adrian gonzalez should be in the derby, and carlos quentin and milton bradley if giambi doesn’t get in
that’s just hilarious about the ’stache, pete.
what have you started?
Pete started the ’stache thing? If so, that’s cool.
Anyone know the plan for Humberto?
I voted like 300 times for gimabi just cause i wanted to see him in the HR Derby
Can we have a blog stache competition? I shaved my beard this weekend and left the stache. I also went to the Texas/O’s game on Sunday sporting my yankees cap and Giambi tshirt. I got a few good reactions.
I was going to shave it after the game but decided to keep it for awhile.
Anyway I vote for stache competition! Make it happen!
They’re killing ‘Tek in the ASG on ATH. Too bad Jackie McMullin’s not there. I’d love to see her defend that one (and you know she’d try).
mel – hope i’m not mis-remembering this, as hillary might say, but i’m sure pete kicked the whole ’stache thing off, back when it was less “powerful lip fur”..
Boston fans sink even lower.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080707/ap_on_re_us/baseball_beating
FALMOUTH, Mass. – A man was ordered held without bail Monday for allegedly beating a New York man with a baseball bat because he thought the man was a Yankees fan.
As it turned out, the New Yorker allegedly beaten in the land of the Red Sox isn’t even a big baseball fan.
(click link above to read rest)
i’m kind of amused by the name of that town. Beckett should get a house there…
From previous thread:
mel-
Personally, I’m not a fan of the way the ’stache looks. But if the ’stache can keep hitting to the opposite field, I’ll support it.
(It’s all a bit silly and over-the-top, but in a season where a lot of things are going quite so well, you have to celebrate what you can.)
Evan Longoria, if he continues, will likely get rookie of the year and have many, many more years to be an all-star and try his hand at the homerun derby. I’m not crying for Evan Longoria.
If Giambi doesn’t make it, I’m rooting for Josh Hamilton. (But I’m probably not going to watch it unless Jason IS in it.)
Pete, you’re on fire today.
It would be nice to have Giambi in the derby for Olde Time’s Sake. He had some great moments in the Home Run Derby, including the title in ‘02 and that round in 2001 when he smashed 14. I hope Dan Uggla wins it, however. U of M!!
mel- Yesterday’s final was incredible! The only disappointment for me was that the wrong guy won. The two things that killed Roger were Rafa’s serves out wide to Roger’s backhand in the ad court (most of the time) and Federer’s lack of success on break point chances.
…and (for the home run hitting contest fall-out) let’s check all the participant’s second half home run stats to see if it messes up their swings. It sure did to Abreu, Wright and others?????
Glad to see that Tampa Bay lost today. I hope it is the start of a loosing streak for them.
Fran -
I’m glad they lost, but I’m glad they’re not coming into the stadium on a losing streak. So far this season, it seems that every team (maybe I exaggerate for effect) that comes to town on a losing streak ends it against the Yankees. One loss is not a streak, so I think the Rays might be just simply back down to earth. Not on a winning streak, not on a losing streak. Neutral.
Back to the first part of Pete’s post though.
Sanchez is not expected to help the major league team this season, correct?
But Bruney, he might come back? If so, who gets the heave-ho? The not-so-hot hand? Or Robertson? But I guess I’m getting ahead of myself. 13 pitches isn’t really close to being back, is it?
Doreen -
That is a great point. Boston came in having lost 5 in a row and look what happened on Thursday – I guess they were due. But it would sure be nice if Tampa left here on Wednesday with a 3 game loosing streak!
Fran -
From your mouth (keyboard?) to the baseball gods’ ears!
J-Dawg,
It took everything Nadal had and more to beat Federer. That’s a testament to Federer’s greatness.
Pete’s record lives another day.
There were some great points, but as I was watching it wasn’t the “greatest” that everyone, including McEnroe said it was.
I felt that there were so many epic battles between McEnroe/Connors and others. Where every shot was a winner.
I don’t know if everyone was feeling the afterglow of the match, but I’m rather surprised to hear the greatest of all time invoked by all the experts to describe it.
BTW, do you like the Mayo trade? Kevin Love was fantastic during his short time in Memphis.
It would be fun to see the stache in the Derby again, but if he makes it, he will probably pull a hammy and be out the second half. I was lucky enough to have 20th row directly behind home plate at Safeco in Seattle for the Derby and he put on quite a show.
I like to refer to it as Roidfest because it was Barry, Sammy, The Giambino, and Luis Gonzales (damn you!) at the peak of juicing. Barry was hitting 475ft missles that I swear were still rising when they hit the upper deck and the Stache was hitting towering shots off the Hit It Here Cafe on a regular basis.
Pete, Vlad Guerrero is also in it, according to ESPN.
Can somebody tell me what ESPN caught A-Rod and Abreu doing in the dugout. I’ve heard about it but never understood what happned???
The Rays have to play many a game on the road starting the 2nd half.
Anybody who doesnt believe in the ESPN bias just watch the Sox game on right now I got a chuckle before first pitch. They were bragging about Varitek being an all-star and praising his defense then a stat displayed saying that he has thrown out only 16% of runners lol. NESPN is a joke such a colossal joke.
its not official yet, the vlad situation
Vladimir Guerrero, the defending champion, told MLB.com that he intends to compete as well. He has not been officially confirmed by Major League Baseball, however.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/allstar08/news/story?id=3476173
“The Rays have to play many a game on the road starting the 2nd half.”
Very true why has Tampa had so many home-games starting the season I guess they are set up for a big meltdown come the 2nd half.
I know we want to say the Rays are on a losing streak, but I’m pretty sure the swept the Red Sox, then won 3 against the Royals, and lost in 10 innings to the Royals today – so 6-1 in the last 7…. that’s a pretty hot team if you ask me. Not to mention that they have the best record in baseball and have played the toughest schedule as well (based on win-loss records of the teams they’ve played) – heard that on NESPN the other day so I don’t have a link but still – they’re playing incredible baseball
Nice Call Ump,
http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2008/07/07/about-last-night/#comment-427288
Geez I know he had TJ but I am itching to see Sanchez come throught the system already he has great stuff. He has been a touted prospect since he was on the Tigers I cant wait for his call-up perhaps September.
Matsu-sucka loaded the bases against the Twinkies in the first nearly 30 pitches lol.
JoeT -
No, the Rays aren’t on a losing streak. We want them to go on one, but we know they’re not currently on one. One loss doesn’t make a losing streak. What we’re “happy” about is that they snapped their winning streak.
Augh, the Twins had Dice-K on the ropes, bases loaded, he walked two guys, and this loser Delmon Young comes up and swings at the first pitch and hits the saddest grounder to the pitcher I’ve ever seen.
So Delmon Young swings at the first pitch, after DiceK just issued his second walk of the first inning to load the bases – and tops one back to the mound, out 1 to 3.
Nice to know we’re not the only team capable of that kind of offense.
If Vladimir Guerrero competes in the Home Run Derby, his batting practice pitcher doesn’t need to throw the ball down the middle. He needs to throw pitches that are four to six inches above the ground, and pitches that are three feet outside. Vladdy feasts on those!
mel- The match wasn’t the greatest to me either, but it was still very, very good. For me, the truest greatness is the 1980 Wimbledon final between Borg and McEnroe. There was plenty of drama in yesterday’s match, but for me, the truest drama lies within a match like Pete’s ‘96 U.S. Open quarterfinal against Alex Corretja, the one where he vomited in the 5th set tiebreak.
The Mayo trade is a BIG hit with me and the people in the Memphis area. And while the trading of Love created a hole at power forward, we were able to fill it when we got Darrell Arthur. Overall, I’m pretty satisfied.
LoL. Carl Crawford dilly-dallied getting the ball back to the infield, so Teahen scored on a single from first.
Dice-K ahead of schedule. 25 pitches in the first. He’ll still end up winning the game, somehow.
Is it just at our house or does ESPN go to commercials in the middle of innings everywhere? Happened last week and just happened again during the Sox game.
25 pitches in the first for Dice-K is below average isn’t it?
Only guy ever that can throw 120 pitches through 5 innings and not give up a run
25 pitches in the first for Dice-K is below average isn’t it?
Only guy ever that can throw 120 pitches through 5 innings and not give up a run
JoeT,
He’s usually out by the 5th, 3 more innings like that and he’ll be out sooner.
I cant believe that we are even having to discuss Tampa bay in July I hope we get a nice sweep then they can go into a tail-spin similar to the Orioles a few years back and the Mariners last year.
I’d rather have Dice K than Kei Igawa. That is for sure.
Kei Igawa has become a punch-line.
AL from BK – so FairyTek (who said fairytek? i love it) is an all-star at .219 and the defense is he’s a great defensive catcher who throws out a grand total of 16% of runners!!!! Jose Molina hits for a higher average and I think Brandon posted earlier that he has thrown out 25 runners of 51.
Yeah there’s MUCH more to catching then throwing runners out, but this is the major leagues not high school – catchers that can handle the staff and do the little things are out there, and I’m willing to bet they’ll hit better (or at least) .219, and throw out better then 16%…. this is an embarrassment that the players voted Fairytek in.
The people in Memphis don’t even care about the NBA team there. Why should we?
My fingers are tired from typing the validation code thing on voting.
Bootsy,
J-Dawg and I always talk basketball. If it really bothers you, I’ll stop. Just let me know.
27 – glad i’m not the only one
– GO STACHE!!
I really hope Tony Kubek comes back to the STadium for Old Times Day or at least one more time before it closes down. Have not seen him in a while.
If you ask what made me think of him watching the 77 ASG and he is one of the announcers
Has there been any word if Hank/Hal are gonna bring Willie back or anything with him for the ASG?
I hope Giambi wins the HR Derby. Be nice to rub that fact in the face of the Sux
I also hope for some reason Francona gets ejected. That would be funny.
Anyone know who the coaches are going to be?
**by bringing Willie back…I meant bringing him in for the ASG…not back with the organization
27 this year -
How does Giambi possibly winning the HR derby do anything to the Red Sox?
Francona’s a decent guy. His only shortcoming is he’s managing the wrong team.
The only 2 coaches I know for sure are Girardi and Leyland.
just read a story from sportsline that a new york man was beaten by a drunken red sox fan when leaving from Cape Cod.
and on the message board there was this response:
“oh shut up. u don’t believe what you hear from the media.if you do your a fool this is why they print this crap.
this all came about because of alcohol .some hispanic is gonna be deported after spending 25 to life in jail. i say save the frekin money and deport her and her family now. someone will blow her brains out down there if she drives like that
from the city of champions BOSTON of course ”
I mean wow how conceited does red sox fans have to be? I went to my first yanks v redsox game last saturday; andmost of us Yankee fans get along with them fine… this makes me more proud to be a yankee fan than anything else.
I am watching the Twins – Red Sox game. Delmon Young swung at first pitch after Dice-K loaded bases in the first. Would have swore that he could impersonate Cano or Melky on that approach. Seriously, I am looking at this twins team and I have to say they remind me abit like the Rays. Very athletic and some very good contact hitters. They also have speed. They have been hot and are in the playoff hunt. I would like to see them sweep Sox in this series — too bad it is in Fenway where the Sox are very tough.
Glad Rays lost today. Hope we can beat them tomorrow and Wednesday. Will not be easy going against Kazmir tomorrow and having Ponson pitch for us on Wednesday. Let’s hope we can win both.
re: the Giambi press release
Anyone else reading it get the impression that someone in the Yankee hierarchy is annoyed at how many Boston all-stars there are? And is a tad desperate to get another Yankee on the AL roster?
I hope Giambi makes the team. But a press release from the Yankees lobbying for votes? Seems a little beneath the team.
For me the interesting point is what happens when Bruney and Sanchez complete their rehabs, or in Bruney’s case is brought back to the Yanks. Both are on the 60 DL, thus not on the 40 man roster. Both have to be activated by 30 days from starting rehabs unless they return to the DL. Sanchez first appeared on 6/24, so must be activated by 7/23, Bruney just started on 7/4. We have options for their returns (DFA Hawkins, Traber, or Moeller, put Shelly on the 60).
But the Yanks roster is going to remain tight all the way up to next season and beyond – the problem with multiple prospects with 4 or 5 service years being Rule 5 eligible is really going to hit this offseason. A big reason why the org is being very patient with prospects like Horne, McCutcheon, Aceves, Melancon, A. Jackson, and Tabata who won’t be 5 eligible yet for 2009. At AAA JB Cox becomes eligible for the Rule 5 draft after this season. Plus that so many AA players are eligible and not on the 40 man means the Yanks could get hit hard in the AAA phase of that draft, where there’s no rule forcing the player to be returned. The entire current IF plus DL’d Vechionacci, C Piliterre, and all the pitchers except Wright(on 40), Melancon, and Kontos, with others (Coke, Gardner, Hall, OF Gonzalez) eligible for minors FA. And a number of guys at A+ and A-. And there won’t be a slew of roster spots available this offseason, with position gaps that the system isn’t ready to fill (1B, RF, a top starting pitcher). Something’s gotta give.
Confucius – I got e-mails from both Yankees.com and Mets.com (not sure why I get them from Mets.com but that’s besides the point) but both of them were saying the same thing about an hour after the teams were announced saying to vote for for Giambi/Wright. I don’t think it’s beneath the team or anything, I’m sure the Rays and White Sox are doing the same for Longoria and Dye… hell, the Red Sox might be sending out e-mails saying to vote for Longoria
I got one from the Phillies saying vote for Pat Burrel so they all do it why should the Yankees not.
I think David Wright might make the AS game because I’ve been voting for him along with Giambi a couple hundred times now
I’m glad they sent out the press release….. let’s get him in the game!
It’s unbelievable how ESPN can keep cutting to commercials during crucial parts of the game. Absolutely pathetic that they can’t even stop that from happening. Inexcusable.
It’s probably an MLB thing, then. MLB does maintain the websites.
It just wouldn’t surprise me if it came from some office of the Yankees (*cough*president*cough*). Seven Red Sox + the manager at the last All-star game at Yankee stadium? You know there are Yankee employees (*hack*Levine*hahum*) who are somewhere between disappointed and enraged about that.
bases loaded with one out for the RedSux….Fruity Pebbles pops out…ALL STAR ( cough, cough ) Varitek lazy fly out….rally nets ZERO !…Great job, beaneaters !
That’s a true sign of an all-star Don Vito…. a true all-star
I actually heard Steve Phillips say, it isn’t just about the stats. It is about how you handle a pitching staff. Um okay, but you can’t have an auto out. The rest of baseball tried to stick it to the Yankees.
Jenn – yeah he handle’s the staff very well – however, so does posada, so does molina, so does freaking Chad Moller…. it’s the major leagues, 95% of the catchers can handle the staff. In High school/College you need a catcher that’s good at handling the pitching staff because there aren’t that many around that can at that age. In the Major Leagues a catcher that can handle the staff is more then common. I don’t see the other 29 teams screaming OMGGG I wish we had FairyTek to handle our pitchers!! WAAAA!!
Jenn – sorry, should have directed that at Steve Phillips – i reread that and don’t want you to think the anger of him being there is directed at you lol
Gayle-
Nice thought on Tony Kubek!
Wiki has a nice bio on Tony
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Kubek
I know
anyone else watvhing the YES boradcast og the 1977 all star game?
Butch Wynegar is playing and of course we all remember him from the 80’s Yanks and currently an instructor with the AAA Scranton team.
On Wikipedia it says “While with the Yankees he experienced a mental breakdown and disappeared during spring training thus ending his career.”
I don’t remember this anyone know more details?? and by that I mean how did the daily newspapers run with it?

it’s never easy when you have follow in the footsteps of Rick Cerone. now THERE was a REAL Yankee ’stache.
“I hope Giambi makes the team. But a press release from the Yankees lobbying for votes? Seems a little beneath the team.”
Other teams do this sort of thing throughout the entire voting process.
Get over yourself. This ’stache thing is fun and tongue in cheek.
Also, on Hardball Times they just posted a thing that has a list of guys who fell off HARD this year…containing Livan Hernandez, Randy l’s favorite example of the kind of signing he thinks the Yanks should have made going into this season, AND Bronson Arroyo, Francesa’s favorite acquisition target.
I liked that the Yankees went after a few high school catchers over the last few years. Pitchers come into pro ball with an edge. Most Division I coaches call all pitches so handling a staff is not skillset that catchers come into pro ball with.
“I hope Giambi makes the team. But a press release from the Yankees lobbying for votes? Seems a little beneath the team.â€
It’s the way sports are going in general. Every college football team with a Heisman hopeful creates a propaganda campaign with videos, websites, ads, and the like.
Manny looks bad. He’s having trouble getting around on the fastball.
I don’t think Boston will pick up his option.
Random Thought: Celebrity Jeopardy – Show and Tell, I will show you an object and you simply tell me what the object is.
IT’S A MAN WITH A MUSTACHE!!
No Mr. Conery, I am not the object!
“Manny looks bad. He’s having trouble getting around on the fastball. I don’t think Boston will pick up his option.”
There are some things that, while they fly in the face of common sense and logic, just have to happen in this world…..
…like Manny replacing Giambi as our DH next year…
imagine that.
I hope to never see Manny in pinstripes.
Wynegar walked into the majors and was uber successful albeit in Minnesota. Two ASGs in his first two years. Playing in NY was a different story and he was also dealing with a ton of injuries. That’s why I think he’s been a great coach for SWB. Can’t think of a better person to help the kids deal with the pressure and battling through, alhtough it is a much diff. time as far as the media.

I just took a look at the Hardball Times site, to check that article on players who have fallen off the edge (whozat – thanks for the tip).
Really interesting reading. On one level, I kind of knew that players started going downhill in their early 30s, maybe more so without PEDs. But seeing it laid out in that piece really started me thinking about our own boys.
Jeter really was hitting well before Daniel Cabrera hit him on the hand, so I’m willing to chalk his performance off to that.
But what’s going on with Bobby Abreu really has me thinking. And even though Damon, Matsui, and Giambi are hitting relatively well, how much time do they have left?
We really do need to get a lot younger. Like I said, I had already realized this, but that article really drummed the message home.
I’m watching the Minnesota/Boston game, and I hope Brett Gardner is watching it too. They were talking about the art of the two strike bunt, and later in the game Casilla laid down a perfect one. I would think it could be an effective tool for Gardner. In this game, Minnesota couldn’t get anything going, Casilla gets two strikes on him, and all of a sudden drops down a decent bunt and just catches the Red Sox defense completely off-guard. Gomez did it the other night.
…like Manny replacing Giambi as our DH next year…
Wouln’t like the Sox having our draft pick though.
Fredo-
Boston only gets the draft picks if they offer arbitration. Something they wouldn’t do.
Good pont Sheik
The selection of Fairytek says more about how the players feel about AJ Pierzinski than it does about Jason. I’m not sure whose dog AJ killed, but he hasn’t been forgiven for it.
Damn it twinkies….they had a chance and nothing
Wow the twins suck! bases loaded one out! and NO RUNS!
Delmon Young – just an incredibly stupid hitter. Swung at the first pitch all four times up. Bases loaded, swings at a pitch well off the plate.
At least it’s nice to know it isn’t just the Yanks who can be frustrating.
“Delmon Young – just an incredibly stupid hitter”
He graduate with Cano?
Monroe ABwas the disaster. He’s up 2-0 in the count w/ the bases drunk and 1 out and ended up with pop to 1st
The Twins cost themselves the game by bad plate discipline and a terrible substitution by Gardenhire – putting in Monroe, who is a terrible hitter, for Kubel. I don’t care about the lefty righty thing. Kubel is a muc better hitter.
“The selection of Fairytek says more about how the players feel about AJ Pierzinski than it does about Jason. I’m not sure whose dog AJ killed, but he hasn’t been forgiven for it.”
Remember the punch to jaw from Barrett, every player lived vicariously through that. AJ is thought of an all-around ahole.
The Red Sox are a good team, no doubt, but so many teams let them riggle off the hook, it’s absurd. Twins should have won this game.
“The Red Sox are a good team, no doubt, but so many teams let them riggle off the hook, it’s absurd. Twins should have won this game.”
Cuts both ways Rconn. Red Sox should have won Saturday’s game but they let the Yankees off the hook with bad at bats.
Gomez has a gun and a half out there.
Uh-Oh look who’s getting use to starting
Wilkins De La Rosa
6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 K’s
2.26 ERA, GO/AO 4-5
Son of God went yard tonight.
It’s all about taking advantage of oppotunities. Winning teams do it, losing teams don’t. The 1996-2001 Yankees did it more often than not. It’s what we have to get back to.
“Cuts both ways Rconn. Red Sox should have won Saturday’s game but they let the Yankees off the hook with bad at bats.”
The Red Sox should not have been in that game in tne 9th. Good ABs by Drew and Lowell, but Rivera hit two batters in the same inning, which never happens.
Then Rivera dominated three bad hitters – Crisp, Varitek and Lugo. Game over.
Yeah – Jesus just does not like to be below .300. There are some serious bats coming up with Jackson, Montero, Suttle, Almonte, Laird, Deleon etc. They are a bit behind the pitching but we should start seeing an influx of guys in the next year or two. The last two years of drafts and IFAs are have really stocked the Yanks with solid, professional hitters.
Then Rivera dominated three bad hitters – Crisp, Varitek and Lugo. Game over.
Nope. Bad at bats. Varitek was up 2-0 and Mo grooved one down broadway and Varitek missed it. Strike 3 to Lugo was a heater down the middle too. Bad managing by Franona too. No way Casey should not get an AB in one of those 3 AB’s. Yanks were on the hook and the Sox let them off.
“The Red Sox are a good team, no doubt, but so many teams let them riggle off the hook, it’s absurd.”
No they aren’t.
“They are a bit behind the pitching but we should start seeing an influx of guys in the next year or two. ”
An influx is a bit of an overstatement. Ajax will most likely be ready in two years. That is the only big bat in the foreseable future. Montero will not be rushed and the rest of them are also very young. Suttle is having a nice season but he is still in Low A.
“Nope. Bad at bats. Varitek was up 2-0 and Mo grooved one down broadway and Varitek missed it. Strike 3 to Lugo was a heater down the middle too. Bad managing by Franona too. No way Casey should not get an AB in one of those 3 AB’s. Yanks were on the hook and the Sox let them off.”
The greatest closer of all time against a mediocre catcher with a fork in his back. He jammed Varitek with that pitch, (instead of last night when he sawed him off) and he overpowered two hitters (Lugo and Crisp) who you would expect him to dominate. He went right after them and they had no chance. He’s much better than they are. Sorry, that’s just a fact. And again, the Sox wouldn’t have been in the situation had Rivera not hit 2 batters. They were lucky to have the opportunity to tie or win it.
mlb update- longoria and hart lead the final vote
Alright Rconn.I get it. You insist on having it both ways. Go ahead. No use arguing with obstinance.
“Nope. Bad at bats. Varitek was up 2-0 and Mo grooved one down broadway and Varitek missed it.”
That makes no sense. Do you even look at statistics or are all hitters equal to you? You’re talking about a guy whose batting .215. When you’re a bad hitter like Varitek, missing a 2-0 pitch doesn’t qualify as a bad at bat. It qualifies as being what you are, a crummy hitter. When A-Rod misses a 2-0 pitch down the middle, THAT’S a bad at bat, not when a crappy hitter misses a pitch. If he is hitting all 2-0 pitches then why is he batting .215?
Cox is even further away from a callup after tonight’s game. Have AAA hitters caught up with the slider?
Fredo Bandito
The Red Sox let the Yankees off the hook by not being able to hit Mariano Rivera?
Yeah that makes sense.
Fredo, Bad at bats against Mariano are a trend if you haven’t noticed.
TL – I am not suggesting you will see superstars but in rough timeline fashion:
Garnder, Carson, Miranda, Curtis, Jackson, Tabata, Suttle, Snyder, Laird, Almonte, Montero, Romine, Deleon, just off the top of my head of guys stateside (except Deleon) in A or above. There are a few bats at SI and GCL from this draft that are just getting acclimated.
You also have guys with gloves like Cervelly, Pena, Corona, Vech (if he ever gets healthy and puts it together).
Granted only a handful of these will guys will make it, but the depth is now greater than at any time in the recent past.
Mariano loads the bases on Saturday by beaning two Sox batters and they still can’t bring a run in.
Why?
Bad at bats.
Let’s all get on the Giambi bandwagon when 2 months ago you were ready to crucify him. Yes kids vote for a chemically enhanced player, great role model. I suppose you will get Bonds next. LOL
I believe the Sox are still the World Champions until dethrowned and 4 1/2 games ahead of the Yanks but they aren’t a good team. That’s a ridiculous statement.
Granted only a handful of these will guys will make it, but the depth is now greater than at any time in the recent past.
Until that depth reaches AAA and AA/A+ we still have catching up to do.
“Alright Rconn.I get it. You insist on having it both ways. Go ahead. No use arguing with obstinance.”
Um, look. The Red Sox didn’t touch Mussina, Veras or Farnsworth. Then Rivera hits 2 batters – please look up the last time that happened – and he gets out 3 bad hitters. He’s Mariano-freakin Rivera! That’s what he does. Had Pedroia been up, or I don’t know, Ramirez with the bases loaded, might be a different argument.
Who would you take in a matchup of Lugo vs. Rivera, Crisp vs. Rivera or Varitek vs. Rivera? Exactly, I rest my case. They didn’t chase bad pitches, he attacked them and got them out.
Basic math is obviously not the strong suit of the Baseball Tonight Group. Just said Look at the Yankees 11 games behind the Rays in the loss column. Last I checked 42-33= 9
Makes plenty of sense Dfox. If you have the bases loaded, n outs, there is no excuse for not scoring no matter who’s pitching. Failure to do so is the very definition of letting a team off the hook. A hit is not required. On a 2-0 pitch, which was right down the happy zone, a pop up is inexcusable.
The Yanks need to get some draft picks for the next draft. It is a weak draft year but the Yanks need hitters. I know they have all these guys but the thing is, they are low in the system and hitters take a lot longer to develop unless they are absolute studs like Arod in the minors. The Yanks could use few solid college hitters and high upside high schoolers. Hopefully, some of their picks this year add to that but I dont see more than two guys up in the next three years. Montero and them are like 18 and hitters can take awhile and so he might not make it fulltime until say 22 or 23
Pat – That is why red sux fans fail to see this 26-2 90 years
Brandon – I agree. That is why I said it will be one to two years before we start seeing the hitters. I like Tabata or Jackson for a late season call up end of next year. Carson and Miranda may help be up sooner.
Still I would much rather have the pitching ahead of the hitting as the Yankees do. Easier to get position players than pitchers. Trades of vets – Damon, Matsui, Farnsworth, Mussina etc would probably bring in some position prospects. Or, the relatively high draft picks will lead to some position prospects. We are not the Brewers that are still stocked with AA power prospects, but give it another year or so.
Hey Jason,
A lot of those guys are much longer than a year or two away. A guy like Carson will never get a shot with JC and GArdner ahead of him. Have you seen him play? They are cut out of the same cloth. I think he can pay in the show but not ahead of those two and he isn’t really a kid. Think Shelley last year agewise Ajax is at least two years from playing.
Jesus Christ Fredo Corleone, what’s so difficult to understand? When you’re a .215 hitter who can’t handle the bat and has looked lost at the plate your entire career, putting the ball into the outfield against the best closer of all time is a fairly difficult task. Complain to the Red Sox for letting Varitek go up there and hit, but don’t blame a bad hitter for having a “bad” at bat. Most NL pitchers probably hit higher than .215, so that’s what you have, a guy whose the equivalent of a NL pitcher or maybe even an AL pitcher. I doubt you’d be complaining if Dice-K couldn’t get the run in from third with 1 out and the bases loaded.
“Cox is even further away from a callup after tonight’s game. Have AAA hitters caught up with the slider?”
That’s 8 earned in his last 7 2/3 IP. He’s not too far removed from the DL. Might be he’s not entirely right yet.
“I hope Giambi makes the team. But a press release from the Yankees lobbying for votes? Seems a little beneath the team.”
Why? Other teams did it in the past…..
Agreed Brandon.
I like Carson and have seen him play a bunch but can you say wrong place, wrong time. Another org. and he’s in the show. SWB has no other real hitting prospects and Ajax is the most ready prospect at AA. Tampa has no offense and Charleston is a long way from MLB.
I agree Jason.
Anyone watching this Phillies/Mets game? It’s getting a little loosey goosey…
Imagine if the Phillies actually tie things up…
“I hope Giambi makes the team. But a press release from the Yankees lobbying for votes? Seems a little beneath the team.â€
This isn’t without precedent (White Sox/ Scott Podsednik), and I see no reason for the Yanks not to do it.
Anyone watching this Phillies/Mets game? It’s getting a little loosey goosey…
Imagine if the Phillies actually tie things up…
Not happening their offense is not awake this week.
I guess Dicey K pitched much longer than we anticipated. He should probably be on the All Star team right behind Moose.
BTW how about Ryan Howard, he can’t hit for s*** w/ no one on, put runners on and he turns into Superman
who watched the bachelorette?
Hey the racist is here! How’s everything in the trailer going tonite Doris? Only you would watch reality TV.
“put runners on and he turns into Superman”
Where do the Yanks find one of those?
Ok here we go Wagner activated on my FL team, 1 2 3 Bozo !
“I guess Dicey K pitched much longer than we anticipated. He should probably be on the All Star team right behind Moose”
Both should be behind John Danks. Maybe Lester and Greinke too. Think the AL should have gone with a couple more starters and a couple less relievers. I’d dump Soria and Papelbon (even though both a quite good) for Greinke (Royal rep) and Danks.
Where do the Yanks find one of those?
PS3 ?
As far as Cox, he’s made five appearances and has looked awful. Robertson clearly passed him as a prospect. I think the pecking order will be Melancon, Robertson, and Cox.
It’s ok Billy nothing to worry about 1 run doesn’t kill you
Well this might be interesting..
Remember Wagner…Willie is already fired..no need to suck anymore..
He’s going to get the job done.
Wagner sweating a little?
not if superman has anything to say about it.
Your still OK Billy 3 run lead ! Please don’t screw this up
Yeah…I think he will get it done.
But I sure there are some Mets fans that might have stained their undies just a little right now..
Angel- please dont address me. I dont deal with your type
Ok Game Over DP and my FL team lives superior tonight.
“Robertson clearly passed him as a prospect.”
Nope. A couple weeks of performance don’t make or break your prospect status. Cox has been good, he’s had some crappy games lately. He still has the higher upside.
“who watched the bachelorette?”
Are you for real?
SA I told you he was going to do this.
Wagner sweating a little more?
Jebus Christ your still Ok get this out !
whats wrong with the bachelorette?
A basball blog and she’s trying to discuss bachelorette from the double wide!
Up to Werth.
Wow…that was interesting…but he did it!
He’s the LH Armando Benitez
Way to make Billy work there Werth. Can’t hit the strike zone and he swings 1-0?
Boston coverting Masterson to relief and bringing up Buchholtz. Guess that makes sense.
Hey you trolling piece of crap, if you’re going to impersonate me, get it right. I don’t say “Dicey” and I’m not crying about Moose.
Jeez, can’t even take a nap around here.
They said they kept Bucholtz down to reinvent his curve and he’s had excellent results. Timlin’s career has run it’s course with age apparently the main factor.
The Yankees really liked what they saw in Robertson in the Cape. He’s getting some big game experience and has looked good. Cox was a huge prospect from the time he was in high school. Robertson has flown under the radar. A 0.96 ERA last year and a 1.06 this year in significant innings speak for itself.
From the NY Times:
1)As the Yankees seek to improve their rotation, a name to remember is Dan McCutchen, who threw his second shutout in five starts Saturday for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. McCutchen has made nine starts for Scranton with a 3.36 E.R.A. …
2)Ben Broussard, the Scranton first baseman who started the season with Texas, received 535, 177 All-Star votes — more than Tampa Bay catcher Dioner Navarro, who actually made the team as a reserve.
LOL@ Mel’s fiestiness. You tell ‘em!
And apparently now its impersonating me too. *rolls eyes*
Hey wanker, if you’re going to impersonate me I can actually spell the word baseball.
Karstens was horrible again tonight. McCuthen has been better than his record has indicated and he’s had one or two bad innings during his time in AAA. Will be interesting to see what IPK does? Another good start and Cutch could get a start in NY.
mel,
It has been said before on here that when you are impersonated that puts into the “blog hall of fame”!
Hey Doris,
Why are you impersonating a dead woman? Can’t you come up with a unique name?
http://njmg.typepad.com/yankeesblog/
Bruney might impact the club by Aug. 1, when LaTroy Hawkins might finally be released.
Today, Cashman said not to expect Phil Hughes in August (putting him on a September course with Wang).
And for you Carl Pavano fans, he might impact the club in the late, late second half, but probably not as a starter.
“Hey you trolling piece of crap, if you’re going to impersonate me, get it right. I don’t say “Dicey†and I’m not crying about Moose.
Jeez, can’t even take a nap around here.”
Same guy that impersonates me. Good luck getting Pete to ban the a$$.
argh…I used [ and ] instead of
Does it Ray? Thats a piece of infamy I can live without, lol.
Its not even very good at impersonating us.
Anyone who knows me, know that I loathe use of the word tonite instead of tonight.
im honoring her… she was my aunt (fathers sister)
“Angel, dont you have a sink to fix in apartment 4F?”
Cat fight!
and everyone knows Doris (may god rest her soul) was a mets fan
ray-
You have to try really hard to impersonate my cheerful demeanor. Otherwise it really stands out.
But that was me complaining. I said I was cheerful, doesn’t mean I’m always nice.
true fact: jerome from the bronx is actually related to suzyn waldman
“And for you Carl Pavano fans, he might impact the club in the late, late second half, but probably not as a starter.”
Spare us the Pavano updates. He’s never pitching again for the Yankees.
Angel,
Yeah, I caught that right away.
That would be a cyber cat fight with no tops coming off.(unfortunately)
I suppose we should be flattered, only its poor spelling and general lack of effort in its impersonation being accurate, leave me decidedly unflattered.
I would put money that it is probably the V dude doing it to you with the impersonations thing. The guy/girl is a hack and he/she is probably trying to get peoples attentions. No one quite whines like him/her.
Astoria John
I remember that Butch Wynegar was placed on the RESTRICTED LIST by the Yankees, back in 1982 or 1983.
It was probably from the breakdown.
jerome from the bronx is actually related to suzyn waldman
I guess that explains his stupidity..
Spare us the Pavano updates. He’s never pitching again for the Yankees.
Ya never know..we just might see “Mr. Healthy”
We should have had Dice K. Another misstep by this front office in a pitching decision. I really hope not getting Inoa won’t be a mistake but it looks like it will be.
//They said they kept Bucholtz down to reinvent his curve and he’s had excellent results.//
I don’t know where you got that idea. His curve and changeup have always been stellar. He went to Pawtucket to work on his fastball command.
And why can’t anyone spell his name? It’s Buchholz. One “C” – two “Hs” – no “T.” It’s not that difficult.
Hey Anthony Claggett (The other guy in the Sheff deal)
Last 22 IP in AA 0.82 ERA
Kuroda has a perfect game going thru 6 for LA.
“I would put money that it is probably the V dude doing it to you with the impersonations thing. The guy/girl is a hack and he/she is probably trying to get peoples attentions. No one quite whines like him/her.”
Hi, troll. You aren’t as bright as you think you are.
“Ya never know..we just might see “Mr. Healthy—
Yeah. Does anyone know if they have a Darwin Awards event at the 2008 Olympics?
LOL Angel
If you all commit to vote for the ‘Stache 20 times each I think we could send Jason to the all-star game and watch him win the home run derby
H Ran,
Boston got Dice K by blowing everyone out of the water with their ridiculous bid.
It would have cost $6M to get Inoa by the time they were done playing their games.
Karstens and Cox both bad days at AAA
Sure, Real V whatever. I would put money that it is you being Angel and mel and whoever else. You should get a life and grow up.
6 mill for Inoa? If he turns out to be Felix Hernandez isn’t that a bargain? Isn’t 6 mill a bargain for a top 10 pick?
Isn’t 100 mill for 7 years of an in his prime starter from Japan worth it? Carlos Silva got 12 mill a yr. You are going to see mid range pitchers get 15 next November.
Shouldn’t we be using our vast financial resources?
Why not take advantage of what we have?
I wonder if spiderwick can actually afford to be talking like he is going to put his money where his mouth is.
I can’t imagine he gets much of an allowance from his parents.
“Sure, Real V whatever. I would put money that it is you being Angel and mel and whoever else. You should get a life and grow up.”
Pot, kettle, black, and all that jazz.
Wow, great play by DeWitt to save that.
I was just about to ask if Vin Scully has mentioned the perfect game yet but he did as I was typing. Had he mentioned it before?
The only Pavano updates I need our Pete jokes about his rehab progress.
“6 mill for Inoa? If he turns out to be Felix Hernandez isn’t that a bargain? Isn’t 6 mill a bargain for a top 10 pick?

Prime starter? Dice-K is playing with -fire- with the BBs. No pitcher succeeds in the long term with that pitching style. And he has already shown that his health is less than 100%. I wanted the Yankees to go after them, but the Sawx overpaid. Not much you can do on that front.
And the Inoa sweepstakes, I was upset they didn’t land him, but it looks like the ‘bidding’ was rigged. Yankees had him, then they didn’t. When you end up forced to bid against yourself, good things don’t happen.
And is that Joyce DeWitt’s son?
V really fights with himself. It’s kinda funny. Jekyl and Hyde.
Nick, why did you jinx it?
The statement from Madonna being talked about on sportscenter…
Just weird…
Predictable. Impersonate several people, and then blame someone else for doing them all.
It needs a new M.O.
The Real V (not the troll):
Is there really a need to copy and paste everything I say?
Have your own thought.
Kuroda is perfect thru 7.
Perfect game going.
Just go away,troll.
I saw that when I was channel surfing, SA.
I thought I was on E! channel by mistake. They may as well call themselves E!SPN now.
“Predictable. Impersonate several people, and then blame someone else for doing them all.
It needs a new M.O.”
Agreed.
If Vin Scully can mention it, I can mention it!
Through 7 the perfecto continues…
Check out the Dodger game.
Ugh.. I forgot that one one thing I didn’t like about watching West Coast channel broadcasts. All the Jack in the Box commercials.
The Madonna thing is news.
Yeah Vinnie just mentioned Perfecto ……
Jack In The Box makes great burgers. Good fries too.
u can say perfect game n not jinx
n its donzo
Oh no, Vin Scully jinxed it. Bad Vin, bad.
Damn you, Texeira, lol.
Vin Scully, what a great broadcaster.
Oh darn!
There is goes..
**is=it
I can’t type today..
Future Yankee Texeria lines a 2 strike double,,,,,Vinnie you know better…
The food IS good. I just have a thing about clowns, lol.
“Jack In The Box makes great burgers. Good fries too.”
Yo, fake V – there are no Jack In The Boxes out east. Where you from?
I’ll vote for Giambi if he goes for a full-blown Rollie Fingers handlebar stache.
Platinum tips could be a nice touch.
Ahhh ok maybe not the platinum tips.
Unless he actually wears that gold thong of course.
OK now THAT starting to sound like a look someone would expect to see in the Boston clubhouse.
Right before Youk & Pedo-roia hop in the shower.
Maybe we need an overhaul of the scouting system. We spend money on Igawa but not Kuroda? We don’t even glance at Fukodome even after how well Matsui turned out and the fact that we got almost nothing in terms of position players in the high minors? Cashman has to take responsibility for Igawa which is unfortunate but that goes with the job.
Of course my friend tells me about the perfection and the first batter I see drills it down the right field line.
What’s the record for perfect games managed? I believe this would have been 3 for Torre.
You can’t no-hit/pitch a perfect game against a team like Atlanta. Too many good hitters, especially Chipper Jones.
Texiera is not coming here
Stupid Teixeira.
Meanwhile, check out this absolutely hysterical ripping of that terrible pice of crap writer Bill Plaschke. It is utter brilliance. His understanding of baseball is zilch. What is even more worrisome is that the Dodger GM is obviously a clueless moron.
http://www.firejoemorgan.com/2008/07/mike-scioscia-exhales-carbon-dioxide.html
There used to be a Jack in Queens…Used to go there in 1971
I did my bit and cast quite a few votes for Giambi earlier. I’m going to do some each night until voting ends.
We don’t need Texeira. Well, we could use him but that will not be a priority. We need a big time power hitting Right Fielder in 2009. We have too many 1b types who may need to man the position in a few years. They can’t invest 20 mill a yr in Texeira. No matter how good he is. But they do need to get younger and more athletic. Maybe thru trades.
I’m out for the night, so if anyone posts as me after this post until tomorrow evening, it won’t be really me.
DFox – the last perfect game was against Atlanta… not the same team obviously.. but still the Braves… Big Unit
You actually read Plaschke?
You actually take anyone that appears on Around the Horn seriously?
The picture of Giambi on the new ballot is sans ’stache.
Conspiracy?
Funny V!
yanks website has pettite as todays starter..true or not? it had ponson just a few hours ago
JoeT 28 in 09, good point, but in a game like tonight, when there’s a load of high-average hitters, especially one batting in the .380’s the odds are slim to none.
Angel July 8th, 2008 at 12:02 am
I’m out for the night, so if anyone posts as me after this post until tomorrow evening, it won’t be really me.
Do you own the name “Angel”? I don’t get it.
Ralphie, for a few days we’ve been saying Pettitte tomorrow, Pontoon on Wednesday.
Should every GM who doesn’t work for the Dodgers be fired for not getting Kuroda?
Just voted for stache.
ahh.. thanks nick mb
Yanks don’t need a Gold Glove 1B, Who is a 40HR switch hitter, bats .300 and is 27 years old…..Say What ???
I guess I should feel special being impersonated. I’m over it. I don’t think Cash should be fired for not getting Kuroda. He should be fired for Igawa, Pavano, not trading for Santana, no lefty in pen, having to subject us to watching Ponson pitch, etc.
What do the Yanks do with Jeter when he can’t play SS anymore? Where does Posada play? Maybe A-Rod in 5 years. A 7 year deal for a 1b is logjam. Or haven’t you seen this with Giambi the past 7 years.
There are a lot of trolls here. I think their all one person changing names.
Cashman is doing a great job. Made playoffs how many years? Rebuilt the farm??
The Yankees won’t look at Tex in the offseason, but that doesn’t make it right. He’s a helluva ballplayer and the Yankees need to get younger offensively.
Again Abreu should not be resigned, Giambi won’t be back, Jeter and Posada are showing signs of decline and Damon and Matsui are injury concerns, and will be in their mid-30s.
The tezm MUST get younger offensively. Power hitting first basemen who are also gold-glove caliber defenders don’t grow on trees.
The whole, “We don’t need Tex” senitment is nonsense. We shouldn’t flatter ourselves.
Who the hell is going to play first? Shelly Duncan? Wilson Betemit? Please.
I understand going after C.C., obviously, but the Yankees should test the waters on Tex.
Come on!
The K Man is a bona fide all star!
A triple A all star.
“We don’t even glance at Fukodome even after how well Matsui turned out and the fact that we got almost nothing in terms of position players in the high minors?”
Where, exactly, would he have played on this team? Why would he have signed here? How do you know they didn’t glance? Because WE didn’t hear about it? Ridiculous.
The Yanks are not going to commit 7 years to a 1b. They made that mistake once with Giambi. And Tex will get 7 years.
You can get younger and more athletic thru trades. If this system is as good as all the scouts say it is, it shouldn’t be a problem. They can move some pitching for an outfielder or 1b.
“The tezm MUST get younger offensively. Power hitting first basemen who are also gold-glove caliber defenders don’t grow on trees.”
And signing big name free agents is the way to do it?
Be careful with Tex. His numbers were inflated by playing in Arlington for years. He’s good. He’s not phenomenal. Worth having until he’s 36? He’ll be 29 next year.
Fukodome could have played CF couldn’t he?? Or played left and Damon CF. And next year he could side over to RF if Bobby A leaves.
In what fantasy world are you living in that made Melky the guaranteed centerfielder for years to come?
Are you kidding me?
Melky will be an all star soon. Count on it.
No I don’t read Plachke. He is terrible. I read the guys that rip Plashcke, as well as all other bad sports journalism apart – firejoemorgan.com. Look up Michael Kay in there search function. He has had some gems in the Idiot Department, like comparing trivial things to heinous war crimes.
A 1B player of that level of talent comes along once a generation, as he’ll eclipse all of Eddie Murray’s numbers….Yanks make a big move for him, as well as CC…Abreu is gone…Texeria is the final piece for the infield…..Jeter will find himself in LF in a few years….
Jeter won’t move from SS. Count on it.
“Fukodome could have played CF couldn’t he??”
No.
“Or played left and Damon CF.”
Damon cannot physically play CF regularly.
You’re also ignoring that Fukudome had to WANT to come here. You try selling a free agent on coming to a team with a full outfield.
“A 1B player of that level of talent comes along once a generation,”
Aaaaaaaaand now this has just gotten ridiculous.
Errr, I understand the need to get younger, but exactly how are the Yankees going to make all these trades to get SITM (Studs in the Making) unless they give up good talent, which means the Yankees lose out on pitching.
The Yankees are more likely to sign a FA than go with trades.
With all the dead weight coming off the payroll why can’t we have Tex and CC?
Once in a generation? More like once in a lifetime. We will never see another like Tex.
I’m not saying sign Fukodome. I said look into it. Explore it. Something we haven’t done in a while. You always have to get better. Improve. Get versatile. After last season’s loss we failed to do that. We are paying the price now.
I really don’t understand looking towards 2009 when the team has this much talent on it. Why bother resigning Posada then? Take the 2 picks for him. There seems to be a disconnect in leadership. The team hasn’t been given all the pieces they need to win. Exhibit A is Ponson starting games.
Fukudome could have played CF til Austin Jackson was ready.
But obviously, they think Melky has a Bernie type bat. Which is crazy.
Really. Why not sign both CC and Tex and worry about 7 years down the line later? These are the Yanks! They print money. They don’t have albatross contracts. They survived Pavano and Igawa. Texeira is PERFECT for this team and lineup.
Nick-
Disagree on Tex.
Buddy-
I was just trying to make Tex feel good in case he’s reading Lohud tonight after the game in LA. Maybe he isn’t really a once-in-a-lifetime first baseman.
Sorry Tex.
“I said look into it.”
Again…you have no idea whether they did or not. Teams do PLENTY of things that we never hear about. It’s absurd to get cranky about things you think didn’t happen when we’re so very, very far removed from sources of information.
“Exhibit A is Ponson starting games.”
After Wang, Hughes, Kennedy, Horne and Karstens all got hurt.
“and worry about 7 years down the line later? ”
Because that thought process is what put us in this position now.
Tex is very good, but he has nothing on Pujols.
Whozat, A generation constiutes 20 years , tell me of a 1B with the package that he has since Eddie Murray……Mattingly , not a SW hitter, Will Clark, not there, Kieth Hernandez , that’s a joke,,,,So Whozat, tell me,,,,I;ll give you some time to reseach it, although I thought you may have had a better grasp of the game…..Texeria has accomplished an awful lot in a short time….
“tell me of a 1B with the package that he has since Eddie Murray”
Pujols.
He doesn’t switch hit, but who cares?
No problem Nick! See you at the new Yankee stadium manning first base for the Yanks in 2009!
I just gave you the guy – Albert Pujols. He is the best overall first baseman of the last twenty years.
Tex, great job breaking that kid’s heart tonight. Good luck in ‘09, wherever you are.
Albert Pujols is clearly the best 1B of the last 20 years easily!
Prince Fielder is twice the first baseman that Tex is.
Even as a Vegan!
Jeter won’t move from SS. Count on it.
You know we could push him.
You guys are either high, or just not doing some research….
The research shows that Albert Pujols is clearly superior to Mark Teixeira. Make your case for Tex over A-Poo is you really believe Tex is better.
PAT M I know there is no way your telling us Texeira is even in the same breath of Albert Pujols, Please tell me you don’t believe that.
Let me re-state my point….Albert Pujols NOW THAT HE’S BEEN PLAYING 1B for the past 3 years or so, has been in the league longer by 3 years or so,,,,However my main point is that he’s a switch hitter, GOLD GLOVE 1B, AND he’s a free agent……All Star Switch hitters are gold, much like Left hand starters that are Cy Young caliber….Bottom line, he fills a void on many fronts for the Yankees…He bats 3rd, in front of A-Rod…Do you think his numbers improve undeer those situation…..
There was a report on ESPN.com or MLB.com, that Texas and at least one other team has requested that baseball investigate the Inoa signing for improprieties. I read it a few hours ago. I’ll try to relocate it.
Pujols career stats: 5066 plate appearances, .323/423/.620 batting line, 300 HR, 892 Runs, 909 RBIs, 169 OPS+, 650 BB, 480 K, 140 IBB, 9.7 RC/G, 7.01 RFg
Teixeira career stats: 3629 plate Appearances, .285/.372/.533 batting line, 186 HR, 514 Runs, 621 RBIs, 131 OPS+, 400 BB, 660 K, 55 IBB, 7.2 RC/G, 8.97 RFg
So Albert Pujols pretty much destroy Teixeira in every category listed above, even the unimportant ones like K’s. The difference in batting average and on-base and slugging percentages is immense. And if you happen to be a traditional fan of HRs and RBIs, he kills him in R/PA and HR/PA and RBI/PA as well, which you can calculate on your own. Teixeira has him beat in Range Factor, but Pujols is still far above league average in that stat. And it doesn’t nearly make up for the fact that Pujols kills Mark in every other stat. I mean really just look at the OPS+. There is no question who is better. You must have been the one who was high when you suggested Teixeira is better.
Pujols is also a gold glove first baseman…
Did they change the pitcher for tomorrow?
Looks like Kazmir vs. Pettitte.
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/probable_pitchers.jsp?c_id=nyy
What the heck is your obsession with the guy being a switch hitter as some huge advantage?
Pujols career vs LHP: .345/.448/.643
Pujols career vs RHP: .329/.415/.613
Teixeira career vs LHP: .303/.385/.538
Teixeira career vs RHP: .277/.366/.532
Pujols, batting from the same side, is much much much better than Mark Teixeira batting from either side. it’s not even close. That completely nullifies his “switch-hitting value” when comparing him to Pujols.
The bottom line is that Teixeira is very good. But Pujols will go down as one of the greatest hitters of all-time. You are clearly fighting a losing battle here.
Teixeira has Chipper Jones batting in front of him and McCann batting behind him right now. That is a pretty darn ideal spot to be in, yet he hasn’t having a special season by any means. So plugging him in front of ARod isn’t going to change him into Superman.
Given the three year head start does make the career numbers unjust…..My point is for the evening is that he’s a switch hitter, and he’s a free agent…..Eddie Murray was the last player with that pedigree……
Nobody is going to argue that Teixeira isn’t a valuable guy to have on the team. But trying to say he is better than Pujols is absurd.
It doesn’t matter if he is a switch hitter just read his splits he’s not better than Albert Pujols in anyway.
Like Whozat said
Pujols career vs LHP: .345/.448/.643
Pujols career vs RHP: .329/.415/.613
Teixeira career vs LHP: .303/.385/.538
Teixeira career vs RHP: .277/.366/.532
This season defensively
1B Teixeira
864 TC, 804 PO, 58 A, 2 E, 75 DP, 10.17 RFg, .998 FPCT
1B Pujols
731 TC, 672 PO, 58 A, 1 E, 50 DP, 10.82 RFg, .999 FPCT
they are just about the same defensively.
Can we get this Pujols kid for 2009?
unfortunately he’s signed till 2011 Nick
When is Pujos eligible for free agency ???? Playing in the NL does favor him, however I never came out and said either was better than the other,,,,,Opportunity favors Texeria, besides it is early in their carreres, although Albert has a three year headstart……THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY THAT THE Yanks will not pass on…..A 500 hr hitting Switch hitting 1B……THAT’S MY CASE GENTLEMEN….
No. Your statement was “tell me of a 1B with the package that he has since Eddie Murray”
And we did tell you one. Albert Pujols.
Giambi’s no better than Bonds. Both are juicers who should stay away from the All-Star game.
