The Rays are in first but the Yankees took care of them last night. Brian Heyman has the story.

Jason Giambi, fashion icon? This notebook also has updates on Hideki Matsui, Carl Pavano (yep) and the rotatation.

I hope the promos at the Stadium today give Giambi the push he needs!

  2. Run Gardner Run

I love how Giambi is referring to himself in the 3rd person.

Hopefully Matsui can come back when Damon gets back

Sucks that Hughes keeps getting pushed further and further back.

Maybe Pavano can contribute more than Ponson or Rasner

So when is Rasners last chance? He hasnt done well in a month and yet Girardi keeps giving him more chances

  3. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot

I love Day games when I dont have to work

  4. bardos

you know i think posada should have had the operation already. then he’d have all the time in the world to rehab. he’s really worthless this year as he is.

  5. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot

Well if he gets the operation after the season, he helps us (more than Molina would) and still have 4 months to heal.

  6. DFox

Um bardos, he went 2/3 tonight and is batting .288. How is that worthless? Not many other catchers can do that when they are completely healthy. Look at Capt. Varitek lol.

  7. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot

there are 2 reasons why I think the Rays wont win the division

    1. They are young and inexperienced, I believe 2-3 players on their roster have ever been to the playoffs. So they have never experienced the heat of trying to win in August and September

    2. They have 12 games (6 against each) against the Red Sox and Yankees in August, 4 against the Twins, and 4 against the Tigers to end the season. They also end the season playing 19 games in 18 days, 14 of which against playoff hunting teams. Also, 17 of 27 games in September are away from Tampa, and the Rays are 19-20 in away games. Also 13 of 28 games in August are away from Tampa Bay.

In August and September, out of 55 games in 61 days, they play 38 games against teams over .500 right now

38 out of 55 games against teams .500 or above right now. And 19 of them are away.

I would say the tables are stacked against them.

  8. TurnTwo

every time you post here, go to the widget and vote for Giambi 5 times.

people, lets all get to work. gotta have the Big G in the Derby.

  9. TurnTwo

“I would say the tables are stacked against them.”

and i would say theyve been stacked against them all season.

forget the Rays and hoping for their collapse.

worry about the yankees and playing more games the rest of the season like yesterday. if they do that, they’ll make the playoffs, no matter if its the Division or Wild Card.

  10. CM

    Gardner running -
“there are 2 reasons why I think the Rays wont win the division”

You forgot 3. A staff of young pitchers that hasn’t thrown 200 innings in a season having to finish the season on the road against their inter-division rivals.

And, as of right now, the Rays are one game under .50 on the road.

    Let’s go Sir Sidney!!!

(Then off to the Blueclaws this evening. Hello, centerfield tiki bar!)

  11. DMan

Yankees just need to keep on winning. We can worry about the other teams all we want, but it comes down to the Yankees keeping up their winning ways.

  12. CM

TurnTwo - “worry about the yankees and playing more games the rest of the season like yesterday. if they do that, they’ll make the playoffs, no matter if its the Division or Wild Card.”

I also agree wholehearteedly with that, and considering the amount of games the Yanks have head-to-head against both the Rays and Sox, we are far from out of this. If Ponson and the boys can get it done today, as well as the Twins, we’re 6.5 out in the division and 3.5 out in the Wild Card by dinnertime.

  13. 86w183

Yanks are in reasonably good shape, but it would be good to see the Rays stagger to the All-Star break so doubt can begin creeping in….

If Percival stays out and Wheeler becomes the closer, so much the better.

Still there will be no post-season with Rasner and Ponson both staying in the rotation. Not sure what the options are, it may well be someone from the group of Kennedy, Hughes and (gulp!) Pavano but I think something has to change there.

  14. Y's Guy - real fans stand up!

big win last night and another big game today. the yanks are on the edge of being in or out of the postseason race and can’t let these opportunities slip away. treading water now and hoping they can go undefeated in september is not going to work. waiting for wang and hughes to rescue the rotation isnt gonna work either. they need to win now with the guys they have. the offense is gonna have to carry ponson and rasner and moose, andy and joba are going to have to keep winning. this is doable but they need to start now, this rotation isnt good enough to run off long winning streaks, they need to win each series and work their way back into a playoff spot slowly, it may take from now till september to do it, but the sooner they start the better. and there is no better way to start than by sweeping the rays, even if it’s a 2 game series.
Big game today, rally caps and fake staches and lucky shirts need to be in play. an appearance by the sqirrel wouldnt hurt either!

    Let’s Go Yankees!!!!!

  15. Bronxbyte

With the slightest sign of weakness by Ponson the bullpen can be emptied right down to Mo with a day off coming tomorrow. Even Hawkins could be used for a hitter or two.

  16. randy l

“Pettitte has won 20 games in the past calendar year, joining Brandon Webb (22) as the only pitchers to do so, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.”

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2008/07/07/2008-07-07_spring_fight_just_training_for_yankeesra.html

now that is a very surprising stat. andy as ace?

on another note molina is huge in shutting down the running game . his 12 in a row throwing out streak was the longest since the 70’s.

with the cutting down on PEDS, the running game is making a comeback. for every ellsbury and gardner that make it now, a young catcher with an arm is going to be needed to counter them.

the yankees really should be looking now for catchers with a gun even if they only hit .220 because the trend is going to be towards more stealing.

the ideal yankee young catcher would also be a left handed hitting catcher or switch hitter but that’s pushing it.

  17. Doreen

I’m usually fairly optimistic and I’m a firm believer in “on any given day, any given team can beat another given team.” But I have to admit that it seems unlikely that this team with Rasner and Ponson will be able to pull off an extended winning streak. But, who knows? Maybe Rasner re-figures it out, and Ponson seems to have a 50-50 shot every time he pitches.

But more games like last night would be nice (shutouts optional). Hey, I read this morning that last night was the first time the Rays have been shut out since April. Pretty neat, I think. I hope the guys got a good night’s sleep last night and are ready to roll this afternoon.

The busiest man in the oganization right now should be Cashman scanning all rosters for available help.
He’ll come face to face with some GM’s coming to the Bronx for the All Star break.
There’s 4-5 Yankees on the bubble that will not make it to August 1st, one way or another.

  19. pat

    Bronxbyte

No off day tomorrow. They play the Pirates rain out game make-up tomorrow night.

  20. E

bronxbyte - no day off tomorrow, we have a makeup against pittsburgh. we can still use our bullpen plenty though as it was hardly used last night at all.

  21. Russell NY

Gardner needs to get on base a bit more. Try bunting him, bringing in the fielders, then slapping the ball. Nice hustle bunt by him yesterday.

  22. Y's Guy - real fans stand up!

bronxbite - no day off tomorrow, rainout makeup in pittsburgh.

  23. pat

Beating the Rays today would clearly help the Yanks in the standings but maybe just as important is it might plant a little seed of doubt in the Rays mind that doesn’t seem to be there this year. Both are important.

  24. Russell NY

“There’s 4-5 Yankees on the bubble that will not make it to August 1st, one way or another.”

Yanks should look for a Melky replacement if Damon is too injured. Matsui can’t play outfield for the rest of this year with his knee.

  25. stu

We keep holding our breath when the Sidney Ponson’s of the world take the mound … hoping against hope that they wont implode, yet down on the farm in Trenton Jason Jones continues to dominate … won again last night … 6 shutout innings … overall record 10-3 with an ERA a shade over 2.50. Why arent the Yankees promoting someone like him to AAA SWB? Doesnt make sense … he is 26 years old, not 21 … now would be a good time to push the envelope with him and see what he can do against higher quality hitting.

  26. TurnTwo

“on another note molina is huge in shutting down the running game . his 12 in a row throwing out streak was the longest since the 70’s.”

and yet, i was crucified the other day for saying that Molina should be considered the everyday catcher at this point.

this lineup best works with Jorge as DH and Giambi at 1B… we’re going to run into a serious log jam when Matsui and Damon come back… then youve basically got Damon to play LF, and Matsui and Posada splitting time at DH, and Posada and Giambi splitting time at 1B, maybe?

Girardi is going to have to get creative, thats for sure.

  27. Russell NY

“We keep holding our breath when the Sidney Ponson’s of the world take the mound … hoping against hope that they wont implode, yet down on the farm in Trenton Jason Jones continues to dominate”

Just a guess, but you might want to keep your AA guys dominating and leave that question looming if he can face AAA hitters or not. Maybe the Yankees have evaluated him and decided that he has faced some luck and inexperienced hitters which has led to his success and might try to shop his numbers before the trade deadline? Sell high.

  28. jennifer

Is there nothing else going on in the world that the NY junk papers continue to put that garbage on the front page? It isn’t worthy enough to line my birds cage.

  29. Fred Zeppelin

Yankees.com just broke a story that Hank Steinbrenner’s just announced that if Mustache Night goes well and Jason Giambi gets voted into the All Star Game, than Carl Pavano’s return will be celebrated with Neckbrace Night, which will in turn create support and good tidings for the possibility of successive starts by Carl Pavano in a Yankees uniform.

About Pavano’s return, “Girardi said he has no expectations. ‘But you never know,’ he said.” Isn’t this sort of like saying, “Yes, we’ll be playing tonight’s game on green grass tonight” or “We plan on wearing the uniforms with the thin stripes for this game”? I mean, it’s not exactly news to people, you’re not going to get the answer that would sound honest and interesting to people, so why bother asking? Stick to the hard-hitting stuff like asking Jeter how he’s getting along with Alex, or what model he’s dating this week - the reporter would get a more substantial answer.

  30. Bronxbyte

    E -

May bad. The strategy now changed to smart bullpen management with Pittsburgh tomorrow.

  31. CM

YOu guys can hammer Melky for his hitting all you want, he’s made a couple of plays in the field that have added to the ‘W’ side of our ledger, even if he doesn’t get it done at the plate. We have 3 outfielders (2 on the DL) who are great hitters and subpar fielders. What’s wrong with keeping one with the opposite inclination?

Remember why the Rays are in first place: pitching and defense. A lineup with Jeter, A-Rod, Giambi, Abreu, Posada, Cano, and Damon should be able to score runs with my 8 year old nephew batting ninth.

  32. Y's Guy - real fans stand up!

    turn two,

i agree, molina is the starting catcher and quite an asset against the speed tampa has.

im not too worried about what’s going to happen if everyone comes back. IF that happens, gardner goes back to scranton, damon is the lf and he can spread matsui, giambi, posada and molina out over 3 lineup spots. i think girardi hasnt gotten enough credit for getting alot of production out of damon, matsui, posada and giambi by getting them regular days off. consisering their ages and physical problems the extra days off have really helped.

getting matsui back, even as a bench player would be huge for this team.

  33. TurnTwo

“Gardner needs to get on base a bit more. Try bunting him, bringing in the fielders, then slapping the ball. Nice hustle bunt by him yesterday.”

after getting a chance to watch him now for a handful of games, you can see why he’s destined to be a bench/role player.

there’s no question his speed can be an asset to any MLB team, and he can play some defense, has a pretty accurate arm.

he’s a smart player, good attitude, always hustles. does the little things, like get a bunt down, can steal a base.

but the dude cant hit. Ken Singleton has brought up the fact that Gardner kind of defaults back into a swing where he only uses his upper body, and when you neglect to include your lower body in your swing, you cant drive the ball at all.

forget the doubles and triples that would help his slugging percentage, he’s been lucky to get the ball to the OF grass so far, let alone drive the ball down the line, or into the gaps.

now, if Kevin Long can get him to develop his lower body a little more and include it into his swing, he’s got a shot.

and i know this is all based on a small sample size, but right now i dont see him being a fairly productive everyday player at this point.

  34. JoeyA

Pete, heard you on ESPN yesterday. Great soundbite. Was that your first appearance on Sportscenter?

I bought 3 tickets from a scalper last night. 3 $55 seats for $80. Word to the wise: The closer it gets to gametime, the lower the prices go. I waited until midway thru the 2nd to start screamin’ “Need 3!!”.

Anyway, last ngiht was a huge win and a confidence boost. Bigger than the win was the fashion in which it was won. No slugfest, just good ol’ pitching and situational hitting. Gardner looked lost against a lefty ace, but you can’t blame him. Sopmebody needs to take Melky Cabrera, during the ASB, and do bunting drills every day! Also, Molina as an everyday catcher is no good, but what Girardi should be doing is playing Molina against running teams. It makes the most sense. Posada should never catch in any series against the Rays IMO. All in all, great win!

  35. pat

    CM

Can your nephew bunt? I kid because I love. If the bats are more hot than cold, there should be more than enough there to get the job done.

  36. Rob C

You guys think its worth heading to the stadium today to see if I can get a single ticket from a scalper? Or am I going to get ripped off bad?

  37. TurnTwo

“A lineup with Jeter, A-Rod, Giambi, Abreu, Posada, Cano, and Damon should be able to score runs with my 8 year old nephew batting ninth.”

yes, they should. but that doesnt mean they have to settle for your 8 year old nephew batting 9th, either.

now, if you dont have a legitimate upgrade, you keep Melky there. but if they feel they can upgrade CF, via the system or thru a trade, they shouldnt be afraid to do it.

  38. TurnTwo

    Y’s Guy, agreed.

Girardi has done a nice job of rotating the LF/DH/1B players into and out of the lineup this season. i’m sure that once Damon and Matsui are activated, Gardner and Christian will be sent down, and then called back up for any further injuries or Sept callups.

  39. retire #51

i know posada doesn’t hit as well at first (so he says.) but it would be really useful if girardi could get him more used to it. It is a better option to give giambi a rest than betemit. Plus if matsui and damon are back, it would be nice to rotate matsue/G/posada through the dh. matsui will never play the field. all we have to do his sit him here and there to allow giambi to dh, and posada can slot in at first. Also it is cool when posada/molina and the pitcher can all meet at the mound.

Also, one would hope posada could get used to 1b because it could be his position if his shoulder isnt 100% after surgery

  40. Don Vito A. Bellamo

I just voeted 100 times for Giambi…it really does not take that long….Be sure to uncheck the 2 boxes that will sign you up for stuff….if we all do this,,,he has a real good chance…… BIG GEE !!! :-)

  41. RER - 98

Cashman’s priorities by 7/31 if the Yankees are to make a run at the postseason :

    - A righthanded bat preferably Matt Holiday or Xavier Nady.

    - A lefthanded reliever preferably Damaso Marte.

    - The best righthanded starter from AAA or even AA. Nothing ventured - nothing gained. No quality RH starters left in MLB that will accept a deal to the Yankees or the asking price will be too high.

  42. John_Halfz

    TurnTwo:

Precisely. Anyway, the Yankees are scoring about 4.7 R/G this year. So before we talk about what their lineup can do, let’s just talk about what it has done.

If Melky’s a few runs below average (and he’s OPSing 669, which means he’d have to be Wilie Mays with more speed), and you have someone else better, you have to use that person.

More to the point, the only person who’s given them anything off the bench is Moeller (from whom you wouldn’t expect it). Ensberg was bad, and Duncan and Gonzalez were/are overmatched. The roster could definitely use someone who gets on base more than 31% of the time.

And don’t get excited about Jason Jones. High hit rates and low K rates don’t translate into anything better than Rasner. Probably worse.

  43. TurnTwo

right now, the yankees need real mlb pitchers to fill the 4th and 5th spots in the rotation. thats it.

they get some pitching, they’ll stay in games. then its up to the offense to drive in runners in scoring position.

if im cashman, im not sending away any major prospects for a bat, because if this team as constructed cant hit, they dont deserve to make the playoffs.

they dont have anywhere really to put a new bat in the lineup anyway.

  44. JoeyA

Rob C-do it! Very easy and you won’t get ripped if you are smart. Bring $40, and insist you only have 20. If they say 50, say 20 and stick with it. Like i said, the later into the game, the lower the price.

  45. John_Halfz

Holliday or Nady? Well, unless you’re going to sign Holliday to play in the outfield at Coors Field for you, I’ve got a feeling he’s overvalued. He’s still a great hitter, and he gets on base everywhere, but his home/road SLG deserves a loog

    Home: .638
    Road: .489

That’s still very nice, but it’s Johnny Damon territory, not A-Rod territory.

As for Nady, he’s kind of strange in that the best 290 AB stretch of his career has been this year. He’s also been very lucky, with a BABIP of around .360 (as of a few weeks ago). When he’s not hitting, he doesn’t get on base with any regularity. And he doesn’t get a lot of XBH either. As for that BABIP, he is hitting more line drives than ever, but he’s making much more contact on balls out of the strike zone than he ever has. I say: unsustainable and a potentially terribly trade if Pittsburgh gouges.

  46. YankeeFan4Eva

I voted about 100 times this morning and its not going to stop. I must have put in a good 500 votes for the STACHE!!!!

  47. John_Halfz

    TurnTwo:

Nailed it again. The team only needs pitching. At some point, Ohlendorf and Hawkins are through. They’re major contributors to the overall 97 ERA+. We have some options down on the farm that get more attractive as the year progresses.

And with Cano starting to hit, I’d say that the only thing I’d sink resources into is starting pitching help. One would hope that could be accomplished internally, esp. as Hughes and Kennedy (just on the basis of being out and “fresh”) would be candidates to provide innings. But Kennedy has been very pedestrian in his minor league starts, and Hughes keeps getting pushed back. Something will happen, though.

  48. Y's Guy - real fans stand up!

i never buy it when a player says he wont accept a trade to the yankees. roy oswalt said that earlier this year, then went back and started hinting that he wouldnt mind moving to a contender (while the stroh’s were playing the yankees), which prompted thier owner to say he wont let oswalt go (obviously scared that it could become an issue)
just about any playerr who’s out there on a losing team will change thier tune quickly when the idea of an a.l. east pennant race in front of millions becomes available to them. that being said, im glad that cc and harden (and johan) have moved over to the n.l. i would love to see cash find us a decent #4 type to shore up the rotation. i still think we have enough young pitching talent that making a big money play for an ace isnt called for.

this is just the frustrating part of develping youg talent, dealing with the injuries and inconsistency that comes with pitchers who are 22-23 yrs old. if you think about it, we had 3 very young pitchers who we thought could help the rotation this season and one of them has worked out very well, joba. i think one success out of three to this point is about what you expect. the strategy pays off long-term when either kennedy or hughes turns the corner and becomes a reliable mlb pitcher. it may seem like the strategy is a failure to this point, but in fact it is working about as well as you could hope for over the first couple of years. we just have to continue to be patient and not sell out the farm for another shiny new star to rescue us.

    keep the faith!

  49. retire #51

i agree, a bat is not worth it. unless obviously the a good price presents itself. however there are not many options to replace giambi and abreu next year. i think it it is reasonable to resign one or the other. if they plan on dumping abreu, then maybe a trade for nady is a good idea.

  50. Fredo Corleone

“right now, the yankees need real mlb pitchers to fill the 4th and 5th spots in the rotation. thats it.”

That assumes you get similar production from Mussina. History shows that’s unlikely. To wit:

    2003: 1st half ERA 3.04 2nd half 3.81
    2004: 1st half ERA 3.94 2nd half 5.25
    2005: 1st half ERA 3.52 2nd half 5.34
    2006: 1st half ERA 3.24 2nd half 3.96
    2007: 1st half ERA 4.62 2nd half 5.72

They may need more than just a 4 & 5.

  51. randy l

i think the point is being missed with gardener.

it’s not whether he’s going to be a starter or not.

the point is he creates problems for the other outfielders.

there are two competitions going on on every baseball team.

one is trying to beat the other team , and the other is trying to beat the guy taking your position.

no one likes to talk about it, but it’s there.

gardner puts pressure on melky, abreau, damon, and matsui becuse if he’s in the lineup a musical chairs thing happens and someone is odd man out.

no one wants to be that guy.

so it’s likely the other outfielders will play better with gardner’s presence.

  52. Fredo Corleone

“but the dude cant hit. Ken Singleton has brought up the fact that Gardner kind of defaults back into a swing where he only uses his upper body, and when you neglect to include your lower body in your swing, you cant drive the ball at all.”

Still have seen no evidence he can catch up to a major league fastball. It’s odd, because he appears to know what he’s doing, but he doesn’t seem physically talented enough to do it.

  53. Fredo Corleone

“gardner puts pressure on melky, abreau, damon, and matsui becuse if he’s in the lineup a musical chairs thing happens and someone is odd man out”

Hogwash. If Damon, Abreu, Melky and Matsui are healthy, the kid isn’t even up here. Only one even remotely should feel any pressure is Cabrera. Gardner represents ZERO threat to Abreu, Damon or Matsui. Posada’s inability to catch on a regular basis is a bigger threat to those guys than Gardner’s presence.

  54. TurnTwo

agreed, Fredo. there’s no doubt that Gardner knows what he’s doing, and he goes up to the plate with a plan on how to work the pitcher.

but he looked silly last night aganst Kazmir. now, Kazmir does that to a lot of established MLB’ers so its not just Gardner, but there was one good pitch he had a crack at when he was up with the runners in scoring position before ultimately striking out, and he had no chance at the fastball.

  55. Fredo Corleone

    Turn Two:

In Gardner’s walk off at bat Sunday night, he was hopeless against Papelbon’s fastball. Always late. To his credit, he frustrated Papelbon into throwing something offspeed, but he’s generally overmatched physically at the plate.

  56. Y's Guy - real fans stand up!

it was great listening to ken singleton at the mike last night. too bad murcer, his normal partner (when bighead is off) wasnt there, flaherty is informative but not very polished.

singleton never gets enough credit for his contribution to the yankees broadcasts. for one thing, he goes to all the places that kay wont, i.e. kansas city. his quiet but very knowlegable input, his laid back attitude is just SOOOO needed in a world of yankee brashness and endless self-promotion.
to me, kenny also embodies a minority in new york that is too often dismissed as nonexistent, he is a quiet and calm new yorker, a man of great accomplishment who is not a braggard. a decent guy who has a great sense of humor and isnt full of himself. and a guy who likes to recall his time spent as a young fan, just another new york kid like the rest of us who took advantage of any chance to catch a game with family and friends.

im really hoping bighead takes another powder today.

    GET WELL BOBBY MURCER!

  57. Patrick ™

Gardner always takes some time to adjust to a new level. I’m going to give him the rest of this season before I make many judgements. Even though he isn’t hitting much right now he still helps the team. The same can be said for Melky; when he isn’t hitting he still plays a great center field.

  58. 86w183

Yanks really need a decent RH bat and I think I found one in the minors.

Nelson Cruz is in Oklahoma City, blocked by the Texas Rangers’ outfield depth. He had decent numbers in a couple of big league stints and is just killing it in Triple-A this season, batting .343 with 28 HR and 73 RBI. He has walked 51 times giving him an OB % .444 and he’s slugging .689… that’s a 1.132 OPS

He’s 28 years old, a RH hitter and has 18 stolen bases.

He’s worth a look and he won’t cost much as an older minor leaguer. No, he’s not a savior, but could fill a major need rather affordably.

    thoughts?

  59. Doris From Rego Park

Ive killed Jeter all season, so I need to give him his props for a great game last night.

  60. Fredo Corleone

Generally agree Patrick, but a slow bat is a slow bat. He was a big whiff guy in AAA (bout 1 every 4 AB’s) and he’s proving to be that here. Definitely think he has some value to the team off the bench, but I’m with the Keith Laws of the world who believe he’s a 4th/5th outfielder in the bigs. Still, I’d give him til Matsui and/or Damon return to see what he might be able to offer.

  61. Fredo Corleone

“Nelson Cruz is in Oklahoma City”

    Classic AAAA player.

  62. Doris From Rego Park

Is it me, or has Cano turned into the best glove at 2nd in the AL?

  63. Y's Guy - real fans stand up!

    agree about jeter:

big game, big game player. he was everywhere last night. we will need alot more of that derrick the rest of the way to have a chance.

“Hogwash. If Damon, Abreu, Melky and Matsui are healthy, the kid isn’t even up here. ”

    hogwash to your hogwash.

    competition drives athletes.

one of the problems with the yankees is that too many players think they are locks for their positions.

one of billy martin’s skills was that he could make even a reggie jackson compete for his position.

you , fredo, are missing the very point i’m making. it doesn’t matter if the regulars are better. they have to earn it every day it. i would have played gonzales at 2nd long ago to push cano. i would have pinch hit for arod with runners on third and less than two outs late in a game. i would have benched giambi when he hit the right fielder when trying to throw to second.

these regulars need to find a way to improve what they suck at. does giambi make 100 throws a day to second. i doubt it. does arod practice shotening up and making contact when he needs to. no way. sits their butts down and put someone else in.

if it embarrasses them so much the better.

yankee players are way too happy and content. good for cows. bad for baseball players.

gardner’s presence signals a change in the thinking of the yankees.

“Is it me, or has Cano turned into the best glove at 2nd in the AL?”

He’s good but he isn’t nearly as good as Mark Ellis. Cano is probably second though.

“gardner’s presence signals a change in the thinking of the yankees.”

Were they thinking something like: “We have two injured outfielders. We better get one up from AAA”

    “competition drives athletes.”

Sure it does. Problem is Gardner is a Ma & Pa hardware store and Damon, Matsui and Abreu are Home Depot and Lowes

read: Gardner’s not a good enough player to represent real competition for those players.

    Fredo—-

Maybe, maybe not. In 307 AB for Texas last year Cruz had decent power stats — 9 HR, 34 RBI with a lousy BA .235

His Triple-A stats are far superior to anything Shelley Duncan ever put up, so what the hell… gotta get a RH bat somewhere… if ot him, who? I’ve lobbied for a guy like Nady.. even Juan Rivera would be useful.

you’ve been benched for broken record thinking. i’m reading Patrick ™ from now on.

i’ll check in next week to see if your posts get up to his level.

    see how competition works.

it doesn’t have to be fair. it doesn’t have to be logical.

it just has to be there.

even though you could care less what i think, i guarantee you try to make your next post better than you would have.

  69. Fredo Corleone

    Randy:

Big difference here is that Patrick is a solid poster. Well stated posts. Good grammar. Has knowledge of the game. Little mean streak here and there but not too mean.

Now if you threaten to bench me and all that’s left to read are morons who refer to the Sux and the Mutts or think that Jeter sits at the right hand of the Father, then I’m sleeping easy.

    Fredo-
    where do I rank?
