Sexson could play immediately

The AP is now listing LHP Greg Smith as Oakland’s starter for tomorrow night. So Richie Sexson could be in the lineup right away. He has never faced Smith.
Meanwhile, Brian Bruney pitched two innings for Scranton tonight. He allowed one run on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts against Lehigh Valley. Bruney threw 36 pitches, 23 of them strikes, according to Chad Jennings.
Bruney’s line in 5 rehab games: 8.1 6 4 3 5 11.
He’s close to coming back. They might want to see him go back-to-back days. Relievers usually need 10 or 11 innings before they’re good to go.

Not sure Girardi would put him in that soon, but hey - why not?
Good. As long as this keeps Barry Bonds away, I’m all for it.
Pete -
Thanks for enjoying your day off! Did you find this news under your TV?
For the 100-win season, here come the METSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!
You know, I’ve always been a big fan of Goose Gossage, but he really just needs to stop talking now. He’s right about George Steinbrenner, but he needs to leave Joba alone.
What did Goose say now?
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3494330
“Twins GM Bill Smith says he is pleased with Liriano’s progress after missing last season with Tommy John surgery. But he also noted that the team’s four young starting pitchers have performed well with the big club and made it difficult to create a spot for the Dominican left-hander.”
you don’t suppose the yankees could get that other fifth starter from the twins creating an opening for liriano. i mean he did win a playoff game last year. and he does have more victories than anyone on the yankees except mussina and pettitte.
Bonds will be a Yankee very soon. The “source” that is reporting it is NOT backing down.
I choose to believe Tim Brown who personally called Jeff Borris over some guy IDK w/ a blog. Oh and Brian Cashman saying no and John Heyman saying nope, and Ken Rosenthal getting yelled at when that name is spoken at the Yankees FO by the FO people.
Sexon is a great guy to have around if there is ever a brawl
Randy -
Keep in mind that Bill Smith is the GM that flip/flopped McCain style all winter in the Santana talks. It can’t be imagined that the leopard changed his spots.
To the MLBNewsonline site
John Heyman was told by Yankees FO they are not interested in Bonds
Ken Rosenthal was screamed at by the Yankees FO
Buster Olney said nope
Brian Cashman on ESPN radio said “No”
End this BS rumor already and call it a night.
The Charleston game was amazing!!
We met Jesus M. and met his parents! He gave us autographs we had several ones too! We saw the 6 ft. 8 Dillen (however you spell it) and he was scouting for Saturdays game and we got his autograph and he kept looking at us. It was awesome Charleston won in the 11th on a 2 run shot by the 3rd basemen (who made great play in bottom 9).
It was amazing we met Jesus and after i yelled you gonna play in pinstripes someday and he pumped his fist! And we shook his parents hands they all so nice.
The Bonds rumor is an obvious attempt to drive traffic to this loser’s site -
Even ESPN couldn’t keep a straight face reporting the rumor!
randy - no Livan in the Bronx. Now, Ever!
Make a minor blockbuster with The Pirates and get Marte & Jason Bay…..Does this Bonds have any legs ???? One wonders what the PR backlash would be if that were to be true…..Dude can still hit, however is desperation beginning to creep into the FO…..Sexton may turn into a Dave Kingman pickup….Make no mistake, something has to be down to shake up club….But man, Bonds would be a major shake up…..He’s close with A-Rod….Iwas at the San Fran games last June, and many of the players bs’d with him during warm-ups, Jeter included…..
keith -
for having the reputation of a total idiot, he sure has one hell of a young loaded pitching staff.
can you imagine if the yankees had no spot for liriano?
Keith -
“Bill Smith is the GM that flip/flopped McCain style”
Don’t make this blog political. (btw, FISA, Iraq, Campaign Financing, Iran).
[idiot]
btw jesus montero went 1-4(groundrule double, 2 k’s,walk, and was robbed of a double, which turned into a dp. Speed is not really montero’s thing, and he did well behind the plate
Bill Smith I’ll give you Alan Horne and Ian Kennnedy and I’ll throw in Melky Cabrera just for your # 5 SP Francisco Liriano
“randy - no Livan in the Bronx. Now, Ever!”
how about liriano then?
i mean he’s no livan, but i’d take him.
livan has gotten so famous that all you have to do is google his first name and he comes up first. he’s like elvis.
Ok twisted my arm
Kennedy
Horne
Melky
Gonzalez
for your #5 SP Liriano
Brandon -
You ducked IPK & your favorite JD for Ichiro. The blog (ok, I) demand an answer!!!!
act now and we’ll throw in Betemit !
You ducked IPK & your favorite JD for Ichiro. The blog (ok, I) demand an answer!!!!
The Juvenile Delinquent stays !
he Juvenile Delinquent stays !
Sentimental - wow, who would have thought you had it in you?
Cashman I know how it is but if Kennedy, Horne, Melky, McCutchen or Aceves can land me this guy, please do it.
Brandon - which guy do you want Cashman to land?
all kidding aside, it is a rather odd move for the twins to keep livan in the rotation when liriano looks ready to join the twins.
Brandon, since the Twins are looking for a 3B, package around Betemit and throw in Eric Duncan too…LOL
“Cashman I know how it is but if Kennedy, Horne, Melky, McCutchen or Aceves can land me this guy, please do it.”
All five of them together doesn’t even begin a discussion about Liriano.
“Cashman I know how it is but if Kennedy, Horne, Melky, McCutchen or Aceves can land me this guy, please do it.”
5 dimes doesn’t get you one dollar
you absolutely look into what it takes to land a guy like Francisco Liriano. you’d be crazy not to.
if you actually thinks Brandon is serious, then I got nothing to say.
cano for liriano?
he could play third.
All five of them together doesn’t even begin a discussion about Liriano.
Tell that to F’n Mets !
We can trade for Livan and he’ll smuggle Loriano in his belly.
“cano for liriano?
he could play third.”
Throw in Hughes and AJax and we’ll start getting somewhere.
Does Bruney have any trade value?
Twins are probably just buying some arb time by keeping Liriano down. Doubt they have any real interest in moving him.
“All five of them together doesn’t even begin a discussion about Liriano.
Tell that to F’n Mets !”
Santana was going into a contract year. Liriano is cost-controlled.
Throw in Hughes and AJax and we’ll start getting somewhere.
Excuse me ?
I wonder if Glen Perkins would be available too?
Santana was going into a contract year. Liriano is cost-controlled.
And may want out, also has injury history the Twins might not want to gamble here.
“Tell that to F’n Mets !”
Apples and Oranges Brandon. Short money and 4 years control over a player compared to Santana’s contract?? C’mon.
Maybe they should put him in AA to control his cost even more.
As much as I hate to admit this, if Matsui is out for the year, Bonds is starting to make sense.
Sexson doesn’t fill that role. Sexson will platoon first base with Giambi. We still need a DH.
Damon will play left and Melky in Center. Face it guys, but for all the exitement about Gardner, he’s not an everyday player. Perfect backup/forth outfielder/pinch runner, but not good enough with the bat to start everyday. Same goes for Betemit. He’s also a bench player, not good enough to start everyday (not if you want to make the playoffs). And as great as Molina’s arm is, his bat is just too weak to be in the lineup regularly. That means Jorge, weak arm and all, is the starting catcher. So you see, we need a DH. Where else are we going to get a Good DH on the cheap.
Again, I HATE the idea, but objectively Bonds does make sense. He’d be like a Big Poppy for NY, only a meaner version. Just imagine the pitches AROD might see with Bonds hitting behind him.
“And may want out, also has injury history the Twins might not want to gamble here.”
Gamble what? Again, he’s cost-controlled.
“And may want out, also has injury history the Twins might not want to gamble here.”
May want out??? He has no choice. Further, there’s no gamble for the Twins.
is bonds even in shape?
is he working out anywhere?
randy, I know you like your players with a little more seasoning, but give this kid Bonds a shot!
hughes and cano for liriano.
who plays second then… gonzalez?
Hughes and Cano for Liriano is idiotic!
nick in sf-
the last thing bonds needs is more shots.
that’s what go him in trouble in the first place.
TD if they trade Cano…Malec would get the call.
“Hughes and Cano for Liriano is idiotic!”
you’re right.
the twins would want more.
I’m warming to the idea of bonds as dh… fitting for this year and this year only.
I am for putting Posada at DH more, and catching Molina. We lose some offense, sure, however our defense gets better and as long as our pitching straightens out I think we’ll be fine.
Bonds makes sense as a ballplayer cause he’s not rusty and will hit good behind ALex.
But it’s like saying you want Roger Clemens to pitch. It’s too much drama and the Yankees are hated enough.THe Yankees need a Ibanez,DeJesus kind of player.
They don’t need another past their prime player.
Liriano got hurt so did Hughes so why would you even think about doing this trade without Cano let alone with him? Let’s see what both can do when fully healthy again.
I would never do what you suggest it’s plain stupid imo.
Aceves and McCutchen are both coming up soon so there is no need.
Bonds is another dumb idea. I would rather risk Austin Jackson then bringing in Bonds.
THe Yankees need a Ibanez,DeJesus kind of player
yup both on my list
The type of players I would look into
1. Micheal Young
2. Jeff Keppinger
3. Casey Blake
4. Josh Willingham
5. Jason Werth
6. Ryan Freel
7. David Dejesus
8. Jeff Francoeur
9. Raul Ibanez
10.Mark DeRosa
Honestly… you would need a panel of 5 to cast the vote on bonds:
Ruth
Gehrig
Dimaggio
Mantle
Jeter
They vote…yea or neah for bonds.
I guess since it is the summer the little kids on this site do not have to go to sleep early to get ready for middle school.
pete rose at 37 was a shell of Pete Rose, look at all the #’s einstein.. Yeah Ichiro is not slowind down at 34 or 35 that is why he is hitting a soft 302…. IChiro at $85 mill is not a bad contract if compared to some of the great yankee contracts you all love such as; giambi at $120+ mill, Pavano at $40 + mill, or the cluth guy his self the whinner arod at $270 mill for a short 10 yrs of HELL. Then again Jeter at $19 mill is a bargain he slugs like Mark Belanger or Yuniesky Betancourt, etc.
Matt Holliday is 29 not 34 like Ichiro and will have 4 or 5 more productive yrs. In 4 or 5 yrs Ichiro will basically be 40 yrs old…..The amazing thins is you guys believe your trade propositions..The Sexson signing how can anyone not like it? If he sucks dump him and it cost $160,000 that is 1/72 of what Ichiro is owed………….
Bonds would also be a good signing but he is a little young for the Yanks we should wait till next yr to sign him, the young guys scare our astute fans…..
“I am for putting Posada at DH more, and catching Molina. We lose some offense, sure”
Sure, our offense has got plenty to spare.
Yanks wont sign Bonds. Too much tarnish on the final season.
Personally, I don’t care. For 200,000 $ Sign him and let the mayhem begin! Yanks make that in 1 night of beer sales.
RSm said it Gardner is not a everyday guy, he is a astute talent evaluator we should trust him..
Gardner is done, he is nothing he has had 40 or so AB’s he will never make it, blah blah blah, he is a old 24..
These are the same einsteins that 2 month ago said Pelfrey stinks and never will be any good and said that ryan ludwick is terrible and Uggla will never amount to anything and the list goes on and on..Pelfrey 7 weeks ago looked like garbage, how is he doing now??/Give up on 24 yr olds whom have done well at all levels at your own peril…..
No one under 30 on this team stuart, we should know that by now. Unless you are Joe Girardi’s kid you should not touch that field.
“Sure, our offense has got plenty to spare.”
If it does not get better, we’re not making the playoffs anyways!
the twins do not like players that give them a hard time. they traded garza because he was a headcase who wouldn’t take instruction.
if liriano really takes his grievance thing too far, i wouldn’t be shocked if they listened to offers for him. they obviously have a spot planned for him next year, and this year if livan implodes, but the twins don’t like problem players.
hughes doesn’t look to me to be at the same level as liriano. someone else good would have to be thrown in. cano was not a great minor league player. maybe he has already had his best major league years. it happens.
Livan will not implode! He has too much solid body mass. There’s no empty space to implode into.
Before Stuart became a bit too cynical, he had brought to light some credible issues……..
randy-
The Twins took on a huge headache in Delmon Young.
speaking of austin jackson, how long before hes in the majors do you guys think?
Stuart,
First off chill with the generalizations as I definitely do not fit into the category you are lumping me. Now for the record. Gardner never had power or high average at AAA, what makes you so sure he’s the next Babe Ruth?
randy lets trade hughes cano and melky for liriano.. since liriiano is not a injury risk maybe we can throw in tabata also.. tabata is 19 and had a bad 1/2 yr. in AA so I assume he will never amount to anything anyways.. Maybe we can give Liriano like a 7yr $13 mill. a yr . contract also!!!!!
Just an idea..
Wise guys on the age thing signing mid 30 yr old guys (like 34 or older ) to long term deals is a bad idea… WHen you find a few of those deals that worked out fill us in…..Moose got 7 yrs when he was 30 or 31 and that was a huge gamble that worked out fairly well they almost never work out.. How is that pedro contract working out? Yeah he sure is durable compared to Pavano….
Hughes is washed up he is like 21 and a few months I think, he has no chance of being any good…….
This team absolutely needs to get younger, which is why Ichiro is a bad idea. Ichiro’s whole game is his speed, which will be slowing in the next few seasons.
However, Bonds would be a cheap and very temporary stop gap for the remainder of this season. No one is suggesting signing him to a multi-year contract.
I say give Aceves a shot he pitched 4 innings tonight 2 hits 0ER 5k 0BB
nick in sf-
it’s not empty space. think of it like an astronomical black hole that eats all those innings and anything else that comes into it’s gravitational field.
RSM not everyone will be a power hitter. I would bet big $$$ Gardner at best will be like Brett Butler and that is not a bad thing.. The yanks have not had a speed guy who can cause havoc on the base paths in forever.. I am not saying Gardner will succeed or fail, I am just saying it needs time. If he can have a high OBP he will succeed, he obviously can steal bases he is 5 for 5 in his short time in the big leagues.. All I am saying on all these guys is you need to give them time, no you cannot keep all the prospects but the high end guys like ajax, tabata, melancon, are valuable and many will be successful pros…
And I do not want a team of all 22 yr olds but a team of almost all 34 yr olds will not work either.
abreu, jeter, giambi, and the rest of the aging crowd is getting less performance then they did when they were 29 not more.. this team cannot hit for some reason???Do you think Abreu will be better then he is now next year? The odds say no way…That is my point.. Mo is 37 and he still is great, and then again Mo is a freak of nature and the best reliever of all time…….
” Maybe we can give Liriano like a 7yr $13 mill. a yr . contract also!!!!!”
doesn’t liriano have less service time than hughes?
Bonds is acancer and really really bad guy, and has not played in 4 months at 40+ yrs old with bad bad knees.. they have 67 or so games to play Bonds is a really reallly bad idea…
Let the bonds crap rest, he IS NOT COMING TO NY. He has been blacklisted is that hard to see??????
Hughes will be great. He’s on my “off limits” list with Joba nad Brackman once I get the Yankee GM job (should be any day now
).
Tabata? Too soon to tell, but trading him now while his value is low would be foolish anyway.
Sexton could be a great fit as a RH platoon to Giambino’s LH to close out this season will the hope that it’s a quick fix for 08 and 08 only….The same would hold true if Bonds were to come aboard , which I doubt to be true…..LH reliever ( Marte ) & a young all around OF / LF( Jason Bay ) would not only help this season, but possibly for seasons after…..This season is still alive, smart moves propell the club into October….Wang & Hughes in August & September will make the difference down the stretch
I actually think they should look into breaking up the Cano- Melky combo. Obviously Cano’s not going anywhere. I’m praying that Gardner can just stop striking out so much. I saw him in Tampa this year and loved him.
Cashman’s not going to do anything big. My wish is he that he can Snakecharm somebody into giving up something decent for a Melky-IPK combo. Maybe add another decent chip to get a real outfielder under 32.
“The Twins took on a huge headache in Delmon Young.”
that was definitely one head case for another, but it may have worked out for both teams.
sometimes trades like that work out.
speaking of austin jackson, how long before hes in the majors do you guys think?
He went 4 for 4 tonight w/ 2 doubles, R and BB…He will be knocking on the MLB door probably a year from now.
Bonds has a .400 OBP. He would instantly improve the lineup.
Jesus Christ does Anthony Claggett allow any runs.
technically, Bonds has a .000 OBP.
1. Micheal Young
2. Jeff Keppinger
3. Casey Blake
4. Josh Willingham
5. Jason Werth
6. Ryan Freel
7. David Dejesus
8. Jeff Francoeur
9. Raul Ibanez
10.Mark DeRosa
A great list of one good player. After Young it is a bunch of scrubs. Thank GOD you aren’t the Yankees GM. You would have a bunch of low power and lower on base %’s in the lineup. Francouer wouldn’t play for Charleston at this rate. Ibanez peaked 3 years ago. Dejesus can’t even play for KC. Freel can’t hit. Wow. Terrible.
Next time make a list with actual players who can hit.
pat m.
i wish i had the faith in hughes that you have.
his movement on his fastball was starting to grow on me right about when he got hurt again.
being traded to a team like the twins wouldn’t be the worst thing for the kid. he’d get the time he needed to develop at his own pace.
even now without you meaning to place pressure on him, you and others are counting on
him to come up big in a pennant race. is that really in his best interests?
so far these kind of expectations have set him back if anything.
“Bonds has a .400 OBP. He would instantly improve the lineup.”
Actually Bonds has a career 444 OBP and .480 last year.
Doesn’t matter. Not going to happen. Lets all just put the crackpipe down. Signing Bonds is like the Yanks saying to the rest of the league ” Look at us! Aren’t we just ridiculous! We f###ed up so bad that we need to sign the biggest pariah in the history of baseball!”
Are we really that desperate?
yeah, the Yankees don’t have the guts to sign Bonds. but if they did…
1. Damon
2. Jeter
3. Abreu
4. Arod
5. Bonds
6. Giambi
7. Posada
8. Cano
9. Melky
Or maybe bat Giambi 3rd and drop Abreu? Too many lefties.
Matzo who are you and I suggest you check splits before you say anything, work from RISP, men on base stats, and pitches per AB the come back to me, oh yeh don’t forget defense too.
Randy 1,,,,Both Phil & Ian were huge last September…In fact I wouldn’t be too far off to say they carried the rotation down the wire…..Everyone was pissed when Ian failed to make the Postseason roster….And Phil garnished the only win as he brought it up a notch in October…..Maybe they started to realy in January down in Tampa….Hughes needs to stay in the Bronx, he’s a star ready to finally shine…Ian, very well maybe moved, Although he has so much Pitching talent, savy and smart….I think the whole Santana Wnter rumors played havoc……They ride them both out for another season
12 hours to baseball in the Bronx…
Nick in SF
I know. I did one of those a couple of days ago. i think mine had Holliday. Bonds looks good in a lot of lineups.
doesn’t matter. It really looks like they’ll just have to make do.
I hope Damon’s shoulder isn’t as bad as it sounds. Matsui sounds done for sure. If Damon comes back strong and can play left they’ll have a fighting chance. Actually there’s a lot more “ifs” in the equation than Damon. We’ll know a lot more in 10 days or so.
Love your city by the way.
Later
Lots of Yanks mentioned. Check out the last line.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=3483646
Bronx Jeers -
apparently we are. Just look at our latest pickups - Sexson, Ponson, and Eric Milton.
nyyfaninlaaland-
True that. Don’t forget about the “look” at Victor Zambrano.
Pathetic.
Nick - how about flipping Jorge with Giambi and Melky with Cano? Puts the switchies in between, some OBP down the bottom. Though Dusty might say we’d be clogging the bases, we all know Melky and Cano have no speed. And maybe Robbie yelling at Melky from the circle can get him going - doesn’t seem Gardner’s mystical presence has.
Hey! They’re doing their due diligence. They’ve looked at Zambrano TWICE.
Well, at least Victor Z. isn’t getting paid yet. But hey, it’s only money…
How many times are we gonna have to hear that?
Ichiro to the Yankees. Get it done Cashman!
Please, no Bondy, guy is a terrible teamate and a class-A jerk. A disgrace to the pinstripes.
And Ichiro dogs it
Guys, go see The Dark Knight. Seriously.
Rebecca,
How was Heath Ledger?
Why does anyone care how the Yankees “look” to the rest of the league because they pick up scrap heap players?
Here’s the way the Yankees could really look bad to the rest of the league: by not making the playoffs when they could have filled a hole by taking a player that costs them virtually nothing.
The sense of entitlement in the comments saying that the Yankees should never take released or scrap heap players is obnoxious. Big market teams do this all the time and sometimes it makes them look like geniuses. The Sox got Colon this season and he gave them some effective starts. Several years ago they also took a player the Twins abandoned by the name of David Ortiz. He worked out fairly well.
This is, by far, the worst comment section around.
Getting back to the topic at hand, Sexson at 1B in tonight’s game:
It’ll be interesting, because Sexson hasn’t lifted a bat in a game since July 8th. That’s when he hit one of only 3 extrabase hits between June 24th and then (playing every day).
Nevertheless, Smith is more a flyball pitcher than a groundball pitcher. Sexson will have his chances…but his bat is slower than molasses in January these days. Good luck.
Jeremy - you probably won’t see this comment since it’s so far down the posts now.
But my comment about the Yanks’s apparent “desparation” reflected in their “scrap heap” pickups was in joking response to another. I’m not opposed to such pickups - I don’t believe anyone suggested the Yanks should never make such moves - but I also recognize it’s not all peaches and cream. Sure there’s big successes like Ortiz and Carlos Pena. There’s also plenty of failures that go largely unremarked and forgotten. Ponson and Zambrano have landed in this latter catagory a number of times.
My concern is that acquisitions such as Sexson and Ponson could be allowed to play out for a while and wind up forestalling potential high risk high reward acquisitions that could make a bigger difference - my favorite is Xavier Nady. I’m not so married to our prospects that I think we shouldn’t part with any of the 20 odd starter prospects in our system. I also think sometimes you get what you pay for.
I’m not concerned with how the Yanks “look” either. But to tweak your appraoch a bit:
“Here’s the way the Yankees could really look bad to the rest of the league: by not making the playoffs when they (tried to fill) a hole by taking a player that costs them virtually nothing (and delivered exactly that).”
