That Derek Jeter, he can read cue cards

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 16, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

While you were, you know, watching the All-Star Game last night, Derek Jeter did The Top Ten List for David Letterman.

Here’s The clip via YouTube.

(For some unknown corporate reason, I’m not allowed to embed YouTube clips on the blog. Since I get paid on Friday, seems best not to mess with that.)

Seems we see better top ten lists on here than that one was.

  2. TKinDC (subtract one from Jete's GiDP) July 16th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

#2 on the list was CLASSIC – take that BoSox fans!!! :)

  3. fuhgoobagaz July 16th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Maybe Jeter “gets to read lame top 10 list for has been” should have been number 1. .

  4. Peter Rabbit July 16th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Isn’t Viacom collecting the IP addresses of people who view content in violation of copyrights?

  5. Peter Rabbit July 16th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Nevermind— it’s the official CBS youtube channel.

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 16th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Viacom needs to calm down, seriously.

  7. Skippy July 16th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Peter Rabbit, it comes from CBS’s YouTube channel, so you’re allowed to watch it. Don’t start to feel too free, like you can go around tearing off mattress tags or anything, though.

  8. Peter Rabbit July 16th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Aye, Google had to fight to keep our IP addresses anonymous!

  9. Christine July 16th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

I wonder who Derek lost the bet with. He didn’t look like he enjoyed reading the Top 10 List at all.

He looked like he had more fun in Tampa with Biff than this.

  10. DFox July 16th, 2008 at 4:09 pm

I thought it was pretty funny.

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 16th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Peter: Viacom doesn’t realize that without Youtube, ratings for Stewart and Colbert will go way down.

  12. Blargh July 16th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Viacom got the part of the database saying what was watched, though supposedly YouTube got to remove usernames and IP addies.

  13. JonMichel July 16th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Here, that Red Sux fans you need 19 more championships you are no where near we are.

  14. Peter Rabbit July 16th, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Rebecca: Oh, they did indeed realize. That’s why we’ve got full episodes available at thedailyshow.com and Colbert’s website.

JonMichel— LOL @ repeating one of the Top Ten’s like a robot!

  15. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 16th, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Right now on ESPN, they’re saying Clemens has overshadowed the ASG.

    Uh….No.

I don’t even remember one person mentioning Clemens last night.

  16. RayBlay July 16th, 2008 at 4:33 pm

lol Rebecca that’s because they thought we were all watching ESPN saying on Sportscenter that whole report about Radomski right about the 12th, 13th innings. They thought we decided to watch that isntead of that classic ASG… and then not hear the report meantioned once on FOX

  17. Peter Rabbit July 16th, 2008 at 4:34 pm

I don’t even pay attention to the whole Clemens thing, it’s not baseball news so I filter it out. It’s not like he’s 25 years old and we need his arm!

  18. Laura July 16th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

    Who is Roger Clemens? :P

  19. Brent (Yankees Need a Pick-Me-Up) July 16th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

    Clemens?! Rocket?! Radomski!? HGH!?

:::gets in car and zooms to nowhere in particular:::

  20. James July 16th, 2008 at 4:39 pm

anyone able to find video of the various players and people of NYC singing new york, new york just before the start of the game (end of the red carpet tv broadcast). that was rather nice

  21. Today's burning question July 16th, 2008 at 4:40 pm

How many GM’s did Brian Cashman see or talk to about buying or selling during all the festivities ?

  22. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 16th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

….And they just called Nate McClouth “Nate McLovin”.

    ….Wow.

    me too

  25. Stan July 16th, 2008 at 4:44 pm

    Rebecca -

ESPN feels the needs to create news for the next 2 days.
There’s no hockey or basketball and football training camps are still another 10 days away.
Hence the need to be creative.

  26. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 16th, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Stan: Yeah, but there’s creative and then there’s overkill.

I think this is like one of the four days in the entire calender year that there are no games in any of the four major sports.

  27. Skippy July 16th, 2008 at 4:55 pm

“Football training camps are still another ten days away.”

That is NOT too far away to be talking about them.

  28. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 16th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Skippy: Defintiley not, considering the Brett Favre coverage!

  29. radnom July 16th, 2008 at 4:59 pm

Just a clarification for those worried about the whole Viacom thing from someone who has been following it…

Yes Youtube(Google) was ordered to hand over user data to Viacom by the courts and originally it was going to include IP addresses but Google and Viacom came to an agreement to sheild the identities in the data that is handed over. (The agreement stipualates that Viacom will not bypass the encryption used to Google to do this, so there is no chance Viacom can use this to sue anyone, but it potentially could get out in the public domain.) It is not like Viacom would be successful in suing individual users anyway but the breach in privacy is not something to take lightly.

Obviously the problem here is that Youtube (Google) is keeping this data in the first place. If they do not store it, they can not be ordered to hand it over when something like this comes up. The only problem is that this sort of data is ridiculusly valuable especially to Google’s line of buissness so it is unlikely (although there has been talk) of Google stopping this practice anytime soon.

  34. DFox July 16th, 2008 at 5:29 pm

Did anyone just see Cano, Melky, Veras and Betimit playing golf? It was hilarious. Cano was just like you would imagine him to be. He’s like a little kid, it was great.

  35. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 16th, 2008 at 5:31 pm

SaucY: Actually it works out well.

I’ve got tickets to the IMAX midnight showing of the Dark Night and it takes a while for me to get to Palisades, so I don’t have to worry about missing the end of the game :-D

“Obviously the problem here is that Youtube (Google) is keeping this data in the first place.”

That sort of data is also used for site features like your viewing history that you can make public or keep private, either way it needs to be stored.

  43. Joe from Long Island July 16th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Perfect timing for the All Star off date – now I can go (ie, get dragged along) to go look at furniture with my wife, and not think about the game I’m missing.

  44. RayBlay July 16th, 2008 at 6:07 pm

“It just kind of (ticks) me off because if that gets (expletive) written and I’m riding in an (expletive) parade today with my wife so she doesn’t feel safe because some (expletive) from the Daily News says I want to close the game, and that ain’t true,” he said. “See what I’m saying?

“That was an easy headline for that (expletive) to say, ‘Yeah, Papelbon wants to close.’ Of course I do, that’s my competitive nature. But I’m stepping away and saying I don’t need to close.”

    http://bostonherald.com/sports.....ion=active

    I find this quite humorous

  45. RayBlay July 16th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

By the way, Papelbon’s wife was is due New Year’s Day. Was the kid conceived in Japan?

  46. Radnom July 16th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

    @ DFox
“That sort of data is also used for site features like your viewing history that you can make public or keep private, either way it needs to be stored.”

Well, yes, if you sign up for an account. But when you do that you agree to a EULA anyway – you sacrifice your privacy for convenience. The data talked about here is collected from everyone who accesses that site, not just logged in users.

If you don’t think storing this kind of data can be dangerous, look up how last year AOL accidentally had a leak which released phrases people searched for tied to their IP addresses. It may seem harmless but by being able to see the entirety of what someone searched for, many peoples personal information (SS numbers, addresses, phone numbers) became public knowledge.

  47. Dis Custard July 16th, 2008 at 6:18 pm

Notice how Papelbon keeps going on about his wife being pregnant? That is to help gain sympathy and turn the event from it being about his stupid comments, which were recorded (so, no, Papelbon, it was what you said). All the dancing he is doing now is to deflect it from being his own fault.

The man is a turd. In a few years I bet he isn’t even closing anymore.

  48. Skippy July 16th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

(Claps hands giddily and smiles like a little boy.)

  50. DFox July 16th, 2008 at 6:36 pm

Radnom, you have a good point, but recording IPs are the only way a website can really protect themselves. If someone does something illegal on the site, or in YouTube’s case, they were probably checking for bandwidth abuse, recording IPs can protect them and at least give them a chance to block a user or track them down.

  51. gnome July 16th, 2008 at 6:38 pm

    My favorite –

    DRUM ROLL!!!!!

NUMBER 2 – which is a perfect toilet reference for the Red Sox.

    Ha ha!

  65. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 16th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Hey, anyone have two extra tickets for 2 August they want to get rid of?

I can actually afford the tickets this time around, but every time I check stubhub, it says the tickets aren’t available!

  66. ANSKY July 16th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Yep, Youlickus is good and the Sox have a better deal by not trading him for Tex.

So lets say NY can get Tex and Boston gets to keep the guy with the personality disorder. Fitting, and its good for all involved.

Guys on the Red Sox who should never become Yanks: Varitek, Pedrioaphelia, Youlickus, Manny, Schilling, Papleblowhard.

There are a few guys over there whose hypothetical signing by NY would tear the heart out of Sox fans (ala Damon) but right now I don’t see any of those happening.

NY won’t need their closer when Mo’s done. The guy won’t be so big of a deal by then.

  67. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 16th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Ah! I just found two! Paid way too much for the seats, but I’ve never been to Old Timers Day before!

  68. ANSKY July 16th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

On second thought, Varitek can become a Yank only if his contract has a clause stating he not only has to accept being the backup for whoever the heck is catching (Posada, Moeller, Me, Pete Abe or ANYone)and that he has to cary A-Rod’s bags and hand wash his jock.

Papelblowhard oughta be offered a contract stating that he can have the big bucks he thinks he deserves, but he can never pitch the 9th inning. If he pauses for a millisecond the offer should be pulled off the table and he should be told ‘good luck with the Mets’. Dorkwad.

How is A-Rod all about his own ego and the money if that Polypbon guy isn’t??? And how can Sox fans say ‘But he HAS to have that kind of cockiness / ego in order to be a good closer’ when Mariano’s never been that way?

  69. TKinDC July 16th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

If they are going to try to move the “innings eater” – I hope they left with the legs :)

fr mlbtraderumors – Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press tosses out a trade scenario:

It will be interesting whether the Twins try to package Michael Cuddyer and Livan Hernandez in a trade for a slugging third baseman before the July 31 deadline, saving $20 million in guaranteed money to Cuddyer and $2.5 million to Hernandez. Denard Span ($390,000) would replace Cuddyer in right field, and Francisco Liriano ($400,000) would replace Hernandez in the starting rotation.

  71. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 16th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

mark: No, my brother. He gets first dibs on any tickets I get if he’s around.

  72. mel July 16th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Why would Minny get rid of Livan? Inning eaters are quite valuable.

  73. V July 16th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Boston has an all star 1b, Lf and 3b. Why get Tex?

  74. TKinDC July 16th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

Innings eaters with a 5.44 era at $2.5M/year? Not so much.

Plus I think they have some younger pitching to bring up (no, not Sandy Koufax)

  75. GreenBeret7 July 16th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Mel, it’s not just the innings that he eats, it’s the post game spreads that he gobbles down before the rest of the Twinkies get into the clubhouse.

  76. Vin July 16th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

I’ve always been a big fan of Livan. I think having a known quantity in your rotation has inherent value… just knowing that tomorrow’s starter will get you to the 7th inning while giving up 4 or 5 runs has to make the manager’s job easier. No, of course, I wouldn’t want him at the front of my rotation. But guys like him (and to a lesser degree Corey Lidle, Steve Trachsel, etc.) are useful because you know what you’re getting from them. It has to be maddening for a team to have a guy like (just for argument’s sake) Pavano because going into a season, you don’t know if he’ll perform like a #1, a #5 or even make it onto the mound.

  77. Nick in SF July 16th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

KNBR 680, the Giants’ flagship station and The Sports Leader in the Bay Area, is reporting that Barry Bonds might sign with the Yankees!!!

Well, perhaps “reporting” isn’t the right word, as the extent of their “reporting” is that Cashman didn’t completely dismiss the possibility. It’s a very slow sports day.

Still, before you stop laughing and/or clean the vomit off your keyboard, ask yourself this: which player would give the Yankees the chance to win more baseball games in 2008: Richie Sexston or Barry Bonds?

  78. GreenBeret7 July 16th, 2008 at 8:23 pm

Yeah, Vin. It must be a great comfort to the manager to know the team usually needs only 6-7 runs to win a game. It sure would make me sleep easier.

  79. GreenBeret7 July 16th, 2008 at 8:25 pm

Nick, I go with Sexton. He can play defense and at least walk without a limp. Not only that, he’s actually seen pitched balls thrown in anger over the last 10-11 months.

  80. GreenBeret7 July 16th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Along with being 13 years younger.

  81. Nick in SF July 16th, 2008 at 8:29 pm

If age was the only factor, we’d have to go with Tabata.

The defense is a good point, not so sure about the limp, but if Bonds didn’t come with one he’d probably have one soon enough. There’d be less risk of that if he just stuck to a home run trot.

  82. TKinDC July 16th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Due to lack of attention, playing the part of ‘Randy I, Livan Hernandez apologist’ this episode is ‘Vin’

    :)

  83. Cerulean Blue July 16th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Greenberet, are you really as much a numnut as you sound?

  84. Dee July 16th, 2008 at 8:31 pm

Great for Jeter, but has every last funny person left to write for the Daily Show? Save for #2, that list is seriously unfunny.

  85. GreenBeret7 July 16th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Cerulean Blue, does it bother you that much that not everyone drools over Bonds? Bonds has zero value. Age 45 and the last two players that tried hitting on a regular basis at that age flopped drastically, and they didn’t bulk up on steroids to do it (Fisk and Rose).

  86. ray (sox fan) July 16th, 2008 at 8:37 pm

    Mel,
I heard a rumor on the radio today that the Lakers might get Ron Artest and give up Lamar Odom for him.

    Any truth to that?

  87. GreenBeret7 July 16th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

Nick, even home run trots produce injuries. Remember watching Giambi get hurt trotting out his home run in Toronto, last year?

  88. Nick in SF July 16th, 2008 at 8:57 pm

Giambi does seem to scoot around the bases with short strides when he makes his trot.

I don’t know about Bonds having zero value. Somewhere between zero value and adequate value… but where?

  89. Guiseppe Franco July 16th, 2008 at 8:58 pm

There’s no chance Bonds will be wearing pinstripes this season. In fact, he won’t be paid to wear any major league uniform.

Too much baggage and all of the owners have basically agreed that Bonds ain’t worth the circus that comes with him.

  90. Dis Custard July 16th, 2008 at 9:03 pm

The only positive about Bonds being on a team would be that he would take the attention away from everyone else. I don’t see him being a key to winning the rest of the season, he hasn’t been swinging at ML pitches in a long time either.

Wish I knew this was on. I’d love to have a tape of it.

  98. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: 13 and a SP) July 16th, 2008 at 9:22 pm

    Now this is funny

Convicted steroid distributor Kirk Radomski told ESPN.com that while he was moving a broken television off a dresser in the bedroom of his Long Island home last Sunday night, he found a shipping receipt for human growth hormone that he claims to have sent to Clemens’ Houston home in 2002 or 2003. Radomski said he found that receipt, along with “seven or eight others” for shipments to other baseball players, under the TV.
“My TV broke and I said, ‘Damn, I got to get it off the dresser,’” Radomski said today. “And it was right there.”

Radomski said he turned the evidence over to federal authorities on Monday.

Anyone know when espn will show it again? I missed the first 20 minutes.

  100. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 16th, 2008 at 9:25 pm

Jennifer I’ll see if I can figure it out by looking at the online guide.

  101. TKinDC July 16th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

I think the Radomski news is part of a worldwide secret plot to make sure beat writers have to work every day.

  102. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 16th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

I can’t find any more listings. I’ll be surprised if we don’t see it 100 more times but there isn’t anything coming up soon.

  103. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here} July 16th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

I bet they’ll release it on DVD – they did the Bronx is Burning. I’m getting all teary actually.. Thurm, Murcer, Rizzuto… its a little bit emotional.

  106. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 16th, 2008 at 9:32 pm

    It’s a lot emotional.

They really own our souls don’t they? I guess if I have to be owned there’s no better organization to do it than God’s hand chosen, the New York Yankees!

  107. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here} July 16th, 2008 at 9:33 pm

I don’t watch ESPN much, but i’m surprised they didn’t publicize it more even on other channels. I was scrolling through my guide looking for something to watch and saw it by chance – otherwise I would have have missed it.

  108. jennifer- I got your back Girardi-Moose was robbed July 16th, 2008 at 9:33 pm

Yeah I tried looking through the listings too, didn’t see it. I set my dvr to record the program at any time. Hopefully they’ll show it again, since they show every other crap show a million times.

  109. jennifer- I got your back Girardi-Moose was robbed July 16th, 2008 at 9:34 pm

Just looked at the dvr 7/23 9pm. Don’t know if it is a repeat or a new one.

  110. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 16th, 2008 at 9:34 pm

It had to be from above that an Angel saw it and the rest of us showed up in time here to read her post!

  111. Dis Custard July 16th, 2008 at 9:35 pm

Seems odd that Radomski suddenly finds this stuff under a TV. McNamee and Radomski are very strange people to “hide/hang on” to this stuff.

  112. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: 13 and a SP) July 16th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

In a beer can and under a t.v. next he will find Piazza’s or Delgado reciept under a lamp light

  113. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 16th, 2008 at 9:39 pm

I actually just scrolled through 7 days to get a TBA!

  114. Nick in SF July 16th, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Rodomski might be confused, he’s also admitted to shipping a number of Beanie Babies to Clemens. The proof is in the ebay feedback.

I hope Michael Kay is watching this! The curse of the “no hitter”.

Damn, there’s some pretty good bonus features on the DVD. It’d be worth it for those alone, lol.

  130. jennifer- I got your back Girardi-Moose was robbed July 16th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

I loved it! I want to go back! The city was fun, met lots of great people. IT was soooo clean too!! I was talking to some guy and told him that. He’s like oh man everyone tells us that! But it is so true!

I was on the same flight back as Pete, got stuck waiting for the plane, made friends with everyone!

  131. jennifer- I got your back Girardi-Moose was robbed July 16th, 2008 at 9:58 pm

    He must be narrating it.

  132. GreenBeret7 July 16th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

For baseball junkies that love seeing clips of the old players (older than the Yankees, anyway), FSN (Fox) runs a series called “The Golden Age Of Baseball”. There isn’t any set schedule as far as I can tell. All of the FSN channels show it. Great home movies from players and fans and mostly in color. Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Williams, Mantle….great stuff. Hopefully, Fox will put this in a set and market it. For those that haven’t seen the old Ken Burns series…shame on you.

  133. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here} July 16th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Yeah, I liked Toronto a lot when I was there too. It reminds me of home a bit. I have friends who live there.

  134. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here} July 16th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

I think Jennifer’s right and he narrated it.

  135. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: 13 and a SP) July 16th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

    Oh yeh I forgot

    Baseball Tonight making their predictions.

Let’s see if anyone mentions the Y word. So far I’ve heard Tigers and White Sox.

  137. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 16th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Jennifer: It was a lot of fun. I discovered i can throw a fastball at 30 mph, and that I can hit a foul ball off of Pedro Martinez :-D

    (well, sorta)

I also bought a Rivera t-shirt (YAY!) and hat and shot glasses and other goodies.

What a stunner. Top web gems of the first half and the Red Sox are in it…

  142. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 16th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

Meaning that ESPN once again spreads its airwaves for the Sox, not that the Sox earned it.

  143. Angel {insert random statement plus multiple !!!!!'s here} July 16th, 2008 at 10:18 pm

Sounds like you had a blast, Rebecca.

  144. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 16th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Let’s see if ESPN shows Gardners winning hit off the Red Sox.

  145. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 16th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Major league kudos to ESPN for the segment they just did on Yankee Stadium.

It was tremendous. (No not the Yankee Cathedral program. Baseball Tonight did a whole segment on Yankee Stadium, with NY NY playing in the background.

AWESOME JOB even if they did feel the need to show the Marlins win the world series and Josh Beckett running looking like a grinning idiot…

  146. Drew July 17th, 2008 at 10:46 am

    Boy those were bad
