Support The ‘Stache update

070608_18311.jpgMuch like Grey Goose and Red Bull, Jason Giambi’s ’stache is a sensation that is sweeping the nation.

I snapped this exclusive cell phone photo of some fans at the game on Sunday wearing their own ’staches as tribute to The Big G. Hopefully more people will join in tonight and tomorrow.

The ’stache even has its own blog. These guys are giving away fake mustaches. How great is that?

In the interest of historical accuracy, I asked The Big G on Sunday when he started growing the ’stache. We came to the conclusion that it was roughly May 23. Here are his stats in the 40 games he has played since:

PA: 158
AB: 129
R: 28
H: 39
2B: 7
3B: 1
HR: 10
RBI: 32
BB: 20
SO: 27
BA: .302
OBP: .424
SLG: .605
OPS: 1.029

Pretty impressive. Perhaps all the Yankees should try it.

Voting for the final spot on the AL All-Star team runs through Thursday at 5 p.m. You can click the widget over to the right to vote.

Tell Jeter too. It is all about team unity! At least try it, Damon did!

I have a stache but it’s always neatly trimmed. It would take me approximately 2 years and 8 months to get a moustache that robust.

I hope he never sneezes with that thing on his face. Can you imagine how messy that could be?

  3. Joba the Gut

Thanks for the link to vote for Jermaine Dye!

    Keep up the good work!

  4. kimmiebruce

The blog is just too funny. Equally amusing (or scary, depending on your perspective) was a woman with a fake (I think) Giambi ’stache dancing on the fan cam between innings during Saturday’s game. A new fashion trend to sweep the nation?

The Steinbrenners and Cashman should grow a mustache. Then, they will pull a big deal adn give up like nothing. Hank would look like a dictator.

  6. Bronx Bomber

how many hgh injections since 5/23?

  7. YankeesTech

Why is cashman babying Phil Hughes? He won’t throw in minor league games until August? what kind of bs is that?

  8. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache'

    Yankees Tech,

Well Cash is trying to see that his injuries stay at a minimum.

CC Sabtathia will be a Yankee in 2009

“Why is cashman babying Phil Hughes? He won’t throw in minor league games until August? what kind of bs is that?”

What if he comes back too soon and gets reinjured again. That wouldn’t make you happy would it?

  10. Jorge Steinbrenner

i would understand if Phil Hughes were only 21, and there was no hurry to rush him this time around, but he’s…..oh wait…..

  11. JR

And to think he spent all those years on juice when all he needed was a muzzy

  12. S.A.- Just win games and can the offense stop being so offensive?

His lip fur is sweeping the nation..

  13. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache'

Actually Jorge, I believe he is 22, or will be 22 soon. But come the middle to end of August early Sept. We wont need Ponson or Rasner and well have Chamberlain Pettitte Mussina Hughes Pavano (I get heartburn thinking of it) and Wang at the end of Sept (hopefully) so lets not rush Hughes, its not like were in desperation mode yet. Also, Aveceves could come up and help right?

Good News Whitey Ford must be doing better

Cal and his brother and fellow major-league vet Billy Ripken will host their weekly XM show “Ripken Baseball” at the XM broadcast booth in the convention center this Saturday 10-11 am ET. The Ripkens’ guests will include the Yankees’ Hall of Famer Whitey Ford.

  15. S.A.- Just win games and can the offense stop being so offensive?

He turned 22 a week or two ago..

  16. Goose

I tried to vote, but couldn’t read that validation code. I can’t make out what one of number is. either 4 or 6. Ugh, who cares. Stupid website.

  17. 27 this year

People, stop posting on this site. If you have time, get your butt to voting!!!!!!!!

  18. whozat

“Why is cashman babying Phil Hughes? He won’t throw in minor league games until August? what kind of bs is that?”

He hasn’t even gotten back on a mound yet. He didn’t throw for what, a month and a half? He couldn’t even really do any upper body stuff without setting back the rib injury. He pretty much has to go through spring training all over again. How did you think this was going to work?

  19. gayle

Sorry catching up on my blog reading and noticed that Tyler Kpener blog has Milton Bradley blogging about the all star game for them. Have to say his first entry was powerful. Say what you will about him temper or other issues he is having a fantastic year and it seems he has found someone special with Ron Washington.

  20. 27 this year

BTW I have nothing against this site. I love it. I just think right now, the stache needs to be in NY on the 15th

  21. Rishi

    27 – I’m with you – been voting all morning…

  22. Fredo Corleone

    50/50

  23. Steve

I will say that Longoria and Dye have been slightly better than Giambi, however, Giambi is cooler than them. And I want to see him in the home run derby.

And as for the snarky guy who made the comment about HGH. Who cares? Baseball players could all be shooting horse jizz for all I care.

  24. bigjf

I expect Aceves by August, if not sooner (and with Ponson pitching against the Rays tomorrow, it better be sooner).

All they’ll need after that is Sal Fasano to do the PA announcing.

  25. saucY

gayle, i read that Milton Bradley blog entry this morning. Good stuff. and Washington seems like a good guy too. No wonder Giambi likes him so much.

  26. YankeeFan4Eva

Voted like a 100 times today.. Guys and Gals lets get the Stache in!!!!!

  27. bigjf

And I just noticed Aceves is on the minor league DL. His last game was the 22nd?

Maybe I missed something, but is the injury serious? I was hoping on El Duque Dos with this guy.

  28. sfill

I am going to the stadium in 3 weeks, I am SOOOOO getting one of those shirts! Maybe by then, they will be mass-produced and all the street vendors will have them!!

  29. Lori

We were at the game on Friday, and there were two little boys — maybe 5 or 6 — dancing around with fake Giami ’staches every time he came up to bat. Adorable!

  30. Joey Donz

    ABVG!!! Always Be Voting Giambi!

  31. Schuyler

Is there anywhere online where we can get up-to-date vote standings? Does Giambi have a chance or his he trailing Dye by that much?

  32. Lori

We need to get a better picture of Giambi on the widget – no ’stache!

  33. CM

I like the mustache, but I much prefer a moustache.

  34. YankeeFan4Eva

is there somewhere we can see the number of votes each player has? I think the public should see them.

  35. zach

with playing the rays hopefully sid barfight ponson can shut down longoria and giambi can hit 4 homers this series

  36. Jensen

Despite the fact that he wears pinstripes, I don’t really want to vote for a guy who has used steroids, has a hulking multi-million dollar contract, and can’t field his position.

Sure the “’stache” is cute, and we all had a chuckle about the infamous thong, but compare Giambi to the rookie Longoria, who is an excellent fielder (see the recent game against the Red Sox at the Trop), is hitting well for a scrappy, young, fun-to-watch, first-place team, and has a bright future.

How long ago was Giambi one of the contracts that Yankees fans couldn’t wait for the organization to unload?
