Here’s George Steinbrenner arriving at the Stadium with the assistance of an employee. MLB plans some sort of recognition for Steinbrenner tonight.

Hal Steinbrenner and Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal are here as well.

    He doesn’t look well :/

  2. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '08, (Santana's not here, he's not coming!!!!) July 15th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

Hopefully everything will run smoothly and the Boss will get a warm welcome tonight. And a note to the employee next to him- wear a hat, please. :)

  3. Rock em Sock em Robots July 15th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

The Boss deserves a moment in the sun for sure. Haha, its kind of silly that he has to wear an admission pass to get into his own stadium though. I’m pretty sure everyone knows who he is.

  4. Kevin July 15th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

No he does not look well, but I am certainly glad he is in attendance as he deserves this tonight with what he has done for the game.

  5. Laura - God Bless the New York Yankees! July 15th, 2008 at 7:34 pm

It’s amazing to see him like that and then remember how he used to be. I’ve always loved George. He always wanted to win and as a fan, that’s what you want for your owner. I wish him nothing but the best!!

  6. gayle July 15th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

I have a feeling that from 8-840 it is going to be a pretty emotional night

  7. stuart July 15th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

the best owner in team sports, by far.. yep he made many personell mistakes but no one used there money more for 1 goal to bring winners to the big apple..

he is old now so have some sympathy for him.. he has many faults but no one takes care of there own better then King George.

George thanks for 40 + years of caring about the team and trying to win at all costs.

    thanks…

  8. jennifer- I got your back Girardi-Moose was robbed July 15th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Okay aren’t the ceremonies supposed to start at 7:45?

  9. Jorge Steinbrenner July 15th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Still the baddest man in the planet. put Dave Winfield in front of him and you’ll see how quickly the Boss wakes up. :)

    Best wishes always to him.

  10. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 15th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

    It’s already emotional.

  11. RalphieD July 15th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

call me crazy but he looks decent to me..i wouldnt look at that picture and say..”Wow george looks terrible”

  12. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 15th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

    Ernie Banks is awesome.

jeannie zelasko might be the death of me

  14. GreenBeret7 July 15th, 2008 at 7:42 pm

It’s about time that people are now talking about what George Steinbrenner has done FOR the game instead of 25 years ago when people complained about what he did TO the game.

  15. Scott July 15th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

    when does game start?

  16. mel July 15th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

    GreenBeret7,

Saw something earlier that the Yankees and MLB want to honor Steinbrenner in a special way because of all that he contributed (cough-$$). Selig had his thumb all in that pie.

  17. DFox July 15th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

“call me crazy but he looks decent to me..i wouldnt look at that picture and say..”Wow george looks terrible””

I agree… People forget that that’s what happens when people get older. They look older. His sickness isn’t physical if I remember correctly, it’s mental.

  18. Chris Barrows(PinstripedScranton) July 15th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

It’s amazing how much the man has aged. You can dislike big George as much as you want, but he wants to win. He’s always wanted to a win, and as a fan, how can I dislike that attitude?

I hope it’s a nice tribute to him today.

Within that same context, however, I wish they wouldn’t destroy the stadium. Give away the new one, I could careless, I like this one.

    There’s the dreamer in me.

  19. S.A.- I believe in this team but can the offense stop being so offensive? July 15th, 2008 at 7:50 pm

    I’m getting a little teary.. :(

  20. Skippy July 15th, 2008 at 7:50 pm

    Does Hal have a date?

  21. Alan July 15th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

The same thing will be heard from the spineless Commissioner. The game has never been in better shape financially, yada-yada-yada.

  22. ERâ„¢ ( The Last Yankee Fanâ„¢ ) July 15th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

I’m fortunate enough to have a Willie Mays autographed baseball, too.

  23. Chris Barrows(PinstripedScranton) July 15th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

This month is a good month for me. All-Star game in the Bronx, my favorite actor talking about buying milk to get to Yankees games and then being in a movie later this month, can’t get much better.

  24. sunny615 July 15th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

MLBTR: “The Rockies want either Jon Niese from the Mets or Ian Kennedy from the Yankees from Brian Fuentes, but the two New York clubs aren’t having that.”

  25. ramar July 15th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

My dad is 82. He and George look the same. For their age, they look quite good.

  26. mel July 15th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

    And the love affair continues:

Batting practice had just concluded for the American League and Josh Hamilton trotted over to the stands behind home plate. It was there where he patiently autographed baseballs, tickets, hats, gloves and whatever else any fan could find. The interaction between Hamilton and the fans — most of whom were either Yankee or Mets fans — was touching. Numerous fans told Hamilton how appreciative they were of him, and you could see on their faces how much he is a symbol of hope.

“Josh, you’re the man,” one Yankee fan said with a thick New York accent. “Nobody else is [signing autographs]. You’re the man, Josh.”

James Lipton, the host from Inside the Actors Studio, was coincidentally in the middle of this entire scene, looking on. Hamilton told everyone they didn’t have to yell his name; he’d try to get to as many people as he could. He moved up and down the warning track, signing, smiling and conversing with little kids.

“What a good guy,” one Yankee fan said to another. “A-Rod wouldn’t do this.”

  27. randy l July 15th, 2008 at 7:55 pm

    you know what.
    everyone gets old.
george, despite some crazy times, was a really good yankee owner.
there will never be another one like george.
i think he deserves all the respect we can show him.

a long time ago, watching a yankee spring training game with my father in sarasota against the white sox, george was sitting in the stands a few rows in front of us when my father said you should go talk to him. he said it kidding around, but when otto graham, who was sitting with him, got up , i walked down and sat down in otto’s seat and said hi to george.

i told him i had a trade for him. at the time he was feuding with ken griffey sr. over something and reggie was out in california after leaving the yankees. i said he should trade one for the other. his family that was sitting in front burst out laughing and george patted me on the back and said” you’ll be all right” while laughing at my joke. there was no way reggie was coming back. but george was a good sport and chatted for a few minutes and shook my hand as i gave otto back his seat.

even back then george was not the ogre people made him out to be.

Dofx – I agree with you dont think he looks horrible at all. He looks older. Please dont take this the wrong way but Bobby Murcer looked sickly George does not.

  29. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '08, (Santana's not here, he's not coming!!!!) July 15th, 2008 at 7:55 pm

It’s always bugged me to hear people complaining about Steinbrenner and the Yankees “buying” championships. As long as you have the clout, the resources, and the knowhow to put everything together, why worry about the detractors? He’s no angel, but it was foolish to let all of those resources go to waste, just because the Royals, Marlins, and Pirates of the world were poor and disadvantaged.

George did it his way, and that’s what has helped to make this franchise the most prolific in all of sports. I will gladly applaud him for that. Thank you, Mr. Steinbrenner.

  30. pat July 15th, 2008 at 7:55 pm

    Let the fun begin!!!!

  31. Doreen July 15th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

Those Wright Brothers are pretty cute, no?

I’m so glad the weather has cooperated. The City has never looked more beautiful, and I’m sure the stadium is going to look glorious.

Willie Mays looks pretty good, too.

I think the Boss looks okay in that picture up there. Older, and maybe he needs some assistance, but he doesn’t look frail or unhealthy at all. I hope he has a wonderful night.

    Rebecca-

Just got back from a visit to you site. I think I got caught up short today when I read that there are only 32 home games left in the Stadium. Your piece was very moving. Those memories will help to fill the new space, don’t you worry.

  32. Annie Savoy July 15th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

So glad to see my old friend George Steinbrenner here at the Stadium tonight. Hope this night is everything he wants it to be – he’s been a great owner of a great team.
Thanks for everything, George and take care.

  33. Doreen July 15th, 2008 at 7:57 pm

I can’t believe this silly song is making me cry like a baby!

  34. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 15th, 2008 at 7:57 pm

    This is amazing.

  35. Chris Barrows(PinstripedScranton) July 15th, 2008 at 7:58 pm

That was amazing(and unfortunately, past tense, I’d like to see it again, haha).

  36. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 15th, 2008 at 7:58 pm

    Doreen: thank you.

It was really hard to right that, so it means a lot to me.

  37. Doreen July 15th, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Only Strahan and David Wells could actually sing. Pretty funny. So, crying and laughing out loud simultaneously. I must be nuts.

  38. Laura - God Bless the New York Yankees! July 15th, 2008 at 7:59 pm

I’m starting to think that maybe we shouldn’t tear down the stadium. There are just too many memories.

  39. pat July 15th, 2008 at 7:59 pm

That song was good. “I don’t have to sing it do I”

  40. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 15th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

I feel like Rebecca now when she says nothing she says will do justice to the situation.

I have been watching the tape of the parade and listening to all the stars talk about how nobody anywhere does it like New York and how this could only happen in New York. I can’t really get out how I feel to be a Yankee fan. The pomp and the circumstance and the bigness and the history and the class. Right now I’m thinking that no one season can do anything to take anything away from what the New York Yankees represent to not just America but to the world and to the world of sports.

I’m a little mad at myself now for selling my tickets.

I’m actually getting a little emotional myself watching Sinatra’s song and the people singing about our City.

I love you New York. I love you New York Yankees. I love you mom and dad for making me what I am today. A fan of the greatest team in baseball.

Except for an isolated few nobody will ever tell me that just about every player wouldn’t want to play for the Yankees.

In case you end up reading my posts, yeah Lisa, I love you too. Ha ha!

  41. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 15th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

Oh yeah. George Steinbrenner you are my hero. Don’t ever forget it.

  42. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 15th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

Wow, that was really nice to applaud Sheppard.

  43. Laura - God Bless the New York Yankees! July 15th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

Nice of them to remember Bob.

  44. Chris Barrows(PinstripedScranton) July 15th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

    We’re missing two Bob’s tonight. I wish I couldn’t say that.

  45. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '08, (Santana's not here, he's not coming!!!!) July 15th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

The recognition of Sheppard was a neat touch and nice applause for Soriano.

  46. pat July 15th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

The fans need to cheer loudly for the guys we’d like to get someday.

  47. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 15th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

    Chris, well said.

  48. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 15th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

It just isn’t right to boo the Met players tonight. We’re all New York.

The Red Sox I can understand. In fact I’ll be disappointed if it doesn’t happen!

  49. Laura - God Bless the New York Yankees! July 15th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Who are these crubs playing for the NL?

  50. Chris Barrows(PinstripedScranton) July 15th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

    Rebecca: Thank you

These Hall of Famers are really making a point to talk about the fact that the winner gets home field advantage.

  51. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 15th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

    Proud of those Bronx fans!!!!

    Ha ha ha!!!

  52. Laura - God Bless the New York Yankees! July 15th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

I can’t hear if they are booing loudly or not.

  53. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 15th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

    Sounded like it to me!

  54. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '08, (Santana's not here, he's not coming!!!!) July 15th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Another nice touch for them to save Mo’s introduction for last, MLB is doing a pretty good job with this so far, I must say.

  55. jon July 15th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

None of the BoSox players tipped their caps, if you noticed.

  56. Laura - God Bless the New York Yankees! July 15th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

This game ain’t starting ’til 10pm. LOL!

  57. Dee July 15th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Some of these players look nervous as hell! (and they should be, it’s the Cathedral of baseball:-)

  58. EY July 15th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Sounded like big boos for Papelbum to me :)

  59. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 15th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Seeing these Hall of Famers is blowing me away. I can’t say too much because my girlfriend told me not to sell the tickets because I would regret it.

  60. Chris Barrows(PinstripedScranton) July 15th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

This has been a very well put together production so far. It’s kind of frustrating, seeing as I was about 5 minutes away from having tickets to this game tonight. All the same, I have to admit it’s an emotional ride so far.

  61. Laura - God Bless the New York Yankees! July 15th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

I think Papelsmear got booed the loudest.

  62. Gary July 15th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

The sound engineers did a lousy job with the applause, boos or cheers. All drowned out.

  63. Jeff NJ July 15th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

I always hate when the Yankee players are introduced at all star games because inevitably they get booed. It was really nice to have the shoe on the other foot this year.

By the way, I don’t recall the home non starters getting introduced last like Mo just was, is that new?

  64. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 15th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Chris I just have to convince myself that maybe seeing it this way gets me a better view. Our seats weren’t great.

We bought tickets for the last game today so I won’t miss that no matter what.

Emotional ride yes. You know it is going to be this way all night.

The largest number of hall of famers ever assembled.

  65. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 15th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Jeff I think I remember all the nonstarters being introduced. I remember one year when they run out like they were shot out of a cannon or something.

  66. Chris Barrows(PinstripedScranton) July 15th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Mark: That might work for you, but unfortunately, my friend who missed the phone call from his Uncle on the tickets, would have had them directly from Fox Sports.

    AKA: Box seats

  67. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 15th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

    Ford looks real good.

Anyone know exactly what’s wrong with Bob Shepherd?

  68. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 15th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Chris that would have made me real sick. No way I could pretend myself past that one dude.

  69. Jeff NJ July 15th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

mark, I know they introduce all the non starters, my question is does the home team players always go out of order, ie last? I never noticed that before.

  70. S.A.- I believe in this team but can the offense stop being so offensive? July 15th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

This is gonna take an hour…

  71. Chris Barrows(PinstripedScranton) July 15th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Scooter is up in heaven with Murcer calling this game tonight. Maybe Mantle is their guest in the booth too.

  72. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 15th, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Has anyone ever seen it done better? I haven’t seen a hundred All Star Games but I’ve seen a few. I didn’t always pay great attention but really. Has anyone ever seen it done any better anywhere ever? I have goosebumps.

  73. Kevin July 15th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

    George with the first pitch

  74. S.A.- I believe in this team but can the offense stop being so offensive? July 15th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Look at George…I’m actually crying :(

  75. Kevin July 15th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Wrong on my part, but nice touch anyway

  76. Rishi July 15th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

can’t type due to rehab, but that was amazing :)

  77. Beemill July 15th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

As a Sox fan, even I thought it was tough to see George this way.

The Yankees may be our rivals… but you know how to put on a classy ceremony. Great job.
