Aceves pitches three innings for SWB

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 09, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Alfredo Aceves, who could figure into the mix in a few weeks, pitched three innings for Scranton tonight in his return from a groin pull.

He allowed two hits and struck out two against Toledo. Of his 49 pitches, 32 were strikes. Kei Igawa followed him to the mound. Brian Cashman said they want to get a “good look” at Aceves in Scranton before considering whether to call him up.

I get the impression in talking to Cashman that he feels they rushed too many guys through Triple-A before bringing them up (Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy, for instance) and wants to avoid that if possible.

Meanwhile, Joe Girardi joined the ‘stache crew today. I managed to clip this off his postgame interview with YES. That’s just the kind of thing Joe Torre would have done, right? Um, no. But Torre could have grown a mustache in two days if asked. The man gets 5 o’clock shadow at noon. 070908_21271.jpg

Thank goodness the Big G doesn’t have mutton chops.

Hey, Pete. Green Beret said Toronto broadcasters mentioned Halladay starting on Friday.

BTW, how do you pronounce “Aceces”?

  3. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot July 9th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

I still think Aceves may be replacing Rasner soon

  4. PJH July 9th, 2008 at 9:47 pm

No need to rush these kids. As Pete mentioned, Hughes was rushed a little and Kennedy was rushed a ton. Let Aceves get in a rythm in Scranton and if he is pitching well come August 1st, give him the call and see what he can give you.

  5. GreenBeret7 July 9th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Mel, that picture of Girardi looks suspiciously like a 1918 picture of the Bohemian Corporal.

  6. Oscar (Sox fan) July 9th, 2008 at 9:56 pm

Angel, I heard they are looking for good lawyers in the Ant- artic, Of course you don’t qualify!

Nick, What have the Yankees done for you lately except 1 and out! It’s been how many years? LOL

Gardner Running For Melkys Spot, Like I said earlier It will be Sox and Yank’s in the end, No nervousness here!

And as far as the trolling goes, This is America.
The definition of trolling is actually fishing off the back of a boat while moving. Not a word made up by Yankee fans.
    Let’s be ORIGINAL bloggers.

    Green Beret,

I don’t know who the Bohemian Colonel is, but I have the sudden urge to eat some pizza. All Girardi’s missing is the bandana around the neck.

  10. Old Goat July 9th, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Remember, that while Aceves hasn’t been with the Yankees that long, he was already playing in Mexico at the AAA level. The Yankees can’t keep Rasner going much longer, IMO, he was fine for a few starts, but the league caught up pretty quick to him. Long relief is more likely for Rasner.

Who knows how well Aceves can do, but he probably doesn’t need to be in AAA much longer before giving him a start. The injury and his not being on the 40 man is what is holding him up.

I’m up to 1,800 votes for Longoria.

  13. Old Goat July 9th, 2008 at 10:07 pm

Aceves is 26 also, so he isn’t as young as Kennedy and Hughes. Those few years can mean a big difference.

  14. BX. 12 Fordham Road July 9th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Aceves is not a kid either, nor is he any long term front of the rotation guy….bring him up and move Rasner along….these guys are stop gap canno fodder….it is not like rushing a real prospect high draft pick along….

Send Karstens back up…load up the Scranton shuttle

Freddy Garcia…come on down Sept. 1….

Oscar is just a little nervous that his team is only 4.5 games up. He wants to bust our nuts. He knows not 1 of those Red Sox players should be starting the game next tuesday

  21. Mop Up Man July 9th, 2008 at 10:18 pm

Any intelligence on Aceves? Anyone seen him pitch? What does he throw? Movement? Break? Speed differential between pitches?

This team has quite a few holes to fill, including shaky 4 and 5 starters, not to mention the possibility of a Moose regression in the 2nd half, and lingering questions in the late inning relief corps.

They’ve played a great 4 days of baseball though. Hopefully these close game wins are Girardi’s philosophy taking root.

  22. Old Goat July 9th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

Oscar, with they way you type, I doubt you could possibly have that many votes in. I type quite fast. Just spending a ton of time voting on Giambi over posting on here.

  23. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot July 9th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Text messaging, Is it an extra charge for the voting, or can I do it with unlimited text messaging?

  24. Old Goat July 9th, 2008 at 10:21 pm

MUM, Aceves is more a control type pitcher. He was very dominating in Mexico, works both sides of the plate.

You wouldn’t pick him for the front of the rotation. You don’t need that for every rotation slot anyway. The biggest question with him will be how he does vs. Major League batters.

  25. Oscar (Sox fan) July 9th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

And Jeter should be starting just because he plays in NY? I think not! Who’s place is he taking?
It’s a popularity contest and I guess more Red Sox players are more popular than Yankee players, obviously.
Like I said earlier no nervousness here,Looking forward for the Sox and Yanks in the play-offs.

Right now, you are on two blogs: a red sux one to piss of them and this blog to piss us off. Have fun with your worthless life. End of discussion.

  27. Frankie speaking .... July 9th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

Early August will do just fine for Aceves getting called up.
Ponson will likely get at least 2 more starts and with some hot bats for run support, Rasner could survive.
It all bides time until Wang and Hughes are through rehabbing.
The very little in the way of trades for starting rotation help. Cashman can concentrate on a RH bat and a lefty reliever

Hey Oscar, name an AL SS with numbers wwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy better than Jeter. He may not be doing amazing but he is up there unlike your feakin Tek who happens to be one of the worst catchers in the league. Posada is better and his arm is like dead: he can throw out more runners from his knees than Tek could do on a pitchout.

And Oscar if you were on here on Sunday you would have heard 99% of the people here say that Young would be very deserving of the all-star game start. Certainly more deserving then “captain tek”

  31. Old Goat July 9th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

Im excited for David Ortiz first swing and miss which is going to fu-ck up his wrist and he’s out for the season. Only a matter of time before the Sox show weakness from Ortiz being out.

  33. Jackie V. July 9th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

    Oscar -

Like any team, the Socks have holes but none more glaring than their fans, yourself included.

  34. 27 this year July 9th, 2008 at 10:27 pm

I don’t think a RH bat is something of big concern. I think it was just a rough patch for us. After all, every year before this, our lineup was like the same and we dominated lefties. More concern is with the rotation regardless of how well it does. There is always upgrades and you can’t expect this production through the season. Moose is great but he will regress a little and be an effective 4-4.5 ERA rather than the sub 4 right now. He won’t be bad at all but not as great as now.

  35. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 July 9th, 2008 at 10:27 pm

I won’t elaborate on what I think the Tek “C” truly stands for. Let’s hope home field for the AL in the WS doesn’t come down to his “talents” with the bat or glove.

Old Goat, thanks for the Aceves tip. Sounds like he’s another potential spot starter, like Rasner, but not a real force in the making.

    Put on your GM caps:

Newsday reporting Freddy Garcia will do a work out for teams in 2 weeks.

It has also been reported that Pavano threw 30 pitches yesterday in BP.

Sources say that the Yanks may be players for Garcia.

If both are ready to go at the same time, would you go with Pavano because the money has already been invested in him or go with Garcia and add to payroll?

  46. whozat July 9th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

“And Morneau has twiice as many errors!”

Because he gets to more balls, or because his 3B is worse at throwing. Morneau and Youk are both top three in runs added when you take both offense and defense into account. So don’t get all high and mighty.

  79. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 13) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP) July 9th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

To be fair the strikeouts were forced by the umpire, both the K’s Brett took was ball 3 and ball 4.

    A few other things.

    1. Ryan Howard is superman w/ men on bases, Shelley Duncan w/no one on.

    2.

According to Thunder manager Tony Franklin, Yankees reliever Brian Bruney will be making a start for the Thunder on Saturday.

“From what I’m told, he’s on his way,” Franklin said.

“I think he’s going to start for us. We welcome him. I don’t know how many innings he’s going to throw, I don’t know how many pitches he’s allowed to throw. But he’s coming.”

Bruney may be in Trenton as early as tomorrow. Chase Wright will follow him, and will not be bumped a day.

If I didn’t know any better I’d say they are converting him either to a SP or are just stretching him out to get to the big club quicker. :?

Zambrano – 2007 (last time in the bigs) 10.17 ERA and 45 ERA+

But Gardner has faced, Beckett, Wakefield, Masterson, and Kazmir in the last week, give him a break. He went from 2 fire ballers, to a knuckleballer, to a fire baller in a 4 game stretch when he has been up for a week.

He has the game winning RBI on Sat, and got the winning hit in the 10th on Sunday against one of the best closers in the game.

Gardner strikes out a lot for a guy with no power. That’s one of the reasons expectations for him need to be more reasonable than a lot of people are making them.

  90. whozat July 9th, 2008 at 11:11 pm

“Dont you think the Phillies say that about Ryan Howard too?”

That’s a mindblowingly invalid comparison. Howard gets extra-base hits. He can drive guys in from first and second base. Gardner can’t. His stolen bases do not make up for it. Howard can be productive despite his huge K rate. Gardner MUST get on base in order to be productive. His K rate is a big problem; pitchers are coming right at him and they’re not going to walk him anymore.

    Oscar,

2004 is only a few years ago, that was the Red Sox first big season, so they havent done S##t up until that point. They have won 2 in the last 4 years. The Yankees as you know full well dominated the last 80 years or so. depending on how old you are, you had to experience their dominance.
Red sox payroll is up there pretty good too.
What has been a big difference with your team is luck. You got extremely lucky with Mike Lowell as a thow in, and with Okajima as a throw in, and maybe J D Drew as a throw in. Lets not forget the luck, when your team put Manny on waviers and nobody took him. You were lucky he came back and was productive.

    Yankee Lover,

You are exactly right in some respects. The Sox picked up Mike Lowell at the time simply so they could get Beckett. I don’t think anyone is the Sox management would have predicted that Okajima would have been as effective as he was last year.

JD Drew was not a “throw in”. He has a big contract and the Sox purposely pursued him, much to the chagrin of Sox fans last year but he has worked out well this year.

Certainly the Yankees have been the dominant team in the history of baseball, but I think a valid question is how many of the current Yankees played on any on those championship teams?

I could be wrong but I am guessing only Jeter, Posada, Rivera, and Pettite.

  147. yankee lover July 9th, 2008 at 11:35 pm

Ray, thats correct. You can look at your two WS championship rosters and see that there was a lot of turnover with your team. I dont know what point you were making about the Yankees having only 4 left from the last championship. I would expect that since its been a while. Keep in mind that while they did not win for a while they a few near misses. They also have been one of if not the best and most consistant at getting to the playoffs. I dont know if this fits you, but heres what cracks me up about “some ” red sox fans. I hope the Red sox are good and competitive every year, its makes it fun and enjoyable to have that rivalry mean soemthing. In the 60`s we were awful, and without dating myself there wasnt these playoff type atmosphere games against Bosox. Its a great thing, but hoping the Yankees stink, and getting that wish granted, will make for a boring season. Theres nothing better than Red Sox Yankees when both are contenders. No other baseball teams have that, (expect maybe Chicago-St Louis) but both are inconsistent. The Mets wish they had something like that. I cant count Atlanta because a rivalry means that you win some of them and we all know the Mets always lose to Atlanta

Rishi, I have to admit that you make a very valid point. I have visited this blog for about two years and I have unfortunately seen a lot of Sox fans come on here and just talk nonsense or even worse.

And Yankee Lover, you make many good points. I acknowledge that the Yankees have by far been in the playoffs, world series, etc. far more than the Red Sox or any other team and have enjoyed great success, and there is something indeed to be said for the times that both teams are competitive because that is when it is really interesting!

  170. Rishi July 9th, 2008 at 11:51 pm

Question: does the resulting run count for less if the hit was “lucky”? And does anyone really even care?

Honest question from reading the blog, Pete. You seem to, deep-down, dislike Joe Girardi. I’m wondering if it was due to something that he did to you in an interview as a player, or what, but it really comes through in anything you write about the man. You went after him for wearing a fake mustache. That doesn’t seem, youknow, REALLY petty? At all? Really?

I’m just curious- I mean, anything this overt HAS to have a backstory, right? I look forward to reading it!

  177. Nick in SF July 9th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

For most of all of our lives the rivalry was diminished by the Sox’s perpetual, agonizing, oft-repeated failures. When one team wins so many times and the other loses over and over through decades and generations and lifetimes, the rivaly is too one-sided.

Now, finally, the Sox have won a couple times and the rivaly and competition have been enhanced. Of course they’ll never catch up, but yes, it does make things more interesting.

I’m not dissing Gardner at all or saying who is better because I think Gardner is an exciting young player with speed and other tools.

It just seems that if we are really comparing players Gardner and Ellsbury bring the same kind of energy and quickness to their respective teams.

Who’s going to stop them? The two teams ahead of them that have been playing way above what they actually are? How is a team like the Rays with a pedestrian offense and a team like the Red Sox with a non-existent bullpen going to hold off the Yankees? It’s really only a matter of time until both the Red Sox and the Rays fall. You can’t play above your actual ability for much more than those two teams have.
