Just to be fair, don’t hate on Francona

Peter Abraham
July
6

While anger drives blog traffic, it’s only right that I point out the players voted Jason Varitek onto the team, he wasn’t selected by Terry Francona. Further evidence that the players should have no role in this.

It goes to show you how much they hate A.J. Pierzynski (.299/.338/.447).

Francona picked Carlos Guillen, Dioner Navarro, Joakim Soria, George Sherrill, Justin Duchscherer and Joe Nathan.

UPDATE, 3:47 p.m.: The players also went with Joe Crede (.260/.336/.480) over Evan Longroia (.281/.351/.529) and Mike Lowell (.302/.361/.525). Seriously, Joe Crede?

UPDATE, 7:15 p.m.: Here is the audio of Terry Francona’s All-Star press conference today. This will give you some insight into the process.

  1. Yankees are not good

    He still sucks

  2. mel

LOL. They must really hate A.J.

  3. JoeT 28 in 09!! VOTE GIAMBI - TERRY'S WORSE THEN CASHMAN!!

Moose over Sherrill, Giambi over Guillen… we can still hate Terry Pete. Can we get a full list of players who voted for Tek so we know who to boo more then usual?

  4. GGTM

Varitek voted to the team … wow … just wow.

  5. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Joet I agree. I want to see what morons voted for Fairy tek.

  6. Phil

This is what happens when so many kids with no college make the bigs. Stupid voting.

  7. Bob(The Original)

Darn, I wanted to hate on Francona for it. lol

  8. gayle

These are the same players that voted Arod and Jeter the first 2 to start a team wih and them voted them the 1st and 2nd most overated players.

    Need I say more.

  9. will

Wow, an ex yankee prospect is an all star what did we get for Mr.Navvaro?

  10. mel

I think it’s safe to say that no Rays or Yankees voted for Jason Varitek.

  11. The Fallen Phoenix

Should be Longoria over Guillen, in my opinion. Actually, Longoria over Crede, but what can you do?

I guess what makes it upsetting, as a fan, is that the All Star Game actually counts for something. If it didn’t (and I think making it count for homefield advantage was one of the more questionable decisions MLB has made over the years), I wouldn’t mind so much that Varitek is on the roster.

Oh well, what can you do?

  12. Fran

Gayle – lol. You really summed it up.

  13. Irish

Sherrill is the only representative from the Orioles, so he had to put him on.

  14. The Fallen Phoenix

Navarro was included along with Brad Halsey and Javier Vazquez in the Randy Johnson trade, in the winter of 2004.

He was then flipped from Arizona to Tampa Bay, but I don’t remember who the Diamondbacks received for him. I do recall that Javy Vazquez was flipped to the White Sox in the trade that brought back Chris B. Young, I believe.

  15. Deb

Seriously? Wow! Varitek must have some extensive blackmail material, as I can’t believe he’s that popular amongst his peers…. or perhaps he is!?

Question: Do the A/L players use the yankees lockers and N/L the Vistors?

If so, I’d like to know what comment Moose will leave on his wipeboard ;-)

  16. Jack

While Giambi and Moose deserved to make it over Guillen and Sherrill, MLB still has the moronic “every team must be represented” rule. And I hate to say it, but Moose shouldn’t have been on the team – the AL pitchers who were chosen, other than Sherrill, all were better.

Still, the players voting in Varitek…WTF?

  17. Rafi

Same thing with Guillen. Hard to believe that with that offense, he’s the only one to make it(and he only made it b/c he had to)

  18. BBFan

“Wow, an ex yankee prospect is an all star what did we get for Mr.Navvaro?”

Jeremy in the supplemntal round this year.
It is a long story. :)
He was sent in the Johnson trade.
We got Vizcaino and when he we left we got the supplemental draft with which we picked Jeremy.

  19. The Fallen Phoenix

After checking Baseball-Reference, Javy was actually flipped to the White Sox for Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, Luis Vizcaino, and Chris B. Young.

I find that incredibly interesting, considering Vizcaino was part of the trade to get the Big Unit back from the Yankees. Really interesting player-progression as a result of those trades.

Okay, Navarro was flipped to the Dodgers before he was flipped to the Rays (I thought there was one other trade involved there); the most notable name involved in the Dbacks-Dodgers trade was Shawn Green (going from the Dodgers to the Dbacks), and Navarro was dealt along with Jae Weong Seo (former Mets farmhand) for…crap, really (Mark Hendrickson and Toby Hall?). Well, I take that back, Toby Hall is decent, but…

  20. John

Fear not everyone, we can all still hate Francona as Tito was the one who decided that THREE Angels pitchers should make the team over Mike Mussina. That was his decision and his alone. Also, I find it sorta funny that the only two players who made it from the Rays were Kazmir and Navarro. Team with the best record in baseball only has two going to the game? Hmmmmm………….wonder if any Rays were left off by Tito because of the lingering bad feelings that exist between the two clubs?
All I know is, the idea of that schmuck sitting in the manager’s office at Yankee Stadium for the All Star Game in the last season of the Stadium makes me sick. Screw it, I choose to believe Francona rigged the players vote for Tek. Now I feel better.

  21. Phil

Navarro was traded to the Dodgers and then to Tampa Bay. He didn’t go from AZ to the Dodgers.

  22. Mehdi iis one half Arsenal and one half Yankees

I dont think we as Yankee fans can complain too much. I remember one all star game in particular when Torre was getting a lot of criticism for putting too many Yankees on the team and I think his selection Jeter or Posada was questioned. I think though it was validated as they both had a great game in helping the AL win that year.

  23. Phil

I mean he didn’t go from AZ to Tampa. He went from LA to Tampa.

  24. Chris

Would Boston have so many players if they had 2 teams? I think that New York players sometime suffer. Immagine if New York had only 1 team to vote for, Boston would never make the team.

  25. Kevin

    We give up:

    Javier Vazquez
    Brad Halsey
    Dioner Navarro

    We have now:

    Jeremy Bleich (sp?)
    Ross Ohlendorf
    Alberto Gonzalez
    Steven Jackson

  26. Frank

When Jason Varitek gets introduced… the stadium should erupt in laughter.

    No need to get angry.

  27. kunaldo

    wait, where’s mo???

when do you think theyll have BP today? 6?

  28. JoeT 28 in 09!! VOTE GIAMBI - TERRY'S WORSE THEN CASHMAN!!

Frank – that will be the national league dugout that’s laughing

  29. BBFan

“Would Boston have so many players if they had 2 teams? I think that New York players sometime suffer. Immagine if New York had only 1 team to vote for, Boston would never make the team.”

That is a good point, but NY has more than twice the population of Boston :)

  30. The Fallen Phoenix

I know Phil, I corrected it. As I posted along with the corrected trade history, I thought there was one other trade involved, it didn’t feel right typing that Navarro was flipped directly to the Rays from Arizona.

I have to say that when you consider the Javy VazquezRandy JohnsonVizcaino exchange, and include Javy flipping off to the White Sox, I think the Diamondbacks actually got the shortest stick of all three teams.

Granted, Young had a great rookie season last year, but he’s really regressed this year. Not quite sure where his speed went, and he hasn’t been any more selective at the plate, although his power is still there. Though getting Randy back might prove to be a good thing, as he really solidifies the back end of that rotation if healthy (big if, of course).

Still, Vazquez has been money for the Sox, and he’s still only 31, so there’s reason to believe he can continue to be a front-line pitcher for the next couple of years. He’d be even better if he ever cut back on the longball, but he’s always good for 200 above-average innings year after year with 200 strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Vizcaino did a great job shoring the bullpen last year, and Ohlendorf has potential as a solid middle-reliever, too. The key for the trade(s) for the Yankees, though, is probably going to be Jeremy Bleich – if he pans out, I think the Yankees come in 2nd behind the White Sox in those trades. Otherwise, it’s probably a dead-heat between the Diamondbacks and Yankees right now.

Then again, Shawn Green had a good year in 2005 for the D’backs. Didn’t help them make the playoffs, though, and they didn’t exactly get much from the Mets for him in 2006.

  31. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Wait I got it, the NL players voted for Fairy, cause they knew how bad he is.

  32. Andrew [in] Orlando

Enough with the voting system period. Every year it sucks. What would be perfect is a BCS for all star games.

  33. The Fallen Phoenix

So actually, I guess the keys to those trades are going to be Chris B. Young and Jeremy Bleich, and how well they develop for their respective teams.

I still wish the Yankees never traded Javy Vazquez to begin with, but that’s beating a (long-)dead horse.

  34. Global Warming

You have to remember that each team gets 1 so don’t hate on Sherril and Guillen.

  35. Lauren

SUPER LAME that he didn’t take Moose.

  36. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

I guess now the only way Moose gets in, is if a pitcher gets hurt or decides not to go?

  37. Nick

If Francona truly wanted to win the game to get home field advantage for the AL he would have Varitek fake an injury so the best team can be fielded.
Loyalty is one thing but Varitek ??????

  38. MoBoy(aka McLovin)

Moose as a reserve pitcher Yes.But he still isn’t as good as Roy,Holliday or Cliff Lee.

Just like Wang playing with the Yankees helps you look better.Remember Randy Johnson won 17 games in 2006 and had a high 5.00 era.

  39. Joe from Long Island

I can understand that Varitek brings more to the table than hitting, that he does wonders with the Red Sox pitching staff. I respect that.

But that won’t be a factor in the All Star Game, so can somebody please explain to me the logic that led him to be selected? If the players voted him on, can one of them explain what they see? I really would like to be educated on this. Because the alternative answer is not flattering to MLB players.

  40. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    MoBoy(aka McLovin)

Are you kidding me? Did you not see the game Mike pitched yesterday? 0 runs in 6 innings against the soxs?

  41. sw

Just like Wang playing with the Yankees helps you look better.Remember Randy Johnson won 17 games in 2006 and had a high 5.00 era.

This year it’s Mussina that makes the Yankees look better, if you ask me. They’ve scored two runs in six games he’s started this year and one run and three runs once each. The defense is slow and old for the most part, so the only benefit he’s been getting from being a Yankee this year is that he’s been backed by a rock-solid bullpen.

  42. Fran

O/T – Nadal just won Wimbledon in 5 sets.

  43. Neil

Rays win again 9-2. Boston can be 5 games out and 7 in the loss column with a Yankee win tonight. C’mon Joba and c’mon offensive support.

  44. S.A.- I still believe in this team, but can the offense stop being so offensive?

    Rock on Nadal!

  45. gayle

Fran just an unbelievable match one for the ages for sure

“I can understand that Varitek brings more to the table than hitting, that he does wonders with the Red Sox pitching staff. I respect that.”

I disagree. It’s catching – you put down your finger and catch the ball. Most of the pitches are called based on the gameplan anyway. He doesn’t throw anybody out and really can’t hit anymore.

  47. mel

Fantastic Wimbeldon final. Congratulations to Nadal. Such a humble young man.

  48. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Well not surprised, Joe Crede I understand, I mean GG defense hits like a beast w/ RISP him and Quentin have been solid for Chicago, How Tek makes it over AJ Pierzynski IDK, how Jetes is the starting SS over Micheal Young, REALLY, REALLY, Jetes this season has been down right near terrible basically sleep walking, meanwhile Micheal Young is one of the toughest outs in baseball and a better SS yet he gets snubbed to reserve ? Seriously what a joke. Another one a great a Manny is over Carlos Quentin ? over Milton Bradley ? really and Who’s the morons that actually put the midget Pedroia over Ian Kinsler, Ian Kinsler has had a near MVP type season, What a joke  Mussina gets snubbed, Giambi gets put in final voting, Hey it’s turned into a popularity contest and this is why the fan voting needs to be cut out after this year.

  49. SJ44

After awhile, complaining about the ASG is a waste of time.

The Yankees are tied with Baltimore for 4th place in the AL East in the loss column. They have 3 guys on the team.

Most 4th place teams don’t have 3 all stars. Especially one who doesn’t deserve to be there (Jeter) this year.

While Moose may have gotten hosed, Jeter certainly isn’t having an all star year. It evens out.

  50. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    NADAL WON!

    Oh, this makes me happy!

  51. BBB

“I guess now the only way Moose gets in, is if a pitcher gets hurt or decides not to go?”

That, or if one of the starters pitches the Sunday before the game, thereby rendering him unavailable for the ASG. That’s how Moose was invited in 2006, but he declined and told them to move the game to Wednesday if they wanted to avoid hurdles like that, lol. He will probably decline again if he is asked under the same circumstances. And I don’t blame him. Why should he accept sloppy seconds when he should be starting? Besides, he really wants to go to that demolition derby in Hughesville PA!

  52. Blargh

    Nadal won? Damn, Federer’s slipping…

  53. j

posada has much better numbers than varetik and he has played fewer games and he has been less than 100%. that a real all-star

  54. BBB

Also, even though Francona didnt pick Fairytek, I think we can safely hate on him for not picking Moose! He definitely wants to limit the number of Yankee players at the game, remember the last time he managed he put 2 Yankees on the final man ballot so as to split the votes so neither one got in?

  55. Andy In Sunny Daytona Beach

Nadal has to do something about evening out that right arm. His left arm is ripped and his right arm is puny.

  56. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

posada has much better numbers than varetik and he has played fewer games and he has been less than 100%. that a real all-star

They both shouldn’t be in there.

    Ian Kinsler (should be starting)
    Micheal Young (should be starting)
Mike Mussina (should be in this roster)
    AJ Pierzynski (should be starting)
    Milton Bradley (should be starting)

    All SNUBBED

  57. A-nother meaningless homerun by -rod

Nadal has the legs that Federrer does not have

  58. A-nother meaningless homerun by -rod

Does anyone know who created the bostondirtdogs.com site?

  59. randy l

what no livan hernandez on the all star team?

    crap!

  60. Ryan

If there’s a team that has a right to be pissed about not having any pitchers selected, it’s the White Sox.

John Danks (2.50 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) and Gavin Floyd (3.22 ERA, 1.12 WHIP) deserved being selected over Moose.

  61. BBB

Anyway I guess I’m alone here, but I don’t really see how it is so horrendous for Jeter to get the start. There is no SS in the AL having a truly excellent season. As badly as Jeter has struggled, he and Young have put up very very very similar numbers. Young’s are marginally better in most categories, but only very marginally. Jeter edged him for the start in his home park, and why shouldn’t he? If the game were in Texas I would expect Young to get the start instead.

  62. Bronxbyte

Francona will have some beautiful chemistry on the All Star team. Mixing Varitek and Youkilis with A-Rod should do wonders not to mention Kazmir and Navarro.
I wouldn’t blame the classy Mariano one bit if he went to the bullpen in the 7th inning and didn’t say a word to Papelbon and just waited until the Boston bullpen coach said Francona called and to get ready to come in.

  63. BBB

What about the Mariners? Felix definitely deserves to go. It’s wrong that he won’t be there just because the fans wrongly decided to vote for Ichiro, thus giving Seattle their mandatory representative.

  64. Laura - Praying team meeting helped!

This was probably one of the best Wimbeldon’s every. Both finals matches were good. I feel sorry for Roger. He should have won that second set.

  65. Joe Schmoe 2

Not that this has anything to do with baseball or the Yankees, Rafael Nadal deserves to be the number 1 player in the world starting tomorrow. He has just beaten the current world’s number 1 in back-to-back Grand Slam finals. I’ve said my piece. Rock on Rafa!!

  66. Laura - Praying team meeting helped!

I’d like Rafa more if he’d stop digging in his butt during matches. I mean, really dude – buy some new pants!

  67. gayle

Erik Bedard to miss his next start this time shoulder

  68. BBFan

Does any one know how many times we can vote for Giambi?
I voted number of times, it never stopped me from voting again and again.

  69. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

You can literally say he is not having an allstar season

    Young .292/.342/.421 w/ 7 HR, 46 RBI, 31 XBH

    4.85 RFg, .987 FPCT

    Jeter .282/.345/.387 w/ 4 HR, 36 RBI, 23 XBH

    4.10 RFg, .978 FPCT

I’m always for my guy on my team making it when they deserve it. Yankees Stadium or no Yankees Stadium Jeter if it were up to me statistically and game playing wise would not be a starter over Micheal Young. That was a terrible fan vote, it’s discounting Micheal Young’s season.

  70. Espresso

I think Mauer is a fair pick to start, but I agree that A.J. should be the reserve, and if you’re going to have folks there for reasons other than on the field stuff then it should have been Pudge. Then you wouldn’t need Guillen.

The Rays should have guys on the roster, but are you going to put in Longoria over Arod? There are at least as many arguments to be made as there are positions. Dye is putting up better numbers than Manny and Quentin. Damon is putting up all star numbers. Magglio Ordonez probably deserves to go, but he’s hurt anyway.

  71. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

And who the best out Aaron Rowand, he was snubbed to the 19 th power in the NL ! :x

  72. Christa

So who do we think is going to agree to participate in the home run derby?

  73. Espresso

Sorry for the double post. Felix Hernandez is hurt so he probably wouldn’t go anyway. Ichiro is again leading the majors in hits. He is tied for the most runs scored and he is playing on a really bad team. He is again the best lead off man in the game. So he should be the Mariners player.

We can still hate on Francona. He’s ugly and his mother dresses him funny.

  74. BBFan

It is really raining here today.
Hopefully there will be a game.
    Another three hours to go.

  75. BBFan

“So who do we think is going to agree to participate in the home run derby?”

    Gimabi is a possibility.

  76. BBB

BBFan – I was wondering the same thing. When I voted for starters, I’d get a message that I was at my voting limit after 25 times. With the final man vote, I’ve been hitting “vote again” for like an hour, and they haven’t stopped me yet. And to think I’ve collected different email addresses from everyone from my boyfriend’s grandma to my hairdresser, just so I could vote more if a Yankee was on the ballot. All for naught!

  77. Lampchop Louie

I’ll bet there’s lots of politics involved and some hanging chads at the ballot boxes also.

  78. BBB

Brandon – it is definitely unarguable that Jeter is not having a great season and that Young is having a better season. I just don’t think that his season is SO much better than Jeter’s that it makes it completely preposterous for Jeter to get the start, especially taking into consideration the whole home field advantage and last ASG at Yankee Stadium thing. And who knows, in the next week before the game Young could get cold while Jeter goes on a tear, and then their numbers would be virtually identical.

  79. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

According to ed price, damon is destined to go on the dl. Said via a text message that his shoulder is still not better.

  80. BBB

Anyway, about the Final Man vote, I think the ’stache has a pretty good chance of making it, but I just want to remind everybody that the White Sox shamelessly employ PR campaigns to get their guy in whenever one of them is on the Final Man ballot. They had a home game today and undoubtedly started campaigning already. Fortunately they’re off tomorrow and on the road starting Tues, so hopefully their nonsense will not have much chance to gain ground. But just wanted to remind everyone that theyre not above doing that, and the Yankees obviously are, so VOTE VOTE VOTE for the Big G till yer fingers fall off! :D

  81. Sudakis

Mussina definitely got robbed but get off this Giambi snub stuff. So the guy has a bunch of homers. Two months ago you all wanted him off the team and he was playing himself out of the league. As an admitted roid user, everything he does should be taken with a grain of salt. And instead of calling him The ‘Stache, a real journalist/beat writer would be investigating this suspicious rebirth instead of waving his Jason pom-poms.

Mussina = screwed. Giambi = bum

  82. Steve

If you are at the game tonight chant 216 every time JV bats. 55,000 people should send a good message on NESPN. Also a chant of MOOOOOSE should happen a dozen times. F Francona. He has no class.

  83. Rob Thompson

    Steve,

Amen, brother. Francona was a punk as a player, punk as a manager. Who do you think ordered a roided out Tek to sucker punch A-Rod with his mask on?

Don’t get me started on Pedroia making it too over super smooth Robby Cano. Kinsler should be the starter, Robby the backup. Pedroia probably got the Mayor of Munchkinland, the lolly-pop guild and the other midgets to stuff the ballot box.

  84. Rob Thompson

You can vote up to 25 times for Giambi. Just a reminder, you can vote more than that. I voted 25 times, then deleted my cookie for MLB. Then logged back in with a new email account (I’ve got 12 by the way.) And then voted again – I plan on repeating the process over the next few days. Yankee universe needs your support, everyone!!!

  85. Patrick Bateman

Who’s the 90 year old man asking questions in the audio? They should put him on Baseball Tonight with a voice like that. Would probably be better than Steve Phillips.

  86. Patrick Bateman

Does Varitek have the lowest average for an All Star in the history of the game? .219 is pretty low.

  87. madcat

nothing fair in the world, isn’t it.however, the allstar roster just show how francona is selflish manager benefit for his own team.j.d drew isn’t a all-star player.

  88. Toxic

But I want to hate Francona
