Yankees finalize deal with Sexson

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jul 17, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees have agreed to a deal with free-agent first baseman Richie Sexson. But the official announcement will not come until tomorrow when they make a roster move. As a result, Brian Cashman is not yet commenting.

But via several sources we can tell you that it’s a done deal.

In other news: Johnny Damon didn’t swing a bat today. But he did swing a broomstick down in Tampa and felt fine, so that’s two consecutive “good days” for him. The plan is to swing at balls off a tee tomorrow. … Brian Bruney will start the second game of a doubleheader for Scranton tonight and is scheduled for two innings. He is getting very close to a return.

Meanwhile, in the interest of sanity, I’m taking the rest of the day off. I’m sure Chad Jennings will have all the Brian Bruney news you could possibly want later on tonight.

    Getting Bruney back is big.

Like the Sexson signing as well. Change of scenary can do him good.

Check out his home/away splits. Batting like .170 at Safeco and .260 on the road. On the other hand he is only batting .150 in his career at The Stadium

  2. kd July 17th, 2008 at 4:37 pm

How long from broomstick to the Bronx? That’s pretty weird to type

  3. Don Capone July 17th, 2008 at 4:39 pm

What, they got Damon sweeping up the clubhouse in Tampa?
I guess Hawkins days are numbered with Bruney coming back.

Crap have you guys been following the Bonds rumors today? Looks like it just got picked up from a more credible source…

I don’t know..on one hand this makes perfect baseball sense but I really can’t feel good about this.

  5. Chris July 17th, 2008 at 4:44 pm

I like the signing. His numbers vs lefties are awesome…and if he only plays vs lefties then it should be fine. League minimum…I’ll take it.

oh and Yahoo shut down the Bonds rumor

While sniffing out the report’s validity (or lack thereof), Brown (Tim Brown of Yahoo) was told by Bonds’ agent Jeff Borris that the rumor was “not true.”

i saw Richie Sexson hit a three run home run against Carl Pavano at Yankee stadium once…what is more surprising Sexson hitting a home run or Pavano pitching as a Yankee?

  9. radnom July 17th, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Yes yes, the Bonds rumor was just from some random blogspot blog, I think Cashman was on some radio station earlier today once again repeating that the Yankees had no interest in Bonds.

It was merely a ruse for the rickroll, luckily your warning Brandon is too far down…by the time anyone sees it it will be far, far too late :)

  10. Brent (Yankees Need a Pick-Me-Up) July 17th, 2008 at 4:50 pm

At least you’ll never see them sitting next to each other in the Yankee dugout. Pavano will make sure he’s nowhere near it.

Although this move may not help our offense, our rebounding and blocks should skyrocket.

  17. Laura - Not ready to give up just yet! July 17th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

In the end, Sexson’s signing won’t help unless the rest of the team starts living up to their potential. The biggest offenders are Melky, Cano and Abreu. A-Rod needs to do better with RISP and Jeter needs to stop hitting into so many DPs. It’s an uphill battle with us needing multiple guys to turn their seasons around, but I believe it can be done.

  18. rb15 July 17th, 2008 at 5:02 pm

what’s a rickroll? i must be getting old.

Like I said in the last post – worst case scenario is that now the Yankees have someone on the roster who can reach the top shelf in the clubhouse.

  19. G. Love July 17th, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Hopefully, Sexson will also keep opposing teams out of the paint. We haven’t had a presence like this since Ewing.

“In the end, Sexson’s signing won’t help unless the rest of the team starts living up to their potential.”

In my opinion, NO single roster addition that they could make would help without the rest of the team getting it together.

RIck Rolls are hilarious and I personally feel getting Sexoson is a risk.

  22. Paddy R July 17th, 2008 at 5:05 pm

i feel good about sexson. this is the type of “once productive, now on the scrap heap” kind of guy that gets re-energized in new york and gives the yankees a lift playing way above his talent level for two months (and of course, plays well below his talent level to start the following season when we bring them back). here’s to hoping.

  23. rb15 July 17th, 2008 at 5:05 pm

plus, the mental picture of dustin pedroia standing on first base with sexson next to him is worth the signing in itself.

Sexson’s worth a shot; i’m not that hopeful, but it’s worth trying him out over Betemit, who’s been so disappointing.

but as a scrap heap pickup, Bonds’ potential for adding to the Yankees’ win total is much larger than Sexson’s.

  33. tim boat July 17th, 2008 at 5:17 pm

Sexon right up there with Victor Zambrano and Eric Milton, low cost help, with nowhere to go but up??

Rumors Freddy Garcia only wants a 1 year deal. Anyone interested in him, if ready next month?

Arizona looking for a left handed hitting outfielder. Abreu to them for??? To the rival Dodgers, also looking for a bat, for??? Mets looking also.

Seems little interest in AJ Burnett, because of his contract.

Any of you ready to trade Moose to a contender, for some decent prospects, thinking that he’ll fade in August?

Detroit needs bullpen help. Any chance Farnsworth back to Detroit plus a prospect to pry away Marcus Thames, one time Yankee?

Just throwing out food/garbage for thought!!

  35. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 17th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

So Richmond Lockwood Sexson’s nickname is “The Big Sexy” if he ends up like he was in Seattle fans will get creative w/ this one.

My friend told me if he turns out to be a bust he will be known as the “The Big Di(ehhhhhhhhhhhhh)ck”

  42. Jorge Tabata July 17th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

    Is Madden high?

OF is the ONLY position where we have some major players close to the majors– obviously Jackson, Tabata (was raking before injury), and even Gardner. Jackson was the #14th ranked prospect by BA. Jackson is the only position prospect who will help us in the next couple of years. Ironically, catcher is probably the only other position where we have legit prospects in Montero/Romine. We have nothing at 1B, nothing in the infield,

I do agree with him that we need to find a solution for the OF because Jackson won’t be ready before the middle of next year and there is no way we can go into the season with Garnder-Melky in the same OF. Whether thats Milton Bradley or someone else. Then slide Jackson into CF with Damon in left.

But its funny how Madden ignores our best prospect this year, the only one ranked by BA in the top 25.

How is this deal a fail it is all upside they only paid money for Sexson gave no prospects and got a guy who kills LHP that is a good thing for a lefty heavy line-up. 2 years ago this would have been a rave deal Sexson has just soured out in Seattle, I think a change of scenery can do him good and his raw power is undeniable.

  46. sevrox July 17th, 2008 at 5:37 pm

I like this signing – nothing ventured nothing gained. Key words to remember: he’s a “first baseman by trade” – it’s about %$#@! time we got a real first baseman. His defense is not bad either – which is better than anything the Yanks’ve had all season. Prior to Damon coming back, a lineup of Jeter/Abreu/Arod/Giambi/Sexson/Posada/Cano/Cabrera/Gardner will work just fine.

    Maybe and Perhaps.

There are infield position prospects in AA and below. They may not be well known, but they’re there.

  48. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 17th, 2008 at 5:38 pm

The Yanks have to pay Sexson the pro-rated portion of the minimum salary, or roughly $160,000, for the rest of the year.

When any deal is done it’s dumb to whine about it. When a deal is done for $160,000, no offense but really just shut up about it. Nobody knows how it will work out but the Yankees are smarter than all of us.

    Welcome Richie.

  49. Yankee Trader July 17th, 2008 at 5:38 pm

Abreu and a prospect to Arizona for Conor Jackson, good OBA, low strikeouts, normally 1st baseman, playing left field in place of injured Eric Byrnes, out for the year. They have lefty chad Tracy playing 1st. We need a player named Jackson, to create some excitement. Maybe have a candy bar named after him.

My feeling is we should shop most of the FA’s to be, and see if a contender will bite and try and get back position players.

With only a small sampling size, CC is 2-0 with 2.40 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 15 innings, 14 strikeouts, lefties hitting .067, righties .324! Im hearing he’ll want to stay on the west coast, maybe to a NL team where he can hit!!

Yankee trader- I know what CC says but where would he go the Angels rotation is set for years. The Giants have no offense and a young rotation. The Padres arent great Arizona doesnt need an Ace. Billy Beane would NEVER give CC a 100 mil contract ever even if he wants to be home. I suspect hes a Yankee.

“Abreu and a prospect to Arizona for Conor Jackson, good OBA, low strikeouts, normally 1st baseman, playing left field in place of injured Eric Byrnes, out for the year. They have lefty chad Tracy playing 1st.”

I really don’t think we’re getting Conor Jackson for anything. He’s young and cheap and good. If he was rapidly approaching free agency, maybe.

They could probably get Chad Tracy if they ate money, and he’s played some RF in the bigs. He’s a 3B, so he’s got a good arm…

  55. Andrea July 17th, 2008 at 5:47 pm

I’m psyched Bruney’s coming back. Seriously. I’ve always liked him (well, since he’s been here) and this year he was finally showing promise.

    Yay Bruney!

  56. Al from BK July 17th, 2008 at 5:47 pm

Yankee trader- I do however agree on Conor Jackson he is pretty good, but who would that prospect be?

“They could probably get Chad Tracy if they ate money, and he’s played some RF in the bigs. He’s a 3B, so he’s got a good arm…”

Then again, if they’re playing Jackson out of position in the OF and putting Tracy at 1B…he can’t be a very good OFer or they’d just put TRACY himself out in the OF.

  58. TKinDC July 17th, 2008 at 5:48 pm

“Abreu and a prospect to Arizona for Conor Jackson,”

Oh sure, they’d be delighted to take on El Comeldulce for one of their few effective offensive players that they have under control for 3 more years.

  59. Yankee Trader July 17th, 2008 at 5:51 pm

    Whozat-
If Abreu picks it up, he might be in the top 20% of all RF’ers based on the 2007-2008 seasons. He would be competing against the likes of Markakis, JD Drew,Dye,Guillen,Ordonez,Guerrero,Cuddyer,Rios Francoeur, Griffey, Hawpe, Hart, Ethier, Nady, Giles.

He’d have to be offerred arbitration and decline or sign with another team before 12/02/08 for the Yankees to get a 1st round and sandwich pick. Lets say, he does that and signs with a team that finished high in the standings. Would those picks be worth it, over seeing what he’ll bring now??

  60. Al from BK July 17th, 2008 at 5:52 pm

A good hitting right-handed 1B is very attractive I think Arizona would give us Jackson for a price.

  63. Tank July 17th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Sexon’s strikeout totals aren’t that bad actually… I thought he was a 190-220 guy, he is more a 130-150 guy.

But he only struck out 100 times last year and on pace to K 155 times this year, which isin’t too bad.

  64. Yankee Trader July 17th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

You forgot the Dodgers as a possibility for CC, and they should be having Furcal, Lowe, others coming off their books.

I’m not sure the Yankees will be willing to do the years that CC’s agent and him will want.

“A good hitting right-handed 1B is very attractive I think Arizona would give us Jackson for a price.”

If he’s so attractive, why would the DBacks part with him? Yeah, they’d give him to us for a price that included Joba. But why would they do it for anything else? What’s their incentive?

“Would those picks be worth it, over seeing what he’ll bring now??”

I don’t know. That’s my point. You have to figure out that equation. See what the market for him is and decide. I don’t think he’s bringing back Conor Jackson unless you package him with something really appealing AND pay him to play for them. Partly because he’s not hitting or playing defense any better than Jackson in the OF right now.

  71. whozat July 17th, 2008 at 6:03 pm

“What does Joe Torre have to do with anything?”

You see, a lot of fans think that front offices make a lot of decisions based on emotions. Or, at least that they SHOULD. Cashman should personally hate Theo Epstein. This would, somehow, lead him to make better business decisions.

Now, apparently, Hank or Hal or someone has a vendetta against Torre and would commit 7 years to Sabathia JUST to screw JoeT out of his precious left arm.

  72. Al from BK July 17th, 2008 at 6:04 pm

Joe Torre is the manager of the Dodgers. Letting CC sign with L.A. would be upsetting to Yanks especially when their Ace is coming off a devastating foot injury.

  75. Nick in SF July 17th, 2008 at 6:10 pm

Al, no offense to you or to Burger King, but I don’t agree with your theory. I don’t think the decision to commit or not to commit to 6-7 years of CC for a huge price will be influenced by any feelings about Joe Torre.

    Let me ask this question?

If you’re the GM you bring in Sexson, you trade for Jarrod Washburn a lefty who becomes a FA, and will require almost nothing in return, you wait for Bruney, Damon, Wang and Hughes to return. You pray for Matsui’s return.

You then let the July deadline pass, and if the Yankees look out of it still by mid August, you put the likes of Mussina, Abreu, Pettitte, Giambi, Pavano, and Farnsworth on waivers and see if anybody claims him[ can dump the player or make a deal] or if they pass through, then see if you can work out a deal.

Is this the road the Yankees should take? Expect the team to come back from their injuries and play like the 209M they are paid for?

  84. Jim in CT July 17th, 2008 at 6:26 pm

“How many ways can you say “the yankees got Sexson for free” before it gets through some of your heads?
If it doesn’t work it’s not a big deal. There is virtually no risk involved!”
….umm, that’s no risk unless you count the opportunity cost of taking up space in the lineup, coming to the plate 1/9 of the time, critical ABs, etc. There’s a lot of left field to fly out to. It’s probably a good matchup against Lester at Fenway. Apart from those 3 ABs…..?

“High potential/low cost” is usually reserved for former stars who are coming back from injuries, not from evaporation of their ability to hit (see Ensberg, Morgan). This is not like trading for Abreu.

    Gone by 8/31.

Richie Sexon RISP is .165–no need to say any more–sigh

  86. mark - Play Moeller! Yankees can win it all with the players they have. July 17th, 2008 at 6:32 pm

Well then it looks like he’ll fit right in!

    Ha ha.

I think that if the Yanks can get CC for 5-6 years it should be done what are the plans for next year if CC signs elsewhere. Say Andy Pettitte and his elbow hit the bricks you essentially have a rotation of Joba(young and only first full year starting), Wang(coming off an injury),Moose(if he decides to return), followed by Hughes(on a strict innings limit due to his injury), IPK??(also on a strict innings limit). I am not saying that CC should be a signing simply to out-do JoeT but rather a move of neccessity that rotation seems very unreliable you need one starter who can be your horse and who has done it already so you cant put all your eggs in the Joba will be an ACE basket.

    Blanton to Phillies

  89. Westerner99 July 17th, 2008 at 6:41 pm

Good to see the board has lost a sense of reality…but was it ever really there?

  90. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 17th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

    Reality is only theoretical.

  91. Yankee Trader July 17th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

    Al from BK

Yes I think the Yankees will kick the tires on CC.
Pettitte, if he stays healthy and has a good second half, will possibly get a one year, albeit, lesser contract, because he wants to pitch in the new stadium, and he’s a lefty.
Mussina, I’d be surprised if he’s back on another 11M deal, and will be surprised if he pitches this well come August/September.
Wang will be back as will Hughes.
Kennedy will not be in the starting rotation, IMHO
Joba hopefully will be our #1 followed by Wang, Pettitte, Hughes. The #5 starter will come from minors , or a trade.

My guess is CC will want no less than Santana got, and the Yankees will pass, realizing that there are cheaper options and they need position players, especially outfielders.

    “Reality is only theoretical.”

Great line. I am excited to see Sexson in uniform tomorrow night, its not Holliday but still helpful.

Blanton to Phillies? Only a discussed deal, not done.

  94. Al from BK July 17th, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Yankee trader- What outfielders do you speak of?

  95. mel July 17th, 2008 at 6:49 pm

    Rebecca,

    Really? He was tomorrow’s starter.

Man, Bean’s got you know what’s.

  96. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 17th, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Yankee Trader: It was just announced on ESPN.

    It’s done.

  97. Nick in SF July 17th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Blanton deal done or just Blanton rumor? He’s supposed to pitch vs. the Yanks tomorrow night.

  98. Al from BK July 17th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

I have little confidence in IPK or Hughes at the moment. I think at best only one of them will stick with the club and it is a bit presumptious to say both Moose and Andy want to come back.

  99. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 17th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

    Nick: done.

  100. Patrick â„¢ July 17th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Blanton deal done for 3 minor leaguers. Not sure who yet.

  101. S.A.- I believe in this team but can the offense stop being so offensive? July 17th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Phillies got Blanton for 3 minor leaguers.

  102. Al from BK July 17th, 2008 at 6:54 pm

Blanton is an ok major league pitcher in the Nl he can be a bit better than ok.

  103. Al from BK July 17th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Beane is like a mad scientist I guess thats good new for us we can officially count the A’s out of the wild card race.

  104. Yankee Trader July 17th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Maybe the deal for Richie Sexson will turn out like Fred McGriff did for the Braves, and the team will catch on fire!! Not the stadium, for those of you who remember!! lol.

  105. Jorge Steinbrenner July 17th, 2008 at 6:58 pm

Sexson’s the type of signing that says “we’re making the bench and defense at first stronger but, if we’re going to make a run, we’re making a run with who we’ve got.”

exactly what this team should be saying in 2008.

  106. Al from BK July 17th, 2008 at 6:59 pm

If big sexy comes in and starts raking into monument park on a nightly basis then he’ll be loved if not well we all know how the stadium crowd is.

  107. Al from BK July 17th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

Although he is a having a horrific year Sexson is still apresence in a line-up. Especially a lefty heavy one.

  108. Nick in SF July 17th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

This is bad news, our offense needed to face Blanton on Friday night. Now the A’s will probably start some unknown who will dazzle our lineup with unknown sneakiness.

  109. randy l July 17th, 2008 at 7:02 pm

“Phillies got Blanton for 3 minor leaguers.”

    what! give up minor leaguers?

aren’t they worth more than anything in the baseball universe?

  110. Al from BK July 17th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

    “what! give up minor leaguers?

No Randy just in the Yankees universe.

  111. Guy Incognito July 17th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

Blanton was going vs. Moose tomorrow night, I am headed to the Bronx and was looking forward to the matchup. Wonder if Greg Smith, Saturday’s starter is up for it.

  112. Yankee Trader July 17th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

    AL from BK

What outfielders? Manny “pissed” off the Sox owner with some recent comment on how management is not giving him any respect. He has a club option for next year, which possibly won’t be picked up, or Manny will sulk. He begs to come back to his hometown in NY. He signs with the METS!! lol

I have no clue what OF’ers will be on the Yankees next year, but Damon can’t throw, Melky can’t hit, Matsui can’t run, and Abreu will be a FA. We’ve hit the tires on Nady, Bay, Holliday,Spilborghs.

  113. yankee2123 July 17th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Hey, we have Richie Sexson, Victor Zambrano, and Sidney Ponson! The Yankees paid a fraction of this price for the same team in the 80′s!

  114. Bronx Jeers July 17th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Sign Bonds and revel in the bedlam !!

  115. S.A.- I believe in this team but can the offense stop being so offensive? July 17th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

Phillies gave up Cardenas, Outman and Spencer. I think Cardenas is like their best prospect or one of their best…and they gave him up for Blanton

  116. randy l July 17th, 2008 at 7:16 pm

    nick in sf-

blanton had 230 innings last year.

guess what that qualifies him for?

  117. Al from BK July 17th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Yankee trader- I love Jason Bay what do you think gets it done?

  118. Al from BK July 17th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Wow 230 innings thats impressive I still think Blanton is mediocre. I cant believe the Haren, Harden, Blanton trio is gone already Beane is true to form.

  119. KarenJ July 17th, 2008 at 8:50 pm

Trust me — as a Mariners fan — the Yankees are NOT upgrading their bench or their defense at 1B. He’s more of a statue at 1B than Giambi is; ARod, Jeter and Cano are going to HATE this move.

And as far as being that coveted RH bat that’s going to “rake”? Hahahaha. All any decent pitcher — LH or RH, it doesn’t matter — has to do is pitch him on the black.

The VERTICAL part of the strike zone for Richie Sexson is taken care of by the umpires — they NEVER get it right, they’ve been calling a lot of strikes on pitches at his knees (which are at least 4-5 inches higher in the strike zone than most hitters), and even HE doesn’t know where the top part of his own strike zone is, let along the umpire.

I’ll probably be watching a lot more Yankees games via GameDay from now on. I’d like to see how many Yankee fan complaints about umpires’ calls get logged when Richie Sexson is at bat.

  120. 86w183 July 17th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

If Cardenas is their best prospect that’s the worst minor league system in the history of baseball. He’s a .309 hitter in single-A with good speed. The other guys are marginal prospects. Cardenas is the best prospect of the bunch, but decent hitting second basemen are not the toughest things on earth to find.

  121. OldYanksFan July 17th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

    Sexson against LHP:
    2005 – 2007: .258 .374 .507 0.881
    2008(61 AB): .344 .423 .623 1.046

    Compare those numners to Molina.

  122. KarenJ July 17th, 2008 at 11:01 pm

What, is Richie going to catch when he plays against LHP?

  123. Bob Merc-The Shift July 17th, 2008 at 11:16 pm

Here we go again…are you SERIOUS? I guess the Yankke brass is once again trying to capture lightning-in-a-bottle like they did with David Justice years back…at least we will be getting this has-been at the league minimum. It would be far better for me if the core-players of this group didn’t take every game so damn lightly…the Rays, although losing a bunch going into the break, are still a formidable opponent going into the 2nd half…seems we can’t beat them consistently! What pisses me off is this team can win…but there is ALWAYS something missing…it CERTAINLY isn’t Sexson’s bat! Pettitte put it best…We STINK right now! I wouldn’t fraz out unless I’ve been a fan for a long, long time…the 60′s to be exact!
