Lohse has pitched well for St. Louis this year but his career prior to this year has been highly mediocre. I don't know why he would have signed for cheap with the yankees unless guaranteed a place in the starting rotation and why would we have wanted to block Hughes or Kennedy based on what we saw from them last year to give Lohse a spot. You can say it would have worked out better in hindsight but its hard to have thought that would have been a good move.

Garza wasn't a free agent and cost the Rays Delmon Young. Who would you have traded to get Garza? I don't see a match there.

With the lineup aging, i think some of the injuries were predictable. Our pitching (at least the injured parties) are mostly young though so I think that was a bit of bad luck to lose both Hughes and Wang.

"Someone Else,

You’re right it’s wayyy too early to call Kennedy a bust.

But it’s certainly not too early to call a bust Cashman’s decision to hand Kennedy a rotation spot on a silver platter based on only the 19 innings he pitched last year. Kennedy pitched only 34 innings above AA ball before being handed a spot. The Yanks have not developed Kennedy as much as they have forced him through a funnel.

Yes, they are now making Kennedy work his way back, but their initial decision has impacted the ‘08 season. It was a huge tactical blunder."

Because the Yankees should have signed a Silva or Livan instead?

"I would love to know, Eugie, what you think the Yanks starting nine and starting five should have been in 2008. I mean you write as if with a magic wand, a semi-competent GM could have sent out the 2008 AL All-Star team or something.

Give me the 2008 starting nine and starting five pitchers if you were the GM."

How about you pay me that Cashman money and then I'll tell you what I would have done.

Joel Sherman's article in the Post over the weekend should fulfill your need to know.

I know people are sick of the pro-/anti- Livan debate, but I had to look up the numbers again to see for myself, and I thought that people might be interested:

Livan
WHIP 1.590
ERA 5.18
43 Ks in 116 1/3 innings

By comparison:

Rasner
WHIP 1.500
ERA 4.94
40 Ks in 62 innings

"Believe me - i have no interest in entering into the fray of the Livan Hernandez debate one way or another."
cb-
i know what you mean . which ever side you take can be embarrassing.

all kidding aside, livan is actually interesting to watch as a baseball fan.

i saw him strike out 4 hitters in a row last week and i don't think one pitch went over 84mph.

Niekro threw almost 350 in 1979. So he averaged less than a hit an inning. Livan's average would be quite as good.
