look at it this way, johnny damon is 6th in the league in hitting
if jason varitek had enough plate appearances, he would be 82nd in the league in hitting
    makes sense, right?

  2. gayle July 6th, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Vote early and often as many as 25 times (another joke in the balloting as far asI am concerned)

  3. Chief July 6th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

the whole voting for guys on the all star team is a joke. however, we now see what happens when the players choose the all stars – varitek makes it.

  4. BBFan July 6th, 2008 at 3:08 pm

I would guess, Evan Langoria will win.

  5. stuart July 6th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

I could care less about the all star game and this just proves why.. varitek in the game!!!!HE does hit better thne Jose Molina but that is about it..

Moose deserved it.. Sherrill’s #’s are not that great, yes he has alot of saves but the #’s are not that great..And there are others that are less deserving then Moose..

who cares… NESPN is the sux network and this should not be a suprise…

  6. Mark (Brett has arrived) July 6th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

There will always be guys who don’t deserve, and there will always be snubs. But come on how about in 2004 when Joe took Tom Gordon and Javier Vazquez.

  7. PJH July 6th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

Varitek is clearly deserving. He has .219 average. There is no other all star close to hitting .219.

  8. JoeT 28 in 09!! VOTE GIAMBI - TERRY'S WORSE THEN CASHMAN!! July 6th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

can you guys vote? My computer isn’t showing the validation code so I can’t vote yet :(

  9. The Fallen Phoenix July 6th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

I can’t in good conscience vote Jason Giambi over Evan Longoria. I think there’s a better than even-money chance Giambi makes it as a replacement for David Ortiz, anyway (Bradley will start, but Giambi will take the roster spot, I’d imagine).

I still just don’t know what to say about Varitek. I really don’t.

  10. RayBlay July 6th, 2008 at 3:12 pm

but mark the players voted for tek.. i mean is this mind blowing or what

  11. Mark (Brett has arrived) July 6th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

Oh I agree its a joke Tek is there, but its still an exhibition game that really means little. I am more ready for tonight and the rest of the season then the all star game.

  12. gayle July 6th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

As much as it pains me taking a look at other catchers what other AL catcher would you have there? If Posada had been having any kind of season he would be there but alas he is not so that leaves who. Ivan Rodriquez??

  13. 86w183 July 6th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Actually Molina has a higher batting avg than Veriprick. I bet half the national league PITCHERS have better batting averages than him. Easily the worst All-Star selection in my lifetime, and I’m 50!

Just goes to show you the guys inside the game don’t really know it as well as serious fans do. Remember managers and coaches gave the Gold Glove to Rafael Palmeiro in a season which he started eleven games at the position. He should send that trophy to Tino Martinez next time he has a breal between injections and perjury.

  14. RayBlay July 6th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

gayle, is there any catcher hitting worse than him? i think that guy would be hard to find… aj pierzynski is hitting 299

  15. jennifer- I got your back Girardi July 6th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

gayle, it doesn’t matter. What a joke. .216 avg and he is on the all star team. Mussina second in wins, will be going to the local fair. A little unfair if you ask me.

  16. jennifer- I got your back Girardi July 6th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

And actually mussina has pitched well enough to have a least two more wins, so he’d actually be leading.

  17. mel July 6th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

We can agree that ‘Tek’s not an all-star, but who else do you put in? Jorge can’t even throw.

  18. Bob(The Original) July 6th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

Not that I care about the Mets, but how does Aramis Ramirez win out over David Wright?

Being that the game is NY, their #s are pretty close, and the Cubs already have a bunch of guys playing, Wright should be on the team.

  19. Mark (Brett has arrived) July 6th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

You could make a STRONG case for Pudge AJ or Kurt Suzuki.

  20. Andy In Sunny Daytona Beach July 6th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

Too bad AJ is an AH.

  21. 86w183 July 6th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

AJ Pierzinski is hitting .299 with more RBI and the same (7) number of homers.

  22. jennifer- I got your back Girardi July 6th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

The teams are the biggest joke. Take away the voting from the fans and the players. Just a popularity contest on both ends.

  23. gayle July 6th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Listen I am not happy about Varitek either but we have to look at it rationally. I know it is hard for most of us lol. Catching is not all about offense as far as I am aware. He was voted in by his piers. I have never heard any complaints about Varitek behind the plae, he works well with pitchers and obviously has the respect of other players in the game.

The thing that ticks me off is that it would have pretty much a sure thing for Posada to be there if he had stayed healthy.

  24. RayBlay July 6th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

jennifer, who would you leave it to? managers? reporters? people who work for mlb?

  25. BBB July 6th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Most teams’ backup catchers are more deserving of an ASG spot than Varitek. We know Jose Molina is, he has a higher avg and can actually throw guys out. Hell, Greg Zaun deserves to go more than Vagitek does! But in all seriousness, what about Pierzynski or the Angels’ Mike Napoli? The latter has 12 or 13 HR, that’s a lot for a catcher..

  26. JoeT 28 in 09!! VOTE GIAMBI - TERRY'S WORSE THEN CASHMAN!! July 6th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

at least when sux fans talk about Jeters intangible’s we can now mention tek

  27. randy l July 6th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

    francona picks varitek?

one more reason to hate the red sox.

  28. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 July 6th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

    Voted

  29. Andy In Sunny Daytona Beach July 6th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

    Gayle,

I hate when the docks vote for Varitek. haha J/K

  30. The Fallen Phoenix July 6th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

You can make a strong case that there are thirty-two catchers in the American League who are better selections than Varitek. Thirty-two catchers, and yes, that includes back-ups, because there have been back-ups who have contributed more offensively (or not contributed as little offensively) as Varitek has thus far this season.

    It’s sad, but it’s true.

I *do* think that MLB should either expand the rosters, or just drop the one player from each team rule, though. If they’re actually going to make the All Star Game count for something, I mean. If it just stayed a “meaningless” exhibition game, than those gimmicks are absolutely fine, but if this is a game that’s supposed to decide WS home-field advantage, then you want your league’s best players on the roster, no matter which team they play for.

  31. jennifer- I got your back Girardi July 6th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

ray- I don’t know, the players on there are just a joke.

  32. JoeT 28 in 09!! VOTE GIAMBI - TERRY'S WORSE THEN CASHMAN!! July 6th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Posada still should make the team based on the second half of last season – which should count – and the fact that he’s 100X better then tek even when he’s hurt. The stats after the all-star game should count for the next years so it’s one full year of stats

  33. Bob(The Original) July 6th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Seriously, not saying Posada should go, but he has about the same production as Varitek in about half the ABs this season.

It’s one thing to reward your when guys when it’s close to being a toss up, but this Varitek selection is a joke.

  34. gayle July 6th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Andy i know lol hate the long gone edit button that used to be here

  35. mel July 6th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

They should’ve left it to Morgan and Gammons.

Would’ve made it a lot easier. Reds vs. Red Sox.

  36. John July 6th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

    Mel,

Who else? Well, I would argue that, even with his terrible and hurt arm, Posada would deserve it more than Veriprick, but how about ANYONE ELSE: Pudge Rodriguez has better numbers, Joe Buck does to, and while I can’t stand this guy either, if you look at his numbers, AJ Pierzynski actually has numbers DESERVING of an All Star appearance. Really, a quick look at every other catcher’s numbers indicates that all would have been more deserving than Captain Can’t Hit

  37. Doris From Rego Park July 6th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

you can always tell a true person’s basbeall IQ by how they (over)react to the final playes chosen

  38. mel July 6th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

    John,

    I agree, AJ’s having a great year.

  39. JoeT 28 in 09!! VOTE GIAMBI - TERRY'S WORSE THEN CASHMAN!! July 6th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

if .219 makes the all-star team, go buy my jersey now, because I’ll be on the roster next year

  40. mel July 6th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Did Harden get snubbed? Having a little trouble today.

  41. michael July 6th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

lets get the stache into the game. everyone should submit their 25 votes.

  42. Peter Gammons July 6th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

Varitek is clearly deserving. He has .219 average. There is no other all star close to hitting .219.
    Besides, he plays for Boston.

  43. BBB July 6th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

just out of curiousity, who is everyone voting for in the NL? Pat the Bat for me.

  44. gayle July 6th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Pat B for me as well

  45. BBB July 6th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Mel, yeah, Harden got snubbed. I guess they figured they already had their A’s representative with Doucherererererrr (his name cracks me up) – too bad they didn’t abide by the same unwritten rule when it came to the Angels staff! Saunders and Lackey both deserve to go, but Ervin Santana? LOL. Even putting Moose aside for a moment, Harden and James Shields are both way more deserving.

  46. joshn728 July 6th, 2008 at 4:47 pm

I can’t believe Mussina didn’t get on! Well hopefully Giambi’s strong New York backing will win him the final vote…I’ll certainly do my part..

….well off to the game in the Bronx! Taking the subway in…lets go yankees!

  47. Kevin July 6th, 2008 at 4:54 pm

“There will always be guys who don’t deserve, and there will always be snubs. But come on how about in 2004 when Joe took Tom Gordon and Javier Vazquez.”

    These number’s are undeserving?

Vazquez at the break in ’04:
    10-5, 3.56 ERA, 118.2 IP, 105 H, 32 BB, 95 K

Gordon at the break in ’04:
    44 G, 50.2 IP, 1.78 ERA, 27 H, 14 BB, 47 K

Vazquez’s numbers were arguably better then Mussina’s this year, and you see all the love for Mussina to make it.

  48. Espresso July 6th, 2008 at 5:14 pm

I would guess that the players like A.J. as much as we all do. Now that Posada can’t throw he and Varitek are about even on defense. He must be a closet jerk.

  49. Steve July 6th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

If the players were voting, why didn’t they vote for Posada? Obviously neither JV or Jorge deserve to be there, but with the game being at Yankee stadium, why not Jorge. Also, the baseball expert “Buster” from NESPN said that Francona should start Mo. What an original thought. Wonder were he came up with that idea. I am sure he’ll credit Francona if it happens.
