Most GIDPs 2007-08
Brandon Phillips 37
Derrek Lee 34
Vladimir Guerrero 33
Orlando Hudson 33
Derek Jeter 33
Carlos Lee 33
Melvin Mora 33
Delmond Young 33
Magglio Ordonez 32
These are contact hitters who like to swing the bat. They have a high number of hits too.
on the postion side, barring catastrophic injuries, it appears only miranda, lane and possibly carson have a chance of debuting in the bronx before 9/1. on the pitching side, i expect to see the following before then – aceves, cox, horne, karstens, melancon, strickland, and possibly wright. i think we all better hope for some stealth trades!
“Do it for The Boss.”
AMEN
i think its time to put the myth that jeter is mr.clutch to rest.
when was the last time he has really been super clutch?
he is declining right in front of our eyes.
hate to see it, hate to say it.
Get a win for George today..
at least Jeter is a leader is something this year.
at least jeter is a leader in something.
Well after all the brewhaha from yesterday..here is Joel Sherman’s article..
http://www.nypost.com/seven/07.....htm?page=1
So basically…this team has issues and our leader Girardi is “uptight, humorless and inflexible”
What young kids are deserving? And do you really think that AAA players, or AA players, forced onto the AL East stage, are going to be able to satisfy the demand of some fans to win the division or secure a wild card spot at the very least?
It’s very easy to say now that you will accept a lesser level of play from “deserving kids” but I somehow doubt that the reality will be satisfying at all.
The Yankees don’t have position players on the minor league level who are major league ready just yet. They don’t. It’s going to take a few more years before they do.
I know there is frustration with the way the Yankees have performed so far this season. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. It happens in baseball.
Sherman is on with Max Kellerman right now. I think the listening public is actually losing IQ points by having their radios on this morning.
Sherman is a malignant dwarf with no writing skills and no redeeming social value. 95% of the media fit this description but, he’s the worst. The Yankee players need to freeze him out of any interviews.
It’s Damon’s fault, he gets on base WAY too much and causes Jeter to GIDPs. Trade Damon immediately with someone who doesn’t get on base so much! Or maybe tell Jeter to start upper cutting his swing!
I’d like to see the stat for how they Yanks have done this year vs lefthanded starters. I bet its not pretty.
Jeter’s GIDP stat points out something else that gets overlooked. Remember how much running the Yankees did during their surge. Now they never steal a base, never hit and run, never try to manufacture a run even when the situation SCREAMS for it… ie: Melky GIDPO the other night.
If you aren’t hitting you MUST try other things… Girardi has to start managing much more aggressively. He could have started Damon and Jeter in the first inning… if Abreu’s grounder finds a hold the inning is off to a great start..
Cleaning house doesn’t make much sense when you’re five games out of the wild card. There are ZERO position player prospects in the minors that can be promoted.
Moving Damon or Abreu and/or Mussina could open an opportunity or two and might yield a decent prospect. Mussina’s Houdini act might work for a couple of months in the NL where they don’t know him really well. Damon is still an effective leadoff hitter, but that throw last night reminded me of a pickup softball game at a Girl Scout retreat. Abreu might bring more with his contract running out this year and several teams needing a bat… if you are looking long term, dealing Mussina and Abreu makes the most sense, but a total house cleaning aint happening.

GB7:
First part, OK, I’m with you. Second part, not so sure.
Old saying: You can’t win a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel. IMO, let Sherman be Sherman. Girardi has to adjust how he reacts to Joel; it takes two to fight. Unfortunately, to a degree Sherman has a point: Girardi is humorless. Humor is a great weapon when dealing with a dork like Sherman.
Girardi needs to try to laugh at Joel: “OK, Joel. I know this season’s been hard on you too.” Or, “Joel, you need to come down front a little, c’mon guys make room for Joel – he obviously can’t hear me back there.” Fighting with Sherman won’t work.
I know for a fact Im probably going to get beaten on for saying and probably cursed off and other stuff like that, but even though I love the guy, Jeter is alittle over rated. The report that he is the most over rated is bull, because that title belongs to the 25 man roster of the red sux, lol. But Jeter is alittle over rated, He grounds into numerous DP’s, and makes costly errors.
Now let the trashing of me begin…
Jeter is playing hurt. His wrist was swollen yesterday and he was almost a scratch. Girardi should have sat him out, he can’t help us banged up like that. It doesn’t mean he’s not clutch, it just means he’s hurt.
Whoever said Melky should be traded to get Cano focused, he’s 25 for his last 61 – that’s focused, buddy. What more do you want. You create false cause & effect scenarios that have nothing to do with reality, and even spit in the face of reality. It’s July – Cano is going to bat .400 this month, like he always does this time of year.
Also, Melky has two hits down the line FROM THE RIGHT SIDE. I’d say that’s a good sign, since he has been awful right-handed this year. But please, let’s not let facts cloud our view of the two Dominican kids as brainless, lazy and only interested in fun.
For several years, Jeter has had one of the higher ground ball to fly ball ratios in the league. He hits the ball on the ground a lot. He also is not running like he did 2 years ago. Combine them and you get a lot of GIDP.
I mentioned perception versus reality last night. The notion that the Yankees never steal bases is just that. They do steal.
The notion that they ran so much more in the championship years is just that, a notion.
Except for 1998, they are in the middle of the pack leaguewise in stolen bases, just like they are now. 2000, the last World Series winner, they were 6th in the league in stolen bases(same as this year) and 14th in sacifice bunts.
We go through this every year. I was reading it in 2006 when they were second in the league in stolen bases. Last year I think they were 6th again. This is not a team with no speed that does nothing but sit back and wait for 3 run homers. That’s just an exaggeration.
Larry— You’re right. They run “some”, but they run in spurts. When they are running they are winning… that’s my point.
They don’t have to steal 200+ bases, but they have to run when it makes sense… and they should run more when the bats are struggling
Now that you’ve cited that list, Pete, I don’t want to hear you complain anymore when they have Derek Jeter bunt late in the game with a runner on first and no outs. I don’t want to hear anymore, “They have the man with the most hits in Yankee history bunt.” I love Derek, but he is a DP machine.
…I hope Madonna isn’t reading this. She’d get excited by that last sentence.
Time to face the fact that Jeter is just not a very good player anymore. Look at his stats. If he weren’t a big name player, he’d be a backup ss right now. Sad but true.
“UPDATE, 1:25 p.m.: Nice job by Rasner wiggling out of trouble in the first inning. Then Damon walks the walk after talking the talk with a double.
But why in the world would Jeter give away the first strike by trying to bunt? Swing the bat.”
And yet, right away there you go. I’m not saying Jeter should bunt every time in that situation, but if he wants to bunt I can’t argue when he’s 3rd in baseball in GIDP.
MooseCall, go root for another team. And I don’t mean that as a devoted follower of Jeterism, I mean that as a logical thinker who knows he has put up great stats over the course of his career. He’s allowed one mediocre half of a season, and he’s allowed the chance to see what his final stats are at the end of the season before people start saying he’s in decline.
And as far as I can remember, MooseCall, Jeter has always hit into a high percentage of double plays.
86W, I think, if you look month by month, that they have been running more. Check how many stolen bases Arod and Damon have the last 43 games versus the first 43.
I think Abreu could steal more than he does.
Maybe they don’t like to open up first that often with Arod up, although I’ve seen them do it some since Arod came back.
I think Melky could steal some( 15 SBish)
if he got on more. Gardner got on about 3 times and has 2 stolen bases. Jeter I’m not sure about. He’s slowed down, but I still think he has good speed. I think he’s still as fast as Rodriguez. Maybe his legs are bothering. Arod, I think, is just excellent at reading the pitcher. It’s not his pure speed, it’s the jumps he gets.
In any case, it’s another myth. This is not a slow team. Damon and Abreu both being 34 doesn’t change that they have very good speed. As fast as a Carl Crawford? No, but they can run. I think ARod, Jeter, Cabrera and Cano all have above average speed.
I didn’t say they were the fastest team in baseball, but they are not this ridiculousy slow station to station team. That’s a myth.
Jeter only has 12 GIDP. I just looked it up
oh whoops that’s for the last two years
