It’s a family affair for Girardi
As one of the coaches for the AL team, Joe Girardi was at the press conference at the Grand Hyatt today. He had two of his children with him, 8-year-old Serena and 6-year-old Dante.
They held tape recorders and microphones for reporters as their dad answered questions and really enjoyed themselves. Dante – who will play in the majors some day, bank on it – told me that he thought Dan Uggla would win the Home Run Derby.
The MVP? “A-Rod or Hanley (Ramirez),” he said.
At the moment, Dante is in full uniform shagging flies during batting practice. He changes sides of the field depending whether a righty or lefty is up. His dad is running with him.

Oh man, those kids seem like they’re adorable!
At least he’s loyal to teams his Dad worked for with his picks.
i love Joe Girardi.
This is actually Seerena’s second all star gme Girardi told the story on YES and they showed video that when he went as a player he actually carried her out on the field during introductions she was only a few months old. This was actually back in the day when they allowed kids to come out remember when Jorge brought his son??
What a puny little runt Pedroia is next to Jeter
As for the kids of the players, there is nothing I enjoy more during the HR derby than seeing the players’ families
Gayle – I remember Posada with his son. I think now that they bring their families to ride on the parade cars with them tomorrow afternoon.
Aw! So cute!
Unless A-Rod has a huge second half, I don’t think Dante is going to be right with his MVP pick of A-Rod.
Dis, I think he might have meant AS game MVP
Wasn’t it nice to see the Aaron Boone highlight closing out the leadins to the Derby.
“And the Yankees are going to the world series!”
I REALLY want to hear that again this year.
Long ago, in another life, I was a Mets fan and every year they would have family day and the players’ kids and wives would be at the ballpark and they’d have a little game before the game. It was really adorable.
Did the Yankees ever have something like that?
And why don’t they do it anymore?
Girardi’s little boy sounds precious. And smart. And I believe Pete 100% when he says Dante will play in the major leagues one day. The boy is focused at 6 years old. Plus, he’s surrounded by it all and he seems to like it.
Doreen, I left you a little bit of trivia about Paul Winchell in the other thread that you might enjoy,
I’m eating dinner, and the TV is on. And I’m watching ESPN, and they’re talking about Milton Bradley. And Peter Gammons comes on, and he goes to say that when he (Gammons) was ill (with his stroke), the one guy who kept writing to him was Bradley. Gammons was clearly grateful. And I think it makes a point that Bradley isn’t as bad as his reputation.
I’ve thought for a while that the Yanks should consider Bradley, either via trade or FA, for one of their OF spots while waiting for AJax, or Tabata, or whomever. Yeah, you can argue that his numbers are just because he’s in his walk year, but so is Bobby Abreu. And no one can argue that Bradley’s not a good ballplayer, his knock has always been his temper.
If Josh Hamilton can come back from drug addiction, then we should not automatically rule out Milton Bradley.
watching bernie in this home run clip is making me wanna cry. haha. i think bernie realy gets overlooked. its ashame he has not been back to the stadium. he needs to come home.
wow those homeruns brought back so many wonderful memories. i cant wait till were back on top. remember every yr when you just knew the yanks would prevail. makes it tough to watch this years team.
BTW, anyone who says ESPN has nothing but Yankee-haters on that network should take a look at Tim Kurkjian on the pre-Derby show.
It was pretty funny because his words resonated like a 12 year old kid going to Yankee Stadium for the very first time.
You know, for a network that’s supposed to hate the Yankees, that segment on Yankee Stadium home runs was incredibly moving.
Those flashbacks of homers at the Stadium really choked me up. I remember a lot of them.
God I long for those days again when the Yankees seemed full of energy and enthusiasm.
I want to see one of those meaningful homeruns fly out of there this season. I really want to hear “and trhe Yankees are going to the world series in 2008!”
Please Yankees. Come back.
The ESPN montauge of great HR at the stadium as terrific!!!
There is two cute pics of Joe with his son on yahoo.
Mo with his mini-Mo’s

That BSPN montage did give me chils and brought a smile to my face.
As far as my baseball fandom goes–44 years young!–being there tomorrow at the ASG is going to rank up there in my top 3 Yankee Stadium moments. I don’t really care much for the Derby, but watching the coverage sure is making my pulse race for tomorrow.
And the afternoon parade goes right past my building — my window faces 6th Ave! I can’t see getting a lick of work done tomorrow….
Jennifer how about a link.
would love to know which NYC beat writer lost the $20
In fact, $20 changed hands in the Grand Hyatt lobby just after noon, one local baseball writer having bet another that A-Rod would no-show.
sorry..

Just placed a $ 100.00 to win 175.00 on Josh Hamilton

#34 and 35.
Yeah, Rebecca, but, what else would they fill the air time with? When you think of home runs, you think Yankees. It also kills most Boston and Cub fans that NY Stadium is considered the “Crown Jewel of Ballparks” and “The Cathedral”, since the first version isn’t as old as those two.
If you ask Cubs fans, 99% have no idea that wrigley Field wasn’t even built for the Cubs. It was built for the Chicago Whales of the 3rd Major League (Federal League) and was called Weeghman Park, and most Boston fans don’t realize that the Yankees held the mortgage to Fenway Park for 3 years.
My post with the links is awaiting moderation. Go to yahoo.com than mlb, and click on the pictures down below.
gayle
Betting Manny would be a no show was the smart money bet.
gayle,
Looks like he handled it well, much to the chagrin of the media.

jennifer
I linked pic of Mo and his kids from Yahoo and they are still moderating too.
I can sit here and write about Yankee Stadium all I want…
…And I will never do it justice.
Thanks Jennifer.
Grady Sizemore is a cute…as is Chase Utley…
Big mistake in using a male voice over on that clip on the Stadium. The Grand Old Lady deserved better than that.
Argh..lol
is a cute=is cute
Thanks to Pete for putting the picture up. It’s the one I was going to link to.
Tell me Dante doesn’t already get it. Pete’s right. This kid is a player in waiting. No doubt.
ooooo
someone should tell Utley the mics are on
Did anybody else here Chase Utleys F-Bomb? And I quote in response to the booing as he made his way to the third base line “Boo…F-u” I had to tivo it back to confirm it. Oh yeah!! What a loser..
LOL @ Utley..be careful with what you say dude. Mics are around..
jennifer,
Thanks for the link. It’s good to see that the players don’t harbor ill feelings (like the fans!).
Gotta say, those unis are pretty nice.
yes utley said fu to the fans,i lost respect for him.
Oops Chase.
girardi is in better shape than a lot of the players
And all the players there are barfing hearing the fan call for the most overrated player in the game!
Ha ha!
that has to be the luckiest little boy in the world
The kid with the TB helmet on did not look too confident.
Dante rocking the stirrups.
Great night for the game of baseball. Hamilton hit rockets.
Girardi’s son is saying that because his dad used to manage the Marlins and he probably knew Uggla and Hanley personally.
