Mark Newman expects Tabata back this month.

“He’ll be back. Hamstrings, depending on the degree…there’s first, second and third degree. First degree is a couple weeks, between 14 and 21 days, and we think he’s in that category. Having said that, those are only benchmarks. Every guy heals at a different pace, but he’ll be back to play. There’s what, six weeks left in the season? He should be (back).”

Thanks to Mike Ashmore and Melancon might not stay in AA for long, although if you want that info visit Mike Ashmore’s site real good interview between him and Newman.

    3rd time I ask,

If I text for giambi, will they charge me? I have unlimited text messaging. But do they screw you with the extra charges?

  11. Aaron(John Sterling SUCKS!) July 10th, 2008 at 1:18 am

  12. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008 July 10th, 2008 at 1:21 am

Lets put it this way mister ” I hate a Yankee but call myself a Yankee fan” we very well could have 2 less wins, and 2 more losses without Gardner and could be 8.5 back and 6.5 back

But I guess he sucks right?

  13. DFox July 10th, 2008 at 1:22 am

    “3rd time I ask,

If I text for giambi, will they charge me? I have unlimited text messaging. But do they screw you with the extra charges?”

No, MLB doesn’t charge you. Only normal texting fees from your wireless provider apply.

  36. Aaron(John Sterling SUCKS!) July 10th, 2008 at 1:56 am

  37. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008 July 10th, 2008 at 1:59 am

Very racist comment aside, This is the NY Yankees, if you want Spanish people having more fun than actually playing ball, cheer for that team in Queens who could be 3 games over .500 and still in 1st place by the end of the week.

Oh and its Nazi not Natzi. Ask your “girl” she would know

Good job hiding yourself Aaron. And how could someone with 2 winning RBIs against the Red Sox in his first week in the majors be overrated hmm? Oh and I found a pic of your girl online. Eeesh.

Your on the right, and she is on the left. Correct?

When fans of teams liked all of the players on their favorite teams…

    Ahh those were the days..

Now we have Yankee fans saying Yankee players are overrated when they helped the Yankees win 2 games in his first weekend as a professional and already has half the steals as his favorite player in 80 less games.

  44. zach July 10th, 2008 at 2:38 am

  48. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008 July 10th, 2008 at 3:21 am

    Cant stay away can you?

Show me where I overrated Gardner EVER. I havent compared him to anyone better than Ellsbury.

  49. mel July 10th, 2008 at 3:27 am

    Aaron,

LOL. You may have changed your handle, but you’re still obsessed with Gardner.

You’ve just about beat this horse to death. Yes, Gardner was overhyped and hasn’t overwhelmed. But he’s doing okay as the 4th outfielder by contributing in other ways until he figures out the hitting. If he can’t do that, he’ll get sent back.

The joke’s not funny anymore after you tell it a hundred times. Everyone else has moved on from this topic.

  50. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008 July 10th, 2008 at 3:28 am

Yeah, you notice its not talked about anymore until Aaron comes in and brings it up.

  51. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008 July 10th, 2008 at 3:29 am

So what, he was overhyped. So what? Has a player never been overhyped before? People like speed, and this kid has a ton of it. And his new teamates love the element he brings to the team.

  52. Jake July 10th, 2008 at 3:35 am

Hahah I like how Aaron keeps saying goodbye, then comes back for more comments at 3 in the morning.

People have girlfriends, but people don’t stay up and look at random comments on a Yankees page with her. They sleep, party, watch a movie, or talk together. They don’t surf random comments on the internet this late at night.

    Just imagine that convo:

“Hey girl, whatchu doin? Nothin? Come over to mah place, and we can grab a bite of chef boyardee and party it up with comments on Lohud”

Really Aaron, buddy, leave the personal stuff out. The notion that you may or may not have a girlfriend doesn’t matter here. It may matter with friends. But I’m not your friend, he’s not your friend, and other than the second account, no one’s your friend here. And its true for pretty much all of you. We don’t care about your personal life, we care about what you say about baseball, the Yankees, or whats relevant to a logical conversation that goes on here.

…..But since you wanted to give some personal info, I just had to take a shot at how fatuous it sounded.

On topic: Gardner is doing decent for a rookie. If I’m not mistaken Cano started of his career with something like 2-22 and everyone wanted the kid gone. But Torre stuck with him, and look where he is now.

People take time to adjust, its a different lifestyle, different pitchers, and a whole new experience. Have patience. He’s not the second coming of Ken Griffey Jr. He’s a slap hitter, that will steal bases and play good defense.

And speed is something this team lacks, especially game changing speed.

  55. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008 July 10th, 2008 at 4:04 am

Oh and here are Melkys first 19 at bats in the majors in 2005

    Cleveland (4 games) he went 3/13 0 RBI 0 SB 0 R

    Boston (2 games) he went 1/6 0 RBI 0 SB 0 R

    0 game winning runs/rbi

    Gardners first 7 games

    Texas (3 games) 1/10 1 RBI 2 SB 2 R

    Boston (3 games) 2/11 2 RBI 1 SB 2 R

    Tampa (2 games) 1/7 0 RBI 1 SB

    2 game winning RBIs/Hits

Though Gardners hits are less, his hits were bigger, and has more RBI and Runs and SBs, Melky actually had all 0s in those catagories in his first ML stint

  56. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008 July 10th, 2008 at 4:05 am

    8 games not 7

  57. DFox July 10th, 2008 at 4:13 am

Dude, with all due respect, give it up. Posting “game winning hit” stats for first 7 games or whatever is plain silly. If you’re going to do that, then post how many game winning hit/rbi opportunities Melky had in his first 7 games. Who knows if he had any? Melky has had his fair share of game winning hits/walkoff hits/game winning RBI’s in his career so far.

  58. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008 July 10th, 2008 at 4:16 am

Melky didnt have any game winning hits in his first 7 games. He didnt even have an RBI or run in those games.

Im not negating the fact that Melky has done his share for this team, but this guy says Brett Gardner is overrated after 20 something at bats?

  59. DFox July 10th, 2008 at 4:25 am

“Melky didnt have any game winning hits in his first 7 games. He didnt even have an RBI or run in those games. ”

If we’re going to refer to stats, let’s be accurate. Melky had an RBI and a run on 6 hits in his first 7 games, I’m not sure where you’re getting your stats from.

If you’re talking about Gardner not being overrated, then OK, but going to the stat on “how many game winning hits Melky had in his first 7 games” is pretty desperate.

  60. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008 July 10th, 2008 at 4:26 am

  62. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008 July 10th, 2008 at 4:28 am

Considering Abreu has been on the team 2 years, and Damon in his 3rd season and they both just got their first game winning hits this season on the Yankees, I would say a game winning hit in his first week is pretty impressive

    Another site proving it

  64. DFox July 10th, 2008 at 4:35 am

Once again, if you’re going to use stats in arguments, learn how to read them. He played his first 6 games in ’05. http://www.baseball-reference......;year=2005

Then 1 game in ’06 to reach 7: http://www.baseball-reference......;year=2006 In career game #7: 2 hits, RBI

And still, I’m not sure what Melky has to do with the Gardner conversation. Whether Melky had a game winning hit or not in his first 7 games, Gardner has to start hitting or he isn’t going to make it as far as Melky has in his ML career. I want Gardner to succeed as much as the next guy, but so far he’s looked a little over matched in some plate appearances.

  65. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008 July 10th, 2008 at 4:38 am

The funny thing is, I’ll mention how Gardners minors numbers are better than Melkys, and people say, well thats minor league pitching..

Well last time I checked, every player has played at least 1 game in the minors

    Joba Chamberlain?
    Josh Beckett?
    Johan Santana?
    CC Sabathia?

All came from the minors right?

  66. DFox July 10th, 2008 at 4:41 am

Then 1 game in ‘06 to reach 7: http://www.baseball-reference......;year=2006 In career game #7: 2 hits, RBI (it says career game #7 right in the left column)

And still, I’m not sure what Melky has to do with the Gardner conversation. Whether Melky had a game winning hit or not in his first 7 games, Gardner has to start hitting or he isn’t going to make it as far as Melky has in his ML career. And if you would read, you would see that I had his first 6 games, not 7 because he went back down to the minors after the 6th game.

And why does Gardner have to start hitting now? He is in his 2nd week of games. As Jake said, Cano started off this slow and people called for his head, look at him now.

And he has looked over matched because he hasnt gotten used to the major league pitching yet. If he is batting less than .200 by the end of July then fine, bash him all you want, but that isnt going to happen.

  68. Gardner Running For Melkys Spot--Brett Gardner > Jon Papelbon--MO for CY Young 2008 July 10th, 2008 at 4:49 am

Its really kind of pathetic that some people call themselves fans, yet bash their unexperienced youngsters. Fine you like Melky but you dont bash Gardner after a week just because you dont want Melky to lose his job (which he will in a few years anyway with Jackson, Almonte, and Tabata along with any FA that is signed.) an everyday CF for the Yankee isnt going to bat .240 and stay very long

  69. DFox July 10th, 2008 at 4:51 am

“Melky didnt have any game winning hits in his first 7 games. He didnt even have an RBI or run in those games.”

That’s what you said before. Stop pretending that was correct. It was incorrect information. You said FIRST 7 GAMES. In his FIRST 7 GAMES in the MAJOR LEAGUES he had a run and an RBI.

Anyway, about Gardner, that’s what I said, soon. The end of July is considered soon, maybe even too soon. I’d love to see him start hitting, but you haven’t really seen much evidence so far that he will. But yeah, you’re right, I don’t think many people believed Cano would hit either when he first came up.

Spending this much time arguing Melky vs. Gardner is like spending hours figuring out what air freshener to put in your new BMW. It ain’t worth it. Besides, for the moment, we need ‘em both anyway. Seriously, people, take a Xanax or something.

Wonder if Yanks are gonna try and resign Abreu after this season.

  76. eric in australia July 10th, 2008 at 10:28 am

Abreu is no longer the .400 OBP guy with speed and power. He rarely takes his walks, his speed has decline and his power is average. Their really is no reason to resign Abreu and if Cash does so he is a fool. With all the arms down on the farm, Cash will really be hunting a young righty OF bat, like a Carlos Quentin-type. maybe Corey Hart?
    Time to earn it brian.

Abreu is no longer the .400 OBP guy with speed and power. He rarely takes his walks, his speed has decline and his power is average. Their really is no reason to resign Abreu and if Cash does so he is a fool.

Not a fan of resigning him but you Bobby is durable, a prototypical 1 or 3 hitter. If it doesn’t cost much signing Abreu for a cheap deal would be better than anything in FA this year.

Why would Milwaukee deal a cheap bat, and why would Chicago deal an MVP type player that is cost efficient for them ?

    Time to earn it brian.

Oh brother here we go again.

Just using the Quentin deal as an example.
With all the bats in the Brewers system, and with the likelihood that theyll lose CC, im sure theyd be interested in acquiring some arms.
    Doesnt sound stupid to me
