A few random postgame notes

Peter Abraham
July
9

* Robinson Cano is batting .407 in July (11 for 27).

* Jose Molina had his caught-runners-stealing streak stopped at 12; it was the longest in the majors since 1993.

* Melky Cabrera snapped an 84 at-bat homerless streak and matched his career high with No. 8.

* Andy Pettitte’s 10th victory gave him his most wins prior to the All-Star break since 2003 when he was 11-6 at the break.

Thanks to Jason Latimer of the Yankees, the blog has obtained one of the Giambi Mustaches that will be given away at the game on Wednesday.

This is (well, maybe) one of the best souvenirs of the last season at Yankee Stadium. If nothing else it’s worth a laugh.

Check back tomorrow morning for a trivia question and try and be the lucky winner.

I already know the answer! Don Mattingly!

Pete, you can email me to find out where to send the ’stache.

I don’t know if the Melky homer is a good or bad thing. He seems to be trying to become a power hitter at the expense of plate discipline. He should just concentrate on taking pitches, working walks, and putting the ball in play. The homeruns will come later as his body fills out and as he gets more confident with his skills. Gotta walk before you can run Melkman.

  3. Nick in SF

No, you gottta walk and run before you can trot!

    Keep voting!

You know what we need to do? We need to tell Robbie that every month is July.

    Yeah, that should help.

  6. Edwar Fan Club

    Not too shabby, huh Pete?

lol, im going to be selecting my 2nd choice, scince my first choice lost a bitter race to another worthy candiate. i hope my subtley is noticed. lol

  11. j

    * i will be voting for the canidtae that beat my candiate

  12. Say it ain't so

In response to the couple of people in the previous thread talking about Molina doing better with the pitchers than Posada, take into account that Posada’s still injured. Also, just because the pitchers compliment Molina, it doesn’t make it a knock on Posada. Posada has gotten quite a few amazing games out of the pitching staff as well, and hopefully after he has his surgery he’ll be back to his old (young?) self for next season.

  13. Don Vito A. Bellamo

Is it tomorrow morning yet ? :-)

  14. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache'

Either Melky is trying too hard to not lose his spot (HR and 2 Ks) or he just isnt that good. Im not saying Gardner is the choice, but when he gets used to the major league pitching, and we all know he will, so far he has faced (Kazmir, Beckett, Masterson, Wakefield) in 4 of his 7 games. He wont be facing a combo like that very often in a 7 game span this season, so a .130ish BA facing those pitchers in his first week is to be expected. The kid has alot of talent and its mostly his legs that will make him achieve it. In 2-3 weeks when Gardner starts hitting, I wouldnt be surprised if Joe gives Melky more days off with Matsui and Damon back. Theres only so much you can do with 4 OFs and 2 DHs, and with Gardner up, theres no reason to have Damon play CF anymore.

  15. David Robertson for Setup - Vote for the 'Stache'

This proves how much of an idiot Aaron is

    What I said

Yeah, theres a chance him or Damon(hope not) get traded at the deadline. Doubtful, but still a chance

    What Aaron said

  18. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 13) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Ok, I figured it out, everyone saids Alex is an arms guy, but guy, nope the truth is he is an abs guy

This is the next girl that came out to the newspaper Alicia Marie supposively they “just friends”

    Alicia Marie (”Just Friends” girl)

Another words if you look like Trish Stratus, Torrie Wilson or Mia St.John Alex will tap that a$* so quick because the girly girl might not have enough stamina for him.

  19. ShamWow

Jetter has an answer for all you people who say he has lost his range.
“I don’t care,” Jeter said. “They can criticize all they want. My job is to play defense. Send ‘em a tape.”

  20. LathamJoe

This Game was for all those “Rotisserie GMs” that whine about:

“Jeter can’t play shortstop, has no range, blah, blah, blah.”

    “Trade Cano”

“Get rid of Melky, he’s terrible”

  21. 86w183

At least they count the votes in Chicago. I live in Florida and we can’t F$%#&!! count

  22. Jeremy

    LathamJoe,

Someone must have written this in response to Pete’s comment about Jeter’s range, but here goes:

Jeter does not lack range to his right. He is still capable of making the occasional spectacular play to his right, as we saw last night.

Jeter unquestionably lacks range to his left. He often doesn’t even appear in the shot when opposing players hit balls up the middle. He doesn’t make errors on these plays, he just doesn’t get anywhere near the ball.

I love his leaping throws as much as anyone. I hate how he rarely gets to balls hit up the middle.

  23. Steve

I’m glad Cano is hitting .407 and all that, but he hasn’t walked once. As soon as he gets hot and stays hot again, I would trade his luck dependant ass.

  24. Steve

Also, Jeter has been getting to a ton more balls up the middle this year. His zone rating this season is thoroughly respectable.
