Goose Gossage rips Papelbon

We know certain things are inevitable. Death, taxes, A-Rod seeking the spotlight and Goose Gossage ripping young players.

Brian Heyman covered the Hall of Famers press conference today and files this report:

Former Yankees closer Goose Gossage took a shot at Boston’s Jonathan Papelbon for wanting to close last night’s game at Mariano Rivera’s place of business, which is going out of business at the end of the season.

“I don’t know how he gets off where he should close,” said Gossage, who will inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 27. “I’m sure … if the shoe was on the other foot where they were in Fenway and it would be the farewell to Fenway, Mariano wouldn’t be saying, “I should be closing out there.’ ”

————

Apparently after realizing how dopey he looked yesterday, Papelbon told the Boston media he really did want River to close. Too little, too late.

Wow both Pete and Gossage come off looking like giant pussies here.

    Too little too late?

Holy god Pete that makes you sound like a jilted woman.

  4. Johnny Damon's beard

My favorite Goose Gossage line comes from his tenure with the Padres, when owner Joan Kroc banned beer in the clubhouse. “How can she do that?” Gossage ranted, “when she’s poisoning the world with her cheeseburgers?”

  5. retire #51 (and let him throw out the first pitch)

can you watch all of this live right now? is it espn news YES, or what

  6. aaron

Yankee are hosting the all star game and the fans are spending all of their time complaining about Papelbon and the Red Sox.

What a sad state of affairs in NY these days.

  7. Mo Fan

Mo is by far my favorite player, but I think everyone misunderstood Papelbon. You can’t compare the guy to Mo. End of story. But he said that he WANTS to close the game. I don’t think he meant that he SHOULD close it. I also think he was trying to respect his manager by not giving away who was definitely closing since Tito was witholding the info.

  8. bluyt

Willie Randolph will be at the All-Star Game after all

    That’s a fantastic line!

  10. CUYanks

So George will be there… it’s not impossible that he throws out the first pitch…

  11. pat m in ct

Didn’t Goose make some comments last season about hating the Red Sox when he was a Yankee and not being able to understand the civil interaction between today’s Yanks and Sox?

  12. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: 14) (Johan Santana HR count: 13 and a SP)

Mets fans will find that interesting so Willie will be there after al… Classy move by the Yankees.

  13. Other Pete

Eh, you give Papelbon too much credit by getting upset over this. He’s young, arrogant, and certainly not smart enough to have the kind of big-picture outlook that’s being expected here. I understand the objection, but expecting a statesmanly attitude from this kid is just as dopey as Papelbon is being made out to be.

Some things, in other words, don’t deserve the reaction. This is one of them. Nobody other than Papelbon thought for a second that Papelbon deserved the role, and Papelbon only said in essence that he’d want it because anybody would.

Laugh at Papelbon for his cluelessness, but please, don’t go dignifying his remark by getting bent out of shape about it.

  14. al arodien

does anybody agree Justin Morneau looks very similer to actor matt damon!

  15. aaron

What’s funny is that Papelbon made the statements about wanting Mo to close YESTERDAY. But our favorite blogger here decided to deliberately mislead people to serve his own story.

A very low point for Pete today.

  16. Russell W

Papelbon is a flip flopper. I guess we can say Jonathan Papelbon = George W. Bush League.

  17. Joe D

    Gimme an “I” Gimme a “d” Gimme an “i” Gimme an “o” Gimme a “t.” What’s that spell? Papel-sphincter mouth!

  18. abcd

from all the hush hush about the first pitch, i’m guessing it will be thrown out by yankee legend carl pavano…

  19. mel

aaron, go read your boston globe or whichever paper Gordon Eddes works for.

He tried to make like Papelbon was just trying to get a rise out of everyone.

Then Paps pulled someone on the side afterwards and did his best Michael Jackson impersonation by backpedaling and saying that that he, Jonathon Papelbon, wanted Mariano to be the closer. As if he has any say!

  20. Nick in SF

Question from the Damon/Matsui/No Bonds thread: who are all these surplus DH types that Pete refers to? Damon and Matsui don’t count, duh. Posada, yes, and he’s not exactly tearing it up right now. Giambi? Yes, but the team, sadly, is stronger with him in the field than with him DHing.

While I’m not exactly a Bonds advocate, it’s not nearly as clear cut as some are making it out to be.

  21. Don Capone

Papelbon’s an idiot, but I think the whole thing has been blown out of proportion. What is he supposed to say, they he doesn’t want to close the game? Hell, I want to close the game.

  22. aaron

Anything for Yankee fans to complain about instead of enjoying this historic all star game.

  23. Nick in SF

Also, anyone here anything about Tim Lincecum being taken from his hotel on a stretcher?

  24. Rob Thompson

I can’t begin to convey the level of hate this building in my heart for this man. Justice is funny. It would not surprise me if he injured his shoulder or got cancer like Lester or something of the kind.

Mo is the greatest closer of all time. Classy and a true gentleman as well.

What’s very disappointing to me is that there are so many positive stories that are out there in baseball right now and this joker has hijacked the newspapers with his classless drivel.

Justice will prevail in the end, my dimwitted little southern boy – beware of rapidly aproaching batteries.

  25. mel

    Don Capone,

He should have deferred to Francona, or said that he wanted to Mariano to do it in the first place. But he didn’t, so his BS talk about wanting Mo to do it is just damage control.

He should have had an answer prepared. Everyone knows it was going to be asked.

    There’s honest and there’s diplomatic.

We don’t need to hear what Jonathon Papelbon thinks about Jonathon Papelbon again. We already heard about it during his contract “negotiation”.

  26. retire #51 (and let him throw out the first pitch)

i think they will give george a moment, but i hope he doesnt throw the first pitch, he should be in his box waving as always

  27. Don Capone

    mel,

You’re right, he should have deferred to his manager. But he’s young and immature. Maybe since the whole baseball world came down on what he said he’ll actually mature a little from this experience. Young players don’t always know how to talk to the media, and that’s where the older guys have to show them the ropes. He could have said “I’d love to close out the All-Star game in Yankee Stadium, but Mariano Riveria is the man, and it’s his house.” No one would have had a problem with that.

  28. Dave

Obviously, this historic all star game is in Yankee stadium. I don’t understand why any yankee’s fan can’t complain about Papelbon WANT to close the game.

  29. rb15

who cares what papelbon thinks? i have the sneaking suspicion that this is his attempt to make himself relevant for a night when it’s just not really so much about him. just like a troll, ignore him and he will eventually go away.

  30. aaron

Ha so now people are threatening Papelbon with violence.

Trash fans from a trash city

    Stay classy NY!

  31. Buddy Biancalana

Interesting that my comment along with ray the sox fan were deleted in response to Rob Thompson comment about cancer.

  32. Johnny Damon's beard

Dennis Eckersley is the greatest closer of all time.

  33. Lenny

Francona being the soft touch that he is would never say a thing to Papsmear.
I’m convinced that he’s a 27 year old attention craver.
