Here comes the Moose

Everybody will focus on the hitting, but the Yankees did some fine work on the mound tonight. The last 13 A’s went in order and the Yankees combined on 12 strikeouts.

Meanwhile, washed-up Mike Mussina improved to 12-6 with a 3.49 ERA.

Career pitching wins
34. Jim Palmer 268
35. Bob Feller, Eppa Rixey 266
37. Jim McCormick 265
38. Gus Weyhing 264
39. Mike Mussina 262

Joba Chamberlain will try and keep it going tomorrow. Oakland changed its rotation and will start Sean Gallagher. Justin Duchschererererer will go on Sunday.

Here’s hoping that Joba keeps that pitch count down.

I believe he earns the donuts back now, right? :) Just the performance we needed to kick off the second half!

Moose for Comeback Player of the Year, yes?

  4. BBB July 18th, 2008 at 10:03 pm

    Moose = HOF

I said in Spring Training that Moose would have a good year. Looks like I was right. Not that I am tooting my own horn or anything. :)

    I’m sorry I can’t lie, I thought he would be a bum..he shut me up :?

  7. whozat July 18th, 2008 at 10:04 pm

I wish they’d supported him better with runs. I wanted him to get 20 this year. He should be at about 14 wins right now. If the offense wakes up and he stays healthy, maybe he still has a shot. I’d love for that to happen. I like the Moose.

Also, Brewers interested in pen help…keep Kyle performing well, and have them on speed-dial!

  8. JR Yankees July 18th, 2008 at 10:04 pm

Great win tonight. We saw some things we haven’t seen in a while.,,hits w/ RISP w/ 2 outs, Cano with a long ball, Melky with 2 hits. Signs of life are good. Keep it up Yankees.

Can we deal Wilson Betemit for Jeff Keppinger ?

  10. TKinDC July 18th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

    Wow!

I think Feller missed time because of WWII (God bless him) but for Moose to pass Palmer (fellow O) would be wonderful!

  11. stuart July 18th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

moose has saved this team.. he is so far exceeded expectations it is unreal.. I thought he was done…

The key is he is not walking anyone….. they have 3 legit sarters the 2 old guys and the stud young guy, if Wang was healthy they have a rotation and if Hughes wakes up fuggedaboutit…

  12. sw July 18th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Does this mean the team gets donuts now that Moose has 12 wins? Would love to see him pass Feller and Palmer this year in wins. His strikeout rate has picked up nicely in the last month or so.

  13. jennifer- I got your back Girardi-Moose was robbed July 18th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Rebecca In my mind without a doubt. But there will be some who will give the nod to Hamilton. While his is a nice story, you have to give it to Moose. Hamilton’s was brought on himself. Mike’s was injuries.

  14. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 18th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

I wish they’d supported him better with runs. I wanted him to get 20 this year. He should be at about 14 wins right now.

he’d have 17 wins w/ runs support right now. One thing he has found a way to do is win and by pitching good enough.

  15. Bombshell July 18th, 2008 at 10:07 pm

Just 12 months ago there was more chance of a Moose DFA than a Moose win, he figured it out big time.

  16. Laura - Thank God for making me a Yankee fan! July 18th, 2008 at 10:07 pm

The key is that we have to get consistent. Too many times this season, the Yankees have had awesome games like tonight only to follow them up with stinkers. They have to play like this every night. They have to get serious now. No more of the “it’s still early” talk ’cause it ain’t early anymore. It’s late and they need to get going.

    Go Yankees!!

  17. whozat July 18th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

“But there will be some who will give the nod to Hamilton. While his is a nice story, you have to give it to Moose. Hamilton’s was brought on himself. Mike’s was injuries.”

So was Giambi’s back when he got the comeback award. Steroid related injuries.

Junkie to RBI king is a pretty big turnaround.

  18. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 18th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Stuart: I don’t often agree with you, but on that, I agree 100%

Jenn: I thought Hamilton got it last year for the NL?

  19. TKinDC July 18th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

    “I’m sorry I can’t lie, I thought he would be a bum..he shut me up ”

He looked so awful last year – no one could blame you (SJ skewered him something awful!)

At least the chuckleheads who want to credit Moose’s success to Hank have simmered down. Jamie Moyer? not exactly .

  20. Evil Empire July 18th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

hahahaha nice pete. justins last name was asking for it

  21. BBB July 18th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

As per his deal with Girardi, what junk food was Moose supposed to get brought back to the clubhouse when he won his 12th again? I know the ice cream is already back…was 12 wins donuts? I hope he writes it on his board again haha. Long live the MOOOOOOOSE!! Great pitching tonight (even better than his line would indicate since at least 1/3 of those hits were cheap) and nice to see him finally get some run support! Hope it’s Joba’s turn for some of that tomorrow too, cause he REALLY has gotten no love from the bats.

  22. S.A.- I believe in this team but can the offense stop being so offensive? July 18th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

I didn’t think Moose would have the type of season he has been having. Imagine how screwed would we be without him..

  23. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 18th, 2008 at 10:10 pm

The Phillies were recently working on a blockbuster with Colorado that would have netted them Brian Fuentes and Matt Holliday for something like Shane Victorino, J.A. Happ, Carlos Carrasco, and Lou Marson. Those talks have stalled, and the added payroll might’ve been a problem for the Phillies anyway.

    interesting

and for some reason Jose Guillen is not in the KC starting lineup tonight.

  24. jennifer- I got your back Girardi-Moose was robbed July 18th, 2008 at 10:11 pm

If it wasn’t for Mike this team would be fried, toast! What have you. He has saved this season so far.

  25. whozat July 18th, 2008 at 10:12 pm

“and for some reason Jose Guillen is not in the KC starting lineup tonight.”

He’s got pop and an ok average. Makes a lot of outs. I’m sure the Royals would be happy to get rid of him. He’s a jerk and signed for too much money and too long.

  26. BBB July 18th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

sadly, I think Cliff Lee will end up getting CPOY, a former 18(?) gm winner who spent most of last yr in the minors. But we can still hope he chokes hard in the 2nd half so Moose can get it!! If he can’t win 20 this yr, it would be cool if he could at least have that. I don’t think Hamilton will get it b/c he already played pretty well last year, and was considered an ascending talent iirc.

  27. DYNASTY IS DESTINY! July 18th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Moose will get to 20 wins this year!!!!

    good point.

Yeah, unless Lee tanks it’ll probably be him. I mean, consigned to the minors -> starting the all-star game?

  30. Argggggh July 18th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

I noticed that Hawkins did pretty well to close out the game. He didn’t have that normal hesitation taking the ball out of his glove before each pitch. I have to wonder if that hitch was giving some timing cues to the batters.

Mussina did pretty well after the first inning he did well. The first inning he looked like he was in for a tough night, but then get settled in. His pitches have movement and control. Amazing how poor he was last season to the change we are seeing this season.

  31. PAT M. July 18th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

I owe an apology to Mussina & all his supporters, as I was one of the more vocal anti-Moose guys here…..I gladly will continue to eat Moose mud-pies all season regardless of the outcome in the second half….I stated many times I thought by Memorial Day he’d be chum….

  32. stuart July 18th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

Where is SJ lately? I miss you Sj give us some of your observations..

Rebecca I am not as much of a negative nancy as I have posted, it is just the offense and the high dollar guys have really dissappointed this year…

Give Gardner until Damon comes back and if he does not pick it up send him down for more work. BTW why the heck did Gardner do a Melky on the slide to 1st.. It is a dumb dumb play.

good night all, Joba dominate Saturday and then we have something going.. Jorge will catch and Giambi will be in the lineup so the team offensively will be better saturday….

  33. crawdaddie July 18th, 2008 at 10:18 pm

A note about Bob Feller. He already won 107 games by the age of 22, when he went into the service from 1942-1945. He made 9 starts in 1945 when he got out of the service late in the season. So he basically missed four seasons when he was 23,24,25 and 26 years old.

  34. TKinDC July 18th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

“Signing Mark Teixeira as a replacement for Manny Ramirez doesn’t make sense for the Red Sox, who don’t want to take on that kind of mega-contract.”

Nice to have the 2nd deepest pockets in MLB out of the running for our favorite 1B!

  35. S.A.- I believe in this team but can the offense stop being so offensive? July 18th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

    Krazy Kyle…doing good work..

They didn’t boo Kyle Farnsworth at Joyce Kilmer Elementary School. Second-graders generally aren’t the booing kind, and anyway Farnsworth wasn’t there to pitch. He was there to talk.

This was back on May 21, when Farnsworth couldn’t so much as warm up in the Yankee Stadium bullpen without getting booed. So the trip out to Mahwah to talk to the kids about a couple of his favorite topics was a pleasant respite.

“Kids that age are little sponges,” Farnsworth said. “They take in everything they can.”

Farnsworth wasn’t there to talk about the Yankees, or about life as a big-league relief pitcher. Sure, some of that came up, but his real purpose for being there was to educate the youngsters on fitness and nutrition.

“This is something I care about,” Farnsworth said. “So I can tell them a little bit of what I know. Fitness, working out, but also nutrition. That’s the most important thing. You can work out all you want, but if you eat bad food, it’s not going to do you any good.”

Who’d have thought it? Kyle Farnsworth — man with a message. And a worthy one at that. It may not be enough to make the guy a fan favorite, but it’s at least something to think about the next time you boo him.

    Some detail from wikipedia:

On December 8, 1941 Feller, enlisted in the Navy, volunteering immediately for combat service becoming the first Major League Baseball player to do so following the Attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7. Feller served as Gun Captain aboard the USS Alabama,[1] and missed four seasons during his service in World War II, being decorated with five campaign ribbons and eight battle stars.

I don’t think its only about the money in the contract for Teixeira that is making them less likely to go for him. With Youkillis and Lowell where would Teixeira play? Deal Youk? I doubt it. Lowell isn’t going anywhere either.

  45. Someone Else July 18th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

The Orioles are one of the the worst run franchises in baseball at this moment (Astros are worse). Horrible.

They have trading chips to start a rebuilding. Deal Sherrill, Roberts, etc. Get prospects. But no, they ‘need a 9th inning guy’ and the owner has man-love for Roberts. Nothing but mediocrity in their future the way things are going.

  46. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 18th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

SA, I don’t remember the last time Kyle actually pitched poorly enough to warrant a booing. Which, uh, has me a little freaked out.

Bob Feller seems like an amazing man. He is as much an American treasure as Yogi Berra or Willie Mays.

  47. Bombshell July 18th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

“He’s a bust. The Red Sox should trade him for whatever they can get.”

Come on now, he pitched a no-hitter his 2nd ever start…he has good stuff as well, just doesn’t locate well enough yet. Then again, Hughes was pitching a no-hitter thru 6 2/3 in his second start….

  48. H July 18th, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Great way to start the second “half.”

Cano took some nice cuts. It would be great if he could turn it around.

And Ricky Samson had a nice debut.

Adam Jones will be good, Markakis is good, Roberts is good, and . . . um . . . a few arms.

Their first pick last year is a stud catcher whose name escapes me – and the new GM knows what he is doing. The owner is the problem. He is an arrogant lawyer who has no clue about baseball.

  50. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 18th, 2008 at 10:35 pm

  54. Argggggh July 18th, 2008 at 10:38 pm

While I can understand a player thinking about playing in his home town, I would also think that some thought goes to the actual team he would be playing for and how they look.

As a player moves along his career, the thoughts of post season chances start playing on the mind.

While the Yankees are going to have to fight to make it to the post season this year they have a higher percentage chance of making it than most other teams. It may not bring discounts, but it will make for a tougher choice. Being on the East coast for Teixeira and a few hours drive from “home” could be enough for him.

  55. Bombshell July 18th, 2008 at 10:38 pm

“Buchholz is not having the best start..”

    Absurd.

It’s true. I think he’ll be a Met. They won’t admit that they need to re-tool and they’ll just keep spending to try and patch holes. They’ll offer him a huge, unwise deal. The Yanks would have to beat it, and I don’t think they will. At least, I hope not.

I just saw Feinsand’s report card – I take exception to this:

    Jose Veras: B

One of the team’s nicest surprises, Veras helped make up for the loss of Chamberlain in the bullpen with a 1.98 ERA in June while Joba made his transition. Veras is holding opponents to a .209 average.

Rebecca, don’t you think that is how it goes with some teams. The Sox generally play well against the Angels although they did take two out of three from us in Fenway early in the season, but I know there have been just as many times that the Yankees play well against teams that the Sox struggle with when they play them.

  83. Bombshell July 18th, 2008 at 10:58 pm

I know Rebecca, and the White Sox do that too (remember the series last year where they were outscored 46-7 or something by Boston at home). But at least Houston and TB have kept them in check while being bad against us.

I guess Manny Ramirez has caused another ripple in the Red Sox muddy water. Henry said he was personally offended by what Manny said. Henry should consider himself lucky that Manny didn’t deliver the message in person or he probably would have knocked Henry down!

    Stick to football Clark Judge..

    http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/10901933

Suffering through night-after-night of listless efforts by the Yankees. I swear, for a guy who produces such big numbers, Alex Rodriguez is one of the game’s worst clutch performers. Guaranteed, if there are runners on third and second and it’s close he won’t get the ball out of the infield. History will record his acquisition as the beginning of the decline and fall of the Yankees.

  101. DFox July 18th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

That would be sort of weird if Moose and Mo were competing head to head for the Cy Young award. If this offense gets in order, it’s a very real possibility that Mussina can win 20 games.

  102. Brian July 18th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

    sadly Clark Judge is right

Pete, did anyone ask Moose how the county fair was?

  103. Brian July 18th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

sadly Moose or Mo won’t even be considered for the CYA (Moose’s ERA is too high and Mo would need to be lights out all year for a division winner plus how can you justify giving the award to Mo when K Rod will probably set the record for saves in a season…)

hopefully rational fans like me will understand this and I won’t be peppered with anger from the rest of you

  104. pat July 18th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

“History will record his acquisition as the beginning of the decline and fall of the Yankees.”

Buster Olney says it happened 3 years before A-Rod arrived in NY. These writers really need to get together and give us a definitive answer.

  105. whozat July 18th, 2008 at 11:32 pm

“plus how can you justify giving the award to Mo when K Rod will probably set the record for saves in a season…)”

Because saves are a function of opportunities. Mo’s rates are INSANE. K/9, K:BB, WHIP, they’re just godly. Mo has walked FOUR batters all season. In the same number of innings as KRod, KRod’s got 26 walks.

  106. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 18th, 2008 at 11:33 pm

History will record his acquisition as the beginning of the decline and fall of the Yankees.

That was Mariano who blew game 4 right ? I didn’t know Alex was pitching in that series. 2005 it lingered the Angels owned us and that collision in RF my god if Bubba Crosby would have just let Sheff catch the damn ball, 2006 Detroit’s SP and BP was head over heals better, last year Cleveland had 1 ace Carmona and Lofton, Blake, Cabrara Grady Sizemore stuck thier foot up our as- …. we’ve been through this add nausea the whole lineup died out there.

  107. whozat July 18th, 2008 at 11:33 pm

Mo’s K:BB is 12.5:1. 4:1 is pretty incredible. He’s got a ratio THREE TIMES AS HIGH.

Wow. It really is incredible to be able to watch him in real life. He’s just mindblowing.

  108. DFox July 18th, 2008 at 11:35 pm

Brian, you’re wrong about Moose. In his last 15 games he has a 3.10 era, and that’s not counting tonight. At the end of the season, if he pitches in his current form, his era should be much closer to 3 than what it is now. That’s a very respectable era if you can come up with 20 wins somehow.

  109. Bombshell July 18th, 2008 at 11:36 pm

It really started in 2001 and we felt it in 02′, in 03′ we owned the Red Sox mentally and Pedro. After that they left it on the field and Torre refused to bunt on Schilling and Dave Roberts had to bee the luckiest human being in the world he was safe twice on what could have been the last out. Ughh…and Kevin Brown

  111. Bombshell July 18th, 2008 at 11:38 pm

  112. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 18th, 2008 at 11:38 pm

whozat: I’ve been writing that about Mo for a while now.

“History will record his acquisition as the beginning of the decline and fall of the Yankees.”

Alex was a symptom of the Yankees’ fall, not the cause.

The Yankees fell when they cultivated the crop of Derek, Jorge, Mo and Andy and didn’t bother to replace them.

While the ML Yankee team was at the top of the universe from 98-01 (01 counts imo—we were three outs from #27!), the farm system wasn’t being properly replenished.

The team’s fall had been written back while Alex was still playing for Seattle.

  113. DFox July 18th, 2008 at 11:38 pm

Anderson just made it more costly :)

  116. whozat July 18th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

“That’s a very respectable era if you can come up with 20 wins somehow.”

True. But he’d have to be the wins leader. He doesn’t have the gaudy K numbers or the big innings totals you like to see from a Cy Young winner. If Lee and Duchschehsherere tank in the second half (certainly possible, given how Lee has been throughout his career and D’s absurdly low BABiP), Mo could sneak in. But probably not.

  117. DFox July 18th, 2008 at 11:41 pm

The Yankees “declined” for one reason, if you can even call it declining, because when you make the playoffs you sound spoiled calling it a “fall” or decline. They couldn’t do well in the playoffs because their rotation wasn’t solid enough and they didn’t have a power pitcher to go head to head with an ace on another team. That’s why I feel the Yankees can actually compete this year in the playoffs if they make it because they finally have that power pitcher.

  118. whozat July 18th, 2008 at 11:41 pm

“I hope he becomes our pitching coach in the future.”

If he wants to. I dunno if he does. Maybe he’d take a role as a scout/instructor in the Yankee latin american academies.

  119. sw July 18th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

If Moose had been in the All-Star game he wouldn’t have pitched until Sunday at the earliest probably. With 66 games left, he might get an extra start at the end of the year since he started tonight, which could be important in the quest for twenty wins.

  120. JoeT 28 in 09!! July 18th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

“because their rotation wasn’t solid enough”

    Yes.

“and they didn’t have a power pitcher to go head to head with an ace on another team.”

    No.

One big pitcher does not a championship team make. You need quality depth. People can talk about Beckett all they want, and he certainly helped…but the offense drubbing the Indians and decent performances from their other starters were just as important.

  122. DFox July 18th, 2008 at 11:44 pm

“But he’d have to be the wins leader. He doesn’t have the gaudy K numbers or the big innings totals you like to see from a Cy Young winner.”

I agree. He’s certainly right there for wins, and I think with his experience he has a better chance of being consitent in the second half compared to Lee and Duchscherer.

  123. whozat July 18th, 2008 at 11:45 pm

“I know the Yankees weren’t paying too much attention to the farm system, but it’s not like their pick came up and they said “pass””

    I disagree.

When your #1 starter goes out and gets absolutely hammered, to me, that’s the tone-setter for the series. Of course it’s not everything, but it puts you down one game right away. Maybe that’s why the offense fails, because they don’t have that strong starting performance from the #1 starter in game one. I think you need that, and I think Joba will give it to them.

  128. DFox July 18th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

Hard to believe really, as bad as we’ve been this year.

For all the talk about how much better Boston’s pitching is than the Yanks, as of right now they’ve given up 8 fewer runs than we have. Granted they’ve played 2 more games, but you get the point.

  184. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '08, (Santana's not here, he's not coming!!!!) July 19th, 2008 at 12:37 am

Nick in SF: Did you see the missed call by the 1st base ump in the top of the 3rd that led to Milwaukee’s first run? Rickie Weeks was out by a step…but he was called safe.

Pretty good company that Moose is about to join, he is only six wins away from Mr. Genuine Jockey. :)

  185. For $13 I'll be a Macadamia Nut July 19th, 2008 at 12:38 am

At least Tek can do a good job defensively. Right? Or is it the intangables?

  186. Bombshell July 19th, 2008 at 12:41 am

I got lucky this year, picked up Milton Bradley and Brad Lidge for Ichiro and Varitek at the start of the season.

  187. Blargh July 19th, 2008 at 12:41 am

Bah, reminds me that I still have Andy and Moose benched on my team for the sake of the Yankees.

  188. Bombshell July 19th, 2008 at 12:43 am

Just 4 back in the L column!

  189. Nick in SF July 19th, 2008 at 12:43 am

J-Dawg: yeah, that call was pretty brutal. But the way CC was dealing tonight, probably didn’t matter too much. Then again you never know how things will unfold…

And that’s a final in Los Angeles of Anaheim!

  190. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 19th, 2008 at 12:43 am

oh Milton Bradley in a Yankee uni we’d have 2 bad asses

  191. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 19th, 2008 at 12:45 am

the Brewers dispatched their top special assistant to watch the A’s play the Yankees. Haudricourt speculates that the Brewers might have an eye on Huston Street, who is under team control through 2010.

We have a scout in the house :)

  192. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 19th, 2008 at 12:46 am

    Sox officially lost.

  193. Buddy Biancalana July 19th, 2008 at 12:53 am

That makes a lot of sense for the Brewers to get Street.

  194. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 19th, 2008 at 12:56 am

That makes a lot of sense for the Brewers to get Street.

But would they settle for less after the price tag.

I’m hoping the Yanks can land Jeff Keppinger and Mark Loretta those 2 would shore up our bench. It’s going to be interesting if they follow Casey Blake too.

  195. Phil July 19th, 2008 at 12:58 am

We picked up 1 game, let’s collect em all and keep going!

  196. Bombshell July 19th, 2008 at 12:58 am

“I’m hoping the Yanks can land Jeff Keppinger and Mark Loretta those 2 would shore up our bench. It’s going to be interesting if they follow Casey Blake too.”

Would really love Mark Loretta on the bench. Not sure about Blake though.

  197. whozat July 19th, 2008 at 1:04 am

    “Mark Loretta”

With his sweet .326 OBP and lack of slugging? Well…if all it costs it Betemit :-)

  198. Bombshell July 19th, 2008 at 1:07 am

Yeah I mean he’s better than Betemit, and can actually field as opposed to Betemit’s sorry attempt to call himself a 3rd baseman.

  199. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 19th, 2008 at 1:12 am

With his sweet .326 OBP and lack of slugging? Well…if all it costs it Betemit

That’s my thinking, Sexson from the RH side makes Bet exspendable, Loretta or Keepinger or Blake would be an upgrade.

  200. Phil July 19th, 2008 at 1:13 am

cheeses, Torre looks like he’s gained 30 pounds in his Dodger road uni.

  201. whozat July 19th, 2008 at 1:16 am

Kep’s a better hitter, but he’s playing pretty much every day over there. Loretta’s not as good, but a lot more gettable, I figure.

  202. AeroFANatic July 19th, 2008 at 1:16 am

With Bruney close to returning, do we send down Giese….or try and get rid of Hawkins? A bullpen of : Mo, Farns, Veras, Edwar, Robertson, Bruney, Melancon/Giese is absolutely sick.

  203. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 19th, 2008 at 1:18 am

    Loretta vs LHP 2008 .354/.466/.583 :)

Keppinger would be a sweet get for this team. I wonder what the price tag would be for him ?

  204. mel July 19th, 2008 at 1:20 am

Kent & Nomar are still playing ball?

  205. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 19th, 2008 at 1:20 am

Aero: I imagine Hawkins is next one gone.

    We’re looking at

    Mo 9
    Farns 8
    Veras 7
Edwar 6 (or 7/8/9 in blowout)
    Geise (long)
    Robertson (6/7 or 7/8)
    Bruney

Who wudda thought on 1 April our bullpen would be this sick?

  206. whozat July 19th, 2008 at 1:20 am

“Keppinger would be a sweet get for this team. I wonder what the price tag would be for him ?”

I’m pretty sure he’s their starting shortstop at this point. And how much would he really play here? How much are you going to sit Jeter or Cano? I figure the marginal upgrade from Loretta to Kep wouldn’t be worth the increased price.

    “get rid of Hawkins?”

Yes. Giese can throw more pitches and gets more outs.

  207. Bombshell July 19th, 2008 at 1:21 am

Giese is the long man so I would say Hawkins goes.

  208. Bombshell July 19th, 2008 at 1:23 am

“Who wudda thought on 1 April our bullpen would be this sick?”

Better than Villone, Henn, Vizcaino, Myers lol.

  209. GreenBeret7 July 19th, 2008 at 1:25 am

I’m curious if anybody knew who Keppinger was before hit hit the triple off of Santana, last night. I can see getting him as a super-utility player, by, for God’s sake why would anybody want a second utility infielder on a team that needs an actual hitter off of the bench?

  210. Jeter2007 July 19th, 2008 at 1:26 am

i must admit that moose & giambi have carried the team so far

i would include arod & damon, but they’ve been injured for extended periods of time

not sure if i would offer moose an extension though… if he continues for the rest of the year, he makes a strong case… but if he goes back to a 4.5+ era… sorry

“I’m curious if anybody knew who Keppinger was before hit hit the triple off of Santana, last night.”

yeah, we’ve talked about him before. We had begun by talking about Freel, and Brandon brought Keppinger up. That was right before he came off the DL, before the Yanks played the Reds.

“I can see getting him as a super-utility player, by, for God’s sake why would anybody want a second utility infielder on a team that needs an actual hitter off of the bench?”

Given the composition of the bench, a super-utility guy is more of a need. And Keppinger’s a pretty solid hitter for a bench guy.

  214. whozat July 19th, 2008 at 1:33 am

“if he continues for the rest of the year, he makes a strong case… but if he goes back to a 4.5+ era… sorry”

A 4.5 ERA is still league average. I would very much not mind having that at the back end of my rotation next year.

  215. mel July 19th, 2008 at 1:35 am

If the Dodgers score holds up, they will be tied with AZ for first at 47-49. Yuck.

  216. Rebecca--Optimist Prime-Mo for Cy Young 08 July 19th, 2008 at 1:39 am

    1) I’ve heard of Keppinger but know nothing of him.

    2) If Moose keeps this up I’d do a one year deal and then re-evaluate after that.

    3) I can’t believe how much Arizona has fallen off since starting 20-8.

  217. Tank July 19th, 2008 at 1:39 am

Mets or Cubs will make easy work of the Dodgers in the ALDS.

  218. Bombshell July 19th, 2008 at 1:44 am

The Cubs will demolish them for sure, but the Mets? Too many guys in their lineup who could go cold (see: Yankees offense 2006-07), plus the Dodgers have outstanding playoff pitching with Billingsley, Lowe and Kuroda, plus a dominant late inning bullpen.

  219. mel July 19th, 2008 at 1:45 am

I’ve heard of the Keppinger report.

Rays and Phillies both took back division leads today.

  220. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 19th, 2008 at 1:45 am

I’ve heard of Keppinger but know nothing of him.

Has the knack for clutch hitting

    bats .291 overall w/ a 2 strikes

    RISP .333/.409/.475

    w/ the game tied .306/.364/.478

  221. mel July 19th, 2008 at 1:46 am

What happened to Kuroda today? He had a CG shutout not too long ago, no?

  222. GreenBeret7 July 19th, 2008 at 1:52 am

Keppinger’s real advantage over other utility players is that like Randy Velarde, he can play the outfield as well as the infield. Freel’s biggest asset is speed. His biggest problem is staying healthy. Doing face plants on walls don’t impress me when they end up on the DL. Freel’s a decent outfielder, but, as an infielder, he’s a decent outfielder.

  223. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half! July 19th, 2008 at 1:52 am

Keppinger is better than Betermit and A-Gon combined. that’s for sure.

“Keppinger’s real advantage over other utility players is that like Randy Velarde, he can play the outfield as well as the infield.”

Well, sorta. He’s really not played much outfield in the last couple years.

Anyway, he’s basically the reds starting SS. So I doubt he’s going anywhere for any kind of reasonable price.

  226. whozat July 19th, 2008 at 2:02 am

Um…why would they want the two of them when they could just keep Keppinger?

  227. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half! July 19th, 2008 at 2:03 am

Hairston is considerable for a utility guy, he could play the outfield and the infield. too bad, he’s on the DL though.

  228. whozat July 19th, 2008 at 2:08 am

“Hairston is considerable for a utility guy, he could play the outfield and the infield. too bad, he’s on the DL though.”

He’s also playing WAAAAAAY over his head.

Loretta’s the most gettable. Given that the role is to give Jeter a day off every now and again and MAYBE give cano a day off against a tough lefty, and maybe PH for Melky sometimes…the potential extra gain above Loretta doesn’t seem worth it.

  229. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 19th, 2008 at 2:10 am

Whozat is Keppinger seen that highly in Cincy’s management ?

speaking of an ex-Red Sox player, so far Eric Hinske played for 3 AL East teams. Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Rays, I wonder which AL East team he will end up next year? Yanks or the O’s? a Rookie of the Year that’s been bouncing around teams.

  231. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half! July 19th, 2008 at 2:17 am

Whozat is Keppinger seen that highly in Cincy’s management ?

Brandon, if it wasnt for Alex Gonzalez’s injury, Keppinger would never been a full time SS. do you think if he would mind going back as a bench player? given that he have proved he could be a full time player.

  232. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 19th, 2008 at 2:24 am

Ed, those are the type of batters I feel this lineup is missing, here’s another couple of things I like about Casey Blake

    2 outs RISP 08′ .326/.491/.488
    tie game .318/.400/.500
    down 1 R .313/.386/.497
    men on .328/.421/.516

    and defense at 1B/3B/RF

  233. GreenBeret7 July 19th, 2008 at 2:29 am

I’m not sure that Keppinger’s really a full time player. Sort of like Jose Molina. The more he play’s the bigger the chance that his holes get exposed. There’s a reason he’s been on 4 teams in 5 years. He’s hit for good averages, but, he keeps moving around. Even KC gave him away for next to nothing.

  234. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half! July 19th, 2008 at 2:31 am

if my memory serves me right, I read something that the Yanks were looking into Blake. if Sexson doesnt plan out from now til the deadline, Blake would be a fine addition to our bench OR as a 1B.

  235. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 19th, 2008 at 2:37 am

GB7 that’st what he is imo, to maximize Keppinger’s ability he is a utility/PH player.

  236. Brandon (Jeter GIDP: *15 even in All Star Games) (Johan HR count: *16) July 19th, 2008 at 2:39 am

Ed his addition shouldn’t have anything to do w/ Sexson, he can fill in spots in RF/1B/DH or 3B if Alex needs a day off of 3B.

He’s a tough out in the lineup that’s for sure, especially in situational hitting and that goes for Kepp. too.

  237. Ed - Yanks will be Yanks in the 2nd half! July 19th, 2008 at 2:44 am

call me crazy but after watching Ryan Sweeney making a leaping catch at the wall on a “limited space” foul terrority (something Bobby wouldnt do) and gunning down A-Rod, makes me wish that he was on our team.

He’s a good hitter too but he’s a LHB something we have a surplus of.

  239. GreenBeret7 July 19th, 2008 at 2:58 am

Is one or two extra “flashy catches” by Sweeney going to make up for the lost offense from a rather anemic bat, Ed?

I think he’s a good hitter, he wasn’t really given a chance when he was with the white sox.

  242. GreenBeret7 July 19th, 2008 at 3:05 am

He doesn’t hit for any power and he doesn’t steal bases well enough to be a singles hitter. He also doesn’t or at least hasn’t shown that he can hit left handed pitchers.

“Mets or Cubs will make easy work of the Dodgers in the ALDS.”

That would be a trick. I think they all play in the NL. If the dodgers can squeak in to the playoffs their rotation could put them past the Mets. The Cubs look like a pretty potent post season team right now. One the short series start two front of the rotation pitchers can carry a team.

It seems like offense can get you there but you need shut down pitching to win the world series. That has been the Yankees problem, not the absence of chemistry or homegrown talent. I think Joba is a step in that direction. Maybe Wang or Hughes will get back in time, or Moose could keep dealing.

  244. sfill July 19th, 2008 at 8:26 am

“2008 is the Year of the MOOSE”

  245. Bronxbyte July 19th, 2008 at 9:12 am

If Mussina were to make it known that he wants to pitch one more year and would prefer that he finish out his career as a Yankee, he could be offered a 1-year deal at much less money with the idea that he’s no more than a No. 5 starter.
What hangs in the balance is what the team will make for offseason moves and the health of Hughes.
