Vote your conscience, that’s all we ask

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 07, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

As a public service, I had ace tech guy Jeff install MLB’s “Final Vote” widget on the blog. That’s it over to the right. So now you can easily vote for the final two players in the All-Star Game.

Now, as an objective journalist I can’t suggest who you vote (Jason Giambi) because that would be wrong of me (Jason Giambi). Yes, while it’s true that some players (Jason Giambi) would be colorful quotes (Jason Giambi) for the writers and could win the Home Run Derby (Jason Giambi), I think you should vote for whoever you feel is deserving (Jason Giambi).

Might it be hilarious years from now to see a player with a huge cheesy ‘stache (Jason Giambi) in the 2008 All-Star Game highlights? Sure, it would be. But that doesn’t mean it should influence how you vote (Jason Giambi).

In closing, I urge you to vote (Jason Giambi) and participate in the process (Jason Giambi) and select whatever player you like (Jason Giambi).

I wish I could get a “voted’ sticker, like they hand out after the november elections!

  2. Fredo Corleone July 7th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

Amazing how nuts people go over this meaningless exhibition. Giambi’s had a nice year, but he stands behind Longoria and Dye in terms of being deserving.

What are the players thinking in their vote???

  3. Old Goat July 7th, 2008 at 12:39 pm

Rebecca, just paint your finger purple. ;)

  4. Old Goat July 7th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Hmmm, I wonder why I have this sudden urge to vote for Giambi.

  5. Matt July 7th, 2008 at 12:43 pm

Me too! Maybe Pete used some kind of subliminal messaging. Hmmm…

  6. sunny615 July 7th, 2008 at 12:43 pm

    LOL…

  7. CM July 7th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

As a Yankee fan, I really want to vote for the ‘Stache, but Longoria has to go.

I feel the sudden urge to eat cheesy snacks…

  9. gayle July 7th, 2008 at 12:45 pm

Pete can you find out how many times one is allowed to vote. It doesnt stop you from voting early and often and in the rules it doesnt say how many times as far as I could find.

Also one would think if you are trading for CC sabathia you would at least know ahead of time how to pronouce his name. That press conference from MIlwaukee was laughable

  10. BK July 7th, 2008 at 12:45 pm

So tough to decide. Pete, you’re the expert, who would you recommend?

  11. mel July 7th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

Who’s going to vote Longoria in?

Tampa Bay fans? People who do the right thing? 12,034 votes isn’t going to get him in.

  12. RhapsodyInBlue July 7th, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Vote like a Sox fan, until your finger fails off.

  13. RhapsodyInBlue July 7th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

I meant to type **falls off**

  14. Fredo Corleone July 7th, 2008 at 12:51 pm

Fans did a heck of a lot better with the vote than the players did.

  15. pat July 7th, 2008 at 12:54 pm

How crazy are the All-Star selections when Ben Broussard who is currently a Yankee minor leaguer, received more votes than Dioner Navarro who will be playing in the game.

Who knew that Ben Broussard has more family members than the Rays have fans?

  16. Old Goat July 7th, 2008 at 12:55 pm

Being that the AS game is being played in Yankee Stadium I would prefer to see more Yankees get in. Having all those RS players in there needs to be balanced off a bit.

Langoria is plenty young enough for him to get his chances. Giambi in the HR contest would be fun to see and it might actually get me to watch it for a change.

  17. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) July 7th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

    Longoria he deserves it.

  18. JoeT 28 in 09!! VOTE GIAMBI - TERRY'S WORSE THEN CASHMAN!! July 7th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

I think I have personally voted for Giambi more then all the Rays fans combined have voted for Longoria.

Giambi is going to get named to the team for Ortiz (when exactly??) and then we can all do the right thing and vote for Longoria… help those Rays out lol

  19. Patrick â„¢ July 7th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

“Giambi’s had a nice year, but he stands behind Longoria and Dye in terms of being deserving.”

Why? He has the fifth best OPS in the league. Dye and Longoria are close but Giambi has had a better offensive season. I guess if you want to look at fielding Dye and Longoria are clearly superior. Its not like Giambi should be forgotten though, his season is very comparable to Dye and Longoria’s.

  20. al arodien July 7th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

    giabino! he deserves it!

  21. Patrick â„¢ July 7th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

JoeT actually Milton Bradley is replacing ortizzle

  22. jennifer July 7th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

Where did you see the totals so far?

  23. Jack Knight July 7th, 2008 at 12:59 pm

How many times can I vote?

  24. JoeT 28 in 09!! VOTE GIAMBI - TERRY'S WORSE THEN CASHMAN!! July 7th, 2008 at 1:00 pm

Pat – Bradley is already on the team. he’s getting the start, but Giambi should get the roster spot that opens up because of Ortiz

  25. Fredo Corleone July 7th, 2008 at 1:01 pm

Patrick, Giambi is having a fine offensive year, his putrid RISP numebers aside, but Longoria and Dye have more complete games and have probably been more insrumental in their respective teams’ success. Not saying Giambi doesn’t necessarily belong, but I don’t see him as the top choice amongst those three.

  26. Chris NY July 7th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Gotta get Giambi in there so he’ll do the derby. Would really suck if we had no-one in it at The Stadium. I agree with A-Rod not doing it, but we need to get the Stache in there.

  27. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) July 7th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

    Brett Gardner arrives

You can literally hear the disappointment in ESPN’s Jon Miller’s voice, that is so unprofessional.

  28. jennifer July 7th, 2008 at 1:03 pm

Did anyone hear Warner Wolfe this morning? You know how is always carrying on about managers taking out pitchers. Well he talks about Johan, okay. Than he says why to Jerry take out Oliver Perez, and let Wagner pitch the 9th only to blow it. Um because there was a 3 hour rain delay you dolt!

  29. Mop Up Man July 7th, 2008 at 1:03 pm

Giambi’s pennance for relying on steroids to win the MVP award should be his exclusion from this year’s All Star game. Unfortunately, that’s not the official policy of the league, so I’ll just implement it for myself by not voting for him. Go, Yanks.

  30. AlexCT July 7th, 2008 at 1:03 pm

i think there is not limit as to how many times you can vote. i expected it to be the 25 times that the previous vote had. but i have never voted that many times, so i figured i’d just go at it and it’d tell me when i’d reached the limit. well, i voted maybe 30-35 times and it still kept going. in the regular all star vote, has anyone voted 25 times and then been cut off? or does it let you keep going too?

“Does anyone else think that Peter Gammons smashed his mic and threw a temper tantrum after they lost last night. It’s the only explanation for him not being there to interview brett gardner in his shining moment. I have an inside source in the media named Pete who has confirmed this.”

Didn’t they show Gardner standing next to Gammons about to do the interview at the end of the game? They never did, but I assumed it was for sports center or baseball tonight… did that never happen?

  33. jennifer July 7th, 2008 at 1:04 pm

I felt bad for Brett. They kept showing him standing outside the dugout, didn’t look like he knew what to do.

  34. Peter Gammons not worthy of Hall of Fame July 7th, 2008 at 1:05 pm

No more unprofessional than Jon Miller’s call on Cano’s double…or Gammons whining like a baby

Too many relievers for the AL team. Suppose it makes sense if you’re playing it to win it, but some starters get hosed because of it. Greinke instead of Soria??? Lester rather than Papelbon??? How does John Danks and his 2.5 ERA not make it???

  40. Doris From Rego Park July 7th, 2008 at 1:09 pm

they didnt interview gardner because of the conspiracy…. everyone is out to get the yankees

  41. randy l July 7th, 2008 at 1:09 pm

    sj-

so on a baseball note, i may be having an adjustment to my thinking.

what you seem to be saying in general is that this team is such a mess that they need to go in another direction and that direction is youth to shake things up.

even though i like veteran players, i see a certain logic to what you’re saying, gardner for instance is a limited player , but if a team has enough limited players that match up well on the team they’re useful and effective. the present mix is almost a gridlock of poorly matched players.

i’m assuming you would let abreau and giambi go next year to create openings for new players. mussina and farnsworth too. on the surface this looks risky, but maybe it’s not when they’re not performing up to their salaries anyway( except mussina).

sabathia will likely be available for cash only in the fall so that’s a possibility to help the left handed oitching and innings need .

the yankees will still have a veteran presence in arod ,jeter, posada, mariano, etc.

first base is a problem. ideas there?

i don’t think you are giving up on this year as some think. i think it’s more just a realization that a really bad balance has been struck and it needs to be shook up.

I saw they cut away, that’s what made me think it was for sports center… they never interviewed him at all?

That sucks. At least he got a curtain call out of it, but ESPN continuously makes me angry. I emailed them to complain after hearing that troll of a woman broadcaster on Round the Horn complaining that “they should have done it from the start of the season,” talking about Joba as a starter. It never ceases to amaze me how many “professional” commentators are clueless to the simple concept of an innings limit. Especially one that has been widely publicized and put on t-shirts.

Brandon, you’re making a mountain out of a molehill. Jon Miller sounded appropriately excited enough when he stated the hit could tie the game. I don’t get what you’re expecting to hear from a newtral broadcaster.

  67. S.A.- Just win games and can the offense stop being so offensive? July 7th, 2008 at 1:20 pm

    http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/.....y-for-now/

The Yankees were interested in upgrading their rotation, a need that became more acute when Chien-Ming Wang went down to a foot injury. The Yankees also like Sabathia. But they wanted time to explore internal options and were hoping the price would come down. It did not.

The Indians liked the Yankees’ prospects and believed they had enough in their system to get Sabathia. But that would have meant parting with a package that began with the injured starter Phil Hughes, and the Yankees had no interest in doing that.

In staying on the sidelines, Brian Cashman’s thinking matched his approach to the Johan Santana talks last winter: he did not want to pay twice for Sabathia, first in prospects and then with a contract extension.

The Yankees could still pursue Sabathia as a free agent this off-season, and I believe they will be among the most interested teams. (Joel Sherman makes a convincing case here about why this makes sense.) The 2009 rotation could start with Sabathia, Wang and Joba Chamberlain, with some combination of Hughes, Dan McCutchen, Ian Kennedy and free agents Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina rounding it out.

For now, though, the Yankees forge on without Sabathia, and the Brewers suddenly have their best chance at a pennant since they reached the 1982 World Series. One of their starters that fall was Don Sutton, who, like Sabathia, was acquired during the season in a trade.

Frankly, LaPorta is a blue chip hitter. The Yanks HAVE no blue-chip hitters. They’d have had to give up multiple blue-chip pitchers, I figure, to top that. They’re just not close enough this season that that makes sense.

I just think it’s funny that people will point out anything to try to prove ESPN has a bias against the Yanks. Do you think they send out memos to all of the reporters and anchors telling them to make sure to hate the Yankees?

    Gayle and Chris,

I know Red Sox fans have a way of inventing things. Apparently, Yankees fans do too. Peter Gammons was nowhere to be found in the screen. I have the game on DVD along with every game from the 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000 Yankees seasons at http://www.sell.com/23hmdm

  81. Chris NY July 7th, 2008 at 1:28 pm

    From the article linked above:

“The Yankees also were “very heavily involved” in the Sabathia discussions, one source said, but declined to commit the necessary prospects at a time when their 2008 chances are uncertain.”

Not sure how “heavily involved” and “declined to commit the necessary prospects” aren’t a contradiction. Of course the Yankees were very interested in getting him for a reasonable price, which does not include our best prospects for a rental player that we can sign for money only in a few months. But if the price was stated and was too high, I would think “heavily involved” is an exaggeration.

  82. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) July 7th, 2008 at 1:28 pm

G Love it’s the 7th inning it was 4-2 the audience getting sleepy thinking ehhh this game is over Robi won’t do anything, then bang a 2 run triple close your eyes and listening to his call, does that sound like a game changing moment. I guess you’re “inventing” the idea that I care enough to invent anything. Watch your little collection and you’ll see someone that at least looked to me as the cameras cut away to have been Gammons. Maybe it was someone with similar hair or something, as the cameras were cutting away. I thought it was Gammons since they said he was waiting there for an interview with Gammons. Beyond that, I couldn’t care less if you paid me to.

ESPN sucks, no question about it. But I have no need or desire to sit here all day with conspiracy theories, but you have fun with that and peddling your DVD’s. You have those on VHS and Beta too?

  86. Mike July 7th, 2008 at 1:32 pm

Or shall I say. Booyah! The Yankees defeat the Red Sox. NO WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER.

  87. bdog375 July 7th, 2008 at 1:34 pm

I was going to vote for Dye, but after seeing the OPS for Giambi and Dye, I see no reason to pick Dye over Giambi. HR’s and RBI’s are also about the same.

So, of course, I am now voting for the ‘Stache, again, and again, and again, and again until 25 votes have been used.

  88. Doris From Rego Park July 7th, 2008 at 1:34 pm

MIke- where I can go to buy some gave DVD’s?

  89. Fredo Corleone July 7th, 2008 at 1:35 pm

“I would think “heavily involved” is an exaggeration.”

That’s what I’m saying. Heavy involvement to me is saying we put our number one prospect in the deal (like Milwaukee did) and a couple more from our Top 15. If the offer was McCutchen, Cox and Gardner for example, then they weren’t heavily involved.

  90. Mike July 7th, 2008 at 1:35 pm

    Sorry Chris,

I looked back and saw him bending towards the ground. Presumably to retrieve his smashed microphone, or to retrieve his (base)balls from the Red Sox purse.

  91. JoeT 28 in 09!! VOTE GIAMBI - TERRY'S WORSE THEN CASHMAN!! July 7th, 2008 at 1:35 pm

ok besides the fact that if Lowell had tripled to left to score manny and Pedroia how much louder and exciting the call would have been – can we please focus on the THROW FROM COCO CRISP?? geezzz my little sister could make a better toss with her left hand. He threw it from the wall and it was rolling within 100 feet.

  92. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) July 7th, 2008 at 1:36 pm

You are all certifiably nuts if you think there is some conspiracy to censor the yankees on espn. and brandon, take a listen to miller’s call of arod’s homerun and let me know if you think he sounds “pissed”. watch out for the black helicopters

Well Doreen he did tie Mickey Mantle, it would look stupid if he called that passively. Just listen to Lugo’s DP and Robi’s 2 run triple/Gardner’s GW, you’d have to be nuts not to notice the difference.

  93. Doris From Rego Park July 7th, 2008 at 1:37 pm

Mike- can you burn me a copy of the game from June 14th, 2007?

  94. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 12) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) July 7th, 2008 at 1:37 pm

    Doris my fault *

  95. Steve July 7th, 2008 at 1:38 pm

    JoeT

If Lowell had hit that triple Miller would have sounded like he had a heart attack.

  96. Mike July 7th, 2008 at 1:39 pm

Doris, I can sell you a sports card for $6 and along with that card, the June 14 game would come FREE

  97. Fredo Corleone July 7th, 2008 at 1:40 pm

    Brandon:

Why not watch with the sound off if you feel so strong about this. Put that stooge Sterling on if you need somebody to breakdance everytime the Yanks the do something.

  99. whozat July 7th, 2008 at 1:42 pm

“Don’t know, whozat. Is their position vis a vis a playoff spot that much worse than Milwaukee’s????”

I think so, yes. They lead the wild card and are 3.5 games out of the division lead. They aren’t plagued by injury like the Yanks either.

“That’s what I’m saying. Heavy involvement to me is saying we put our number one prospect in the deal (like Milwaukee did) and a couple more from our Top 15. If the offer was McCutchen, Cox and Gardner for example, then they weren’t heavily involved.”

Well…the article says heavily involved. We don’t know what their offers were, if they made any official ones. All we know is that Rosenthal’s sources say they were “heavily involved”, so take that to mean what you will.

  100. Mike July 7th, 2008 at 1:42 pm

Shall I send it to the name Doris Burke

  101. Doris From Rego Park July 7th, 2008 at 1:43 pm

if you guys all think espn hates the yankees so much, just turn on Sterling and Waldman. The yankees could slaughter puppies on the pitchers mound and they wouldn’t criticize them for it

  102. Doris From Rego Park July 7th, 2008 at 1:44 pm

No, my real name is Doris Hershkowitz

  103. Mop Up Man July 7th, 2008 at 1:47 pm

I voted for Dye. There’s no evidence that he cheated like Giambi did.

  104. Fredo Corleone July 7th, 2008 at 1:48 pm

“All we know is that Rosenthal’s sources say they were “heavily involved”, so take that to mean what you will.”

We could allow for the possibility that the Yanks just didn’t have the bat the Tribe needed (Cleveland have some pretty good young pitching prospects and are desperate for position players) and actually offered Hughes, though that goes totally in the face of what Cashman seems to want to do. Otherwise, I don’t know how they could be viewed as heavily invovled.

  105. whozat July 7th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

“Otherwise, I don’t know how they could be viewed as heavily invovled.”

Ok, then you have your answer. Either they did make an offer centered around Phil, or the sources in question (who, presumably, know what happened) have a different understanding of what “heavily involved” means.

  106. bigjf July 7th, 2008 at 1:53 pm

I gotta say I want to vote for Giambi, but he’s probably the least deserving guy out of both lists, aside from Rowand and maybe Guillen. I’d say Longoria or Dye and probably David Wright.

  107. whozat July 7th, 2008 at 1:53 pm

“have a different understanding of what “heavily involved” means.”

For instance…something centered around Montero, Jackson, Betances and someone like Kennedy or Horne. That would certainly be “heavily involved”, no? I don’t think that’s the kind of offer the Yanks should have made, to be clear. But…I’d call that heavily involved without Hughes on the table. That’s a LOT of young upside, and a solid near-MLB piece too.

  108. Yanksrule57 July 7th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

Longoria has been the best player on the best team of the first half and deserves to go.
They sent him down after he won the 3rd base job in spring training to delay his service time. He shrugged that off, and proceeded to have a rookie of the year type first half.

  109. JoeT 28 in 09!! VOTE GIAMBI - TERRY'S WORSE THEN CASHMAN!! July 7th, 2008 at 2:04 pm

Everyone in the league deserves to go since Tek made it. I’m voting for Giambi until he’s added for Ortiz – at that point i’ll vote for Longoria because he definitely deserves it, but until then, I will not rest until the ‘stache wins the derby!!

  110. j July 7th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

i like nothing more than stuffing the ballot box for giambi

  111. Cam July 7th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

I know I won’t get much recognition so far down here, but Giambi has to go! It makes me sick to think about all the RS players who will be starting, and really makes me realize that they have so many bandwagon fans right now that they were able to pull this off. Giambi needs to be there, needs to be in the HR Derby. We need as many Yanks as possible! JD should’ve been there too. Anyway, I’ve already voted about 10 times for Giambi. Please vote!

  112. Sara July 7th, 2008 at 2:17 pm

Pete, it is good to see people in the media pulling for the Giambino. I have always been a fan of his and have always respected the way he took ownership for his actions. Not many guys out there have done that (ie. Bonds and Clemens). Jason seems to be a very well liked and respected guy in MLB. I have never heard a bad word about him (steroids aside). He has proven that he is still an offensive force and I would love to see him represented at the All-Star game..which I will be attending I might add!!!

  113. RonH July 7th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Done “cough” (Giambi, Hart) Pete, “cough” (Giambi, Hart)

  114. Don Vito A. Bellamo July 7th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Pete…you are the best, friend !

  115. Aaron July 7th, 2008 at 2:33 pm

What kind of a sane person would want one of the biggest cheaters in baseball at the all star game instead of the young and exciting Evan Longoria?

Which would be better for baseball?

Giambi is just as bad as Bonds, and it blows my mind how the NY fans pretend like nothing happened.

  116. Fredo Corleone July 7th, 2008 at 2:44 pm

“Giambi is just as bad as Bonds”

His trangressions are as bad, but Giambi the individual is not as bad as Bonds. Not sure I buy into the idea that Giambi owned up to much of anything… at least not entirely. Some vague statements and an apology for something. Probably safe to say that if he was not exposed (or his testimony wasn’t exposed), he would not have outted himself. See also Petttitte, Andy. Even decent guys will flaunt the rules.

  117. Tint July 7th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

One thought on AROD divorce and that’s it for me: Is it possible that AROD knows that the second child is not his? I mean he missed the birth and has seen very little of her. Just a thought…

  120. saucY July 7th, 2008 at 5:30 pm

didn’t read all these comments, but just want to say Jon Miller is easily my favorite national broadcaster of baseball. He doesn’t over do it like nearly every other play-by-play guy and he’s probably the most neutral of any of them.

one of the very few reasons to like an ESPN game…

  121. saucY July 7th, 2008 at 5:32 pm

oh, and i think i must have voted 40 times for Giambi and Burrell. i kept thinking that after my next vote, an error would come up saying that i’ve reached the limit.

i need to set up one of those bird toys to keep voting for me all day like when homer simpson was working from home.
