That’s CC as in “Cashman Calling”

Peter Abraham
July
7

C.C. Sabathia told the Milwaukee media today that he wants to be known as CC Sabathia. No periods.

Just to get ready for next season, I better start practicing.

“After CC Sabathia threw eight scoreless innings, Mariano Rivera finished the game for his 30th save as the Yankees built their lead to 10 games. “That CC is great,” Yankees player/manager Alex Rodriguez said. “CC wanted to finish the game but he needed the break. CC will be huge for us in the playoffs.”

OK, all set.

LOL, you’re very funny today Pete.

  2. Stormrider6

Player/manager, eh? Would he be managing the Yankees, or Madonna’s career?

  3. Al from BK

Lord willing I know that CC wants to be a Yankee I can feel it Cashman has to break that piggy bank though and I hope he does.

  4. C C be my name

Now where can I get some candy bars in this place?

  5. James

Does anyone really want to pay a fat pitcher with a career 8.61 ERA and 1.74 whip at yankee stadium 20 million per?

  6. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

CAN I GET AN OPINION HERE !

Anybody think we add a RHB in Miguel Olivo ? I mean he stops the running game as good as Molina

    Miguel Olivo
    7.22 RFg, .990 FPCT
    9 SB 9 CS

    Jose Molina
    7.99 RFg, .995 FPCT
    25 SB 24 CS

I mean Posada isn’t a sure bet to finish the season healthy and Olivo’s bat exceeds Moellers, or we could do a 180 and go after Ronny Paulino who has upside catching and a good bat.

.410/.465/.949 in AAA right now seems to have fell off from Pittsburgh’s valueable assets list.

  7. TL

Pete get a hobby. Go see Hancock:) Enjoy the offday.

  8. Peter Rabbit

    You’re crazy Pete, absolutely NUTS!

  9. Moe

I think the Brewers gave up too much for CC, it sounds simmilar to the bartolo colon trade from the expos to the indians, look at the players the indians got, this LaPorta is a keeper!

  10. TL

Many organizations thought LaPorta was a stretch at No. 7 overall last year. Be interesting to see how he does apart from Mat Gamel.

  11. Tripp

    Slow Day?

  12. whozat

“I think the Brewers gave up too much for CC”

They’re going all-in. This move is about this year. They think they have a shot, and they’re going to do whatever it takes to get to the series. For a team like that that’s not going to put up a contender every single year…they have to go all in when the cards look good. And they do.

  13. al arodien

you know when a-rod will manage a team about the same time i make my a mlb team! come one he will never be a good manager ! period! you know fom the current yankees i could see molina, possada ,(dont laugh) giambi, mariano as futrue managers.

  14. Central CT Yankee

One thought on AROD divorce and that’s it for me: Is it possible that AROD knows that the second child is not his? I mean he missed the birth and has seen very little of her. Just a thought…

  15. whozat

“Anybody think we add a RHB in Miguel Olivo ? I mean he stops the running game as good as Molina ”

What would be the point? Are you trying to upgrade at backup catcher? This guy’s not any good either.

  16. SJ44

Way to cherrypick those stats. Another example of misusing stats.

He’s the #1 off-season target for the Yankees.

Its pitching, not a bodybuilding contest.

The guy is a stud and would look great in a rotation with Wang, Chamberlain, Pettitte or Moose (whomever they offer to come back), and whomever among the younger guys wins the 5th spot in the rotation.

Would give you a chance to win every day if they trotted out a rotation like that in 2009.

  17. jimmy1138

Well, the Brewers should ask the Mets, Tigers and Mariners how well their blockbuster trades worked…

  18. raymagnetic ®™

“I think the Brewers gave up too much for CC, it sounds simmilar to the bartolo colon trade from the expos to the indians, look at the players the indians got, this LaPorta is a keeper!”

The Brewers farm system is loaded with position players. They had 7 early picks this year I believe which I’m sure helped to mitigate the loss of the prospects sent to Cleveland.

It was a calculated risk and it might pay off in a ring for the Brew Crew.

As they say, “flags fly forever”.

  19. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

LaPorta is a stud I was hoping in the offseason we would go after him. Ehh great deal for Cleveland on LaPorta alone.

A-Rod’s relationship with Madonna was “an affair of the heart” but wasn’t “sexual infidelity,” Cynthia’s attorney, Earle Lilly, told People.com today.

But he called Rodriguez’s relationship with the pop star “the last straw” in the marriage.

Cynthia sprinted from A-Rod and winged her way to the Paris home of rocker Lenny Kravitz, who said she came to France to escape the media frenzy in New York. The singer denied anything more was going on between them.

Cynthia Rodriguez’s lawyer, Maurice Kutner, declined to elaborate on the filing, which does not mention Madonna or any other alleged paramours by name.

“Cynthia has made it very clear to me that she wants to take the high road and protect her children and herself. There’s no vindictiveness here,” Kutner said. “She wants to resolve the issues between Alex and herself in an amicable fashion.”

Alex stay waaaaaaaaay away from this woman. :?

  20. Matt

The interesting twist in the Sabathia deal would be if the Indians went out and re-signed him. They would actually win on that deal bc they got prospects and the pitcher. They will still be players in his free agency, they did make an offer to him to try to keep him

  21. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

What would be the point? Are you trying to upgrade at backup catcher?

Yes. And he stops the running game and has some offense at his position.

  22. Lambchop Louie

Give me Xavier Nady and his righthanded bat and Damaso Marte and his lefthanded arm and I’m ready to go to war.
Throw in a good 4-5 starter that eats innings and I’m ready to declare victory.

  23. xryanx

Yeah, I can see Cashman now:

“The years and money just didn’t make much sense for us. We are very confident with Wang, Pettitte, Joba, Hughes, and Moose going into the first year in the new stadium.”

    Cashman is an idiot.

  24. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Give me Xavier Nady and his righthanded bat and Damaso Marte and his lefthanded arm and I’m ready to go to war.

    Too expensive.

  25. SJ44

    Olivo,

I answered your question re: Olivo in the other thread.

The pitchers in FL hated pitching to him last year. His numbers are a bit of an anomoly this year. He isn’t known as a good catch and throw guy at all.

I think he was also near or at the top in the NL in PB last year.

Not a very good defensive catcher with a so so bat. Occasional pop and that’s about it.

  26. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

    Brandon,

The pitchers in FL hated pitching to Olivo last year. He’s got a bad rep on working with pitchers and this years throwing numbers are an anomoly. He isn’t known as being a good catch and throw guy.

SJ thanks I didn’t know that, it surprising he is throwing runners out at a 50 % rate.

  27. Moe

This just in : A-rod is moving in to Jeter today, 2 hottest bachlors in town, Jerer releaed a statement asking the chicks to take it easy on A-rod for a while.

  28. SJ44

That trade is good for both teams.

LaPorta is a stud who will help the Indians and is cost controlled.

When CC bolts at the end of the year, the Brewers get 2 draft picks to replenish an already loaded farm system.

When Sheets leaves, they get 2 more picks.

Their AA team has more high end prospects on it than any team in minor league baseball this year.

This is a good trade for both teams. The way trades should be.

  29. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

SJ what about Ronny Paulino what can you tell me about him ?

  30. Alan

The Brewers better hope that Sabathia secures them a wild card berth or they look like dummies over the winter.

  31. Tim N.

    You mean like ee cummings?

    (google if necessary)

  32. TL

Olivo’s D is why he never stuck in the Windy city.

  33. number8

quick question about the olympics. i was just on the u.s. olympic committee website reading up on the u.s. baseball team. the roster they have listed there includes mlb players (including our boy farnsy). no mlb players will play in the olympics right?

  34. SJ44

Good defensive catcher, not a good hitter.

I don’t see the Yankees doing anything about their catching situation the rest of the season. Its not a need.

They will slot Posada in against non-running teams, use Molina a lot, with a sprinkling of Moeller thrown in. That’s good enough. Especially with the way Molina shuts down a running game.

Of all the issues with the team, that’s down on the list.

They need another bat, maybe 2 if Damon’s injury is longer term that originally thought, a LH arm out of the ‘pen, and another starter.

I think all of those issues take priority over catcher right now.

Will the doormen and security people at Trump Tower be able to handle the flood of groupies and hotties ready to pounce on Alex & the Captain if they’re both holed up at the same digs ?

  36. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

SJ I’m worried about about Jose wearing down this season and Jorge having big trouble vs the running game.

  37. SJ44

Even if the Brewers don’t make the playoffs, its good for them. It shows their fans they aren’t afraid to make a big move to try and win.

That never hurts season tickets sales for next season. It will also give them a ticket bump for the rest of this season. Especially on nights CC pitches at home.

  38. SJ44

    Brandon,

With 3 guys on the roster, they can guard against that. They won’t trade for a catcher unless Molina gets hurt. Its not a priority given the other issues with the team right now.

  39. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Beningo wants to curse out Johan you can see it through his veins

  40. Rickshaw

There goes SJ44 again. Reading Buster Olney and making like he’s an expert on everyone’s prospects.

    Brandon,

I know but it is a priority. Although I get LH relieving is the need.

    Cashman is an idiot.”

Right on. Cashman hasn’t done a thing to improve the starting pitching. Sorry. I don’t count the Kei Man.

  43. retire #51

true, however catcher could be an issue in the future. But i agree there is no need to deal with it this year.

  44. TL

It’s a move you have to make if you are the Brewers. You make the playoffs and a team has to face CC and Sheets in a shorts series. They still have Gamel in AA. They need a bat to fill in and they have two vets in AAA in Laynce Nix and Tony Gwynn.

  45. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Humberto another good relief appearance in GCL

  46. raymagnetic ®™

“Right on. Cashman hasn’t done a thing to improve the starting pitching. Sorry. I don’t count the Kei Man.”

What should he have done? Who should he have signed that would have made sense?

He’s also done multiple trades to try to improve the staff. They haven’t worked out but he’s tried.

  47. Wave Your Hat

It seems obvious to me that if the Yanks need someone other than Posada and Molina at catcher this year for any significant period of time, the Yanks aren’t making the playoffs. In fact, if Posada can’t catch 75% to 80% of the remaining games we won’t make the playoffs. So I don’t think it much matters trying to improve the number three catcher.

My second grumpy comment is that everyone seems very complacent about the Yanks signing CC in the off-season. I think without him the Yanks won’t having the horses in the starting rotation next year to make the playoffs. Unfortunately, many ML teams are flush with cash so we may not be the winning bidder.

    Oh well.

  48. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

    Brian Bruney
    1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
    3.00 ERA, GO/AO 1-1

    Humberto Sanchez
    1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
    1.93 ERA, GO/AO 1-1

  49. melky Jr.

what about dice-k? he would’ve made sense. oh wait, cashman slept on that deal just like he slept on that prospect inoa or w/e and the A’s swept him from under the rug.

  50. mel

I wish that Cleveland would cc us one just like Sabathia.

  51. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

SJ I’d also get SF on the phone and try to go after Erick Threets as a project and get an Alex Hinsaw for a B position prospect. Since the price will be low.

  52. Victor the Predictor

I see Humberto Sanchez, Mark Melancon, Jose Veras, and J.B. Cox as important pieces of the 2009 Yankee bullpen. A good situational lefthander just sweetens the mix.

  53. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

I wish that Cleveland would cc us one just like Sabathia.

Mel Cliff Lee or Rafy Perez ?

  54. Doris From Rego Park

  55. E-Dog

How the team doesn’t have a lefty in the pen I’ll never know. Since Stanton left it has been a black hole.

  56. E-Dog

    Erick Threets is beyond terrible.

He is exactly what the Yankees don’t need.

A non strikeout pitcher who walks too many guys.

Just because a lefty throws hard doesn’t make him talented or any good.

  57. mel

    Brandon,

Cliff Lee will do. Perez is down this year and contrary to the belief of many, the bullpen’s not a problem.

  58. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

He’s been throwing better than Traber his last few starts.

  59. E-Dog

Saying anyone is better than Traber doesn’t make them any good either.

  60. Mitch

    Erick Threets = Sean Henn

We dodged one bullet, let’s not do it again …

  61. Skippy

I appreciate a fellow who puts thought into punctuation.

  62. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

    Erick Threets is beyond terrible.

He’s been throwing better than Traber his last few outtings in AAA * I’m inclined to take him as a project, it wasn’t that long ago Matt Thornton sported a
9.43 H9, 4.15 BB9 look at him now for the White Sox

  63. E-Dog

“He’s also done multiple trades to try to improve the staff. They haven’t worked out but he’s tried.”

Because he’s “tried” he should get a medal???

We should all forget criticizing him because he’s tried? He should get a pass because all the pitchers he’s brought in have stunk?

Sorry. That isn’t how it works. This is a team with a supposedly deep system. They shouldn’t have to be relying on the likes of Rasner and Ponson to start games. Those prospects should have been packaged for front line pitchers when they had the chance.

Would it have killed him to sign a big time pitcher like Dice K? How about a flier on a Lohse? You have all these resources for a reason.

He wants to be Billy Beane for some reason.

  64. Doreen

Not to be confused with CC Rider? (I say, C, CC Rider)

  65. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Brandon: Not only is Jose Molina excellent at shutting down the running game and calling games that Mussina or whomever throw, he’s also tough as nails.

Not many can take a fastball straight to the Netherlands and not just live to tell the tale, but stay in the game as well.

  66. raymagnetic ®™

Brandon is to Threets as Randy l. is to Livan Hernandez.

  67. Andrew

Damaso Marte is going to cost even more in a trade now that Capps is out for a while in Pitt-town. I think Ron Mahay out of K.C., or John Grabow (Pittsburgh’s other lefty) might make more sense if the price is right–the Yankees were interested in him in the offseason.

I just hope Cashman isn’t infatuated with Brian Fuentes–if there is going to be a winner of the Eric Gagne Memorial Terrible Reliever Acquisition of the 2008 deadline, it will be Fuentes. That guy has Jay Witasick written all over him.

Xavier Nady would be nice, especially if Matsui is out for the year. Also, what about head-case Jose Guillen? He is readily available in K.C.–but also certifiably insane.

  68. David NY

    The Henn-Threets analogy is perfect.

It should end all discussion of Threets.

  69. mel

    Brandon,

Thanks for the heads up about Humberto.

Looks like he gave up one run in his first game and nothing since. Seems to be going every 3 days like clockwork.

Will they bump him anytime soon?

  70. xryanx

what would i like cashman to do about the pitching? he went into this season with four question marks (mussina, hughes, kennedy, and joba). his back up plans in the event that those guys were garbage were jeff karstens (scrub), darrel rasner (#5 at best), kei igawa (scrub), and pray for rain. i am tired of people saying ‘ya can’t prepare for 3/5ths of the starting rotation to go down!’. coming into this season, 3/5ths of the rotation was a question mark! no one expected mussina to pitch well. so cashman let guys like colon and lohse hook onto other teams and in the past he let Lilly go to Chicago only to have to go out and sign Igawa. hes a fool and i am going to be so pissed when Hank and Hal bring him back only for him to let Sabathia and Teixeria go to another team while we plug our holes with probably someone like Juan Miranda.

  71. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Brandon is to Threets as Randy l. is to Livan Hernandez.

    As raymagnetic is to PMS

  72. raymagnetic ®™

Should have put it this way.

    Brandon:Threets::Randy l.:Livan Hernandez.

    That’s better.

  73. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

    The Henn-Threets analogy is perfect.

It should end all discussion of Threets.

I’d compare him more to a Matt Thornton or Arthur Rhodes

  74. Gar Gar

Brandon has a man crush on Threets. Who was DFA’d by the Giants. You miss Sean Henn or something?

  75. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

I hated Sean Henn there wasn’t a sack on him ever when he took that mound, left pitches up all the time. GW hit waiting to happen.

  76. mel

    E-Dog,

The Yankees bid for Dice-K. The Red Sox just offered the moon. Bad example.

And he’s trying to bring down the costs because the Tampa faction strapped the team with some bad deals.

It’s embarrassing to have spent over a billion dollars, $210M this year along, and have nothing to show for it.

  77. Brian

    Hey Pete-

Did you see this ESPN article? Sounds like they copied your open letter word for word.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=3471345

  78. mel

    Brandon,

Cut it out! PMS only happens once a month, not once a day. The chronic complainers on this site are ALL men.

  79. Miles Roche

I hope Cashman doesn’t bring in Sabathia who – like Trevor Hoffmann – hasn’t won a big game to save his life. . .

  80. xryanx

you’re right miles. lets pass on postseason choker CC Sabathia and bring in world series hero Jeff Weaver. while we’re at it we could cut A-Rod to bring back Boone and trade Joba for El Duque. those guys know how to win! /sarcasm

  81. bdog375

It seems there is a double standard with Cashman. The same people hate him for the free agent signings that occurred before he had total control are roasting him for not making similar moves right now to strengthen the team.

Nothing is worse than sitting on the fence. That is what would happen if he talked about rebuilding and then sold the farm to make the playoffs in a year when our team is not even THAT good.

New rule should be that if you complained about the Pavano’s, Brown’s, and even the Giambi’s, you should not complain about the lack of Santana’s, Sabathia’s, or Texeria’s.

  82. Yankee Trader

Marte has a club option for 6M in 2009. Pirates will keep him, decline the club option, offer him arbitration which he’ll decline and he’ll become a FA, with the Pirates getting draft picks. Lefties have a .261 BA against Marte.

Lefties batting .174 against Fuentes, .236 against Mahay, .208 against Edwar Ramirez. Mahay has 4M due 2009.Right now our bullpen is doing the job.

Injuries are hurting us as well as poor contact hitting with RISP.

My choice would be trading for Matt Holiday, a Boras client, who Colorado might very well trade, knowing that they can’t resign him.

  83. jason

Watch out for the last pitcher who finished out the GCL game today. Manny Barreda with 3 shutout innings. He is worth watching as he progresses through the system.

  84. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes

Good post Pete, but I seems to be that people are getting a bit too overzealous in their hopes that CC pitches for NY next season.

Not sure why everyone assumes as much.

  85. MoBoy(aka McLovin)

CC is a must.Hughes is not gonna past 80 innings. We need someone who pitches 200 innings and don’t have a history of getting hurt.

Let Pettitte be the big game winner.CC is a must to let our prospects take there time to be Aces.

  86. ANSKY

If he keeps cruising along like he has, you really have to consider offering the re-invented Mike Moose a 1-year deal with a team option for ‘10.

Nobody, including myself, woulda thunk this 3 months ago but he has definitely (re)opened some eyes.

    Good fer him.

    And good fer the team.

  87. ANSKY

    Wang
    Moose
    Joba
    Pettitte
    Hughes

    CC?

    Humberto?
    Kennedy?
    Brackman?

  88. JZ

What about Sheets? He’s now one of two Brewers pitchers expected to test the market his fall. He doesn’t wow quite like Sabathia at his best, but he might be a cheaper alternative if Cashman doesn’t want to drop $20m per year for a younger David Wells. Any thoughts?
