kennedy have struggled this year doesn’t mean they are failures and will never be good pitchers. Looking at Hughes’ stuff and personality, I believe he’ll put it together. Kennedy is harder to say, but once he figures out how to pitch in jams, I think he’ll be a lot better too. It’s unfair to right off the kids because they had some legitimate injuries and growing pains.

  81. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Ok I went to some game at a stadium today, came back 3 hours ago wet, damped and pissed but not at what you people think. First off it’s about time the stadium actually showed the cojones to boo Derek Jeter, I’m going to make a statement that is going to upset alot of people, by far the worst player on that field today was Captain 643, he didn’t do anything until an umpire gift wrapped a single for him.

Alex for all the knocks on him drove in the only runs in this game, him and ‘Stache (who also had a ….ok game). First off I said this since I saw the matchups how the hell can you match up Darrel Rasner w/ Josh Beckett ? Even Moose would have been a better decision there. Some people got pissed off w/ Georgy, Robi it’s 50/50 because he was robbed by Coco on a lined shot, no one in the stadium thought Coco would have got that ball or the one Jacoby got to.

Unfortunately Rasner made one bad pitch, the ball traveled 340 ft., Damon I hope he’s ok he went for that ball and the minute he hit the wall, me and my friends thought he had a concussion, he bounced up threw it in 20 seconds later we look back at him holding his ribs and shoulder and the stadium took a punch in the gut. Our next big chance came in the 7th basesloaded Jetes luckily got on w/ Oki pitching and then Bobby had the most rushed AB you could see he didn’t even set himself a few timesand swang for the fences big pop up.

Alex again you can only ask for a hit there and Lugo made an outstanding play in the hole if anything that was just bad luck (atleast it wasn’t a pop up) What pissed me off is this team when they get hit they stagger, the glass chin is true they get punched back and until the last minute they aren’t aware enough to fight back.

Other than that props to Edwar Ramirez fans are starting to cheer for this guy and Veras. I could have done w/ seeing Traber who I IMO just think he is a waste of a roster spot. Today it wasn’t really about heart they came out against Beckett in the first after Damon got hurt the team took a mental blow right there. Brett had a very good final AB he battled Papelbon everything else ummm….a rain out loss would have been better.

Hey genius boy…we love it when you come and bet at Vegas!

  83. Mop-Up Man

I’m with YankeeJosh on this one. Other young pitchers like Danks and Floyd with the White Sox struggled mightily last year before finding success this year. That Hughes and Kennedy have struggled and gotten injured is not an indictment against Cashman – that’s what young pitchers do. Plus, partly because of fans like us, it’s tougher to grow up as a Yankee starter. Joba was eased in by being brought out of the pen. He’ll struggle too.

We are not really going to know the fruits of Cashman’s plan – which needed to be implemented – until next year. In the meantime, enjoy the garbage that’s on the field right now. 85 wins.

    Good Evening

I was at the stadium today for the first time this season.
I think it is about time Jason Lane got a shot.

Anyone see that Andy Phillips was picked up off waivers by the Reds, who waived him 7-10 days ago, until the Muts picked him up!

do we send traber down for christian??

  90. Bombshell

Brandon – so besides the fact that after Jeter’s no-show game last night he gets on base 3 times including 1 legitimate hit and 1 that was a tough ump call in which he hit a line drive anyway (BTW the pitch on the walk was ball 4, go and look at the replay again and remember that the ump had not given that pitch all day to anyone on the mound)...why should he get booed again? Batting .282 which is higher than Bobby, Cano, Melky, Stache, Jorge, Molina, Betemit. He deserved it last night but today he actually gave a damn and played a solid game all around. What about A-Fraud, Melky and Abreu’s unbelievably clutch performances lately?

  91. S.A.- I still believe in this team, but can the offense stop being so offensive?

Someone sure likes the caps lock key..

  92. YankeeJosh

Looking at all the suitors in the Sabathia sweepstakes, I still don’t get why the Twins rushed to trade Santana for the Mets relatively weak package.

In the heat of the season now, teams would have been knocking themselves over for Santana. With the Yanks struggling, Hal would be pushing for it, theat might get the Sox in the mix. A surprise Tampa team might want in, as would the Cubs and Dodgers. The Penant race does strange things to teams. And if the Twins were still playing well, they might have been able to make a run with him.

After tonight, I bet Santana is so thrilled he signed with the Mets. Another no decision in a Mets loss.

  93. Carmine

Off topic, but I just read in the past post about Brian Bruney and opting for rehab rather than surgery. While I foremost hope it’s the best choice for his personal health, I think this is a great thing from a teammate perspective that he chose rehabbing over surgery. As early as last year, Bruney seemed to have a bad attitude, but came in this year and looked really impressive physically and while pitching. So, it’s a major plus to the team I think that he’s shown he wants to get back as soon as he can.

  94. Joe from Long Island

I just got home from a party, and checked in here.

I salute those of you who went to the game and stayed in the rain despite Yanks being on the wrong end. As one who’s been there, done that, I salute you all.

Tomorrow my wife and I go to the Stadium. Go Moose!

  95. DFox

Um Brandon, I’m sorry you had a bad day and all, but the double that Jeter his was very well hit and Crisp had no business catching that ball. So even though it was caught, it still shouldn’t have been.

  96. Carmine

Bombshell, while Jeter’s batting average may be higher than Giambi, it’s ludicrous to say he’s been more productive. Giambi’s OBP is about 60 points higher and a slugging percentage more than 150 points higher. You can debate all the others, but Giambi’s been arguably the most offensively productive guy on the team this year.

  97. Bombshell

YankeeJosh – the Twins got spooked when Cashman pulled out of the running and Epstein began to be reluctant to trade away Bucholz and Ellsbury. They basically hit the panic button because they thought if they waited too long their chance of making a good deal would pass them by but they kinda dropped the ball on it. In the end though they are outperforming the Muts lol.

  98. Carmine

Sorry to have used the word ludicrous, I didn’t mean to sound hostile, just informing.

  99. UtilityMan

    Carmine
I saw that too,and thought the same thing.
He could have easily choose surgery, and sat back and waited for the checks to come in.

Parking was $17.00 in the garage today…I was figuring at least $25.00!!!

  100. Jorge Steinbrenner

just thinking aloud here, so excuse the potentially stupid question, but what would it take to get this LaPorta kid from Milwaukee?

boy, do we need young position players…

  101. Bombshell

Carmine – fair point yes, but I never said he was more productive than Giambi. I was just reminding people that he has the 4th highest average on the team and has been near .300 for the past month, yes he has GIDP a lot but Abreu and Cano have as well and Jeter remains over .300 in RISP avg especially with 2 outs.

  102. Fredo Corleone

“Um Brandon, I’m sorry you had a bad day and all, but the double that Jeter his was very well hit and Crisp had no business catching that ball. So even though it was caught, it still shouldn’t have been.’

No business??? Why not? Crisp made a great play. Just becaue no Yankee CF could make it doesn’t mean another team’s CF has no business making it.

  103. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Um Brandon, I’m sorry you had a bad day and all, but the double that Jeter his was very well hit and Crisp had no business catching that ball. So even though it was caught, it still shouldn’t have been.

He didn’t show up until the 9th inning and even then Crisp caught that ball just like he robbed Robi and Jacoby did the same thing, my post was about what I witnessed and what my section was thinking.

  104. Carmine

Yeah, I mean I love Jeter as much as the next guy. He’s just been mostly league average this year which is way below Jeter’s standard. I am almost certain he’ll even out by the end of the season.

  105. Tint

This calls for a team meeting!

  106. Fredo Corleone

“just thinking aloud here, so excuse the potentially stupid question, but what would it take to get this LaPorta kid from Milwaukee?”

Since the Brewers are apparently using LaPorta as the centerpiece in an offer for Sabathia, you’d have to assume the price for the Yankees would be similarly high. Yanks have an ace they can send to Milwaukee for the kid?

  107. Joe from Long Island

Jorge – I’ve wondered the same thing. The catch is, will Milwaukee deal him, or do they want him to replace Fielder? I’ve been hoping we could package enough minor league pitching to get it done, but I don’t know.

  108. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Another words if anyone here wants me to sugarcoat the captain’s performance your looking at the wrong guy !

  109. Bombshell

Jeter will be hitting .300 with a .360 OBP by August 15th, no worries Carmine, he did the same thing in 2004. People thought he was finished. Cano will also be near .285/.290 because he’s been hot lately and his swing is so much more balanced.

  110. Bombshell

I’d give them Abreu and McCutchen, Fredo. They would pull the trigger for sure.

  111. DFox

That’s exactly what I’m saying, Crisp made a great play. It was a very well hit ball, it shouldn’t be caught. Obviously the CF should try to get to any ball he can. I’m saying don’t blame Jeter because he hit a hard line drive and the CF made a diving catch. That’s like saying if someone hits a ball over the wall and gets robbed they shouldn’t have tried to hit it over the wall.

  112. Fredo Corleone

“I’d give them Abreu and McCutchen, Fredo. They would pull the trigger for sure.’

If nothing else, that offer might elicit a few chuckles from the Brewers front office.

  113. Jorge Steinbrenner

“Since the Brewers are apparently using LaPorta as the centerpiece in an offer for Sabathia, you’d have to assume the price for the Yankees would be similarly high. Yanks have an ace they can send to Milwaukee for the kid?”

That’s the answer I was afraid of. We don’t.

But, like bombshell said, would they value a veteran bat for the stretch run, plus a legit pitching prospect from our surplus just as much?

  114. Fredo Corleone

Understood Dfox. I had no problem w/ Jeter’s AB’s today. I think he saw 4 strikes in that walk he drew, but getting on three times no matter how you do it is what you want your 2 hitter doing.

  115. randyhater

Bruney chose rehab over surgery for his own purposes. If he pitches well in the second half he’ll get another guaranteed contract. If he goes under the knife and sits out, he’d go to spring training next year having to earn his supper.

Doesn’t make him a bad guy, but let’s not make a hero out of him either.

  116. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

DFox I said he didn’t show up until the 9th and the hit wasn’t even a hit, he hit it hard, probably the hardest contact he’s made since he faced Pedro in Shea other than that If you were at that game, Georgy, Jetes and Molina had terrible AB, Jetes walked vs Okijima no crap like that’s hard to do :?

  117. Fredo Corleone

“But, like bombshell said, would they value a veteran bat for the stretch run, plus a legit pitching prospect from our surplus just as much?”

No, I don’t believe they would. No room in the Brewer OF foor Abreu (Brewers have a better player in Corey Hart playing RF). Further, McCutchen is not a top flight prospect. Low end of the rotation starter at best.

  118. Bombshell

”(Brewers have a better player in Corey Hart playing RF)”

No way is Cory Hart more valuable to a youngish team contending for a playoff spot than Bobby Abreu.

  119. Good Night Yankees

We’re 10 games back of the DAMN RAYS with 75 games left on our schedule….impossible ?...definitely not !....but a super long shot with the “heart” this team shows so far this year ?....100% ! ABSOLUTELY !....This team finds new and interesting ways to lose each and every game, similar to the Chicago Cubs over the last 100 years ! This “team” is pathetic, so far. Another collection of stars that can’t put together hits with the game on the line with RISP and can’t see to get too far away from that .500 record mark, without dropping like a stone seemingly on cue. Girardi should be pissed, because he has made some REAL STUPID managing moves over these first 87 games and it is obvious that his players AS A TEAM, are playing WAY BELOW what they are capable of. If this team finishes a few games over .500 this year and like, 15 games out of first place….expect him to be a one shot deal, and deservedly so. Especially painful to watch them play like sh*t against the Red Sox, who themselves are beat up and WERE on a 5 game losing streak…AT YANKEES STADIUM ! Pete is right,,,the EFFORT means nothing….Your record is who you are,,,and 10 games back of the RAYS at this point in the season ( oh, and much disrespect to the PUNK RAYS now and forever more ) is just plain sick.

  120. 86w183

Will everyone please take a Midol?!

This has been a maddening season, complicated by a slew of injrues, but six games out of the post-season on the fourth of July is no reason to jump off a bridge.

To me Cashman’s biggest mistake was not addressing the two major weaknesses on the roster… LH relief pitching and RH hitting. I have posted on this site on both topics almost every day or so it seems. Blaming Cashman for the lack of everyday prospect in the minors is absurd. He only recently was able to bring that operation under his “umbrellla” so to speak. However it’s interesting I was ripped on this site prior to this year’s draft for insisting they focus the draft on position prospects and LH pitching since the organizationw as loaded with RH pitchers… I was right then and I with they hadn’t AGAIN used the top pick on a RH pitcher.

I do fault him for signing Hawkrap which never made any sense considering his history in Yankee Stadium… and the fact they had more RH arms available for bullpen roles than you can count.

At this point I have no interest in being a “buyer”... no reason to use assets now unless a great deal falls in your lap. But I can’t wait to see about $ 90 million come off the books and use it for guys who are under 30….

It could be worse… we could be talking about the Knicks!

  121. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

If anything Melky, Abreu or even Damon might be the first to go. I don’t see Robi going anywhere, I see Long getting fired soon, because the performance of these hitters w/ RISP and taking pitches are so inconsistant if anyone thinks CC is coming or anyone else just read this quote.

Yankees co-chairperson Hank Steinbrenner, who earlier in the week told The Associated Press the hitters have “got to start waking up,” today said he is still concerned.

The players just have to buck up,” Steinbrenner said by phone.

Asked how the Yankees can turn things around, Steinbrenner said, “I don’t know. I don’t know.

“We have to get it going, and it’s still not too late.”

And Steinbrenner indicated that a trade for a major piece would be difficult.

We’re looking into different things,” he said. “I think we all had more confidence in what we could do with what we have than what we’ve shown lately.

I don’t think there’s going to be any—for most teams in baseball, 90 percent of the teams in baseball—there’s not going to be anything major that’s going to happen (via trade).”

  122. Fredo Corleone

“No way is Cory Hart more valuable to a youngish team contending for a playoff spot than Bobby Abreu.”

Brewers aren’t trading a stud minor league position player for a half season of the coronary challenged Abreu when they have a better player in his position already. Brewers seek pitching and Sabathia is close to as good as it gets.

  123. AlbanyYankee

“To me Cashman’s biggest mistake was not addressing the two major weaknesses on the roster… LH relief pitching”

Really? Relief pitching? That is the least of the Yankees’ worries. Weak starting pitching, injuries, no timely hitting and hell, anything else, have been more of a disadvantage to the Yanks than the bullpen has been. The team is just old. The off-season will be very, very interesting this year.

  124. Good Night Yankees

Oh,...and if Girardi is the moron that says OK,,,we’ll pitch Ponson against Kazmir, instead of Andy…thus leaving the #5 starter 2 more turns before the break, instead of Andy having 2 more turns before the break…count me as a fan that will only NOT call for his firing if he wins the whole shootin’ match !

  125. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

SFG will be selling this trade deadline. I’d check on an Abreu for Rowand deal and try to get them to throw in Hinshaw, Taschner or Threets, dangle Melky if you have to.

  126. Fredo Corleone

“SFG will be selling this trade deadline. I’d check on an Abreu for Rowand deal and try to get them to throw in Hinshaw, Taschner or Threets, dangle Melky if you have to.”

    Bombshell,

I know the Twins got spooked and rushed to a trade, I just think it was really silly. The Yanks and Sox both had pitching questions, and waiting til the last minute when they’d panic seemed smarter for the Twins.

  129. hughes wang small chacons

i know it sounds crazy but….the sox changed the face of their franchise with one move, trading nomar. it might be time to part ways with jeter (i know, his contract makes him untouchable). it just might take something of that nature to get this organization back on its feet and moving forward. can we really go another decade with nothing to show for our 200 million dollar show ponies?

TO the poster who said Cashman should not be held accountable for your pitchers failures, as thats what young pitchers do, YES- agree to that, but ….hes had the $$$$ to get good solid veteran pitchers in place while these young guys develop and hes done nothing.
I have patience for “potential” young talent, but not from third place, tied with Baltimore and behind the Rays and barely over 500. If the yanks were working with the amount of payroll everyones else but Boston, and the Mets have I`d have no issues. Hes got $$$ for pitchers and he buys junk.
Right now they should be looking for two high end starters, get that, and they`ll be fine. I read about everyone complaining about the position players, be fair, its hard to get “big hits” when your starting pitching puts you in a hole early, or when you get a couple of runs they give it right back the nest inning.
In these games when he knows he starting a Rasner or ponson, he should go to the pen whenever the game is in danger and take his changes allowing each pitcher to see the batting order once through.

  134. Darwin

IDK so far it’s been former Red Soxs getting hurt, Minky now Damon… I mean who else in our system use to be a Red Sox

  140. Nick in SF

The Giants are not going to trade Aaron Rowand. They just signed him as a free agent and it wasnt to win this season. They like him a lot.

I found out the Yankee game was on the radio out here (I was unable to be home to watch). I flipped it on and the Yanks had the bases loaded with one out, down 6-3. Abreu was up with Arod on deck. I got pretty excited.

    That didn’t last long.

  141. S.A.- I still believe in this team, but can the offense stop being so offensive?

    So the Marlins/Rockies game…not exactly a pitching duel…
    More like batting practice…

  142. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

How do you get the quotes like that?

blockquote and the greater than and less than signs next to the letter m, make sure you close them w/ the side dash
    —-> /

  143. Nick in SF

Marlins/Rockies would be tied except for a missed PAT?

  144. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Nick I actually witnessed it live.

  145. Bob(The Original)

Red Sox in 06 = Yankees in 08

    Worked pretty well for them

That’s easy to say, but I don’t think it’s accurate.

Abreu and Giambi wil be gone. Who is gonna replace them though? There is no one in the organization to at this point.

Jeter/Damon/Posada will still be here and another year older. Numbers could slip even worse.

Not to even mention the rotation. Joba, Wang, ????????

Hate to say it, but I think we’ve got a few lean years ahead of us. You knew it was coming at some point after making the postseaon the past 14 years. Missing them at some point is inevitable.

Doesn’t make it any easier to deal with, but what are you gonna do? That’s sports.

  146. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

If the SP is set Juan Miranda and Edwar Gonzalez can step in next year and give you some production.

Thats why its on Cashman. All winter he said he was really concerned about trading any of the farms blue chippers, saying that they were too valuable, thats all fine and well if he can envision them contributing in 2009. at this point it looks like there isnt anyone there that will significantly contribute in 09, so therefore thats Cashmans miscue. I think based on stats from 1/2 way through this season that all the starting position players will be competitive through 09. Giambi is pulling his weight and Abreu is still ok. Damon and Matsui were there best hitters before injury. Its all about pitching, thats where the problem is. According to Cashman, hes stockpiled plenty of it at the farm, but I`m afraid he miscalculated once again.

  149. Nick in SF

Brandon, sorry you had to see that. At least you didn’t have to listen to Steve Philips on the radio. Although he made a good point, you really shouln’t call the big meeting to chew out your team the night before you face the Boston ace with Rasner pitching for the Yanks… better to wait a day.

Randy l, nice job by Livan, especially after winning the Coney Island Inning Eating contest this morning!

  151. Don Vito A. Bellamo

Nothing short of the Yankees either going on an 8 game winning streak RIGHT NOW…or winning 7 out of the last 8 games before the break is going to convince me that this TEAM, as a whole as any heart AT ALL. I fully expect for them to continue to show their glass chin, but would, of course, be overjoyed if they showed me wrong.

  152. Fredo Corleone

Oops, thought that was Sanchez’s line in SF, not Livan’s. My bad.

  153. Cain?

I think Cain would be ordinary in the AL. Big difference in the AL

  154. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    From Chad Jennings.

Justin Christian was still in the clubhouse and said he hadn’t heard anything about a potential call-up.

Everyone who follows the team knew that the pitching was going to be sketchy this season with the vets and breaking in the rookies.

All things considered the pitching as a whole has been ok.

The offense that was supposed to cover up the shortfallings of the pitching somewhat is the problem. If this offense was performing the way it should, there isn’t a doubt in my mind that we would 5-7 games better at this point easily.

I’m not worried about the pitching in the coming seasons. I’m deeply concerned about the lineup. There is nothing there in the minors to build with. Cashamn is going to have to make some deals with all these stockpiled arms at some point to bring in some young position players.

He has ALOT of work to do.

  156. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Oops, thought that was Sanchez’s line in SF, not Livan’s. My bad.

I love Jonathan Sanchez wanted that kid since the offseason rumors came out. Right now they just need to find manageable moves try to get an Alex Hinshaw a Jack Taschner or Erick Threets while the value is low. Dangle a Melky Cabrera or Eric Duncan.

A few other things look to see what Raul Ibanez status is w/ Seattle, Jorge Cantu w/ Florida, DeRosa … just some manageable moves nothing big.

  157. Bob(The Original)

Hard to believe it was only a week ago that the split DH was going on.

It’s been a long season for sure, but does anyone else just feel mentally drained after following the team the past week?

i think i have figured out livan’s secret to success.

he’s so slow it’s embarrassing to make an out against him.

hitters feel immense pressure not to look stupid.

kind of like what arod feels like when there’s a runner on third the yankees really need .

and his hitters are in such a good mood laughing at the others teams hitters swinging at slow, slower, and slowest that they’re nice and loose and get all kinds of runs for good old livan.

i do think it’s showing up hitters when he eats hot dogs on the bench between innings.

    that’s just not right.

  159. Kill-Schill(ing)

I don’t know Yankee fans how you’re doing but I’m suffering right now.

The season looks increasingly bleak and while I haven’t relinquished all hope, it’s slowly evaporating, and i don’t know how much lies left in reserve.

It’s been so long since the lean years of futility and irrelevance I’m not sure I can endure a forlorn September.

I don’t ask for a World Series every year. I only ask for competitive baseball till the last pitch in September.

10 games in the loss, 5 back in the WC, it’s hardly over yet, but the omens of a desolate September loom everywhere.

  160. Jorge Tabata

Shelly Duncan and Betemit for Eric Byrnes.

Arizona gets rid of his contract and gets some offensive punch.

We get a gamer and great clubhouse guy for the OF.

  161. Yankee lover

    To Bob the original
Its hard for the offense when the starters put them in an early hole. Its hard to always have to play catch up. When the Yanks do get a few runs early the starters give it right back. The offense is then under pressure to try to reain the lead, only to have Girardi leave the battered starter in to give the game away

  162. Yankee Trader

If the Yankees are sellers there are some possible trades that could be made that would net them proven younger players:

Colorado- Fuentes a FA lefty and lefty hitters batting .174
Matt Holiday-28 y.o righty, left fielder, with a 9.5M salary and Boras wants a long term deal which Colorado might not be able to afford. They would love to rid themselves of Helton’s 5 remaining years and were willing to absorb about half of his remaining salary. We have players with expiring contracts that Colorado might be interested in. I’m not interested in Helton.

Dodgers back in the race and need a lead off hitter since Pierre isn’t the answer. Damon, who I really like, but probably won’t be resigned after 2009 season, would be a nice fit for Torre and perhaps could bring an outfielder or pitcher like 26 y.o. lefty Hong-Chih Kuo, holding hitters to a .208 average. We would probably need to throw in a decent prospect.

Phillies need a pitcher: ?Mussina for prospects, ? struggling Brett Myers?

Angels need another bat. Any interest in Abreu for ? Chone Figgins ? Jon Garland?

Any thoughts on July deadline trades that might not only give this team a jolt, but might net proven younger players for 2009 and beyond without trying to sell the farm?

  163. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Shelly Duncan and Betemit for Eric Byrnes.

Duncan is out for the season, Byrnes is not any better

    .209/.272/.369 (PUKE)

  164. Eric Byrnes

What are you going to do with him?
this year hes hitting 209 last year he hit 286, and the year before he hit 267 all in the NL which means he`ll maybe hit 250 in the AL
oh, and in the AL before the move to the NL he hit 192 in Balt, and 266 in Oak, as a 4th outfielder on a team with average outfielders

  165. Bob(The Original)

I think there would definetly be a market for Abreu, Moose, and maybe even Giambi at the deadline.

Now as for what the Yanks could expect to get back for them? I don’t know. Just remember though how little we had to give up to get Abreu. I wouldn’t expect anything all that great in return. Still, take a chance and see if you can get lucky.

What is there to lose at this point?

Of course I guess they all have no trade clauses, so that’s another obstacle.

  166. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Phillies need a pitcher: ?Mussina for prospects, ? struggling Brett Myers?

    Why ?

Angels need another bat. Any interest in Abreu for ? Chone Figgins ? Jon Garland?

They are said to be buyers for Matt Holliday

Colorado- Fuentes a FA lefty and lefty hitters batting .174

Doesn’t address our problems and Tampa will give up more for him. I’d be shocked if we even look for this, I mean what the hell would you give for a 33 or 34 yr. old LH reliever quick fix that might not even mean much.

  167. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Dodgers back in the race and need a lead off hitter since Pierre isn’t the answer. Damon, who I really like, but probably won’t be resigned after 2009 season, would be a nice fit for Torre and perhaps could bring an outfielder or pitcher like 26 y.o. lefty Hong-Chih Kuo

    Sign me up for Kuo.

  168. Yankee Trader

    Jorge
Like Eric Byrnes but he is on DH with another hamstring pull, had bilateral hammies in May and is having an awful year, signed for two more years at 10M per.

  169. Yankee lover

Be careful of NL pitchers coming into the AL

  170. Eric Byrnes

randy l, nobody can hit Livan because he hasn’t been scouted since before the Spanish Civil War.

  172. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Be careful of NL pitchers coming into the AL

That rule has more to do w/ SP not MRP

  173. Fredo Corleone

“Any thoughts on July deadline trades that might not only give this team a jolt, but might net proven younger players for 2009 and beyond without trying to sell the farm?”

Nope. Young players are far too valuable these days. Nobody wants overpaid, mid 30-somethings in the back nine of their careers if they need to give up young talent to get it. Abreu? Damon? Those guys bring back B-list prospects.

  174. Nick in SF

Kuo would be good. Wang needs a language buddy.

  175. yankee lover

not too sure about that Brandon, we`ve had our share of MRP from the NL that did nothing here with the yanks.

  176. Yankee Trader

Brandon—Mussina will not be resigned and might welcome a trade to Philly,a contender, near his home in PA.

  177. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

not too sure about that Brandon, we`ve had our share of MRP from the NL that did nothing here with the yanks.

    Not really.

  178. yankee lover

I would give Mussina another year, since he has done ok, and we have nothing at all ready to replace him in house

  179. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Brandon –Mussina will not be resigned and might welcome a trade to Philly,a contender, near his home in PA.

Myers has pitched worse, why do you think Philly a SP starving team sent him down to the minors ?

  180. Dan

    test

  181. Fredo Corleone

“Brandon –Mussina will not be resigned and might welcome a trade to Philly,a contender, near his home in PA.”

He might at that. However, what are you getting back for a half season of a 39 year old pitcher. You aren’t getting Carrasco or Marson. Again, you’re likely working off the B-list.

  182. yankee lover

Brandon, for starters how bout Farnsworth, Hawkins, Villone, Dotel Heredia, White,

  183. Dotel?

Yep all those guys were supposed to be big time additions to the staff and all were horrible

  184. Yankee Trader

Look at the 2009 FA list of players that are under 30. Starting pitchers: Garland Oliver Perez, Sabathia, Pryor
Relievers:Juan Cruz, Brandon Lyon and F-Rod of the Angels
    Outfielders: Corey Patterson, Dunn,Baldelli
    1st-Teixeira
    2nd-Felipe Lopez
    SS-Cesar Izturis
    3B-Dallas McPherson
    C-None

Ben Sheets,30, is a FA. Do you really want to give an overweight CC or injury marred Sheets a 6 year 130M salary, and possibly have the next Mike Hampton, Barry Zito, Pedro Martinez, or possibly Santana??

Other than Brandon Lyon, who might command a reasonable salary, do you really want Teixeira a Boras client who is hitting .229 against lefties or F-Rod who wants a 5 year @15M per???

  185. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Brandon, for starters how bout Farnsworth, Hawkins, Villone, Dotel Heredia, White,

Farnsy sucked no one wanted him. Hawkins was and always has been garbage (he was acquired because he was a hit it quit it type guy), Dotel arm issues, Gabe White was crap, Felix Heredia again crap. I’m talking about guys that can pitch.

  186. Yankee Trader

Brandon, Would you trade Mussina and Melky for Shane Victorino and a prospect?

  187. Dotel?

Sorry Brandon, Farnsworth had a 1.98 in Atlanta the year before NY signed him. Hawkins had a 3.42 ERA in Col the year before NY signed him. White had a 3.93 ERA with Cincy the year before NY signed him, so remember the NL to AL exchange rate is meaningful for all NL pitchers. Those seasons Before they cameto NY are at least 2 runs lower than what they did here. I would be real careful about any NL pitchers coming into the AL East

  188. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Brandon, Would you trade Mussina and Melky for Shane Victorino and a prospect?

Why would Philly do this, I wouldn’t trade Victorino
