All he had to do was get through the four, gving up one run and loading the bases but taking no chance of a home run to tie. Also, the Red Sox had hit three Yankee batters to two fo theirs, so it was time to hit more Sox. Thus after the single by Drew (could have been a home run, didn't matter) he hits Manny, taking no chance of a homer AND hitting him a third time! Brilliant message!
