Waiting to see some stars

Here we are at the Grand Hyatt waiting for the big All-Star Game press conference. It’s expected that Cliff Lee and Ben Sheets will be named the starters. At least that is what I heard is being reported.

071408_10231.jpgThis is a media circus. Every baseball reporter of note is in New York. They make the managers, players and coaches available at the hotel today. Then we’ll all troop up to the Stadium for batting practice and the Home Run Derby.

The flight from Toronto landed at about midnight at Newark last night. Got home around 1:30 a.m. Nothing a can (or two) of Red Bull can’t cure.

Keep checking back. We’re going to hammer the blog for two days.

Do the All-Star game pre-game ceremonies begin at 8:00 on Tuesday or earlier?

  2. Brent (Yankees Need a Pick-Me-Up)

How much for one of those nifty media badges? I’ll give $3.50 for yours.

  3. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 14) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

    Cliff Lee over Holladay interesting…

    good call brandon,

roy halladay has been pitching lights out for years, and this “johnny-come-lately” is getting the start? cliff lee should be thanking the good lord for making him a lefty.

    my two cents.

  5. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 14) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Just in CGs alone Halladay should be starting, he’s the best SP in the league no one gives enough credit to.

Well, according to Craigslist, HR Derby tickets are being sold right now for less than face value…hope the same thing happens tomorrow with ASG tickets!

(I know it’s a way long shot, kind of like the chances that Rasner will throw a no hitter…but still…I can hope, right?)

  7. Zach in Port Jeff

i’m too lazy to look up the weather for the next two nights…

    stay away rain.

  8. Buddy Biancalana

Cliff Lee has been a stud this year, the honor is well earned.

  9. Zach in Port Jeff

for anyone thats interested…i’m having a wiffle ball home run derby in the back yard today. maybe i’ll post the youtube link tomorrow after i win!

    Rebecca-

Last year in SF , ASG tix went down dramatically the day before. Batting practice is awesome for the ASG.

Good Luck on getting tix Rebecca!

Agree with Buddy B. We’re talking about the 2008 ASG. Not the “forever” ASG. Cliff Lee is 12-2, 2.31. Halladay is 11-6, 2.71. So, THIS year Lee deserves to be the starter.

halladay has 7 complete games. he is a savior. Guy is a stud

  13. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 14) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

    Not over Roy Halladay

    Cliff Lee
    2.31 ERA, 12-2, 1.03 WHIP, 1 CG

    Roy Halladay
2.71 ERA, 11-6, 1.01 WHIP, he also has 7 CG

    “Cliff Lee
    2.31 ERA, 12-2, 1.03 WHIP, 1 CG

    Roy Halladay
2.71 ERA, 11-6, 1.01 WHIP, he also has 7 CG”

Halladay’s innings per start are at 7.5, which is remarkable by today’s standards. Still, Lee is the league leader in ERA and wins and is in the top 5 or 6 in K’s. As far as innings per start, he is at 6.95, which is second only to Halladay.

Hallday’s the league’s best pitcher, but Lee isn’t a bad call.

Not that I agree, but ERA and wins always win out in these type of decisions/arguements. Same goes for Cy Young voting at the end of the year. CG, not so much. Lee also gets bonus points for the “pleasant surprise” factor…

Ask anyone who knows what they’re talking about who’d they rather have on their team this year, money aside, and I would guess most would say Haliday, by a lot.
