The Yankees have a lot of faith in Brett Gardner and that faith was rewarded last night during a 5-4 victory against the Red Sox.

Johnny Damon is on the DL for the first time. This notebook also has updates on Jose Molina and Joba Chamberlain.

Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Mariano Rivera are All-Stars. Jason Giambi still has a shot while Mike Mussina reacted well to being snubbed.

Rick Carpiniello looks at the All-Star teams and wonder why Ken Griffey Jr. isn’t headed to the Stadium.

Griffey is not having a good year, so what business does he have at the all-star game?? Guys like Ludwick or McClouth shouldn’t get jobbed out of the game because people feel sympathetic for the old dude who doesn’t have it anymore.

  2. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache' July 7th, 2008 at 3:56 am

Umm because hes Griffey? Like Bonds, he deserves to be there every year. If not starting, at least be chosen by the manager just to show his face. Its not like everyone plays anyway.

This whole thing isnt over yet, players pull out all the time, whether they cant do it, dont want to do it, or are too hurt to do it.

  3. DLoBrown July 7th, 2008 at 4:00 am

Griffey is playing like crap this year. Why should a more deserving player lose his spot for him? Go ahead and put Randy Johnson on the roster then if that’s how you do things.

  4. DLoBrown July 7th, 2008 at 4:02 am

Griffey aint getting in regardless of how many pull out. Here are the reason why: Burrell, C. Lee, Hart, Rowand, D. Lee, Bay. And that list can go on for a while. Griffey’s only chance was fan vote.

  5. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache' July 7th, 2008 at 4:06 am

Deserving to be in, doesnt mean anything. Does Fukudome deserve to be in? No. But if Varitek is on the team for his veteranship and leadership then why doesnt Griffey deserve to be?

  6. Kaballah July 7th, 2008 at 4:07 am

Guess who’s on the front page?

    http://www.nydailynews.com/img.....e_0707.jpg

On the flip side, The POST looks at an upcoming tell-all-book by Madonna’s brother:

Ciccone, 47, an interior designer, says he’ll blow the lid off his sister’s dalliances with drugs, lesbian flings and marital blowups.

This soap opera should last the full year!!

  7. DLoBrown July 7th, 2008 at 4:10 am

Varitek wasn’t picked because of his veteranness and leadership. He was picked because the idiot players voted for him.

Griffey doesn’t belong. And Varitek definitely doesn’t belong. But that has absolutely nothing to do with whether Griffey should be on the team or not.

  8. DLoBrown July 7th, 2008 at 4:12 am

And Fukudome was voted in. He doesn’t deserve to be there either. But him and Ichiro and pedroia are examples of people winning popularity contests when they shouldn’t have been the starters.

Once again, griffey couldn’t even get in that way. And his performance doesn’t merit getting selected over more deserving players that also weren’t voted in like Burrel or Wright, etc.

  10. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache' July 7th, 2008 at 4:37 am

I dont know why, and dont want to know why, but you sure hate Griffey.

  11. DLoBrown July 7th, 2008 at 4:40 am

I don’t hate him. But I do want the players who have played the best in 2008 to get in the game. Why do you confuse that philosophy for hatred of another player?

  12. DLoBrown July 7th, 2008 at 4:42 am

If you want Griffey in the game, then you must also be pissed that Maddux and The Big Unit aren’t in the game, right? All 3 players will go down as some of the greatest players of all time. So if you have no problems with Maddux or Johnson not being there, you should understand why Griffey doesn’t belong either.

  13. DLoBrown July 7th, 2008 at 4:43 am

Remember, this game determines home field advantage in the world series. The NL owes it to its teams to field the very best team right now, not guys who had their best years a decade ago.

  14. DLoBrown July 7th, 2008 at 4:45 am

It’s very simple. If Griffey were one of the best 6 or 7 outfielders in the NL this year, then I would definitely want him in the game. But he doesn’t even crack the top 10, so he doesn’t belong this year. Maybe next year he’ll do better and earn his spot again.

  15. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache' July 7th, 2008 at 4:57 am

Cant you just say all of this in 1 post? Gather your ideas, and then say something.

  16. DLoBrown July 7th, 2008 at 5:00 am

Is that the best reply you can come up with? Have you given up on the Griffey argument? Too bad, it was just getting fun.

  17. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache' July 7th, 2008 at 5:01 am

First you randomly mention that Reyes and Wright deserve to be on the NL team

Now you would rather see the NL have the better team?

You say your not a Mets fan, but its seems clear you may be, either that, or at least a closet Met fan.

You do know the game counts right? We want the AL to win. The worse the players are on the NL team, the better chance we have

  18. DLoBrown July 7th, 2008 at 5:06 am

I am looking at this from an unbiased point of view. I want the best players to play for both teams.

So the best you can do to argue for Griffey now is to state that it would make the NL team worse? Nice.

Griffey is batting .240 this year with a .750 OPS. Does this really srceam out “All-Star” to you? It isn’t much more impressive than Varitek’s line, especially for an outfielder.

Any why do you still think I’m a Mets fan? Because I asserted that a Mets player is more deserving than Miguel Tejad? I also said Brandon Phillips was more deserving. Does that make me a Reds fan too? Boy, you jump to conclusions very quickly. It is not surprising at all that they are incorrect conclusions.

  19. DLoBrown July 7th, 2008 at 5:08 am

And you still have no response for justifying why a guy like Griffey deserves to be in there but not Maddux or Johnson.

  20. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache' July 7th, 2008 at 5:14 am

Because Pitching you use. You can have Griffey there just as name sake and have him sit the whole game or get an at bat that doesnt matter. But what were to happen if Maddux or Johnson gave up a HR and the game ended 1-0? Griffey is doing better than Varitek, thats my excuse. Griffey also just hit his 600th HR, and his father was a pretty good Yankee in his day. Not to mention the who George vs Ken Griffey in the dugout BS. Griffey has been great to baseball, and to hate on him because people want him as an allstar is kind of wrong. How did Cal Ripken JR do the season he was retiring and hit the HR in the All Star Game? Wound up batting .239. Its not always about who is the best. Does Manny deserve to start? No. Ichiro? No, but they are anyway.

And again, gather your thoughts, and thennnn post

  21. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache' July 7th, 2008 at 5:18 am

Voted in that dont deserve it

    Fukudome
    Ramirez-
    Ichiro
    Varitek
    Ortiz-
    Soriano
    Jeter
    Tejada
    Wagner

Stat wise, do any of them belong?

  22. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache' July 7th, 2008 at 5:38 am

And besides the average, what has Griffey done so bad? 11 Hrs in the first half from a player that any power production from at this point is a plus. Good OBP, 38 RBIs behind Dunn Phillips and Votto. He is actually having a pretty good season for a 4th place team

  23. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache' July 7th, 2008 at 5:46 am

    Back to Yankee talk,

Robinson Cano is 3-3 with 3 clutch hits after Joe Girardi gets thrown out.

1-1 in The game winner in the 9th against the Orioles ? earlier this season

2-2 tonight with the 2 RBI triple in the 7th, and single to start the 10th

  24. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache' July 7th, 2008 at 6:34 am

Buster Olney just said there is NO way that the Brewers re sign Sabathia. Obviously they wont say who are the favorites right now, but still its a good start. But he said the reason its a no is because it would double or triple the highest contract they have ever had

  25. Rick July 7th, 2008 at 6:54 am

Gardner is predicted to be an everyday player by most scouts. He will not be a super star but a solid player. I think the Yankees need a few solid everyday players. This is how they won in the late nineties with solid everyday players who play the game everyday.

  26. MJR July 7th, 2008 at 6:54 am

If by some strange chance we make it to the playoffs, and as much as I love Joba…..he’s really going to have to learn to keep his emotions in check.

  27. Doreen July 7th, 2008 at 7:35 am

    MJR -

If by emotions you mean walks, I agree. :)

  28. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache' July 7th, 2008 at 7:51 am

Joba has the whole summer to get it together. Joba should be the least of your worries if the Yanks make the playoffs

  29. 86w183 July 7th, 2008 at 8:01 am

Joba is doing great as far as I’m concerned. None of the balls was hit all that hard, Pedroia just did a great job muscling an inside fastball into shallow RFC.

Amazing to hear Joe “I love my Jetes” Morgan refuse to criticize the Captain for getting trapped off 2B on a line drive to SS. That’s a little league level mistake, but not to kiss up Joe!

Who cares about Griffey either way? Remember for years The Mick was on the All-Star team though he was not longer an elite player.

    Leaderness is not a word.

  30. RER - 98 July 7th, 2008 at 8:02 am

Joba is turning the corner. The next phase in his starter development should have him learning to be more economical with his pitches. This will happen.
Right now his pitch count is too high by the 5th or 6th inning.

  31. Keith July 7th, 2008 at 8:05 am

It was hilarious seeing Varitek sent up as a pinch hitter for Lugo. And Boston has this wealth of depth ? Pffft !!!

  32. sunny615 July 7th, 2008 at 8:17 am

What a good win these past two nights. Preferably, I would have liked to have seen a tad more offense, but at this point, I’ll take what I can get. These two wins, while great, still do not allay my concerns with this “consistently inconsistent” offense (Jeter’s words). This next series will also be a teller of how this team will respond to the challenges ahead. I hope they respond.

ESPN has Pettitte against Kazmir – and Yankees.com has Ponson. I think it’d be prudent to skip Ponson if possible. And insight Pete?

  33. randy l July 7th, 2008 at 8:20 am

“The next phase in his starter development should have him learning to be more economical with his pitches.”

joba just needs to be coached to locate and trust his fastball more.

hitters can’t look in and out at the same time.

joba sometimes gives hitters too much credit and tries to fool them with breaking balls which are often balls and his pitch count goes up.

but what’s not to like about joba?

  34. sunny615 July 7th, 2008 at 8:22 am

    nothing. love the joba.

  35. jennifer July 7th, 2008 at 8:32 am

Who is the biggest baby in all of baseball?

    Kevin Youkilis

“He got two hits on two balls away, so we were going to try to, you know, throw it under his bat and try to run it under his hands. And it got away,” Chamberlain said. “There was nothing behind it. I’m trying to get him out. He’d been on base two times. I don’t want him to be on base again.”

Youkilis seemed to think there was intent.

“What I want to say, I’m not going to say,” was his reaction.

Um Kevin, he was trying to go inside, and went a little too far inside. Grow up and be a man.

  36. 86w183 July 7th, 2008 at 8:33 am

Girardi made it clear after Pettite’s last start that he would go on Tuesday. Big Sid gets the ball for Wednesday and if he is anything like his last start it will be his LAST start.

  37. BUZZ July 7th, 2008 at 8:33 am

Is it me or does the yankees always win games before a day off

  38. TurnTwo July 7th, 2008 at 8:36 am

sunny, i believe ESPN is assuming the Yankees would be smart enough to skip their 5th starter when given the opportunity, but if i remember correctly, Ponson is throwing game 1 and Pettitte game 2 of the series.

  39. RhapsodyInBlue July 7th, 2008 at 8:36 am

I could be wrong but believe from what I saw Giradi blew his stack not only because the high strike called on Molina but because the ump had continually squeezed Joba by not giving him low strikes the Sox were getting and also not obvious strikes on the outside corner.

  40. RhapsodyInBlue July 7th, 2008 at 8:37 am

I meant to type **not getting obvious strikes on the outside corner**

  41. TurnTwo July 7th, 2008 at 8:38 am

“Um Kevin, he was trying to go inside, and went a little too far inside. Grow up and be a man.”

cant say i blame him. joba already sailed one over his head last year, which was obviously intentional, and any time i have a dude who can throw high 90′s up in the zone, id be a little fidgety, too.

  42. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache' July 7th, 2008 at 8:40 am

    Fukudome is a funny name

  46. TurnTwo July 7th, 2008 at 8:48 am

“Jeter tops the list in the popularity contest.”

that might be true, but there also arent many other options in the AL at SS this year to push Jeter out of the way.

and for all the griping about Pedroia, its not like he’s having an awful year and got voted in… even if Kinsler has marginally better numbers than Pedroia in some categories, its not like he hasnt earned a spot.

  47. RhapsodyInBlue July 7th, 2008 at 8:49 am

    turn two Really?

You came to the wrong location if you plan on defending alien head Youkilis. Those two pitches were wild despite all the whining by Youkilis and again last night. What a baby.

  48. The Iron sheik July 7th, 2008 at 8:50 am

I’m so glad Girardi blew his top over those rotten strikes.

Torre would never had done that. He was too content drinking his tea in the dugout to worked up.

  49. RhapsodyInBlue July 7th, 2008 at 8:51 am

    turn two

It’s not about the year Pedroia is having, everyone knows it’s decent.

It’s because he was picked over Kinsler who has MVP numbers.

Great to have a Sox apologist on first thing in the morning.

  50. TurnTwo July 7th, 2008 at 9:06 am

“It’s because he was picked over Kinsler who has MVP numbers.

Great to have a Sox apologist on first thing in the morning.”

MVP numbers? get real. he’s good, but he’s not an MVP. he’s not even the MVP on his own team.

and if you think you’re talking to a saux apologist, then you’re living in a fog.

there’s nothing wrong with admitting the saux have an all star player worthy of starting the all star game.

  51. sunny615 July 7th, 2008 at 9:09 am

The All-Star game selection is full of flaws. It also doesn’t help that the selection process is pretty much a popularity contest and 90% of the voters out there don’t look at stats to justify their selections. Like Moose said, you could literally make another team with those who were left off and those players would have just as much reason to be considered the All-Star team as the selected ones.

Besides, the All-Star team will always have a high number of Yankee/Red Sox players because of the size of their respective fandoms. (Who here honestly doesn’t think Jeter is on the AS team because it’s at Yankee Stadium this year?) Plus, coming off a WS title, the Red Sox players have a perception of success (valid or not) which helps boost their candidacy. I’m not even going to get into the “every team must be represented” BS.

  52. RhapsodyInBlue July 7th, 2008 at 9:13 am

    turn two

Pedroia can’t hold a candle to the season numbers Kinsler has. Not a Sox stooge? Had me fooled.

You could make a case for Ian Kinsler as AL MVP if the season ended today. As of this morning Kinsler leads the AL in BA .328, 4th in SBs 26, 10th in OBP .387, first in 77 runs scored, first in hits 118, 3rd in doubles 28, first in total bases 196. And has 14 homeruns and 53 RBIs as a lead off man.

  53. TurnTwo July 7th, 2008 at 9:23 am

im not saying Kinsler isnt a better player so far this season, but its not like Pedroia isnt good, too.

he’s batting .312, and like .450 the last week plus. he’s also got 9 HRs, 41 RBI, 9 SBs, and Kinsler couldnt hold Pedroia’s jock as a defensive 2B. you could lay a glove down by itself in between 1B and 2B and itd be better defensively than Kinsler.

all im saying it that of all the positions and all the players that dont deserve to be there over the two all star teams, the fans did a lot worse than picking the 2nd best 2B to play over the best 2B.

i understand the hatred of the red saux, but lets not make it out to be the biggest all star snub of all time.

  54. Don Vito A. Bellamo July 7th, 2008 at 9:26 am

These 2 wins against the BoSux were huge….but we still need to win at least 5 out of the next 6 ( including taking BOTH of these next 2 games at home against those PUNK Rays ) to have the MO-mentum we need going into AND coming out of the break. Aside from the games that Ponson and Razz are pitching, we can win these easily. Even more reason to really look at dropping those 2 slugs out of the rotation for the 2nd half. Now that CC is gone for the season…( we can just sign him for 2009 now ! )…we need to look for the best available pitcher AND SIGN TEX. Winning 4 in a row ( 2 against the RedDinks and 2 against the PunkRays would show some real CONSISTENT heart )

  55. RhapsodyInBlue July 7th, 2008 at 9:29 am

    Turn two

I didn’t say the biggest snub of all time but is imo of this year.

At least the Players rightfully selected Kinsler for the team. Jeter doesn’t belong as a starter either.

This Pedroia selection to start at 2nd is just another example of why the fan selection aspect of the all-star team is a joke.

“This Pedroia selection to start at 2nd is just another example of why the fan selection aspect of the all-star team is a joke.”

but thats my point. this isnt an example at all… if Robby Cano was voted to start the All Star game, then youd have a point.

but they voted in the 2nd best player instead of the best player at the position… the fans have done MUCH worse before.

i agree, its a broken system, but the game is also supposed to be entertainment. the fans vote for who they want to see, not necessarily the player who deserves to be there.

once you get past that, you’ll learn not to get so worked up over it.

Jermaine Dye and Evan Longoria are the most deserving guys on that ballot… maybe Giambi is chosen to replace Ortiz.

Pedroia/Kinsler is a legit debate… really depends on how much you value defense, I suppose. Just like Youkilis vs Giambi at 1B.

Kinsler/Hamilton MVP argument is like arguing weather Don Knotts or Clint Eastwood was a more convincing police officer… right ow it isn’t close.

I just wish the All-Star game would go back to being the meaningless feel-good exhibition it’s supposed to be… another American League beat down and maybe there’ll be enough votes… it’s an idiotic way to choose something as important as home field in the World Series.

As long as the All-Star participants are selected by human beings, whether it is the fans, the players or managers, the team is going to be imperfect. Even if the roster could be expanded, it would not solve all the problems, because some selected players would not necessarily play, and STILL some players on the team would be “undeserving” and others more “deserving” would be omitted.

It is what it is, so why not just enjoy it for what it is?

  78. whozat July 7th, 2008 at 10:17 am

The all-star stuff is pretty simple…it’s stupid. The fans vote for who they like, modulated by reputation. The players vote for reputation, modulated by who they like and — maybe — who’s REALLY fallen off a cliff (see: Griffey). The manager selects the best player from each team too unpopular/crappy to have gotten a selection yet…and then usually makes a good faith effort to pick guys who are having monster years underneath the fan/player radar with his paltry few remaining selections.

The pre-nup would have been drawn up prior to the marriage and A-Rod and Boras were definitely on the same side then.

Whether they are speaking now has little to do with what he did to protect A-Rod’s interest 5 years ago.

  86. BigV July 7th, 2008 at 10:26 am

    PHIL RIZZUTO

I’ve only seen a few clips of him but from what I’ve heard from the old timers this is exactly Bret Gardiner. He is extremely pesky at the plate and is hard to strikeout fouling off a lot of balls. But no scrub – he gets a lot of little hits here and there and does all the little things, like get beating out ground balls, hard to double up , laying bunts for sacrifices, beating out bunts.

sort of like a layup in basketball versus a dunk – still counts as two points. Also Phil was an awesome fielder with a good enough arm and that is Gardiner exactly.

I realize only a few games but – would love to see someone in the news out together a comparison video – I’d bet it would be real interesting. They even run the same way

PS: The Scooter was an All Star too…….

Yankees heading in the right direction with the farm – just not as fast as we like..

SS is a much more important defensive position than LF.

Gardner as a CF is good, not great, according to people who’ve seen him. Fast does not automatically equate to incredible fielding.

Also…Gardner can’t even hit .300 in AAA. Let’s not say that he’ll be a great slap hitting speedster at in the bigs when he’s got all of three hits to his name. Scooter also didn’t K a lot. Gardner does. He walked enough in the AAA this year to make up for it. Let’s see if he keeps doing that.

Any player that spends as much time looking in the stands home or away at where the hotties are seated as A-Rod does is a candidate for divorce court.
Even the single Captain doesn’t spend anywhere near the time looking in the stands to see who’s looking at him. He realizes that nothing can be done about hotties until the last pitch is thrown.

as for the yankees, they were very fortunate to split with the sox, a sweep would have just about ended thier season. as it stands now, only 4 games out of the w.c., we are still in the hunt. i think its really necessary to win 2 of 3 vs. tampa, if we could pull off the sweep, we’d be back in the division race.

However, I’d be shocked if the pre-nup did not have provisions for children in it. “Also…Gardner can’t even hit .300 in AAA.”

I think thats a little misleading considering he was on base more than 40% of the time. Thats an extremely good OBP and he had great slugging for slap hitter. I’m not saying he’s going to be great but I think he has the potential to be a starting outfielder.

i believe its only a 2 game series.

i always figured the yankees would or could at least split the 4 game series with the Saux, and the 2 game series with the Rays. their problem lies in their inability to win series against the Reds and Rangers over the past couple weeks. those are games against bad teams that you need to win.

The guy was comparing him to Rizzuto, who played in a fundamentally different era. I think if you wanted to compare them directly, Gardner’d need to hit over .300 with a high OBP to be near as valuable — and he’d need to K less.

I never said he didn’t have the potential to start. Flip through my posts in this very thread. I said that, if his walks translate well (better than his Major League Equivalency, which projects his OBP at about .350) he could be a starter.

I’m not a lawyer, but I’m pretty sure a pre-nup is a contract between ARod and Cyn, and has nothing to do with the kids. Even if a man is NOT married, the courts make him support the kids. An adult can NOT contracturally get out of their parental responsibilities.

Cyn is an adult. She can get a job and support herself. The kids however, can not support themselves. And Doreen is correct. If the pre-nup holds up (and some do not) Cyn will get the amount specified in the contract, which I highly doubt is nothing (I’ll bet it’s over $1m). My guess is Cyn will get $1m or more per child in child support.

IMO, yes. Molina is leading the league in cutting down runners attempting to steal. Anyone who remembers Moose’s problems with runners on base last year will recognize how important Jose is to Moose’s success this year, in many ways.

Molina is literally erasing possible runs from the opponent’s side of the ledger. There has to be some way to factor that into an equivalent contribution on the offensive side. These are guys who have already gotten on base and are trying to move into scoring position. Jose shoots them dowm like a good duck hunter.

It must be affecting the way managers work their in-game tactics. Francona effectively admitted this.

I recall SJ44 saying that exact same thing a few weeks ago.

“Cleveland according to Sweeney Murti wanted Phil Hughes and Austin Jackson included for CC Sabathia.”

You all know SJ44 is Sweeney Murti, right?

“Cleveland according to Sweeney Murti wanted Phil Hughes and Austin Jackson included for CC Sabathia.”

seems to be about on par with what the Brewers gave up.

Moose was not snubbed. I count 14 (fourteen!!!) AL pitchers who currently qualify for the ERA title with lower ERA and more innnigs per start – the ONLY two stats that matter in the end for starting pitchers. FOURTEEN!!!

I currently have 7 tickets to the upcoming re-scheduled Pirates game on Thursday at PNC available at face value. I was there on the 6/26 rainout and can’t get back to Pitt. If anyone is interested let me know and I can give more details on price and seat location. hate giving these up, but I have to work.
