Final Vote ends at 5 p.m.

July
10

MLB put out this release earlier today. It doesn’t sound good for The Big G:

NEW YORK — The Monster 2008 All-Star Game Final Vote on MLB.com is down to its final seven hours before today’s 5 p.m. (EDT) deadline with the record-setting fan voting increasing to nearly one million votes cast every hour.

In the American League, a heated race for the top spot between Tampa Bay Rays rookie third baseman Evan Longoria and Jermaine Dye of the Chicago White Sox will go down to the deadline. Jason Giambi of the New York Yankees, Brian Roberts of the Baltimore Orioles and Jose Guillen of the Kansas City Royals continue to draw impressive fan support in their campaigns for the final spot on the A.L. All-Star Team.

On the National League ballot, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Corey Hart and David Wright of the New York Mets are locked in a tightly-contested competition as they enter the final hours of balloting. Philadelphia’s Pat Burrell remained in third place while Aaron Rowand of the San Francisco Giants and Carlos Lee of the Houston Astros follow in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Fans can also cast their votes via their mobile phones by texting the word “Vote” to 36197 to receive the Monster All-Star Game Final Vote candidates. In Canada, fans should text the word “Vote” to 88555.

    Oh well Longoria deserves it…

  2. j

    are there any replacements needed?

  3. JoeT 28 in 09!! LESS POSTING, MORE VOTING!! - .220 average, 17% CS = AL ALL STAR!!

What is this vote thing you’re talking about?? lol ugh, i’ve voted literally a couple thousand times. Even if Longoria makes the team I still think the Big G should make it in place of Ortiz

  4. gayle

Just heard on ESPN News (after Pete’s appearance) that the Mets fansite and the rays website have come together to vote for Wright and Longoria in order to keep Giambi off so…..

  5. al arodien

i am tierd of voting i voted 500 times or even more . tuff luck!
i have a question . Could he be in the home run derbey even if he is not on the all star roster?

  6. JoeT 28 in 09!! LESS POSTING, MORE VOTING!! - .220 average, 17% CS = AL ALL STAR!!

he can be in the derby but he said he’s only doing it if he’s on the team

  7. S.A.- Just win games and can the offense stop being so offensive?

Maybe we can join forces with a Phillies site to get the Big G and Burrell in?

  8. Yazman (David)

OK, sending some more votes. The Big G deserves it (and Longoria will have plenty of chances).

Any chance that a pitcher will beg out and Moose still gets in?

  9. saucY

is Milton Bradley even making it to the game? he sat yesterday with a bum knee…

  10. JoeT 28 in 09!! LESS POSTING, MORE VOTING!! - .220 average, 17% CS = AL ALL STAR!!

I was voting for Wright with Giambi – but screw that… way to help out your fellow NY team Mets

  11. mel

    pat,

I heard that, too. The question is who’s voting for Dye? Those Chicago people are nuts. They edged out Jeter one year.

  12. Yazman (David)

No good techies on the blog who’ve figured out how to vote a few hundred thousand times automatically? ;)

  13. JoeT 28 in 09!! LESS POSTING, MORE VOTING!! - .220 average, 17% CS = AL ALL STAR!!

Knicks hit with over 19 million in Luxury Tax…. money well spent

  14. saucY

“No good techies on the blog who’ve figured out how to vote a few hundred thousand times automatically? ”

i’ve been trying to think of something for days now. i guess i’m not a good enough ‘techie’…

  15. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 13) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Knicks hit with over 19 million in Luxury Tax…. money well spent

  16. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008

    Rigged.

And you actually expected Met fans to vote for our player? They are purely jealous of the Yankees and everything they stand for. Longoria had Met, Ray, and Red Sox fans voting for him, and probably 26 other teams, while were the only ones who voted for Giambi.

  17. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008

BTW, ill laugh when Wright doesnt get voted in

  18. raymagnetic ®™

“Knicks hit with over 19 million in Luxury Tax…. money well spent”

Look at the bright side, they signed Chris Duhon!

  19. Russell NY

“Even if Longoria makes the team I still think the Big G should make it in place of Ortiz”

The Big G is probably a better catcher than Varitek as well.

  20. Russell NY

Lets focus all our attention to voting for Corey Hart.

  21. J-Boogie

I didn’t expect the Big G to win this vote from the start. I have a feeeling he’ll be tabbed as Ortiz’s replacment. I think that’s one of the reasons why a replacement hasn’t been named. It’s gotta be the Big G. And when it is, mustache rides for everyone!!! Now they should make that a FanFest attraction. Jason Giambi mustache rides. Who wouldn’t want to ride a big hairy teeter-totter.

  22. JoeT 28 in 09!! LESS POSTING, MORE VOTING!! - .220 average, 17% CS = AL ALL STAR!!

It would be close, he can’t throw to second either…. he’d probably throw out better then 17% though… and definitely hit higher then .220

  23. Someone Else

“Lets focus all our attention to voting for Corey Hart.”

    I’ve been voting for Burrell.

  24. Joe from Long Island

I’m going to suggest something that might sound crazy….

The Yankees should look into Milton Bradley, either mid-season or as a FA next year.

I know, his reputation preceeds him. But if you look objectively at his performance, it’s kind of impressive. He’s going to be 31 next year; his stats point to a full season’s production of HRs in the mid-teens to 20, RBI 80 or so; good BA, OBP, slugging; switch hitter; and a fairly decent OF.

From what I’ve read about him, and this is just my reading the news stories over the years, he’s a good teammate. His problem is one of controlling his anger. But he’s a good ballplayer.

Could he handle NY? That’s the question. But he might be an upgrade over Bobby Abreu next year. I’m not anti-Abreu, but he will be 36, and Austin Jackson won’t be ready for the majors by April 2009. Bradley might be a reasonable alternative, at a reasonable price.

    Just something to think about.

  25. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 13) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Look at the bright side, they signed Chris Duhon!

Frank Williams would have been better than Chris Duhon

  26. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008

Giambi has been good in non contract years, so this may or may not be a fluke

Bradleys season thus far is 100% contract year ball

  27. Bomber11

    I did my part….atleast 250 votes in.

  28. Peter Rabbit

There’s also a Red Sox movement on their blogs to vote against Giambi.

They have no idea what they’re going to miss out on come the HR Derby.

    Buncha fools!

KEEP ON VOTING, LATE HOUR SURRRRRRGE!

  29. Tiki

Red Sox Nation is behind the big Longoria push, here’s the information:

    http://bostondirtdogs.boston.com/

Since Red Sox Nation Owns the Online Vote,
Let’s Elect Longoria for the Final All-Star Spot,
and Deliver a Little Justice to Jason
Hey Giambi: 2003 Strikes, Yer Out!
Don’t Let the Cheater That Cost the Sox an ‘03 World Series Appearance
    Become an All-Star in 2008

  30. jennifer

See we should have gotten together with another teams fan base. We not only have Boston, but the NY mets fans voting to keep the Big G out. I’ve voted dozens of times, but when you have two huge markets voting against the Big G it is a big hill to climb. :(

Funny how red sux nation turns a blind eye to their own juice users. cough cough fairytek. cough cough big poppy

  31. TurnTwo

“Funny how red sux nation turns a blind eye to their own juice users. cough cough fairytek. cough cough big poppy”

sorry, but i must have missed those failed drug tests, or the public non-apologies.

maybe you can direct me on where to find them?

  32. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008

    David Ortiz
    Curt Schilling

have no doubt in my mind taken steroids.

I dont even care. Im impressed about how we did. We stayed in the race until today when 28 teams were voting a majority of votes on Longoria. It was us against the world, and we stayed in it for a while.

The jealousy of the Mets and Red Sox carries on

  33. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008

maybe you can direct me on where to find them?”

She can probably re direct you to Senator Mitchell

“Interestingly, Mitchell, a Director for the Boston Red Sox, rightly accused more players from the rival New York Yankees of using steroids than from any other team.”

  34. jennifer

Pete let the Big G know we did our best, but the decks were stacked against us.

Gardner 100% right, everyone is out to get the Yankees, cause even though we haven’t won a ws in 7 years, we are still the #` sports team in baseball. :)

  35. 86w183

Bradley is a bit too nuts for the Bronx… a few weeks back he went to the press box in uniform to try and confront a Tv anounced who has “dissed” him. don’t need that kind of volatility.

Nice that Yankees fans vote for their guy or they don’t but do not organize votes against rival players… then again that’s why we’re us and they’re them!

  36. CM

I was only voting for Giambi to see him in the Home Run derby. Longoria clearly deserves to make the team, though. At least 20,000 people got free moustaches out of it.

By the way, I haven’t watched any of the All-Star proceedings the last few years, seeing as how I like well-produced, intelligent television and all. Is there a way to get Berman/Buck/McCarver-less sound for Monday and Tuesday’s festivities? Or should I just invite some friends over, turn on the big screen, and crank up the iTunes?

Or should we just pray for a sweet, merciful god to finally shuffle those 3 unlistenable gasbags off this mortal coil?

  37. Russell NY

“Bradley is a bit too nuts for the Bronx… a few weeks back he went to the press box in uniform to try and confront a Tv anounced who has “dissed” him. don’t need that kind of volatility.”

We should get a guy like that. The 90% racist population at Fenway would harass him and he would kick their a$$e$ 1 by 1.

  38. ANSKY

I think Longoria deserves the spot based on merit. JoeT28in09 makes a good suggestion that Giambi could take Ortiz’ place. It’s being played in NY, Giabni would represent NY, Ortiz has been hurt … it would work in everyone’s favor so hopefully Terry Francona goes for it.

I’ve said it before … Giambi has been warming up and I hope he has a great 2nd half. If he gets so hot at the plate that he bursts into flames, he might be able to begin to approach numbers that would still fall short of the standard he set to get the giant contract he’s got now. O

IN the 4-6 years he played in Oakland leading up to his NY contract, he played 150+ games a year, he looked like he’d REGULARLY hit in the .300-340 range, REGULARLY have an OBP in the .420-450 range and average almost 40HR a year. He’s only been in those ranges a 2 or 3 times in his years here. He’s hardly been close to a long shot MVP candidate for a long time, which is what he was when he signed.

Is he doing better this year? Yep. He’s doing pretty good in fact, even though his average is still floating around .260. He’s not $22M a year good though.

Still, he’s taken the high road in his struggles, he’s worked through it, he’s never whined, he seems to be a very good & likeable teammate … I’d love to see him finish his time in NY in an absolute tear.

Should the team buy out his option and re-sign him for less money? Maybe its a possibility. But I don’t see the team needing a 38+ year old no-glove dead pull hitter when there are other, more dynamic holes to fill in order to make this a great team. I’d rather have Matsui’s all-around offense (and $10M/yr lower salary) at DH, plus he should still be decent enough OF after this knee gets better or repaired.

Matsui’s still got a guaranteed year left on his contract … they can see where he’s at in a year and take it from there. If he’s worth keeping then, then they should keep him. Giambi’s option is this winter and IMO his time is up this winter.

  39. CM

“We should get a guy like that. The 90% racist population at Fenway would harass him and he would kick their a$$e$ 1 by 1.”

I don’t know. Boston might still be racist, but they don’t seem to mind their two dark-skinned Dominican sluggers, their Jewish GM and 1B, or their token-white-guy-Brian-Scalabrine NBA champs, so I don’t see that as a problem.

Besides, the stereotypical Boston Irish sports fan isn’t that much worse than the stereotypical NY/North Jersey Italian sports fan.

Of course, being a Jersey Shore Mick myself, I’m biased toward both.

  40. Chris

I find it interesting that 3 of the 5 AL candidates for the last all star spot have histories with PEDs…

  41. CM

“I find it interesting that 3 of the 5 AL candidates for the last all star spot have histories with PEDs…”

And that 2 of the 3 Yankee All Stars have histories with PDA’s.

  42. TurnTwo

Craig (PA): I know its not a scouting question, but what is wrong with the Dodgers front office? Is it just the GM that is dysfunctional or does it go all the way up to McCourt?

Keith Law: (1:18 PM ET ) I think there’s a schism there between the scouting group that was there pre-Colletti (and largely pre-Depo) and acquired most of the good young players on the Dodgers now, and Colletti, who favors veterans and has no particular attachment to Kemp, Loney, Billingsley, etc.

    *************
if what KLaw is saying is true, the Yankees should knock on Coletti’s door to see what he wants for Loney.

  43. Tiki

The line by Pat Andriola (see below) – Vote for the young third basemen from the Yankees’ least-favorite teams so we can take over The Stadium – just made me really angry. I just wish there was software for an automatic click button to get this done easier.

There was a movement afoot for Wright-Longoria “pacts” among fans around the Internet. The whole concept of “player pacts” has taken shape, on message boards and within social networks. Blocs of fans get together with other blocs of fans to each support their guy.

“A pact that we bloggers over at MetsGeek.com and DRaysBay.com have created is for Mets fans to include Longoria and Rays fans to include Wright,” said Pat Andriola, who e-mailed MLB.com with that pact. “We’re voting all day and trying to spread the Wright-Longoria word as far as possible. Vote for the young third basemen from the Yankees’ least-favorite teams so we can take over The Stadium!”

There is also a Dick Vitale “vote for Longoria” drive.

Ok, I’m not looking at this stuff anymore but I will continue to vote for Jason. I actually voted for David Wright just because I felt he’s become a New Yorker, etc. but now that’s over – I began leaving the NL side blank but now, after reading all the above I think I’ll just have to choose someone else. Why haven’t any of our local blogs done something like hooking up with the Phillies or Brewers?

  44. frank and beans

    giambinooooooooo

  45. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008

Because we didnt realize Met fans were that big of Douches

  46. Tseng

Definitely should have formed an alliance with someone.

  47. b

“The jealousy of the Mets and Red Sox carries on”

Yes, the world is out to get you! Muhahaha!

  48. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008

Yeah but who? EVERY one hates the Yankees except us. It will always be that way

  49. Doreen

This just makes me sad. And I also feel a little naive. It only just dawned on me that there might be people out there who didn’t want Giambi in and wouldn’t vote for him and that’s okay. But to form organized pacts with other teams’ fans to block it is a little scary.

Also, I’m glad we don’t vote fore President of the US over the internet! As imperfect as the voting situation is, just think of how much worse it would be.

    Pete -

Tell Jason we all gave it our all and did not give up.

  50. Ricky Rios

Giambi will likely still make the ASG as Ortiz’s replacement, no?

  51. Chris Berman

Back, Back, Back, gone… Hamilton hit that one all the way to Brooklyn.

Back, Back, Back, gone… Utley just cranked that one to the Triboro Bridge.

Back, Back, Back, gone… Uggla just smashed that one on the Jersey Turnpike.

Tune in Monday night to here these Home Run calls and here what other great calls I have up my sleeve.

  52. kimmiebruce

So, why didn’t they put a limit on the maximum number of votes for this one, as they did for the initial ASG vote?

  53. Old Goat

This was a rigged election designed to get people to vote while they already had their choice lined up to win.

  54. Big Gee

Maybe he woulda got more votes if they handed out fake syringes at the Stadium yesterday.

  55. Non-Yankee Fans Are Idiots

I really hate non-Yankee baseball fans. They whine and moan about the Yankees until they go into their stadium and our fans around the country buy their tickets, thus providing their teams a subsidy they wouldn’t have if Kansas City or Washington are in town. They talk about the Yankees payroll but it’s hard to brag about “homegrown talent” when you’re bragging about Manny and Curt Schilling. I also detest fans who say that Curt Schilling is great because “he speaks his mind.” He’s just another blowhard who likes the sound of his own voice. These fans need to go back to their middle of nowhere towns, shut up, and watch their teams go nowhere under ownership that only wants their $50 bill. The Steinbrenners want our $100 bill but they give it a shot for us every single year.

  56. Non-Yankee Fans Are Idiots

I heard Katherine Harris presided over the All Star Game Vote.
