who cares what papelbon thinks? i have the sneaking suspicion that this is his attempt to make himself relevant for a night when it’s just not really so much about him. just like a troll, ignore him and he will eventually go away.

You’re right, he should have deferred to his manager. But he’s young and immature. Maybe since the whole baseball world came down on what he said he’ll actually mature a little from this experience. Young players don’t always know how to talk to the media, and that’s where the older guys have to show them the ropes. He could have said “I’d love to close out the All-Star game in Yankee Stadium, but Mariano Riveria is the man, and it’s his house.” No one would have had a problem with that.
