The selling of the Stadium

Peter Abraham
July

Saw this link over on Bronx Banter and figured you guys would be interested. New York Magazine has a good piece on how Yankee Stadium will be sold off once it closes.

I get a lot of e-mails from people asking how they can get something. There will be a huge market for pieces of the Stadium. Seats, signs, even grass and dirt. This story breaks it down well.

————

Meanwhile the always astute Tyler Kepner took time out from chasing kids and dogs on his day off and blogged about C.C. Sabathia going to Milwaukee.

Tyler is right, the Yankees will pay for him once, when he’s a free agent. No sense giving up the prospects and paying him. Further evidence that 2008 is more about 2009 and 2010

    C.C. you in 2009. :)

Love Jeter’s quote about how he’s going to steal something. Doesn’t know what it is, but he’s taking something.

(e-mail this lady if you’re mad about the espn camera crew following Alex & Bobby http://sports.espn.go.com/keyw.....page=espn)

“Tyler is right, the Yankees will pay for him once, when he’s a free agent. No sense giving up the prospects and paying him. Further evidence that 2008 is more about 2009 and 2010″

Well, sorta. If the Yankees sign CC they will pay him as a free agent and then pay again in compensation draft picks. As we have seen in recent years, two first round picks can result in two high impact players if scouted properly. The Brewers are in line to get 4 picks after this season, two for CC and two for Sheets most likely.

  3. murphydog

    mel:

Great minds etc… I just posted the same ESPN link on the older thread.

Come on people. Rock that e-mail!

  4. Fredo Corleone

Buying jars of dirt and dead grass???

P.T. Barnum was sooooo on the money.

  5. Patrick Bateman

Too bad its still 2008. Sabathia doesn’t help the problems now if he’s signed in 2009.

Biggest help is going to be Victor Zambrano and Sidney “Happy Hour” Ponson?

  6. Jorge Steinbrenner

Andrew – SJ referenced a Joel Sherman article in the Post over the weekend that really should be required reading on the Yanks’ plans. Give it a look on the Post website.

  7. Josh

next year we can sign CC AND TExieria.. that would be awesome.

  8. raymagnetic ®™

I just finished reading that Sherman article and it’s very good.

Hopefully the plan comes together and the Yankees can field their A-Team.

  9. Fredo Corleone

Jeez! Pena homers off Soria in the bottom of the 9th. 3-3

  10. mel

Dang, I go to shoot off an e-mail and the Rays tie it up.

  11. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Texeira can go elsewhere, CC can come here anytime he wants.

  12. Matt

I have a wooden seat from the original Yankee Stadium. My dad says he bought it in 1975 off a truck in front of the stadium for 5 bucks.

    Crazy

  13. Dan

Matt – does the seat have the original green color?

  14. jennifer

And now Steiner will buy the entire stadium, because of it’s rich history, and charge you a grand for a seat.

  15. JoeyA

Question of the day: Who, if any, free agents do we see coming back to the Yankees after this year?
    Pavano
    Giambi
    Mussina
    Pettitte
    Farnsworth
    Hawkins
    Abreu
My guess would be the only one coming back with the same contract COULD be Abreu. Giambi/Pettitte/Mussina may be back for far less money than we are paying them now. Giambi is a bit of a stretch, but if he can put up good DH numbers, with Hideki’s knees failing on him and that short porch in right, Giambi could be a possibility. IMO, I can see us taking back Pettitte or Mussina for less money, but not both. We need a veteran starter if we are hoping for a Wang/CC/Joba front end and Phil Hughes @ 4 or 5.

  16. Confucius

“next year we can sign CC AND TExieria.. that would be awesome.”

I’m well past the point where I get all excited about any big signing the Yankees make. Too many players we’ve signed over the past decade have come here and caused more grief than they were worth. I’d be ‘wait and see’ on both of them, with little optimism. There’s little guarantee CC will hold up over the next five years with his bulk and all the innings he’s logged. Teixeira isn’t -that- good considering what we’d have to pay him, and I’d have to see if he can handle the NY spotlight.

  17. Mark Da Rosa

Just wrote a letter to espn, about last night’s broadcasting problems in the eighth inning where there was a camera pointing into the Yankee’s tunnel where Abreu was giving tips to Arod about Manny Delcarmen.

  18. Fredo Corleone

    Royals threatening in the 10th

  19. bdog375

    mel,

Good one. I just wrote her. That was in poor taste showing them last night. Joe Morgan did not appear very happy either.

  20. mel

    Joey A,

    Pettitte, Mussina, and Abreu.

    All short term, but rich.

-Pettitte (one year because he’ll want it that way)
-Mussina (one year because he’s old. He’ll get paid though, because he’s had a good year and he gave us a discount on the last one)
-Abreu (one year with options to hold us until the farmhands can contribute)

  21. DMan

Dirt and dead grass I can pass on…

But I wouldn’t complain about owning one of those dirty old plastic seats… Well, depending on the price.

  22. mel

    Fredo,

    Knockout by Buck.

  23. bdog375

Mussina really is not getting paid that much. $11 mil is not cheap, but I would much rather have him then Gil Meche, Kevin Millwood, Padilla, Jarrod Washoburn, etc. These guys all make as much, or within a few mil, of Mussina. I know this year is a cry from last year, but I would not be opposed to inking Moose to a one year deal.

  24. Fredo Corleone

-Abreu (one year with options to hold us until the farmhands can contribute)

Abreu won’t take one year. He’s got one big free agent splash left. Delaying by one year hurts his cause.

  25. jashell2000

That should be a wrap down at the Trop. Royals with a good lead, hopefully they can hold now.

  26. Jorge Steinbrenner

    Joey,

I can see one of Moose or Andy coming back next year. I don’t think bringing back both necessarily would fit in the Yanks’ plans, unless they fall flat in reeling in a front-of-the-line (i’m avoiding the “A” word) starter. I think they give a try at bringing Hughes back at the #5 spot with a bit less pressure.

I don’t think you bring Abreu back. It’s time to loosen up the barrage of 35 year-old OF/DH types.

The rest have played their last year in pinstripes.

Raymagnetic – glad you read the article. gives me goosebumps, i have to say.

  27. Fredo Corleone

Saw that Mel. Aviles jacked one right after, just to make sure.

  28. bdog375

Well, that Rays game got out of hand rather quick. Looks like they start their road trip on a down note. Hopefully we can keep it that way.

  29. 86w183

There are never any guarantees in life, but it’s comical how many people act like major pitching signings ALWAYS bomb. Maddux, Mussina, Schilling, RJ, (by Arizona), even Pedro have been well worth the money.

I don’t know why people are down on Teixiera… he’s in his prime, plays gold glove defense and before this year was a VERY good RH hitter in addition to his LH power.

Pettite is the only inpending free agent I want back. Abreu is good, but his hot and cold offense doesne make up for his dreadful defense (eek, a wall!). Mussina is having a marvelous season, but if you can sign CC you have to leave spots for the young guns. Farnswurst and Hawkrap are not as good as Veras, Ramirez, Bruney and Robertson… and they cost 20 times as much. Use bullpen depth to deal for a decent lefty like Mahay, MArte, Grabow (bad this year but good int he past) or Rafael Lopez.

I could accept Giambi for something in the $ 8-10 mill range at most… actually I could accept Abreu at that figure too, but we must improve the defense and we must find a quality RH bat.

  30. JoeyA

Tex is nothing to get excited about. His spurts of power will get him nothing but criticism in NY. C.C., on the other hand, is welcomed with open arms IMO. Everyone gets on him about his weight….2 words: David Wells. Sometimes, guys are just big. It doesnt mean they are in bad shape or unathletic i.e. Prince Fielder, and he’s a position player who has to run around bases. We are talking about a pitcher here. It is the one position, in all of sports if you ask me, with the least amount of emphasis on being physically fit. Nevertheless, I don’t think Sabathia is like prior big money signings we’ve made. He is a 28 yr. old proven dominant lefty starter. This should be the prime of his career. This is not Randy Johnson or Kevin Brown. I think once Cash was given more power in ‘05, that was the last time we are going to see ridiculous amounts of money thrown at undeserving, past their prime players.

  31. Global Warming

“even Pedro have been well worth the money.”

    I don’t think so.

1 good year out of 4 is not “worth the money”.

  32. mel

    Fredo,

If that’s the case (and if Alex can bear to part with him), I prefer the “Bubba Crosby will be a starter” approach.

  33. Dr. J

Is Austin Jackson ready to take over in the OF at the start of next year?

  34. Global Warming

“Tex is nothing to get excited about. His spurts of power will get him nothing but criticism in NY”

It would be stupid not to sign Teixeira,

He’s a young right handed gold glove first baseman with great power who is entering his prime at 28.

What else can you ask for?

  35. Global Warming

whoops he’s a switch hitter but he throws right handed.

  36. Jorge Steinbrenner

agree on Tex – it seems like we’ve been sacrificing either offense or defense at first base since we last had Tino. if he can give us 4-5 years of his prime, he’s absolutely worth it.

i don’t think A-Jax is ready next year. we’re still going to be a “work in progress” in 2009, although hopefully closer to where we need to be than we are now.

  37. Support the Stache
  38. JoeyA

I would like Mussina or Andy back @ discounts. I’ll give Mussina 8-10 and Pettitte 10-12. If Mussina wins 18-20, than I can see a bit of a higher pay. Abreu should not get more than 2 years, which, as mentioned earlier, he most likely will not take given hes 34 and nobody wants to be a FA @ 36. The problem is, if we keep Abreu to fill in RF, we need to make a huge decision on Giambi since we still have Matsui and if this year has taught us anything, it’s that Matsui cannot play the field, at least not on any type of regular basis, unless we want another DL stint. So, we will have 2 DH candidates in Matsui and Giambi if we resign the Big-G, both of whom cannot play the field. I think a lot rides on our 1B acquisition. If we get a bat, Bye Bye Giambi, though I’d rather have him at DH than Matsui, but Matsui has another yr and G doesn’t.If we don’t get a bat at 1B, it’s another Andy phillips/Giambi kinda year. pick your poison each game: good bat bad defense, or good D and a given out.
As I’ve said earlier, there is always Jeter. (let the criticism begin, but did we see the botched throw yesterday off the spin play by Jeter. That is a given out with most other SS’s.)

  39. jennifer

Agreed it was wrong of them to stick a camera down the tunnel to catch ALex and Bobby (?) talking about how to approach the pitcher. They went there to be out of the sight of the cameras, yet they found them and broadcasted what they were talking about.

  41. Fredo Corleone

“Is Austin Jackson ready to take over in the OF at the start of next year?”

Nope. Making progress in AA, but he’s not MLB material on a full time basis til 2010 IMO.

  42. jennifer

What is wrong with me? I agree with Mad Dog. He doesn’t think that Fairytek should be on the team. Asking what is wrong with the players.

    Re: Yankee Stadium Seats –

Old, vintage 1923 stadium seats come in varying forms – standing singles and box seat doubles and triples with curved backs. These come up in auctions from time-to-time – some originals, with multi-layers of paint showing through, including the original teal, through to the blue of today.
I had a double curved back pair (which were unrooted from the stadium in the mid-1970s) and sold them at auction for $3,000 – didn’t like the idea of my little kids crawling on them – who knows how much lead was in those seats. Some originals are also available for a little less, if completely refurbished and repainted.

My guess is the new plastic ones could fetch $1,000 per.

  44. Confucius

    “2 words: David Wells”

Wells is the exception, not the rule. There are few other examples of bulky pitchers with big workloads staying effective deep into their careers. If CC proves to be another exception, fine. But you want to gamble a 6 year commitment on it?

“He is a 28 yr. old proven dominant lefty starter.”

Sabathia’s age doesn’t count for much. He made his debut at 20 and, as the pro-Sabathia side is always pointing out, he’s been a 200 inning pitcher every season. He’ll hit 1600 innings by the end of the season. That’s more than Santana, who’s already got people worried about his velocity drop.

    JoeyA—-

In the last three years Texiera has averaged .296 35 120

That’s something I would get excited about from a guy who also won two Gold Gloves in that time and would have won a third if not for being traded.

This year he’s not having a great year, yet .276 16 66 is pretty good as far as I’m concerned. This year has has struggled vs LHP, but that’s an aberration. For the three previous years he’s hit .313 with a HR every 24 AB. His HR rate is better vs RHP (15.4).

I’m not saying he’s Lou Gehrig, but he’s a damn good ball player.

  47. Global Warming

I think Giambi is going to cash in this year and I don’t blame him one bit. It’s probably going to be his last contract and he’s having a heckuva year.

I see him looking for 2 or 3 years and I don’t see the Yankees giving him that.

The Yankees are all about years per not millions per. That’s why the Pettitte contracts are such steals for the Yankees. Is Pettitte worth 16 Million a year? No way but at 1 year there is no risk — for the Yankees anyway.

  48. billy

I think Ajax may get a chance sometime next year but he doesn’t start the season in CF in New York. It will be interesting to see how much time in SWB he sees this year. He adapts well to new leagues. He thrived in Tampa last year after getting the call after being bad for the Riverdogs.

  49. Confucius

“I agree with Mad Dog. He doesn’t think that Fairytek should be on the team.”

I liked Keith Law’s take on it. It might be more insulting to Varitek than anyone. Now everyone’s drawing attention to his terrible year.

  50. Fredo Corleone

“As I’ve said earlier, there is always Jeter. (let the criticism begin, but did we see the botched throw yesterday off the spin play by Jeter. That is a given out with most other SS’s.)”

There’s always Jeter??? What does that mean?? He can’t be traded. No other team would take on that salary.

As for the spin move by Jeter, it was a hit no matter who the SS is. Jeter compounded the issue by not eating the ball and allowing Lugo second base.

  51. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Anybody think we add a RHB in Miguel Olivo ? I mean he stops the running game as good as Molina

    Miguel Olivo

    9 SB 9 CS

    Jose Molina
    7.99 RFg, .995 FPCT

I mean Posada isn’t a sure bet and Olivo’s bat exceeds Moellers

Brandon – I dropped “NESPN” in there for you too lol

The Yanks will have to make a decision, also, about the DH slot. Giambi, Matsui, Damon – in a sense, I think these guys are on the bubble themselves to see who is brought back. They are also auditioning for 2009, I think.

And, while I’m no baseball professional, I’d be a little surprised if Austin Jackson is ML ready by next spring. He is in AA, after all. Maybe an outfield of Damon, Gardner, Melky in right? The catch is not a lot of power in that group. I know Abreu is slumping right now, and one might argue you can’t count him out, but Cash may go elsewhere to fill one of those OF spots.

  55. rconn23

Teixeira is a terrfic ballplayer – offensively and defensively. Anyone who says otherwise doesn’t know what they are talking about. He has 55 walks, 66 RBIs and 16 HRs so far.

The offense is old in the tooth. You can’t expect it to just “wake up” when the majority of the offense will be well past their primes. Abreu is not a No. 3 hitter right now, he’s just not. And he should not be resigned. Giambi, Damon and Matsui are always injury concerns.

If you don’t sign Tex, then as Sherman’s column said, you have to look at trading a top prospect or two for an impact bat.

  56. raymagnetic ®™

“Raymagnetic – glad you read the article. gives me goosebumps, i have to say.”

    I’m with you there.

  57. 86w183

P.S. Sabathia has only topped 200 innings twice. Last year when Cleveland overused him he threw 241. In 2002 he threw 210. In the four years in between he was in the 188-197 range, which is very consistent.

hey Girardi was already ejected when the Abreu/A-Rod conversation happened. I wonder if he was watching ESPN in the locker room and what he thinks about that whole thing.

“What is wrong with me? I agree with Mad Dog. He doesn’t think that Fairytek should be on the team. Asking what is wrong with the players.”

Players don’t get it. Varitek is on now. Not much that can be done about that. They vote for Gold Gloves too, which are routinely among the most bogus awards issued.

  60. andy Hawkin's ghost

THANK YOU PETER! 2008 is a development year. We will be better off the next two or three years because we took our lumps this year. Lost in last night’s heroics by Gardner (who will be at best a role player-but hopefully a very good one) was Robertson’s solid outing. The Joba development continues and will be perfected next year. Perhaps we see Karstens get another shot. Maybe Cox or some of the other young kids later on (Cox is hurt at the moment right?) This is a HUGE learning year for Cano. If he can bounce back a terrible start, it will say quite a bit about him. We desperately need production from him, it changes the entire face of the lineup. Abreu is playing himself out of a contract at the moment. Ironing out the kinks.

  61. billy

If Christian doesn’t do anything, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Yankees give Matt Carson a shot. The dude has a cannon and is raking at the dish. Chad Jennings thinks he can play in the majors somewhere and may be a piece in a deal.

  62. Jorge Steinbrenner

“P.S. Sabathia has only topped 200 innings twice. Last year when Cleveland overused him he threw 241. In 2002 he threw 210. In the four years in between he was in the 188-197 range, which is very consistent.”

good enough to be part of a three-headed monster with Wang and Joba, as far as I’m concerned.

if anyone should be giving fans goosebumps right now, it’s Joba Chamberlain. we’re seeing the bumps in the road, but what he’s showing when he’s “on” is downright scary. we haven’t had a young pitcher this dominant since I was watching Sesame Street and a young Ron Guidry was on the mound. remember these starts. you’re going to be telling kids about them in 15 years.

  63. TL

As for possible pitching help, I wouldn’t count out McCuthen. He looked great yesterday for SWB and seems to be putting it all together after some bad outings, highlighted by one or two bad innings.

  64. Jorge Steinbrenner

my thought got mumbled there….. i didn’t mean to say that he’s as dominant now as Guidry. i meant that he could be once he gets the rhythm of starting more under his belt. sorry.

I mean Posada isn’t a sure bet to finish the season healthy and Olivo’s bat exceeds Moellers, or we could do a 180 and go after Ronny Paulino who has upside catching and a good bat.

.410/.465/.949 in AAA right now seems to have fell off from Pittsburgh’s valueable assets list.

  73. SJ44

The Yankees won’t pay Tex 20 million a year.

Not happening. If someone else wants to do it, that’s on them.

He’s not a 20 million dollar player and they aren’t going to have a 200 million dollar payroll next year.

Look at the roster, add up who are sure things to return (and how much money they make), then look at how many spots are needed to fill out the roster.

It will give you an idea of how they will attack the market.

They can package prospects to get a first basemen or OF, if need be. Tex isn’t the only guy they “have” to get to fill the position.

  74. raymagnetic ®™

“who is? In this market, someone’s going to give him the bank why not it be the Yankees. They can’t sit aside and pass on a big bat in his prime.”

I honestly don’t think they need Texeira. Maybe they can scoop up a first baseman in a trade if they land CC. I don’t think they Yankees are going to give two players multiple year 20 mil deals. I think it’ll be one or the other and I’d prefer the pitcher.

  75. Confucius

Man, does Russo get on Santana.

Must still be bothered by all those postseason games he didn’t win against us.

  76. SJ44

    Brandon,

The pitchers in FL hated pitching to Olivo last year. He’s got a bad rep on working with pitchers and this years throwing numbers are an anomoly. He isn’t known as being a good catch and throw guy.

  77. Fredo Corleone

    Brandon:

Olivo still getting on base at a .280 or so clip??? He’s close to an auto out. A Kingman among catchers, if you will. He might be good for 10-15 homers, but little else. Lot of these pitchers seem fairly comfortable with Molina right now.

  78. Jessica

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that a team who loses a ranked free agent only gets 1 compensation pick from the signing team, and another supplementary pick from mlb.

  79. E-Dog

They are not going to give Tex 140 mil for 7 years when they need 1b for Jeter, Posada and probably Giambi.

  80. BG

E-Dog is exactly right. I don’t know what people’s fascination is with Tex. You don’t tie up 1B on an aging team. If we’re lucky and don’t need 1B for Posada and/or Jeter in a few years, we have Montero in the minors who could slide into that spot. I’d rather reup w/ Giambi for another year.

If they going to be aggressive about acquiring anyone in the offseason, it should be another front line starter and/or a new RFer.

  81. BG

Regarding the Olivo idea, I threw out in a thread yesterday the idea of trying to get Brandon Inge from the Tigers for prospects. It would be a salary dump for the Tigers and he could be a 3rd catcher for the yankees that would enable them to dfa moeller since he never plays while adding a RH bat with some pop and a little speed. He’s also would add a lot of flexibility to the bench in that he can play both corner IF positions and some OF. I think the tigers even played him in CF some early in the year. The downside is that he’s overpaid for a bench player and has several years left on his contract. With the aging of our team though, I think having a good 3rd catcher the next few years could be a good thing as long as its not taking up a roster space with someone who would never play anywhere else. Thoughts?
