Setback for Damon in Florida

July
14

Johnny Damon was supposed to hit off a tee today in Tampa. But according to the Associated Press, his sprained shoulder was too sore. His workout will be pushed back a few days.

“Had a little tough time sleeping last night,” Damon said after undergoing treatment. “Today it felt a little sore. We’re just going to hold back the swinging at least two more days. Hopefully it won’t be too long of a time.”

In other rehab news:

  • Hideki Matsui took some swings inside and got treatment on his knee. “I think everything is progressing as planned,” Matsui said through a translator. “Today I kept the workout and everything light. So far, everything is progressing.”

There is no date yet for when Matsui will start a running program, a key step before he can play in minor league rehab games. “Running, we don’t know right now,” Matsui said.

  • Phil Hughes threw 25 fastballs during his second bullpen session. He also threw 10 curveballs from halfway up the mound.
  • Eric Milton threw another bullpen.

    Eric Milton…

    ...There’s a name I haven’t heard in ages.

  3. mel

    Pete,

    Thanks for the updates.

It sounds good for Matsui, but I don’t think he’s going to play much if at all.

re: Papelbon. Either he’s an ass, an idiot, or an attention monger. Or all of the above.

You’ve never heard one person disrepect Mariano. And this punk continues to do it.

I think he has some kind of personality disorder. Megalomania or something.

mel: I can’t remember anyone every disrespecting Mo.

  6. TurnTwo

hmm, its starting to sound like the production we get from our LFs might be in question the rest of the season.

Disable the sound on your PC/laptop.
    That is what I do.

i’m just wondering how a barber shop has their own website and the $$ to sponser an ad on the lohud yanks blog. i’m sure they’re regular $10 – $15 cuts, right?

“The Boston Globe confirms ESPN’s Peter Gammons’ report that the Braves have had talks with the Red Sox regarding Mark Teixeira.

Gammons reported that the Braves had offered Teixeira for Kevin Youkilis and Craig Hansen. The Globe reports that the team wouldn’t make the deal at this time, but told the Braves to “keep us in mind.” ”

not sure if this was already posted

  12. mel

    Brandon,

She used to have her own blog. On the issue that she was a baseball groupie she said something like, “It’s a coincidence my boyfriends have been baseball players. And pitchers.” I think she said it with a straight face!

Anyways, she’s a Dodgers fan now.

I think Damon is going to be out until August. His type of injury to his throwing shoulder will take some time to heal.

  17. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

Charmed was the show Alyssa Milano was on…about witches in san francisco.

    Hey guys,
If you want to compete for a free 1977 WS DVD (complete with game 7 of the ALCS) feel free to participate in my game on soxandpinstripes.

    http://www.soxandpinstripes.com/sox_and_pinstripes/2008/07/make-your-derby.html

There’s the link, just fill it out accordingly and if you get the most points you win. I figure this is a small way of making a meaningless competition more fun.

If you have Firefox you can adblock those ads. I believe its a plugin for Firefox, install the plugin then just right click the ad and select adblock.

  20. GreenBeret7

Rebecca, your younger days were last year.

In Livan Hernandez’s younger years, he used to the Spanish Armada sail around Cuba.

Meh, the Twins are going to retire Livian’s number and keep it at the Science Museum’s dinosaur exhibit.

In her younger years, Madonna dated men her own age.

In Julio Franco’s younger years, he…

    (too easy, I know)

  29. GreenBeret7

Rebecca, “younger days” is “Captain Kangaroo, Howdee Doodee, Roy, Gene and the Lone Ranger on Saturday mornings, followed by Ol’ Diz and PeeWee hawking Faustaff Beer in between pitches to Mick and Roger on Saturday afternoons, running home to see if Annette’s skirt flies up on The Mickey Mouse Club.

You’re not yet old enough to have more than a couple of yesterdays. You’re a board cutie with a sense of humor, a good writer, and smart as Hell. I’d love to have your tomorrows.

In her younger years, Madonna may have been worth the excitement. Now she’s just a thinner, wealthier version of the proverbial moped.

Saying that just from an aesthetic point of view of course. I never met the gal. And who knows … she could still have ‘other’ talents beyond just singing & dancing too. ;)

OK, so maybe A-Rod turns the light off.

  32. ANSKY

From ESPN: “Agent Jeff Borris said he recently offered Bonds’ services to “numerous” clubs for the major league minimum salary of $390,000. When Borris couldn’t find a taker, he concluded that Bonds will not be playing in the big leagues this season.”

Hmmm … now I wonder if Borris & Bonds might finally be getting the hint …

  33. ANSKY

Has he tried contacting McDonald’s yet? Their minimum is much more affordable.

Of course not … if he worked at “Burger King” he could wear one of those cardboard crown thingies like the home run king that he is.

Wait a minute, maybe not … do they test for PEDs at BK yet?

  34. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08

GB: :-[ Aww, quit making me blush!

Anyway, I’m not half as smart as most people here.

  35. Joe

What happened did his chicken throwing arm fall off? LOL

  36. ANSKY

    Joe

He’d be better off if it did. I like Damon but I can’t believe that thing he calls an arm actually went from useless to worse.

  37. GreenBeret7

I’ve seen, met and known smart people over 59 years, Rebecca.  You more than hold your own. Using this board to determine intelligence isn’t wise. Most of the “smart ones” prove it by twisting numbers and facts. I’ve read your blog, and, it’s impressive. You do well, there.

In your first book, make sure you have something about GreenKnight7. That will show real intelligence.

  38. S.A.- I believe in this team but can the offense stop being so offensive?

Keeping my fingers crossed for Matsui and Damon…that they get better and we see them soon!

  39. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have.

S.A. Matsui and Damon are two of the hardest working most dedicated players on the team. Figures they’d be the ones hurt!

Damon to me is the captain of the Yankees even though someone else wears the C.

  40. Doreen

    GreenBeret7 –
What about Romper Room and Wonderama (Sandy Fox and Bob McAllister)? And Winchell Mahoney Time? Not to mention Soupy Sales pre-ban-for-life-from-tv.

I just got off the phone with my mom and was having “flashback” time, reminiscing, because I had to drive to Bayshore, LI today to pick up my daughter, and I used to have family that lived out there, in the 60s and 70s. Then they all moved to Florida. But I guess between that conversation with my mom and your post, I was able to remember—Winchell Mahoney Time! hooh.

Back to topic, though, it’s too bad about Damon, but I’m not surprised. No one’s a spring chicken anymore, and you just don’t heal as quickly in your 30s as you do in your 20s. And that was one heck of a bang into the wall. I’m also worried about Matsui. I think as long as he can DH he’ll be okay, but he won’t be playing the field; and you still have to be concerned with running. He hasn’t run yet. What does that tell you? Not much, I guess.

I have more hope for Phil Hughes, because he has the one thing the other two don’t—youth.

  41. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have.

Wasn’t it nice to see the Aaron Boone highlight closing out the leadins to the Derby.

“And the Yankees are going to the world series!”

I REALLY want to hear that again this year.

  42. GreenBeret7

Doreen, was never much on Romper Room. If I ever hear another thing about Mr. Do-Bee and Mr. Don’t=Bee or another “Romper, stomper, bomper boo..” with that stupid Magic Mirror….that floozie never did see me through that thing. Didn’t care for Miss Francis and Ding Dong School, either. I grew up in Michigan, but, we got WGN on the antenna, so, I did watch Garfield Goose and Andy Clyde. Enjoyed Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney. Did you know that Paul Winchell invented the first artificial heart and disposable razors amoung 30+ other patents?

  43. Sudakis

Yankees will be in the playoffs regardless of what Damon and Matsui do. Evan Roberts on the FAN made a great point today. Yeah, the Yankees have problems but how impressed are you with the other WC contenders? Oakland has given up by trading their best pitcher, Tampa Bay is coming back to earth and the Twins just aren’t that good.

By the way, Matsui has gotten a slide for his playoff performance. Starting with Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS, he has a grand total of 2 RBIs.

  44. RustyJohn

Is it even money that Milton will start a game before Hughes does?

Joba needs to stay away from Alyssa. There must be some fad going on in the club house- the “date a chick who is 16 years older than you” fad. Watch for Mussina to start going out with Rue McClanahan.

  45. yanksince57-is this 1959 or is it 1965?

my favorite moments in childhood tv viewing was hearing the call of “pluck your magic twanger froggie!” what show (old) boys and girls?

  46. stu

Maybe so, but they need to start playing with more consistency beginning after the AS Break. Otherwise, it doesnt matter who they are competing against. I still feel like this is one of those “Murphey’s Law” seasons for the Yanks … whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. Injuries have completely short-circuited their ability to go on a tear … I dont see them playing unconscious until they are more healthy and it seems like someone is always going on the DL … but who knows, maybe once Damon and Matsui are back, they will stay healthy … we can only hope.

Anyone remember “Birthday House” with Paul Tripp? “Hi Mike, Hi Mike! I like to say… HI Mike!”
